A fairytale escape at Ballygally Castle in Northern Ireland

https://victoriaweltonphotography.com

With the cost of living crisis having an impact on all our lives, nearlyweds are looking to celebrate in style while getting the most from their budget. One way to do this is to choose ceremony decorations that can be repurposed for the reception. Claire and Tom’s gorgeous moon arch served both as ceremony and top table backdrop on their big day.

Speaking of 2023 trends here’s one of our own tips for the top! With sustainability a topic on many a couple’s lips nowadays, dried flowers are becoming popular. Bride Sammy was surprised to find them in a vibrant enough palette to fit her vision.

PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES

Easton Social Dancing offers a free, zero obligation, 45-minute wedding dance consultation. Keen to know more, we chatted to experienced teacher Tannith Perry...

What can couples expect from their free consultation?

We’ll discuss the various things you need to consider: music, style of dance, how your dress could impact your dance, the venue and more. Then, based on these factors we’ll start learning one or more styles of dance.

What do you teach your couples?

There are many different approaches to the first dance. Some of my past clients wanted to wow their guests by performing a choreographed routine, others wanted the ability to dance to their favourite song with a simple grace and ease. Learning some basic patterns and lead and follow techniques takes a huge amount of stress off of both partners so you can enjoy your special moment without anxiety as well as leaving a lasting impression on your family and friends.

What do couples need to think about when preparing their dream dance?

A LANDMARK YEAR

As Bristol marks its 650th anniversary of becoming a city and county in 2023 with major celebrations in the pipeline, this year sees a whole host of vibrant, world-renowned festivals and events. Here are some of our highlights to look out for:

We the Curious is reopening

We the Curious science museum and wedding venue was forced to close in April 2022 following a devastating fire on its roof. Repairs to resulting water damage are under way and the plan is to reopen in 2023. Brimming with exhibits to inspire and home to the UK’s only 3D planetarium, this is the place to ask questions and get creative.

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, 10th-13th August Europe’s largest hot air balloon event will once again stun visitors with its mass ascents when more than 100 hot air balloons take off and fly over the city at dawn and dusk. The free-to-visit fiesta also has daytime aerial displays, fairground rides, entertainment, music and food stalls.

200 years of Bristol Museum & Art Gallery

Another iconic city-centre wedding venue makes waves this year as it celebrates its the bi-centenary of its forerunner, The Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science, Literature and the Arts. BI200 will bring together amazing objects and stories from the museum’s collections through a series of themed seasons taking place throughout the year.

To discover more about the myriad of events happening in Bristol to mark its 650th year as a city visit https://visitbristol.co.uk

Firstly, the music. There are a couple of approaches. One is to pick a song you love. The upside to this is you get your favourite tune, but the downside is that it might not work with many, or indeed any, dance styles meaning you’re limited in choice. The second option is to choose a couple of songs you really like and bring them to your dance teacher, who can then advise you on the dances that’ll work for each. The broader your tutor’s experience, the more likely you are to find something that works. The other important consideration is your attire. The dress can have a huge impact on how much you can move and your ability to move without stepping on it. The higher the hem the easier it is. You can always have the dress tailored to barely kiss the floor, have it bustled or have a wrist loop. The latter will limit your ability to lift your arm beyond a certain point, but that’s still easier to accommodate than a very long gown. Another option is to have a second dress specifically for the dance. Whatever you choose, it’s important to practice the dance in a dress and shoes that are as similar to the wedding gown as possible.

post vows.

The Bampfylde Hall meanwhile, dates back to 1680 and with its high ceilings and dramatic timber beams it provides a memorable space for your vows. There’s space here for 150 nearest and dearest.

CROWCOMBE COURT

01984 618 752 | www.crowcombecourt.co.uk

Crowcombe Court is a Grade I listed squire’s mansion located in the village of Crowcombe, around eight miles west of Taunton. The magnificent English Baroque-style house was built in the 1730s from beautiful amber-coloured bricks with Bath stone for the pilasters and frontispiece. Set in the foothills of the Quantock Hills, the beautiful grounds boast many a stunning photographic backdrop from the lake to the croquet lawn. There’s also a wild woodland and guests are welcome to explore throughout the wedding celebrations.

THE “I DOS”

The Great Hall is a beautiful room for a civil ceremony and can seat up to 100 of your nearest and dearest. The intricate, original Italian plasterwork provides a grand and luxurious backdrop to your vows. What’s more, with flexibility in the room’s configuration you can set up the space just as

you’d like it.

The Carew Room is ideal for more intimate nuptials and is a wonderful option if adverse weather conditions render an outdoor ceremony impossible. However, if the sun is shining, the Gazebo is an option, overlooked by the Quantocks it offers a spectacular backdrop indeed.

THE CELEBRATIONS

The Victorian Ballroom offers a showstopping setting for your formal wedding breakfast and can seat up to 100 of your loved ones. With its high ceilings and stunning chandeliers, it’s a beautiful space. The venue’s maximum capacity for an evening do is 150.

