estled between country roads, pasture fields, and crop land is the Sims Family Golf Center, just outside Greenfield on Hull Road. The center opened in 1998, the fruit of the labor of Mike and Sharon Sims, the Sims children, and Daryle Unger. “We wanted it here for our community,” says Sims of the location just outside of town and on the family's farm. ENJOY PHILADELPHIA HISTORY, GARDENS, AND DELICIOUS FOOD GoodSeed Farm is hosting two terrific tours to Philadelphia this fall: the Philadelphia Garden Tour and the Philadelphia Food & History Tour. We’re inviting Ohio gardeners to join us for either of these wonderful getaways; if you love excellent food, beautiful gardens, and American history you need to act quickly to reserve seats on one of these trips. Between September 13 and 16th we’ll be touring three of the country’s most beautiful gardens. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania has an elegant five-acre conservatory surrounded by elegant gardens, water features and DuPont family history. The worldfamous Winterthur Museum and Gardens, a few miles away in Wilmington, Delaware, features a 275room mansion filled with furniture from all over the world, the Campbell Soup Tureen collection, and a thousand acres of gardens and grounds. Nearby on historic Route 1 is another treasure, the Brandywine River Museum with its collection of Wyeth family paintings and other contemporary art. The house and studio of “Treasure Island” illustrator N.C. Wyeth, right around the corner, is also on
our tour. These gardens are the centerpiece of a four-day trip to Philadelphia, along with wonderful meals at Longwood’s 1906 Dining Room and the historic Dilworthtown Inn. This trip will depart from GoodSeed Farm on Thursday, September 13th, and return Sunday, September 16th. Would you like to come along? E-mail us for details, or call Croswell tours and ask about tour #G30644. Our second tour, October 10th through 13th, will feature historic Philadelphia landmarks and our favorite foodie destinations in the City of Brotherly Love. Tour the National Constitution Center, see the multimedia show “America Rising”, visit the Liberty Bell, the Philadelphia Bourse, Carpenter’s Hall, Independence Hall, Eastern State Penitentiary, and other historic sites. Philadelphia is a beautiful city. We’ll see historic beautiful Fairmount Park, Old City, Jeweler’s Row and the Tiffany mosaic at the Curtis Center. For food lovers, we’ll have meal stops at Reading Terminal Market with over one hundred food stalls and eateries, Termini’s Bakery in South Philly, and the historic Italian Market on
YOU CAN JOIN GOODSEED FARM FOR TWO TRIPS TO PHILADELPHIA GARDENS, HISTORIC SITES AND FOOD DESTINATIONS, INCLUDING THE “FAIRY COTTAGE” IN THE ENCHANTED WOODS AT WINTERTHUR MUSEUM AND GARDENS IN WILMINGTON, DELAWARE. continued from Page 1 across the driving range – cow silhouettes serve as yardage markers, a couple of gravity beds are here and there providing a suitable target for anyone wishing to take on that challenge, water troughs are scattered about, and a tractor tire stands tall as well in the neatly mowed grass – contribute to Sims' reference of the center as “down on the farm.” Sharon Sims is the proprietor and the heart of the operation. Her love of this place is a noticeable thing as one looks on the carefully-tended landscaping and the comfortable porch area overlooking part of the driving range. Sims said Bill Henry, the groundskeeping superintendent, and his son Sam, the assistant groundskeeper, are responsible for keeping her “little paradise” looking “spectacular.” Sims Family Golf Center offers a driving range with mat hitting units and a grass hitting area, a putting green with sand bunkers on either side, and a ball machine where a bucket of balls is $5. Having access to the ball machine on the outside of the main structure means that people who want to hit some golf balls do not have to wait; they can hit some golf balls any time of day. The facility is also a learning center. Sims offers golf camps, private and group lessons, seminars, and clinics. A schoolhouse sits on the property that Sims calls “Sharon's Schoolhouse.” Sims says the teaching is very important to her and it shows. She spoke of all the kids she has taught through the years and their successes and how proud she is to have been a part of that by being able to offer her facility and her services. Sims said that she didn't

play much golf before being asked in 1986 to teach golf classes at Wilmington College where she taught health and physical education and teacher preparation. She said teaching the golf classes was not something that she was initially interested in, but if she was going to teach it she was going to be prepared. Sims came across an LPGA pamphlet for an upcoming seminar that “changed her life.” “It put me on a path to a passion,” Sims said. In 1988 Sims began pursuing a professional career in golf. In 1995 she received her Class A LPGA certification. She has set a goal to become a master teacher in the future. Sims had been teaching golf lessons to kids before deciding to build a facility that was more accessible to Greenfield youth who could not always make the trip to Wilmington for lessons. Thus began the search for a place to build which ended up being on this beautiful stretch of property. “Daryle Unger came in and did all the excavating,” while Sims and her family built the rest, she said. Sims had been holding golf camps for kids in the five-acre lot across the road from the center. That space holds a shelter area and soccer fields that the Sims donate usage of to Greenfield's youth soccer organization, GSAY. The area is also available for private use as well, free of charge. Sims spoke of a lot of good things that have come from the existence of the center and said, “We just have a blast with it.” For more information about the golf center and what is available go to www.simsfamilygolfcenter.co m, search “Sims Family Golf Center” on Facebook, or contact Sharon Sims by calling 937-402-0111.

