made it through! What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Bristol and Somerset wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our local wedding superstars. If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you. In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Planning SOS feature (page 61), our round-up of the best wedding venues with outdoor spaces (page 17) and some serious gown inspiration (page 67) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley. Enjoy!

READY FOR ACTION
TO DINE FOR
The pandemic has had a huge impact on couples and the wedding industry. However, for Katie Packham 2020 presented itself with an opportunity to take on the wedding and event business at Pieminister and launch her own company, Mesa Catering. After being the head of events at Pieminister for seven years, and organising events being a passion of hers, this was a very exciting venture for Katie and her team. Starting Mesa Catering meant that Katie could diversify, and she is now partner caterer for all Pieminister events and now The Thali Restaurant too. Couples across the UK can now have their choice of two great Bristol catering options, from formal three-course meals to casual festival-style catering. Find out more at www.mesacatering.co.uk

Recent government restrictions have crushed thousands of couples’ dreams of a big wedding, and venues such as Maunsel House, which are used to hosting large weddings each weekend, have been left empty. When restrictions started to ease, the venue began offering intimate microweddings, and the sound of laughter and joy were brought back to the house. One couple, Josh and Thaissia, changed their plans to meet the 30-guest guideline, then had to quickly rearrange again to a guest list of just 15 people. “The team at Maunsel were brilliant, from our original pre-COVID plans to our twice-rearranged micro-wedding,” Thaissia says. “We had the most amazing day and couldn’t have asked for anything more. Everything ran so smoothly, the food was gorgeous and it felt incredibly special just having our chosen few people there. Despite everything going on, it didn’t take away from the charm of the house, and we’re very much looking forward to coming back in 2022 for our big reception!” Find out more at https://maunselhouse.co.uk

IT’S A CELEBRATION!
We have to send a huge congratulations to Celebration Roadshow. The DJ and wedding host company has recently won the National Highly Commended DJ award at The Wedding Industry Awards, which are voted for by the nominee’s own clients. “It’s so heartwarming hearing all the wonderful comments from our couples and knowing that we made such a positive impact on their day,” director Phill Makepeace tells us. “It’s a great commendation of the time and energy that our DJs put into each wedding. It also drives us to keep learning and pushing the DJ industry as a whole forward – actively thinking of new ways to keep our couples and their guests entertained.” Head to the website to find out how the company can work with you to create your dream day www.celebrationroadshow.co.uk

STYLING IT OUT
Premium venue styling brand, Ambience Venue Styling, has recently expanded with two new stylists based in the South West. With 15 stylists across the country, the company has had its work featured in Vogue, styled shoots for the likes of designer Jenny Packham, and designed hundreds of weddings in its distinctive, showstopping style. The two new stylists, Holly and Kelly, will be working at venues across Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, Bradford on Avon and South Gloucestershire. “We have so many incredible venues locally,” Holly Allman-Lopez says. “We’re so excited to get creative with some unique designs and styling products. We already have bookings for 2022 and 2023; it’s great to see the wedding industry recovering and beginning to thrive again.” The company offers couples a contemporary, elegant style, infusing venues with personality and soul. “Our friendly design process is personal, and most importantly, fun!” Holly says. “Despite restrictions, we’re still available for free design consultations over the phone or via Zoom.” Visit www. ambiencevenuestyling.com
Making scents
We love the fabulous new wedding range from Somerset-based Scentsational Sizzlers. Launched by Calley Owen at the end of 2019, the company offers beautifully fragranced products to fill your home with scent, and is now offering a range of favours for couples who want to gift the products to their loved ones. “My business has gone from strength to strength over the past year,” Calley says. “With everyone spending so much time in their houses, the home fragrance industry was in high demand as people freshened up their spaces. My products are a cleaner, easier and safer alternative to wax melts.” Calley decided to launch a wedding bundle for brides and grooms who wanted to give something a bit different as favours. “Couples can gift something useful that their loved ones can take home and use after the big day to continue the magic,” Calley explains. “The Scentsational Wedding Bundle contains 50 pots of personalised sizzlers in your chosen colours and scents from our menu, and the stickers can be personalised with your name, wedding date and venue.” For more information, visit www.scentsizz.co.uk

