New Liverpool bridal boutique, Unbridled Studio, was founded by creative director Anna Vesty who has drawn upon her extensive experience designing for luxury readyto-wear and bridal brands. Anna is joined by commercial director Ruth Malton who has more than 20 years in the fashion industry, working with several world-renowned brands. It was at iconic British brand Amanda Wakeley where Anna and Ruth met. The brand’s unconventional and beautifully-cut styles allow you to customise your bridal look and make it as unique as you are. From modern bridal gowns to transformative layering pieces, Unbridled Studio offers cleverly-cut bridal pieces with multiple styling options. THAT FUZZY FEELING Pantone, the global colour authority and provider of professional colour language standards, has introduced its colour of the year 2024: PANTONE 13-1023, or to you and me, Peach Fuzz! Here at Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding HQ this annual announcement is always highly anticipated, as we love to see how the wedding industry will embrace each new hue. Last year, Viva Magenta flew and we saw it inspiring many a glorious styled shoot. Indeed, thanks to the hotlytipped colour-palette trend for 2024, we think it’ll be sticking around. We’re all loving this year’s reveal though. For us in the wedding industry, it’s a more traditional return to gentle pastels and with rusts and corals proving popular during the second half of 2023, we think Peach Fuzz will be welcomed with open arms. We can’t wait to see what the industry’s creatives do with it.

Five minutes with...

CHESTER-BASED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER JAINE BRISCOE-PRICE

So Jaine, once engaged how would a couple go about finding the right photographer for them? Everyone has an opinion on what to do next – talk about total information overload! An important point to remember is that Instagram pages and websites will include the photographers’ very best work but do they show a venue like yours or tones you love, or real couples? Find a few photographers whose work you like and have worked at your venue or, hopefully in your area, then speak to them. Honestly, booking someone without at least a zoom is just crazy and leaves both you and the photographer open to problems! What should a couple ask during their first meeting? There are five questions that you won’t want to miss out. Find out whether they’ll travel that day or stay over and whether that cost is your issue. You’ll need to know if their coverage/hours cover their travel-time too. It’s also well worth asking whether they offer a pre-wedding shoot, and where that’ll be. Also, take note of everything included in the package you’re being offered, so there aren’t any surprises or disappointments. Finally, and crucially, if they’re ill, how will they cover your day? Is a planning meeting really necessary? Totally! You might think your photographer knows what you want but without a catch-up something might be missed – we’re not mind readers! Equally, something they feel is needed might not be overly 10

important to you. I’ve recently heard of complaints where a key shot was missed (like an aunt over from Australia), so don’t let that be you. If it’s important, list it; but be careful to strike a balance. Don’t list every single shot needed or your imagery will become static and forced. What’s your top tip for the big day? Relax, enjoy and trust your photographer. What’s new with you? 2023 was an amazing year! After 25 years as a professional photographer, entering awards means the harder I try the better the imagery I can produce for you. The image shown here won image of the month with the Guild of Photographers and over the last year, they received 12,000 entries over five genres with the wedding category being highly sought after. In fact, this image is now one of 10 shortlisted for Wedding Image of The Year 2023, which makes me incredibly proud.

JODRELL BANK CENTRE FOR ENGAGEMENT 0161 306 9695 | www.jodrellbank.net Jodrell Bank, nestled in the heart of the Cheshire countryside is a renowned UNESCO heritage site and visitor attraction connected to space exploration and the history of astronomy. Its iconic Grade I listed Lovell telescope, the third largest radio telescope in the world, has been listening to the skies for more than 65 years and continues to be used to this day. It truly is a location that’s out of this world! Jodrell Bank was originally operated by the Department of Botany at the University of Manchester in the 1940s. Sir Bernard Lovell, who operated the site in the 20th century, was an avid botanist, as well as astrophysicist, meaning the site is now home to an impressive 3,000 specimens of trees and shrubs. These form the Lovell Tree Collection, which opened to the public in 1976. These trees, seeds and plants were gifted to Sir Bernard on many of his visits to space observatories, international universities and space projects around the world making the grounds now full of blossom and spectacular nature all year round.