Crowcombe has 11 bedrooms available for you and your guests with king-size beds and Edwardian furniture, each has its own ensuite bathroom with a variety of roll-top baths, baths and showers. The combination of bespoke in-house catering, a reasonably priced wine list, the bar and dancing in the Vaulted Undercroft gives you plenty of exciting options when planning your big day.

ST AUDRIES PARK

01984 633 633 | www.audries-park.co.uk

St Audries Park is a hidden gem nestled between the rolling Quantock Hills and the glorious Somerset coastline. An elegant retreat for those those wanting to tie the knot in Somerset, there’s a 100-acre deer park enveloping the grounds, breath-taking views and well-manicured gardens maintained all year round. The panoramic views stretch as far as the Bristol Channel.

This exclusive-use wedding venue boasts a rich history, which is evident as you walk around, with a winding driveway that leads to the dramatic Gothic entrance. Inside, you’ll find an imposing feature fireplace, ornate solid-oak, hand-carved dining table, a gilded drawing room with baby grand piano and ornate ceiling.

The outstanding accommodation here is able to sleep more than 100 guests on the night of your wedding across the estate. You’re even offered the opportunity to extend your celebrations beyond the one day with a Party At Peregrine, which provides accommodation and a private meal

and drinks facilities for you and your nearest and dearest the night before.

THE “I DOS”

The Orangery offers a picturesque setting for your nuptials. Flooded with natural light throughout the year, providing a bright, airy and neutral space that complements any colour palette. It can host 130 for the ceremony including the two of you.

St Etheldreda’s Church sits atop the St Audries Park Estate. Owned and operated by the Church of England, it’s ideal for those wishing to be wed in a religious ceremony and is located just a short stroll away from the main house.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

Receptions take place in The Great Hall for 250 evening guests, which boasts a vaulted ceiling with mezzanine level, offering loved ones a place to dance the night away as well as two bars. The venue can also accommodate 130 for a seated wedding breakfast.

The venue offers exclusive use with the freedom and flexibility to design your perfect wedding day. There are no packages as every big day is bespoke – DIY or organised. The handmade Douglas fir gazebo with slate roof overlooks what must be one of the most incredible views around. As you take your vows, 60 nearest and dearest can look on from their vantage point just feet away on the gentle grassed slope, which creates a natural amphitheatre on the

south-facing lawns.

There’s no need to worry about the weather as the venue can provide a marquee to shelter guests in the event of rain. Alternatively, you have the choice to hold your ceremony in The Barn, which has seating for 55 loved ones.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

The Barn is a flexible space and can serve in many capacities. It’s a great idea for wedding preparations, a tea station, post-ceremony drinks, children’s activities or a chill-out zone. Nearby is a large barbecue area, which is yours for the weekend and the flat gravelled space can be used for the wedding car, additional catering or entertainment.

The reception lawns, complete with entrance steps and arches, sit at the south end of the venue and are large enough to suit all sizes of marquee depending on your plans, but up to 80 guests is a comfortable number. You can also have a catering tent, mobile bar, dancefloor, DJ and/or other live music here.

For any reception, the entire venue including grounds and gardens, is exclusively yours for the duration of your booking (minimum two nights). And as the only neighbours are of the four-legged variety dancing into the early hours won’t be a problem!

WhenElizabeth was working as a nanny in central London, she barely had time to herself, let alone to meet a potential partner. But school friend Phillipa had someone in mind for her and gave Elizabeth her colleague Ben’s number suggesting they should meet up.

We fast forward eight years to 2021 when Ben got down on one knee during a weekend break in Tetbury and asked Elizabeth to marry him. “I was so surprised I thought he was joking,” she remembers.

As she’d always wanted to get married in her home county, Somerset, Elizabeth began scouring the area for their dream venue and found Holbrook Manor. “A beautiful building in a rural setting, it doesn’t do as many weddings as other venues and when we visited there was a real sense that our day was important to them,” she explains.

Read on as the bride tells us all about W-day, 29th July, 2022...

SETTING THE SCENE

The heat was quite a factor on Elizabeth and Ben’s summertime wedding day. In fact, at 27 degrees the bride found herself sweltering in her tiered dress and was slightly worried about fainting! They were, nevertheless, glorious conditions for such a celebration and the couple counted themselves lucky, even if the bride did struggle to get her groom’s wedding band on his finger, again thanks to the heat.

In a slight departure from tradition the newlyweds were joined on the top table by the best man and maid-of-honour plus their partners. Holbrook had arranged an oval-shaped top table meaning conversation between the six companions was much easier. The parents sat together with their close friends and family on another table.

The tables were decorated with blush pink candles, which surrounded the floral centrepieces. Flowers were important to Elizabeth who wanted to have as many as she could and chose blush pinks and purples for a seasonal, rustic, countryside vibe. The beautiful pink place names were scribed in gold calligraphy and the tables were all named after places the couple had been to on holiday as well as the village they now call home. “Fran at Hunter Gatherings who made our stationery was so brilliant, she managed to do our designs at the last minute,” Elizabeth says. To add a bit more colour to the tablescapes they also hired oh-so elegant gold cutlery and napkins.

