It ’s showtime I

t dawned on me just recently that I have just six months left until I transform from editor into bridesmaid extraordinaire! Is anyone else freaked out by how quickly time passes en route to W-day? Despite spending my days telling all of you lovely people how to plan, I have very much not practised what I’ve preached and am now panicking about getting into shape. So, it’s a good job indeed that I’m not the bride, who fortunately is literally the most organised person I’ve ever met. That being said, the bride tribe (plus groom) recently decided to hit a wedding show at the venue hosted by our sister company County Wedding Events, looking for finishing touches and bridesmaid dresses. While I’ve attended many a wedding fair in my time with my professional hat on, nothing beats the excitement of experiencing one from the other side of the fence. So, to help you get the most out of your next visit to a wedding fair, I’ve compiled my top three tips. 1. Pre-register. Make sure you sign up on the organisers website. CWE is offering timed entry slots at the moment to keep you all safe and allow you to enjoy your browsing comfortably. 2. Be prepared. Find out who’s exhibiting beforehand and make up a hit list of the suppliers you want to check out. You can usually find this info on the event’s website, but if not there’ll likely be show guide available, so grab one when you arrive and settle down with a cuppa or glass of bubbly before you venture any further. 3. Snap happy. Make sure your smart phone is fully charged and be ready to get as many pics as you can of the things you love. Big events can be a little daunting and the last thing you want is to get home and forget where you saw that incredible cake. And now, without further ado, I bring you the latest issue of Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding. Check out these pages for my issue highlights to ensure you don’t miss a thing – we have a world of wedspiration waiting for you as always.

Don’t miss fashion editor Claire’s round up of 2022’s top bridal fashion trends.

EDITOR’S LETTER

I love these incredible paper flowers by Creative Collections for Ellen and Ashley’s wedding. They feature throughout from backdrop to centrepieces. Best of all? They can be treasured forever.

Dilly the Morris Minor took Jenny and Jason across Clifton Suspension bridge as they sat on the parcel shelf! “Jason hates being the centre of attention, but he loved all the cheers as we rode around in Dilly. I found it especially poignant as it brought smiles to people’s faces at a difficult time just after the second lockdown,” Jenny told us.

INDUSTRIAL CHIC

Court Farm offers the ideal blank canvas and stunning setting for you to create your own special rustic-style country wedding weekend. Anything goes, from a traditional three-course wedding breakfast to a ceilidh and hog roast, the venue is so versatile, the choice is yours. Nestled amongst the grounds is a large barn with exposed brick walls and a high-beamed roof overlooking the apple orchard and duck pond and now the team have added to this offering with a newly converted second barn, the Woolshed. A beautiful industrial-chic space, it works brilliantly as a banqueting space for the modern-minded, and is a great alternative to a marquee. It seats up to 115 and is furnished with trestle tables and benches, which can be arranged to suit your plans, as well as rustic lighting. Find out more at www.courtfarmstanderwick.co.uk

RELAX AND UNWIND

Somerset recently saw the launch of Transformations, a new luxury day spa, based in the idyllic Dillington Estate on the outskirts of Illminster. Making the most of the Covid lockdown break for the beauty industry, owner Kerry Hole-Stuart relocated and rebranded from her previous location in Illminster town, launching the luxurious Transformations and opening its doors to those seeking hair, beauty and aesthetics treatments. Kerry’s goal from the outset of owning her own salon was to provide her clients with a relaxing environment perfectly suited to pure indulgence. Utilising the new location she was able to take this to the next level with the new day spa – somewhere her clients can receive superior treatments and top to toe relaxation for both men and women alike. The boutique day spa has capacity to host up to six guests at one time, meaning it’s the ideal place for celebratory gettogethers, while the boutique style means it’ll never get too overwhelming if you’re in need of some pre-wedding R&R and would rather fly solo. Find out more at www.transformations.org.uk

NEW VENUE ALERT!

Waterside Country Barn is a new venue in Somerset, a one-of-a-kind lakeside gem that’s only available for a limited number of weddings each year. Offering the opportunity for its couples to enjoy full and exclusive use of the wedding barn and the six-acre field it sits in, it also boasts four glamping accommodation units, sleeping up to 10 for the whole weekend. You have the choice of two wedding packages or the chance to completely create your own bespoke version. The owners are working with The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation, offering use of the venue free of charge to terminally ill brides and grooms and are keen to keep it local, so are looking to partner with the cream of West Country suppliers. There are plenty of exciting plans afoot for their first year in business, so keep your eyes on www.watersidecountrybarn.co.uk to stay up to date.