Ceremonies with 100 guests are held in the Space Dome 3D Planetarium, which opened in 2022 and is one of just a handful in the world. You can choose from a range of spectacular moving backdrops taken from the Hubble Telescope to appear during your ceremony, so you can truly be wed beneath the stars. All ceremonies are followed by a one-hour drinks reception in the First Light Pavilion before you head off to your reception. The Star Pavilion sits on the south side of the estate with views of the iconic Lovell Telescope and Cheshire countryside, and is where wedding receptions are hosted. The Wolfson Auditorium is a self-contained conference suite with private facilities for your guests and can accommodate up to 120 for a seated reception. The space is equipped with an AV system for speeches and presentations and boasts a private outdoor patio area for warm summer evenings. You’ll also receive access to The Angle Meeting Room to prepare for your special day. Accommodation wise, the venue is close to a range of options from local historical house properties to local B&Bs and campsites.

icky and Dave met at Tabley Point To Point – “Neither of us were looking for love, just a couple of wins on the horses,” Nicky says. “Our friend introduced us later that evening playing Cilla, and surprise, surprise we went off on our first date a week later!” Having been married before, Dave swore he wouldn’t tie the knot again, but during the course of his relationship with Nicky completely changed his outlook. So, Nicky had no idea what was on his mind when he decided to propose as they’d discussed their future many times, and although it would be committed, there would never be a wedding. “I was overcome with happiness and emotion when he snuck upstairs with our twins in tow and got down on one knee,” she remembers. The couple live just down the road from Arley Hall and both knew it would be the perfect setting for their special day. “It’s country, it’s grand, it’s statement, it’s so us,” Nicky says. So, they wasted no time in securing the date for 8th September, 2023. Read on as the bride tells us more...

SETTING THE SCENE Nicky and Dave opted for a chic colour palette of navy, gold and deep green and styled their wedding around it. Centrepieces featured palm leaves and peacock feathers supported by ornate gold stands. The remainder of the floral displays dressing the rest of the venue included the same. The place names were white with gold foil writing and green accents, while the table numbers too were displayed on white with gold foil. Guests were guided to their seats by the table plan, which was included in the couple’s wedding newspapers. Even the cake was designed to match with an uber-stylish Art Deco theme bedecked in navy and gold. The daytime catering, provided by Barratts, included cauliflower satay chilli skewers or Cheshire pate; beer battered fish’n’chips with crushed peas; finished with sticky toffee pudding with a popcorn caramel side and custard. During the evening Outback Pizza Company stepped up to the plate, serving incredible pizzas from a converted Land Rover 110. Finally, Kings’ Cheese & Wine set up a mouthwatering cheese wall, Dave made his own fancy crisp wall, and Merryfall created a selection of divine cake pops beautifully decorated in navy and gold.

“Take everything in your stride and do you as a couple, not what everyone else has an opinion on.” LOOKING THE PART Nicky looked stunning in her gown from Sarah’s Wedding Boutique in Northwich, which she accessorised with a Vivienne Westwood Bracelet, Gucci necklace, and Jimmy Choo shoes. Meanwhile, Dave wore a three-piece tweed suit and finished the look with a Longine watch, tan brogues, pheasant tie and gun cartridge cufflinks. “The look was very Dave – country and smart,” says Nicky. The groomsmen wore three-piece navy suits also with tan brogues and pheasant ties, plus pheasant and cartridge buttonholes. The bride’s party looked oh-so elegant in navy dresses with gold shoes and peacock hair pieces.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple hired a DJ to pack the dancefloor, as well as a sax player to add some Ibiza vibes and musician Jack Bennett. Nicky says of Jack: “He’s absolutely amazing and can be found from Liverpool to the South of France at weddings, and has recently been over to Texas to sing. He really knows how to level up a crowd and get them buzzing.” 31

REAL WEDDINGS

“Keep everything flowing, guests should feel entertained throughout, then there’s no reason or room to complain if there are any lulls!” MEMORABLE MOMENTS The ceremony was the highlight of the day for Nicky, and similarly for Dave seeing his Nic Nic for the first time was a standout moment. “That aside, genuinely the whole day was amazing from beginning to end, guests haven’t stopped talking about all the details we added to keep them entertained throughout. It was a dream come true,” Nicky shares. Unbeknownst to guests the couple had enlisted the help of best man, Chris, and the bridesmaids for their fist dance. Complete with inflatable mic, Chris played the role of Robert Palmer, while the girls with inflatable guitars at the ready, played the backing band from the iconic Addicted To Love video. “When the music started and they walked in, guests couldn’t believe it,” Nicky remembers. “Then the DJ announced the new Mr and Mrs and we made our own entrance from behind the crowd and danced along with our singer and backups. It was fantastic, funny and a moment we’ll never forget.” Nicky says, “Our photographer, Caroline White, made the day run like clockwork, got the best shots discreetly while really making a good impression with the guests and she felt more like a lifelong friend than purely a photographer. Her work is absolutely breathtaking. We love every one of our photographs, and a lot of them we weren’t even aware of being taken. She made everyone feel at ease – what a gal!” 33

Lindsay and Dave’s day was bursting with fun, laughter and love Images courtesy of Keyhole Studios

L

indsay and Dave both swiped right on Tinder and went on a first date. “I loved that Dave had two dogs, lots of hobbies and is a good prosecco drinker too,” Lindsay says. Dave proposed at the top of Peel Tower in 2021. His last name is Peel and one of their favourite dog walking routes passes right by it, so it was all meant to be! “It had been snowing, so it was very romantic. When we got to the top of the tower, Dave put little bandanas on the dogs who came running over so I could then see the message on them: Will you marry my dad? Of course I said, ‘Yes.’” Lindsay tells us.