“Holly Miller was incredibly helpful in suggesting options for our wedding cake,” Elizabeth tells us. “We chose a different flavour for each of our four tiers – traditional fruit; champagne; orange blossom, almond and thyme; and red velvet.” It was adorned in gold leaf and fresh roses with a hexagonal stencil print on the bottom tier.

The catering was all provided by the venue and the couple chose to serve two of each course allowing guests to swap dishes with each other if they wished. What’s more, espresso Martinis were enjoyed by all as the evening began.

LOOKING THE PART

Elizabeth wore a stunning Sassi Holford gown. “I loved how different it was with the polka dot pattern,” she shares. The bride accessorised with a headband by Dolecka and shoes by Jimmy Choo.

The groom wore the same suit as his groomsmen, with a different tie from Salvatorre Ferragamo in keeping with the day’s

pink palette.

The groomsmen were dressed in navy tails with grey pin-stripe trousers and ivory waistcoats. They all paired the outfit with pink ties from Reiss, to complement the colour of the bridesmaids dresses. Their pageboy, the six-year-old youngster Elizabeth is nanny to, wore a smaller version of the usher’s outfits with colourmatching tie.

The bridesmaids looked beautiful in pink full-length dresses and accessorised with their own pearl earrings.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Elizabeth and Ben decided against wedding favours instead hiring an artist who cut silhouettes of their guests for them to take home. “Many had never heard of a silhouette artist before and were thrilled with their cuttings,” Elizabeth says. “One of our guests said: ‘It’s like magic!’”

There was also musical entertainment in the shape of a pianist who played during the welcome drinks and wedding breakfast. Plus, guests were able to enjoy a game or two of croquet thanks to the set the couple bought and laid out on the lawn at Holbrook.

THE GETAWAY

The newlyweds spent two nights at Calcot & Spa, where they got engaged, following the big day and set off for Puglia, Italy a few weeks later. “We both love Italy and Puglia was a part we’d heard so may good things about that neither of us had been to before. Staying in Trullo was quite an experience, one we’ll always remember, it was incredibly cute and secluded. We visited beautiful small towns and ate very well the whole week!” Elizabeth remembers.

IT’S ONLY natural

Claire and Thomas allowed the beauty of Batch Country House and its surroundings shine through with an understated wedding theme Images courtesy of Shutter Bliss Photography

Claire and Thomas met in their secondary school geography class aged 15. They instantly became friends and for a few months spent as much time in each other’s company as possible before Thomas asked Claire out.

Let’s jump ahead to 2019, the day the couple were all set to head off on holiday. Thomas offered to make Claire breakfast in bed and while he was downstairs he sent their dog up with a note on his collar that read: “I have a surprise for you, come and find me. Thomas X.” So, she made her way down and found him in the front room on one knee surrounded by lit candles. “I was in total shock! It took me a good minute to reply,” Claire remembers.

Having been to many a function at Batch Country House during the course of the past decade, Claire knew it was the place she wanted to say, “I do.” She explains, “I love the atmosphere, and the grounds are particularly beautiful with so many great photo opportunities. From my previous experience I also knew the food was fantastic, which was important to us. We also loved how many rooms you have use of on the day, allowing everything to flow amazingly well as there’s so much space.”

Join us as Claire shares her memories of the wedding day, 16th October, 2022...

29 REAL WEDDINGS

Thomas and his groomsmen all wore the same style beige tweed suits, but the groom chose a different tie from the other gents’ navy ones allowing him to stand out a little.

Walking down the aisle was the highlight of the day for both of us. We’d been waiting for this day and the overwhelming feeling of love just took over. We only had eyes for each other!

I wore a dress called Snow. It was nothing like I imagined I’d wear on my wedding day, but as soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one! I felt so beautiful and the back particularly stood out to me. I also wore my best friend’s veil, plus a necklace from White Lace & Promises.

The bridesmaids wore grey maxi dresses with beading detail and batwing sleeves

We had a floral moon gate, which we used as a ceremony and top table backdrop.

30

Our table plan bore a eucalyptus design on white A3 card, with place names created to match.

We kept our flowers to a minimum with plenty of greenery and white blooms.

My sister, the maid-of-honour, did a speech and it was so special for both of us that she did so.

Our favours were small red heart chocolates in personalised bags with our names and wedding date on a card that secured the top. We opted for a minimalistic theme so these were perfect.

Our centrepieces featured gypsophila in tall clear glass vases and we used simple, wooden numbers for our tables to complement our natural theme.

During our ceremony pianist Gemma Watkins added a personal touch.

REAL WEDDINGS

The cake was simple buttercream with faux flowers for decoration. Each tier had a different flavour to make it a little more exciting! These were Lotus Biscoff, Victoria sponge with raspberry jam, and lemon.

In the evening we had an amazing DJ who got all of our guests up dancing. We didn’t didn’t feel the need for extra entertainment as our wedding was late afternoon.

We went to Cape Verde for a week on honeymoon. We planned this only about a month before our wedding. We had the most amazing time. Being parents to a toddler it was great to relax for a week and enjoy being newlyweds.

