THE MOLE RESORT LUXURY HOTEL AND LODGES COMING TO DEVON

L+R Hotels has launched The Mole Resort as the latest venture in a portfolio which spans the UK, Continental Europe, the US and the Caribbean, in many of the world’s most sought-after locations.

Coming to Devon in the summer of 2023, The Mole Resort is a luxury lodge destination set in 125 acres of countryside next to the River Mole, with Exmoor, Dartmoor and the world-class North Devon beaches nearby. The resort combines stunning lodges, hotel rooms and superb dining with a myriad of activities.

Fifteen premium eco-conscious lodges are already complete and available for booking along with hotel rooms at the existing Highbullen Hotel. By Summer 2023, The Mole Resort will expand to 58 lodges and feature a fully-refurbished hotel as part of the £23 million redevelopment investment.

Adrian Bradley, leading the project for L+R Hotels said: “Our simple message is ‘fabulous stays and active days’, which is exactly what The Mole Resort is all about. Not only will our guests be able to relax in their lodges surrounded by spectacular countryside views, but there’s plenty for them to do too. From swimming, fitness classes, golf and tennis, to pickleball and trout fishing, it’s the perfect place for families, groups and couples to do as much or as little as they like and our resort team can’t wait to welcome them.”

Guests can choose a hotel room from £80 per night, or one of the self-catering lodges, which sleeps up to eight people from £219 per person (based on eight people sharing a lodge for three nights).

All lodges boast a large deck with outdoor dining, hot tubs, fully-equipped kitchens and superb beds plus many of the lodges accommodate dogs. During a stay at The Mole Resort, guests have the flexibility of self-catering or can eat in the resort restaurants enjoying seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients.

NEW HEAD CHEF AT SCARLET HOTEL,

CORNWALL

The Scarlet Hotel has appointed Jack Clayton as the latest head chef of the hotel’s sea view restaurant in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall. Since starting his career in 2009, Jack has achieved 3 Rosettes and 2 Bib Gourmand awards. His move to Scarlet comes as an opportunity to advance a lifelong passion for sustainability, fusing flavours and foraging.

Perched on the southwest coastal path, Scarlet’s restaurant offers captivating views of the coastline, easily explored from the hotel. Stroll from coast to cuisine and discover an exquisite meal of seasonal, responsibly sourced food alongside slow-aged wine, expertly paired by the in-house sommelier Nick Bryant. The restaurant is open to both residents and non-residents for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner daily. The day menu is a casual affair which seamlessly transitions into more of a fine dining experience during the evening with a seven-course tasting menu, inspired by Jack’s commitments to organic local produce. Highlights of the menu include white gazpacho featuring almond,

GREEN MICHELIN-STARRED CHEF JEFFREY ROBINSON JOINS NEW ESTABLISHMENT HARBOURHOUSE

Jeffrey Robinson, one of the first chefs to have attained a green Michelin star, has announced that he is joining the Devon-founded business beachhouse group as executive head chef of their new Cornish outpost – harbourhouse in Flushing, Cornwall.

In early summer 2023, the team will open their new collaborative ‘force of nature’ proposition at harbourhouse, setting a new standard in Cornish hyper-local dining and hospitality.

Tamara Costin created the original restaurant, bar and café, beachhouse, on the National Trust-protected South Milton Sands in the South Hams. Alongside her partner William Speed, she opened schoolhouse, situated at the heart of the wild and enigmatic Flete Estate, garnering food critic acclaim and a cult-like local and national following.

The couple recently announced their purchase of the former Seven Stars pub in the pretty Cornish village of Flushing. They are currently reshaping the free house building which is set right on the waterfront.

LUXURY FAMILY HOTELS HAS LAUNCHED THEIR WAGGY TAILS TEA TIME AND A LA BARK MENU

Luxury Family Hotels are pleased to announce the launch of their new Waggy Tails Tea Time and A La Bark menu. Whether couples and families are heading to the coast of Cornwall or setting off for a cosy getaway in the Wiltshire countryside, Luxury Family Hotels encourage their guests to bring their furry friends along with them. More now than ever, there is no excuse to leave them behind with the collection’s newly launched Waggy Tails Tea Time and posh-pooch A La Bark menu!

Served in each of the five Luxury Family Hotel lounges, or outside during the warmer months, the Waggy Tails Tea Time is a real feast. Start healthy with paw-dit-ites of crunchy carrots, apples, and cheese followed by lick-a-licious liver cake, pawnut butter biscuits and canine carrot cake with pawsome frosting. This is washed down with a thirst-quenching bowl of H20 and a puppacino!