EDITOR’S SPOTLIGHT

We know there’ll be a lot of you out there, newly engaged over the Christmas period, wondering where to start. A question we often get asked is: what happens once the venue is booked – how do we sort out the legal bit? We turned to the Somerset Registration Service’s marketing officer, Amber Packer-Hughes, for advice. Amber says, “The most important next step is to book your registrar. We take bookings up to two years ahead here in Somerset, though other districts vary. Do be flexible about the exact ceremony time, in case registrars already have a lot of bookings in their diary. We’ll always do our best to fit your plans and normally have space, but there are only so many 2pm slots we can offer! “The other legal step is booking your Notice of Marriage appointment. It needs to happen at least 28 days in advance, but we recommend around three to six months before the big day. This is a face-to-face meeting you both need to attend in the district where you live, even if you’re marrying elsewhere. Once completed, you have up to a year to marry at your chosen venue. This is a handy flexibility in case disaster strikes and you need to postpone (we’re looking at you Covid!). If you change venue you’ll need to give notice again, so make sure your plans are firm first. The registrars will bring your paperwork on the day, so that’s one less thing to add to your to-do list.” For further information head over to www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk

Court Farm offers extensive grounds and the perfect blank canvas to create your own uniquely styled rustic wedding. A beautiful reception courtyard, The Woolshed for dining, historic Rustic Barn for dancing and stylish boutique onsite accommodation.

ccording to Jason, it was love at first sight when he met Jenny online. The pair went for a meal together in Weston-super-Mare and Jenny soon fell for Jason’s sense of humour, “He makes me laugh every day,” she tells us. When a friend got ill and couldn’t go to see the Stereophonics with Jenny, Jason stepped in. The couple stayed in a hotel that night and on the way back to Bristol stopped at Porthcawl. As they walked on the beach, Jason paused to write, “will you marry me?” in the sand. It was a total surprise for Jenny, but of course she said “yes.” The Square Club in Berkley Square, Clifton, was the first wedding venue the two visited and quickly knew it was the one, booking it straight away. “We loved the intimacy of it, as well as its cocktail-bar style, which suited us really well,” Jenny explains. Read on as the bride gives us the lowdown on their big day, 10th July 2021...

SETTING THE SCENE Jenny and Jason’s venue styling centred around a supermodern palette of blush pink, ivory, green and gold. Centrepieces featured gold candelabras, foliage and small gold vases filled with flowers. There wasn’t a formal table plan as such, since the guest list was halved to 30 due to Covid restrictions, so everyone was encouraged to mix and mingle. They were each given a tequila glass as wedding favours, engraved with the newlyweds’ names and wedding date. All assembled were asked to drink a shot from it, which no doubt helped to create a lively atmosphere. The couple also treated their loved ones to some chocolates and wax melts to take home. The Square Club served a three course meal for the wedding breakfast, followed by a barbecue later in the evening. The semi-naked two-tier cake was part lemon drizzle and part Victoria sponge, decorated with gold ribbon and fresh flowers. We love Dilly the Morris Minor who drove Jenny and Jason across Clifton Suspension bridge and back as they sat on the parcel shelf! “Honking the cute horn as we drove was definitely one of the stand-out moments,” Jenny remembers. “Jason hates being the centre of attention, but he loved all the cheers as we rode around in Dilly. I found it especially poignant as it brought smiles to people’s faces at a difficult time just after the second lockdown,” she continues. Once the festivities drew to a close bang on the Covid curfew at 10pm, the newlyweds were persuaded to head to Browns Bar, where they were met with a standing ovation and a chorus of Cliff Richard’s Eurovision hit, Congratulations, from the patrons. 27

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Jenny selected a simple Bardot-style satin dress for her big day. “I didn’t want anything too fussy, just classic,” she explains. Although, she did still manage to add a touch of grandeur with a long train, which she fastened up for the evening. The bride’s daughters bought her some delicate heart earrings and a short necklace to wear, and she paired these with the Tiffany bracelet Jason gave to her on their first Christmas together. The groom looked dapper in his stylish beige heavy linen suit, which he wore with a floral tie made from Liberty fabric. His best man wore a navy suit with matching buttonhole, and Jenny’s 14-year-old daughter wasn’t sold on the ideal of a bridesmaid dress, so she donned a cream waistcoat, shirt and trousers with a pink bow tie. She looked super-smart when she stood up to give a speech at the reception and gave everyone the giggles when she mentioned her mum’s past “sketchy boyfriends!” The bride’s two eldest daughters reported for bridesmaid duties wearing beautiful blush pink Grecian-style dresses, while her three granddaughters acted as flowergirls and wore handmade ivory tutu dresses.

THE GETAWAY Jenny and Jason had planned to honeymoon in Halkidiki, Greece but again due to the pandemic, plans were changed. However, they still managed to get away for a mini-moon and headed down to Devon for a few days, where they enjoyed some amazing weather. Meanwhile, they moved their Greece trip to coincide with their first wedding anniversary.