THE ORANGERY AT GOLDNEY HOUSE 0117 428 4000 | www.bristol.ac.uk/venues
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Nestled within romantic walled gardens, the enchanting Orangery at Goldney House is a timelessly elegant venue overlooking the city, providing an oasis of calm away from the everyday buzz of Bristol. With a Georgian folly, a shell grotto and ornate water feature, guests can enjoy the serenity of this beautiful space. The Orangery is a historic wisteria-clad building with original stone floors, high ceilings and wonderfully large windows that let in an abundance of light. It benefits from French-style doors that can be opened up on a warm day to let the outside in. There’s also an exclusive area for the newlyweds to take a breath and freshen up during the day.
LET’S CELEBRATE! Ceremonies are held in several spaces, from the intimate Rotunda (14 guests), to the elegant Georgian Drawing Room and Wills Reception Room (80 guests). Most receptions take pace in The Orangery (110 day guests and 150 evening guests), but there are also smaller settings for groups of between 12 and 50 people. WE LOVE… The historical grotto, which is encrusted in shells and quartz, can be hired during the drinks reception as something different for guests to enjoy.

ALDWICK ESTATE
01934 864 404 | www.aldwickestate.co.uk WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Not far from bustling Bristol is this idyllic country farm venue. Panoramic views flow gently through the gardens before skimming Aldwick’s verdant fields to the River Yeo at the farm’s south boundary and Homefield Vineyard to the west. From the valley rises a patchwork of distant farms, fields and forests to the summit of the Mendip Hills. This pastoral beauty sets the scene for memorable photographs. The venue is the perfect marriage of historic and modern; all the charm of a rustic 17th-century farm is happily united with the comforts and efficiency of the 21st century.
www.crossjonesphotography.com
LET’S CELEBRATE! The venue comprises two adjacent stone barns linked by a main reception and the inviting brick-walled Cellar Bar to the rear. The barns are licensed for ceremonies with up to 150 guests. The Old Barn boasts architectural features of the bygone dairy farm, while The New Barn is a light and open space with neutral interiors waiting to be decorated to the couple’s taste. Delicious, bespoke menus are provided by Taste Buds Catering and can be designed to complement the nearlyweds’ wishes. Wine for the wedding breakfast is produced using grapes grown on-site. WE LOVE… Newlyweds receive a complimentary wedding-night stay in The Forge, a well-appointed apartment situated in the grounds.

THE GRANGE
07921 064 398 | www.thegrangesomerset.com WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? The grounds of this magnificent Georgian rectory provide privacy and seclusion with sweeping lawns and pretty floral borders. The terrace, walled gardens and lime avenue are all wonderful backdrops for wedding photographs. Arriving up the driveway, the impressive house has a sense of grandeur. Step inside and guests find it has a warm home-fromhome feel. With 22 luxury double bedrooms, it’s the perfect setting to welcome loved ones for a wedding reception to remember. 18
LET’S CELEBRATE! There are four large reception rooms for celebrations with up to 50 loved ones, with the beautiful Orangery being the centrepiece of the venue. It can be opened up so guests can make their way into the garden, and larger parties may like to hire a marquee. Many local caterers are available, and the vegetable garden and greenhouse here are brimming with organic produce to be utilised. WE LOVE… Couples can extend the celebrations by staying at the venue, which is the perfect holiday home with its pool, tennis court, sauna and idyllic countryside to explore.

