ugs from friends, happy tears during the ceremony and busting moves on the dancefloor – these are some of the things I’ve missed about weddings. Not to mention the flowers, the cake, the delicious food, the anticipation of what the happy couple are wearing, the entertainment… the list goes on! We could get stuck feeling upset for those whose plans have been ravaged – my friends are on their fourth wedding date – instead, I’m going to channel the emotion from all the hard times and missed events to ensure that I make the absolute most of every second with loved ones. This issue is all about celebrating the incredible Bristol and Somerset wedding suppliers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic: from the jewellers (page 49) and venues (page 15) to the make-up artists (page 80) and entertainment companies (page 55). Whether you’re planning your big day for the fourth time or you’re recently engaged, these pages will provide everything you need to plan the ultimate celebration.

After moving into its forever home in December 2020, Rookery Bridal had to stall celebrations when restrictions meant it couldn’t open. “Since we reopened our doors in April, it has been crazy – in a great way!” says owner Sarah Hackett. “It’s been amazing being back doing what we love. We hadn’t had any brides in our brand new boutique in Axbridge, so that made things even more exciting.” Since opening its new premises at The Hayloft, the business has been inundated with great feedback on its new location. “Finally meeting brides again and helping those whose weddings are coming up quickly has been a privilege,” Sarah tells us. “We even managed to get a gown in less than a week for one bride.” The new boutique is packed with exquisite gowns and some exciting new collections. A VENUE WITH A DIFFERENCE
Much ado about weddings
After launching its highly successful virtual tours, The Orangery at Goldney House has announced that the tours will become a permanent fixture. This is great news for those who don’t live in Bristol, but would love to consider this beautifully historic place for their wedding. The venue has also nailed the micro-wedding, with a handful taking place there under COVID restrictions, so future couples wanting a more personal affair will be able to host a smaller celebration there. Besides hosting weddings, the venue is now in the midst of organising a number of incredible public events, kicking off with a performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing on 3rd September, 2021, presented by Illyria Theatre and Goldney Gardens. This is a wonderfully romantic date-night option, and the perfect way to check out the vibe of this Bristol gem as a potential venue. Visit www.bristol.ac.uk/venues/ weddings and make sure you hit follow on the venue’s social media. 10
Wookey Hole is one of the quirkiest venues in the country, and it’s found right here in Somerset. For those newly engaged couples looking for a venue with a difference – one that will be truly memorable for their friends and family – Wookey Hole has got to be on the mustvisit list. Wedding parties here go underground to find beautiful rock formations, clear pools and soft candlelight, as vows are exchanged in caves carved out by the River Axe over millions of years. What’s more, the venue is launching an incredible new range of wedding packages to help couples plan the day of their dreams. The exciting packages will be available from June 2021, and there will also be a bespoke option. Each package will include a cave ceremony, reception and food and drink as standard, while some of the higher tier packages will include attractions and entertainment to make the day extra-special. The venue is also expanding its collection of in-house props, including a sweet stand, doughnut wall, decorations and a photo booth. Get all the details at www.wookey.co.uk

What can you expect? Situated in the heart of Bath’s World Heritage Site, the Roman Baths & Pump Room is one of the most distinctive buildings in the country. The award-winning complex is steeped in history, with its origins dating back 2,000 years. Forming part of the museum by day, the Great Bath has been meticulously renovated while retaining the character of this ancient monument. It’s here at sunrise and sunset that vows can be exchanged, overlooked by the beautiful Bath Abbey. Ceremonies can still take place in wet weather, as shelter is provided by the terrace above.
of champagne on the 2,000-year-old paving. In colder weather, the steam from the baths, coupled with flickering torchlight, creates a magical atmosphere. From mid-June to the end of August, evening ceremonies are not available. The adjoining Grade I listed Pump Room (160 guests) is the ideal party space. Famously frequented by Jane Austen, the elegant room has tall windows, Corinthian columns and a glittering chandelier. Also part of the complex, the Terrace (80 guests) overlooking the Great Bath is an intimate area for events, along with the Reception Hall. Exclusive-use packages are available for up to 290 friends and family. Nearlyweds will be treated to a free menu tasting with the venue’s caterer, Searcys (www.searcys.co.uk).