HIGHLAND COUNTY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Induction ceremony and dinner Tuesday, June 5, 2012, 6 p.m. at Ponderosa Banquet Center, Hillsboro Jim Cook
A COACH FOR ALL SEASONS Cook coached four sports at Fairfield; savors victories and friendships By JEFF GILLILAND The Times-Gazette
Jim Cook says it was a man whose first name he can't remember that turned him from a boy who enrolled in college only to play ball into one who just finished his 49th year with the Fairfield Local School District, and who next week will be inducted into the third class of the Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame. After an All-Ohio athletic career at Jeffersonville High School in Fayette County, Cook had enrolled at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia to play baseball and basketball. He said he wasn't thinking about much else when Captain Blaess, the guy in charge of the college's ROTC program, told him that if he didn't start paying more attention to his studies, he'd play for just about one semester before he found himself back at home. "All I went to school for was to play ball and he helped me realize real quick that there was some other things you had to do if you wanted to play ball," Cook said Tuesday. "He was a pilot in the Air Force and he got killed the next year in a training crash, and I never actually got to thank him for kicking me in the butt a little. "After that first semester I realized I needed to major in health and physical education and get a coaching job, and that way I could stay in sports. If I could teach and still stay in coaching, that's what I wanted to do." Then again, maybe it was George Greer's arrival as a coach at Jeffersonville for Cook's senior year in high school that started him down a path that would eventually see him coach four sports, all for at least 10 years, plus serve as athletic director, principal, teacher and bus driver to this day at Fairfield. Up until then, Cook figured that if he was lucky, he'd end up working at one of two Washington Court House factories. "The thoughts back then were that if you got a job at NCR or Armco, you had it made, and that's what I thought I'd be doing until my senior year," Cook said. But George Greer, the father of current Highland County Probate and Juvenile Judge Kevin Greer, arrived in Jeffersonville about that time, and George had an uncle, Mel Greer, who was coaching at Davis and Elkins. "He said, 'Come on down and you can play for us,' so I did," Cook said. Cook found plenty of success of Davis and Elkins, where he scored 984 points in four years of basketball

Longtime Fairfield Local Schools coach and educator Jim Cook is pictured Tuesday on the front porch of his home in Leesburg. and also won 10 games as a pitcher. But that's also where he found out his fastball was about 10 mph too slow for the big show. By the time Cook graduated from college, George Greer was superintendent at Leesburg and in 1963 he hired Cook to teach health, physical education, driver's education and general business, as well as do some coaching. "I coached reserve basketball for $100 per year and baseball for nothing that first year and was thoroughly excited to be coaching baseball," Cook said. Yet again, maybe the foundation to Cook's career path was laid when he was a youngster in Jeffersonville, dreaming of being a pitcher for the New York Yankees. He said that in those days there was no Little League, but there was always a bunch of boys ready to play baseball in the street, a field or any place they could find. "We might have rode some bikes and did a little fishing too, but we were always ready for a game of baseball and we imitated guys like Ted Kluszewski, Willie Mays, Stan Musial and Ted Williams," Cook said. "We didn't have any coaches,
Congratulations to All of the Hall of Fame Winners!
