Happy Ever After

Do you know what I’ve enjoyed most about this issue? Looking at our reader weddings! I always love a good ‘how we got together and how my partner proposed’ story, but in fact it was seeing my couples crease up during their celebrations that really put a smile on my face. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but my word it’s true. Looks fade, but laughter is everlasting, so nothing’s more satisfying than seeing two people who truly love each other have a good old snigger at what could well be the silliest of things; something that no one else will truly get but them.

With this in mind let me turn your attention to the three amazing reader weddings we have in store. Over on page 31 meet Emma and Adrian, who met via Tinder when the groom wooed his wife with a poem. Next, on page 36, say hello to Laura and Mike, who met on another dating site before saying ‘I do’ at Gosfield Hall. Finally, turn to page 43, for proof that holiday romances really do last, courtesy of Andrea and Terry! All that plus the best Essex wedding photographers (p57), unbelievable gowns (p71), honeymoon hotspots (p92) and more!

PS I can’t sign off until I’ve mentioned that this is my last issue as Editor of your favourite regional magazine. I’ve honestly loved every minute, but the time’s come for a change, with me now handing over to the oh-so-capable Rachel Westall to guide you in the right direction for all things Essex wedding. Take care and enjoy the planning, but remember at the end of the day your celebration should be all about you and your intended declaring your forever love to one another.

BRAXTED PARK 01621 770 855 | https://braxtedparkweddings.co.uk

Pure Pride & Prejudice outside – a tree-lined drive and view of the Georgian mansion standing proud – immaculate décor and superb facilities inside, Braxted Park marries the romance of the old with the best of the new to create the perfect venue for your 21st-century wedding.

The Orangery at Braxted Park is no ordinary setting for your ceremony of up to 160 loved ones. In this bright and airy exquisitely decorated room, boasting hand-painted murals and wonderful views over the garden, you have the luxury of a space large enough for family and friends to surround you and an aisle generous enough for the most gorgeous of gowns.

For al fresco nuptials, behind mellow brick walls lies the Knott Garden perfect for romantic gatherings of up to 160. As beautiful as any bridal bouquet with secluded nooks and delightful surprises around every corner, it enfolds all who enter in an enchanted circle of love.

Nestled so naturally within the walled garden, the Pavilion was designed to delight. Windows and doorways link it seamlessly with outdoor terraces and the green spaces beyond, while inside is contemporary comfort and state-of-the-art facilities. Yours for the whole day and into the night, the Pavilion can be whatever you want it to be with up to 350 loved ones.

You couldn’t get more local to Braintree than the Town Hall itself! Dating back to 1927, Braintree Town Hall provides a memorable setting for weddings. Originally a gift to the town from the Courtauld family, this impressive Georgian building boasts beautiful windows and detailing, all in the heart of the town centre.

Inside, have photos taken on the sweeping staircase, before admiring

the crafted stone pillars, yet another ideal backdrop for beautiful pictures. Ceremonies take place in the Lounge Room, for small intimate gatherings of up to 36 guests, and the Council Chamber, a beautiful oak panelled room with hand-painted murals for ceremonies of up to 70. Post-vows, additional rooms are available to hire for post drinks receptions.

Psst!

Braintree Town Hall is running a winter offer of 20% off their Courtauld Package, which is to be booked and taken by 31st March, 2023.

This beautiful Georgian house, located around 10 miles from the town centre, offers a stunning backdrop to a marquee or tipi wedding. Picture large lawns, surrounded by paddocks with grazing horses, and you’re on the right track. It even has a picturesque lake for photo opportunities and a cosy ‘brew house’; a Victorian summer house complete with open fire

for your guests to retire to.

Although not currently licensed for ceremonies, a blessing can be included in the hire of the grounds – and there’s also a quaint Norman church within walking distance for you to say ‘I do’ in, should you want a religious ceremony. Afterwards, enjoy your reception in the marquee for up to 200 guests. What’s more, the venue is exclusively yours on the week leading up to and on your wedding day, with a coordinator on hand to help with all your preparations.

Overlooking the formal lakes and with impressive views of a world-class arboretum, the stunning 18th century Coach House sits in the heart of Markshall’s landscape. With historic red bricks, rustic beams and beautiful details, it makes the most romantic setting for a wedding. Teamed with delicate fairy lights, this space is the perfect blank canvas for achieving all

your wedding dreams. Say your vows in the secluded hedges of the Flower Garden, which can seat 140 during the day and 200 for evening celebrations. Or why not choose to marry under a canopy of beautiful trees in Markshall’s ancient woodlands in front of 150 guests? There are also two reception venues on the estate, with the Coach House being ideal for 200 friends and family. Instead, party the night away in a private Tipi, situated in the picturesque Brick House Farm Meadow.

