"We are so happy we chose Pollards for our wedding reception, Cara and her team did a superb job being attentive to our needs in the planning. On the day she made sure everything ran smoothly throughout and the staff were extremely helpful, we had a great day!

The food was delicious for every course, and the canapés went down extremely well in the outside Barnhouse and gorgeous gardens with our guests. They catered for our guests with dietary requirements superbly, and they were well looked after.

It was the perfect venue for the number of friends and family that we wanted, and it created a lovely intimate wedding which we will never forget!

We particularly loved the private bar area and decoration of the main room which made the whole day feel so special and we couldn't recommend Pollards enough!"

The joys of spring

EDITORIAL

Deputy Managing Editor Kelly Andrews | 01376 535 611 kelly.andrews@county.wedding

To quote one of my favourite movies, Miss Congeniality and Rhode Island’s Cheryl, when asked to describe her perfect date: “I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” While hilarious in the context of the film, I do have to agree with her, because she’s perfectly described how I’ve always felt about spring. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I hate, hate, hate hot weather; and while I love the winter, the dark nights can get you down. So, for me spring is the ideal happy medium: not too hot, not too cold. And that’s before we even get started on everything else it brings such as the beauty of new life and the joy of Easter. In short, what a wonderful time of year for a wedding!

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Sarah Ellis | 01376 535 602 sarah.ellis@county.wedding

We’re particularly blessed in Britain with definition in our seasons so we get to experience spring in all it’s glory where so many countries around world don’t get to enjoy its subtleties in quite the same way. This is when British blooms come into their own. Think of the oh-so on trend loose wildflower style of bouquet bursting with anemones, tulips, sweet peas, narcissi and ranuculus, not forgetting the eternally popular wedding flower, peonies. Aisle runners featuring the same create the ambience of walking barefoot through a meadow and when transferred to the reception tables they create that wonderful soft English country garden feel. Why not take inspiration for your wedding palette from the hues found in nature throughout the spring months? Lemon, blush, peach, lavender, sage green... the list goes on. What’s more, this year’s Pantone colour of the year Viva Magenta is so versatile it works beautifully alongside pastels as a bold accent.

If a big-day bake’s not for you, or you’re after a variety of grabbable sweet offerings for evening guests, we’d highly recommend a dessert table packed with tasty treats – all tied in with your wedding’s palette and/or theme of course.

NEW VENUE ALERT!

The Lake House Waterloo in the heart of Sefton, opened it’s doors at the end of the summer in 2022. On New Year’s Day, the team hosted their first wedding, which they managed to plan and deliver in just eight weeks. “This is very unusual for couples as they usually have a much longer lead time, but post-Covid many have really changed their outlook,” event sales manager Natalie Nixon tells us.

Since hosting its second wedding open day in the first week of January, the venue has seen a surge in wedding bookings, which for one still very much in its infancy is incredible and great to hear. “That weekend alone, we booked a staggering 15 weddings just for 2023, with other bookings made up until 2025 and beyond,” Natalie continues.

With stunning lake views and coastal scenery, The Lake House offers a one-of-a-kind and alternative venue for couples looking to wow and surprise their guests. At the same time, it offers the very best of local products along with affordable accommodation. Natalie finishes, “Great hospitality is what we do. We truly believe we can deliver over and above what our couples dream of for their big day.”

BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS

Local Liverpool florist Booker Flowers & Gifts has announced its acceptance into the Good Florist Guide as a full member. The Guide represents the gold standard when it comes to floristry and is the only merit-based florist directory in the world.

LET’S FACE IT

Chester’s multi-award-winning The Spa at Carden has introduced the new Signature Facial to its extensive treatment menu. In partnership with Germain de Capuccini, the Spa is one of the first to have this treatment on its list.

The Signature Facial provides unparalleled radiance-boosting results using highly effective ingredients with unique anti-ageing techniques to hydrate, tone an illuminate the skin. A powerful blend of vitamin C, E and fruit acids work together to neutralise fine lines, wrinkles and tired-looking skin. This yoga-inspired facial, combined with an infused mask, also uses its own massage techniques that relieve stress and tension. You’ll be awakened from your treatment with gentle stretches and uplifting aromas, feeling the effects of ageing and fatigue dissipate.

The Signature Facial is priced at £155 for 75 minutes. Find out more at www.cardenpark.co.uk/spa

Booker Flowers & Gifts was awarded this prestigious accolade by the Guide’s advisory panel in December and owner Gemma Wakerley and the team are understandably over the moon. Commenting on their success Gemma says, “We’re delighted to be accepted into the Good Florist Guide. We’re passionate about flowers, design, quality and the service we give to each of our customers, so it’s wonderful to have this recognised. What’s special about our business is that we provide beautiful flowers that don’t cost the earth. EDITOR LOVES

On one of the many occasions I’ve disappeared down the Instagram rabbit hole recently, I discovered local lovely Light Up The Occasion and its gorgeous new dream trio wedding package, which I just had to show you.

The package at the offer price of £749 includes a gold decorative moongate, a luxury gold welcome easel, and a mini-backdrop, which can be used for your cake, drinks station, food table, guest book or any focal point you see fit.

I often marvel at how far we’ve come from the tacky balloon displays of my youth to the chic, sophisticated and downright stunning features balloon stylists are creating now in the 2020s. Resplendent in an oh-so on trend palette of white, gold, green and silver, these beauties made me stop scrolling immediately!