but sometimes we'd play all day, and I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world. We played in a field a lot and we used dried up cow patties for bases. Once in a while you'd slide into one that wasn't quite dry all the way." Baseballs had usually lost their original cover and were wrapped back up with black tape. Bats were usually ones that had been broken during adult Sunday afternoon games that were mended with screws and more tape. Two older brothers hit Cook fly balls and grounders from the time he was old enough to carry a glove and when he was 11 or 12 his dad built him a basketball court, which he said was pretty unusual in those days. Cook was in seventh grade when he got his first real coach, and when he was 13 he threw the very first pitch in the Fayette County Babe Ruth League. "I plunked the first batter right in the helmet and that was the start of my pitching career," he said. In high school, Cook's Jeffersonville baseball teams went a combined 37-7 his junior and senior years, winning a district title in 1958 and finishing as district runners-up
in 1959. In basketball, he was All-Ohio Class B honorable mention and averaged 20.3 points per game his senior year, including a record 62 in one game. Four years later he landed in Leesburg. At Fairfield he coached boys’ basketball for 19 years (196465 to 1973-73 and 1980-81 to 198889), softball for 13 years (1981-93), golf for 12 years starting in the fall of 1979 and baseball for 10 years, compiling a 70-64 record. He coached the Lady Lions softball team to an appearance in the state tournament in 1982. They won eight Southern Hills League championships, 11 sectional tournament titles and district titles in 1981, 1982 and 1986. During the years his daughter, Jennifer, played they completed a 37-game SHL win streak. In his first year as golf coach he led Fairfield to an appearance in the state tournament, with his sons, Tim and Chris, members of the team. He also won four SHL golf titles. His basketball teams won 191 games, Highland County League championships in 1967 and 1968 and an SHL title in 1986. He was SHL Coach of the Year in 1986 and
1987. Cook said there are several memories that stick out, including the 1982 run to the state softball tournament, where in the regional finals Fairfield knocked off two-time defending state champ Portsmouth Clay, ending its 88-game winning streak. That prompted him to remove his hair piece and drop it on home plate. Taking his sons' team to the state golf tournament is another favorite memory, as is a 1972 sectional basketball tournament win over a Paint Valley team that had won the district the year before, had all five starters back and had thoughts of a state tournament run. Cook said his team drew PV for the first game and on the way out of the draw, the PV coach said the draw couldn't have worked out better for him. Paint Valley scored with five seconds left to take a one-point lead, but Don Taylor hit a 40-foot shot at the buzzer off a pass from Kevin Greer, whose father had given Cook his first job. "You talk about a happy bunch, and a sad bunch from Paint Valley ‌ those people were devastated," Cook said. "We had a decent team, but they had a great team and we upset them." Another favorite memory is of a loss after a huge comeback. Fairfield was trailing a highly-touted and undefeated Georgetown team 45-17 early in the third quarter, then went on a 34-3 run to take a three-point lead with five minutes left in the game. The Lions eventually ran out of gas and lost the game, but Cook said it may be his favorite memory. "I've never seen anything like it my life," Cook said. "We started pressing and they started throwing the ball away and we hit every shot. To this day, several of the guys from that team tell me it had a profound effect on their lives and how they look at things, because it proved to them that anything is possible." A few days ago, Cook finished his 49th year driving a school bus, and he says he'll be back for his 50th. He also drove buses to many Fairfield games, and wore all kinds of other hats in Leesburg, including a recent term as mayor. The great part of it all, he said, is that his family was with him the whole time, his three kids growing up in the gym and his kids and wife, Mary Jo, riding the bus with him to and from games. "I had fun. I was as excited as the kids just to be able to do it," Cook said. "I didn't get along with all of them, but a lot of my best friends today are former ball players of mine and that makes me feel good. "All in all, I had a lot of fun, and my family was with me all the time. It was a family affair."