With stunning views across the Somerset countryside, The Barn at Cott Farm is nestled in informal grounds that are teeming with cottage-garden blooms in the warmer months. HAPPILY
ever after St. Audries Park was the perfect fairytale backdrop for Charlotte and Dan’s big day Images courtesy of Nancy Calypso Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
W
hen Dan moved to Minehead from Manchester it was only a matter of time before he crossed paths with Charlotte. “Minehead is a small town and we had mutual friends,” Charlotte says. “It didn’t take long to meet. We got on really well as friends and shared the same sense of humour – we just clicked! He’s also the kindest person I know.” The pair started dating in July 2017, and by December 2018 Dan was planning to ask that all-important question. “He proposed to me on the ice-skating rink outside Cribbs Causeway,” Charlotte tells us. “It’s one of my favourite places to go around Christmas time and we both love the festive period. I was definitely surprised!” The pair started planning their dream wedding for 16th May, 2019, and they already knew that St. Audries Park would be the setting. We caught up with Charlotte to get all the details…
THE PERFECT SETTING For as long as she could remember, Charlotte had wanted a fairytale wedding at St. Audries Park. “It really has the wow factor,” she says. “It’s the perfect venue for a modern, yet elegant wedding. We didn’t want to get married in a church, so we liked the fact that it has the amazing Orangery for the ceremony. As soon as we viewed it, we were completely blown away. It was so beautiful and secluded – the ideal setting for us.” The fact that they could have the whole wedding day there was a huge plus point, and the accommodation was another big draw. “Myself, my mum and my bridesmaids were able to stay at St. Audries the night before in a wonderful cottage with a hot tub,” Charlotte says. “Dan’s family were all travelling down from Manchester and they could stay on site too. The rooms were outstanding and the staff were incredibly polite and helpful.”
PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON The couple opted for a modern and elegant feel to the day, choosing a palette of pink and white. The Orangery was adorned with white, pale pink and dusky pink roses – Charlotte’s favourite flowers – and ranunculi. On the tables were white birdcages with elegant candles inside. “I’m obsessed with Disney,” Charlotte says. “Our table numbers each had a Disney quote on them. We also hired a huge pink and white flower wall, which made a gorgeous photo backdrop.” The pair’s incredible five-tier cake received a lot of compliments. “It was decorated with layers of white ruffles, marble effect, pale pink icing, shiny silver leaf and a Mr and Mrs Merrington cake topper,” Charlotte says. “Inside, the flavours were chocolate fudge, salted caramel, red velvet, 29

REAL WEDDINGS white chocolate and raspberry and vanilla and champagne.” Guests were also treated to a delicious wedding breakfast provided by the venue, with a choice of chicken, beef or sea bass.
AISLE STYLE Charlotte fell in love with her Justin Alexander dress as soon as she saw it. “The train was so long, which gave it the wow factor,” Charlotte says. “I originally thought that I would choose a more simple, fitted dress, but when I tried on mine I knew it was the one.” She teamed it with a pretty belt, which the boutique arranged to have sewn on to the gown, and shoes that were inspired by Carrie Bradshaw’s famous Manolo Blahniks. “My best friend bought me a beautiful floral hairclip to wear over the top of my veil,” Charlotte says. “I also wore my Tiffany bracelet as my something old.” The men looked dashing in classic black suits with pink accessories. Two of the bridesmaids wore pale pink gowns, and two were in dusky lilac. “I thought it made a nice contrast,” Charlotte says. “My niece was a flowergirl, and she wore a white dress with a pale pink sash.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE The venue provided its own DJ for the couple’s reception, the music got all their friends and family up on the dancefloor. “We also hired a photo booth for the evening, which our guests loved,” Charlotte tells us. “I think that’s where everyone spent most of their time! There were lots of funny props so it was great fun getting everyone involved.” Later on, there was a surprise in store for the newlyweds. “We didn’t know, but my mum had arranged a firework display for the end of the night,” Charlotte smiles. “It was such a memorable moment and a magical ending to our special day.”
MAKING MEMORIES In the morning, both Charlotte and Dan were extremely nervous, but excited at the same time. “We couldn’t wait to be married,” Charlotte says. “The day went so fast; we didn’t want it to end. It sounds like a cliché, but the whole day was perfect. I wanted my dream wedding and St. Audries delivered.” They knew they couldn’t have done it all without a talented team of wedding businesses. “All of our suppliers provided a fantastic service,” Charlotte says. “Our photographer, Nancy Calypso Photography, was incredible. We booked her until the first dance, but one of my bridesmaids told her about the firework display at the end of the night, so she ended up returning a few hours later! Our wedding manager from the venue, Courtney, was so helpful throughout the whole process – we can’t thank her enough.”
CHARLOTTE’S WORDS OF WEDDED WISDOM: “The more organised you are early on, the less stress you will feel closer to the wedding. I loved knowing that I had everything sorted and I could just focus on looking forward to the big day.” 31