WITH THANKS The bride says, “Having Becky as our photographer was really special as I worked with her on the same District Nursing Team. She was just so wonderful and went the extra mile to produce amazingly beautiful photographs for us. All of our guests mentioned how fab she was! “We’re also grateful to Jenni, who gave us such a bespoke service with Dilly the Morris Minor. She really made our trips so much fun, both to the venue with my daughter who gave me away, and around Clifton once we were married.” 29

REAL WEDDINGS

Ellen and Ashley said “I do” at beautiful Crowcombe Court in Somerset Images courtesy of Nancy Calypso Photography

E

llen and Ashley met online via eHarmony. Unbeknownst to Ashley when he sent his first message to her, Ellen was in the process of cancelling her membership and therefore couldn’t reply to him. However, when she decided to sign up again over Christmas 2019, his message was still there waiting for her. She replied straight away and they went on their first date on 4th January, 2020. “By the next day, it was Facebook official!” Ellen says. “The conversation was never forced and felt as if we’d known each other for years,” she continues. Ashley proposed on Torquay Pier on Ellen’s 35th birthday. They’d made the trip to celebrate the occasion as well as the easing of lockdown. “It wasn’t really a surprise as Ashley had called me in June when he was in the jewellers buying the ring to check if I preferred white gold or yellow, so I knew what he had planned. We’d gone to a restaurant on the seafront for dinner and took a walk along the pier afterwards at which point he got down on one knee and popped the question,” Ellen shares. Ellen learned of Crowcombe Court from a friend but had up to then been unaware of its existence. Just a five-minute drive from their home, they booked a visit. Ellen explains, “As we walked into the Great Hall, we instantly knew it was the place for us. Then going through available dates, 24th July came up, which was perfect as it’s my dad’s birthday.” Read on as the bride shares her memories of the big day... 39

Ashley said all the nerves disappeared when he saw me coming down the stairs towards him. Me on the other hand, I was trying not to have a panic attack or fall down in my heels!

We saved old jars, which we cleaned up and decorated with purple and blue ribbon. They were filled with battery-powered tea lights and bottle lights. We also had wooden butterflies and hearts scattered on the tables with polaroid-style pictures of us on mini easels.

We had handmade purple and blue paper flowers for the tables, altar, bouquets and buttonholes. I didn’t want real flowers as I wanted something I could keep forever. They were spectacular. 40

We bought a chalkboard and decorated it with chalk pens before sticking the plans for each table to it. The place names were mini chalkboards to match. I love jigsaw puzzles and Ashley plays poker, so for wedding favours we gave guests wooden jigsaw-piece fridge magnets and wooden poker-chip keyrings. They were also perfectly in keeping with our rustic theme.

We were blown away by our moon gate, which Alison from Creative Collections pulled together last minute. We were originally planning on an outside ceremony so the flowers would have been on the pagoda, but when the weather forecast changed she adapted the design to suit.

REAL WEDDINGS

Our three-tier cake was decorated with edible flowers and butterflies. The bottom layer was Victoria sponge, the middle was gluten-free lemon drizzle and the top was chocolate.

The table names were different species of butterfly as they hold a special significance to us and we both love them.

Ashley and his groomsmen all wore the same blue three-piece suits by Ted Baker paired with lilac ties and pocket squares, which complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses.

I wore Fantasy by Stella York. I chose it as it showed off my back tattoo and I felt amazing wearing it. I accessorised with a fingertip veil with diamanté detailing. 41

I remember taking a moment over dinner to just sit and look around at everyone, there just for us. We both had the best day ever and it really is true what people say – it just flies by. Being with our friends and family, able to celebrate with no restrictions after the craziness of 2020 is something we’ll both treasure. I’d recommend factoring in more time than you think you’ll need for morning preparations, as the hours have a way of disappearing too fast. Also, make sure you eat and drink plenty of water, as you’ll be too busy chatting to grab the canapés.

Our DJ, Ben, was amazing and a hit with our guests. He gave us a free lighting upgrade to celebrate being one of his first weddings after restrictions were lifted, which was something we really appreciated and definitely helped to create a nightclub atmosphere in the undercroft. We lost count of the number of people who said ours was the best wedding they’d ever been to! We went back to Torquay for our mini-moon. We had a relaxing few nights away and are planning on a longer honeymoon in Las Vegas next year.

ho doesn’t remember with fondness the sheer joy of jumping up and down on a bed as a kid? That level of giddiness was experienced by the wedding industry with the return of beloved big days, so what better way to celebrate? Adding to the fun is model bride Imi’s look. She wears Eujenia from Rembo Styling’s Civic Collection – a short, more relaxed vibe, ideal for the intimate postCovid wedding. Make-up artist Gemma, gave her a natural look with a soft up do to complete the picture.

