Searching for the one

I’veworked at County Wedding Magazines for almost seven years now, and I’ve always admired the gorgeous venues, weddings and talented suppliers in East Anglia, so I’m really excited to introduce myself as the new editor.

Time is flying by, and if you’re courting down the days until your wedding, don’t worry, it will be here before you know it! This is one of my favourite issues as I love seeing the new wedding dress collections be revealed. I got married last year and so I know how stressful finding your dream dress can be. I’m short, curvy and very self-conscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns. I had no idea of what style I wanted, a fishtail made me feel like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it and a ballgown swamped me, but luckily my bridal consultant suggested an A-line silhouette, which suited my figure. If you’re looking for your dress and feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available, make sure you listen to your consultant. They have years of experience and have helped brides of every shape and size find their dream gown, so they will know what looks good on you even if you don’t yourself.

Lastly, don’t panic if you don’t have that overwhelming this is the one feeling, as I didn’t myself, just trust your gut and go for something that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident. For more inspiration, head over to our fashion pages, which are full of stunning on-trend styles, including ruffled tulle, satin layers, lace and subtle pleats.

If you’ve recently tied the knot or organised a styled shoot, you can submit it at melissa.cullen@county.wedding or via www.youreastanglian.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Norfolk’s Bayfield Catering has won ‘Caterer of the Year East’ and ‘Caterer of the Year Overall Winner (UK)’ at the English Wedding Awards 2023.

“Winning feels really strange, as it has taken a long time to get recognised,” says Emma Boubaker from Bayfield Catering. “There were so many people there, but when they called my name, it was amazing. We’re a small company, so it’s so nice to be recognised and appreciated as we work so hard.”

Emma is the only chef at the company and is supported by girls from her village who have been working together for the last decade.

Check out www.bayfieldcatering.co.uk for more information.

AWARD FINALIST

Cheryl’s Flowers in Sudbury is a finalist for the ‘Best Customer Service’ award by Guides for Brides.

“Being a florist is not just a service that I offer couples planning their wedding, it goes much deeper than that,” says owner Cheryl. “From the initial contact through to the big day, I help couples choose bouquets that complement their dresses and table designs. Together, we can choose seasonal flowers, as well as colours, tints, tones and shades that bring out the true beauty of flowers giving the wow factor they deserve to help create a memorable day!”

AWARD-WINNING RELAXATION

Suffolk-based wedding venue Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa has won ‘Best Boutique Spa’ at the Boutique Hotelier Awards and was shortlisted at the Professional Beauty Awards in the ‘Boutique Spa of The Year’ category.

The judges of the award were particularly impressed that The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel had invested a significant amount of time and money into training its staff to offer a more diverse and inclusive treatment menu, such as the Wellness For Cancer Treatment Menu, while always maintaining the highest standard of service.

Celebrating the award, Spa Manager Kate Lake, says: “We are thrilled to have won ‘Best Boutique Spa’, we truly believe in providing

our guests the gold standard in spa experience, and our incredible team makes this possible. From the spa attendants to the receptionists and the therapists, right through to the marketing and management, the dedication and passion from the whole team makes The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel experience unforgettable. To be recognised for our work to become as inclusive as possible, including our Wellness for Cancer training and dedicated treatment menu, makes it even more special.”

The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel was also chosen as one of only four luxury UK Spas to launch the new ESPA Modern Alchemy Rituals. Launched in collaboration with luxury product house ESPA, the exclusive body treatments will leave guests feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Discover more at www.bedfordlodgehotel.co.uk

NEW CELEBRANT ALERT

Susan McGregor is a new celebrant based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

TIE THE KNOT OUTSIDE

This year Hungarian Hall in Woodbridge, Suffolk, are launching several new outside areas where couples can tie the knot. These include under the large, ancient oak tree on the meadow, in front of the pond with water fountains in the background, or the Victorian Summerhouse.

Hungarian Hall offer indoor wedding ceremonies for up to 170 people or outside for large, Asian weddings of 300 or more guests. All weddings held at Hungarian Hall will have exclusive use based on two-and-a-half-day hire.