THE BISHOP’S PALACE & GARDENS, WELLS 01749 988 111 | www.bishopspalace.org.uk What can you expect? Hidden within ancient ramparts and protected by a moat, 14 acres of tranquil, Grade II listed gardens await visitors. With herbaceous borders, pretty pools and the scent of roses in the air, there are endless photo opportunities against the backdrop of the cathedral. In 2016, the gardens were awarded RHS Partner Garden status. The palace dates back to the 13th-century, and the romantic ruins of The Great Hall complement the majesty of the Medieval façade and aweinspiring setting of the gatehouse and moat. The Bishop’s Private Chapel is renowned for its impressive stone tracery and high stainedglass windows.
Let’s celebrate! The adjacent town hall is available for the official I dos. Parties then head to the venue to celebrate in a choice of spaces, including the Medieval Entrance Hall, the vaulted stone Undercroft, the Terrace and the Long Gallery. Guests can also explore the grounds, which are home to the well pools that give the city its name. On the moat are the famous swans, who ring a bell when they want food! We love… Couples tying the knot here receive a free food tasting and complimentary membership for a year.
WOOKEY HOLE CAVES 01749 672 243 | www.wookey.co.uk What can you expect? Featuring spectacular caves in the stunning surroundings of the Mendip Hills, this is a venue with a difference. The Paper Mill boasts a rich heritage, being at the heart of English paper-making for more than 400 years, while the magical caves hold awe-inspiring rock formations for a big day to remember. Surrounded by clear pools and soft candlelight, vows are taken in caves that have been carved out by the River Axe over millions of years. Outside, guests can enjoy rural views, woodland walks and a range of on-site activities, from the fairy garden to pirate-themed mini golf. Let’s celebrate! There are three breathtaking cave chambers available for ceremonies. 16
The largest will hold up to 110 people, but they’re also intimate enough to offer a ceremony for just a few loved ones. The Water Wheel Suite (140 guests) inside the Grade II listed Paper Mill is perfect for those looking for an elegant blank-canvas space. For an unforgettable reception, couples can hold a party in Captain Jacks (200 guests). With its circus-inspired decor, hanging chandeliers and twinkling fairylights, it’s sure to leave guests speechless. We love… From the venue’s Vintage Penny Arcade to Dinosaur Valley and a 30ft King Kong statue, this really is a wedding location like no other. Couples will also receive a complimentary menu tasting and weddingnight accommodation in the on-site hotel.

