Hello lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding! With spring approaching, we’re excited to embrace this season and see what couples have up their sleeves. The weather can be unpredictable this time of year, so it’s always essential to devise a wet-weather plan to relax, knowing you’ve covered all your bases in the run-up to your wedding – especially for those opting for al fresco celebrations. The seasonal availability for flowers offers an excellent choice for the time of year; think daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, crocus, Lily of the Valley, Iris and more blooms. It’s an excellent opportunity to embrace a colourful and bold colour scheme using nature’s palette. Who doesn’t like abundant flowers from bouquets, gorgeous arrangements and installations? Remember, you can move your florals throughout the day to ensure a picture-perfect backdrop for the vows, wedding breakfast and reception while staying on budget. Floral arches are my personal favourite! Expect Pantone’s colour of the year, Peach Fuzz, to grace the wedding industry. The compassionate and nurturing soft peach shade conveying a heartfelt kindness will surely become a huge movement that we’re so excited to see. Another popular trend making a statement is Champagne towers that add a touch of fun and class to weddings while serving guests a glass of bubbly. If you’re at the start of your planning journey, you’ve come to the right place because we cover everything from fashion, beauty, cakes, venues and more. When searching for a property, I advise seeing if any of your shortlisted venues are hosting wedding shows, as spring is a popular time for these events. It allows you to look around the spaces, meet local suppliers, discuss your big day and ask plenty of questions. For those creeping closer to your special day, we have plenty of last-minute tips and tricks to ensure a stress-free wedding and the perfect finishing touches for that extra wow factor. So, no matter where you’re at with wedding planning, there’s something for everyone. That’s all from me, happy planning!

FEELING PEACHY Pantone, the global colour authority and provider of professional colour language standards and digital solutions for the design community, has introduced the colour of the year that’s sure to impact 2024 weddings PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz! The velvety gentle peach’s embracing spirit enriches mind, body and soul. At a time of turmoil in many aspects of life, the need for nurturing, empathy and compassion grows ever stronger as does imaginings of a more peaceful future. The warm and cosy shade highlights desire for togetherness with others and the feeling of sanctuary this creates. It adds a feeling of tenderness communicating a message of caring and sharing, community and collaboration. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone Color Institute says. “A cosy peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz brings belonging, inspires recalibration and an opportunity for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, heal and to flourish from whether spending time with others or taking the time me to enjoy a moment by ourselves. Sensitive but sweet and airy, the colour of the year evokes a new modernity. While centred in the human experience of enriching and nurturing the mind body and soul, it is also a quietly sophisticated and contemporary peach with depth whose gentle lightness is understated but impactful bringing beauty to the digital world. Poetic and romantic, a clean peach tone with a vintage vibe, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz reflects the past yet has been rephrased to have a contemporary ambiance.

Smaller guest lists, informal dress codes and no speeches are among the top wedding trends for 2024 according to a recent survey commissioned by high street jewellers F.Hinds. Two thousand couples were also asked for their thoughts on which wedding traditions are still important, and the results are in. Big-day traditions that remain in favour include the bride being walked down the aisle (53 per cent), having wedding rings (52 per cent), cutting the cake (49 per cent) and having a best man (44 per cent). In contrast, wearing a garter (nine per cent), being carried over the threshold (eight per cent), and interestingly, sticking to a colour palette (eight per cent) are loosing momentum among UK nearlyweds. Looking at new trends for 2024, intimate wedding ceremonies (29 per cent) and receptions (24 per cent) are in, as are informal dress codes (22 per cent). Alongside guest numbers have being significantly reduced, the classic sit-down three-course wedding breakfast could become extinct with couples favouring more informal food options such

The Three Horseshoes in Letchmore Heath, the newest pub to be taken on by the award-winning Peach Pub company, has launched a new menu for 2024 to start the year with a bang! Step inside the pretty, half-timbered inn and find a warm welcome from the experienced team who, between them, will make every trip to the pub memorable. Everyone is welcome, including four-legged friends. It’s the perfect setting for pre-wedding date nights or gettogethers with loved ones. Sip on well-made cocktails like a delightfully different Limoncello Spritz or a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, an English sparkling wine from Sussex, while perusing the new seasonal menu and deciding what to eat. The menu is full of fresh, honest food from classic gastropub favourites to modern, healthy dishes and weekend treat specials from the head chef. The pub is also serious about Sunday roasts, serving up at least three delectable choices every week. Everything is made with quality ingredients with provenance from suppliers more used to supplying Michelin-starred restaurants than village pubs with Aubrey Allen British beef and free-range Jimmy Butler Blythborough pork as well as Cornish lamb, native fish and seafood. Ensure to leave room for pudding as the baked Basque cheesecake with white chocolate and poached rhubarb and the cherry and Chantilly cream choux bun and hot chocolate sauce are just two of the superb, sweet dishes currently available. REAL WEDDINGS

