here at last, and for many that means tying the knot; glass of bubbles or Pimm’s in hand while enjoying the heat (which, to be fair, we need to take advantage of!). However, what I truly love about the North East is that weddings are stunning regardless of the time of year. Autumn brings with it a red and amber hue, with falling leaves and a crispness to the air; winter offers a taste of magic, thanks to incredible scenery and venues dusted in snow; and spring is yet another amazing time of year to say ‘we do’, with snowdrops and crocuses blanketing the grounds. I know you don’t need convincing, but just in case turn to our cover stars, Jessie and Dan; who married in cooler-than-cool January (p30). Or, for something more relevant to that bright yellow thing in the sky, head to page 25 for Anna and Dan’s August celebration.
Summer’s

Elsewhere, I’ve plenty more inspo to gear you up for the best day of your lives. Venue-wise, check out where to wed in Sunderland and close by (p15); or embrace rustic chic with some oh-so-head turning spaces (p21). I’ve also been busy catching up with the North East’s best photographers (p47) and venue stylists (p43); as well as chatting to industry experts who’ve answered all your wedding concerns (p75). Then there’s all the prizes I have on offer, from a night out to remember at Darlington Hippodrome (p13), to an incredible four-night trip to Thailand (p85)!

If you’re searching for bridal hair for your big day consider Marskeby-the-Sea’s Garden of Eden Hairdressing, a brand new independent salon. “I’ve over 13 years’ experience, meaning I can create beautiful hair for all your wedding day needs,” says owner Jade Graham. “From elegant hair up, to soft, bouncy curls, I can perfectly tailor to you and your style. After working in salons for years I decided it was time to start a new challenge and open my own business. The salon is everything I envisioned, with calming colours and soft furnishings to help people feel at home. I currently offer one to one appointments, and you’re more than welcome to bring a friend or family member along. Children and small dogs are welcome, too – having a small child myself I understand how hard it can be to arrange childcare around appointments.”

ESCAPE FROM IT ALL
Northumberland’s Linden Hall Hotel has seen a substantial rise in elopement weddings in the past months, as more couples opt for a ceremony for just the two of them.
Wedding and special events planner Louise McMaster believes it’s the desire to avoid family drama and save on costs that’s driving the trend. “Covid changed the way we think about weddings, and even though normality has resumed, people’s eyes were opened to the romance of a small affair,” she says. “I’ve never seen this level of elopement weddings – it’s definitely a big trend of the summer.”
Thinking of eloping? Linden Hall Hotel is a 450-acre private estate set in idyllic countryside, with a championship 18-hole golf course, luxurious spa facilities and 50 bedrooms. Their Just Us Wedding package includes three nights’ accommodation, access to the spa, two witnesses, personalised menu, Champagne Afternoon Tea and more. Nestled in the countryside, Walworth Castle Hotel can host your wedding from start to finish. Set in 18 acres of lawns and woodlands, Walworth Castle Hotel offers wedding photo opportunities aplenty, from the castle itself to the wishing well or even beside the oak trees – which are well over 100 years old.
Your vows can be taken in any number of spaces, starting with the beautiful Ballroom, complete with 16th century coving and architecture
and able to host up to 100 guests. If the sun is shining, choose to say ‘I do’ in Lady Palmers Pavilion, an outdoor ceremony garden which is very popular during the summer months. Anna and Dan’s August wedding was perfect in every way
Images courtesy of Chocolate Chip Photography
Anna and Dan knew each other from a young age, but didn’t start talking until years later. “Dan was in Australia, and I’d booked to go travelling there,” says Anna. “We got chatting over Facebook about where I needed to go and stay; before planning on meeting up – however, Dan came home from his travels early for a job. I travelled for six months while Dan was home, and throughout that time we spoke every day. He picked me up from the airport when I landed – and that was that!” Dan proposed after the couple had been together for four
years. “It was at the beginning of December; my favourite time of year,” says the bride. “Dan took me away for the night to Alnwick, proposing at Alnwick Garden’s Treehouse Restaurant. It was a total surprise, as even though we’d spoken about getting married, we were busy renovating our house, so agreed that was our priority. Needless to say, I was delighted!”
The couple set the date of 11 August, 2022, choosing Barn on the Bay as their venue. Here, Anna tells us more about their incredible day…
25 REAL WEDDINGS
We wanted our wedding to be laidback; and Barn on the Bay totally fitted that brief. We also loved how close the venue was to the beach –one guest even went for a dip on the day!
To go with our bohemian theme, I wanted dried flowers which included pampas grass. The bouquets also featured subtle sprays of rose gold, just because I love the colour!
We made the table plan ourselves. We took ideas off Pinterest, did a bit of shopping for collage photo frames on eBay, and printed the table plans off.
Neither of us are cake lovers, and we know friends who gave out cake weeks after their wedding. We instead decided on a selection of chocolate brownies, which went down a treat.
The bouquets were used as centre pieces for the tables, with Barn on the Bay also discussing with us the type of colours and textures we wanted for the tables.
The wedding arch featured one of my own macramé pieces, which I do as a hobby in my spare time. It’s now available to hire via our florist, so I’m excited to see it at other weddings!