Located in a 16th century wood-beamed property, this restaurant, only 10 miles from Braintree, has been transformed into an award-winning location with a license for weddings and civil ceremonies. Providing stunning views across the Essex countryside from its outside decking area

and sun terrace, inside you’ll discover luxurious and opulent décor.

The Pig & Whistle can accommodate 30 guests with a choice of spaces. Choose either its traditional room with wooden floor and beamed ceilings, or the dining room; decorated with dressers and opulent drapes. You can then host a reception for 30 guests for a wedding breakfast in either area, before inviting an additional 40 for an evening reception with space for celebrating into the night.

TINDER LOVING

care

Emma and Adrian met via the dating site Tinder. “Adrian was the first to message,” remembers the bride. “He sent me a poem, which I thought was really sweet, and we met up a week later. There were no awkward silences, and it felt like we’d known each other for years. We also got each other’s sense of humour, and our connection felt unbelievably natural.”

Adrian originally wanted to pop the question on a trip to Japan, but Covid meant their holiday got cancelled. “With his proposal plans thwarted, he instead asked me to marry him at the park where we had our first date. However, it didn’t exactly go to plan, as I managed to fall out of the front door as we were leaving the house – and broke my ankle! It really hurt at the time, but I didn’t realise how bad it was, so insisted I was OK. We went to the park where Adrian got down on one knee, but we never managed to celebrate, as the pain got worse and worse – so we ended up in A&E!”

The couple chose the 4th February, 2022 for their wedding, saying ‘I do’ at Parklands Quendon Hall. Here, Emma tells us all about their incredible day…

31 REAL WEDDINGS

We walked into the wedding venue and I was blown away. I can’t put into words how perfect it was – it was everything we wanted and more!

We wanted favours that people would enjoy and not leave on the table. We’re both huge chocolate and sweet fans, so planned favours around this. It was a huge success, especially with the kids!

Our centrepieces were made by our amazing florist, featuring gold stands to match our colour scheme and flowers that matched my bouquet. We also had hanging tea lights, which added to the wintry feel.

I made the table plan myself, finding a mirror at a boot sale and spraying it gold. I then learnt how to do calligraphy for the guests’ names.

I left the choice of flowers up to my florist, simply telling her our colour scheme and theme. I also asked her to include sunflowers at the back of my bouquet, in remembrance of a family member.

We had a three tiered cake – which I very nearly knocked over by accidentally cutting into the plastic supports holding it up!

32

I wore two wedding dresses. My first was a Mark Lesley design with a wow train, detailed back and long sleeves. I accessorised this with a cathedral length veil, hair pins and statement hoops.

I made our table names, using photos of us as children. These were a real hit, as many guests remembered the photo being taken.

Once our evening guests arrived, I changed into a tea length, off the shoulder dress for more of a party feel. I also wore customised Converse, sparkly belt and earrings.

There were a few moments we had to laugh at throughout the day. I got caught to my dress while trying to put Adrian’s ring on – plus my dress was too long for the first dance!

The groomsmen wore the same as my husband, but instead opted for burgundy ties. They also wore slightly smaller buttonholes than Adrian.

Adrian looked incredibly handsome in his navy suit, which he teamed with a grey waistcoat and dark blue tie.

My bridesmaids wore velvet burgundy dresses with sleeves, and were exactly what I envisioned for our winter wedding. They also had gold shoes to match our colour scheme.

33 REAL WEDDINGS

Our photographer was so friendly – everyone loved him! So many people commented how good he was with the children, and the fact he made everyone smile. I’ll never forget walking down the aisle. I saw Adrian welling up, plus all our family and friends smiling and crying. There was so much love in the room, and it was an amazing feeling.

Our videographer went above and beyond the call of duty. He brought me snacks, calmed me when I was anxious, and even sorted a hot water bottle when I wasn’t feeling well. I cannot thank him enough.

ADRIAN’S

We were both on such a high throughout the day and night. I said to Adrian afterwards that it was literally the happiest day of my life – and I can still remember the feeling now!

TAKE THE

Mike

36
Laura and Mike ensured no expense was spared at their Gosfield Hall celebration Images courtesy of Neil Bailey Photography

Lauramet Mike on dating site Elite Singles. “It’s hard to envisage how we could have met any other way, seeing as we were both so busy with our jobs,” says Laura. “After a few weeks sending messages we had our first date in a pub. Mike was every bit the charming, charismatic gentleman – plus he was tall, dark and handsome, so I was on to a winner! The banter flowed easily, plus we both love animals, which was a big bonus as I’m a veterinary nurse. It was clear from that first date that this was something special.”