To find out more, visit www.hungarianhallevents.co.uk

“One of my skills is in creative writing and being able to weave the beautiful story of couples together for their ceremony,” says Susan. “Everyone wants to feel special on their big day, and a relationship built between a couple and their celebrant will ensure that they feel that their story is at the forefront of everything that happens that day. A celebrant-led ceremony will be completely bespoke and unique. I’m also a seasoned presenter, I have further qualifications in speech and drama, and was a high school teacher of English for 10 years so I’m in a position to be able to offer couples a quality service for their special day. In addition, alongside my role as a celebrant I can also provide sessions for couples and families in presentation skills and/ or speech writing. I know, from years of experience, how many family members dread having to make a speech on the day and how that fear can be crippling for them, but with just a few one-to-one sessions, I can take that fear away, helping them prepare and present with confidence. I’m looking forward to meeting new couples, hearing their stories and working with them to create their wonderful ceremonies.”

HALF PRICE WEDDINGS!

Chaucer Barn, set in the rolling hills of North Norfolk, is offering 2023 mid-week weddings at half price! Chaucer Barn is a traditional flint barn, built in 1836. The East wing is a contemporary conversion of the old flint milking parlour, featuring a two-story wall of glass which runs along the complete length of the west side in order to show off the stunning view over the main lawn, with it’s topiary pyramid forest and parkland with woodland behind.

The tone of the award-winning Chaucer Barn is one of stylish informality, ranging from the cathedral-like space of the main hall to the contemporary chic of the pink sitting room. Filled with textiles and artefacts brought by the owner from far eastern travels. The layout is open plan, with many hidden corners for guests to relax. The conversion is a masterful juxtaposition of ancient and modern.

When tying the knot here, Chaucer Barn’s prices include accommodation, sleeping up to 18 in the main building, plus the option to sleep another 10 to 20 in its five eco-lodges, nestled in the trees with a view over the magical stone circle valley. Head over to www.chaucerbarn.com for more information.

DRINK IT ALL IN

Cambridge Wine Merchants is celebrating its 30th birthday! The company’s motto is ‘we’re only as good as the last bottle we sold’, and it’s safe to say, they buy and sell wines with love, dedication and flair. It all started with one shop in Mill Road, Cambridge, and the team have never looked back. Still owned by Hal and Brett, they are now one of the biggest independent wine merchants in the country and continuing to expand.

The only true way to find the perfect wine for your big day is to taste it, and that’s where Cambridge Wine Merchants come in. After a consultation to narrow things down, you can have a drink at their King’s Parade Store in Cambridge to find your favourite. With more than 1,000 wines, 200 gins and 400 whiskeys, there is plenty to chose from and something for everyone, and as long as you spend over £250, you’ll be able to get discounted prices.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Parravanis, an ice cream business established in 1898, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Despite battling through several life-changing recessions, the brand has stood the test of time, and Parravani’s ice cream has been made in the same way, using the same recipes and traditional methods since 1898.

Today, the business has a wide customer base stretching over Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. The team make a range of more than 30 premium ice creams, delicious sorbets and seasonal flavours for weddings and events, and offer commissioned recipe combinations and patisseries from hand-picked partners.

General manager, Adrian Nichols, said: “We feel our success in reaching this incredible milestone is down to using local ingredients and traditional methods handed down through five generations, from 1898 when Giuseppe Parravani started it. Although we use modern equipment, which speeds up the ice cream-making process, the ingredients, methods, and recipes very much remain the same.”

To celebrate this special milestone, Parravanis has released a limited edition strawberries and cream flavour, only available until the 30th September 2023, with home delivery available anywhere in the UK.

Visit Parravani’s website for more information, www.parravanis.co.uk

NORTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE

GRADUATE CAMBRIDGE, CB2 1RT 01223 259 988 | www.graduatehotels.com/cambridge

Graduate Cambridge rests in the heart of the city, but is tucked away just off Mill Lane on the banks of the River Cam, a stone’s throw from Scudamore’s punting. Modern and bold, the front exterior of the hotel stands out amongst the Gothic buildings the city is known for, while still maintaining Cambridge’s quirky charm. Guests can step through the front doors to be met with a space paying homage to its roots, relishing in the hotel’s quiet luxury and eclectic style.