‘THERE HAS TO BE A SPARK’ Greenfield coach credits players and the moments that count By JEFF GILLILAND The Times-Gazette
When Dennis Overstake looks back on a 31-year varsity coaching career that has seen him win 490 games and counting, it's not the wins and losses that come to mind as much as the relationships he's built with others he's worked with and the influence he hopes he's had on more than three decades of young people. "There has to be a spark, something that makes you willing to spend that extra time at whatever you do, and sometimes it's just the kids," said Overstake, the Greenfield girls basketball coach who on Tuesday will become a member of the third class to be inducted into the Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame. But for Overstake, while kids are his primary motivation, there are several other reasons why he's not ready to hang up the coaching whistle just yet. He mentioned his relationship with Rick Van Matre, who started his varsity boys career at McClain the same year Overstake started with the varsity girls, and how they were always able to easily handle scheduling conflicts and other problems that
of girls he coached a couple decades back, and his thankfulness for the support of his family, the community and a school administration "that has always been there to back you up when you needed it, and at other times stayed out of the way when you just needed to coach." Admittedly a person who's never much liked change, Overstake said he plans to be on the sidelines for a few more years, unless a new law forcing teachers to retire or face retirement payout reductions once they reach a certain level requires him to give up coaching. "It's probably kind of up to the administration and board of education because next year will be my 35th year and I have to be out by 2013," Overstake said. "The seventh-grade group that just finished up is pretty good and I'd like to stick around and coach them. I'd like to see them through the proT-G file photo gram." It's a program Overstake has led McClain girls basketball coach Dennis Overstake, a 1974 Whiteoak High School graduate, is surrounded by one every season except the first six of his recent teams that included his daughter, Kayla, far left in back row. since it originated during the 1975arose. VAN MATRE: ‘I WAS BLESSED’ Baseball was McClain coach’s first real passion; recently inducted into Ohio Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame By JEFF GILLILAND The Times-Gazette
For all the passion and energy Rick Van Matre poured into a coaching career that recently saw him inducted into the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, you'd think he was born with a basketball in his hands. But with a family steeped in baseball tradition, that was the sport he fell in love with as a youngster growing up in Middleport, a stone's throw from the Ohio River. "I was a baseball person. I played basketball and was decent at it, but my first love was baseball," Van Matre said Thursday, shortly after the last day of his teaching career at McClain High School in Greenfield. Even through the years he was playing baseball at what was then Rio Grande College, Van Matre assumed he'd be a baseball coach. But time has a way of working things out, and for Van Matre that meant landing in Greenfield, where in 28 seasons he led the Tiger basketball team to a 472-170 record. In recognition of his success as a coach, and all the other things he did to unite the Greenfield community, Van Matre will be a member of the third class to be inducted into The Times-Gazette's Highland

Legion level and in college as a pitcher. But what's ironic is that in 1969 or 1970, he found his Meigs County team matched against Hillsboro in the semifinals of the

pitched in the Major Leagues, was on the mound for Hillsboro. Van Matre said Hillsboro scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat his team, 3-2. Van Matre went on to Rio Grande, mainly, he said, because of Carl Wolfe. "He was my high school basketball coach and mentor," Van Matre said. "I looked up to him and wanted to be like him, and he's the real reason I went to college and got into the education profession." At Rio, Van Matre played baseball with Norm Pearson, and was later in Pearson's wedding. Pearson, too, went on to become a successful basketball coach at Chesapeake and Oak Hill, but in college they were both basically baseball guys. After graduating from college, Van Matre was substitute teaching in five school districts, teaching any subject he was asked to. He returned to college to redefine his degree and eventually was hired at Gallipolis, teaching fourth grade, while also serving as an assistant varsity baseball coach and reserve basketball coach. Even at that time, he was still thinking of being a high school baseball coach.