Mike proposed to Laura a little over two years later. “In that time I’d given birth to our son, Mikey, which was incredibly emotional as he was two months premature. He spent two weeks in intensive care, with Mike spending every night sleeping on the floor beside my hospital bed. We settled into family life just as Covid hit, taking this time to find our first family home. On the day of the move, we arrived to collect the keys from the previous owners, who’d kindly ‘left’ us some Champagne cooling. They made a very swift exit, just in time for me to turn around and see Mike on one knee, asking me to be his wife. Virtually everyone was in on it but me!”

The couple set the date for the 5th August, 2022, choosing Gosfield Hall for their big day. Here, Laura tells us more about their amazing wedding…

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

It was important for the couple that their wedding venue was easily accessible for all of their guests. “With family spanning from Surrey and London to Kent, we narrowed our search to Essex to give everyone equal travel distance,” continues the bride. “We knew we wanted somewhere that would allow us exclusive use, where we could hold the ceremony and reception, and a venue that oozed character, elegance and class. Gosfield Hall ticked all of those boxes! It’s a stunning building with a multitude of character in every corner, from the impressive high painted ceilings to the grand staircase. The beautiful courtyard and grounds are incredible, as is the immensely regal bridal suite. If there was ever going to be a place that you could embrace your special day and feel like a princess, then in my opinion it could only be here!”

When it came to a theme Laura and Mike decided to complement the natural décor of Gosfield Hall. “We wanted to capture the elegant vibe of the venue, with a subtle edge of simplicity, opting for ivory and gold tones, along with hints of blue for Mike and Mikey’s suits, as well as the bridesmaids’ gowns. In my head I envisaged an iconic Wedgwood pottery blue, going on a hunt to source fabric samples of a suitable colour. This was not easy! Luckily, I had the team at Gosfield to help source lots of suppliers, including an amazing venue dresser. I cannot recommend JF Styling enough! They arranged the venue exactly the way I wanted, putting together ideas and showing me how different options could work. They were completely on board with keeping the ivory and gold theme with the chic elegant feel, too.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL

Theme set in place, the couple set to work deciding how they wanted to accessorise the venue to suit their vision. “For our signage, we opted for gold framed vintage-style mirrors, with vinyl decals for our welcome sign and table plan,” says Laura. “For the ceremony, we used the venue’s gold Chiavari chairs, dressed with interwoven ivory voile. We kept the aisle bare to expose the natural stone flooring, and had fresh white rose petals lining the edges by our florist. We also used clear Perspex plinths, which housed a large gold candelabra with ivory candles and beautiful artificial displays of cream and white flowers. Post-ceremony, the chairs were used for the wedding breakfast, and the candelabras became our centre pieces, with a couple of extras.”

Decorating the tables with carefully thought out detail was also key to the couple’s big day. “As a finishing touch we opted for gold beaded charger plates for each setting, as well as gold-rimmed glasses and gold-tipped cutlery,” continues Laura. “We used a simple folded blue napkin and had our name places laser engraved on to gold mirrored coasters for guests to keep. We opted to not have formal favours at the tables, and supplied sticker books, bubbles and small toys for the children that attended instead. It was also important for us not to have a gift list for friends and family, instead asking for donations for the charity, Bliss, who looked after our son when he was born. We did this via a JustGiving page, and have become one of the biggest fundraisers of the year to date.”

TWO’S COMPANY

Laura couldn’t decide on one wedding dress – so went for two! “My first gown was the Courtney design by Pronovias, which I teamed with a cathedral-length veil and floral hair pins that matched the detailing in the back of the dress,” says the bride. “After the wedding breakfast I changed into a second gown, the Alanis from the Enzoani Love collection. This was a sexy version of the ceremony dress, if ever there was one! My hair and make-up artist stayed on site until after I had changed, and was able to glam up my make-up for a more evening party feel. I also changed my hairstyle to a more relaxed Hollywood curl ’do, with a Swarovski clip to one side. I completed my look with an aquamarine single stone necklace and bracelet from Tiffany’s, and had a ring made to wear on my right hand which encapsulated some fur from our late dog, in a sapphire blue resin as my something blue.”

Laura had long dreamt of being able to say, ‘I Choo’, having looked at a pair of Jimmy Choos online for months. “They were aptly called Josefine, similar to our daughter’s name, so it felt like fate,” continues the bride. “The only problem was that they were permanently out of stock in my size! In the end I bought two pairs of shoes from Dune, with a heeled style for the day and a flat version for the evening. Mike, however, being the true gentleman that I’d met four years earlier, was not going to let me have our big day without my shoes, presenting me one evening with the very last pair of Josefines in the country, which he’d sourced from Jimmy Choo in Manchester. The only condition was that I wore them solely for our ceremony, and that they were to then be put away to hand down to our daughter, Josephine, one day.”