We asked a select number of friends and family to drive us in their cars. My godfather drove me, my dad and my sister, and it was extremely helpful having the usual family banter to calm my nerves.
We actually didn’t get legally married on our wedding day, choosing our close friend, Sonny, as our officiant. We chose our own vows and Sonny also included a poem which defined marriage.
Out of the two of us, it’s always me who blubbers at things like weddings, but Dan actually became quite emotional when we were saying our vows, which I didn’t expect.
never wear white, so I loved how the dress had a nude underskirt. I also don’t like anything fussy, so the embroidered detail was perfect.
I absolutely love green, so it was always going to be the colour theme for our day. I asked my bridesmaids to choose their own dress style as long as it was in… you guessed it… green!
Dan and his groomsmen wore lightweight beige linen suits, which perfectly complemented our bridesmaids’ dresses – and also kept them cool in the heat.
My Cate by Madi Lane gown was the first dress I tried on. I

Food was always going to be a big part of our day, choosing Acropolis after being regular customers of theirs. It was exactly what we wanted; relaxed, informal and delicious!
We wanted live music rather than a playlist or a DJ. JustSO sang throughout our ceremony and reception drinks, creating the atmosphere we wanted while everyone mingled.
We also had the band Midnight Train perform for the evening. They got everyone up on their feet, including one of our caterers, who also happens to be a professional Greek dancer!
Make sure you steal each other away for a bit, leaving your guests to go and hide! We took a drink and plate of appetisers and sat with each other for 10 minutes with no one else around.

Look at the Stars
A proposal under the stars was Dan’s plan for Jessie – although it didn’t turn out that way! Images courtesy of Jess Lathan Photography

and Dan met at work. “I had a meeting with Dan in my first couple of weeks and he was so formal I thought he hated me!” remembers Jessie. “Eight months later, he went on a business trip to the Philippines, and I heard him mention that he didn’t want to go. I reached out to him over our work chat to check in and ask how it was going, and we ended up talking non-stop the whole time he was there!”
Dan proposed when the couple had been together four years. “We booked a getaway to a log cabin in the Scottish borders, where we were expecting to have amazing views of the stars from our hot tub,” says Jessie. “However, we actually ended up with a really cloudy night and couldn’t see a thing! Dan eventually asked me to marry him while we were sat on a bench in our coats under the clouds – but it was just as lovely. I had a feeling for a few months that a proposal might be coming, but I didn’t expect the ring he chose. It was a yellow sapphire, which was so unusual and special to me.”
The couple set the date for the 2 January, 2023, choosing Middleton Lodge for their big day. Here, Jessie tells us more…
JUST THE TWO OF US
Jessie and Dan had originally planned to elope to Gretna Green. “We talked a lot about waiting for five years and then marrying in front of a few of our closest friends and family,” continues the bride. “We then got Googling, and decided to visit one venue out of curiosity, as it was the perfect distance between Dan’s family and mine. We fell for Middleton Lodge completely! I love period properties and it has such gorgeous Georgian charm, including the big oval hall with curved staircase, where we ended up having our ceremony. The lady who showed us around made a joke that if we got married in January she’d do a good deal, and so we decided to go for it there and then! So much for the five year elopement we said we wanted – instead we ended up with six months to plan a big wedding!”
With little time to spare, the couple flew into action. “I reached out to Loved by Lucy for her handwritten stationary, as her style really complemented the beautiful house we were getting married in,” says Jessie. “She sent me a picture of the table plan a few days before the wedding on Instagram, and accidentally put a filter with little white stars over the picture. I loved them so much as it reminded me of our (very much not starry) engagement, so I asked her to draw them on to the acrylic! She also created our place names and table number signs in the same handwritten style as our plan; even adding pink ribbon to each place name to match the flowers.”
FLOWER POWER
When it came to the couple’s flowers, Jessie and Dan trusted the judgement of the wedding photographer they’d chosen, who suggested a florist they’d worked with before. “We had no real idea of what we wanted, so asked her to go with whatever she thought would look best,” says the bride. “Hannah created an incredible look book for the day with a colour scheme, inspiration pictures, and a list of the flowers she was planning to source. It was better than anything we could have done! We also planned the other parts of our day, such as flower girl dresses and table styling, to match the look book she created for us.”
Cake-wise, it was down to Dan’s mum, Janet, to take charge. “You’ll find no better baker than Janet!” says Jessie. “She made her signature carrot cupcakes, as well as Bailey’s and chocolate and red velvet flavoured creations. They were way better than anything we could have bought! For the actual cake cutting, we ended up buying a plain two-tier design from M&S, sticking a few icing flowers on it. It was simple and effective; with all the guests tucking into Janet’s cupcakes instead.”

OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Jessie’s gown was the total opposite of what she was looking for. “I wore the Madison James Marlette design, which Danni at Sisters of Grace asked me to try on as her wild card. I was instantly sold! I really wasn’t looking for strapless, but the back of the dress was so beautiful that I had to go for it. The amazing seamstress at Diva Designs For You had the idea to add some flutter sleeves for a bit of extra coverage, and she made them detachable for the after-party. I was also able to buy the sample dress off the rail given the short notice of our wedding, so it turned out to be another huge saving!”
Dan also ensured he looked the part for the couple’s day. “He chose a dark green corduroy suit which was very fitting for the time of year,” continues Jessie. “Teaming it with a gold tie pin and sleeve garters to match his gold wedding ring, he also bought some black Oxford-style shoes for the day. He got tons of compliments on his suit, and we’re now looking for any occasion for him to wear it again!”
SOUND OF MUSIC
Music was a key theme throughout Jessie and Dan’s wedding. “Our pianist Ray played in the main house for the ceremony and drinks reception, and kept the music going throughout the wedding breakfast in the marquee,” says the bride. “We had a DJ play for a couple of hours after our first dance to Sigrid’s Home To You, but the real party started when we moved into the cellar bar beneath the main house. Our friends brought glow sticks, and the two barmen played DJ, picking the best tunes from a Spotify playlist to keep the party going until 2am. Those guys deserve a raise!”
As with all weddings, the day wasn’t without the odd hiccup. “The videographers were in the bridal suite while I got ready in the morning, and they mentioned they were going over to get some footage of Dan,” remembers Jessie. “I text him to let them know they were coming, and as a joke said not to get in the shower as they wanted some shower footage! About 20 minutes later I was just finishing getting ready, only to pick up my phone to find Dan had thought I was serious and was panicking that they still hadn’t arrived. He’d been waiting for them for his ‘shower shoot’ and was nearly late for the guests arriving!”

LOVE &
marriage
Ailsa and Scott hosted a wedding to remember at The Parlour at Blagdon