Following a complete interior renovation that includes all rooms, common spaces, fitness club and the pool, Graduate Cambridge’s interiors are made up of colour, patterns and textures that reflect the green surroundings of the pastoral English countryside. Guest rooms see splashes of ‘Cambridge Blue’, and key design details include wallpaper depicting school gates, striking wood and leather desks. The event spaces, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river, are light and bright, with bold design choices.

Graduate Cambridge’s crowning glory is its Garden Terrace overlooking the River Cam. Guests can relax on comfy, classic chairs while enjoying the punts go by with a beer or cocktail from the Garden Bar. Blue and white striped parasols dot the garden, and across the river

guests can look out at the green fields of Cambridgeshire where cows come to graze.

Celebrate in style

The riverside gardens are an intimate gathering space situated next to the River Cam, so couples can have an exquisite celebration while watching the punts glide by and the British countryside flourish.

Alternatively, the River Suite provides an inspiring backdrop for the special day with views of the River Cam. Its striking floor-to-ceiling windows and access to the riverside garden make for a romantic wedding ceremony, reception, or banquet.

Couples can say ‘I do’ in the Riverside Garden Gazebo while the punts glide by for a quintessentially Cambridge ceremony.

The Cayley Suite is a romantic space overlooking the River Cam that opens directly onto the riverside garden and can be accessed through the Garden House bar.

Sophie and Ed celebrated their rustic wedding surrounded by friends and family Images courtesy of Creative Pixel Photos

loving

Sophie and Ed started dating in 2010, but the timing wasn’t right, so the relationship ended. Fast forward to 2016, when Ed messaged Sophie on Facebook asking if she’d like to go out for a drink. “We met up and instantly felt a connection and have been inseparable ever since,” says Sophie. “A few years later, we went away to the Peak District for a few days. We hiked to the top of one

of the mountains and when we’d finished and reached the bottom, Ed got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. He told me he had planned to do it at the top, but there were too many people around!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

37 REAL WEDDINGS

Ed’s family were connected to St Peter’s Church in Coton, so it was important for us to get married there. For our reception, I had always envisioned a barn, so we visited two local venues and were drawn to Childerley.

To

We went with simple numbers for the tables, and each guest had a place card made from a kraft tag that was handwritten by two of my bridesmaids. One of my maids also made the table numbers, menu cards and table plan. We also created a photo board using a wooden pallet.

One Part Love Bakery provided our three-tiered cake, which had pressed, edible flowers cascading down the sides. We also had cupcakes for guests with dietary requirements.

For the food, we wanted to incorporate America into our menu, so went with breaded brie for the starter, barbecue hickory chicken, mac and cheese, garlic green bean and salad for the main, then pumpkin pie, blueberry cheesecake and chocolate brownie for dessert. We also had a hog roast in the evening. Our caterers, Boxed Events, really listened to our vision and made it come to life.

We hired a white Cadillac from Cambridge American Car Hire, which took my dad and I to the church and Ed and I to the reception venue. go with our country theme, we placed wooden slices with cowboy-boot confetti and white pumpkins on the tables.
38

I had a certain dress style in my head that I wanted, and my bridal consultant helped make that vision come to life. She added a cover-up to the top and a belt that could be tied into a pretty bow at the back. I had always wanted a long train and I had so many comments about how beautiful the dress was.

The men wore navy suits and grey waistcoats from Golding of Newmarket.

We hired singer Emma Stevens to perform while the guests arrived. I had secretly booked Silver Service Singers for the wedding breakfast. The singing waiter was a massive hit and really got the party started. We had a DJ in the evening and a photo booth from The Snap Booth.

Ed and I were both nervous but equally excited. We were relieved when the important parts were done so we could relax and enjoy ourselves. When the vicar started her speech of ‘do you take Sophie’, Ed said straight away: ‘yes!’ Everyone laughed and the vicar explained that she hadn’t finished what she was saying!