Relax! I’m usually quite type A and was worried I wouldn’t be able to chill and enjoy the day, but that’s exactly I did. I kept telling myself: ‘If I haven’t thought of it by now, it isn’t important.’

ON TOP OF the world

From a nod to their first date at an Imagine Dragons concert to the bride’s love of crochet, Sammy and Liam included plenty of special personal touches in their wedding day Images courtesy of Victoria Welton Photography

Sammy met Liam through work. “He called ‘dibs’ when he first saw me,” she says. “But we didn’t actually have our first date until six months later.” The couple were like two peas in a pod even during those early days and they shared plenty of laughs together.

Sammy was standing in her pyjamas trying to sort out last-minute laundry and packing for their holiday when Liam proposed. “We both knew we wanted to be together, so getting engaged felt like a natural progression, but I hadn’t expected it to happen at that moment,” Sammy shares. Neither had Liam in fact! He’d asked his dad to pick up the engagement ring from the jewellers before making the excuse to Sammy that he was going to play football so that he could slip out and collect it from him. He even went to all the effort of putting his sports kit on. This

was all so that she wouldn’t suspect his intention to propose while they were away. “But when he saw the ring, he got so nervous he ended up asking that night before we left,” she says.

The pair had just one requirement for the venue: it had to be possible to host the whole day there, including rooms for guests to stay overnight. The moment they met the team at The Shrubbery Hotel it felt like the place for them. “Instead of explaining how they ran weddings there, the first thing they asked us was how we wanted our day to go. So, it felt much more like we could have our wedding, not just a wedding,” Sammy tells us.

Read on as the bride shares her account of their autumnal big day, 15th October, 2022...

35 REAL WEDDINGS

I chose dried flowers as these reflected the autumnal theme better than fresh. Also it meant we could have lovely keepsakes from the day. I was pleasantly surprised that I was abled to get dried flowers in such bright colours. I put all of the arrangements together myself with help from my mum and sister, with the exception of the bouquets, which I purchased from Etsy – they were a bit beyond our abilities!

I kept my accessories simple and wore the sapphire necklace and earrings I inherited from my nan, so it felt like she was with me. My shoes were a fab pair of heels from Esska, which were the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. I also wore a veil and even managed to keep it on the whole day.

Liam wore a green, tweed, three-piece suit. Originally he was going to wear the brown to match the groomsmen, but after we saw the green we decided on the change, which allowed him to stand out more. Luckily the orange ties looked good with both colours. Meanwhile, the groomswoman wore a brown dress to coordinate with the groom’s party.

We went to an Imagine Dragons concert on our first date, so we tried to incorporate their music into our day. Our pianist played On Top of The World as we left the ceremony.

I went into Eleanor Florence in Yeovil with every intention of buying a very boho, relaxed dress with some lace, but came out with something much more structured and formal. I only tried on four, but knew this was the one I wanted Liam to see me in.

The bridesmaids wore burnt orange floor-length dresses. I decided on the colour and let them pick their own styles – they both ended up wanting the same one! We left also left the accessories up to the individuals so that they could feel like themselves.

36

One of our most memorable moments was walking into the hotel and seeing it decorated with all of our personal touches. For Liam it was also seeing me walk down the aisle. In his words: ‘I was an absolute wreck of nerves before you arrived, but seeing you centred me and I calmed down.’ For me it was sitting at the top table, seeing our loved ones having made the effort to come and celebrate with us.

My sister designed and printed all of the stationery and invitations, my dad built the arch and stands for the large metal hearts, Liam built the copper pipe frames for all the signage, my mum made the table decorations, and my mother-in-law cut all of the fabric for the ribbon garlands as well as for the table runners, which she also hemmed. It was a real team effort!

I crochet a lot, so I made mini dolls of Liam and I in our wedding outfits for the cake topper. I started them with plenty of time, but a week before they still weren’t fully dressed, so I was worried they’d be in their undies on the day! Luckily I got them done in time and they were my favourite part of the styling.

We decided on table numbers rather than names, but included funny photos of the two of us at that age. My mum made match boxes that when opened, photos of myself and Liam popped out!

We made a snug area in the corner of the room for the kids, with a house den frame, a mini table and lots of cushions and blankets. I put in some wedding-themed activity books, colouring pages and pencils. It gave them something to occupy themselves with during the speeches.

37 REAL WEDDINGS

We each picked an element that was non-negotiable for us and that formed the basis of our planning and budgeting. Liam’s was that the venue had to be able to host the whole day, and mine was to have a live band rather than a DJ. Also, remember to have fun during the planning stage, it’s not just about the day but all the build up too.

I really enjoyed it when Victoria took us outside to catch the sunset for some extra couples photos. It gave us a few minutes to be present in our day. She was brilliant both before and on the day, making us feel completely relaxed.

A pianist entertained us all during the ceremony and drinks reception. She really set the tone for a relaxed, fun day, it was lovely having her play in the background and I was very impressed. Then, we had a live band in the evening, they were fab at getting everyone up and dancing. I had loads of people asking about them. They were all incredibly professional and talented musicians.

