ell, 2020 was a year we won’t forget in a hurry! I know we’re not out of the woods, but I feel like as we wake up to a new year, blinking into the January light, there’s renewed hope and excitement for the future. I bought myself two new outfits for weddings I had in the diary last year, which have been left hanging in the wardrobe, and I’m quietly confident I’ll get to pull them out in 2021! So how are you finding wedding planning during a pandemic? I know it’s been a tough ride, but I hope the fact that An Essex Wedding has been here, celebrating the best of the county’s wedding industry, has helped. We will always bang the drum for local indie businesses, they’ve weathered the storm and supported their couples throughout, now’s the time to support them in return. INTIMATE CELEBRATIONS

With restrictions imposed on guest numbers at weddings, many couples have postponed their big day. Others have taken stock and opted for a smaller celebration. With this in mind, The Lawn in Rochford has created its new Intimate Wedding Package, available throughout 2021 for just £1,895. endall and Rob met when they were just 17 years old, after catching each other’s eye at college. Over the next 11 years, they were lucky enough to grow up together. “We’ve shared incredible experiences together,” Rob says. “Tying the knot was definitely long overdue! She is my best friend and I’m so happy to have married her.” When it came to proposing, Rob pulled out all the stops. “We were in New York just before Christmas,” Kendall tells us. “It had been our dream holiday for years! He popped the question in Central Park – it was the most wonderful surprise. Afterwards we went for an amazing meal and watched the Saks Christmas light show. The whole experience was magical.” Back home, the pair started planning their dream wedding for 22nd August, 2020, with a ceremony at St Andrew’s Church, Barnston, followed by a reception at Little Channels. At the time, they couldn’t imagine what was in store in 2020. We caught up with Kendall to find out more about how they planned their dream day amid a pandemic…

SETTING THE SCENE The pair knew they wanted to have a church ceremony, and after moving into their first home together they found a local church, St Andrew’s, which fit the bill perfectly. “The church is beautiful and we loved the quiet and peaceful location,” Kendall says. “For the reception, it had to be the rustic, country feel of Little Channels. The size of the venue was an immediate draw, as we were always planning a wedding with smaller guest numbers.” The pair were able to arrive in style in a classic 1930’s Rolls Royce. The couple opted for a white and pink palette, with subtle Beauty and the Beast-inspired elements running throughout. “Our flowers followed the theme beautifully,” Kendall says. “We had a flower arch at the door to the church and giant 6ft roses leading up to it – it was the perfect entrance to our wedding!” Inside, pedestals brimming with roses and pink petals scattered down the aisle completed the look. The reception venue was spectacular too, with a flower wall, a stunning top table centrepiece and a giant floral heart as a backdrop. On the tables, bell jars holding a single rose surrounded by petals on a log slice gave a nod to their theme and the rustic setting. The two-tier white cake was adorned with pink iced flowers and a wooden topper. “The flavours were chocolate orange and Bakewell tart; it was delicious!” Kendall remembers. “Guests were also treated to heart-shaped iced cookies as a wedding favour.”

LOOKING THE PART Kendall was instantly drawn to Enzoani dresses, especially mermaidstyle gowns. “I tried on lots of different styles as I wanted to have the full experience,” she says. “As soon as I tried on Juri, I knew it was the one. It was the look I had in mind and it made me feel like a bride.” She teamed it with a full-length veil embellished with diamantés and pearls, while a gorgeous hair comb from Botias Accessories complemented her Hollywood-waves hairstyle.

Rob and the father-of-the-bride looked suave in navy suits with dusky pink accessories, which coordinated beautifully with the bridesmaids’ V-neck Mori Lee dresses. “As we had an intimate wedding, we decided not have groomsmen,” Kendall explains. “Otherwise nearly all the men at the wedding would have been dressed the same!”