Following the death of Sir Edward the Castle passed through several members of the family until it became Leasowe Castle Hotel in 1891. Now owned by a private businessman who has plans to continue to invest in the venue with a full refurbishment programme, the Hotel boasts beautiful bedrooms overlooking the Wirral peninsular and surrounding areas.

THE “I DOS”

The most popular room for ceremonies to take place is the beautiful Keep. There’s space here for 130 loved ones. It was a beautiful addition to the hotel in 2015 and is a bright open space filled with natural daylight and is located in the heart of the Castle.

It’s the main function room at the Castle, located on the ground floor. Filled with daylight this room is an ideal setting for a wedding or celebration. This room also has a large bar space and a partition that means it can be divided into two if required.

The smaller of the Castle’s function rooms is the Turret Suite, which can host 60 for the wedding breakfast and 100 for the evening revelries.

Finally, the Keep, which can host 80 dining guests and 100 evening party goers, has a pop-up bar as an addition for the daytime/evening.

The venue also offers a private lodge, which is available for hire for the night before and the night of the wedding, as well as a dressing room on site for the bridal party to use for preparations.

Ali and David planned their big day with a focus on sustainability and a vintage twist

Images courtesy of Leigh & Lee Photography

WhenAli met David she was working as the weddings and events manager at Speke Hall. David was doing some volunteer work in the gardens and she roped him in to helping out with her Halloween zombie event. “Not many couples meet making gravestone props out of recycled materials,” Ali laughs.

As their relationship grew from there, deciding to get married seemed like a natural progression, and Ali suggested it might be time David bought her a ring. So together they chose her beautiful, Edwardian, four-stone engagement ring. She had to wait for it to be resized and then wait again for the proposal. Ali remembers, “I was like a cat on a hot tin roof! But he eventually proposed in the traditional way, at home, just us. Personal, private and totally him.”

There was only one choice of venue when it came to tying the knot: the Great Hall, the oldest part of the sensational Tudor halftimber Speke Hall. “As we’re known to staff there, and were the last couple to marry there before they stopped hosting weddings for conservation reasons, we got a lot of leeway,” Ali explains. They opted to host their reception at Oh Me Oh My due to its chilled, vintage vibe, incredible food and service, plus stunning views of the Three Graces.

Join us as the bride tells us all about this super-special day, 18th September, 2022...

WE DO

At the start of their ceremony, Ali and David elected to have a ring warming, which is an old Irish tradition of passing the wedding bands around the guests as they make a wish or silent prayer for the couple before they’re exchanged with the “I dos.”

The ceremony entrances proved particularly memorable as the groom and best man danced in to Happy by Pharell Williams, followed by the ring bearer who came in to Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top. “He plays wheelchair basketball for the Welsh under18s side and did a wheelchair spin at the top of the aisle,” Ali remembers. The junior bridesmaids got everyone clapping along to Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, then it was time for Ali and her daughters to slow things down a bit with True Love from the musical High Society

The couple had made their own wedding rings with Britt and Andrew at Noctua Jewellery in Liverpool. This meant that Ali’s unusually-shaped Edwardian engagement ring would always have a wedding band to fit neatly alongside it. “We blended sentimental family gold from both families to make them, and David’s featured the birthstones of both of my daughters. Making our rings together in a private day-long workshop was so special. Not only was it the environmentally-friendly thing to do, it symbolised the joining of our two families,” Ali shares

SETTING THE SCENE

Ali cultivated cuttings of a rose given to her late parents as a wedding present, and gave them to guests as favours. She printed out tags to explain the significance, which left everyone in tears. These also doubled as place names helping to cut down on waste. The table plan was held by a spray-painted multi-frame copper structure, with the tables named after the duo’s shared interests – cats, caravans, crochet, coffee and cake, tea and biscuits, archaeology, and steam trains.

Ali and David sourced vintage glass cake stands, candle holders, and crystal vases and bowls, which they filled with candles and placed everything on mirrored plates at the centre of each table to reflect the light. The bride also made 150 metres of bunting using vintage doilies sourced from local charity shops. She also purchased preloved hoops, which she decorated with faux flowers. This along with other garlands and wreaths are now being resold so that other

The fresh flower bouquets, corsages and buttonholes were all created by Lush in Liverpool (yes, the bath bomb place!). The team only use seasonal and locally-grown flowers and foliage, which was in keeping with the couple’s sustainable goals for their big day. Ali’s bouquet featured hydrangeas, eucalyptus and jasmine as its main elements.

Vintage wedding cars were hired from Love and Carriage. “This is the closest company to where we live, so again we were able to reduce our carbon footprint,” Ali explains.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

At Speke Hall the couple provided enough drinks and canapés to tide guests over until the wedding breakfast at Oh Me Oh My. Here, the couple’s assembled loved ones were spoiled with a five course meal of sharing antipasti, followed by fricassee of roasted onions and wild mushrooms or chicken, leeks and pistachio terrine. The main courses were garlic rump of lamb, dauphinoise potatoes and green vegetable medley or harissa roast cauliflower steak with Mediterranean ratatouille. Desserts were candied ginger crème brulee with vanilla shortbread or strawberry and lime pavlova with basil sugar and Chantilly cream.