T

hese lovebirds met at ASOS in 2017, a few months after Chloe had started at the company. Two of her friends spotted Jack, who had just completed his induction, and they knew he would be her type! Chloe says, “It wasn’t long before they acted as our dating gurus, and we shortly exchanged numbers. A week later, Jack organised a brilliant date night at Cote in St Albans, and it was clear after our first date we were attracted to one another. We had lots in common with the same life values.” Jack got down on one knee at the top of The Shard, where he popped the question during a magical nightb out. “I don’t think he expected it to be that busy, and I noticed his nerves leading up to the moment”, says Chloe. She continues, “It was a total surprise, and I couldn’t believe he bought my dream ring – I just remember bursting into happy tears! He arranged for my sister and her partner to be part of the day, who captured the moment to treasure. Shortly after, we went to Madison in London for a celebratory meal before getting a limo ride back to his parents, where our families were waiting for an organised celebration. Jack had also secretly spoken to my boss and booked me a week off work, whisking me to the New Forrest for a week-long celebration in our private woodland cabin. On our way home, we stopped off via his nanna’s, where we were able to tell her directly our news – she was absolutely thrilled for us both!”

SETTING THE SCENE As the couple became engaged on July 17th 2021, they decided to get married exactly two years later! Their number one goal was to ensure they had a day full of fun, laughter and happiness surrounded by the people they loved. So, the couple had a cocktail bar, a jazzy entrance to the wedding breakfast, a photo booth, foam lights for the evening boogie and ensured the dancefloor was never empty. Looking back today, they genuinely wouldn't have changed a thing. A couple of years into the relationship before Jack proposed, Chloe knew she would tie the knot at Micklefield Hall after seeing the property on Instagram. She loved how couples could get married outside at the venue's gorgeous little temple in front of a stunning pond – it looked perfect! Shortly after the proposal, the couple visited the property and were blown away! The bride says, "Not only was the venue as stunning as we'd both hoped, but the owners and staff were lovely. Anna, Jamie and Abbie, the wedding coordinator, were so helpful from start to finish. On the day, Abbie worked her socks off to ensure everything went without a hitch and was born for this role. The couple wanted to ensure everyone was comfortable at the wedding breakfast, so they arranged the tables by couples and friendship groups. Andrew Flemming created gorgeous arrangements for all tables and centrepieces. For the bridal bouquet, Chloe chose the sunset colours to match the colour scheme, the bridesmaids' orange dresses and bouquets full of white roses and the groomsmen's ties. The venue's beautiful chandeliers were decorated by Andrew using beautiful white wisteria. To ensure everyone had a little treat to enjoy, the couple decided to get creative and personalise some iced biscuits with 'Mr and Mrs Shipton' alongside the wedding date. They also provided all the guests with limoncello/tequila rose shots for the final wedding breakfast toast. The newlyweds used Micklefield Hall’s recommended suppliers and went with a company called Kalm Kitchen for the catering. Their food throughout the day was absolutely delicious, and all the guests 29

thoroughly enjoyed the variety offered. It’s safe to say no one went hungry! The team served canapés for the drinks reception, followed by a lovely three-course meal for the wedding breakfast and late-night munchies to see everyone through the evening. Micklefiled Hall’s recommended supplier, Maxine, created the beautiful wedding cake. The lovebirds went for a tasting session and were blown away by each cake's flavours, styles and dedication. They opted for lemon, carrot and raspberry in the end.