For the pooches whose parents keep an eye on their waistline, Luxury Family Hotels has also launched their A La Bark menu. Choose from a barkingly good beef supper or a waggingly delicious chicken dinner comprising of slow-cooked chicken in doggy gravy with crushed potatoes and vegetables. For something sweet, finish with a homemade peanut butter bone-shaped biscuit or frosty paws ice cream. Also available is a beer for dogs which is non-alcoholic, non-carbonated, and packed

cucumber, grape, mint and garlic, and sea trout pastrami complemented by horseradish, cucumber mustard seeds and soda bread to start. Mains showcase locally caught fish, such as whole John Dory served with leek, parsley, lemon butter sauce and herring eggs and dessert choices range from chocolate choux with hazelnut, dulce de leche and vanilla ice cream to peach with mascarpone parfait, almond cookie and rosemary.

Jack’s philosophy for the Scarlet restaurant is centred on showcasing the journey of each ingredient, from the catching of the fish to the artful presentation of each dish. The menu at Scarlet is a daily celebration of nature and to this end, Jack’s plans include coastal foraging courses for hotel guests and achieving a Michelin green star in 2023.

Alongside Jeffrey’s appointment, they are also announcing the evolution of the Flushing establishment’s name, harbourhouse, that honours the centuries-long history of marine trading. Tamara Costin says, “Cornwall has been on our list for a very long time and one of our favourite dining destinations has always been The New Yard Restaurant. Now with Jeffrey joining us at the rechristened harbourhouse, we’ve had an immediate meeting of minds, philosophies and passions, and our coming together is like a simple, but certain, synergy.”

Jeffrey Robinson has been executive chef of The New Yard Restaurant and The Pantry on the Lizard Peninsula in southwest Cornwall since 2016 which became one of the first restaurants in the UK to be awarded a green Michelin Star for gastronomy and sustainability practices, alongside a 3 Rosette achievement. There are still only 23 green Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, and Jeffrey has focussed on serving his take on modern Cornish cuisine using ingredients grown on his own farm which were created using a philosophy of permaculture.

Jeffrey says, “I have been looking for the right opportunity to grow my sustainability-focused practice and, as if by design, Tamara and William came along at this critical juncture. I’m so inspired by the opportunity to build the new harbourhouse kitchen together, to co-develop our shared passion for hyper-local sourcing and to push Cornish cuisine.”

with vitamins and minerals. The A La Bark menu has been carefully curated with a doggy’s taste buds in mind, but also their health. All dishes are homemade using ingredients from the hotel’s kitchen*.

Dogs like to dress up smart for dinner, which is why Luxury Family Hotels have prizes up for grabs for the bestdressed doggies! Turn up for tea looking dapper, and share a social post using #WaggyTailsAtLFH and be in with a chance of winning a paw-fect prize!

Each of the five Luxury Family Hotels in the UK lends itself perfectly to family getaways which include the furry kind. With huge grounds for adventures and exploring and many beautiful walks and trails on each of the hotel’s doorsteps, dogs will want for nothing. Hounds will love walking in the rolling countryside or by the coast and Luxury Family Hotels has something for everyone and every breed.

*except the frosty paws ice cream which is sourced from a reputable supplier

Waggy Tails Tea Time is served for £15 per pooch all year round at all five Luxury Family Hotels and includes all the treats listed above. Dishes from the A La Bark menu vary from £2 to £5.

WINS AT NATIONAL AWARDS

Newquay-based business Moore Movement has managed to take the top prize for Best Fitness Business Cornwall at the 2022 England’s Business Awards. The award comes after the owner of the personal training facility, Brendan Moore, set up the business a year ago.

Operating out of Nansledan, Newquay, the fitness studio aims to make a positive impact on people’s lives through its offering of a bespoke mini facility for private and small-group personal training where Brendan works as the head personal trainer.

Moore’s vision is to focus on the quality of the service being offered to the individuals and groups that he coaches, and it is this attention to providing unmatchable service that got him nominated for England’s Business Awards in 2022.

Moore Movement was nominated by one of their members, at which point a mystery shopper from the awards committee is sent to assess the business and voting is opened up for the public to also place their votes. Moore Movement then made it to the final, going up against two other fitness businesses from Cornwall, and Brendan was delighted to come back to Newquay having won Cornwall’s Best Fitness Business 2022.