As the couple started their planning during the pandemic, their venue viewings were all virtual. Lindsay knew people who’d been to Inglewood Manor and had told her how beautiful it was, so she was keen to look into it as a host for their big day. They loved the ideal of getting married outside before moving inside for a wedding breakfast in the opulent Edwardian room. What’s more, they were allowed to have their beloved fur babies with them for some post-ceremony pics, which meant a lot to the couple. The date was set for 3rd June, 2023. Read on as the bride gives us the lowdown...

37

Always get a photo with your mum or mother figure in the morning, they’re normally the most invested in your day and it all goes so quickly that you might miss out on the opportunity.

My crystal tiara and two-tier veil were from Liverpool Bridal Boutique. My tiara was bought for me by my godmother who came dress shopping with my mum and I. It was a lovely gift from her. Dave wore a tux with black braces and a black dickie bow. I got the inspiration from Paris Hilton’s wedding and just thought it looked so classy but also fun. Dave is really funny, so I thought the bow tie matched his personality.

I travelled with my dad to Inglewood Manor in a Royal Imperial wedding car. Dave and I also went for a drive in it after the ceremony, so it was great to have some time together as we could catch up on how our mornings had gone.

We had a blossom moongate at the ceremony altar, which was later moved to the reception top table. 38

It was the best feeling having my dad walk me down the aisle and give me away to Dave, who was a little more emotional and nervous than me. It didn’t help that I was running a little late!

I wore an ivory lace gown, style 9811 by Allure Bridals. It had a huge train, which was the main attraction for me. I always wanted a big dramatic train with something more simple on the front.

REAL WEDDINGS

The groomsmen wore tuxes too but with champagne-coloured bow ties and pocket squares. They also had multicoloured socks from Oddballs, a charity sock subscription company. Dave loves them, so it was his little touch.

My four bridesmaids wore taupe sequin-top dresses. The lower half was a stretchy mesh, which was great for the two pregnant members of my bride tribe! Our two flowergirls wore little ivory dresses, which matched my veil with their horsehair finish.

Centrepieces were candelabras, white blossom trees, scattered crystals and lots of candles.

During the day we had an ice cream stall, which was a big hit as it was 25 degrees, so everyone needed a cool down! Flavours were chocolate fudge brownie, raspberry Pavlova, mint choc chip and lemon sorbet.

My mum and I made biscuits with white icing saying Mr & Mrs Peel plus our wedding date. I’d seen the idea on Facebook and they turned out great.

For our flower arrangements we had my favourites, peonies, along with white and mocha VIP roses with plenty of foliage. 39

Our three-tier big-day bake featured our two dogs Ted and Sasha. The bottom layer was white chocolate and raspberry, the second was chocolate orange, and the third was chocolate fudge. It was delicious!

I designed our place names in pastel colours and script font taking inspiration from our invitations. Dave did all the hard work though, cutting grooves into the prosecco corks all from bottles I’d drank since I was 30. Our wedding breakfast started with a pressed terrine of ham hock, mustard and parsley with piccalilli, watercress and toasted sourdough bread. The main course was slow cooked brisket of beef with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables cooked in braising liquor and rich gravy. This was all finished with a warm chocolate brownie with honeycomb and vanilla ice cream.

Our first dance song was the Schitt’s Creek version of Simply The Best by Noah Reid. As we were watching the show at the time we got engaged, we just loved this version of Tina Turner’s original.

We walked into the wedding reception with guests swirling napkins with our favourite song playing: Don Omar by Danza Kuduro ft. Lucenzo. Dave’s mum danced in with my parents first and then we went around the tables. It was a great moment and gave everyone a lift ready for the speeches.

My adrenaline was so high all day! I’m glad we have a video to look back on as I can’t remember some of it.