Ed’s dad had recently gone into a care home, but was able to make it to the church with support from a care worker. So many people were happy to see him there, and it meant a lot to have him witness us make our vows.

I found Jacqueline Louise Bridal Ltd on Etsy, who sells multi-way dresses. We went with the dusky rose option, and each bridesmaid was able to wear it in a way that they were comfortable with.

A splash OF COLOUR

Florence and Harry opted for a summer celebration in a tipi Images courtesy of Farlie Photography
42

Florence and Harry met almost nine years ago during a night out in Ipswich. “Harry was due to go travelling in Australia three months later, and I had just moved home from university,” says Florence. “We were seeing each other up until he left, and we both thought things might fizzle out when he moved, but we ended up talking every single day. After a few months, he asked me to visit him; I flew out for a four-week trip in February 2014, and we both returned two years later.”

Harry proposed on their sixth anniversary. “It was coincidentally also the day that we picked up the keys to our first home,” shares the bride. “We walked into the house, and he asked me to go upstairs to take some measurements. When I came back down, he was on one knee with a basket full of champagne and flowers and the song Purple Rain by Prince playing in the background (something we both danced to on the night we met). As it was halfway through the pandemic, we weren’t able to celebrate properly with family and friends, but we spend the afternoon crying and FaceTiming our loved ones.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“My family home has always held a special place in my heart, and I have so many memories there,” explains Florence. “It was actually Harry’s idea to have the wedding there. A lot of his family live in Australia, so it was important to us that we could have the flexibility of an outdoor event, considering at the time we weren’t sure what the pandemic restrictions would be like; especially since his family were flying all the way over from Australia. At the time, the paddock around the back of my parents’ house had sat unused and unloved for almost 20 years. The ground was uneven, and there were stinging nettles up to our shoulders covering about 70 per cent of the space. We knew we had a huge project on our hands, so after we got engaged, we set about getting the space ready. Harry’s uncles both work in landscaping, and my parents are both retired and love gardening, so we were very lucky to have lots of family members support us in making our vision come to life. First, the nettles had to be pulled out by the roots, we got diggers in to help with that, and then it was a long and tedious process of seeding and flattening the ground, followed by more seeding and constant watering. It became a passion project for my parents, who were tending to the grass every day in the lead-up to the wedding. We had an outdoor ceremony on the grass at the front of the house, which Willoughby Green built a bespoke pergola for to set the scene. For the reception, everyone came through to the paddock, which had been transformed even further by the incredible team at Events Under Canvas with three tipi tents, festoon lighting, a bar, furniture and a firepit.”

For their favours, the couple decided to create place names which reflected the theme of the wedding but also made fun keepsakes. “As it was late August, we knew the weather was likely to be hot, so I created personalised boho-style fans, with our #CrushedIt wedding hashtag on the back,” recalls the bride. “Luckily, I had the company that I run with my best friends, Boho & Bubbles, to lean on when it came to a lot of the styling, signage and prep work. The fans looked stunning, and lots of people commented on how they were really unique, which was a relief as it was a lot of work! We also enlisted the help of other family members, as the process took a lot longer than we expected. I’m sure they never want to see a vinyl sticker again!

“To stick with the disco/festival theme, we opted for our favourite love songs as table names,” adds Florence. “Boho & Bubbles created and painted a giant piece of MDF with a vinyl record at the top which said “find your set list”. We placed this under a tree that had lots of disco balls hanging from the branches above.”

For their centrepieces, Florence wanted to create something that was in keeping with their theme but also looked simple so it didn’t distract from the fans. “Hayley from Starry Eyed Weddings understood our vision and provided an array of burnt orange jars and vases for the bouquet cutoffs, and plenty of fairylights,” remembers Florence. “Hayley matched the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses, and the result was better than I could have imagined.”

The couple’s cake maker ended up cancelling just before the wedding, but luckily their talented friend stepped in to create a stunning cake.