In the evening, guests tucked in to fish and chips with mushy peas, or mini burgers. A selection of cakes was also on offer as a sweet treat, including the big-day bake. Cake On The Lake is based only a stone’s throw from Oh Me Oh My, so again the carbon footprint resulting from delivery was minimal. The bake boasted four flavours and each tier was displayed on its own vintage stand, a pile of books reflecting one of the couple’s interests, with a cake topper to match.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride looked stunning in a custom-made ballgown in champagne satin and tulle with ivory tulle and lace overlay. It also had a sweetheart neckline with a keyhole back, and a crystal and pearl belt for added detail. Ali made her own fingertip veil edged with delicate lace appliqués and crystal drops, as well as a side tiara. To further personalise her gown, she ordered an embroidered wedding dress applique from Perfectly Bridal on Etsy. It was customised with their names, wedding date and ceremony venue. She also ordered a matching tie patch for the groom.

As a huge fan of Doctor Who, the bride’s something old, new, borrowed and blue was a Tardis hanging from her bouquet, and alongside it an Adam and the Ants tomahawk. “They’re still my favourite band and I’ve seen Adam live three times in four years now,” she explains. Finally, and most importantly, a mini photograph frame with a picture of her late parents on their wedding day was also included.

The groom and best man wore navy morning suits with contrasting blue waistcoats, while the usher and ring bearer were dressed in matching lounge suits. All four gents accessorised with dusky pink ties and pocket squares to tie in with the bridesmaids’ dresses.

Ali’s two adult daughters were maid-of-honour and chief bridesmaid. They both wore matching dusky pink gowns featuring beautifully embroidered tulle over satin, with a Bardot neckline and high-low hem. “They wanted gowns they could wear again and they were absolutely perfect choices,” Ali says. The two junior bridesmaids wore almost identical dresses, except for the neckline –one was halter. The youngest was itching to get into a princess dress, so hers had a full, floor-length tulle skirt with a satin top and heart-

35 REAL WEDDINGS

shaped keyhole back. The girls dresses varied slightly in hue creating a mismatched effect, which worked wonderfully.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Having worked in the wedding industry for more than a decade and because they’d been forced to postpone their big day twice, Ali had plenty of opportunity to plan a whole host of entertainment and surprises. At Speke Hall, Maghull Parish Handbell Ringers greeted guests, and played again on the South Lawn while everyone was enjoying drinks and canapés. “It was such a magical sound,” Ali recalls.

During the evening, vintage-style singer Bexi Owen performed. Ali tells us, “I met Bexi when she was just starting out and she says I gave her her first break way back in 2011.” The couple also booked magician Simon Hughes who confounded and delighted guests from 5pm into the evening.

Finally, the Jolly Good Photo Co. provided a wonderful vintagethemed photo booth, complete with authentic props and replica plate glass camera. “The photos from this have been amazing,” the bride shares.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

For Ali, spending time in the wedding car alone with her two daughters on the way to the ceremony was one of the day’s highlights. She says, “Just a moment to collectively catch our breath and take stock of the big change happening in our family. I brought my two girls up on my own, and for such a long time it was us three against the world. Although David and I have been together 11 years, this was the moment when things would be different. I’d no longer have the same surname as my girls and that was a big thing for all of us.”

WITH THANKS

The bride tells us, “Our incredible hairdresser, Cat from C Saw Hair in Birkenhead and make-up artist Jen Hunter were amazing. Our ceremony was at 11am, which meant both ladies had to be at our house for 6am! Neither complained, nothing was too much trouble for them, and they really helped to keep things rolling along in the morning.”

Plus, he’s got lovely blue eyes.” Kev says of Hope, “I love how outgoing and funny she is. She can literally talk to anybody, and no conversation with her is ever dull. She has a knack for storytelling and she’s just so intelligent. She is just perfect.”

Kev intended to propose in Paris in 2020, but they never got the chance to go thanks to the pandemic. So, given they couldn’t go on holiday, or to a restaurant, he decided he’d pop the question in one of their favourite places – their own back garden. He’d booked the day off work, but didn’t want Hope to know, and because he was working from home at the time set about his usual business to avoid suspicion. Once she’d left, he jumped into action to set everything up ready for the big moment. He hired a luxury igloo from The Cosy Igloo Company for the garden and cooked Hope’s favourite tea. After they’d eaten he got down on one knee. “I nearly fell over because our garden is so uneven!” Kev remembers.

When the couple started planning their big day they had an idea in their heads of how they wanted it to be. A big church wedding with lots of guests simply wasn’t for them. So, they booked a viewing at Liverpool Town Hall and fell in love with it. “Neither of us had been in the ceremony area before and were completely blown away,” Kev remembers. “We set the date, 5th August, 2022, and paid our deposit within an hour of leaving.” The couple then made enquiries at various different reception venues around the city but struggled finding anywhere to accommodate them and their 30 guests. Finally, they found Frederiks, a jazz bar on Hope Street and booked a table for lunch to get a feel for it. “The vibe was boss, all the staff were really friendly and welcoming, and the food was unreal. I’d recommend the braised beef short ribs if you ever go, it’s so good,” Kev tells us. “The bar manager took us to look at the function room, the Pillbox and we booked it online that night.”

Join us as Hope and Kev give us the lowdown on their big day in the city...

SIMPLY STUNNING

Hope and Kev wanted their day to be simple, with a neutral colour palette. They had a budget in mind and did their very best to keep within it. For wedding favours they opted for charity pins from three organisations close to their hearts – Cancer Research, Alzheimers UK and The British Heart Foundation. The money spent on the pins was donated to the charities and they doubled as place names. To go along with these guests were also given Ferrero Rochers as they waited for the bride and groom to arrive.