L
uke and Kimberley’s relationship blossomed so naturally. They knew each other as kids, grew up going to the same events and eventually socialised in the same circles as adults. It was only a matter of time before they got together. Fast-forward into their relationship, and Luke was planning the perfect way to pop the question. “I proposed after a safari holiday in Kenya with friends,” Luke says. “After landing at Heathrow, we journeyed back to Somerset where I had arranged a family meal at Kim’s parents’ dairy farm in Mark. After dinner with Kim’s mum, dad and grandad, we were sat around the table when I asked Kim to marry me.” After taking a moment to establish what Luke was asking, Kim gave a resounding “Yes!” When they started planning their day for 21st August, 2020, the couple couldn’t have imagined the events that were about to unfold in the world. However, they adapted their plans and managed to host a wonderfully intimate wedding under government restrictions at Perry Farm, the bride’s family home. Kim gives us the lowdown… 35

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD Holbrook Manor provided the idyllic backdrop to Ellie and Tom’s big day Images courtesy of Nicky Hill Photography
T
om and Ellie were in the same group of friends throughout sixth form college, but while Tom thought Ellie was “hot” and “wife material” it never progressed past friendship. It was when Tom joined the Royal Navy that things started to change. Like something from an old romantic film, the pair started writing letters to each other. “He was funny, handsome and attentive,” Ellie says. “After his phase one training, I agreed to go on a date with him.” After the first date quickly came the second, and the rest is history.
Tom was soon planning how to pop the question. He bought a beautiful ring, and decided the perfect place would be Maiden Castle in Dorset. “I chose the castle setting because she is my princess,” Tom says. “I had the ring for at least a month while I waited for a break in the bad weather of 2017!” Ellie was totally surprised, and through the tears she managed to say “Yes!” The couple soon started planning their wedding for 9th May, 2019, and chose Holbrook Manor as their dream venue. Ellie tells us how it all came about… 41
The location, size, price – everything that we wanted in a venue was in one place. The grounds are beautiful and there were plenty of places for photos. There was also the option for guests to stay overnight and have breakfast the next day to extend the celebrations.
We chose a palette of pastel pink and light grey to run throughout the day, and our flowers comprised light pink roses, peonies and gypsophila. On the tables we had log slices decorated with flowers and candles is various sizes. White lace bunting hung overhead and light grey bows adorned the chairs. 42
REAL WEDDINGS
Instead of a cake, we had a tower of cupcakes, which were iced in our colour scheme. We chose our favourite flavours: red velvet, chocolate and vanilla.
Two of our talented bridesmaids handmade our table plan, order-of-service and invitations. To reflect Tom’s Royal Navy connections, we had handmade sailboats for place settings and we named each table after units he has served with. We also treated our guests to personalised Love Hearts as favours.
Harpist Siona Stockel performed during the ceremony and entertained our guests for the drinks reception. In the evening, a DJ and a magic selfie mirror went down a storm with our loved ones – especially all the props. We loved that it showed what happened as the evening progressed and more drinks were consumed!
I loved my beautiful Madeline Gardner dress, which I found in Butterfly Brides in Poundbury.
43
Tom looked dashing in his No. 1 dress uniform. The groomsmen wore light grey suits with checked waistcoats and pink accessories. They looked great alongside my bridesmaids in full-length grey gowns.
We were both nervous in the morning, and wanted everything to be perfect. As soon as we laid eyes on each other as I walked down the aisle all the nerves disappeared.
ELLIE’S TOP TIP: “Take time away from everyone to enjoy each other’s company and watch everyone who came to your special day.”
Tom got his age wrong on the wedding certificate, which I spotted just before we signed it. We had to walk back down the aisle with an empty envelope as it was getting rewritten – but it could have been a very expensive mistake!
All our suppliers were fantastic and provided a brilliant service. Our photographer, Nicky Hill, was exceptional; she got all the shots we wanted and more while making us feel totally at ease being photographed all day.