Brendan says, “We are so happy to be able to bring the top prize back to Newquay with us. We pride ourselves in offering a professional, motivating and supportive service to all our members with a modern facility and top-of-the-range equipment. This award reflects the hard work to get to the position that the business is in today, and I am proud of those who have helped us to achieve this.”

He continues, “From the start, we have constantly focused on maintaining good relationships with all of the members at Moore Movement, and this award shows that they appreciate the effort we put in day in, day out to make our training service as good as it can be. I’d like to invite anyone that is looking to make some positive changes to their health and fitness to give our 30-Day trial a go, which gives you access to our full Small Group PT membership at a fraction of the price.”

NEWQUAY SKINCARE CO WINS UK PLATINUM BEAUTY AWARDS

A Newquay-based restaurant owner who was inspired by her lockdown sea swimming adventures to start a new eco-skincare line has won a top UK award for natural products.

Kelly Mather, co-founder and co-owner of the much-loved Kahuna restaurant, was driven to create Me&thesea Skincare, a product range that is sustainable, eco-friendly, recyclable and plastic-free, all with a transparent supply chain.

Lockdown meant Kelly, and her partner Ryan, had to close Kahuna, and Kelly found she now had the time to focus on her dream of formulating and creating her skincare as a business. She had already taken up wild swimming as a hobby and inspired by her sea-based daily adventures, coupled with the need to nourish her skin afterwards, she became aware of how her current habits surrounding her skincare purchases were damaging to the natural environment.

As a result, Kelly set about researching and teaching herself all aspects of the skincare production process. From sourcing ingredients, formulating and testing each product, to hand making each batch, filling and packaging and certifying the range, she worked day and night with a mission to establish a business around her inspiration. Her range now sports an impressive 10 products which she sells online, at local markets and at a local health food shop which she has built a relationship with and now stocks most of her range. Kelly focused hard on building her brand, a website, social media and a set of industry relationships.

Me&thesea Skincare was recently shortlisted in the Janey Loves Platinum Awards, which highlight and bring the best in natural products and services into the mainstream. The awards were founded by Janey Grace Lee, a UK natural health expert and former co-host of the BBC Radio 2 show, Steve Wright in the Afternoon. The Janey Loves Platinum Awards focus on selecting the best health and well-being products in the United Kingdom. The selection and judging processes are based upon real-life testing by a renowned panel of judges made up of industry experts, key trendsetters, celebrities, skin nutritionists and respected top professionals in their fields who know only the best when it comes to health and well-being products.

Kelly’s Lemongrass and Lime Coffee Scrub won a Platinum Award for Best Body Care and Bath Product in the Skincare and Beauty category. Kelly Mather says, “I have always been interested in beauty, maybe even a little obsessed. The power of plants in beauty fascinates me and making my own body scrubs and massage oils have always been a hobby of mine. Then lockdown happened and, for once, I had the time, and energy, to pour into my long-time vision – and Me&thesea skincare was born. The natural ingredients I source are sustainably harvested. You can feel the goodness from the first application. This is the way beauty should be. It should be good for us and good for the planet at the same time.”

Kelly continues, “Winning the Janey Loves Platinum Award is a major achievement. It has confirmed my belief that I’m on the right track in every way with my own eco-skincare range. It also inspires yet more consumer trust in my brand, given the rigorous expert panel testing through the Janey Loves Platinum Awards process. Plus, as an added extra, it’s made my husband and daughter feel very proud, which is lovely as they’ve been super supportive with Me&thesea Skincare.”

DEVON PROPERTY LISTED IN THE TOP 50 BOUTIQUE HOTELS IN THE UK

The Top 50 Boutique Hotels in the UK were recently unveiled featuring Devon-based hotel Lympstone Manor. The muchanticipated list is curated and voted by leading industry experts, hoteliers, travel writers and influencers.

This year’s Highest New Entrant is Lympstone Manor at number five on the list. Based in Devon, this country house is set on 28 acres of grounds home to its 10-acre vineyard, elegant estuary suites and cosy shepherd huts by the water. Chef Michael Caines MBE heads up the Michelin-starred kitchen and focuses on seasonality and local produce.

Chris Lowe, group director of hospitality and manufacturing at William Reed says, “We’re delighted to be revealing this fantastic new list and see such strong movement in this year’s Top 50 Boutique Hotels. Our number one has jumped up 18 places from last year and the highest new entry is number 5 which is a testament to those teams’ stellar efforts. With staycations continuing to be a focus for Britons, it is encouraging to see such a strong regional presence this year and such a wide range of unique hotel experiences to enjoy.”