We had a DJ, saxophonist and a beats drummer in the evening. They played old-school 90s music such as Eternal, N-Trance, Ultrabeat and more. It was great as everyone was up dancing all night, and could even have a go on the drums. Don’t get off the dancefloor! If you’re on there then everyone else is too making a great atmosphere.

ath met Josh at a party and the minute she saw him turned to her friends and said, “I’m going to marry him!” How right she was, two short years later, Josh proposed on holiday in Majorca. “It was such a surprise,” Kath says. “He was all nervous because he’d not been able to get in touch with my dad to ask for his blessing.” Nevertheless, all went perfectly and it was soon time to start looking for a venue for the big day. Kath saw Knowsley Hall on social media and had fallen in love with it. So, it was the first place they booked to view and as it happened ended up being the only place. “I loved it from the minute we turned onto the driveway and saw the Hall for the first time. We booked within two weeks of getting engaged,” Kath shares. With the date set for 16th September 2023, it was onwards with the rest of the planning. Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown...

I accessorised with a simple pair of white heels and a stunning hair comb. I wore a Pronovias gown called Pickford

. It was a 1920s-style dress with sleeves and back details that wow ed.

Josh wore a black velvet tuxedo jacket with a bow tie and black tuxedostyle suit trousers. He bought his own suit rather than hire it so he could keep it forever and it didn’t work out too much more expensive.

on in D played on violin.

I walked down the aisle to Pachabel Can 44

Josh was the only one to wear velvet, so he stood out from his groomsmen, who wore traditional black tuxes.

I was actually 10 weeks preg nant on our wedding day! We were over the moon for more than one reason and of course it changed some of the day for us, well for me, having to substitut e my fizz for Nosecco. We look back now on the stunning photos that Stacey captured of us and we’re so grateful that we can tell our daughter in a few years that she was technically a part of our most special day!

REAL WEDDINGS

My bridesmaids looked stunning in one-shoulder dresses. I found sourcing their gowns the most difficult of tasks with lots of fabric samples obtained from online boutiques being very different to website imaging, so I was pleased when I found these bargain gowns.

We incorporated gold details in elements like the table plan, place names and even the cake, which was four tiers with gold glitter detailing on two, plus our names in gold script on the third.

Our florist, Flowerstyle by Laurie in Formby, works extensively with Knowsley Hall, so he created our centrepieces, which worked just as well in the ceremony room as they did when moved to the reception space. He also utilised additional sweet-smelling stocks to ensure we got the floral fragrance despite the season not being in our favour on that front.

There’s a lot of gold and wood detail at Knowsley Hall, and we went back and forth on palettes for almost a year looking for the perfect shades to complement it. After trawling social media for previous weddings there I came across one wher e the men wore tuxedos and the bridesmaids wore black and said to Josh, ‘That’s it! We’re doing black and white.’

with my only brief being that I I delegated some of the flowers to my mum uets shouldn’t be too big. My wanted predominantly white and the bouq ning beading and lace, so I wasn’t dress was extremely detailed with stun ld detract from it. keen on the idea that the bouquets shou

One extra that really got guests talking was our wedding-day newspaper from Crafty Lab, which contained the order of service, details on our favours (donations to The British Hear t Foundation and Tommy’s), plus fun activities such as scan and snap QR code allowing guests to submit 10 pictures each on the day.

The food at Knowsley Hall was stunning! We’d been for the tasting but to produce food of that quality at the scale they do is no easy task, people are still talking about the beef we had for main course even now. While we were eating we had a pianist to entertain guests with hits from the 70s through to the present day. He went down a storm with everyone joining in and giving requests by the end of the meal! He really set everybody up nicely for the evening reception. I’d highly recommend having music during the food.

The staff at Knowsley Hall are out of this world, helpfu l but never interfer ing, the day ran like clockwork and I didn’t hav e to worry about anything on the day itself. They even made sure Josh and I got 15 minutes to sit down together and tak e it all in before we did pho tos and food. It’s such a small detail but it ma de all the difference on the day.

Stacey our photographer was also exceptional, she knew that the two things on our photo wish list were wanting to make the most of the stunning location and letting our guests just enjoy the day and venue without having to pose for photos. She struck the best balance for all of us, and when the photos arrived we couldn’t believe the range of styles we got.

We went to Cyprus for a week a couple of days after the wedding, it was very last minute as we’d originally planned an epic Singapore and Bali trip for 2024 but had to cancel when we found out we were expecting. We had a great time relaxing after the hectic build up to the wedding though.