hat could be more beautiful than a wedding in the heart of an enchanting forest? Woodlands evoke a magical feeling of being at one with nature, something that photographer and shoot coordinator Maria Madison wanted to explore. “An intimate exchange of vows under majestic trees creates a strong emotion,” Maria says. “The setting of Stockhill Wood was so naturally beautiful that it didn’t require much decoration – meaning we could keep supplier numbers to a minimum while working within restrictions. We went for an organic vibe, which showcased the colours and atmosphere of the woods, without taking away from it.” You’re going to love these stunning images…

We get unmissable wed-min advice from local experts
W
e know that planning a wedding can be stressful at times – even more so during a pandemic. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a team of talented wedding suppliers to give you their top tips? Well, that’s where we come in! We’ve pulled together a whole host of advice from some of Bristol and Somerset’s best wedding companies to help you get that to-do list ticked off…
www.evokepictures.com
Round one
BARLEY WOOD
What are your top tips for booking a venue? Always follow your heart and don’t be scared to be different! Focus on your ideas and find a venue that reflects your personalities and vision. How can you help couples adapt their day to different restrictions? Our hire is for a whole weekend, which enables flexibility and the option of having two smaller celebrations. How about a wedding on the Saturday and a small barbecue with friends on the Sunday to fit with restrictions on guest numbers? It’s your weekend and your chance to plan it your way. Holly Piper | www.barleywood.org
BATH’S HISTORIC VENUES
What are your top tips for booking a venue? Venues and suppliers often have reduced fees for midweek weddings, and it’s likely there will be a bigger selection of suppliers and venues available. Midweek dates mean you get more choice and more of your budget to spend on the aspects that are most important to you. What’s your advice to those getting married during the pandemic? With frequently changing restrictions, couples may have to change their plans at short notice. The Roman Baths accommodates more than 100 guests, but it’s timeless ambience also makes it perfect for elopements. If you choose a venue you really love, and it’s flexible on numbers, it will be magical irrespective of the amount of guests attending.
THE BARN AT COTT FARM
www.emma-janephotography.co.uk
Gemma Reynolds | www.bathvenues.co.uk
What are your top tips for hosting a sustainable wedding? Where possible, have your ceremony and reception at the same venue, or within walking distance, to avoid guests needing to make two journeys by car. You can further reduce the carbon footprint of your day by encouraging guests to travel together. You can reuse decor throughout your day. For example, by moving your ceremony elements into your reception space. Permanent venues are usually fully furnished, which reduces unnecessary deliveries of equipment. Try to avoid any single-use plastic by hiring crockery and cutlery. If you can have an outdoor ceremony, you’ll not only be surrounded by the beauty of nature, meaning less decor is needed, but you’ll be in natural sunlight, which reduces energy consumption and provides gorgeous photos. Lastly, we’re lucky enough to be based in Somerset, where there’s no excuse not to choose delicious locally sourced food and drink for your wedding! Becca Seyfried | https://cottfarmwedding.co.uk 61
Round two BARNY LEE MARQUEES
What are your top tips for booking a marquee? In the early stages of planning you may have an idea of where you want to position your marquee. At our site visit, we will take into consideration the access, position of the marquee and weather scenarios. It’s always helpful to have a secondary site for us to view as this may be a better spot in terms of logistics. How can you help couples adapt their day to different restrictions? Our marquees come in various sizes so we can accommodate any size of wedding. It’s just as important at an intimate wedding, whether it’s in a field or your back garden, to pay attention to detail. It’s a great opportunity to offer a personal touch to your decorations as you celebrate with close family and friends. Barny Lee | https://barnyleemarquees.co.uk
14 & SIXPENCE
What are your top tips for finding the perfect wedding dress? We suggest allowing six to 12 months prior to your big day to start looking for your dress. Bring a couple of people who love you the most – perhaps your mum and best friend. You may already have some ideas on Pinterest, some favourite designers or images of dresses you think will work. These are a great starting point, but we’ll encourage you to try a selection of styles so you’ve tried enough, but importantly not too many, so you can find the one. How can you help brides who have had to move their wedding date and haven’t been able to shop for their dress? If your wedding is within six months, don’t worry! You still have options and we can find you a beautiful dress quickly. Most of our designers have gowns in stock, so we can have access to lots of styles in two to four weeks. We also have an amazing selection of off-the-peg gowns, as well as our One & Only department, which stocks previous season dresses at purse-friendly prices.