The couple decided against traditional centrepieces as they didn’t want anything to go to waste at the end of the day, instead choosing greenery and smaller flowers included in Hope’s bouquet that were scattered along the tables. “This complemented the space and left plenty of room for food and drink,” Kev explains. What was left they collected the next day and composted at home.

Hope’s beautiful bouquet featured sandy, neutral tones featuring flowers grown by the florist, Flourish Flowers. The wedding party wore buttonholes for the men and corsages for the women, all designed using the same palette as the bridal bouquet.

Hope

As a surprise, Hope had a banner made featuring the lyrics to one of their favourite songs, Adieu by Enter Shikari. It read: “Home could be anywhere when I am holding you.” Kev had no idea Hope had planned this and was blown away when he saw it. “It’s one of my favourite memories from the day because of how special that song is to us,” Kev shares.

For the transport, Kev’s parents booked a traditional style wedding car for them. The couple departed Kev’s parents’ house together in the morning. “Our driver on the day was amazing, he went above and beyond for us,” the groom remembers. The pair also hired a coach for their guests to help people get from A to B.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Kev tells us more about the day’s outstanding catering, “We had a meeting with Frederiks’ manager Adam and head chef Jonathan a few months before the wedding. We originally thought this would entail a traditional set menu, basically meat and two veg, but we were so wrong! It was clear straight way that Jonathan loves what he does and was willing to try anything. We finally settled on a Mexican family feast, which was 100 per cent the right choice for us. The food was outstanding and there was enough to feed a small army! Not only this, but Jonathan was extremely accommodating when it came to our guests’ dietary requirements, which included vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options.”

COOL COMFORT

Hope wore a gorgeous gown from the ASOS bridal range. “I didn’t want to spend loads on the dress, because even though it’s an incredibly special day, I didn’t want to wear it once, ruin it, and then put it back in the bag not to be looked at for years,” she explains. “I wanted to be comfortable all day and didn’t want anything too far removed from my personal style. I ended up choosing a white dress for just a touch of tradition, but wanted it to be simple with minimal embellishments and ruffles. It suited me perfectly and I was comfortable all day.” The bride coupled the dress with white Vans, and jewellery that held special meaning. Kev opted for a traditional three-piece suit. “I’m not a fan of tails or hats,” he says. He and his groomsmen had actually planned to wear the same, but there was a mix up when the suits arrived, which ultimately worked in their favour. Kev wore his grey suit with a matching waistcoat, while the other gents all wore black waistcoats with theirs. The groom’s only accessory, gifted

“A friend of mine messaged me the night before and told me to spend as much time with Hope as possible as he regrets not doing the same on his wedding day. Honestly, that’s all I wanted, to spend as much time as I could with Hope, she was my number one priority, and the advice paid off, it was one of the best days of my life.”

to him by his parents, was a brooch bearing a photograph of his late grandparents, which he wore on the inside of his jacket.

The bridesmaids wore a bronze satin slip dress with thigh-high split, low back and scooped low neck with spaghetti straps. Hope gifted them crystal hoop earrings to wear on the day and the ladies had free rein to choose how they wore their hair and make-up so they could feel comfortable.

THE ULTIMATE ALL-ROUNDER

When it came to the entertainment, the couple were keen to have a live performer who would DJ as well. “This proved more difficult than we expected until Hope found ZACKoustic on Instagram. He was perfect for what we wanted, a solo singer and guitarist who also DJed in between performances,” Kev tells us. He was also open to receiving requests on the night, which was super impressive as he’d immediately start playing the song no matter how obscure! “Zack was amazing – his banter with the guests was hilarious and his stage presence and performance were brilliant,” Kev continues.

JUST LIKE TAT

Kev shares some of his favourite memories of the big day, that will forever bring a smile to his face. “One thing I love is that nobody realised that Hope walked down the aisle to the piano version of the theme from Jurassic Park. It’s one of our favourite films and we wanted to put our own little nerdy stamp on the ceremony. The version by The Piano Guys is amazing and gets me every time.

“After the ceremony, we told everybody that we were going for photos near the Liver Building and would meet them at Frederiks. When in actual fact, we booked to get matching tattoos done. We’d spoke to a few tattoo parlours near the Town Hall, and I managed to book Saint & Sinner Tattoo on Cheapside. Our photographer, Jess and videographer, Paddy were with us capturing the moment and now we having something to remember from the day permanently.

“Something else that stood out for us was how nice people were when we were out and about. So many people stopped to congratulate us and wish us well. It just proved to us both why Liverpool is such an amazing city.”

WITH THANKS

As well as the venue team and driver, one of the people that stood out most for the couple was photographer Jessica Lang. Kev says, “She was amazing from the start, right through to when she left. She spent a lot of time calming Hope down when she was getting ready and running around after her. Even when my buttonhole pin broke off, she tried her best to sort it, which was amazing. She was incredibly professional all day long, but also so easy to get on with. It was like we’d known her for years. We’ve even seen her since, she’s just been awesome!”

THE KEY

to my art

Angela and Mark’s wedding was the first to be hosted at the beautiful Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Wirral Images courtesy of Gabriella Csutor

Angela and Mark met through a dating site. “Does anyone meet in real life anymore?” Mark laughs. After spending their first Christmas and New Year together, the couple realised their relationship was forever. Angela says, “I remember not wanting to be apart, even though we only lived 30 minutes from each other.” While Mark shares, “I realised I wanted to marry Angela that New Year’s Eve. Spending time together just felt wonderfully natural.”