FLORAL PARADISE 15 showstopping and creative ways to feature flowers in your wedding

Ceremony arches and moon gates are growing in popularity, symbolising the home you’ll create together. Sula Bailie from Nice Bunch comments, “Billowing urns and abundant floral arches can heighten the sense of unity and provide a dramatic backdrop.”

Probably the first thing that springs to mind when we think of wedding flowers, and the most traditional. Your bouquet is a way to reflect your personality by choosing your favourite blooms and those that hold special meaning to you. Sula says, “Bouquets bring together the best that nature can offer with the couple’s chosen aesthetic.

If you’re tying the knot al fresco a showstopping arrangement designed to fit your palette, such as this beauty by Clifton Flowers, focuses the eye ensuring the two of you are the centre of attention as you exchange your vows.

Come on in Jenny Hopkin from Clifton Flowers says, “Add a floral wreath to a door to welcome your guests or hang decorated hearts on plain walls to add extra interest and colour in places you wouldn’t expect.”

Crowning glory With a whimsical feel flower crowns are the staple of bohemian weddings, with dried flower versions now making a splash. Alternatively, if your style is more traditional, ask your hair stylist to tuck a few blooms into your up do for a softer alternative to a hair accessory.

Neat petite Sula says, “Bud vases provide a simple, delicate solution to decorating a celebration’s many elements. They can often be used in the ceremony and the reception table afterwards.” For a rustic vibe jars or mini-crates filled with flowers are a super-cute way to go.

Be seated Let your theme guide you and add some floral fascination to your place names. Sula says, “We love it when people take the cuttings and posies home as a momento of their day.”

At a banqueting-style reception with long tables a floral runner laid down the centre makes a gorgeous alternative to traditional centrepieces, and means guests can be sociable. If you’re sitting at round tables however, you can still ensure unimpeded chit chat by opting for raised arrangements with clear bases.

Self-raising flower Decorating your big-day bake with blooms to match your arrangements ties it together nicely with the rest of your styling. Be sure to discuss with your florist though as some varieties won’t be suitable. Sula says, “While we grow and source our flowers chemicalfree it’s particularly important for the cake decorations not to include any contaminants.”

slice OF PARADISE

Let the al fresco Mediterranean rustic vibe of this local shoot transport you to sunnier climes this winter Images courtesy of James & Kerrie Photography

W

ith the rising popularity of outdoor ceremonies and receptions, shoot coordinator Holly Allman-Lopez of Ambience Venue Styling Bath and her team of wedding aficionados were keen to select a location that would prove the epitome of this trend, and Maunsel House fit the bill. The concept was Mediterranean rustic luxe. “We wanted to showcase another side to the English country wedding, beyond bunting and hay bails; creating a feeling of relaxed luxury and elegance alongside the effortless glamour of the Mediterranean,” Holly explains. To complement the stunning gardens at Maunsel, they chose a gentle base of white and warm neutrals, accented with dusky blue, olivehued greenery and pops of bolder lavender blues and violets to add depth. Holly continues, “We wanted every small detail and element of the shoot to evoke a sense of quality and luxury, which when combined offers an opulent, beautifully created look.”

“I’ve always loved lavender,” photographer and shoot coordinator Sarah Scorey tells us. “It exudes romance with its soft purple tones, supple qualities and delightful fragrance,” she continues. The Somerset Lavender Farm then was the perfect backdrop and inspiration for the elopement shoot she had in mind. With this style of wedding becoming increasingly popular due to the pandemic, it’s sure to lend you some food for thought. 63

CAKES

Oh, crumbs! T

We discover how to tie your theme into the big-day bake

he buzzword when it comes to a 2020s wedding is without doubt “personality.” Couples are seeking to reflect their characters in every inch of their wedding day, making it a unique experience for them and their guests, as well as an all-out celebration of their own special love. And rightly so! One aspect you can use to achieve this with aplomb is your cake. In fact, today’s big-day bakes are works of art – showstopping centrepieces. You get to have a say on everything from the flavour to the topper, so have fun and go wild! We talked to the region’s experts to get you started on your journey to sweet success. Adorabella

A taste sensation

Personalisation doesn’t need to be purely aesthetic, it can be in the eating too. Xaviera Boadella from Adorabella says, “Think your favourite desserts, pastries or even ice cream. Couples love my almond and cherry bakewell.” Chris from Cakes From The Soul too reminds us that flavour is paramount, but says, “You’ll never please everyone, so don’t try. You only need to please yourselves, it’s your day.”