WICK FARM BATH 01225 722 238 | https://wickfarmbath.co.uk What can you expect? Set on a Medieval farm, this venue has the sweet smell of roses and lavender hanging in the air. Hazel arches decked in twinkling lights overlook the pretty duck pond and fields beyond. There are endless picture-perfect spots from the ancient haybarn and the enclosed garden to the lovely dry stone walls. There’s also 37 acres of stunning farmland with the Westbury White Horse in the background. The Threshing Barn is a 14th-century structure built from Cotswold stone by the monks at Hinton Priory. Inside, guests find original beams and oak flooring throughout. Let’s celebrate! Ceremonies and wedding breakfasts can be held in the Upper Barn (150 guests), before moving to the Lower Barn for a drinks reception and then on to the Marquee or into the grounds if the weather is fine. Alternatively there’s the ancient Hay Barn (90 guests) or al fresco vows are held on the Terrace (130 guests).
The barn’s mezzanine level and the enclosed garden are ideal places for games and entertainment. There’s also a peaceful bridal room for the couple to retreat to. We love… The newlyweds will love spending their first night as a married couple in the newly converted accommodation. They’ll also receive a free food tasting from caterers Strawberry Field.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE In September 2020, Taunton School opened one of the largest hospitality event spaces in Taunton. With a £3.6million investment this impressive purpose-built facility is both architecturally beautiful and energy efficient, featuring state-of-the-art sound, vision and lighting. The venue beautifully combines old and new in the shape of the traditional Gothic stone wall, which is fused with a contemporary glass front and modern pine, offering a sensational space, perfect for the large stylish wedding. The Densham Suite can cater for 300 seated at round tables, or up to 500 guests for an informal reception or evening party. With the added flexibility, this room can be equally subdivided to provide separate areas for the day and evening celebrations. The Old Library is a classic and romantic wood-panelled room with beautiful Gothic windows and attractive golden chandeliers, offering an essence of timeless elegance and a stylish backdrop for your formal wedding breakfast accompanied by 135 guests. REAL WEDDINGS
T
om and Elsa met in the mid-noughties’ coolest way: on MySpace. “We spent two weeks ‘dating’ by going to the local bakery on our school lunch break!” Elsa remembers. She was attracted to Tom’s honesty and happy energy, while Tom was drawn in by the mystery of the new girl at school. After discovering a strong connection and easy-flowing conversation, the pair made it official when Tom asked Elsa to be his girlfriend. It was eleven years down the line when the time was right for Tom to pop the question. The pair were finally settled in their new home after years of a long-distance relationship while Elsa was studying to become a vet. “The proposal was a long time coming, so I was in anticipation of it,” Elsa tells us. “To get around this, Tom had to work out a way to surprise me.” He did this by arriving home early on a random Thursday evening so she wouldn’t suspect a thing. “One moment I was watching TV, the next the lights were off and Tom was on one knee! It certainly was a surprise.” The pair soon set the date for 9th May, 2020 – but for obvious reasons that couldn’t go ahead – so after an agonising wait they finally tied the knot on 17th April, 2021. We caught up with Elsa to find out how they did it…
THE PERFECT SETTING The whole wedding day was planned around the stunning Orangery at Goldney House. “Before we were engaged, I fell in love with the venue when we saw it on the BBC’s Sherlock, when Dr Watson got married there,” Elsa explains. “The rest of our wedding plans snowballed from this beautiful building and gardens.” Leigh Court is just a stone’s throw away, so the couple chose it for their ceremony venue. “It was perfect with its grand staircase, glass roof and sandstone pillars,” the bride says. “The two venues together gave us everything we could ever want.” The pandemic meant that the couple’s original date had to be postponed almost a year to April 2021. “Throughout the planning it felt like we had to change everything,” Elsa says. “When it came down to it, the main thing that changed was the number of guests – going from 90 people to 13. To fit with restrictions, we had to hire a marquee to eat outside at the Orangery, and we weren’t allowed to stay there all evening, which is where our third venue, Clifton Observatory, came in.”
PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON The pair chose a beautiful springtime palette of blue and yellow, with the florals centred around Elsa’s favourite flower: forget-me-nots. They wanted to add a gorgeous scent to the day, so they had garden roses and freesias woven into the design. “The only thing that didn’t match was the arrangement for the top table,” Elsa says. “We chose a red poppy, pink 31