‘THE VOICE’ AND SO MUCH MORE Ernie Blankenship’s 51 years of radio announcing and activism make him a legend By JEFF GILLILAND The Times-Gazette
For 51 years his voice echoed from our radios, filling our homes and vehicles with the athletic exploits of our sons and daughters, grandchildren, neighbors, friends and community members, from locations across the state. When we weren't able to be there in person, or maybe because we preferred the sound of his distinctive voice, we listened to Ernie Blankenship. And it is because of that invaluable service he provided to us, more than his own athletic accomplishments, which were by no means meager, that Blankenship is among the third class that will be enshrined into the Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame during a banquet that begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro. It is fitting that Ernie goes in with a class that includes three coaches — Jim Cook, Dennis Overstake and Rick Van Matre — whose games he covered for decades, and who will no doubt reflect on those times during Tuesday's banquet. Van Matre said Thursday, “It's really an honor to be selected to this, but to be selected with this group — Dennis, who I worked alongside for 30 years; Ernie, who I was very, very close to over the years; and Jim, who I was very close to, too — so to be put in with this group is very, very special in that right, too.” Ernie started broadcasting games on a September night in 1959, just after returning from a stint in the military. He had absolutely no radio experience, but was asked to do it, and figured that since he loved athletics, he could find something good to say about local kids. "I've always thought that if I couldn't say something good about someone, don't say it," Blankenship said. "You're talking about 15-, 16-,

"I was the eyes and the ears of the people that couldn't be there. If I could say something nice about a kid whose grandmother is sitting there at home and put a big smile on her face, that's basically what I'm all about." At a football game at Hillsboro in the early 1990s against Western Brown, a massive fight broke out on the field as the teams were exchanging postgame handshakes. Blankenship was still on the air waiting to do postgame interviews, but those listening on the radio had no clue there was a fight. "I didn't say anything about it because I always tried to keep things
positive. What good would it have done anybody?" Blankenship once asked. John Barney, a longtime co-worker with Blankenship at the radio station, once relayed a story about Ernie broadcasting an American Legion state tournament baseball game. Pete Rose Jr.'s team was playing against Hillsboro, and according to Barney, little Pete's mother was there. "She's spouting off like a sailor and Ernie turned to me and said, 'I hope no one back home can hear this because I never want to be negative,' and he was always like that," Barney said. "He always put a positive spin on it. "He did a lot of other things like
that behind the scenes for the kids in his personal life that not many people know about." Blankenship was born in Neon, Ky. His father, Stanley Blankenship, died in 1948, when Ernie was 11, and his mother, Lulu Blankenship, moved the family from Letcher County, Ky. to Columbus. While there, Ernie and three brothers and a sister were sent to an orphanage due to financial hardships. Later, after Lulu moved to Hillsboro to work and be closer to family members, the siblings were reunited with their mother. Ernie attended Hillsboro High School from 1951 to 1955, and said Thursday that he played football,
baseball and was on the track team. He was an All-Ohio center in football and an All-South Central Ohio League selection in baseball. He had offers to play college football, but selected the military so he could help support his family. Later, he played two summers of minor league baseball with the Cincinnati Reds in San Antonio, Texas, playing pitcher and catcher, but again gave it up to help his family. "Mom got sick and I thought it would be better to be at home than having fun doing what I was doing," Ernie said this week. Not long ago, Blankenship estimated he called 60 to 70 basketball games a year. Multiply that times 52, throw in well over 500 football games and a pocketful of baseball and softball games, and you can start to imagine the number of miles Blankenship has traveled covering ball games. He said he's probably been a spectator at just as many. So, if he could go back in time, would he do it all over again? "In a heartbeat. I love to put on the red and white," he said. A scholarship in Blankenship's name through NCB has now awarded more than $100,000 to Highland County students for their college educations. And then there's the work he’s done with the telethon for the Highland County Society for Children and Adults, helping raise more than $2 million to aid the ailing in the county. "It's been fun. I've met a lot of good people," Blankenship said. "It nice to go places and hear someone say, 'Hey, Ernie, how ya' doing.' It's had a lot of plusses and gave me an opportunity to talk about the youth of our area. "If there was something I could say to everyone, it would be just thank you. Without them, there would be no me. I never had a confrontation with anyone. People were just really good to me."