AMBIENCE VENUE STYLING BRISTOL
What are your top tips for finding your wedding style? The first thing to consider is the look and feel of your day. Think about possible colour palettes and how they lend themselves to your ceremony and reception room. There are lots of tools you can use for inspiration, such as Pinterest and magazines. These will help draw out your style and you can then work with a stylist who can represent this and help you achieve your dream look. Some stylists offer packages that can be limiting, leaving you with items you don’t really need. We work with our clients to create something bespoke, so you get the most out of your budget. How can you help couples scale back their day under restrictions? While it may be hard cutting down your guest list, the plus side is that you can use the spare budget on the items you may have been longing for, such as an extravagant floral display. A smaller celebration means you can spend quality time with those that are closest to you. You can also speak to your venue about live-streaming your ceremony for those who can’t be there. PLANNING SOS
CREATIVE COLLECTIONS
Why should couples book a venue stylist? Booking a stylist takes away so much stress. You should be relaxing with your bridal party and enjoying getting ready on your wedding morning, not worrying about putting favours out on the tabes! Find a stylist that you trust and understands your vision, that way you’ll be confident that they will set everything up how you imagined it. An expert will help you realise your budget, and can show where to cut corners if money is tight. They have a lot of insider knowledge and can offer the best advice for your needs. How can you help couples downsize their day under restrictions? Stylists can come up with amazing ways to help create an intimate wedding. Find a supplier who is sympathetic and understanding; they’ll do their utmost to make sure your day is as special as you want it to be. Small weddings don’t have to be small on style. Alison Hieron | www.creativecollections.uk
TOPIKKI
What are your top tips for choosing wedding stationery? Firstly, think about the style of your venue. A modern setting would fit with a simple, clean look, while a manor house suits crystal embellishment and lace. Also, look at your own personalities and interests, and combine this with the colour scheme you have in mind. How can you help couples who have had to downscale their wedding? If your stationery has already been sent, there’s no need to remake everything. If downsizing, a nice note card or letter to match your previous stationery to apologise and inform those who can no longer come will work well. Then a change-of-date card (if the venue has remained the same) can be sent to your smaller guest list.
Round three
Gaynor Page | https://topikki.co.uk
ANGEL’S KITCHEN
What are your top tips for getting your dream wedding cake? Secure your chosen suppliers early. When booking a cake with me, a deposit of £50 secures your spot in my diary. You’ll also receive a delicious box of samples and we can start creating images of your perfect cake. It’s good to have an idea of what you want your day to look like; you can take this vision to all of your suppliers and the day will flow beautifully. Be realistic about budgets, particularly with cake, as couples are often surprised by the price tag. Remember, many hours of planning and creating are involved before your cake even gets baked. We love what we do and want to create something truly special for you. How can you help couples adapt and downscale their day under restrictions? If you still want a showstopping cake, secret dummy tiers can be used. Alternatively, two-tier cakes can still be very elegant – just ask your cake maker to make the tiers tall. Sugar flowers and sparkle will add instant glamour. Kerry Hemms | www.angelskitchen.co.uk 63
Round four SIONA STOCKEL – HARPIST & SOPRANO
What are your top tips for booking a live musician? Many couples have a clear idea about the music they want for their evening party – but don’t forget the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast. Live music can make an emotional and visual impact, and it’s far more personal than recorded music. It will set the scene beautifully and provide entertainment for those lull times between key moments. People often assume that I only play classical music. In fact, I specialise in contemporary covers and film scores, which is a wonderful surprise for your guests. What’s your advice for those couples having to downscale their day? Some of the best weddings I have performed at in the last 25 years were small, intimate ones. You might now have the extra budget for those luxury touches like live music, which you might not have been able to include otherwise, and will make your wedding one to remember.