By February, Mark had proposed, getting down on one knee while they were out for dinner one night, and the pair began to look for a

venue. A friend who lives in Port Sunlight suggested the Lady Lever Art Gallery to them. “As soon as we walked in with our vision in mind, there was nowhere else that came close” Mark explains. “We wanted something memorable and architecturally the building is stunning. The space in the gallery was perfect for the amount of guests we had, and having looked at the church in Port Sunlight for the ceremony, we wanted a reception venue close by. This was walking distance – perfect.”

Read on as the bride and groom share more happy memories of their big day...

45 REAL WEDDINGS

The church was so beautiful and had been decorated for Christmas a few days before. Plus, we had members of the Liverpool Welsh Choral to sing as we signed the register and an amazing piece of organ music played as we left the church. It left a real impression on us and was only possible through talented friends.

Angela adores Christmas, so there was no other time to get married for us. We didn’t want a summer wedding, plus, once the flat feeling of your wedding being over appears, you can get excited for Christmas.

It sounds like any bride’s worst nightmare, but for me the awful weather really helped to cement the day in my mind. I’ll never forget walking out of the hotel door to the waiting car, seeing the torrential rain and realising I’d have to juggle a rather large dress with its deliberately grand train into it. I had the hotel staff, the driver and my dad as a team to navigate my way into the Rolls Royce. Never mind getting out and into the church.

We wanted a winter feel, but not a Christmas theme. Navy, rich burgundy and plenty of greens and whites formed our wedding palette.

To complement the gallery space, we incorporated easels of different sizes into our venue styling, using them to hold our signs and place settings.

The favours, placed on easels, were Lego mini-figure brooches for the men, and mini paper rose brooches for the women made from pages of old books.

“Look at venues first and everything else will come together.”

The florist’s arrangements matched the Art Deco feel, with low displays in glass goblets on each table – they smelled amazing.

“Being the first couple to hold a wedding reception at Lady Lever felt really special and we were honoured to have been allowed.”

Our wedding breakfast was a three-course wintery menu provided by the gallery’s in-house catering team. All the guests raved for ages afterwards about the amazing soup! The day was non-stop torrential rain so something warming was much needed.

My dress was designed by Phoenix Gowns, but it wasn’t the one I’d originally gone in to try on as I had my heart set on a Ronald Joyce dress. I was looking for something to fit the venue. With the church’s beautiful stained-glass window and grand aisle, I needed something to make a statement. Ballgown it was!

What sold me on the Phoenix gown was the fact that it could be customised in house, so I chose to add lots more lace to the sleeves and create a lace back (it was originally key hole). I didn’t want a veil, so I accessorised with simple silver and pearl jewellery with a large sparkly hair clip.

The groom wore the same as his groomsmen – a navy suit with white waistcoat, red cravat tie and red pocket square, all matching the flower colours. We had one bridesmaid, so we were able to show her a lot of styles and let her choose. We really struggled to find anything suitable in the shops, but as soon as we found UK Flower Girl Boutique online, we had hope. She wore a bohemian-style, long-sleeved dress in sage green. It was floaty at the bottom, and she loved it.

47 REAL WEDDINGS

“We went on honeymoon to Yorkshire a couple of months after the wedding. We stayed in an Airbnb townhouse giving us some much needed time together. The weather, just like the wedding day, was atrocious... I think it follows us around!”

Our first dance was unusual. Everything else had been tasteful and classic, but instead of a romantic slow dance, we moved to How Much Love by 80s rock brand Vixen. The addition of an inflatable guitar for the solo section was a surprise even to me!

We had a playlist running throughout the evening and our guests enjoyed sitting, chatting and socialising, as well as wandering around the gallery, glass in hand, taking a peek at the treasures on the walls.

2023 SO FAR...

Marina at Sweet Palette (www.sweetpalette.co.uk) in Liverpool says: “Vegan cakes have been extremely popular and the most frequently asked about when my couples have booked for 2023, so we’re offering people a regular or vegan option for all of our cakes. Most of our nearlyweds though have been looking for semi-naked cakes, which have become the most popular design for us. Decorated with fresh flowers, sometimes with a touch of gold or silver foil, these usually boast a buttercream finish with rustic detail or a rough edge.

“Another of our favourite designs is the stone-effect fondant cake, which has a beautiful marbling to it with great texture and loads of detail. It’s often presented with dried flower foliage, creating an amazing look.

“For me, new cake trends include wafer paper décor such as spheres or sails, often accompanied by gold foil or gold toppers. Another gorgeous trend is palette knife flower painting, which is a real work of art. I’ve had a few enquiries about these lately, especially from couples who want to combine two different cultures into their theme and bring a bit of bright colour to their cake. Lambeth cakes are proving very popular too. These create a very vintage look, give plenty of detail and can be done in any colour scheme. Absolutely gorgeous!

“Finally, some brides have been asking about cake buffets. Our personalised cupcakes, cookies and cakesicles have gone down a storm as part of a wedding buffet or as individually packaged favours.”

TOP OF THE BAKES

Nicola from Cheshire-based Boutique Bakery (www.boutiquebakery.co.uk) shares her top trend predictions to look out for.

Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023 is Viva Magenta, and I look forward to seeing this and lots of accompanying brights at weddings this year. On cakes, it’s going to be all about the pinks, either in sugar flower form or on coloured tiers.