REAL WEDDINGS

TIME TO PARTY (AT HOME!) After meeting her two years before, the couple knew they had to have Zoe Alexandria playing the piano during the day. “She was fantastic and our guests loved her,” Kendall says. “Her ability to perform any request across all genres was a real hit. Having her play as I walked down the aisle was perfect.” As there were restrictions on wedding receptions at the time, the couple’s close family and friends returned to the newlyweds’ home to continue celebrations in their back garden. “We were hesitant having to move the evening party from our venue, but it worked out for the best and everyone had a fantastic time,” Kendall smiles. “We had a rustic heart-shaped photo booth in the garden and we got some fantastic pictures of our guests in silly hats and props!”

NAVIGATING THE NEW NORMAL After two years of planning, the couple were concerned that the pandemic may mean they couldn’t get married at all. “For months leading up to the day we weren’t sure if it could go ahead,” Kendall remembers. “We remained positive throughout, and every time there was a new obstacle, we worked together to get around it. We were both so happy to finally be husband and wife – nothing was going to stop us getting married!” So looking back, how do they feel about their special day? “People tell you to try to take it all in, but everything went past so quickly; it was like a dream,” the bride says. “Being one of the first weddings after the lockdown eased, we were wondering how it would go. Luckily we didn’t have to change much, but our guests did have to wear face masks for the ceremony. We invested in clear masks so we could see our loved ones’ faces – it was totally worth it!”

ade and Bradley’s relationship started as a modern fairytale when they both swiped right. “Jade’s luscious locks and infectious smile had me hooked,” Bradley remembers. Their first date was to the local pub, and their second date at Colchester Zoo came soon after. “We were both hanging around smelling the candles in the gift shop because neither of us wanted to leave,” Jade laughs. When it came to popping the question, Bradley chose the idyllic Cathedral Gardens in Bury St. Edmunds as the setting. “It’s an incredibly special place for him as it’s where his late-Father lived,” Jade explains. “He wanted it to be spontaneous and a total surprise – and he succeeded! I had no idea.” When the couple started planning their dream day for 1st October, 2020, they couldn’t have foreseen that their guest list of 90 people would have to be narrowed down to just 15 of their closest family and friends. However, the pair made the most of the situation and had an incredible day at The Fennes. Jade continues the story… 41 

We went for an autum nal, glamorous feel, wi th a palette of burgundy, blush and gold. My bouquet con sis ted of ivory roses, wax flowers an d burgundy hydrangeas . On the tables, we had tall gold frame s decorated with flowe rs to fill the space. We stood under a gorgeous floral arch for ou r vows and then we had it as a backdrop for the rec eption.

We picked up 40 pumpkins from Foxes Farm to decorate the day. They were on the staircase, the cake table and piled into vases with fairylights to dress the aisle. We even had two on the top table, which had Mr & Mrs written on them in gold lettering.

Our three-tier cake was a lovely champagne colour decorated with ruffles, sparkles and roses. Each tier was a different delicious flavour: raspberry and white chocolate, salted caramel and chocolate orange. 42

My mum was eager for me to start dress shopp ing; I agreed but said wouldn’t buy anything I , I just wanted to get an ide a of styles. Little did I know that the first dre ss I tried, Delancy by Anna Sorrano, would one! I accessorised it wi be the th a gorgeous belt and a simple diamond nec klace and earrings.

We got crafty and created some of the decor ourselves. I made the table plan from a mirror we had at home, and I wrote all the names on after practising my calligraphy for hours! We named each table after our favourite places in Devon and Cornwall and wrote the names on stones we picked up on our last trip there. Bradley’s stepdad also made us a sweet table from scratch.

Jade’s top tip: “At the end of the day, you’re marrying the one you love. Nothing else matters.” 43 

Restrictions on weddings meant we weren’t allowed to dance or sing. Originally we had a DJ booked, but in the end we made a Spotify playlist of songs that all our guests would enjoy so we could have a little boogie in our seats.

Our guests had to wear a face mask for the ceremony, so we gave personalised masks out as they arrived. We thought it’d look great if everyone had matching ones, so we chose white masks with our initials and wedding date in gold lettering. They’re still very handy in the current situation!

ilys and Phil met on a popular dating site, when Phil’s smile caught Dilys’ eye and Phil found Dilys “cute”. The pair instantly clicked, and it was just four months later that Phil had decided Dilys was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. “It was a private proposal at home,” Dilys tells us. “Phil knows that I don’t like to make a scene, so he kept it low-key when I returned from work one day.” The couple chose to have a summer wedding, and set the date for 27th August, 2019, with That Amazing Place as the backdrop. Dilys fills us in on all the details…

That Amazing Place was the perfect venue for us; we loved the fact that it was exclusive-use and there was on-site accommodation for our loved ones.