We spent 10 days in Belek, Turkey for our honeymoon. It was the perfect place to relax and celebrate the first days of married life together.

This project was born when celebrant Tracey James, Natalie from Blossom Co Floral Design and Stephie from Old Blue Photography, all keen to work together on something, came up with the idea for a relaxed glamour vibe showcasing the work of local suppliers. Their vision was cemented when Carina B Couture joined the crew with a stunning dress, shrug and headpiece. Very much taking the lead with the styling, the dress was complemented by the creamy lemon tones of the palette as well as by Daisy, the Nissan Figaro. “All of our suppliers came up trumps with their interpretation of the theme and we all love the results,” Tracey says. We do too!

Wedding catering ideas to suit your vibe

So much of the atmosphere you create for your big day comes from the catering. If you dream of a traditional, elegant and grand affair, then a seated wedding breakfast with three courses (or more) will send you well on your way to setting the right tone. On the other hand, if a relaxed and informal celebration is on the cards, you’ll be looking for

Love at For the traditionalists

something that’s much more flexible and free-flowing. But when all’s said and done, as long as you ensure loved ones have plenty to indulge in they’ll be well-fuelled with a spring in their step by the time they’re ready to hit the dancefloor. Whatever you vision, we have some food for thought...

ALL ABOUT YOU

What if you have something super-special in mind? Henny from Bristol-based Paxton & Brown Caterers has the answers.

We don’t have set or package menus, instead we work closely with our couples to understand what flavours and dishes excite them and create a menu specific to that. Our main tip is to centre the menu around you – your guests will love something a bit different and food with a personal feel.

Whatever your style of wedding, don’t forget about canapés – following the wedding ceremony your guests will be peckish especially those who may have travelled a little further to get to you. We recommend choosing three or four different options for everyone to enjoy.

“Ensure you have a table plan and table layout with assigned seating that's been shared with your caterers. Often it'll be a few months since guests have submitted their food orders, so we suggest writing their food choices on their place cards to remind them of what they chose. Also having menus printed for the tables is a nice touch!”

A LA CARTE

Not sure how to put a three-course menu together? Naomi Coombes at Mesa Catering in Bristol has some food for thought.

We’d suggest a light starter, perhaps served on a sharing board so guests can take as little or as much as they like at this stage.

Then, to keep things simple, having just two to three options for main course is best. A couple of meat/fish options and a vegetarian/vegan choice.

Finally, having two choices for dessert should be ample. Usually, having something chocolatey along with a lighter, more fruity option should cover all bases.

GET CREATIVE

Want the food to look as good as it tastes with no compromises? Jo Cranston from Queen & Whippet has you covered.

Plated food doesn’t have to be the most traditional option. Couples planning a modern, on-trend tablescape will look for a caterer whose menu and plating match up. The best event caterers can recreate fine-dining plating from a tent in a field – ask your potential suppliers to provide photos of their presentation style.

Our clients share our love of the incredible Bristol food scene and want their wedding menus to be just as creative. Our advice would be to share your favourite restaurants and dishes with the chefs in advance of your tasting to give them a good idea of the cuisine and aesthetic you’re going for.

“Remember your caterers are there only for you on your wedding day – talk to us about the planning of the day including speeches, cake cutting and so on, as this can impact the timings of the meal service.”

For the free-spirited

On the subject of relaxed, informal dining our experts are all on the same page. It’s sharing and caring that’s the way forward!

SETTING THE SCENE

Naomi at Mesa Catering says: We love the family-style sharing bowls and boards that are really on trend at the moment. They’re great for creating atmosphere and sparking conversation. You can also have lots of variety in your meal with guests picking and choosing the items they like.

For an outdoor wedding, festival-style buffet stations are a go-to. Forget the crockery and cutlery, instead opt for eco-disposables. Just ensure you have some benches or seating dotted around for guests to perch and have their food, as well as a few bins for rubbish.

HOW A-GRAZING!

JUST RELAX

Henny from Paxton & Brown Caterers says: Sharing-style wedding menus are fully recommended if you’re looking for a more relaxed feel with food still at the heart of your day.

One of our most popular sharing main courses is butterflied lamb rubbed with our special blend of warm aromatic spices and slathered in chimichurri. We serve this with a selection of salads and flatbreads and it’s amazing! We can create wonderful things from a marquee kitchen so don’t be afraid to ask – we’ll let you know of any limitations and suggest alternatives.

Grazing tables offer the ultimate shared dining experience, Stephanie Kenward from Somerset-based Rhubarb & Ginger Grazing tells us more...

Grazing tables have become very popular in recent years amongst couples who want to steer away from the very traditional, formal sit down three-course meal. With sweet and savoury options they provide the perfect choice for both wedding breakfasts and evening receptions.

Each of our graze tables is bespoke and includes a vast variety of ingredients, there’s no need for the tedious task of asking guests for their meal options, and expecting them to remember the one they chose a year previous. There’s something for everyone!