The Boutique Hotel list follows on from the success of the Top 50 Cocktail Bars, as well as the long-running and ever-popular Top 50 Gastropubs. Now, consumers have a complete and definitive guide to where to eat, drink, and sleep throughout the UK.

GWEL AN MOR SCOOPS ACCOLADES AT CORNWALL TOURISM AWARDS

Gwel an Mor, based in the Cornish village of Portreath, has been awarded Bronze in the Holiday Park of the Year category at the recent Cornwall Tourism Awards. The park was awarded Silver in the Wedding Venue of the Year category and also picked up Silver in the Spa & Wellbeing Experience of the Year award.

The resort was acquired by Cove UK in March 2021, which operates holiday and residential parks in the US and now runs a series of UK resorts including Seal Bay Resort – the UK’s largest park – and the award-winning Argyll Holidays portfolio.

Since acquiring Gwel an Mor, Cove UK has built on the park’s existing success by investing in new facilities and accommodation, ensuring it remains a luxury destination for holidaymakers coming to Cornwall.

The resort is home to Feadon Wildlife Centre which runs various wildlife experiences, a seafood restaurant, Cornwall’s largest indoor soft play area and climbing walls, an indoor archery range, a tennis court and a swimming pool.

Another pivotal part of the resort that won an award was the Wellbeing

Spa, which boasts the Elemental Herbology product range which secured the spa a Silver award. Another Silver accolade was given to the wedding barn and yurt, where many beautiful ceremonies take place each year.

Blair Cowan, general manager at Gwel an Mor, said, “The team at Gwel an Mor strive to provide a five-star experience for our guests, holiday home owners and event attendees, and it is brilliant that this effort has been recognised.”

Blair continues, “We’re delighted to win an award not only in the holiday park of the year category but also as a leading wedding and spa venue. Gwel an Mor’s role as a leading wedding venue is really important within the community and region, and we always want local people to come and enjoy their time with us during such special life events.”

HOLWELL FARMHOUSE IN BAMPTON, DEVON OPENS AS A WEDDING VENUE

Located just north of Bampton close to Exmoor National Park, Holwell Farmhouse has been transformed into a luxurious rural retreat and a wedding and events venue, thanks to a sensitive renovation by owner Ollie Greenslade.

Set in 65 acres of stunning Devonshire countryside, Holwell Farmhouse was purchased by Ollie in August 2019. Two years and a sensitive restoration later (navigating numerous lockdowns), the property is now a sought-after, exclusive hire venue for weddings, family gatherings,

celebrations and corporate retreats very much connected to its surrounding countryside and wildlife.

Ollie says, “From drawing an idea to creating a physical and finished product is a great feeling and sense of accomplishment. Holwell Farmhouse was formed by the love of the outdoors, wildlife, farming and people. Combining all of those, you end up with a rural space for groups and families to relax in yet explore and a safe haven for nature. We’re so excited to open the doors and to finally put this farmhouse on the map.”

UPTON BARN & WALLED GARDEN, CULLOMPTON, DEVON

This award-winning, exclusive-use wedding venue offers an indoor and outdoor ceremony space in the beautiful Walled Garden under the Oak Arbour, and in the Cider Barn for year-round celebrations.

A recent addition is The Paddock, a stylish light-filled space providing the bridal party with a spa-worthy environment to get ready in, overlooking the rolling hills and patchwork fields of the Devonshire countryside through the vast floor-to-ceiling windows. The carefully considered interior design details and colour schemes have created ultra-luxe spaces equipped with everything the bridal party will need to get ready on the morning of the wedding including a hair-washing basin and hair and make-up stations. There are also showers, fluffy towels, premium toiletries and plenty of little luxuries creating a homefrom-home feel. This additional space is available to hire from 7 am until the ceremony begins when the wedding coordinator will accompany everyone down to the main venue for the wedding entrance.

The Stalls are located just behind The Paddock and offer guests somewhere seriously stylish to stay on the night of the wedding in new

accommodation pods set within a woodland glade. These rustic retreats with Hygge-inspired décor have been designed in a minimalist Scandistyle. The Stalls can host up to eight people (two per pod) and are automatically booked for the night of the wedding to retain exclusivity. The venue marries the rustic charm of a Devon farm with a modern finish. Included in the wedding packages are the hire of trestle tables and chairs, a large oak barrel to display the cake, all glassware, a woodburning stove and logs, a firepit plus outdoor tables, chairs and parasols.