BOOTH NINETEEN
What are your top tips for booking a photo booth? Plan logistics for when your suppliers will arrive. If they know where and when to unload their equipment, you may be able to avoid your guests seeing the unsightly setting up process by using a separate room. If you’re limited on space, find out if your supplier offers idle time; this means they set up in advance ready for activation. Photo booths come in all shapes and sizes, with many different features. Make sure your package has the most appropriate elements for you, whether that’s a great style to suit your venue or ensuring you have a guest book full of prints and an online gallery to look back on.

CELEBRATION ROADSHOW
What are your top tips for booking wedding entertainment with ever-changing restrictions? Look for entertainers that think outside the box. How will they ensure your guests have a good time? Our trained wedding hosts are brimming with great ideas. Invest in the wedding breakfast if you’re not able to go ahead with an evening party because of government restrictions. By hiring a DJ who is also trained as a host or master of ceremonies, you can really bring the wedding breakfast to life. Think quizzes, sweepstakes for the speeches or a Mr & Mrs spoof game. Our selfie picture system has also been a great success, with photos being streamed to those who can’t attend the celebration. Phill Makepeace | www.celebrationroadshow.co.uk

We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.
Absolutely
FLAWLESS

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately
that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.
Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Q&A
RED CARPET GLAMOUR
Q How do I create a glam Hollywood-style make-up look for my wedding? There’s nothing better than the beauty looks from the golden age of Hollywood, from the 1920s through to the 1950s. I love the gorgeously defined makeup of the ’40s, which is all about exaggerating your features to make your lips and eyes appear bigger. A satin scarlet lip, cut-crease eyeshadow and false lashes take this to the next level. To create your vintage Hollywood look, follow these steps… ❤ Begin by priming your skin before applying concealer and a colour-matched foundation. Add blush and set with a translucent powder and setting spray. ❤ Line along your upper lash line, then extend upwards and outwards to create a feline flick. If you have trouble with this, draw a dot where you want your winged liner to finish, then draw towards the dot. ❤ Add a deliciously bold statement to your film-star look while bringing it into the modern day with the Hollywood Lips matte liquid lipstick by Charlotte Tilbury. It glides on like a gloss, nurtures like a cream and gives full coverage. Jane Dare | Eye Do Makeup www.eyedomakeup.co.uk 80
THE HEAT IS ON
Q We’re having an outdoor summer wedding. What dress styles will keep me cool and comfortable? Soft, flowing, lightweight fabrics such as chiffon, crepe or tulle tend to be best for summer weddings, although other fabrics can work too. Keep in mind the temperature, setting and movement requirements. For example, a mermaid-style gown looks amazing on most brides, but it’s not practical to climb into a carriage or even lots of stairs as it will restrict your movement. Consider going strapless or having loose-fitting sleeves. Air circulation is very important to stop you from sweating and to keep you feeling comfortable. A light, floaty gown made in a luxurious breathable fabric will keep you cool, well ventilated and also give you the freedom to dance the night away. BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Q I want a relaxed, boho look for my wedding, but I still want my hair to look perfect all day. What do you suggest? To me, a boho look screams loose waves, braids and free-flowing hair – it’s my favourite bridal hairstyle. Incorporating a fishtail braid can help to keep structure in the style, whether you have an up do or half up do, and it will create that boho vibe you want. Creating a loose wave requires a strong but soft fixing spray and a large barrel wand. Your chosen hairstylist will use products at your trial and ask for your feedback. If the style didn’t stay long enough for you, then there’s always a stronger product we can use! Trials are essential for your stylist to not only get to know you, but also your hair. It’s where we find the right look and products, which will be the secret to success on your wedding day. Katie Winter | Bristol Bridal Hair www.bristolbridalhair.co.uk