We tend to find that couples will choose a large graze table, banquet-style buffet for their evening reception while opting for sharing platters for each table or as a graze runner for banquet-style seating for their wedding breakfast. The latter provides the perfect balance between relaxed, social eating without guests having to get up and down for their food. The setup becomes a centrepiece and really works to tie in the theme and style of the day. It’s also so lovely to see guests’ reactions when they first lay eyes on it!

IT’S GOOD TO TALK

Jo from Queen & Whippet says: Food as a shared experience is a great way to get your guests talking. Sharing boards or feasts served family-style allow them to choose from a wider variety of options while managing their own portion control. We’ve helped clients to include their heritage, family traditions or shared experiences through sharing dishes; it’s a great conversation starter.

Our graze tables are framed with fresh foliage, we tend to use soft ruscus and varieties of eucalyptus, which lends a beautiful aroma with a natural, outdoorsy feel. Our 1kg Somerset bries are place on rugged log slices and we use hand-crafted wooden crates as tiers and carved wooden boards, utensils and bamboo candles. Our props and equipment create a dreamy ambience, which reflects a relaxed, rustic, woodland vibe. That’s one of the reasons grazing tables tend to be the preferred option for many couples planning an outdoor wedding, but also because we don’t necessarily require any kitchen facilities. So it’s ideal when catering for a barn, tipi, marquee of festi-wedding.

“Discuss your dining choices with your florist and plan your tabletop décor to include lots of space. Full-length table garlands are on-trend and look incredible, but they don’t leave anywhere to place serving dishes, whereas delicate, minimal posy vases will work much better. If table space is at a premium, ask your caterer for a plated element with sharing sides.” – Jo, Queen & Whippet

Dietary requirements

The key to making sure every guest is happy and well-fed is communication. Our experts explain...

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON

Naomi at Mesa Catering says: Don’t panic when it comes to dietaries. Caterers tend to have a bank of options available for common dietary requirements, such as vegan and gluten-free guests. For more complex requirements, it’s sometimes worth asking the guest what kinds of food they usually eat and are comfortable with. You can also put them in touch with your caterer directly to work out their meal.

ALL IN THE DETAIL

Henny from Paxton & Brown Caterers says: It’s important to ask all of your guests if they have any special requirements and then tell your caterer everything, even if you think it’s a small detail or something that won’t affect your menu. Unlike being in a restaurant our chefs will only have the produce necessary for the day and so by this point we’ll have very limited options for supplying alternatives. During the planning stages we’re more than happy to talk directly to guests especially those with severe allergies –some can feel very anxious about this, so we’re happy to talk them through the menu step by step to put them at ease.

THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE

Jo from Queen & Whippet says: As parents of a child with multiple allergies, we know the anxiety eating out can cause. We’ve planned entire menus around complex allergies, and love a vegan wedding. Make it easy for your guests to provide dietary information at the RSVP stage and publish the menu on your wedding website so any issues can be resolved in good time. Ask your caterer if they’re happy for guests with severe allergies to contact them directly, and if you’re having a buffet establish how dishes will be labelled. A dietary-inclusive caterer will welcome open discussion from the start.

EASY AS PIE

Stephanie from Rhubarb & Ginger Grazing says: Grazing tables are surprisingly easy to cater for both dietary requirements and allergies. We provide different parts of the table that cater for vegetarians and vegans or separate meat onto centrepiece wooden boards, in order to keep them apart from other ingredients.

When it comes to allergies we use tiers or boards holding gluten-free options for instance and bake many of our own cakes to ensure we can provide alternatives that are just as good. We also use lots of local producers and work with them to ensure we can provide ingredients that are free-from or suitable for particular diets.

We’ve seen a massive increase in veggie and vegan wedding graze tables for 2023 and have a number of bookings to create a solely vegan version for the entire wedding party, which is such a treat. Being veggie myself, I know what tastes good and these ingredients don’t need to be seen as boring and tasteless anymore. Guests will be amazed when they set eyes on the table filled with an impressive variety of ingredients and colour. Due to the increased demand we’re seeing a wider variety of superior alternatives on the market now such as vegan cheeses.

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

Ifyou’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

52

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day. You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

2023 TRENDS

SPECIAL

HOT TOPIC

Join us as some of the regions’ wedding aficionados discuss their 2023 trend predictions

SAY “I DO” THE SUSTAINABLE WAY

Georgia Bradley, wedding coordinator at Berwick Lodge (www.berwicklodge.co.uk) says: “I believe eco-conscious decision making will be a big trend for 2023. Think thrifting and sustainability, casual yet cool with a focus on the experience.

After the last couple of years, we’ve all done some reflecting and have a better understanding of what’s truly important and this has certainly given celebrations a deeper meaning. Think about incorporating special gestures on the day, such as personalised notes; perhaps you could ask guests to make a charitable donation or fund a local project on your behalf.

“Think consciously about your purchases. Ask guests to be considerate of how they travel, keep food miles down and try to give back to the environment perhaps by planting your own tree. A wedding dress, for example, can be a huge portion of the wedding budget, so we should be aware of the manufacturing process and how workers are treated. Consider buying a preloved gown, or perhaps repurposing a relative’s.