carnation, white rose and ears of wheat – each representing a departed grandparent so that they were with us on the day.” The simple two-tier cake had a timeless look, making the cake toppers the main focus. “Carole’s Cakes made these with great detail to mimic our exact outfits,” Elsa smiles. “We were even accompanied by our two cats, Tembe and Django.” The table plan was designed on a gorgeous vintage mirror to look like a cocktail menu, while the place settings were made from corks with luggage tags attached. Elsa and Tom love cocktails and are often found hunting out speakeasy bars and throwing cocktail parties for friends and family, so it seemed only right that they should name their tables after their favourite tipples. “I designed the table names with detailed cutouts of cocktail glasses on one side and a cocktail recipe on the back,” the bride says. A nod to their love of all things vintage, the pair swapped out champagne flutes for oldfashioned champagne saucers, and they also used a vintage floral suitcase for their cards. After the ceremony, guests dined on a delicious bespoke menu from Fosters Events, which included baked camembert, duck with potatoes Anna and a red-wine jus, followed by decadent banoffee pie. Not allowing the restrictions on parties to dampen their spirits, the couple had garden games for their guests to enjoy, with the space hoppers being a huge hit!
REAL WEDDINGS
AISLE STYLE When it comes to dresses, Elsa loves simple, classic styles; when she saw Barcaza by Pronovias she knew it was the one. “The dress had it all,” she says. “It appeared simple but with a racer-cut back, dropped waist and beautiful buttons it was detailed too. I felt like a princess with the weight and feel of the mikado fabric.” Elsa accessorised her vintage-style look with bespoke duck-egg blue suede shoes by Emmy London and a pretty hair vine, which incorporated forget-me-nots, from Hermione Harbutt. Tom wore a navy Ted Baker suit with a bespoke pale blue double-breasted waistcoat, which made him stand out from the groomsmen. The men all wore yellow socks for a burst of colour and to coordinate with the colour scheme. Elsa’s bridesmaids looked stunning in ice-blue V-neck chiffon dresses.
NAVIGATING THE NEW NORMAL The stresses of the pandemic made wedding planning exhausting, but the couple knew it was all worth it in the end. “So many emotions came into play, from stress and anxiety to fear and disappointment,” Elsa explains. “With the constantly changing rules it felt like we planned four weddings along the way, not just one! However, when the day arrived the sun was shining, all the little details fell into place and having our loved ones around us was a dream come true. We’re also planning a big celebration at Tom’s family farm in July with all of our friends and family!”
MAKING MEMORIES In the morning Elsa couldn’t sit still with excitement. “My whole body was abuzz with butterflies!” She says. “The whole day felt like a dream; it was so full of overwhelming joy, relief and love.” So what parts stood out most for the bride? “Sharing a quiet moment with my dad before the ceremony was wonderful,” she says. “Everything was perfect, from saying our vows outside in the sunshine at Leigh Court, to arriving at Clifton Observatory in the evening to be faced with that breathtaking view of the Clifton Suspension Bridge at sunset! All of our suppliers came together so beautifully to make our vision a reality.” 33
ELSA’S WORDS OF WEDDED WISDOM: “Throughout the day, take moments to step back, drink it all in and commit it all to memory with your new spouse.”

Jessica and Tom’s black-tie wedding was all kinds of glam Images courtesy of Nick Church Photography
T
om and Jessica first met at a family Christmas party when they were teenagers, and stayed in touch throughout their time at university and Tom’s rugby career. Later, having both moved to London separately, they were able to spend more time together. “By the time we finally took a leap of faith and decided to become a couple, I had accepted a teaching job in Dubai, and Tom in China!” Jessica says. “We managed a long-distance relationship for four months before Tom joined me in Dubai.” On 21st December, 2018, exactly 16 years after they first met at the Christmas party, Tom decided to pop the question. “He proposed at sunrise on top of a very windy Brent Knoll,” Jessica tells us. “We could look out and see all of our family homes and connections in Somerset.” Tom had designed a beautiful gold and diamond trilogy ring for Jessica – how could she say no? When it came to setting the date, the pair settled on 22nd December, 2019, and they soon got to work planning their dream winter wedding at Coombe Lodge. Jessica fills us in on all the details…
37
We wanted a Christmas wedding, and we knew that the timeless Coombe Lodge would look beautiful in winter with candlelight, open fires and festive decor. Logistically, it was perfect as our family could stay with us and we didn’t have to travel between venues.