“Willoughby Green built us a stunning pergola for the ceremony backdrop, which Boho & Bubbles styled using disco balls, fabric and florals, along with bouquet offcuts in hanging milk bottles,” says the bride. “Boho & Bubbles also created giant dream catcher-style décor to hang in the trees that lined the walkways through to the paddock. Of course, we hung even more disco balls in pretty much every other available tree, and Hayley lent us a giant disco ball, which was an ex-display from Selfridges to dress the bar area and continue the theme.

“Ripe Events Ltd provided our catering,” continues Florence. “Joe was brilliant from start to finish, and all of the food products he used were seasonal, flavoursome and local.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I had seen the dress I wanted to try on Pinterest,” explains Florence. “It was by a designer called Rue De Seine who is based in New Zealand. I checked online for local suppliers who stocked them and was directed to White Reflections in Norwich. It’s run by mother and daughter duo Holly and Carol, who were lovely and full of great energy. I tried the dress I found online first, plus nine others from the same designer. It was by no means a traditional dress, but I have never been one to stick to tradition, and I knew from the moment that I tried it on that it was the one for me. I felt like a member of Fleetwood Mac in my dress, which was the boho-festival energy I wanted to channel. For accessories, Harry’s mum gave me a pearl necklace that her dad had given to her on her wedding day for my something old. One of my oldest friends gave me some gorgeous matching pearl earrings for my something new. My mum lent me a beautiful bracelet for my something borrowed, and my bridesmaids bought me a blue garter for my something blue.”

Harry and his best men wore beige checked suits from House Of Cavani in Manchester.

“I wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable in whatever they wore, and also choose a dress that they might want to wear again in the future,” recalls Florence. “I knew I wanted to mix the colours up; so we had a bridesmaid’s dinner at mine where the girls tried on a variety of dresses in different colours and styles. By some fluke, my maid-of-honour managed to find a dress on SilkFred that came in three colours, burnt orange, sage green and champagne; it was like it was meant to be.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We were lucky to have Apryl, a family friend who has an entertainment company called Kiss Events on hand for the day,” remembers the bride. “Apryl provided us with her PA system for the speeches and also helped to coordinate a lot of the logistics on the day. A few months before the wedding, I told her I wanted to surprise Harry and our guests with some singing waiters and asked her if she would be able to help. Apryl went absolutely above and beyond and organised for six people to stage a mishap (spilling a tray of drinks), dressed up as waiters and waitresses and burst into song singing September by Earth Wind and Fire. She also took it one step further, and around two weeks before the wedding, she told me she’d enlisted the help of Clare Western, a classically-trained opera singer who used to be Ed Sheeran’s singing teacher. Between them, they staged a scene with Clare informing everyone on the microphone just before the food was served that our caterer had to deal with a family

REAL WEDDINGS 45

emergency, and instead broke into an amazing operatic rendition. It surprised our guests, and even me to some extent as I let Apryl run with her surprise, so I didn’t know exactly what was happening. It set the tone for the speeches, and everyone was on such a high, so many people commented that it was something they would never forget.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“We both felt excited, overwhelmed and full of appreciation for each other and the incredible people in our lives,” says Florence. “I had a beautiful moment pre-wedding where my mum, Harry’s mum and my bridesmaids gave me a wedding box, filled with something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue, which was so thoughtful and sentimental. Instead of flowergirls, we opted to have flowermen and had two of our best friends started the ceremony by throwing confetti out of bumbags to Come and Get Your Love. Uncle Jeff was our master of ceremony and also officiated our actual ceremony; he broke into an impromptu poetry rendition of The Power of Love during our ceremony.

“Everyone put so much thought and attention to detail into the speeches,” adds Florence. “During the best men’s speech, split between four of Harry’s closest friends, they insisted they found an old copy of his diary and read out excerpts from different stages of life, from the school years to teenage years and adult life. To this day, people still ask me if the pink fluffy diary they ‘found’ was real.”

and James met through her cousin. “That was back in 2013, so we’ve been together for 10 years now,” says Katrice. “He asked me to be his girlfriend on April Fool’s Day, so many people, including myself, thought he was joking but clearly not!”