and Scott met at work. “I was Scott’s manager, with us trying to be serious at work making things tricky at the start,” says the bride. “However, his smile and humour soon drew me to him. We’re also the total opposites: I’m serious, and he isn’t, and I hate mess – and he’s so untidy! It just goes to show that opposites do attract!”
Ailsa
Scott popped the question after the couple had been together six years. “We took a trip to Scotland, exploring Loch Fyne and Loch Lomond,” continues Ailsa. “I always said if Scott was ever to propose, not to do it up a hill or mountain, as although I enjoy it I’m partial to moaning about
the climb! Of course, he ignored that, finding a hill and having us walk higher and higher. I whinged and whinged until we got to the top, before we sat on a bench and discussed what to do next. Scott asked if I’d enjoyed all the surprises –the locations in Scotland and activities he’d planned. He then said; ‘I have one more surprise’, which was when he got down on one knee. I burst out crying – it was the happiest I’d ever felt and it was so special being just the two of us.”
The couple set the date of 18 February, 2023 – Ailsa’s 30th birthday – choosing The Parlour at Blagdon as their venue. Here, Ailsa tells us more about their big day…
37 REAL WEDDINGS
Scott’s a joker and likes to wind his friends up, so we picked shots as favours for our guests to do during his speech. Their faces said it all!
Our florist was amazing from the get-go. She made the most beautiful bouquet using eucalyptus, lisianthus, gypsophelia, white delphinium, asparagus fern and white roses.
When visiting The Parlour at Blagdon we instantly fell in love! I felt a rush of excitement when I stepped foot in the ceremony room, as I could envision myself getting married there.
The centrepieces on the table were jam jars built up from a year’s collection and a lot of flowers supplied by our venue stylist.
I made the table plans myself, incorporating photos of our pets on them, as we couldn’t find a design we liked.
38
We made our own place names, as Scott’s view was ‘people look to find their seat, and that’s that’. I couldn’t argue –he had a point!
On the morning of our wedding I was so excited and couldn’t wait to start getting ready. We popped the Prosecco and started the very early 5am morning preparations!
I knew I wanted a dress with lace, and something which complemented my figure. My Stella York gown was breath-taking, and I felt so confident and happy wearing it.
For someone who isn’t bothered by styles, every single suit Scott tried on wasn’t right! Eventually we found the perfect ones in Next; plain navy with grey waistcoat and pink tie.
I had eight bridesmaids, and wanted them all to feel beautiful on the day. I ordered a variety of dresses, and it was lovely spending an afternoon together trying them on.
39
REAL WEDDINGS
We couldn’t have been happier with our catering. Everyone who attended our wedding said it was one of the best wedding menus they’ve tasted.
My Nana is a very precious lady to us all. She spent the day feeling like a celebrity, as everyone was making a huge fuss over her!
My twin sister did an incredible maid of honour speech. It was our 30th birthday on our wedding day, so I had to twist her arm a little bit to let us get married on the same day!
We stumbled across local singer, Dave Lynas at a beer festival. He had everyone up on their feet singing along, and I’d recommend him to anyone.

“We consider ourselves easy going, inspiring confidence in couples and making them realise they’re in safe hands. This means when the big day rolls round they can enjoy every moment and be present in the day as much as possible. We love capturing people who aren’t worrying about the camera and exuding all the emotions it brings. There’s always some that love the camera and some not so much, and we love working with both – and those in-between.”

“I shoot in a more natural style, capturing authenticity and personality that feels true to who you are. I snap raw emotions and soak in the little details and elements of your day. This of course doesn’t mean my images are totally unposed, as I do give direction and prompts during portraits. However, I also encourage you to play around freely so we can capture images that you can look back on and really feel your love story unfold before your eyes.”

“I used to use the word ‘candid’ until I realised no one knows what it means! Today I say ‘relaxed’ and with no posing – I tried that in the early years and have never seen anything so awkward in my life! Luckily the couple also found it hilarious, and we decided to go for a walk asking them to stop and talk along the way. That’s when I realised I’m there to capture the true personalities of a couple. Saying that, if there’s a crazy request, I’ll always try it!”

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
66

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

Q&A Beauty
The hair and make-up experts behind these bridedmaids’ looks answer your beauty dilemmas
PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW
My bridesmaids have different colour hair and eyes.
How can they look similar for our day but without it affecting their individuality?
HAIR STYLIST SIÂN SAYS: It’s a personal thing; depending on dress style, hair type, face shape and general preference. I’d suggest a style to suit all, if they don’t already have a good idea of what they would like. The weather makes a difference, too – if it’s humid, foggy or windy, hair up can be a good choice. Most brides just want their bridesmaids to be comfortable with what they have, so give them their own choice. I’m here to work with the whole bridal party to ensure they’re entirely happy with what they have. My only real stipulation is I ask no one put hair masks on beforehand, as it tends to make any curls you may want drop. Washing and blowdrying your hair the day before is advised, too, so there’s plenty of time on the morning to enjoy a relaxed and happy atmosphere.
Siân Cable | Hair There and Everywhere
www.instagram.com/hairthereandeverywherebysian
MAKE-UP ARIST URSZULA SAYS: On the wedding day the bride is boss, so I always discuss make-up looks with her first. If the bride’s happy for me to do whatever suits the bridesmaids I usually go for a classic, timeless and elegant soft glam look, that suits just about everyone – but without outshining the bride. I love using subtle shades of brown and gold with a touch of Champagne on their eyes, with a clean or blended liner finished with a pair of my recent-favourite half lashes. Groomed but not overdone brows always look good, while for skin I opt for medium coverage foundation with a dewy or demi matte finish, depending on the bridesmaid’s skin. Bronzed cheeks with pink or peach blusher and a soft highlighter are also a great touch, while a nude pink lipstick with optional gloss finish completes the look.