The venue’s hand-picked collection of local caterers includes Pickle Shack and Mulberry Catering Co, both family-run businesses using independent suppliers and seasonal produce. Both work hard to ensure minimal food wastage.

DEER’S LEAP RETREAT, SOUTH MOLTON, DEVON

This stunning wedding venue is surrounded by 15 acres of farmland, situated on the edge of Exmoor’s national park which provides stunning vistas of rolling fields and moorland from everywhere on the property. The stone barn features a private bar with comfy sofas and chairs, exposed wooden beams offset by cartwheels draped in fairylights, stone-flagged flooring, a wood-burning fire and large doors opening out on to the sun-drenched, south-facing patio that overlooks the lake and gazebo. The patio area provides a relaxed space for champagne and cocktails and garden games can be enjoyed on the large adjacent lawn. An extended terrace outside the barn and the column heaters and firepits provide warmth during the balmy evenings. At dusk, fairylights and festoon lighting lead guests down to the lantern-lit lake for fireworks reflecting in the water fired to the couple’s choice of song.

Ceremonies take place in the wooden lakeside gazebo perched on the

side of the lake surrounded by rolling countryside. It accommodates up to 150 guests under a stretch canopy lit with romantic festoon lighting. Alternatively, the rustic-inspired barn with original stone walls offers an indoor option with its hand-crafted wooden fixtures and fittings adding to the ambience for up to 150 guests and receptions also take place here.

Harriet and Matthew’s wedding reception at Bovey Castle enjoyed a light blue and white theme Images courtesy of Hannah Wilde Photography BLUE
32
Harriet and Matthew Kaaber-Gore married on 14th May 2022 at St Pancras Church, Widecombe in the Moor, followed by a reception at Bovey Castle in Devon.

Harriet and Matthew were childhood sweethearts, having met at school 10 years ago. “Harriet is my best friend’s sister, so she was always around whenever we met up,” Matthew tells us. “We became friends and grew close. She is stunning, and her personality is incredible - she is such a caring person.”

Harriet adds, “Matthew was the cool sporty guy in school that everyone fancied, including me. He’s my rock, the person I can turn to for anything. He is such a kind, caring man who will always put his family and friends first.”

The couple became engaged at Bovey Castle on their sixth anniversary (12th December 2020.) “I have been visiting Bovey Castle with my parents since I was a child and when Matthew and I started dating, we would always go there as a family so it’s a special place for me because I have so many wonderful memories,” Harriet tells us. “It was a wonderful surprise when Matthew asked me to marry him. He had told all of my family and they had planned the entire evening around the proposal. Matthew, who is never late for anything, was running late for dinner, so the rest of our family went on ahead of us. As we were walking to dinner, Matthew decided to go the long way around and, as we approached the hotel, he stopped on the terrace outside, got down on one knee and proposed. We then walked into the hotel where my family were waiting in the private room which they had requested for dinner which was the best surprise ever!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Our chosen church was the perfect size for the 150 guests that we had invited and it’s located on the moors so we thought that it would be lovely for everyone to see the ponies, sheep and the amazing views,” Harriet says. Also, Matthew’s grandparents, who have also been together since they were very young, went on a trip there when they were 18 years old and have a picture that was taken in front of the church, which made it feel like our choice was meant to be.”

“As I have been visiting Bovey Castle all my life and Matthew has been going regularly since we got together, we know every secret passageway in the venue, plus many of the staff members there, Harriet explains. “I knew that I would feel completely at ease having our reception at the venue. I have seen so many weddings take place there over the years and I have seen how well-planned they are.”

The couple had a mix of tall centrepieces with flowers and foliage displayed on large stands and low centrepieces of candles in hurricane vases decorated with a wreath of flowers. “Our flowers were loose hand-tied bouquets of roses, astilbe, spray roses, rosemary, wax flowers, light blue hydrangeas and freesias teamed with plenty of eucalyptus foliage,” Harriet tells us. “We also had eucalyptus decorating our table plan and Matthew and I made the stands for our table names while the team at Bovey Castle designed the place names with all dietary

requirements listed. Matthew’s brother owns the Burford Candle Company so we thought it would be a special idea to give each adult one as favours to take home while the children were given a personalised bag of sweets, colouring, toys, and games.”

The couple’s cake was a contemporary design with accents of muted colours and a botanical feel. “It featured four edible tiers and a couple of dummy ones all differing in height,” Harriet explains. “The bottom tier had a pale blue base and featured a white stencil – which was also replicated on the third split tier. It had handmade sugar flowers and touches of blue blooms decorating it. The flavours were chocolate mud cake; a carrot cake which was vegan; a champagne-flavoured tier and a red velvet cake.”