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART The bride wore a beautiful A-line wedding dress from What Alice Wore Bridal with white April leaf appliqués. She says, “After visiting the store, we met Rachel, who was super helpful with her expert knowledge. She listened to where I wanted my dress to accentuate some body parts and where I wanted it to work its magic by hiding certain areas. I think it was clear early on the design I wanted, as I must have picked out all the same leaf patterns, just different necklines. I found the perfect gown after trying on a mixture of dresses and Rachel recommended a satin edge veil to show off the beautiful pattern in my dress. I couldn’t believe how glamorous I looked! I don’t tend to get my make-up done professionally, But my beauty team brought my whole look together. It was a special moment when my mum was helping me get ready.” Jack wore a three-piece suit from HRH Holmes in Hitchin. Its main colour was navy, with a checked burnt orange pattern to match the colour scheme. He styled it with brown leather brogues and a burnt orange tie. Jack, his two best men and six groomsmen all wore matching suits. However, Jack had an orange buttonhole to stand out. The aisle at Micklefield is quite long, so Jack turned his back when the music started. He waited until the bride was at the top of the stairs, and then one of his best men gave him the nudge to turn around. Jack said he was more nervous than ever, but turning around to see his bride filled him with joy. Chloe says, “I was nervous and focused on not walking too quickly! When he turned around and I saw his cheeky smile, everything slotted into place and my nerves disappeared.” On the couple's wedding invitations, the lovebirds asked guests to dress smart but summery, as they wanted bright and bold colours while ensuring guests felt comfortable.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple loved seeing everyone enjoying themselves, mingling and catching up! A DJ entertained guests all night, and a photo booth was a huge hit with all. After the wedding, the couple loved going through the USB to see all the photos taken. POP Party Hire provided ‘LOVE’ light-up letters to add a special touch to the dancefloor. The wedding was full of memorable moments from start to finish! Chloe says, “While I was getting ready, the nerves set in. We continued the tradition by parting ways the night before and not speaking until the ceremony. It was so difficult because we always have each other as our go-to person when we feel nervous about anything. What relaxed me was when one of Jack’s best men brought me across a wedding gift and card on behalf of Jack. His gorgeous words helped me to relax and from that moment onwards, I was so excited to see him! “The whole day could not have gone any better if we tried, and we’ve both said we’d love to do it all again. One part that stood out the most was two of my bridesmaids (Eloise and Natalie) doing a speech for us. Shortly after they began talking, brown envelopes were handed around, and it was safe to say I had a slight panic about what it could contain. But it was, in fact, a lyric sheet. They sang their way through the remaining speech, singing lyrics they wrote themselves and getting our guests up and joining in – it was truly incredible and blew us all away!” The Micklefield Hall team, who were terrific and ensured everything went perfectly, made the day go so smoothly. The pair honestly couldn’t recommend the venue enough, as they wemt above and 31

beyond. They’ve even invited the pair back for an afternoon tea on their first wedding anniversary!

HONEYMOON The following day, Jack surprised Chloe with a stay at The Grove. She comments, “We had such a lovely relaxing time, where we could fully take in the wonderful day we’d just had 24 hours prior. We used their spa, and both had such wonderful massages – it was the perfect way to relax! We jetted off to Rhodes shortly after our wedding, as one of my bridesmaids was also getting married! We used this opportunity to have a little mini-moon and will be looking to have our honeymoon this year.”

True love

Offley Place provided a dreamworthy setting for Indula and James’s wedding Images courtesy of Shrigley Photography & Films

T

hese lovebirds initially met while working together on a ward at a local NHS hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic. They started dating as restrictions subsided and restaurants opened again. They were both attracted to the fact they were hard-working and intelligent while also being caring and compassionate in their work. James proposed to Indula in December 2022. He pretended they were staying in London with family as a pre-Christmas get-together. He had booked a beautiful hotel room directly overlooking the Tower of London and London Bridge. When they got to the room, there were hundreds of rose petals and an aisle of tealights leading towards the beautiful view, where James got down on one knee and popped the question. It was a huge surprise as Indula was sure with it getting so close to Christmas, a proposal wouldn’t be until 2023! Here, the bride shares details about their special day... 41

Offley Place’s beautiful and light conservatory for our ceremony stood out because of the large windows and brickwork, giving the room a unique feel. It also had a large reception ballroom, perfect for hosting our traditional ceremony in the morning and reception in the evening. The space featured stunning chandeliers and a ceiling layout.

Mini Sri Lanka cakes were given to guests as favours for a traditional touch.

Our beautiful centrepieces created by Gayatri Weddings & Events included stunning florals. We had a simple but elegant three-tiered cake that matched our colour scheme.