ALL DRESSED UP

The rest of the wedding party looked equally as stunning, with Laura’s older bridesmaids in pale blue Finley gowns from Tiffanys. “The dresses had a knee-length split and small spaghetti straps with additional Bardot sleeves and sweetheart necklines with diamanté waistband,” says Laura. “A more age-appropriate junior version of the dress was made for our junior bridesmaid, and I also had my daughter and niece as flower girls.

As they were both only eight months old, they wore custom-made ivory dresses with satin top, lace bottom and large bow to the back, with floral hair bands.”

Mike, meanwhile, went to Savile Row for his bespoke three-piece suit. “Pale blue in colour, it had a personalised lining as well as matching monograms on the cuffs of his shirt. His tie and pocket square were also custom-made, monogrammed in Wedgewood blue by Mrs Bow Tie; while his tie clip displayed the date of our wedding in Roman numerals. He even had sterling silver collar stiffeners with each of our children’s names on, all of which was complemented with a brown pair of Christian Louboutin Greggos, plus matching belt.”

The couple’s son, Mikey, stood in as best man, wearing a bespoke suit to match his dad’s. “Both of our fathers and Mike’s best friend, Martin, were groomsmen, wearing plain navy blue suits with matching Wedgwood blue ties. They stood in to make the speech on behalf of our son – which saved our guests hearing how many cars Mikey had seen! Martin’s speech was fantastic, capturing moments we’ve had in Mikey’s lifetime, but told through our little boy’s eyes. It was so fitting for the cheeky little monster sat next to his dad at the top table!”

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY

Ensuring their guests’ glasses were topped up was important to Laura and Mike’s day. “Gosfield Hall boasts a well-equipped bar for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, while we also selected red, white and rose wine to be served throughout the wedding breakfast,” says Laura. “We also had a plentiful supply of our favourite Champagne for toasts and speeches, which was then set up after the ceremony as a Champagne serving station, for guests to go and get a top-up as they liked. Being a summer wedding, and with most guests enjoying the outside space, this was later changed into a tea, coffee and hot chocolate station, to warm everyone up.”

At the bottom of the stairs stood the couple’s wedding cake, a four-tier creation covered in Wedgwood blue icing and decorated with intricate gold vine, along with sugar crafted leaves and ivory sugar flowers.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

“Our base tier was white chocolate and raspberry, followed by a tier of cookies and cream,” says Laura. “The third was a controversial walnut and buttercream, without the coffee – much to Mike’s horror – and the top a vegan-friendly chocolate cake. The results spoke for themselves, as a cake of this size should have fed around 180 guests – and there was barely a crumb left from the 67 guests that attended!”

Laura and Mike even made sure that friends and family who stayed at Gosfield were well catered for. “We decided that rather than having table favours we’d have food hampers in each guest room,” continues the bride. “We gave them a selection of fresh sandwiches and wraps as well as cakes and sweet nibbles, which were supplied by the venue. We coupled them up with personalised cards for each room, thanking them for joining us for our celebration. Some had travelled a fair distance to be with us, so we felt this was a nice touch.”

FACE THE MUSIC

When it came to music, the couple decided on a string quartet to greet guests for the ceremony and while they found their seats. “They also played a classical version of Simply the Best when I walked down the aisle,” said Laura. “They then gave our guests, and Mike, the treat of playing The Imperial March from Star Wars as we exited the ceremony. Mike is an avid fan, so it got a fair few laughs!”

There was plenty of other entertainment for the guests of Mr and Mrs Gallagher to enjoy. “We hired a live painter, who started her work prior to the ceremony,” says the bride. “Over the course of six hours she produced an amazing painting on canvas of us saying our vows. It was great to see our guests watch her work, many of whom stood talking to her throughout the day waiting to see the finished result. It has given us the most perfect piece of artwork to remember our day.”

The couple also hired an interactive magic mirror photo booth – and mini crazy golf on the lawn. “The photo booth was a lot fun, and our guests were given a copy of each photo to take home. We were also gifted a little album of all of the photos to keep, which was a nice touch. The mini golf was also a great hit, especially with Mike and his closest friends, who hold a friendly golf tournament every year. Sadly, walking around in heels with a train and veil meant I was at a major disadvantage – I did not score well compared to my new husband!”

The couple’s night was intended to go out with a bang thanks to an incredible firework display, however, due to the extreme heat it was deemed that the venue’s grounds were too dry to safely go ahead. “Instead we had a sparkler exit in the courtyard, which captured some great photos of us spelling out ‘love’ with the sparklers,” says the bride. “It’s a moment we’ll remember forever.”