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.
Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.
PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love
Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.
No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper. 82
Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on!

HOT TOPIC Our experts help you plan a relaxed, laid-back wedding to remember
Boho beauty
Q: What flowers should we choose for a summery boho wedding? Bohemian weddings are relaxed and ethereal – let your imagination run wild! I take a natural and sustainable approach to floristry, by avoiding floral foam, growing my own flowers and opting for seasonal varieties wherever possible. Bohemian-style flowers are textured, unstructured and full of blooms and foliage. They have a romantic, dreamy feel, which is inspired by nature. British flowers, herbs and greenery are in their prime during the summer months. They not only look glorious, but the scent is incredible too. I will be cutting sweet peas, geranium leaves and herbs for their fragrance. Cosmos seem to dance in a bouquet and give it movement, while nigella, cornflowers, celosias, poppies, lupins and geums give a fantastic pop of colour. Roses and peonies provide a whimsical feel, while foxgloves, delphiniums, dahlias and amaranthus add height. Imagine the most abundant and incredible cottage garden has erupted from the ground and entwined its effortless beauty and wildness into floral arches, meadow shapes and hanging installations. Grab your flower crown and be inspired by the beauty of nature.

RUSTIC-CHIC
Q: How can we bring a rustic vibe to our blank-canvas barn venue? A barn venue is the perfect setting for your theme and is ideal for putting your own stamp on the day. I love to repurpose vintage props and decor and use them to style distinct areas. You could have a welcome area for your guests to get a taste of your day as they arrive, as well as displays around your table plan and cake table. I always arrange props in groups of three: a tall, mid-level and lowheight element to add interest. I’ll then weave in foliage, florals for texture and flickering candlelight to add to the atmosphere. This will give a rustic-chic look that you’ll love. EXPERT ADVICE
FREE SPIRITS
Q: How can I create a relaxed, bohemian bridal look? Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, involving artistic and spiritual pursuits. Boho-chic is a style of fashion drawing on various bohemian and hippie influences. When it comes to boho-style wedding dresses, we think of a whimsical, romantic, soft style. Earthy and inspired by nature, gowns are often simpler in design but with intricate detail. For example, crochet or a delicate lace combined with silks, satins or chiffons. The boho bride’s effortless dress should be teamed with a stunning loosetied bouquet with colour, greenery and the addition of pampas grass or dried foliage. Finish the look with the ultimate boho accessory: a flower crown. If you want to take the look to its fullest, opt for flat shoes and an ankle bracelet. Colour pop!
Q: We’re having a quirky and colourful wedding. How do we incorporate this theme into our cake design? There are so many different ways we can bring your cake to life with colour. My favourite way is with flowers. We can create delicate sugar roses, peonies and blossoms, all in a colour palette to complement your theme beautifully. Alternatively, fresh and silk blooms now come in an abundance of beautifully bright shades and make an excellent choice if you are working to a budget. Ribbons are another great option to add a pop of colour. A beautiful loose silk bow cascading down a crisp white cake creates immediate impact, and the colour choices are endless. Retreat to ty the ci
Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital
A
s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.
STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a
whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.
EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike
that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.
EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