“A cake doesn’t have to be round or square, there are a lot of options when it comes to shape and height, and don’t be afraid to mix and match.” – Chris Pitman, Cakes From The Soul

EXPERT’S TIP Chris says, “When you book your cake maker check if the design needs to be finalised on booking, or whether you’re just securing the date. Then ask about the cut-off date for deciding the final design.”

Adorabella “Colour is a great place to start, as you choose the palette to work throughout your whole wedding you can incorporate this in the main cake colour, flowers or smaller details.” – Xaviera, Adorabella 67

“Subtle references to your personal style and theme can include a section of abstract painted detail or a sprinkling of gold leaf. You could even have entire tiers in colours to coordinate with flowers, invitations, table settings and so on.” – Sarah McNally, Sarah McNally Cakes

Sarah McNally Cakes

Sarah McNally Cakes Adorabella

“You may have had a monogram designed for your stationery, which includes your initials, wedding date or even a meaningful quote. This can be added to the cake to enhance the design whether it be a subtle touch or main feature.” – Xaviera, Adorabella

“Here in the South West we’re spoilt for stunning venues. Perhaps there’s a colour and style that runs throughout yours and you fell in love with it so much you’d like the cake to mirror its beauty.” – Xaviera, Adorabella

Adorabella

Adorabella 68

“Oh the dress! Such an important element and one that can be incorporated into your cake design. The fabric and details can be recreated in sugar to adorn your cake with hand-piped brush embroidery, edible lace, pearl borders and more.” – Xaviera, Adorabella

“Gone are the days when cakes were all white fondant-covered creations with white pillars and the odd flower. Nowadays there’s such a variety of styles and mediums available, meaning there’s really no limit to the creative freedom you can have with your cake. Look for a cake maker who reflects you own style and aligns with your other wedding suppliers,” – Sarah, Sarah McNally Cakes

www.rubywalkerphotography.com for Sarah McNally Cakes

TOPPER TIP Kerry says, “Ask your cake maker to provide your cake topper on a dummy top tier, this way it won’t be damaged as it’s removed from the cake and you can keep it indefinitely on a shelf away from direct sunlight.”

CAKES

Bring on the fun

The list of personal touches you can add to your big-day bake to give it a touch of you is endless. Kerry Hemms from Angel’s Kitchen says, “Some of the things I’ve been asked to feature include the groom wearing a Stormtrooper helmet, a Wonder Woman belt and lasso on a bride, pet cats hidden all over and a 3D light-up Iron Man.” You may just want something completely different, and after all it’s your wedding. So, as Kerry says, “If you want a giant three-tier fondant fancy instead of a traditional wedding cake, then there’s no reason why you shouldn’t!” As well as sugarcraft creations, cake toppers too can be added as a personal touch. “Whether it’s a pet, walking boots, books, the happy couple or even a Snorlax bride and groom! The sky’s the limit,” Xaviera from Adorabella tells us. You could even get your family involved. The pictured Pooh Bear cake was designed by the bride’s younger sister, Winnie-the-Pooh being a favourite childhood character, and was hand-painted by cake maker Sarah Churchill of Sarah’s Sugarcraft. The blue roses matched the wedding’s palette and the couple’s names were embossed and painted on it too. Don’t worry though, it’s still possible to keep the fun elements super-classy! Sarah from Sarah McNally Cakes explains, “I’ve had couples include sweet details such as tiny golden dinosaurs on their cake, keeping the whole aesthetic very elegant while still giving the cake that personal twist.”

Angel’s Kitchen

Angel’s Kitchen Angel’s Kitchen This vision in blue by Sarah’s Sugarcraft boasts a hand-painted plaque featuring the bride and groom. Meanwhile, the blue and sparkle tier was inspired by the bride’s dress and colour scheme. The wafer flower is an edible recreation of the blooms in the bouquet, which is of course, the bride’s favourite.

The story of us

“Why not go all out and tell your story on your cake?” says Kerry of Angel’s Kitchen. “Think about where you met, where you live, your first date and even honeymoon location,” she advises. Chris at Cakes From The Soul offers further food for thought: “What makes you so compatible, the perfect couple? Perhaps it’s a song, a film, a place or a hobby. Incorporate this into you cake to reflect what it is that makes you, you.” You can also choose to include part of your story, but only on the back of your cake, so that from the front your guests will see a traditional wedding cake. “The hidden part will then be revealed later on in the proceedings,” Kerry explains.

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

READY, SET, POSE!