GREECE IS

the word

Andrea met Terry on the Greek island of Santorini. “We were on a tour of the village of Oia, and I wandered off and got a little lost,” says Andrea. “Luckily I spotted Terry, who’s 6ft 5”, above everyone else in the crowds. After a little small talk, I started ranting about the various contractors who were working on my house – only to discover Terry qualified as an electrician in his early career! We then had a fun and feisty discussion, with Terry deciding he needed to re-educate me that not all contractors can’t be trusted!”

Terry popped the question on a rainy trip to the beach. “He drove us to St Lawrence Bay where The Wade joins it, insisting on taking his backpack, which he often does when we go walking,” continues the bride. “Being nervous, he

got lost, and being a man wouldn’t ask a local the way – so I had to! When we got there, Terry suggested we look out to sea, before he knelt down and started fiddling with his bag. Suddenly, I felt a tug on my jacket and heard Terry say, ‘While I’m down here…’. I turned to see him holding a heart-shaped ring box, and when he asked me to marry him I was so lost for words I started to cry. The ring box contained a plumber’s olive, along with the words ‘IOU’, as he was brave enough to propose, but wise enough to not choose my ring!”

The couple married on the 30th April, 2022, choosing Layer Marney Tower for their venue. Here, Andrea tells us more about their day…

43 REAL WEDDINGS

We opted for a three-tier cake, in Sicilian lemon sponge, red velvet and Biscoff flavours. It was decorated with the famous white domed, blue-topped buildings of Oia, where I met Terry.

I found my dream gown at Silver End’s Barn Bridal Boutique. When I tried it on even the owner, Jane, shed a few tears! I used a seamstress to alter the neckline, as well as adding diamantes on the waist to add sparkle – and look a little sexier for my husband on our big day!

We wanted Terry and the groomsmen to look smart, but also to feel comfortable, choosing navy suits, green silk ties, sage green and cream checked waistcoats, and brown leather shoes.

Our flowers were gorgeous, in particular my handtied bouquet of ivory roses and peonies. The day after our wedding we went to the family plot in the village cemetery, laying the flowers there. We hired ‘Mr & Mrs Wade’ LED letters from Fairytale Finishes, who we can’t recommend enough. The letters made a showstopper in the evening when guests went into the barn.
44
When we first viewed Layer Marney it was wet and cold, but despite the weather we gasped as we moved from room to room! The stained-glass windows, huge fireplace and murals of the Long Gallery are stunning.

My bridesmaids wore sage green dresses, which were all made to their individual sizes. They chose their own styles, which was important to me as it was their special day, too.

My hair was styled in loose curls, teaming with a crystal comb to replace the veil taken out after the wedding breakfast. For my make-up, I opted for soft gold and brown shadow to complement my green eyes.

I had my heart set on a vintage car, with Layer Marney sourcing a 1929 Landis Lambda for me. I felt so special driving to the venue with my dad, with people waving at us as we drove through the villages and country lanes.

I didn’t want my bridesmaids and mum to feel left out when it came to transport, so also found them a VW camper van to journey in. They were delighted when they saw it!

Our guests enjoyed burgers, wraps and chips for the evening food, served from the caterer’s Citroën HY van. It was great to have something to soak up the alcohol!

Our magician was also our toastmaster – and he was amazing at both roles. His magic is incredible, and Terry and I still don’t know how he managed his bottle of wine trick!

45 REAL WEDDINGS

We also had a spectacular fireworks display. Our guests loved them – as did the neighbouring village, who we learnt were in awe of what they got to enjoy for free!

I had to laugh at some of the funny positions David, our photographer, got himself in to get those all-important shots. He really listened to our wants and needs and understood us as a couple.

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day.

You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

FILE Style

Want to wow your wedding crowd with a venue styled to perfection? These Essex businesses are here to help

GET STYLISH WITH FLOWERS

“We’re seeing many couples opt for loose, more natural blooms,” says Kelleyann Phythian from Wethersfield’s Honeysuckle Flowers. “Roses, hydrangeas and peonies remain popular; however, couples now want seasonal and locally-sourced, too. For a wow factor you can’t beat a large flower arch above the ceremony doors. Aisle meadows, flowers placed on either side of the aisle, draw guests’ eyes along a sea of blooms leading to the altar or ceremony table. If having round tables at your reception, use tall table displays with tumbling flowers and foliage for drama. If using long tables, one continuous centre arrangement with repeating blooms adds an opulent feel.”