REAL WEDDINGS
IN THE WEST COUNTRY
Grace and Greg’s timeless big day was full of springtime touches and Somerset charm Images courtesy of Bill Bradshaw Photography
G
reg and Grace started as a modern fairytale when they met on a dating app. “I was attracted to her epic laugh and surprisingly deep voice,” Greg laughs. “But mainly her beauty, grace and our shared values.” It was on their second date that they realised how great they were together. “He took me on a tour of his ten favourite items in the British Museum to show off his great intellect,” Grace says. “In fact, it was his wit, goofiness and kind charm that had me wanting more.” Fast forward into their relationship, and Greg was planning the perfect romantic proposal on a trip to the Lake District – although
it didn’t quite go to plan. “Grace got food poisoning so I had to hide the ring until the next best opportunity,” he says. “A few weeks later, I planned a private proposal at home with a romantic dinner on the anniversary of our first date.” The loved-up couple got to work planning their big day, which they knew would have a rustic, country feel. They set the date for 25th May, 2019, with a ceremony at St Catherine’s Church, Drayton, followed by a reception at the gorgeous Midelney Manor. Grace continues the story... 43
We were drawn to the idea of a traditional countryside wedding, which would be close to my family. Midelney Manor was perfect; it’s a stunning historic site with a fantastic spring garden and it was just the right size for our 150-strong guest list. Most importantly, the owner, Alice, was so approachable and attentive – we knew we were in the best hands. It was important to us to include our friends and family as much as possible. My two great friends from university created a homemade Victoria sponge, and a local cake maker supplied four more delicious cakes.
44
We wanted a quintessential springtime look. Our florist, Cottage Garden Flowers, created beautiful seasonal arrangements and incorporated Scottish blooms to represent my family heritage, as well as Greg’s time there as a student and professional. We created a sociable feel with 12 wooden kitchen-style tables split over three rows. As I’m a DT teacher, I designed each place name and laser cut them onto pinewood labels. Greg works in films, so we named each table after one of our favourite movies, such as The Lion King, Gladiator and When Harry Met Sally.
REAL WEDDINGS
We arrived in style in a chauffeur-driven blue and brass vintage 1926 Austin 12/4 Gordon, which was supplied by Age of Elegance.
A natural, springtime feel ran throughout, with florals and greenery running up the marquee poles, hemp table runners and lavender and rosemary-tied napkins. My dad, who’s a stonemason, created a carved and gilded wedding sign.
I wore a fitted Vera Wang halter-neck sheath dress. I loved Meghan Markle’s evening wedding dress, and I was eager to find a similar shape that would show off my shoulders and upper back. I accessorised it with a cathedral-length veil, coordinating flowers in my hair and dyed navy shoes from Rainbow Club.
The men went with classic morning suits with cream doublebreasted waistcoats. They looked great next to my bridesmaids who wore pale grey gowns in their own choice of style. Matching gypsophila crowns finished the look beautifully.
In the church, we had my 16-year-old niece perform an awesome film-music medley on flute, which was followed by six of our friends creating a choir to sing Grow Old With Me by Tom Odell. They were fantastic – you’d think they were professional! We also had an acoustic guitarist to set the scene before the wedding breakfast.
45
GRACE’S TOP TIP: “Get your friends and family involved and have as many people be a part of your day as possible. It may have been our wedding, but it was also a day for all our loved ones to enjoy.”
In the evening, we wanted our guests to really let their hair down. We had a dressing-up box and a frame hanging from a tree for some fun selfies. The party really got started with our band, Motown Gold. They were a huge hit and perfect for all ages.
In the morning, we were both really nervous but so happy. When you’re in the most perfect location, with the most beautiful people and the sun shining down, it all just feels totally right. As soon as we saw each other down the aisle, we knew we’d nailed it!