72

www.chrisblackledg ephotography.co.uk

Dave and I were unsure if we wanted to book a pre-wedding shoot as we don’t like our picture being taken and can be quite awkward in front of the camera. I spoke to a few of our married friends and they all recommended booking a shoot, so we decided to go for it. As we got engaged during the last lockdown, we had only met our photographer once over Skype, so we felt the shoot would also be a good way of getting to know him better ready for our big day. We’d arranged to meet on a beach in Kent, and as I’m sure you can tell from the pictures, it was extremely blustery and cold, so much so we were convinced we would appear blue

in the final shots! Although it wasn’t the perfect weather conditions, the combination of our windswept appearence – my hair must have looked like Medusa – onlookers and relaxed nature of our photographer made the shoot fun! I was very nervous beforehand, changing my outfit 10 times much to Dave’s annoyance, but once we were there we both felt at ease and had a great time. If you’re debating booking a shoot, I’d highly recommend it.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE Wedding planning has been pretty straightforward overall, but when it came to choosing my accessories, I felt very overwhelmed. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly girly, but I wanted something that would make me look beautiful on the day without being overpowering. After hours of shopping, I surprised myself by discovering I have a hidden love for pearls, so when I came across a pearl and floral hair clip, I just knew that I had to have it! I’m planning to finish my look with a pair of pearl earrings and a pendant necklace. My shoes have also been difficult. I’m 5ft 2ins and Dave is more than 6ft tall, so I was debating whether to wear heels to make the height difference less apparent. All the heels that I loved were really expensive and I was beginning to have nightmares about falling over as I walked down the aisle – I’m not the most gracious person even in flats! So, after looking at countless websites and going into what feels like every shoe shop in Essex, I finally decided to embrace my height and purchased a pair of glittery trainers with satin laces from Kate Spade. Although different to what I had orginally envisaged, I think the look suits my dress and it’s made me feel more relaxed knowing I won’t be going to A&E on the big day. Lastly, Dave and I went ring shopping – a traditonal wedding element we still wanted

for our nuptials. When we arrived at the jewellers, which was the same branch that Dave purchased my engagement ring from, I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had a matching wedding ring that I, of course, had to have. Luckily we are months ahead of our wedding, however we were made aware that some ring designs can take up to four months to arrive in the store – take note readers that are planning last-minute ‘I dos’! Dave never wears jewellery, so he was unsure of what style he wanted and all of the different types of metal and cuts were quite overwhelming for him. After doing some research and asking our friends for their opinions, he decided on a plain platinum band that looks great. Make sure you check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the perfect entertainment.

his year has flown by, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? It’s starting to dawn on me that this is my last as a Miss – eek – and July will creep around quickly so the countdown is officially on! My fiancé, Dave, and I have booked most of our suppliers including the venue, photographer and florist and I’ve even found my dress – but there’s still plenty to do! We’re getting really excited as the day draws closer, and the more I write about all of your beautiful weddings, the more real it seems that we will have our very own wedding day. In this issue, read all about our pre-wedding shoot and my search for the perfect accessories.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We’ve ordered wooden cutouts of our guests’ names to be used as place names. They look really cute and double up as favours.

Originally, we didn’t want light-up letters, but after seeing a set-up at one of our venue’s wedding shows, we loved the look and have hired them.

Dave and I have purchased an oak direction sign that will greet our guests as they enter our venue.

Although I was against the idea of wearing a veil, I tried one on with my dress and fell in love.

We came across a local company that creates personalised cake toppers, so we’ve decided to order one with figures of us and our cat.

Our venue offers guests a choice of ribbons when they enter the venue, pink if they want people to keep their distance, green if they’re comfortable to shake hands and blue if they are happy to hug. I think it’s a great way of making sure that everyone feels happy and safe on the day.

We’re planning to buy personalised cufflinks for Dave and his best man.

I love this buttonhole wrapped in twine and am going to ask our florist if she can do the same.

For our tables, we’re purchased concrete planters that are shaped like characters from our favourite films and tv shows to add a personal touch to the day. 73

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

DECK THE HALLS We’re really excited about our winter wedding and would love to incorporate the season into our venue styling. What would you suggest? Venue styling during the festive season is all about exciting the senses, so consider colour, ambient candlelight, interesting textures and scents. A festive colour scheme is a great way to channel the season. Whilst rich burgundy and forest green are obvious classics, other bold jewel tones, such as deep purple and navy also work beautifully. If strong colours aren’t your style however, a more subtle, sparkling theme might be the better option. A palette of natural hues or even all white, set against a dazzling mix of metallics can look breathtaking, creating a sparkling, winter-wonderland feel that’s elegant and timeless. Nature also offers up an abundance of styling inspiration at this time of year. Seasonal greenery, such as evergreen pine, fir branches or holly look amazing incorporated into mantelpiece and staircase displays, or as table garlands. However, be sure to steer clear of mistletoe for table décor as it’s poisonous! Pinecones and nuts add beautiful texture when nestled amongst a carefully curated tablescape. As for place settings – cinnamon sticks, star anise or dried fruit slices not only look striking, they add a gorgeous scent too. Don’t forget the candlelight! Embrace the darker evenings with flickering candles (we love to use a mixture of pillar and floating candles) or a roaring open fire to welcome your guests in from the cold. Holly Allman-Lopez, www.ambiencevenuestyling.com