Seven years into their relationship, James popped the question. “We had moved in together earlier that year, and after the first lockdown, he organised a trip to Athens, Greece, which is somewhere that I’ve always wanted to go,” shares the bride. “James wanted to visit a mountain with amazing views, so we trekked to the top, and once we got there, James got down on one knee with the whole of Athens behind us. I thought he might propose but didn’t want to get my hopes up just in case.”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

49 REAL WEDDINGS

About five years ago, someone I know posted on Instagram about renewing their vows at Holkham Hall, so I clicked on the link and was instantly blown away. The more I looked at it, the more I fell in love. Everything I saw was exactly what I wanted, and when I went to see it at a food festival they were hosting, I fell in love with it even more.

We incorporated eucalyptus into our table plan and place names.

Our

Our caterers, Mackenzie-David Events, were fantastic and catered for everyone. James and I chose a dish each and a vegetarian/vegan option.

The Little Sugar Rose created a simple cake with edible flowers and a touch of glitter to match my dress. centrepieces were flowers from Victoria Arrowsmith Floral Design in different-sized vases. For our favours, we gave our guests pink and white bonbons which we placed in mason jars.

I chose a dress by Jason Maddison that I purchased from Fross Wedding Collections. I loved it as it hugged me in all the right places and had a little bit of bling, lace and a lovely train. I also wore a custom cathedrallength veil which had the same lace as my dress on the bottom. James opted

I was nervous, but as soon as I saw James, I cried as I had never felt so happy. He also cried, but we had the best day and it went so quickly.

The staff at Holkham Hall made the day extra special, everything went so smoothly, and I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

The bridesmaids chose sage green dresses with different necklines to match their body type. We hired a string quartet who played during the drinks reception, a photo booth from Capture Lounge and a DJ in the evening.

STATEMENT CAKES

We want a cake that will wow our guests; do you have any suggestions?

If you’re after a cake that will impress your guests, this can be done in several ways; think about the flavours and finish of the cake and the colours used.

The cake pictured used autumnal tones, echoing the AW23 Pantone report, in tender peach, rose violet and Persian jewel. Teamed with spiced carrot and an orange-blossom buttercream, zesty lemon and triple raspberry, it’s finished with bright colours and quality fresh and dried flowers. This style works well with small and large budgets and will create the wow factor every time.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE

My hubby-to-be and I want a menu that will impress our guests at our upcoming nuptials; what do you suggest?

If you’re looking for something amazing for your menu, I suggest a sharing board made up of either meat or fish; not only does it create the wow factor when it’s brought to the table, but it gets all the guests to chat whilst sharing delicious food.

We’ve found lots of couples are moving toward sharing boards instead of the traditional three-course wedding breakfast.

A PIECE OF CAKE

What are the latest cake trends?

In 2023 we are seeing a lot of non-traditional designs such as: Floating cakes –these give the illusion of floating tiers using sidebar stands.

Spiral and waterfall style cakes – this is a clever technique where the flowers are arranged either in a spiral around the cake using wires so that it stands free, or in a waterfall design that cascades down the front or side of the cake using wires to make them stand unrestrained.

Pressed flower/ edible flower cakes – this method utilises fresh, edible or pressed flowers that are stuck to the side of the cake in a pleasing pattern or design.

Buttercream flower cakes painted using a palette knife – this design utilises oil painting skills to paint 3D buttercream flowers onto the sides and top of the cake.

Small cakes made bigger using stands – if you’re having a small wedding but still want your cake to stand out, then the clever use of stands and clear acrylic tiers will help increase the overall size without increasing the number of portions of cake.

BEHIND THE LENS

Our big day is fast approaching, and we’re thinking of booking a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips?

The first thing to understand with videography is that it’s very different to photography and requires a separate skill set, so keep this in mind when looking for suppliers.

Before booking, look at a videographer’s sample films; do you like their style? Is it the right length for you? Longer is not always better; a good length is between 15 and 20 minutes; it captures all the best bits and holds people’s attention. If you love the ones that you have seen, then this may be the supplier for you. As with photography let your eyes and your heart make the selection for you rather than comparing packages.