We opted for blue, green and white florals for the bouquets, buttonholes and aisle décor.

Ruby’s catered a tasty Sri Lankan menu for the whole day. 42

I wore a stunning gown designed by Stella York featuring a sweetheart neckline, strapless design and an A-line silhouette. I always wanted a simple design and material for a classy, elegant look. The dress came with a cute belt and a slit, which added a bit of jazz to the look! My traditional ceremony saree was bought in Sri Lanka, and for this look, I went for a more embellished saree to stand out from my simpler dress.

James wore a custom-made royal blue suit that was purchased from Anthony Formal Wear. He wanted a look that stood out from the groomsmen.

My bridesmaids wore dusty blue coloured sarees for the traditional ceremony and then changed to a similar colour for the rest of the wedding day.

REAL WEDDINGS

It was a real pinchme moment after getting ready! I had tried the dress and saree on a few times beforehand for measurement purposes, but on the day with hair and make-up all done, it was such an emotional and happy moment that made the whole day seem much more real!

The first time I saw James was while I was walking down the aisle at our traditional ceremony – it was a wonderful moment with a rush of many emotions. It made me feel happy and excited all in one; many of my nerves melted away.

We had a DJ for our evening reception, which was a big hit! The supplier played various songs to ensure there was something for everyone! 43

All the vendors made the day extra special, ensuring everything ran on time and smoothly.

We had a mini-moon to Florence and Pisa in Italy after the wedding for six days – it was terrific! We enjoyed walking, exploring, eating great food and enjoying the culture. A highlight was watching the sun set over Florence from the Piazzale Michelangelo.

We both felt a combination of nervousness, excitement and happiness that the day was finally here. A lot went into planning the year before, and there was a lot of anticipation for the day. We mostly looked forward to seeing each other and having the best day.

My brother being able to make it even for part of the day was extraspecial as he has severe autism and learning difficulties, so the fact that he could be there was special for us both.

The ceremonies, in particular the traditional ceremony, stood out the most to us! The amazing dancers in our procession were a very memorable moment. Our vows to each other in the civil ceremony stood out too.

The speeches were incredible! My bridesmaids, dad, James’s twin Nick and his own speech were all amazing, emotional and funny.

Sentimental TOUCHES

This stunning shoot showcased the stunning bridal jewellery from the talented Sarah Heulwen Lewis Images courtesy of Trish Henderson Photography

S

arah Heulwen Lewis at Heulwen Lewis Bespoke has been working on a rebrand over the last year, wanting to show how bespoke pieces are both sentimental and high-end, from remodelling jewellery to new bridal pieces. During this time, she has created a new concept for wedding jewellery that has been on her mind for a while – it needed to come alive! She comments, “I’ve always wanted to capture the story and memories of a bride’s wedding day. It starts with the dress, but why should that end once they have walked down the aisle? I wanted their memories from their day to walk with them every day, to be passed on for future generations and worn with pride. The shoot was to help tell the story and show small details can make all the difference in making your day and gown truly yours. “A wedding is as much a nod to the past as it is about the future; this is the idea behind my latest bridal buttons collection in collaboration with wedding dress designer Lisa Lyons. No one gets to wear their wedding dress twice. But what if you could create wearable, bespoke heirlooms from the buttons that detail your dream gown? Using the style of your dress or significant motifs, I’ll create buttons that capture the memory of your big day, which you can then wear and pass on to future generations. Even if your gown doesn’t have buttons, this custom-made keepsake can be stitched and hidden into your dress. From designing your buttons and wearing them as part of your big day to cherishing them and eventually passing them down to loved ones, these bridal buttons are designed to be personal keepsakes that might walk down the aisle again in years to come.