GET STYLISH WITH DECORATIONS

“Boho is still a big wedding trend, evolving recently towards geometric party props and retro shapes,” says Laura Celiz from Braintree’s Rock The Day. “Pampas grass and dried florals are key to this look, with the gorgeous fusion of bespoke elements and natural materials proving very popular. Carefully selected theme and party props can make or break this trend, with boho-style dome shaped backdrops in warm earthy colours, as well as wicker and bamboo lampshades, dyed muslin drapes and runners. The flowy and free-spirited boho decorations, used with an emphasis on organic elements and nature, make it a favourite for many.”

DO “Stick to your theme and colour palette.”

DON’T “Do too much. Remember: sometime less is more.”

CONTACT www.rocktheday.co.uk

DO “Be honest about your budget, so your florist can design your flower package accordingly. There are ways to save money, such as faux flowers and reusing displays.”

DON’T “Waste money decorating areas that won’t be seen much. Nobody needs a flower on their napkin.”

GET STYLISH WITH TABLES & CHAIRS

“We’re seeing a comeback in chair bows,” says Oznur Ozdemir from Harlow’s Mediterranean Occasions. “Vertical draping with flowers to the back of chairs are also popular. As well as classic ivory and sage green, we’re beginning to see a pattern of sought after colours for centrepieces on tables, with bright and bold hues. Couples are becoming more conscious about sustainability, so are looking into silk florals and biodegradable petals. Whatever you choose, it’s very much a case of ‘go big or go home’, as opposed to anything minimalistic. Couples tell us they want their wedding day photos to be Insta-worthy, for others to use as inspiration.”

DO “Get ideas and inspiration from social media and take these with you to your styling appointment.”

DON’T “Leave styling to the last minute, as rushing decisions can end up with you regretting the choices you’ve made.”

CONTACT www.mediterraneanoccasions.co.uk

GET STYLISH WITH DRINKS

“Hiring a mobile bar, such as our horsebox, is a great way to style up your venue, in addition to ensuring guests don’t go thirsty,” says Jodi Linger from Billericay’s Full of Fizz. “Cocktails are now more popular than prosecco, with many couples asking for a dedicated cocktail hour during their day. We’re also asked to personalise drinks to represent the newlyweds, and like to use a few quirky signs to dress the bars, as they’re always fun. We recently attended a wedding where the bridesmaids’ dresses were red, so made sure that two of the cocktails were also red. It’s these little touches that go a long way – and look great in your photos!”

DO “Let your wedding planner know that they can put some of their own wedding flowers or decor on our bars. We’re always open to ideas and want our bars to look amazing for you.”

DON’T “Think too big when it comes to signs for drinks. Smaller is actually better, as you don’t want anything that takes up too much room.”

CONTACT https://fulloffizz.com

GET STYLISH WITH FOOD

“The individual charcuterie cup is popular for wedding receptions,” says Samantha Zive from Ingatestone’s Fig & Feast. “These cups or cones have a few pieces of cheese, a little cured meat, olives and crackers; just enough to keep your guests going before the wedding breakfast. Food, of course, plays a huge part in any wedding, and visually a grazing table will always turn heads at your celebration. From the colour of the food, to the scent of the foliage used to dress your spread, friends and family can pick on cured meats, artisan cheeses, locally-sourced fresh bread, honeycomb, figs, fresh fruit and other delicious treats.”

DO “Pick a spread to match the time of your wedding. Why not offer a brunch table, laden with pastries, bagels, fruit, yoghurt and granola, if saying ‘I do’ earlier in the day?”

DON’T “Opt for a bog-standard evening buffet – it’s most definitely a thing of the past!”

GET STYLISH WITH LIGHTING

“We’re seeing an increased number of weddings in marquees, so fairy lights and festoon lighting outside is becoming popular,” says Michelle Broom from Kirby Cross-based Occasions and Celebrations. “Our favourite form of lighting for any wedding has to be our Sparkle Package, which includes a light up LED dance floor, light up letters and starlight backdrop, to give you that perfect combination of sparkling lights that ‘wow’ your guests. The starlight backdrop creates the perfect staging for your ceremony and top table; the dance floor gives your guests a place to head to; and the light up letters create the perfect spot for those social media snapshot moments!”

DO “Choose lighting that directs guests to your dancing area. If not, you have the danger of people sitting or standing in separate areas, resulting in you losing that party atmosphere.”

DON’T “Mix colours of lights, for example warm with ice, as it looks messy and unfinished.”