Ask your venue if they schedule any time alone for the bride and groom in the day to just sit and take it in, if they don’t, ask them to put it in!

nspiration for this stunning styled shoot came from the classic, elegant weddings at historical English halls and manor houses we all love. “We wanted to bring together a team of suppliers from across Cheshire and beyond to showcase each of our work in a gorgeous bridal setting,” says model and shoot coordinator Lucy Allen. The shoot took place at the beautiful Willington Hall Hotel and Gardens in Tarpoley, which provided the perfect backdrop for these editorial images. The oh-so on trend neutral colour palette is accented with pops of pink and purple through the bouquets and matching buttonholes. While the bridal dress supplier, Bridha, provided the most breathtaking champagne and rose gold ballgown, which sparkled in the daylight. We’re in love! 49

VIBRANT LOVE

This showstopping local shoot captures the essence of a love story that defies conventions and celebrates diversity Images courtesy of Fairclough Studios

I

n a dazzling display of creativity and collaboration, the preferred suppliers at Sefton Park Palm House joined forces to craft a vibrant multi-cultural wedding shoot that showcases the seamless fusion of their creative talents. This project brings together a diverse group of wedding professionals to create something amazing. In a heart-warming twist, models Jai and Emily, a real couple, were chosen for the pre-wedding shoot that brought together all their wedding suppliers. Mia from Booker Flowers and Gifts, organised the shoot and provided exquisite floral arrangements; along with Gemma the owner and her team of expert florists who lovingly handcrafted each floral element, ensuring that every detail aligned perfectly with the couple’s vision. The tropical and wildflower theme came to life through vibrant colours, a nod to the couple’s rich cultural backgrounds – Jai’s South Asian heritage and Emily’s traditional English roots. Fairclough Studios then immortalised every moment, capturing the essence of a love story that defies conventions and celebrates diversity. The magical day would not have been possible without the contributions of all suppliers.

How you want your day to feel is a really important factor when nailing your wedding entertainment. If you have visions of serene atmospheres and elegant musical backdrops, then a string quartet, singing guitarist or instrumentalist would be ideal to keep the drinks and chatter flowing. However, if the idea of quiet and understated just isn’t your vibe and everyone must be dancing, singing, non-stop partying and have sore feet in the morning then an awesome folk-pop and indie band is a no-brainer,

ASK THE EXPERTS

HOT TOPIC 2024 hot picks

Our local experts give us the inside track on what to look out for in the world of weddings for 2024 NEXT LEVEL BAKES

Nicola Thomas from Boutique Bakery (www.boutiquebakery.co.uk) says: Wedding cakes in 2024 are going to be all about the flowers! Sugar, wafer paper, and pressed edible flowers are all food safe and have the advantage of being available all year round, so if you love peonies but are getting married in the winter, you can still decorate your cake with sugar versions. Consider too the styling of your cake; meadows of fresh flowers around the table will really elevate it into a show-stopping centrepiece for your day. To take things even further, consider using spacers and separators in the design. These don’t increase the amount of cake you have for you and your guests to eat, so you don’t need to worry about wastage, but do add extra height and drama to the design for a real wow!

STYLE IT OUT Jenny and Claire at Enhance Events (https://enhance-events.com) say: 2024 is set to be a fabulous year for weddings with couples wanting new and exciting design schemes for their big day. We’re seeing a surge in bookings for ceiling décor with floral and foliage chandeliers. Hoops with streamers and fringing with disco balls are also popular choices. Colour-wise its looking like we’ll be seeing polar opposites on the spectrum: vibrant hot pinks and bright oranges with metallic gold and coppers, or neutral, beige and stone hues with black and white. Oversized signage such as giant table plans and hanging-frame welcome signs are popular and photo opportunity walls are a must. Fun areas like this give your guests a great place to take pictures. Shimmer walls are a favourite of ours too, as they’re so effective and available in lots of colours. Tablescaping is a new trend. Think charger plates, luxury table linen, multiple candle holders and more. This allows your photographer to capture a wealth of beautiful detail shots. Sustainability of course is a big consideration for clients. As a company we don’t ever use single-use products, so balloons are a big no for us. We work with fresh flowers and high-quality artificial florals, which we supply on a hire basis. We redesign and reuse the latter for each wedding, saving couples a considerable amount on their floral budget while still looking just as effective. 67