FLASH IN THE PAN

www.tonisimion.co.uk

We’re getting married in the winter and the only thing we’re worried about are the dark nights and generally low light at this time of year spoiling our photography. What would you advise? Check that your photographer has external flashes. I keep them with me for just such a situation, where the light is low at this time of year. Sometimes, using flashes can create wonderful photos, with beautiful light. I love shooting at night, because you have the option of creating something different. Toni Simion, www.tonisimion.co.uk

WHICH IS WHICH? Help! We’re getting confused about the difference between a registrar and a celebrant. Can you shed some light on this? Until recent times, couples could either book a religious ceremony in a church, or a secular one at a register office. The only other option was a licensed venue, which a registrar would attend. That’s not the case any more. Firstly, let’s examine what a registrar is and what they do. A registrar is an official who oversees and keeps records of births, deaths and marriages. They often work in a register office and officiate the paperwork/licence pertaining to your legal marriage. These are set words and procedures and are often rather impersonal. What many don’t realise is that you can go into a register office, sign the legal paperwork and then use a celebrant to write and deliver a ceremony to suit your personalities. So, what exactly is a celebrant? A professionally-trained celebrant will meet with you and discover exactly what your dream wedding would look like. They’ll include as much or as little as you wish of any element whether it be religious, spiritual or secular. If you’ve always dreamed of a woodland wedding, then that’s what they’ll design for you. If you fancy a themed wedding, maybe Star Wars or Disney, then the celebrant will enter into the spirit of your ceremony and make it a reality. Currently, a celebrant can’t do the legal paperwork, so organise a quick visit to the register office to complete this. Once it’s all signed, you can have your ring exchange, vows, readings, meaningful songs and everything your hearts desire – a wedding that you and your guests will remember for the rest of your lives. Julie Bisacre, www.celebrantjuliebisacre.com 75

CHRISTMAS ACTUALLY We’re both obsessed with Christmas and would love to include it in our ceremony somehow. What can you recommend? With a celebrant-led wedding you can make your ceremony as Christmassy as you like! Here are a few suggestions: ♥ Make an entrance and walk into the room to your favourite carol or cheesy festive track. Get your guests to sing along. ♥ Candles always add romance, so including a unity candle ceremony is the perfect way to keep that warm Christmas glow. ♥ Create your own blend of mulled wine as part of a wine ceremony. Add your favourites along with some spices and your guests will really enjoy toasting you both after the “I dos.” ♥ Instead of a sand ceremony, why not have a snow globe ceremony, each taking it in turns to add the elements? ♥ Let your guests leave a special thought or message to you both in a bauble and get them to hang it on the tree. ♥ Use hand-fasting cords in Christmas colours and add special festive charms. If you make the cords long enough, you can use them every year to decorate your tree. ♥ If you’re having your ceremony in your home or your family’s home, why not include a tree planting ceremony and plant a Christmas tree? ♥ Incorporate your favourite Christmas films into your vows. My favourites from Love Actually include: “To me, you are perfect, and my wasted heart will love you.” And: “I love you even when you’re sick and look disgusting!” – Now that’s true love and definitely a keeper. Jen Whitworth, www.jenthecelebrant.co.uk

AL FRESCO “I DOS” My fiancé and I have just started looking for our dream wedding venue, and we’d like to get married outside. What should we keep in mind before booking? If you’re thinking of an outside wedding, the first thing you’ll be worried about is the weather. What if it’s pouring with rain? Fear not, last minute change of plans can easily be accommodated. For example, we use our beautiful ceremony room in the Great Hall, which can seat up to 75. It also works the other way around! Earlier this year, we had a couple who were desperate to marry outside, but the weather didn’t look good. Finally, the sun came out 30 minutes before the ceremony and we decided to go for it. So, do check that your venue can be flexible. We have a great team of registrars here in Somerset and they’re always accommodating so that ceremonies are happy and informal occasions. If we’re outside, we generally put out a few seats for elderly and special guests, but most people are standing, which gives them a good view. Our brides can make the perfect entrance, through the gathered guests to join their spouse-to-be with the 16th-century manor house and gardens in the background. Welcome drinks can be served on the front lawn and celebrations can continue in our fabulous marquee... so, what’s there to stress about? John Blake, www.old-bridge.co.uk 76