SLEEP ON IT Dewtopia is Ole Henriksen’s most potent treatment yet. It works hard to deliver visible retexturising and replenishing results overnight, meaning you wake up to a significantly smoother, renewed and brighter complexion. Containing a 20 per cent acid blend of 10 per cent AHAs and 10 per cent PHAs, these exfoliating components are balanced with its replenishing ingredients of birch sap, cotton water and aloe juice, which soothe, soften and condition. You’ll also sleep easy knowing it’s clean, vegan and cruelty free. So, put uneven texture, dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles to bed! Priced at £46, it’s available at www.boots.com
HAUTE COUTURE + BEAUTY
Introducing the new L’Oréal Paris X Elie Saab collaboration. The oh-so stylish bridal make-up collection is an invitation for women to embrace their individuality, amplify their femininity and own the power of grace. Master of style in the fashion world Elie Saab says, “My passion has always been to make women feel beautiful and make-up has the ability to highlight every woman’s natural beauty. As the finishing touch to a look or an accessible way into the world of couture, make-up allows every woman to experience a touch of Elie Saab magic every day.” Built around a palette that’s perfect for achieving a natural bridal look, the range features an eyeshadow palette with nine highly pigmented hues (£15.99), Color Riche Lipstick in four exclusive shades (£9.99), glosses in 3 exclusive bold nude shades (£10.99) and a mascara (£12.99). So, clear some space in your make-up bag and head over to www.lookfantastic.com or www.superdrug.com
IT’S CLAY TIME If you’ve tried traditional clay masks in the past you may have found them to be too drying for your skin type and difficult to rinse off. Step up Glow Recipe’s new Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial (£36). This luxuriously indulgent treatment unclogs pores, exfoliates and smooths all skin types, even the most sensitive, and all in just five minutes with a no-tug wash-off. It’s clay reinvented! BUZZ
BYE BYE TO DRY
When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com
COOLING ALL BLONDES
Fudge Professional Everyday Clean Blonde Damage Rewind is the newest addition to the brand’s cult toning range. A daily gradual toning and instant damage repair shampoo and conditioner, these products are designed to address the specific needs of all blondes. It’s great for those looking for a neutral tone as it enhances highlights and refreshes blonde hues with gentle cleansing and conditioning, while protecting and strengthening strands from within. So, don’t be afraid of over-toning your locks. Think of this duo as a gradual tanner for your hair. Fudge Professional is available to buy from hair salons nationwide or online at uk.fudgeprofessional.com where the two are priced at £23.80 if you buy as a bundle.
BEAUTY NEWS
ROSY GLOW
Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This https://youtu.be/EO3_TuWvc3E silky soft, rose infused, multiuse powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. Click play and check out the bridal look I’ve created using this beauty with the Flawless Beauty Primer, +C Under Eye Brightener, Endless Shade Stick in pink quartz and Endless Silky Eye Pen in black noir. All of which are available at https://pixibeauty.co.uk
THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE

HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 77

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 78
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what
hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily
at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 79

Q&A How to create a sultry, glam beauty look with Jane Dare of Eye Do Makeup
This look consists of darker eyeshadow and liner blended into a lighter eyeshadow to create a smoky effect. This technique can be used for all sorts of colours and creates a dramatic wedding-day look. Before you start, you’ll need to remove all make-up from your eyelids. If you get oily lids, use blotting sheets to absorb the oil before priming the eyes. I love the Urban Decay primer as it fills in surface imperfections, preps lids for all-day wear and provides better depth of colour. To apply the make-up, follow these steps… ♥ Place the lightest shade over the whole eye and blend. Follow with a slightly darker shade in the crease and a third shade on the upper crease. ♥ Blend the colours together, working from the outside in. ♥ Apply the darkest shade in the outer corner and blend into the crease, the top lash line and under your lower lashes. ♥ Add a kohl pencil to your upper and lower water line and blend. Add the darkest shade over the bottom liner and blend towards your nose. ♥ To stop products from slipping, use a damp sponge loaded with translucent powder and apply it underneath your eye, getting as close to the waterline as possible. Let it sit for a few minutes, then remove the excess with a fluffy powder brush. ♥ Add waterproof mascara and lashes, and you can also add a gorgeous flick of waterproof liquid liner. ♥ Finish with a dab of highlighter in the corner of the eye to make it pop, along with a setting spray for all-day hold.