Overstake: Girls basketball coach’s win record is 18th on Ohio’s all-time list Overstake grew up in the Mowrystown area, playing on a successful Knothole team that included former Major League pitcher Kip Young every other year when their ages put them on the same team. He didn't start playing organized basketball until junior high, then played basketball for Whiteoak High School in grades 9-12 and baseball in grades 10-12. He said he was a second and third baseman in baseball and off guard in basketball but, "I never won anything for my athletic ability." Sometimes though, he helped coached his wife and 1974 WHS classmate Dixie's softball team (she went on to play softball at Morehead), "and I thought that was something I might be able to do." Coming out of college, Overstake had just two interviews, one at Goshen to teach seven classes of general science, and a second one in Greenfield. Greenfield called back and offered him a position to teach science and physical education. He accepted, then found out they needed someone to start a reserve and varsity girls volleyball program, plus a junior high boys basketball coach at Buckskin. Overstake coached volleyball for four years, but basketball at Buckskin for just one because the reserve girls’ basketball job came open after that and he took
it, leading the jayvee Lady Tigers to a 29-3 record in two seasons. Then John Miller left the varsity girls position to take an administrative job and Overstake stepped into a position he's held for more than three decades. Two memories that stand out, Overstake said, involve probably his two best players, Audra Cook, who went on to score more than 1,000 points at Cleveland State and is now in that school's hall of fame, and Sarah Hull, who went on to play at Miami University. Overstake said that during Cook's years, McClain was down three points late in a regional game at
Zanesville when one of her teammates grabbed a backside rebound. Cook took the ball from her, stepped behind the three-point line and hit a shot to tie the game. "Those kind of things make a coach look good — when you have players that think out there on the court and know what needs to be done," Overstake said. The other came during Hull's junior year at the regional tournament with a team that was 25-0. Hull had torn her ACL in a regional semifinal victory, then, after doctors told her she couldn't hurt it any more by playing, she did everything she could to
strengthen the knee so she could play the next week, even going through warmups. "She was unable to play, but the rest of the team had seen everything she did to try to play and they rallied around that. It was really inspiring," Overstake said. It's those kind of memories that leave Overstake wanting to create more. "A lot of the credit for what we've accomplished goes to the girls who have played in the program," Overstake said. "One of the things we're looking at now is a lack of participation, and there's a lot of other things those girls could have been doing other than
working through the longest season there is, constantly working to stay in condition, working on plays and knowing what the other team is doing. …But I hope they also picked up some family values, some things they learned from their own families and some things they learned from being a part of a team, and hopefully they will pass that on to their children." Tickets to the Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony are $15 each and can be purchased at The Times-Gazette. The banquet is 6 p.m. June 5 at Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro.

continued from Page 8 In 31 years, he's had just five losing seasons, and two of those teams entered the tournament 10-10. His overall record is 490-199. The 490 wins rank 18th on Ohio's all-time list. His teams have won 17 sectional championships, six district titles and finished as regional runners-up once. He's won seven South Central Ohio League and two Southern Buckeye Conference titles. He's sent 18 girls on to play college basketball, and has been named Southeast District Coach of the Year three times and Ohio Division II Coach of the Year twice. Overstake figured from a young age that coaching and teaching were professions he might be good at. "When I got out of high school I kind of knew what I wanted to do," Overstake said. "That summer I went to Tri-County Community College (now Southern State) and took some P.E. courses, then moved on to Morehead State and continued to take P.E. At one time I wanted to teach history, but it was suggested that the biological sciences have a lot of classes that cross over with physical education, and I figured that's what I wanted. "I knew that with three boys on the farm there wasn't any room to try to make a living off that. Both my mom and dad had taught, and that was basically the beginning of it right there."

Van Matre: 26 winning records in 28 years of coaching basketball at McClain continued from Page 8 Van Matre started playing in a very good baseball program in Middleport at age 8, where he also developed his love of fishing, living so close to the Ohio River. "We played baseball from daylight to dark growing up," he said. "We played all the time. Kids don't do that anymore." Van Matre's dad was very involved with the local legion baseball team, and still is. He said his mom probably hasn't missed a sin-
gle Cincinnati Reds game, either on TV or the radio, for at least 40 years. He also had an uncle that reached the AAA level in the minor leagues. After four years at Gallipolis, the varsity basketball coaching job in Greenfield came open, and Van Matre decided to apply. Wolfe, Van Matre's high school coach, also applied for the job and was the Greenfield's first choice. At the same time, Van Matre had a good friend, whose dad had
Congratulations To All The Honorees!
coached Van Matre in baseball, teaching chemistry in Greenfield, and the friend told Van Matre that Greenfield had all kinds of talent coming up in basketball. Wolfe turned the job down, Van Matre took it, and the rest is history. In his first six years at McClain, Van Matre's teams went 19-3, 19-5, 15-7, 22-2, 24-2 and 25-1. With Van Matre at the helm, the Tigers won by an average of 16.9 points per game over 28 years.