CONTACT www.occasionsweddingflowers.co.uk

GET STYLISH WITH SIGNS

“Mirrors and metallics are trending for wedding signage, as well as more personal touches,” says Emma Fews from Witham’s Elf Occasions. “Couples also like ideas personal to themselves, such as theming their guest tables, rather than having table numbers. Whether it’s locations of places they’ve been to on holiday together, or names to match the theme of the couple’s wedding, personalisation always adds a lovely touch. Just be sure to choose the right signs for your venue and the style of wedding you want, being consistent throughout. If you’re having a rustic wedding, choose wooden signs and table plans to match. If it’s an elegant theme, opt for mirrored and metallic table plans and signs.”

DO “Get your photographer to capture a snap of you both in the reflection of any mirror sign –it makes a lovely picture!”

DON’T “Forget to tell your venue if naming rather than numbering tables. That way they can incorporate this into your floorplan to ensure all the tables are set correctly.”

CONTACT www.elfoccasions.co.uk

GET STYLISH WITH FINISHING TOUCHES

“Consider little extras that guests may not have thought about when it comes to your big day,” says Hayley Bunting from Brentwood’s Hayley Jayne Weddings & Events. “Display milk churns full of umbrellas if it’s looking like rain, or paper fans if the weather will be warm. Wicker baskets with packets of tissues are great for family members who may shed a tear, as are bathroom hampers packed with useful items for throughout the day. Have mini organza bags of confetti readily at hand, consider a camera for Polaroid shots, and don’t forget about that box of flip flops for tired feet, when ladies want to hit the dance floor but can’t cope with their heels any longer!”

DO “Consider candlelight if allowed. Pillar candles style your aisle, while tealight holders positioned on your cake table and bar also look beautiful.”

DON’T “Over-style. Instead, choose a small number of additional styling elements and do them well.”

DOT TO DOT

The Utan Pen is the viral TikTok freckle pen that Sophie Habboo and Melissa Tattum are raving about. While many of you may long for a glowy sun-kissed look for your big day, the damage UV rays can cause the skin is something we’re only too aware of. However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. The formula is even water-resistant and sweat proof, lasting up to 48 hours, so whatever the wedding day throws at you, your super-cute freckles will remain perfectly in place.

HEMP, HEMP HOORAY!

Only around three per cent of polypropylene plastic, the material synthetic eyelashes are made from, can be recycled and takes 20 to 30 years to decompose. Using plant-based innovation, Velour’s 100 per cent vegan and cruelty-free plant fibre lash collection, thought to be the first of its kind, is derived entirely from hemp.

Blending beautifully with natural lashes, Velour Plant Fibre Lashes have been handmade for a fine, fluttery and wispy hair-like texture with a natural matte finish, ideal for enhancing bridal make-up looks. They sit on a lightweight thin black full-length cotton band for all-day comfort. Now you can bat your lashes at your soon-to-be spouse as they wait for you at the end of the aisle without impacting the planet.

AQUA(WO)MAN

The latest fragrance from perfumer Juliet Has A Gun, Ego Straits, is an original aquatic cologne with a refreshing and energising citrus top note cocktail, laying on a long-lasting marine heart. The result is a contemporary, almost unisex, women’s fragrance, an ode to gender fluidity.

The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

MAID FOR EACH OTHER

How do I know what make-up my bridesmaids should wear if they all have different hair colours and skin tones?

Just like with the bridal look itself, the make-up your bridesmaids will wear is going to be in the spotlight for the whole day. Of course, you want everyone to look their best without anyone feeling odd or not fitting in, so I find that the following steps take away the stress of finding that perfect balance.

Start by creating a mood board with looks you all like, to help know what type of make-up everyone is into, so that you can start eliminating styles that don’t fit. Next, consult with your make-up artist to create looks that work together. I never copy and paste a look, because each

UPPER CLASS

I want a classic, timeless hairstyle for my big day. What do you suggest?

When picking the perfect look for your wedding, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, your wedding dress and neckline, as your hair should complement your dress, and not compete with it. It’s also important to look and feel comfortable on the day, ensuring you’re the most radiant version of you, while enhancing your natural beauty. I’d suggest keeping your hair simple, opting for something that suits your own face shape and hairline, be that a blowdry, Hollywood waves or boho braids. Alternatively, if your hair’s long enough you can’t go wrong with a simple chignon. Whether high, low, to the side, sleek or voluminous, there’s a chignon to suit everyone. You could even opt for some hair accessories such as combs, fresh flowers, crowns or a simple head band – or just enjoy the finished look with or without a veil.

face is unique, and everyone will suit something slightly different. Try to stick to the same colour scheme, and avoid trends, aiming for classic instead. Remember that you as the bride should take centre stage, so ask the bridal pro to tone everyone else’s make-up down by one step, either skipping eyeliner or using slightly lighter eyeshadow. Finally, communicate! Any reputable make-up artist will be there to help you look and feel your best, so even if you’ve done all of the above and still feel anxious, please tell us. We know how to help.