The international best-selling Orient Bambino Watch Series now includes a long-awaited 38mm diameter case perfect for grooms-to-be.
The Classic and Simple Style Series, known as Orient Bambino by dedicated fans, features traditional design features such as a convex dial and domed glass. The series has been a consistent best-seller over the last decade in 70 countries around the world. Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.
The beautiful finish can be admired through the see-through back, and the domed glass and convex dial create a vintage feel. The dial is available in beige as well as black and white, which complements the simple design perfectly.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

THE BAR’S THE STAR
We want cocktails for our wedding; but don’t know whether we need a set number per guest or a total amount we want to spend. Can you help?
Summer weddings in England are a time for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with a cocktail? There are many different cocktail packages available to choose from, so you can find the perfect one to fit your budget and style. We provide a classic cocktail package; charging either a price per guest or based on an agreed number of cocktails. This package includes a selection of classics, such as the Margarita, Mojito and Daiquiri. We can also provide a signature cocktail reception hour, which allows you to create your own creations. Choose from a variety of spirits, mixers and garnishes to create cocktails unique to your wedding, to be served as a reception drink or during the day. Plus, not forgetting our mocktail package; perfect for guests who don’t drink alcohol. It includes a selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, such as virgin Margaritas, Mojitos and Daiquiris.

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas
SHE’S GOT THE LOOK
I want a classic wedding dress that won’t date. We’re getting married in a manor house – do you have any suggestions? Creating a timeless look for a manor house wedding is a wonderful idea and will really add to the look of your wedding images when you look back in the future. I would recommend going with something that has some good construction in the bodice and has some real flounce-appeal in the skirt. That way you get the most drama and it will also ensure you stand out against the regal and dramatic backdrop of your venue. You could really go to town with the fabric and sleeves, too, as long as you stay with a shorter or off-the-shoulder sleeve design. I would suggest Peony by DAMA Couture, which also has the added benefit of having printed peonies in the fabric of the dress, so will also make your look really memorable to your guests.

ALWAYS IN BLOOM
I’m so excited about my wedding bouquet – it’s going to be incredible! But I’m also sad about the thought of it only being remembered in photos. What else can I do?
Made by Mannie specialises in flower and memorial preservation, helping you keep those memories alive forever. We can dry your fresh flowers, then set them into any of our resin pieces or dry frames on our website. If you want to keep your flowers whole we recommend a deeper piece such as a block or sphere. Our prices start from as little as £20 and we have no minimum spend. We can even arrange for your flowers to be hand delivered or posted, then we do all the rest! We understand wedding flowers can be really expensive and then it’s such a shame to see them go to waste after your big day! Let us create an exquisite keepsake that you can enjoy over and over again.

MUSIC TO MY EARS
My best friend hired a DJ based on a recommendation – and they failed to show on the day! What should we look for to make sure we hire the best – and how can we prevent this happening to us?
While it’s always good to get a recommendation from someone you know regarding a DJ you should always do your own research, as getting the right DJ for your wedding can literally make or break your day. Take a look at their website and social media and get a good feel for the work they’ve done, in particular what experience they have in playing at weddings. Always check their reviews on Facebook and Google and see what their previous clients have said, too. Most reputable wedding DJs will have lots of five star reviews available for you to read through. If they don’t have a website and or very few reviews, move swiftly on! When you find one that looks and sounds good ask for a quotation, as well as finding out about their experience. Don’t be afraid to ask to see pictures of their set up and their approach to meeting your music requirements. Some companies hire in DJs, so while their website and social media can look really professional this may not be the case for the DJ! So always make sure you know who is going to be the DJ at your wedding.

HONEYMOON NEWS 79
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
HONEYMOON REVIEW 81
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 83
Do not disturb
Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