THE LONDON PIE AND MASH COMPANY The London Pie and Mash Company was established in 2014, and the team are looking forward to celebrating 10 years within the catering industry – quite an achievement in this day and age! The key to its success has been adapting its offering to meet clients’ changing needs privately and publicly. As a business, the team has three core avenues of revenue: public events that include everything from Formula One at Silverstone to Glastonbury, where they cater 9,000 meals in 10 days! The second key service is the mail-order business, where the staff sends pie meals via courier throughout the country, a service which certainly came alive during the difficult Covid-19 pandemic. The biggest area of business is private catering, from corporate events and birthday parties to weddings. They have catered well over 1,000 private functions nationwide from 10 to 1,000 guests! The three business streams work in great harmony as many private bookings come from customers who have eaten the dishes at a public event, and the mail order allows customers to have a taster before they commit. The team used to just serve pie and mash only in the early days but

has expanded to offer a full range of canapés, starters, mains, desserts, buffets and late-night snacks through the wedding business specifically. They can provide staff, plates, cutlery, glassware and linen hire with a relaxed buffet to formal table service. There’s even a fully licenced mobile bar, Tinos, to offer a one-stop shop for clients offering savings and reducing risks. The company works with customers, helping them through the many potential pitfalls of event organising and management. Many people have yet to organise a large-scale event before, so it can be beneficial for the team to share many years of experience with real practical advice. With well over 20,000 followers on social media, they’re one of the most followed caterers in the UK. Managing director Olac Coombs says, “In a world where everyone has an opinion, we always need to be on top of our game and never take our history or future customers for granted. Every job is ultra-important, big or small, and we always strive for continuous improvement by listening to what people want and need now and in the future.” Discover: www.londonpieandmashcompany.co.uk

WOODY’S FIRED PIZZA In June 2019, Laura Silverdale followed her dreams and purchased her first wood-fired pizza oven. She loved making great-tasting artisan pizzas that showed a love for simple, high-quality ingredients. After a super successful first six months, she purchased a vintage converted horsebox called Woody to delight customers at parties, weddings and events around Hertfordshire and south Bedfordshire. The team’s wedding packages are extremely flexible. Cheesy garlic pizzas and four other Neapolitan pizzas can be chosen for occasions cooked freshly in front of guests for them to enjoy. The staff also offer 50

antipasti grazing boards, a great accompaniment to the pizzas. Guests can help themselves with artisan cheeses, pickles, dips, charcuterie, fresh fruits, crackers and crudites. There are even salads and dessert pizzas as optional extras! The company offers pizzas buffet style as the main event or evening food, where loved ones can help themselves to as much as they can manage. The team can also cater to vegan, gluten-free and Jain guests. Get in touch with Laura for a chat and quote! Discover: www.woodysfiredpizza.co.uk

Other popular options...

CATERING

RAISE A TOAST Outdoor mobile bars are proving to be a popular addition to weddings, especially outdoor nuptials during the summer months. With many different styles available, you’re sure to find a bar that matches the wedding theme and serves your favourite drink options. You could even create a personalised cocktail to give your day a personal touch.

DOUGHNUT WALLS There’s a reason doughnut walls have been so popular at weddings over the last few years. The wall not only looks great, but adults and kids alike will go crazy for the tasty treat. Another popular option is a prosecco wall, which we’re totally here for!

WEDDING FAVOURS With many options available for favours, picking one can be a difficult choice. We’ve found that some of the most popular options incorporate treats, including personalised love heart sweets, biscuits, chocolate or perhaps mini bottles of your favourite tipple.

ICE CREAMS Perfect for summer weddings, ice creams are a great alternative to traditional desserts with various flavours and toppings – it’s also great at cooling guests down. Add an element of fun to your wedding with a sweet cart featuring some of your favourite treats. The cart is perfect for those with a sweet tooth and will provide snacks throughout the reception!

GRAZING PLATTER One trend that has really kicked off over the last year is a grazing platter with artisan cheeses, meats, nuts, fruits, crackers, breads and more. This option will be popular with loved ones and is a great way to encourage interaction between guests. 51

Q&A

Look the best version of you with our expert advice    FAKE THE GLOW

www.gettyimages.co.uk

How can I achieve that glowing make-up look that’s so popular for brides? If you love the look of a dewy skin finish and are ready to bring the glow back for spring, I’m here to help you achieve this beautiful look regardless of your skin type worries! Creating luminous make-up can be difficult for many reasons; you want to glow and not shine. But sometimes, the body will do what it wants. If you suffer from an oily complexion, you might find yourself shying away from this type of make-up finish for fear of looking like you’ve run a marathon, as opposed to how you imagine a red carpet moment might look. However, there’s a way to achieve a luminous finish with the safety of a matte base. Try applying a skin mattifying setting spray after your skincare, followed by a matte foundation. Yep, you read right; I said matte because you can then apply some cleverly placed highlighter to give the illusion of a dewy and luminous complexion. Ensure you sweep your highlighter over all your high points, including the top of your cheekbones, brow bones, the bridge and tip of your nose and a dash along the cupid’s bow. Remember to keep it subtle; you don’t want to blind your guests with the reflection! Complete the look with a spritz of a long-lasting setting spray, and your make-up will be perfectly glowing. Sabina Ventriglia | Sabina Makeup Artist www.sabinaventriglia.co.uk