GET CREATIVE

www.stevenmcdonaldphotography.com

Clare Deary from Cake On The Lake (www.cakeonthelake.com) says: Couples getting married in 2024 feel more empowered to ditch traditions and expectations that don’t necessarily align with their personal style. This year, we can expect couples to experiment with bold, metallic colours through customised décor and floral concepts. The 80s are back, and they’re making a big splash in the wedding scene! So, if you’re a fan of bold colours, oversized silhouettes, and a touch of flamboyance, you’re going to love this trend. The decade was all about self-expression and creativity, and this is reflected in the wedding trends of 2024. Think brightly-coloured geometric prints with metallic accents. On the theme of metallics, you can also expect to see cakes adorned with gold leaf, silver accents, or even edible sequins. These details add an instant touch of opulence and elegance to any cake design. Another predicted trend alongside these vibrant hues is textures, just some simple touches to bring the cake to life. Ruffled designs are taking over from the popular naked cake design. Making a comeback with their timeless elegance and subtle shine are pearls. This trend is all about incorporating these precious beauties into various aspects of your wedding decor, including your big-day bake. Let’s not forget about jewellery too – a classic pearl necklace or a pair of pearl earrings can add a touch of sophistication to any bridal look. Finally, get creative with your own married monogram and custom heraldry. We’re seeing monograms and crests on everything, wedding cakes to stationery and napkins, weaving extra personalisation into your big day.

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE Rachel Peers from La Beau Fleurs (www.labeaufleurs.co.uk) says: As our 2024 couples start to get into the detail of their floral design we’re seeing a definite trend for understated elegance coupled with the inclusion of a key statement design. Imagine an opulent archway or dramatic urns filled with an abundance of luxury materials that can be cleverly created to be repurposed throughout the whole of your wedding celebrations. Couples are looking at spending their budget wisely and are opting for a truly memorable floral display that will act as a backdrop to their day while toning down their guest table designs to a smaller more understated version with elegant arrangements in chic, ceramic, footed bowls or a tablescape. We’re also seeing more and more couples opt for floral-only designs using statement blooms that create the wow factor with little fuss. Also set to be popular are timeless florals that will stand the test of time. So, neutral, muted tones or whites with greens will still be super-popular as we head into another fabulous year of weddings. 68

A YEAR FOR ROMANCE Wirral-based jeweller Adrian Catherall (https://adriancatherall.com) says: In terms of wedding-ring style, 2024 is going to be the year of love and romance. With the lessening impact of Covid on all our lives and we’re as back to normality as we can remember, rejoicing in getting engaged and married is definitely coming back 1,000-fold. With this comes elements of colour and rejoicing in styling elements of wedding rings including a myriad of metals. A lot is dictated by the engagement ring though, so people tend to be fixated by the shape and style of the original ring, for example, if it features a round-cut diamond go for a diamond wedding band. Popular styles would be dovetail settings, which is hand engraved into the surface further enhancing the diamonds. The pave set vintage style has always been popular too. While channel set sees the diamonds floating between bars. Alternatively, the up-andcoming tiara style is perfect for those who are more adventurous. There are over a thousand different styles but it usually boils down to a simple few that resonate. Your wedding band shouldn’t look too much like your engagement ring though as what tends to happen is that the two blend too much together and don’t identify themselves individually. You’ll get more value out of something that looks just that little bit different. What I do find is that customers tend to set the trends based on their desires, thoughts and obviously budget. We can then guide them to the best ring within that realm and vision.

SKIN DEEP

Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones reveals his skincare tips for grooms-to-be

O

ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones, to discuss male skincare. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their skin in the run-up to the big day? Research potential products and test them on a small part of your skin a few weeks before the wedding. If everything is good, work out a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising, and try to add in a weekly mask to help get your skin in shape for the big day. Keep to a routine that works for you, and drink plenty of water, as it will help massively. On the big day, use a face spray to refresh the skin in case you get a bit hot and nervous. It’s also good at taking away any oiliness or shine. Do you have a skincare routine you would recommend? I always use a face wash, followed by a clarifying toner, serum and moisturiser. My routine is pretty straightforward, and it suits my skin and its needs. I use the Shakeup Face 4Ward Multi-Action Facial Wash, the brilliant Face 4Ward Pro-Youth Serum, and the trusty Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick. I’m also obsessed with the Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. With a new baby and a Strictly schedule, it’s certainly helping me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep when I haven’t. Throughout the day, I use a moisturiser or

face spray to keep my skin soft and hydrated, and then in the evening, I follow the same process. A couple of nights a week, I like to use the You Do the Mask Purifying Clay Mask from Shakeup to help banish any buildup and blemishes. Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? Well, honestly, this is something I struggled with in the past, as you just want to rest and recover. But now I’m finding that the best way to recover is with active recovery, which means I continue in the gym but with strength and mobility because my body needs to be able to move. I’m a big ice and cold-water therapy fan, as I find it helps with my blood flow, and mental state, so I take regular ice baths and daily cold showers. I’ve also decided to reduce sugar in my life, but I’ll still have the occasional cake or dessert but no soft drinks. I now drink a lot of tea, black and herbal, plus matcha and as much water as I can, but I’ve never really indulged in alcohol or coffee. Eating the right foods gives our body the vital fuel it needs, and knowing what ingredients are in them and asking where they came from is just as important. You can still have a hamburger, but it’s about the quality. People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our skin? Great question, and one I am excited and passionate about. I truly feel that if we eat and