“Finally, 2020 put a strain on the UK’s finances, so look closer to home. On websites such as Etsy, you can find unique high-quality items from independent shops. You could even try Facebook Marketplace for items no longer needed by other couples.”

BRING ME A HIRE LOVE

Lynne Panes at Rustic Rentals (www.rusticrentals.co.uk) says: “More couples are considering sustainability when choosing wedding suppliers and styling. Hiring your décor is a great way to keep costs down and be more eco-conscious about your big day. Plus, you can get better quality items and more for less money. As wedding stylists since 2015, specialising in prop hire, we’ve always created sustainable weddings that not only look fabulous, but are kind to the environment and your pocket.

“Wedding sweetheart and couples’ tables are more popular and a little less traditional, offering a more intimate option on your wedding day. These are also useful when complicated family dynamics come into play. The sweetheart table is a small table where you can both sit together rather than having a top table with family and close friends. If your family group is too large for a top table this is a fantastic solution. Trestle tables will also be more popular for guests in 2023 decked in vintage brass candlesticks and fabric runners.

“Ceremony flower arches and statement wedding backdrops will both be popular choices for 2023.

Large statement floral installations such as asymmetrical arches are a fantastic option for framing the front of your ceremony, before repurposing as reception focal points. Floral meadows too make wonderful aisle arrangements and can be transformed into centrepieces later in the day. Flowers are big budget items, but definitely worth it. If you can add dried flowers and grasses, this can make your pennies stretch further as well as adding plenty of beautiful texture.”

DYNAMIC BAKES

Claire Hansen from Claire Hansen Cakes (www.clairehansencakes.com) says: “The recent trend for adding colourful tiers to your wedding cake is set to continue in 2023. Where deep, rich hues of blue and green have been popular over the last few years, I’m starting to see couples with colour palettes that feature shades of burgundy, pink and magenta, which coincidentally has just been named Pantone Colour of the Year – Viva Magenta.

“Cakes that feature a combination of small and tall tiers or an alternatively shaped tier, such as hexagonal, continue to be popular and are often used to highlight the addition of a colourful tier bringing drama and interest to the overall look.

“I’m also very excited to see couples opting for more design-led cakes featuring wafer paper foliage with features such as sails. This is something I specialise in and really enjoying making. Wafer paper silver dollar leaves are a beautiful, subtle way to add structural design elements to your cake wile staying true to a traditional white wedding palette. These can easily be mixed with cakes, leaves and flowers in other hues to create a dynamic and showstopping centrepiece – gorgeous!”

Gaynor Page at Topikki Stationery

(www.topikki.co.uk) says: “We’ve seen some trends lingering on post pandemic in the wedding stationery world, but 2023 will see most of them fading as we look forward to some lovely subtle changes. Wallets will still be popular with gatefolds taking the place of the envelope style and other folded versions creeping in.

“Following King Charles III’s accession to the throne, I wondered whether we’d see a more formal look to invitations, with monograms at the top. It seems I was right, and fast approaching are single square or landscape invitations bearing a monogram or image of the venue either stand-alone or as inserts in pocket wallets.

“Flora and foliage are still prevalent too but there will be more of an emphasis on line work rather than the heavier boho feel of recent years. Colours are also changing. I think we’ll see metallics being replaced by shimmer or sheen and an increase in neutrals and stronger pastels. Font styles are evolving as well, with script being overtaken by simpler versions.

“Another thing I’m aware of is the use of wax seals and there’s now a vast array of colours to choose from. They go hand in hand with crest invitations and the whole look can be enhanced by envelope liners to match.”

OH THE DRAMA!

Photographer Em of Em & Woz (https://emwoz.co) says: “Certainly 2022, was an interesting one for us as wedding photographers. A number of our couples were given the opportunity to celebrate big time, let their hair down and finally have their wedding day after several postponements due to the pandemic.

“We’ve found that many of our couples chose very natural tones with perhaps a hint of green or blue, which gave our images a cool and subtle tonal palette. For 2023, we’ll be expecting to see more dramatic imagery with the use of beautiful bold warm colours such as magenta and plum in particular.

“Reportage, or documentary photography, has been growing in popularity over the past few years and we’ll see that trend continue as many people are a bit camera shy and the candid style puts way less pressure on them. There’s also a trend towards a more analogue feel to photographs, with direct flash lending them a bit of paparazzi glamour and even a bit of, gasp, grain and blur! This really works well in the evening as the party starts to get going and people start to let loose a bit. Next year it’s all about the dramatic look.”

SOMERSET’S NEARLYWEDS HAVE SPOKEN

Amber Packer-Hughes at the Somerset Wedding Registration Service (www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk) says: “Thanks to our big wedding survey, we have a great idea of what couples are really looking for. We asked, and hundreds of brides and grooms told us what they think. A whopping 80 per cent said they want their ceremony to be relaxed. The vast majority also want it to feel personal, and half are looking for something fun. About a third are aiming for a simple, intimate or modern vibe. More and more couples are asking for extra touches like time capsules, which allow them to create something really special with their guests.