LOOKING THE PART

Harriet wore an ivory-fitted dress with a long train called Florence by the designer Martina Liana. “It had white flowers on the bottom and beading on the top while the front was a low-cut style,” she tells us. “I teamed it with a pear-shaped necklace, a pair of pearl earrings and a short veil decorated with flowers to match my dress.”

Matthew chose a light-grey suit the same as the groomsmen but he wore a sky-blue coloured tie and pocket square with a floral pattern while the groomsmen wore sky-blue ones without a pattern. “Our bridesmaids wore light blue, floor-length dresses. They were able to choose any style they wanted which enabled them to ensure they felt comfortable,” Harriet says.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple hired a magician to keep guests entertained during the day. “We had a photo room filled with a flower wall and props, plus a photo booth and polaroid cameras,” Harriet says. “We also had a games room with a pool table in it and a retro arcade table. These worked well for guests who didn’t want to dance.”

The couple became engaged at their home during an intimate proposal. “He surprised me,” explains Kelly. “We were sitting having a coffee in our front room and he suddenly asked me to marry him.”

Here, Kelly tells us about their special day at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth which was decorated with a stylish blue and white theme.

We had arrangements of blue and white flowers displayed around the venue that matched our bouquets to set the tone of our colour theme.

Chris wore a navy suit with a navy shirt and grey waistcoat and a pair of tan shoes – he looked so handsome! The function suite where we held our wedding breakfast looked so elegantly decorated for our wedding. Chris seeing me in my dress for the first time was a very memorable moment for me.

The season for lovers

Aisa and Andrew (Andy) Shearing married on 11th June 2022 at Humber Barn in Devon.

Aisa and Andy met online. “We shared a mutual love for the comedy show League of Gentlemen and our first conversation was about whether pineapple belongs on a pizza!” Aisa tells us.

Andy proposed to Aisa on 19th September 2020. “We were enjoying a long weekend in Newquay when he asked me and when we arrived home and told the children, they were so happy.”

The couple wanted a relaxed, romantic and chilled wedding somewhere that they could have the ceremony and reception all in one place. “We didn’t want any stress, just a beautiful day with a music festival vibe and Humber Barn offered us this.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple’s theme was apparent throughout their details. “Our centrepieces were wood slices topped with glass jars wrapped in hessian and filled with beautiful dried flowers including pampas grass, eucalyptus and gypsophila,” Aisa tells us. “We also had flower wands, corsages and buttonholes containing thistles to incorporate the blue in our theme. We said our vows under a beautiful flower garland which I made myself and we also had large light-up Mr & Mrs letters and bunting to decorate the venue with.”

Aisa also made the favours. “I run a small chutney and jam business and so I made jars of tomato, red onion, beetroot and mango chutney decorated with thank you tags tied with brown twine and personalised labels featuring our names and the date of our wedding,” she explains. “I also added small Belgian chocolates. Our serviettes were navy to tie in with the theme and we had a plan for the top tables seating our immediate family members and groomsmen with their families but the rest was very relaxed because we wanted people to mingle and sit with who they wanted to and enjoy themselves.”

The couple’s cake was made by their friend, Jenna. It was amazing,” Aisa tells us. “The large bottom tier of chocolate cake was filled with thick chocolate ganache, the middle tier was a rich carrot cake and the final tier was Victoria sponge covered in buttercream, edible flower petals and topped with a handmade clay topper of Andy and I.”

SAY CHEESE!

Should we consider booking a wedding proposal shoot?

Meet the expert: Paul Keppel is a Cornwall-based wedding photographer whose photographic work is a blend of reportage and documentary style.

Paul says: The moment you get engaged is so special. It’s such a happy, exciting time filled with adrenaline, joy and shock that often, the proposal is over too soon. If you have a wedding proposal shoot, you can capture all of the emotions and the event itself on camera. In years and months to come, instead of your engagement being a blur, you can look back on your wedding proposal photography and remember how special that moment was.

Family, friends and future generations not yet here will be able to share the indescribable magic of the proposal with you. Plenty of planning and thought goes into modern proposals so it’s lovely when loved ones can see exactly what your partner did for you. In years to come, it will mean so much to be able to look back at that moment in time and remember those feelings of endless love you had for each other.