SEASONAL CHEER We’re looking for some festive fun to add to our winter wedding day. What would you suggest? A great way to ensure your photo booth is in keeping with the festive theme is to ensure the company you use provides an array of Christmas props for you and your guests. From beards and turkey hats right through to wrapped parcels and mistletoe, these additional props will be sure to add a touch of festivity to your photos. Also, be sure there’s the option for a festive print template for the print outs on the night. This is the keepsake that everyone will get to take home and it’s your opportunity to make your mark. Beyond the photo booth, there are a few basics that never disappoint. Crackers – because it’s not a Christmas wedding without paper hats, bottle openers and a new mini screwdriver! Mulled wine – well, because not only is it going to keep everyone warm and a little tipsy, it’ll also fill the room with a festive aroma. And Christmas classics – although a little cheesy, everyone loves to be reminded that it’s the most wonderful time of the year! Craig Cheber, www.booth19.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

FABULOUSLY FLAWLESS I’ve worked hard to help my skin recover from months of lockdown, how do I ensure it all pays off with a flawless make-up look? Jane says: The first thing to do once you’re make-up-ready is choose a primer to smooth the skin and provide a long-lasting look. I recommend Oil Control from Smashbox. Next, opt for a satin-finish foundation, as this is best for achieving a sheer and luminous glow. Proceed with caution when contouring, as you’ll need the skin tone on your face to match the rest of your body. Select a sheer, blendable cream that’s subtle and flattering, and apply just below the cheekbones. For maximum colour density on the eyes and to prevent creasing, prime the lids with Eyeshadow Primer Potion by Urban Decay. And finally, prep the lips – I love Lipcuff by Body Shop. Use a lip balm regularly to prevent those dry flakey patches and your pout will be pucker-ready for the big day!

FASHION FORWARD I want to look on-trend on my big day. What’s fashionable at the moment, and are there any designers I should look out for?

SPARKLE AND SHINE What styles and fabrics would you suggest for a January wedding? Debbie says: Winter weddings usually mean more options. Often, a summer bride is concerned about being too hot, especially in the princess-style dresses, so they might feel more comfortable in a lightweight chiffon or crepe. Winter brides don’t have to worry about this though, as your dress can provide lots of layers for insulation. A perfect dress would be Nellie by Stella York. She’ll keep you warm and has all the sparkle you could ever wish for. The light in winter can sometimes be a bit dim, but a dress with shimmer and dazzle will catch the light. You’ll be indoors quite a bit with candles and romantic lighting, so a sparkly ballgown is perfect. A luxurious satin fabric too will just glow with that more subdued lighting, something like Hepburn by Pronovias. This also has the added bonus of sleeves, which hides the goosebumps if you’re outside! There’s also a hint of bling on the neckline – just beautiful!

Sarah says: Fashion-minded brides should look out for bell sleeves – especially on floaty boho gowns. Look at the designer Lilian West, her boho dresses are fabulous and right on point. Fashion trends are moving towards modern twists on the classic gown. A-line silhouettes with eye-catching bodices are definitely in fashion, as are variants on the typical necklines, such as a scoop, square or halter. A-line gowns rich in beautiful Mikado fabric featuring pockets are becoming increasingly popular too. All brides seem to want a pocket at the moment, so why not join in? Backs are back! Look out for daring back details on an otherwise incredibly simple dress. Speaking of which, simplicity is making its own breakthrough. There are lots of stunning examples with no embellishment on them and they really rock. Check out Paloma Blanca for some inspiration.

LIGHT AND SHADE

A new addition to the Lush range of perfumes, Shade offers a burst of warmth with comforting sandalwood. A fragrance with a conscience, each essential oil has its own story to tell including sandalwood from West Timor, which is extracted from protected and sustainable trees. It’s also made using a new source of olibanum oil from the Dayaxa region in Somaliland. It has full traceability down to the harvester level, with every step of the process being mapped on blockchain. In fact, Lush is working with its supplier to kickstart a project to train local women in small-scale olibanum oil distillation, a first in the community. Find it online at www.lush.com, where it’s priced at £25 for 30ml.

FEEL FLAWLESS

Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!

NATURE’S HARVEST

When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk

The Detangling Mist is the newest product in The Hair Boss’ award-winning range. The brand, founded by Lisa Shepherd, former British Hairdresser of the Year, simplifies hair care into a four-step routine, and this newbie fits tidily into part three. With life getting busier by the second, this is the quick, on-the-go answer to dry, unruly hair. Targeted to fix frizzy and damaged locks, it’s designed to smooth and strengthen, while protecting your hair and preventing breakage. Lisa says, “In between washes, The Detangling Mist will soften the hair, taming any unruly knots and re-adding the shine that it’s lost since the last wash.” Priced at £8.99, it’s available at https://thehairboss.co.uk