A PASSION FOR FASHION I’m looking for an elegant dress that’s easy to dance the night away in. What would you suggest? The quickest and easiest option is to buy a separate reception look that’s effectively a bridal-themed evening dress with a tad more lace or sequins, typically in white or ivory. Suppose you’re willing to consider a unique style that does not necessarily complement your wedding dress. In that case, there’s an enormous range of options online in the £100 to £600 bracket, depending on quality and level of sophistication. You still have to choose the appropriate styling, silhouette, neckline and address whether it should have straps or sleeves. Such readily available reception dresses are presented in standard sizes and are not custom-made. If that’s something you’re after to suit your bodily dimensions, style preferences precisely and complement your main bridal gown, things become more involved. At this juncture, it makes sense to work with your chosen gown supplier or, if funds permit, seek the services of a boutique designer who can help you arrive at the perfectly reception dress design. The final option is to simply ensure that your main dress is designed with a detachable train or sleeves. It’s not uncommon to even seek an entirely detachable skirt, which reveals a much lighter yet matching free-flowing option below. Whatever you decide, remember to consider the ambient climate and building arrangements to ensure convenience and comfort. Above all – have a blast. Inna Voronova | Inna Voronova Bridal https://inna-voronova.co.uk 64

BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL I don’t wear a lot of make-up normally. How do I create a perfect big-day look while still feeling like me? A good skincare routine is vital to getting that natural, fresh look without feeling too cakey. A lighter foundation will give you a more dewy look; my favourite is Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturising Foundation. Use just a few dabs of concealer under the eye area and where else it is needed on the face before blending with a slightly damp sponge to achieve that flawless, more natural look. If you’re prone to becoming oily through the day, use the Translucent Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier over your T-zone area, then a bronzer on the cheekbones and a little blusher. On the eyes, bronze and brown shades will always give a more natural effect. A powder eyeliner in black or dark brown blended into the eyeshadow will give that natural effect, especially paired with three-quarter lashes or individuals. Brush your brows and slightly use an eyebrow pencil to fill sparse areas if needed. Finish with a fine powder highlighter on the high points of your face, including your cheekbones, cupids bow and on the bridge of your nose. Always opt for a shade close to your natural colour with a matching lip liner for the lips. Nikki Smith | Sheer Perfection Beauty www.sheerperfectionbeauty.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

www.scotthammondphotography.co.uk

FINDING THE ONE

What questions should we ask our photographer before booking? I’ve always believed there are two questions to ask before booking a photographer. Firstly, does the photographer’s style fit what we’re looking for? This speaks for itself, as photography as an art is subjective, and ultimately, the first thing a couple will be attracted to is what they see. Check what packages they offer, if any, to fit your budget. Money is always a taboo subject, but it’s an important one to have in the world we live in today. As long as you strike a great balance between getting what you want and paying for quality, this should be an essential part of the decision-making process. PLANNING SOS We’ve just started wedding planning, and I’m slightly confused about what a celebrant does! Can you help? In a registrar-conducted civil wedding ceremony, you won’t have any say over important elements of the wording. For instance, you might not be religious but a family member would like a prayer included, which isn’t permitted in a council-conducted wedding ceremony. Or perhaps you wanted to include elements of two religions you follow. In addition to this, offices in town halls aren’t always to everyone’s tastes, so many people choose a venue of their own. Booking a council registrar to the chosen venue can seriously limit the dates or times you had in mind. RAINY DAYS