Abstract cakes will continue to be popular with wafter paper, plenty of texture and rice paper sails all featuring in supercontemporary styles. If you’re planning on having a cake decorated with flowers though, whether they be fresh or sugar, then a free and loose arrangement is on trend. These typically follow the four principles of Ikebana: a fresh approach, movement, balance and harmony.

Differently sized and shaped tiers are also going to give your cake a more modern look, with super-tall round layers combined with hexagonal and square ones.

Spacers and separators are a great way to increase the impact of your big-day bake, without over catering on portions. Clear acrylic spacers are a subtle way of doing this, or you can max out with floating dividers for the total wow factor!

SMALL AND SWEET

Daljeet from At Home Bakes (https://athomebakes.co.uk) in North Wales talks intimate nuptials and mouthwatering cake displays.

“This year brings a lot of changes for everyone, including for our couples. Many are opting for more intimate weddings with fewer guests. So, we’re seeing many two- and three-tiered cakes, with soon-to-be weds specifying that they’d like one of them to take home and keep. Perhaps this is tradition coming back around with couples wanting to savour every moment of their day, including the sweet showstopper. Regardless, I’m here for it!

“We’re seeing more of a focus too on displays, including the stand, floral elements and more to make a feature of the cake as a focal point. I think this will only continue with the availability of props increasing and becoming more widely used.

“My couples are coming to me with a firm idea of what they want already in mind, so over time I’ve been able to build my collection of offers and products up to reflect that.”

SPRINGTIME SPECIAL HOT TOPIC

This issue we asked the experts how to inject your wedding days with the spirit of spring

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Jen Walker from JW Ceremonies (www.jwceremonies.com) says:

A springtime wedding can be the most fun! There are so many colour palettes to choose from to mix and match; both pastels and bright colours work amazingly well with the gorgeous light spring brings.

People assume that summer is the perfect time for an outdoor wedding; but the truth is, with the summer sun, wedding attire for both brides and grooms in the heat, and the many seasonal insects, it can create some issues. In comparison, with all the beautiful blossom trees in bloom, the sun

FUN IN THE SUN

Peter and Anne Henney from Go Cruise & Travel (anneandpeter@gocruiseandtravel.co.uk) say: For a honeymoon at this time of year, we’d recommend a trip across the pond. North America and the Caribbean are great destinations for honeymooners looking for the holiday of a lifetime.

The weather there is fantastic in the spring and honeymoon options vary right across the experience spectrum, from fun breaks on a cruise to the Orlando theme parks, and endless beaches to historical and natural delights. Why not include a bit of each in a two-centre holiday?

Cruising used to be seen as a holiday for the more mature traveller but now, more than ever, the vessels are designed for the younger generation, while providing the itinerary for honeymooners of all ages. There’s something for everyone depending on your idea of

shining and a cool breeze – its springtime that makes the perfect outdoor wedding ceremony season! But yes, with our British weather and spring showers, you may also need a plan B to bring the outside in.

Floral arches and aisle displays bursting with seasonal flowers can not only create the springtime wow factor you’re looking for, but save you some serious pennies by using the season’s natural abundance. These types of displays are perfect to repurpose for your wedding breakfast and they transition into the evening, saving you even more on your décor budget too!

a dream break. You might love the idea of a Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbean or Virgin, along with a beach break in Barbados or St. Pete’s Beach near Tampa, or even a theme park break in Orlando. Alternatively, a Celebrity Cruise in the Caribbean might be more your vibe, or a trip down the Mississippi on a luxurious river boat for music and culture lovers, including New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville. Take in the sights of period plantation homes, Graceland and the history of the South. Theme parks in Florida can also be added.

One option for the historians or adventure lovers among you is a visit to the Rockies together with a cruise to Alaska – definitely a once-in-alifetime experience. Who knows, perhaps any of the above can be an anniversary rendevous as well! We cover holidays on land and sea for everyone, which can be created as bespoke packages.

55 EXPERT ADVICE
Getty mages

SPRING HAS SPRUNG

Julia Mutch from Meols Hall (https://meolshall.co.uk) says: We embrace the seasons here and following the frosty winter months, we welcome spring and the arrival of lighter days. Is there a better season to celebrate your wedding day? The Tithe Barn is set in a hundred acres of private parkland with wild meadows and enchanting woods for you to explore, so there are endless idyllic settings for beautiful photographs of your special day.

As the weather grows warmer and the grounds begin to come alive and burst into colour with bluebells, crocuses and daffodils. We associate the season with shades of purple, yellow and soft sage green – there are so many pretty blooms that you can perfectly incorporate into your springtime wedding décor.

Since the British weather can still be unpredictable, an indoor/ outdoor option is essential and a thoughtful idea is to provide a basket with blankets or shawls for guests in case conditions turn chilly. They could complement your colour palette and be tied with a pretty ribbon. Your guests will appreciate being able to stay cosy.

Spring is a beautiful season for colour palette inspiration, with fresh pastels that are so easily translated into pretty bridesmaids dresses, decorations, wedding stationery and table settings. It’s a lovely idea to gift your centrepieces at the end of the evening to special guests allowing them to enjoy your big day for a little longer.