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA

Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it. One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com

GRACE LOVES LACE

Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”

Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”

The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.” https://graceloveslace.co.uk

VERA WANG BRIDE

Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.

Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.

Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”

In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32).

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.

Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com

ANDREA HAWKES

British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”

Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come.

Essex suppliers in the know solve your wedding dilemmas

QUESTION TIME

What kind of questions should we ask wedding venues when being shown around?

The most obvious is to check capacity, making sure the rooms you want to use can hold all the guests you need them to. Ceremony licensing is another key question if you’re looking for a legal ceremony on site. You should therefore check this is something a prospective venue can offer, as not all have a ceremony license. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use the venue, but you may have to sign the legal documents on another

occasion, or have a celebrant conduct a ceremony for you at the venue. It’s also worth asking if there are any additional costs, as some venues charge clean up or rubbish disposal fees. You don’t want to be sweeping up or taking rubbish home after your wedding day! Finally, be sure to ask if there’s a coordinator/manager on the day to make sure everything happens smoothly, as worrying about timings on your wedding day shouldn’t be your concern.

Nicola Denny, St Osyth Priory www.stosythpriory.com/weddings-conferance

A BIT CHEESEY

We really want a cheese wedding cake for our big day, but as it’s going to be held in August we’re worried about it collapsing due to the heat. Can we still have one?

This is a really common question, but the answer is simple: as long as the cheese is kept out of direct sunlight or heat, it can be brought out up to an hour before serving and it’ll be the perfect temperature. It’s fair to say that hard cheeses will always handle a warm day better than a soft cheese, but there’s no reason not to include your favourite bloomy brie or creamy blue in your dream wedding cheese cake.

As with traditional cake makers, there are also a few tips and tricks which can be used to ensure the structural integrity of your cake, such as bases and cake dowls, hidden from view but that keep your cake looking beautiful for your guests!

Once you’ve cut into your cake, you can move the layers onto their own platter, so that guests can tuck into each cheese, keeping your display looking gorgeous.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Our big day is approaching, and we’re thinking of booking a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips?

The first and most important thing when looking for a videographer is to research whether they have a good reputation. You can do this by looking at their social media pages, and reading the reviews clients have left.

Secondly, you must love their work. Like photographers, videographers all have their own style, so make sure they have plenty of examples on their website and social pages. Don’t just watch one – watch a few, including one filmed at your venue, if available.

Like the photographer, you will both spend more time with them than any other person on the day, so it’s so important you feel comfortable with them. Having a sit down, face-to-face meeting is therefore a good idea, so that when the day comes you’re already friends.

Last of all, think budget – if you can afford a videographer go for it, as it’s the most common ‘I wish I had’ I hear from couples after the event. You won’t regret it! There’s no photo or friend’s phone that can capture all the magic of your big day.

SWEETS FOR MY SWEET

My partner has an incredibly sweet tooth – and so does all his family! What kind of treats should we consider for our evening reception?

We can offer several different tasty sweet options for your celebration. For a start, we have our full-size sweet candy cart, which is a proper wheel cart that rolls on its own wheels. This is supplied with 10 different sweets from the pic’ n’ mix range, giving you between seven to 10 kilos of sweets!

Alternatively, if your space is a little bit tighter, you may like our sweet Ferris wheel, which can be placed on a table and stands over three feet tall. With 16 large trays, it’s again supplied with 10 different sweets up to the same weight as the candy cart.

Chocoholic? Why not opt for our sweet chocolate box, which has nine compartments and can be filled with a variety of wrapped chocolate sweets? Or go completely different and hire our stunning ice cream tricycle, with six different ice cream flavours of your choice, plus sugar waffle cones and a side table with sauces and sprinkles. MAKE THE MOST OF IT

We’ve been told by many of our married friends that the day goes too quickly, meaning you don’t get the chance to properly talk to your guests. What do you advise?

Why not choose a venue like ours, one that provides a ‘one stop shop’ and is ideal for friends and family coming from afar? With everything under one roof, this enables guests to focus on the big day itself, rather than concerns of travelling distance and traffic. With family rooms and a popular swimming pool within our Lifestyle Leisure Club, many opt to make a weekend of it. Licensed for ceremonies, you can tie the knot on the premises, then enjoy al fresco drinks on our picturesque patio, followed by a delicious wedding breakfast. We’ve even worked with our resident DJ for over 20 years, so it’s safe to say you’ll receive a professional service from an expert who will contact you beforehand to discuss your preferences. This means when your big day arrives, all you need to do is turn up and enjoy!

HONEYMOON NEWS 93

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

94
Sarah Gallivan samples a taste of the Mediterranean on the dreamy island of Crete

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.