Your engagement is a sweet spot between dating and marriage. It’s a short period of time which involves nobody but you two. It’s nice to be able to enjoy that time together and record it all on film before the wedding planning starts! In fact, it’s great preparation for your wedding photography. You can get to know your photographer and begin to feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Top tips for couples on how to look good in front of the camera:

ICING ON THE CAKE

We want a statement wedding cake with the wow factor, can you help?

Meet the expert: Anna Briggs is the talent behind the The Cheeky Cake Company based in Plymouth. Anna specialises in wedding and celebration cakes and sugar flowers.

Anna says: Here are some of my favourites wedding cakes that I have created for couples throughout 2022. Nothing spells the word love more than flowers, and sugar flowers definitely add the wow factor, providing a wonderful keepsake of your big day.

Delicate ruffles are so romantic so I created a cake finished with a floating tier decorated with sugar roses and foliage.

Don’t be scared to add colour to your wedding cake, the cake can express a couple’s personality.

A wedding cake does not have to be multiple tiers to give the wow factor. Smaller, delicate cakes can still create a beautiful, romantic centrepiece.

 I always suggest that the proposer should stand on the side that the sun is on, this means that if the sun is on the right, the proposer is on the right giving their partner the best of the light. Remove the ring box before you get down on one knee which will make it easier to access it from a trouser pocket! When getting down on the knee, use the closest knee to the camera so that your body is open to the camera. Enjoy the moment and don’t rush getting up, this means that the photographer can capture plenty of reaction shots.

 Looking good in front of the camera is much easier than you think! The most important thing is to be natural. You want photographs that reflect how you felt on the day. You’re already feeling excited so go with that - relax and enjoy it!

 The other thing you want to do is to feel comfortable. Our bodies reflect how we feel so if you don’t feel comfortable it will show. You’re with the person you like best in the world so have fun! Lots of physical contact, smiles and laughter will help to put you at ease and relish a professional photo shoot. I’ll be there to guide you through it, ensuring you look your best. That’s my job!

 Choosing the right location is key, Somewhere quiet is always the best option so that you don’t feel the pressure of people watching you. Within Cornwall, you have plenty of stunning locations to choose from to host your proposal.

WEDDING WHEELS

We want to arrive in style at our retro-themed wedding. What wedding wheels can you suggest?

Meet the expert: Sara and Symeon Phillips are the directors of Honeybugs Cornwall, a multi-award-winning VW wedding car and campervan hire throughout the region, travelling as far up as Devon.

Sara and Symeon say: Meet Hank, Hatty and Honey, our much-loved fleet of VW vehicles that have been awarded 2019, 2021 and 2022 Best Wedding Transport in Cornwall. We pride ourselves on offering a friendly, relaxed and professional service. Our wedding transport packages can be tailored to suit all requirements and we’re always happy to listen to any individual requests.

We have three high-standard, neutral-coloured wedding vehicles to suit any theme or style of wedding because we can add ribbon and a flower garland of your colour of choice. Hank is our handsome 1971 VW Bay Window, Honey is our gorgeous 1960 VW Splitscreen and Hatty is our cute 1963 VW Beetle. The vehicles can be mixed and matched - looking good individually or together, especially in photographs.

Our couples and wedding parties are always blown away when they see their wedding transport in person. We’re always complimented on the comfort of each vehicle and we pride ourselves on the hi-spec finish and cleanliness of each one which are beautifully decorated inside and out. We will always go that extra mile to make each wedding run smoothly from the couple’s first journey with us - our good communication from the offset is paramount to us.

All-inclusive hire includes up to four hours from the collection venue and the vehicles are dog-friendly. We provide ice and an ice bucket, champagne flutes, flip flops, towels, umbrellas plus music of the couple’s choice (if the signal allows.)

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

64

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day.

You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

Sustainable STYLES

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA

Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it. One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com

GRACE LOVES LACE

Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”

Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”

The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.” https://graceloveslace.co.uk

VERA WANG BRIDE

Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.

Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.

Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”

In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32).

PRONOVIAS GROUP

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.

Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com

ANDREA HAWKES

British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”

Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come. www.andreahawkes.co.uk

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

THE hair NECESSITIES

Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord

Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.

Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.

What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look? Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.

Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist

should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.

What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!

What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.

Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.

Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

Q&A Beauty

Our experts answer your questions

A-LIST LOCKS

My daughter is getting married this spring so any hair advice for mothers-of-the-bride would be appreciated!

Meet the expert: Martine Rodda is the director of DeModa, an organic and sustainable hair and beauty salon based in Redruth, Cornwall.