SHOWERED WITH LOVE

Hannah Mayo Caligari from Event In A Tent (www.event-in-a-tent.co.uk) says: Spring is all about new life. Every colour is brighter, and the grass is so much greener. With this in mind and in relation to outdoor venues, such as our tipis, it’s the perfect time to dress every single beam with bright flowers and greenery. Foliage wrapped around the poles looks so beautiful and really sets off a springtime wedding. Adding centrepieces with spring flowers such as daffodils, hyacinths and irises also brings the vibrancy inside. Outside, plant pots and garden furniture lend themselves perfectly to the theme you’ve laid out within.

Clear spring days are great and ideally what you’d wish for on your wedding day, but if the April showers show up, they don’t have to ruin your outdoor nuptials. Tipis are so versatile – if you planned to have it all open but feel this is too much of a risk at this time of year, you can opt for a clear extension. This lets all the light in to make sure your venue still feels bright and airy, but also keeps your guests nice and dry.

NEW LIFE

Debbie Bennett from Lilac and Thyme (www.lilacandthyme.co.uk) says: Spring is the start of a fresh, new beginning, just like the journey you’re taking together. This time of year resonates warmer, longer days, beautiful florals and hope of brighter things to come, and the season’s flowers are nature’s most fragrant charms.

Here at Lilac and Thyme, we believe through the grace, flow and colours of spring flowers, we can bring a romantic and elegant addition to your day.

Glamour and gladrags

Have your wedding party comfortable, confident and dressed to impress

When it comes to the big day, the question on everyone’s lips is: what am I going to wear? It’s difficult enough to decide for yourself, let alone being responsible for another group of people, your closest confidants, who make up your bridal party. So, where to begin? It sounds selfish, but if you can’t be on your wedding day, when can you: with yourselves. The reason for this is that your look will have the greatest influence on that of your bridesmaids and groomsmen. If you’ve opted for a boho vibe, you’ll want to look for a similar style for your best gals. Likewise, if the groom has fallen in love with a pastel, tweed, three-piece, dressing the chaps in tuxes won’t quite be the ticket! And, of course, in deciding upon your own look, you’ll already have in mind whether it suits your venue and overall vision for the day. We asked some of the region’s experts for their ideas on what’s hot for 2023. Read on to find out more...

HERE COME THE GIRLS

Your bride tribe will naturally be made up of the ladies closest to you, your inner circle, the ones you hold dear. So, because you love them its only natural for you to want them to feel comfortable and enjoy your big day alongside you. The best advice we can give you then is to be as open-minded as you can about their attire. Giving them as much flexibility as possible when looking at dresses will make them feel happier when shopping, ensuring a relaxed and superfun process. Don’t worry, you don’t have to let go of the reins completely. Just giving the girls some parameters will set you all well on the way to smiley faces on the day. For example, you might decide you can’t compromise on the colour, which most will be happy to concede as long as they’re wearing a style that matches their vibe and personality.

There are ways to get creative with colour too. For example, do you want to select a different colour from your main palette for each maid to wear? Perhaps you fancy going floral, which is stunning for a boho-inspired day. The choice is yours. There are also fun ways to mirror this in the groomsmen’s attire with pocket squares and ties to complement the bridesmaids and that’s just your starter for 10!

Heather Laver from The Bridal Lounge in Northwich tells us more, “For bridesmaids’ dresses this year, people are looking for more floaty styles with chiffon skirts. They create great movement in photos, and are also comfortable without restricting movement.

“The bride tribe themselves come in all shapes and sizes, so quite often brides let their party choose varying styles, but in the same colour. This keeps them all to a theme, without making anyone feel too uncomfortable in their outfit.

“Another trend we have our eyes on at the moment is for bridesmaids to each wear the same dress but each in a slightly different hue of the same colour. Again, this creates a lovely link between them, but as everyone can wear a shade that best suits them, all of the ladies will feel confident and at ease.”

SUITED AND BOOTED

Grooms, groomsmen, and the fathers of the soon-to-be weds too, are enjoying the shopping just as much as the leading ladies. And why not, given the wealth of variety that’s becoming more readily available. Men’s fashion has come a long way in the last decade, along with a greater acceptance of breaking wedding traditions and protocols.

Some of our favourite grooms’ looks here at Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding are those rocking their beards and tattoos, in pink or patterned shirts – oh-so cool, and totally individual. There’s much more scope for you chaps to really express your personalities through your attire than there used to be. Think what you’d choose to wear on a dayto-day basis and elevate it – you do you!

Equally as popular as lightweight summer suits and rustic-vibe tweed is the more traditional, but oh-so dapper, tuxedo. Thanks to Daniel Craig we’ve been seeing more and more grooms sporting bespoke velvet tux jackets – unbeliveably chic and something you can keep and wear again

well beyond the big day.

Mix-and-match suiting is also set to be popular for 2023, with grooms wearing a tweed or other patterned jacket with plain trousers and waistcoat. It’s a modern look that helps you stand out from the crowd. For variation between you, the man-of-the-hour, and your entourage, dress the gents in waistcoats to match your jacket, with their jackets matching their trousers.

Peaky Blinders has a lot to answer for with many gents taking the series’ signature look as their groomswear inspiration. Think timeless, classic, early 20th-century style, baker boy cap, tweed three-piece suit, crisp white penny collar shirt and brogues. Finish the look with a pocket watch (start dropping hints to your spouse-to-be now).

According to Moss Bros the man-in-black look is in for 2023, thanks to the latest influx of 90s trends. With black suit, shirt and tie, it’s moody, romantic and certainly packs a punch.