Our experts help you plan your dream day
A VERY BIG HOUSE IN THE COUNTRY Q: How do we dress our country manor venue without overpowering it? Here are our top tips for dressing this type of venue… ♥ Colour. Consider your palette carefully so that it doesn’t clash with the existing decor. Georgian and Palladian interiors work well with pastel tones, while Tudor or Victorian styles suit richer, darker hues. If in doubt, going neutral is a safe bet for a timeless look. White, ivory and cream work well in any setting and can complement or tone down a dramatic interior. ♥ Metallics. Think about your accent colours and metallics. If the room has gold chandeliers and elaborate Rococo mirrors, then golds would work best in your styling. If your room houses an amazing silver collection, then take your cue from that. ♥ Simplicity. As country house interiors are often opulent, with portraits, mirrors and decorative objects, consider simple styling that will enhance this. Perhaps draw focus to an incredible feature fireplace with a foliage or floral display as well as flickering candles in the hearth. ♥ Luxury. This style of venue is all about luxury, so consider draped chiffon chair sashes, full tablescapes and glass charger plates to enhance the sense of grandeur and elegance. Holly Allman-Lopez | Ambience Venue Styling Bath www.ambiencevenuestyling.com
CAUGHT ON CAMERA Q: What are the key photo opportunities during the day that we should schedule time for? One of the best things about booking an experienced photography company is that they will take on these responsibilities for you. Your venue will help you plan your timings and your photographer will get the most out of your day without it feeling like a photoshoot. As well as key moments such as walking down the aisle, signing the register, throwing confetti, making speeches, family portraits and the first dance, it’s all the bits in between that make your day unique. We love to capture the unexpected moments too: the excitement of getting ready, tears of joy and times of laughter. These are the images that weave your story together. Our favourite time for some bonus pictures around your venue is after the wedding breakfast. The sky and light is different at this time of day, and you can catch a beautiful sunset or use sparklers to dramatic effect. Our packages also include a make-up touch up for the bride, so this is an ideal time to have a refresh before the party too! ADD A LITTLE SPARKLE Q: We’re having a traditional marquee wedding. How do we turn this blank canvas space into a wow-factor venue? Chandelier lighting has given majesty, elegance and beauty to interiors for hundreds of years. In ballrooms and galleries their dazzling rays of light have long created an atmosphere of romance and wonder, and you can achieve this look for your wedding too. Chandeliers have always been a part of the visual imagery of fairytales, taking us out of the everyday and into a magical world. In a marquee, which is a temporary structure, these beautiful light fixtures can give the space a sense of permanence and grandeur. Not only a source of light, they’re a spectacular centrepiece and photo opportunity for your big day.
SNAP HAPPY Q: I’ve never had professional photos taken before. How can I feel relaxed and happy in front of the camera on my big day? I get asked this question a lot – so you’re not alone! I spend time getting to know my couples, and use a little trick to help them to relax: talking about how they met. This is when the magic happens, as they start reminiscing about their first date and how they fell in love and soon there are real emotions, cheeky grins and private jokes. On the day, just be yourself and enjoy the moment with your partner – embrace each other, share a kiss or simply take in the scenery. If you feel awkward, communicate this to your photographer as it’s their job to make you feel at ease. I take my couples for a walk and let them wander off without me while I capture them holding hands, giving piggybacks and giggling together. If your relationship is full of love, laughter, dark humour or bad jokes, then I want to see those things – this is the real you. As a documentary photographer, I’m here to capture you. Not the person you think you should be or the person who feels they need to hide their teeth when they smile or suck their tummy in when I take a photo. I just want to see you. After all, isn’t that how you feel in love with each other in the first place? Leah Webber | Wildflower Photography Somerset https://wildflowerwildflowerphotogra4.shootproof.com 88
A SLICE OF THE ACTION Q: What trends should I look out for to make my big-day cake stand out? Your wedding cake should tell a story, without it becoming a novelty cake. It can reflect moments from your life as a couple, details of the gown or your wedding flowers. If you want to show off and have an oversized cake that’s impossible to miss, then go for it! It’s your day, your way. A crisp and smooth cake will always be en vogue, but the finish doesn’t always have to be so precise. A more textured, unfinished look is on trend at the moment, made with buttercream or royal icing and finished with arty metallic elements. You can choose to have one textured tier or go all out. Also, the texture can be bold, such as a rustic stone look, or more discreet by using white on white with a hint of sparkle. Floral cakes remain fashionable, but you can update the look by totally covering your bake with flowers. Handmade blooms in sugar or wafer paper will be met with the most admiration. Contemporary sculptural cakes in unusual shapes will catch the eye, especially when topped with a dramatic rice or wafer-paper sail. We also love skilfully hand-painted floral cakes overlapped with 3D flowers to bring the design to life. Georgiana Tamas | Posh & Cake | www.poshandcake.co.uk

The darling buds
fo May
Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.
STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,
amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.
EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best
starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.
EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
H
Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!
through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
PRETTY AS A PICTURE
As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!
Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.
Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.
We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.
A room full of candles is a must!
For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.
Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.
This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 97