shop more locally, it will have a massive positive impact. I know this is not always possible, but I try to search for a local farm or farmer’s shop, butcher or baker. I’m also looking into how I use my garden because we can grow so much of the food that we use to cook. It’s all about using what we have. Nature provides food in its own protective packaging, so don’t buy it if it’s in extra cellophane. Just one step at a time, day by day, small changes can help. What products couldn’t you live without? Without a doubt, it’s the Shakeup Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick – it’s an essential, and I also can’t live without my Murdock Beard Moisturiser. The new Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream is also a must. It’s helping tackle those eye bags and dark circles I have right now! How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? It’s really hard, but it’s all about discipline, preparation and balance. Plan your meals and prepare them because you can’t make decisions when you’re hungry or tired. Get enough good-quality sleep and spend as much time as you can being happy with loved ones. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? A cold shower! It helps you feel less stressed and brings your blood pressure down. Shakeup products are available from www.shakeupcosmetics.com and www.amazon.co.uk 89

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals HAIR TODAY What hairstyles will be popular with brides in 2024? Jessica Bruce from Jessica Charlotte Bridal Hair (www.jessicacharlottebridalhair.com) says: I think going into 2024 brides are definitely wanting more of a relaxed effortless hairstyle. I’m getting regularly asked for my signature style, half up half down with a twist, or chunky braid. This style has a more relaxed feel but also can be styled in so many different ways. I also have a lot of brides for 2024 asking for a low simple twisted bun adding small pearl pins to finish the look. Veils are definitely a question mark for some brides, and that’s ok. I always say find your dress and hairstyle first and the veil can be added later. But I definitely think hair bows and bow veils will be hot this year!

EXFOLIATE LIKE A PRO!

Faye Purcell, head of research and development at skincare brand Q+A (www.qandaskin.com) says: Exfoliation is brilliant for achieving radiant, fresh, and flake-free skin however, it’s important not to over-exfoliate. How often you do it depends on your skin type but as a rule of thumb, you should exfoliate no more than two to three times per week. A great entry level AHA product for all skin types is the Q+A Glycolic Acid Daily Toner, £8. Containing glycolic acid and hyaluronic acid, it brightens, balances, hydrates and reduces skin congestion in a few swipes. With continued use, it can help to reduce the visible signs of ageing, such as hyperpigmentation. Nobody needs to exfoliate daily but if your skin is dry, you may need to do so just once a week or if oilier you could benefit from exfoliating up to three times a week. I’d suggest using a gentle formula like the Q+A Apple AHA Exfoliating Gel, £8.50, once, or twice a week as it’s highly effective at buffing the skin but is also packed with skin soothing ingredients. Whether you need to exfoliate in the morning or evening depends on the ingredient you’re using. A chemical exfoliator, like an AHA should be used at night, as they can make skin more sensitive to UV rays. The same goes with retinol. Start with a thorough face cleanse to decongest your pores and create a clean canvas, then move on to your chemical exfoliator but always take care to follow the usage instructions. If it’s a toner or a serum, usually there’s no need to wash off. Follow with a barrier-protecting moisturiser. A physical exfoliator can be used in the morning. Work a 10p-sized amount into skin gently in circular motions, so as not to drag or tear. Rinse with warm water and pat skin dry with a towel. Follow with a daily moisturiser, and always apply your SPF. If your skin looks or feels red or irritated, you could have over done it. You may think that harsh, gritty, or strong formulas will work faster giving you quicker results, but they can do more harm than good. As with any skincare, always follow the instructions. If it says leave the product on for one minute and rinse, don’t leave it on for 10! Go low and slow – lower inclusions of exfoliating ingredients gradually introduced into your regime can still have a big impact. When using any exfoliator, it’s vital to use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on a daily basis. Removing the top layer of dead skin cells makes the skin underneath more prone to sun damage so don’t skimp on this important step. 90

Getty Images

I’ve heard that exfoliation is important, particularly at this time of year, but how often do I need to and how do I know if I’ve over done it?