The details to look for in a potential videographer are experience in filming weddings; do they have sample films from real weddings you can watch? Ask how they work with your photographer, as these two people will be with you all day and should be working together to make your day stress free without taking you away from your guests or the party for long periods. If your videographer is providing a drone, which is a great addition to any wedding film, make sure they have been trained properly, are insured and have permission to fly at your venue.

Finally, if they are going to record your ceremony and/or speeches, will they be miking you up? Most professional videographers will have

STYLE ME PRETTY

We’re trying to keep our wedding as eco-friendly as possible; do you have any ideas on how we can extend this to our décor?

As the owner of Posh Plants, I’m always talking to couples who want the best wedding ever, yet are aware of their eco credentials. They want to tread lightly on this world, be impactful and create everlasting memories yet leave less waste and have minimal harm on the environment. We think that by hiring large trees, the impact is big, yet the carbon footprint is small.

Our trees are approx 30-40 years old and after going out to work at a wedding, they come back to live at the nursery, where they’re mollycoddled and looked after by the team at Posh Plants, so nothing is thrown away or wasted. We believe the tree’s eco credentials should be applauded as they absorb CO2 and give off oxygen.

Love is simple

Focusing on the overwhelming happiness that comes after the formalities on a wedding day, this styled shoot at The Willow Tree is full of romantic inspiration

Images courtesy of Caroline Acaster Photography

The theme for this styled shoot, love is simple, was all about capturing the overwhelming happiness that comes after the formalities on a wedding day.

“Focusing on the intimacy of this stunning venue in the winter, the magical festoon lighting against the night-time sky captivated those special moments shared by a couple on their wedding day,” says shoot coordinator Michelle Tinsley from Lily Francis Bridal. “Reds and pinks were included by the florist, stationery, make-up artist and stylist to add an element of vibrancy to match the crispness of the rest of the shoot and bring some warmth to a (literally) freezing day!

“The bride was dressed in an ivory, strapless wedding gown with a romantic sweetheart neckline,” adds Michelle. “This was paired with the groom wearing a fitted black tuxedo complete with a bow tie supplied by Chimney Formal Menswear. Kate from Kate Atalay Bespoke Hairstyling created two bridal looks for the shoot to carry the story from day to night. Firstly, an elegant romantic up do to fit the double diamanté headband, which then transformed to a soft wavy down style to marry into the floral

headpiece for a relaxed evening. To highlight the dreamy, romantic feel of the shoot and elegance of the dress, Becky from Legendary Makeup chose a subtle bronze on the eyes with individual lashes for added drama. A pop of glossy pink on the lips perfectly complemented the bright florals, with glowy skin bringing a bit of light and dimension to the outside shots.

“The flowers, creatively composed by the talented Chloe from Beautiful Blooms Florist, tied in perfectly with the wintry theme, with jewel tones and a pop of white,” continues Michelle. “Miss Carlysle and Co styled the shoot, focusing on using fairylights to add a sense of romance under the willow tree and winter inspiration for the tablescapes. Videographer Josh Hyde was able to capture the details in their truest form. The picturesque, unanticipated snow created a gorgeous backdrop to film the couple, the venue, and the work done by all the suppliers involved. Then, with the guidance from the talented Caroline Acaster, the natural and authentic imagery produced encompassed the inspiration behind this shoot and perfectly captured the story.”

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

The latest seasonal trends for the wedding party

GOALS Squad

Whenit comes to a wedding, whether you’re the bride or a guest, the million-dollar question for everyone is: what am I going to wear? For the bride and groom, as they are the stars of the show, it’s likely that they have at least an idea of what their big-day look will be like. But for the rest of the wedding party, where do you begin? First and foremost, the venue and theme of the day are paramount. A long flowing gown for bridesmaids will look out of place in a field for a tipi wedding; similarly, the motherof-the-bride in a tropical print, summer dress may stand out against a stately home wedding venue with a Bridgerton-inspired theme. Secondly, the weather, we British folk like to moan about it and rightly so, because how many sunny days do we have each year? The season and the inclement weather will dictate not only the attire, the colour palette – no one wears pastel yellow in winter! – but also your accessory choice; boleros, jackets and wraps will be your cosy friend for winter ‘I dos’. With this in mind, we’ve put together a feature focusing on seasonal trends, so you can look the part no matter the time of year...