We chose a rich colour scheme of gold, pink, burgundy and navy, which ran throughout the styling. The tables were dressed with centrepieces following the same palette, individual wedding plans and a scattering of diamantĂŠs.

Our cake was an amazing four-tier creation with each layer a different flavour: Madagascan vanilla, chocolate, red velvet and zesty lemon.

We used round tables for our meal to create clusters of intimate groups. For our favours, we treated our guests to a gold glittery bag with our names and wedding date on â&#x20AC;&#x201C; inside there was a personalised wine glass, a coaster and a bottle opener. 48

For out sit-down meal we used caterers Premier Crew, and in the evening we dined on delicious African food from a food truck.

A saxophonist set the scene during our wedding breakfast, and then guests were free to explore the whole house and grounds and make use of the free bar!

My Madeline Gardner dress had a sweetheart neckline, corset back and diamanté belt; I personalised it with off-the-shoulder straps. I honestly didn’t believe you got a feeling when you found your dress, but I really did and my friend was brought to tears when she saw me, which reaffirmed my decision!

Phil wore a navy three-piece suit with a burgundy tie and pocket square, which he accessorised with cufflinks inscribed with our wedding date and a gold pocket watch. The groomsmen wore grey suits with gold ties and looked great alongside my bridesmaids’ in pink and gold dresses. 49 

Although I was an hour late to the ceremony (because of hair and make-up overrunning), as soon as I saw Phil the anxiety disappeared. I was so happy to be embarking on this new chapter with a man whose smile is larger than life. Phil was happy to entertain our guests while he waited, but was relieved when I finally made an appearance!

Dilys’ top tip: “Don’t forget to smile and enjoy your day – even when things don’t go to plan. Also, remember to delegate to trusted members of your circle; you don’t have to be superwoman on your big day!”

We have to give a special thanks to our wedding coordinator at the venue, our photographer and videographer. Our pictures are a reminder of our day and will evoke long-lasting memories.

ith a vision to create a styled shoot that was both bold, bohemian and quintessentially British, photographer and shoot coordinator Beth Dowdell had to adapt to our “new normal” to pull off this gorgeous collaborative shoot. “The concept had small beginnings, but within a short space of time it grew into something a lot bigger, brighter – and fluffier!” Beth tells us. “Acknowledging the current climate and restraints on the industry, I decided to use small table groupings with lots of detail to fill the space.” Beth carefully considered the environmental impact of the shoot. “I surrounded myself with suppliers that could identify with my sustainable vision,” she says. “Where possible, we used recycled materials, vegan products and local produce.” Not only has this incredible team of suppliers created an absolutely stunning set of images to inspire future couples, but they’ve also shown how you can support the local economy and be as sustainable as possible.

Q: What are the latest menswear trends to get my husband-to-be looking his best? A classic lounge suit with a tweed waistcoat is proving very popular with our grooms. This look brings a modern twist to a classic style, while keeping it formal enough for the day. We also suggest bringing the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses into the neckwear to ensure the colour palette runs throughout the wedding party, creating a cohesive look.

Q: We’ve found out we can’t legally get married outside. What are our options? Currently, celebrant-led ceremonies are not legal. However, they offer the most freedom of choice in terms of ceremony content and location. Anything goes, whether you want to get married on a farm at sunrise, in your back garden or under a woodland canopy at night. If you book a registrar to conduct your ceremony at a licensed venue, it’s basically the same as what you get in a registry office, just in a venue; all the same legalities and restrictions apply. Even if you want to tie the knot outside, you’ll have to do so under an approved structure such as a gazebo or pavilion. Instead, many couples will have their standard legal ceremony at a registry office on a weekday when it’s least expensive. Then, they’ll splash out on their personalised celebrant ceremony for themselves and their guests at a venue or location of their choice.