INTERVIEW

SKINCARE 101 with Adele O ’Donoghue

Holistic therapist and SBC Skincare’s head of education shares her ultimate guide to wedding-prep skincare

A

dele O’Donoghue has gained more than 20 years’ experience working in the skincare industry, which for her all began when she trained as a holistic therapist. During her time practising the valuable techniques she learned, she felt a passion to share her practical, relatable and affordable beauty tips, which is just what she gets to do as a regular guest presenter at QVC and TVSN. Plus, as head of education for SBC Skincare she strives to ensure the brand brings relatable conversations to the forefront, ensuring everyone feels understood

and included. So, who better to turn to for advice on handling wedding stress and the toll that can take on your body, as well as on achieving that flawless complexion in time for the big day? Beauty and wellness editor Kelly Andrews quizzed Adele in search of answers. What do you love about SBC, what makes it different? SBC is a small independent British skincare brand that has an exceptional reputation within the industry. We’ve been supplying skincare solutions to the professionals for over 30 years. The trust and reputation we’ve built over that time makes me extremely proud. Every formula is made in small batches in the UK, which gives us complete ingredient traceability and quality control. SBC Skincare remains an affordable, luxurious brand with exceptional customer loyalty built upon results. What are your top skincare tips for our brides-to-be? Wherever possible, begin to take care of your skin and wellbeing sooner rather than later. Don’t make dramatic last-minute changes a few weeks before your wedding that may cause a reaction. Great results don’t rely on one facial the week before your wedding but on consistent care over a longer period until you’re glowing on your day. Try to cut out overly processed foods too. Eat a diet rich in colourful vegetables and fruits, as well as protein, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Great skincare starts from within so eat your skin beautiful. How can holistic therapy help with wedding planning fatigue and stress? Holistic therapy doesn’t have to be complex or reserved for expensive retreats. Simply having an awareness that our everyday rituals including the small habits and thought patterns could have an impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing can improve our stress levels. Taking the time to understand your own personal stress triggers and circumstances can help you to adjust to a demanding lifestyle. Changes to diet and sleep habits will improve energy levels and by prioritising yourself in these ways, your self-worth, mental clarity, and confidence will improve.

Breakouts are a common side effect of stress. How can we prevent and treat these so as not to jeopardise the look of wedding make-up? Try to prevent stress by introducing some self-care practices. Ensure that some of your daily exercise includes mindful stretching and meditation, yoga is always a great choice. If you have time before your wedding, try introducing a retinol into your regime. Considered the gold standard of skin care, retinols accelerate cell turnover to reveal fresher, younger skin cells and decrease congestion. Always apply in the evening followed by a broad-spectrum SPF the following day. Regular facials aren’t always within budget. Can you recommend a daily at-home self-care/skincare regime to perfect the complexion in time for the big day? You can most definitely achieve great results at home, make sure your basic regime is consistent. Always cleanse thoroughly morning and night, apply broad-spectrum SPF during the day and a daily moisturiser regardless of your skin type. Protecting your natural barrier is key to achieving healthy strong skin so look for ceremides, lipids and antioxidants within your skincare formulas. You can upgrade to salon-worthy skin care by introducing a weekly mask. I’d recommend SBC Hydra-Collagen Clay Mask to purify the skin, while combatting fine lines. To quench thirsty skin, apply one of SBC’s Moisturising Gels: Hydra-Collagen, Hyaluronic, or Propolis & White Willow for example. Use a thick layer to tackle specific concerns while hydrating thirsty skin. What are the biggest trends in skincare at the moment and what’s your favourite? I prefer proven results rather than trends, but I’m delighted to see a return to the clean skin aesthetic. I would, however, urge you not to feel under pressure to achieve flawless skin. Remember that your skin is the most incredible vital organ and feeling comfortable within it and learning to love your own is the real success. Enjoying the process of massaging your skin helps to energise and uplift you before your day begins, and think about just how therapeutic a deep cleanse can be at the end of the day. It all helps us to clear our minds and decompress. 95

Can effective skincare have an impact on mood and stress reduction? Feeling comfortable within your skin will affect your mood and stress levels, particularly if you’re suffering with a skin concern such as sensitivity or irritation. Finding a regime that not only suits your skin but brings back radiance and health is essential for your confidence. As we’re in the midst of winter, how can we protect and treat skin for the ravages of the season? Winter brings different challenges to our skin. The most important thing you can do to protect it is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF regardless of the weather. UV rays are around us 365 days a year and UVA rays that are present in light penetrate deeper into the epidermis where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin.Look for skin care containing nourishing and repairing ingredients, such as propolis, rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid to protect and maintain the skin’s natural barrier that may be compromised by harsh winter stresses. Dry and stressed skin can really benefit from the addition of a balm, such as the Propolis & Honey Rescue Balm. Finally, indulge in some winter habits you’ll love! Viva España! Kelly Andrews experiences the finer side of life at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain’s Costa Brava

M

y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...

THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,

which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.

A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW

and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!

on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.

OUT AND ABOUT

TAKE IN THE VIEW

Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant

For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

102

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.