www.carolineacasterphotography.co.uk

We’re getting married in a marquee. How do we prepare for this and ensure we still get gorgeous images? There’s no need to worry about a bit of rain on your wedding day; it’s considered good luck and forces your guests to mingle together. Come the evening, the dancefloor would be filled, creating an authentic party atmosphere. That said, I would suggest a few things if the forecast was looking a little soggy. •Umbrellas and wellies: Inject fun into your bridal party shots with colourful wellies to match your wedding theme and clear brollies to keep all important hair and make-up perfect all day. You can even dress your umbrella dome with flowers and foliage to match your bridal bouquets. •Golden hour couple shots: After the rain comes a beautiful sunset! Plan time in your day to capture a couple of shots with your photographer during golden hour – I promise you won’t regret it! • Embrace and enjoy: You can’t control the weather, so embrace and enjoy every minute of your special day. If you’re feeling brave, dance in the rain together. It will make for some truly romantic images, and you’ll feel so high on life after! STYLED TO PERFECTION We’ve just got engaged and are considering different options for our wedding; what should we keep in mind when it comes to venue styling? Small details can make a big difference if you opt for an intimate wedding; think about elements that matter to you and your partner. As you work with a smaller guestlist, your budget can stretch further when planning your décor. Create a feeling of luxe intimacy by layering your tablescapes with beautiful tablecloths, charger plates and textured napkins. Finish with lots of candlelight for warmth and a softening of the atmosphere. Smaller guest numbers can often get lost in spacious venues, so consider making rooms seem smaller and cosier by adding drapes and ceiling installations. Beautiful hand-lettered place names and menus can be bespoke to each person, which will increase the guest experience. Work with the existing elements and surroundings where the wedding will take place. Create lounge areas under statement trees and use the branches as a base for flowers or drapes. Think about the lighting and use this as a feature; string festoon lights over guests’ heads to create a wedding zone and encourage them not to wander too far. Avoid naked flames and keep candles contained to stop them from blowing out. Outdoor ceremonies are magical and unique; I suggest creating a focal point with which to stand in front to frame you as a couple and differentiate you from the background in your photos. Create focal points and installations for a grand wedding. Think about ceiling installations and enhanced table plans to create wow moments as guests enter a room. Grand weddings often occur within large rooms or structures, and a ceiling installation can make a room seem more intimate and separate the space into dining, lounging and dancing. Upspecing the tablecloths and napkins can be a cost-effective way to have an impactful injection of colour and make the setting feel more luxe. Consider adding height to the tables to make the most of the vertical space; this could be through a mix of high and low florals or tapered candles in candlesticks. VENUE STYLING

DREAMY DÉCOR Discover the latest styling trends

f you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. To help you create the wedding of your dreams, we’ve put together our top tips on how to style three on-trend themes…

Sustainability

We all love the confetti shot, but make sure the version you’re purchasing is biodegradable. If you’re still worried about the environmental impact, consider using bubbles instead.

To help reduce your carbon footprint, ask your guests to carpool, use public transport or arrange for a bus to transport everyone.

We’ve seen a rise in the popularity of dried flowers in the last few months and are expecting this to continue in 2024. It’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of incorporating a pop of colour into your day.

If you’ve ordered lots of food but are worried about there being any waste, contact a local charity and arrange for any leftovers to be given to those in need. It’s also worth talking to your caterer and seeing if they use sustainable materials.

Favours can often be left behind at the end of the night or chucked away after the wedding, so why not donate money to a charity of your choice or gift your guests a plant or seeds that can help the environment? This can be a fun family activity if you have children attending the wedding.

There are ways to create luxurious stationery using sustainable materials. Contact companies that work with eco-products and discuss ways to recycle the décor once the wedding is over.

With environmentally friendly weddings on the rise, we can expect to see more earthy, neutral colours. Look for items like terracotta pots, wooden plinths, and linen napkins. These hues look great teamed with gold and coral.

Sustainability is becoming more important in our daily lives and has slowly worked its way into the wedding industry. If you're unsure where to start, talk to trusted suppliers to figure out ways to help reduce your footprint. 71

Bright and bold

Neon signs are a fun and quirky touch that will definitely get your guests talking. These can be personalised to say your names or wedding date and look great as photo booth backdrops.

Metallics are just as popular as ever and tie in well with most colour schemes. Opt for metallic cutlery, stands for your centrepieces, charger plates and candle holders to add a luxurious feel to the day.

With the success of the recent Barbie film, we expect to see more pinkinspired weddings. This versatile hue can be added to your tables, flowers and even your attire.

Contrary to the more subtle weddings we’ve seen in the past few years, weddings are now full of lots of colours, textures and patterns. Don’t be afraid to go all out; if your venue has an impressive ceiling, why not make it a feature? Add hanging chandeliers, flowers, paper cranes or even disco balls. 72

This year, we’ve seen weddings full of bright and bold hues, and we expect this trend to continue into 2024.