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS

This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.

L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.

The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

IN NEED OF A BOOST?

Green mandarin essential oil is packed with antioxidants and is known for its rejuvenating and brightening properties. It leaves dull skin looking luminous and radiant, perfect for reviving your complexion and bringing a gorgeous glow to it. That’s why the clever folk at Decléor have harnessed its power to create its Green Mandarin Glowing Collection.

TRIED & TESTED

Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:

“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.

This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20

SHINE BRIGHT

I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk

LUSCIOUS LASHES

LEGIT Lashes is Huda

Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com

eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

eSalon is reinventing the way we colour our hair by creating a fully-customised professional-grade home hair colour that’s made to order and shipped directly to the door. Find out more at www.esalon.co.uk

SEARCHING FOR THE ONE

When should I start looking for a wedding dress, and how do I go about my search?

As a rule, we tend to advise brides-to-be to start looking for their wedding dress 12-18 months before the big day. I know this seems like a long timeframe to some people, but 12-18 months will allow plenty of time as:

 You can book appointments in multiple stores, as you may not find your dress in the first shop you visit.

 Delivery for some designers can take up to 20 weeks.

 Alterations with a seamstress can take longer than you think, it all depends on your dress design and if it’s peak wedding season, but allow up to 10 weeks.

 Off-the-peg dresses are an option if you don’t have much time, so don’t panic, as you can take these home on the same day.

The internet is a great source for looking at different dress styles and getting an idea of what you like. However, it’s always a good idea to go into your first appointment with an open mind; so many women are surprised at what does and doesn’t suit them.

Research the bridal shops local to you, and find out where your friends and family went.

Follow boutiques on social media, so you can get an idea of the designers they stock, their style and price range before you book.

Q&A Fashion and Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

BRIDAL BEAUTY

There are so many makeup artists to choose from; how do I find the person that’s right for me?

When it comes to choosing the right make-up artist, it’s best to start by thinking about how you envision yourself looking on your wedding day.

There are typically three categories of bridal make-up:

Natural – make-up that enhances your natural beauty.

Soft glam – a more enhanced look with lashes and heavier coverage.

Heavy glam – the kind of look you’d see the Kardashian’s wear. Once you’ve decided on your look, you’ll need to start looking on Instagram at the styles the make-up artists that you’re interested in are creating; this will help you narrow down your search.

Once you’ve found a couple of make-up artists that you’re interested in, look on Google and their websites at their reviews to read about other bride’s experiences. By doing this you’ll get an idea on whether the artist is a good fit for you.

Lastly, contact your chosen supplier, either drop them a direct message or an email and see how they respond to you. You need to connect with them and feel at ease around them, so this is the best way to find out if you will click.

Abi May

www.abiloubeauty.com

I’ve seen some gorgeous pictures of messy buns and textured up dos, but my hair is so thin and straight. Can I still get this look?

Messy buns and textured up dos can still work with fine, straight hair. A talented hairdresser will have lots of tricks for creating the illusion of thicker hair. It can be thoroughly prepped with product to give more hold and straighteners and wands will give your locks long, lasting movement.

Twists and plaits – pulled out rather than neat and tight – padding and bun rings, as well as clip in extensions, will make even the finest hair look fuller.

Dry shampoo creates texture, plumps up the hair and gives a good base for back combing.

BAN THE BLOAT

Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day

Oneof the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding.

There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.

CHEW PROPERLY

Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30

times to allow the gut to digest with ease.

EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS

Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.

START WITH SOMETHING BITTER

Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.

AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS

It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.

LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS

If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

WELLNESS 87

SELF-CARE Soothing

Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day

88

It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.

That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.

Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.

The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.

For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.

There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.

“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”

After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.

Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.

Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.

I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.

For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.

At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.

“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”

Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.

I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.

As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”

Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.

Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.

As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”

Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

92

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

CITY ESCAPES 95

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Located on the banks of the picture-perfect River Thames in Surrey, just 10 minutes from Windsor, The

on Thames is a modern fourstar hotel with an award-winning spa offering.

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