Kara Sillitoe from Peter Posh Suits in Knutsford shares her top three tips for putting together your groom's attire, as well as that of your party. • Try a checked waistcoat or patterned tie to stand out from your groomsmen. • Always keep an open mind when choosing a suit. We have a number of gents saying they wouldn’t wear a tailcoat, but once they try it on, they love it!

• Tweed is extremely popular right now, and looks fantastic with a liberty print tie.

MUM’S THE WORD

Mothers of the nearlyweds will likely be feeling the pressure. As the matriarchs of your respective families, eyes will be on them too as the traditional hosts and proud parent. They may feel under the kosh to represent themselves well on such a big day for you both. What’s more, if mum’s style is generally more laid back, she might be self-conscious or uncomfortable in occasionwear. The best thing to do is offer support and a helping hand with the fashion choices. Plus, a shopping trip together could prove to be a beautiful mother-and-daughter (or son) bonding experience. Offer plenty of reassurance and help her to feel a million dollars on the day.

As women we all have our body insecurities, and your mum is likely no different, so help her to pick out something in a style she’s at home in, but elevated with an air of sophistication. If she hasn’t worn skirts since her school uniform, there’s no law that says she has to wear one on your wedding day. There are plenty of oh-so chic trouser suits out there and she’ll look just as beautiful, feminine and smart. After all, separates are a girls best friend when it comes to finding the most flattering combination.

The key is to complement the bridal party, not to compete with it.

So, be aware of colour palettes, themes and what the rest of the squad is wearing. A key consideration also is the time of year. What fabrics will mum be most comfortable in? Soft, floaty dresses are better for the summer, versus something more structured or tailored for the colder months. It’s also worth her thinking about what she'll need throughout the whole day, such as a light jacket or bolero that can be removed once you come in from the photos, and put back on for the sparkler send off.

Hats are synonymous with the mother-of-the-bride, but can be a bit of a palaver, not to mention expensive for the length of time mum is likely to have it on. But if her heart’s set on it, then that’s what she should have. Alternatively, fascinators are super-smart and are easier to keep on all day. Accessories are the most fun part of putting an outfit together. They can be the star of the show, dressing up a simple outfit, or subtly complementing something more bold. Who doesn’t love a matching handbag and shoes combo?! On that note, be sure to advise mum to ensure her footwear of choice is comfortable. She’ll be on her feet for a large portion of the day, mingling and welcoming long lost relations and dearly loved friends, so it’s important to make sure her feet still feel happy enough to join you on the dancefloor.

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

Q&A Fashion and beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

FRESH FACED

What hair and make-up look would you suggest for an English country garden style springtime wedding?

Johanna says: As we enter the spring wedding season the look should be fresh and radiant, especially for an English country garden feel. Why not switch up the traditional bridal make-up look to achieve those spring vibes?

We want to move away from the wintry, heavy liners, smoky eyes and matte lips; swapping them for a fresh-faced dewy, soft glam appearance. As a spring bride you should look radiant, as though you’re glowing from within. The emphasis therefore, will be on fresh skin, pinched cheeks, natural, feathered brows and earthy bronze tones to contour the eyes. Finish off the look with a sheer natural lip. The colour will be determined by your skin tone, consisting of pale pinks and a wide range of nudes. It’s best to choose a hairstyle that will leave you feeling great throughout and will survive the fresh spring weather. Whether you’re

thinking of going for hair up or hair down, there are a wide range of dos to choose from. Soft waves, straight and sleek hair, relaxed tousled buns, up dos, or the on-trend wavy ponytail.

Flowers make the best hair accents for a spring wedding and they’ll complement the relaxed garden theme perfectly.

CEREMONY TO CELEBRATIONS

How can I switch up my bridal look from day to evening without splurging on two dresses?

Heather says: This year, detachable sleeves are in! There’s something so nice about a two-in-one dress with sleeves for the ceremony, and a more casual sleeveless look for the party. It’s also useful if you don’t know what the weather is going to be like and you want a little more coverage.

Detachable trains offer a similar two-in-one look, transforming a dramatic, statement gown into a slinky evening silhouette. Plus, there are hundreds of options available.

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS

This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.

L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.

The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

IN NEED OF A BOOST?

Green mandarin essential oil is packed with antioxidants and is known for its rejuvenating and brightening properties. It leaves dull skin looking luminous and radiant, perfect for reviving your complexion and bringing a gorgeous glow to it. That’s why the clever folk at Decléor have harnessed its power to create its Green Mandarin Glowing Collection.

TRIED & TESTED

Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:

“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.

This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20

SHINE BRIGHT

I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk

LUSCIOUS LASHES

LEGIT Lashes is Huda

Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com

eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

eSalon is reinventing the way we colour our hair by creating a fully-customised professional-grade home hair colour that’s made to order and shipped directly to the door. Find out more at www.esalon.co.uk

BAN THE BLOAT

Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day

One of the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding. There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.

CHEW PROPERLY

Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30

times to allow the gut to digest with ease.

EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS

Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.

START WITH SOMETHING BITTER

Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.

AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS

It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.

LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS

If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

90

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

CITY ESCAPES 93

SELF-CARE Soothing

Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day

94

It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.

That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.

Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.

The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.

For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.

There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.

“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”

After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.

Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.

Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.

I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.

For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.

At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.

“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”

Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.

I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.

As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”

Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.

Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.

As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”

Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. WELLBEING 95

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Located on the banks of the picture-perfect River Thames in Surrey, just 10 minutes from Windsor, The

on Thames is a modern fourstar hotel with an award-winning spa offering.

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