Your theme can stretch past your décor; colourful wedding dresses and mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses are both on the rise. A bold gown is a great way to incorporate your personality into your day. If budget allows, consider a more traditional dress for the ceremony, and surprise your guests with a costume change later in the evening.

Providing your guests with lots of fun entertainment is a trend we expect to continue into 2024. With so much choice available, from axe throwing and bouncy castles to glitter bars and ice cream vans, there is something for everyone. Ask your chosen supplier if they can add some colour to their entertainment, such as themed props or balloons.

Grand floral displays are a great way of incorporating your chosen colour scheme and will make a real statement in your photographs.

Rustic romance

Earthy, rustic weddings have been popular throughout the last few years, and we don’t see this trend ending anytime soon.

VENUE STYLING

Consider hiring wooden tables to create a more rustic feel. Wooden cross-back chairs are a must, coupled with foliage laid on the tables and some wild, meadowstyle flowers.

When it comes to decorating your tables, the options are endless. Your tables should be a focal point, so consider adding flowers, candles, mason jars, table sashes, and metallic cutlery. This theme is all about creating a setting that is laid-back and effortless. Keep your flowers relaxed and try to avoid peonies or flowers that sit neatly in your bouquet; instead, go for blooms such as roses, hydrangeas, and lots of trailing foliage. Place your blooms in milk churns, barrels and rustic-looking vases.

Denim and leather jackets are popular accessories that we’ve seen a lot of at rustic weddings. These can be personalised with your new last name, pearls or embroidered flowers. Plus, they look wonderful in those all-important photographs.

For those of you thinking of an al fresco ceremony, look for bench seating or haybales; this is a great way to make the day feel more relaxed and rustic.

String lights are a must. These are extremely versatile and can be hung from trees, beams, the exterior of your venue or around the tables. Lanterns are also a must-have detail that can decorate almost anything.

A popular part of the rustic theme is minimalism. You don’t need to incorporate a huge amount of decoration to make an impact; instead, choose items that remind you of the outside and will tie in with a more laidback atmosphere. 73

WEDDING RINGS

How to choose the perfect wedding ring

J

ewellery expert Sach Kukadia from 7879 shares the differences between platinum, gold and white gold rings.

What is a platinum ring? Platinum is a naturally white metal that is both harder to find and more durable than gold. It’s used in a much purer form than white gold, which is why it’s also typically more expensive. The durability of platinum is one of the many reasons it’s a popular choice for wedding rings. This is based primarily on the common belief that it is entirely scratch-proof. While this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your ring will be completely free of blemishes throughout its lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a fantastic choice for sensitive skin. Unlike white gold, which is commonly plated with rhodium, the absence of these alloys in platinum jewellery means you can purchase it safely, knowing that there’s a low chance you’ll have a reaction. What is a 24-karat gold ring? The other option when considering metal wedding rings is, of course, 24-karat gold. It’s a soft metal, making it easier to scratch and dent than platinum. That being said, 24-karat gold is a beautiful metal that many couples choose for their wedding rings. It has a warm, golden hue that complements every skin tone, and its softness makes it easy to mould into any shape or style. As is the case with platinum, 24-karat gold is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it another great option for sensitive skin. It also requires less maintenance than other metals with just a polish every now and then.

your fingers are usually a bit smaller when your hands are cold! Keep in mind that platinum is a heavier metal than gold, so if you think you’d be uncomfortable with a heavier ring, 24-karat gold may be the way to go. Adversely, many people choose platinum over gold because of the added weight. Which one is right for you? Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Try both styles to see what will work best with your preferences, budget and lifestyle.

Budget Considering you will ideally be wearing your wedding ring every day, it’s a good idea to choose something that you really like and is high quality. Since 24-karat gold is more expensive than platinum, if you’re on a budget, platinum could be the way to go. Plus, if you’re a little clumsy with your jewellery already, it may be best to invest in something slightly more durable. Shape and size The most important thing is to find a shape, metal and size that you’re happy with and comfortable wearing. Due to its quality, the best ring metals are also the most comfortable. When sizing, ensure your rings are big enough not to be uncomfortable but small enough not to fall off. Remember that

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

80

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON

PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.

WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!

THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.

HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.