Martine says: The mother-of-the-bride role is very important in the context of the wedding. She could be excited, emotional, anxious, nervous, or just take everything in her stride. Either way, it’s essential that she looks and feels her best on the big day.

To help prepare for their daughter’s big day, and decide upon their hairstyle, mothers-of-the-bride should consider the following points:  What colour is my outfit? 

Should I choose a professional hair stylist or do it myself? 

Do I need to look different to my usual self? 

Should I wear my hair up or down? 

Should I follow the trends for this season? 

Am I wearing a hat or other hair accessories?

Having your hair done by a professional on the big day means there’s no extra stress for yourself and you’ll feel pampered. There’s more time for soaking up the atmosphere while enjoying a glass of fizz and relaxing. It’s important that you have good communication with your stylist, and that you inform them of the outfit you’ll be wearing, and any hats or hair accessories you may put on. They want to choose the best look to complement your outfit. Your hair stylist will be looking to tie in the overall silhouette, ensuring that your hair is balanced with the outfit you’re wearing and that any hat or hairpiece that may be worn is placed effectively and the hairstyle suits the accessory.

At DeModa, we will consider your head, face and body shape to enhance your best features. This may be a simple blow dry to create volume or add some bouncy waves. You must choose what will suit you instead of what’s in fashion. For example, a messy bun is popular but will not suit everyone. Think about the length and thickness of your hair. You may want to consider some extensions to enhance your locks. Speak with an expert and ensure that you get used to them before the big day. Book your hair colour (if needed) with enough time to avoid roots on the day and have a couple of trials until you’re happy with the look.

EUPHORIC EYES

Meet the expert: Clodagh McOnie is a Newquay-based professional eyelash, eyebrow technician and make-up artist.

Clodagh says: At Lash n Glow I offer bespoke bridal packages to get brides wedding ready including lash and brow treatments, spray tans, make-up application and skincare.

If you’re a newbie to the lash and brow world, it can get a little overwhelming picking the right treatments for you, especially for your wedding day. My top tip is that preparation is key! Your eyelashes and brows are important because they frame the face and the power of beauty treatments can transform the face and lift the eyes. They can be a significant change for someone new to them, therefore a consultation is always recommended at least a few months before the wedding.

There are a few great options for big-day lashes. Strip lashes can be purchased and applied by the make-up artist at the trial resulting in a quicker application on your wedding day. If you love the strip lash look, I highly recommend half lashes which lift and elongate the outside corner of the eye. Another great option is a lash lift and tint which is a flattering semi-permanent perming and tinting treatment that enhances and defines the natural lashes by curling them, really opening the eyes. Results are long-lasting around six to eight weeks and you can get them done a few days before your wedding.

Eyelash extensions are by far the most popular bridal treatment! I offer three different types of lashes – classics; hybrids and Russian volume. Classics are one extension on one natural lash so the results are very natural. Russian volume sets are made with handmade fans to create a fuller, fluffy look. My preferred bridal lashes are hybrid eyelash extensions which are a mix of classics and Russian volume fans so they’re the perfect texture and can be a natural wispy lash or they can be built up to be fuller and thicker - the best of both worlds! They’ll last for your honeymoon, too!

I recommend booking your eyelash full sets, brow treatments and make-up trial two to three months before the wedding (why not incorporate this into your hen party?) Adjustments can be made to the fullness or length of the lashes if needed, and the look can be re-created like the trial a couple of days before the wedding. The aftercare for eyelash extensions includes brushing them daily, not getting them wet for 24 hours and avoiding any oils or facial sprays. I provide cleaning kits to keep them clean to last as long as possible.

I offer a few brow treatments but my most popular for brides are brow lamination and brow definition. Brow lamination is the new fluffy brow craze and in my opinion, is an absolute must-have beauty treatment! It’s a perming treatment where chemical solutions are applied to the brows to relax the hair so that you can manipulate them easier and sculpt them to set them in the ideal shape and direction. It can even cover gaps and corrective work can re-shape the eyebrows. The treatment includes a tint, wax, trim, pluck and nourishing oil to set them into place. It’s advised four to five days before your wedding to allow them to settle and it lasts four to six weeks. There’s minimal aftercare, they can’t get wet for 24 hours and applying castor oil daily to nourish them and set them into place before you go to sleep will guarantee long-lasting results.

I also offer brow definition which includes a tint, wax, trim and pluck. This treatment is popular for clients whose brows don’t need a lot done to them and is also recommended four to five days before the wedding.

INDIA

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.