“We were surprised that only about a third of couples thought it was important to write their own vows. There are actually quite a few options in our vow packs and it’s great to know that more than half of nearlyweds are trusting us to write those special words.

“We’re so excited to be revamping our own ceremonies now we’ve got the results –we know how much this means to you all. We can’t speak for all registration services, but here in Somerset we’re completely happy to include requests for something quirky or meaningful. If you have an idea, just ask!”

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

Craig Cheber at Booth Nineteen (https://booth19.co.uk) says: “With the cost of living the way it is, 2023 will be a year to make sure you get as much value as possible from your wedding entertainment. There’s an array of options available from magicians, children’s entertainers and bouncy castles for the daytime; to bands, DJs and pop-up bars in the evening. While every single one of these options are sure to provide you and your loved ones with laughs and surprises on your wedding day, they’re all over and done with by the time you wake up and leave you with nothing physical to keep and cherish forever. However, with a photo booth, more popular than ever going into 2023, that’s about to change.

“Not only does the photo booth keep you and your guests entertained and amused, you get physical prints, which will undoubtedly end up on everyone’s fridges and freezers. What’s more you get a real-life guestbook filled with handwritten messages and photo strips from every single person that used the photo booth (and the attendant will make sure that’s most of them). This will be available to pull out of the cupboard for a laugh at any moment for the rest of your lives!

“Don’t settle for just being entertained in 2023, get more for your money, make sure you have something to cherish forever!”

KEEP IT CANDID

Wedding planner Samantha Smart at Wedding Regency (www.weddingregency.com) says: “One trend I expect to see this year is candid photos. Couples are at their most relaxed and the images are beautiful, with smiles natural and easy. A good photographer is more than capable of shooting in this style, especially if that’s what they specialise in, alongside capturing those more formal group shots. But there’s also the option to go retro and use disposable cameras and polaroids scattered around the guest tables. Another option is to hire a photo booth. These are great fun and the supplier will also bring along plenty of super-fun props.”

Sustainable STYLES

These designers offer something green as they promote their latest collections created using eco-friendly fabrics

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA

Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it.

One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com

GRACE LOVES LACE

Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”

Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”

The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.”

VERA WANG BRIDE

Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.

Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.

Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”

In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32). www.verawangbride.com

BO & LUCA

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.

Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com

ANDREA HAWKES

British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”

Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come.

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the experts

2023 TRENDS

This issue we asked local beauty experts for their top 2023 trend predictions, giving you the jump on the latest looks. This is what they told us...

Make-up artist Gillian Rachel Elizabeth (www.gillianrachelelizabeth.com) says: “With 2023 in full swing and the wedding season commencing, I’m seeing more and more neutrals, nude eyes and statement lips, which are all hotter than ever.

“A flawless, glowing, neutral base is something I’m seeing a lot of and it’s a look I love! The effect is timeless and suits every bride as you’re essentially just building on your natural beauty. Combined with golden tones for the eyes, the perfect lash to make them pop is simply sensational, adding thickness, curve, and length without overlaying mascara. What’s more, a winged eye with a natural smoke instantly warms and gives that sense of romance with an effortless touch.

“Finally, the lips. This year, brides are set to showcase bolder pouts than ever, which is why the flawless base combined with warming natural eyes really allows the lips their time to shine. Using a deeper liner than lipstick has an enhancing effect, creating the illusion of fullness.”

Jane Dare, make-up artist from Eye Do!

(https://eyedomakeup.co.uk), says: “This year’s brides are all about emphasising natural beauty. Timeless, natural looks, luminous, natural, glowing and healthy skin complete with more subtle contouring. Eyeshadows range from complete nude, all the way to a neutral-toned smoky eye, perfect for that natural glam vibe. High-end glam on the other hand embraces glitter and metallic-based eyeshadows such as silver, bronze and copper providing a touch of colour and flash.

“Coloured eyeliner has arrived and is already trending more than black. Apply it to the upper lashes, central eye or add a personal, artistic flair. Eyelashes are centre stage. Think extensions full of volume and length or something natural, both with waterproof mascara, of course! Brows are naturally feathered rather than heavy and gently frame the face.

“Prominent, romantic, rosy-blushed cheeks with gentle highlighting and a dusting of blush under the eyes, as per the Korean trend, gives you a sweeter, youthful image.

“Finally, 2023 lip colours will favour cherry, browns and rose tones, glossed for a bold and sophisticated look.”

TRIED AND TESTED

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

DOT TO DOT

The Utan Pen is the viral TikTok freckle pen that Sophie Habboo and Melissa Tattum are raving about. While many of you may long for a glowy sun-kissed look for your big day, the damage UV rays can cause the skin is something we’re only too aware of. The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

BEAUTY NEWS 77

THE hair NECESSITIES

Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord

Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.

Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.

What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look?

Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.

Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist

should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.

What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!

What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.

Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.

Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

HONEYMOONS 85

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.

We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

86
Sarah Gallivan samples a taste of the Mediterranean on the dreamy island of Crete

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.