They claimed eight South Central Ohio League championships (McClain was not affiliated with a league for about 10 seasons), 16 sectional tournament titles, eight district titles, and were regional runners-up three times. All three times they were within a shot of the state tournament. They lost once in three overtimes, once when they missed a last-second shot and once by two points. Still, Van Matre said that to say he was blessed would be an under-
statement. "The job opens up in little Greenfield, Ohio, where they haven't had any real success in a long time, I walk into all that talent — yes, I was pretty blessed," Van Matre said. "Then you get the program rolling and it's pretty easy from there." So, does he have any regrets about never becoming a head baseball coach? "No. I couldn't have written it down any better," he said.

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JUNE 11, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Shia LaBeouf, 26; Joshua Jackson, 34; Peter Dinklage, 43; Hugh Laurie, 53. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Move toward positive, doable projects or ventures. Wasting time on something that is too risky or excessive will lead you astray. Don't feel pressured by others. It's up to you to make choices that suit your needs, not what everyone else wants. Don't let emotions lead in work-related matters. Your numbers are 8, 12, 17, 20, 29, 31, 43. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Keep a tight lid on your thoughts, feelings and motives. You don't want to give anyone the upper hand when so much is at stake. Listen carefully and react thoughtfully, but protect what you have. Don't fold under pressure. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Share your creative ideas and look for solutions that will benefit both you and the people you are dealing with. An opportunity to learn something that will help you get ahead will develop. Physical activity will help ease stress. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Make sure you have time to handle what's expected of you before taking on more responsibility. Disillusionment is apparent, especially in emotional matters or with regard to helping or asking for assistance. Listen carefully. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You will pick up valuable information by sharing your ideas. Take an unusual approach in what you do or spend time with someone from a different background and you will expand your awareness, resulting in greater diversification. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Promote what you do well, and push for changes that will help you excel even further. Ask for favors and offer your services. Don't let money matters depress you when finding new ways to increase your income is what's required. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): One step at a time. If you move forward too quickly, you will end up having to go back and make corrections. Listen carefully to what's being asked of you before agreeing to get involved. A change someone makes will affect your finances. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Share your knowledge without embellishment or someone will question your authenticity. Accept the inevitable rather than initiating change. Focus on being better, knowing more and expanding your personal horizons through discipline. Love is in the stars. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Enjoy the company of people who share your creative interests. Spending more time with youngsters will inspire you to update your look and lifestyle. A moderate step toward the changes you want to incorporate is all that's required. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Keep life simple and refrain from getting involved in emotional situations by being open and honest about the way you feel and what your intentions are. Change will help you expand your interests and advance professionally. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Rely on experience and connections to help you make the right choice now. Don't let
someone you work with or for create an emotional dilemma that will throw you off or contribute to a mistake. Focus and balance are required. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Confusion will set in if you let the past interfere with the present. Let go of what hasn't worked or what's dragging you down, and concentrate on the people and things that motivate you to be your best.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Keep your feelings to yourself, and avoid anyone trying to goad you into an uncompromising position. Set your sights on creative venues that will motivate and inspire you to start a new project or join a group that interests you. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are an imaginative dreamer. You are creative, persistent, excessive and original.

Once a tooth is extracted, the dentist likes to see good healing that leads to bone formation. Otherwise, poor healing may lead to excessive bone loss that compromises the patient’s ability to accept a dental prosthetic or implant. Consequently, there is reason to cheer a recent study that shows the platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy accelerates post extraction healing and bone formation. PRP therapy magnifies the body’s first response to soft-tissue injury, which is to deliver platelet cells. These blood components are packed with growth and healing factors that initiate repair and stimulate stem cells. By injecting large concentrations of the patient’s own platelets into the extraction site, it is possible to jump start the body’s natural healing response.
