Unique, joyous and fully personalised, it should encapsulate everything you are as a couple and bring everyone together in a wonderful celebration to remember.
A ceremony led by a celebrant like me is completely different to one led by a registrar:
• We’ll be in regular contact and I’ll create an amazing ceremony for you! No restrictions on time, place or content.
• No-one else will have a wedding like yours – it will be fully bespoke.
• You’ll be the only couple I see that day – there’ll be no registrar in a rush to get to their next wedding!
• You’ll know me well before the day itself and your ceremony will feel like it’s being led by a trusted friend, not a stranger.
Don’t settle for less! Make contact right away to book your date. I’m a fully trained, trusted, reliable professional and I’d love to help you realise your dreams!
“We felt so lucky to have Susan as our Celebrant. The most personable service, we had the most heartfelt ceremony and could not have felt more comfortable - we honestly could’t recommend her more!”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Award-winning bar and restaurant The Botanist in Ipswich has announced a new food and drink menu. Ideal for a pre-wedding date night, couples can expect fresh seasonal flavours, lighter and brighter dishes, botanyinspired cocktails, as well as updates to its signature hanging kebabs.
Vegetarian and vegan diners can choose from a growing menu of options, with almost half of the dishes being vegetarian and a third now suitable for vegans.
Executive chef at The Botanist, James Scott, said: “As a chef, it’s amazing to work with vibrant ingredients, and we’ve brought lighter and brighter elements to this new menu, whilst working hard to make our classic signature dishes even more impressive. To make 30 per cent of the menu vegan, we put the same level of creativity, care, and detail into plant-based dishes as we have with the rest of the menu. It’s important to us that this offering reflects the quality and flavour our guests have come to know and love when visiting our restaurants.”

Luxury homeware brand Nara Cambridge has launched its new Living Linens Collection. Included in the range are Aponi Napkins, which feature three finely appliqued butterflies in 3D form, available in pure white and delicate blue.
Appliqued on 100 per cent linen and featuring a hand-drawn hemstitch border, the Aponi Napkins will handle several generations of use, if cared for correctly, meaning they are not only beautiful, but a sustainable option too.
Alexandra Bishop, the founder of Nara Cambridge, says: “We wanted to try and capture the fragile beauty of these creatures in a way not seen on table linens before now. Our Living Linens try to encapsulate the delicacy as if the butterflies have just fluttered down, creating real drama and interest on even the simplest table setting.”
The collection is available online at www.nara-cambridge.com

REST AND RELAXATION
Newmarket’s multi-award-winning The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel has announced its 10th anniversary. For a decade, The Spa has been a sanctuary of tranquillity with experiences for both Suffolk locals and the wider county’s visitors. Nestled within the idyllic surroundings of the former Georgian hunting lodge of Bedford Lodge Hotel, The Spa has become a leading spa destination in the UK.
Guests can enjoy spa breaks, spa days and evenings; with something for even the most discerning of guests, including 10 beautiful treatment rooms, one couple’s suite, along with extensive spa facilities. These include the iconic hydrotherapy pool, relaxation room, steam room, sauna, dry flotation, experiential showers, and rooftop hot tub.
Spa manager, Kate Lake, explains how the spa world has changed in the last decade: “In the 10 years since The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel opened, the UK spa industry has undergone a remarkable transformation responding to changing demands and expectations of discerning spa lovers. As the world becomes more conscious of health, sustainability and self-care, spas have adapted to embrace organic and natural products, prioritising well-being, addressing menopause concerns, and catering more to male clients. So much more than simply a beautiful destination to enjoy the steam and a massage, spas are now seen as a haven for holistic wellness and self-care.”

BRIDAL BEAUTY
Yuki Black is a professional hair stylist based in Cambridge. “I often travel around East Anglia and the surrounding counties,” adds Yuki. “I graduated from Japan Hair and Beauty college in Osaka in 2006 and my extensive training in Japan opened the doors for me to travel to salons across the world. During my 18 years of experience, I have lived in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada and achieved my ambition of working in one of the UK’s biggest salons, Headmasters. There I was promoted to master hair designer and was invited to join the exclusive art team, where members work for events such as London Fashion Week. I now focus on bridal beauty and feel lucky to be part of a bride’s big day. It’s always so emotional for me to see my bride’s reaction after my work is done. I make sure my brides feel relaxed so you and your girls can just sit back and enjoy a glass of bubbles (or more!) together on such an exciting morning.”
Yuki offers her services for the whole wedding party and has a wedding package available which includes a trial for three different styles and hair for the big day.
Exclusively for Your East Anglian Wedding, Yuki is offering the first 10 readers who email hello@yukiblackhairstylist.com and mentions the magazine a 10 per cent discount. The offer is valid for couples getting married between September 2024 and May 2025.

TUDDENHAM MILL, IP28 6SQ
01638 713 552 | www.tuddenhammill.co.uk
There has been a mill at Tuddenham for around 1,000 years. The earliest written record of Tuddenham Mill is in the Domesday Book of 1086, but it’s suspected that flour was being milled here decades before. Over time the building has evolved from a working mill to the high-quality contemporary restaurant and boutique hotel we see today. There are glimpses of the venue’s history throughout the mill, from exposed beams in the spacious bedrooms to the cast iron water wheel, which has been imaginatively brought back to life through the use of atmospheric lighting and stylish glass walls.
Just a few miles from Cambridge, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds, Tuddenham Mill is easy to reach and has a range of luxurious suites for
your guests to choose from, each is filled with stylish furniture, high-end products and little touches.
Celebrate in style
The Terrace Room is ideal for small, intimate weddings, seating up to 32 guests, while the stylish restaurant is perfect for weddings with up to 60 people. For large celebrations, the property can accommodate up to 120 loved ones in a more informal setting.
We love...
Tuddenham Mill is perfect for blissful mini-moons. Stay in one of the luxurious bedrooms or out in the meadow in one of the romantic nooks, complete with natural wood-fired hot tubs.

BURY ST EDMUNDS GUILDHALL, IP33 1PR
01284 247 037 | www.burystedmundsguildhall.org.uk
The Guildhall is the oldest provincial civic building in England dating back to the 12th century. Located within the ‘Medieval Grid’ of Bury St. Edmunds, the Guildhall’s central location makes it ideal for weddings, with easy access for guests staying in nearby hotels. As the ‘food capital’ of Suffolk, Bury St. Edmunds also has many eateries and pubs within walking distance.
The grand porch and oak door provide a memorable entrance, and to the rear of the building is a paved courtyard leading to the garden, a peaceful haven in the centre of the busy market town.
Celebrate in style
The historic Guildhall has two main rooms. The oak-panelled Court Room is ideal for ceremonies and receptions. Full of historic portraits, the space has a raised dais and judges’ bench, a wooden floor and can
comfortably seat up to 80 loved ones.
Alternatively, the Banqueting Hall is an elegant Georgian room with a magnificent marble fireplace and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. It can accommodate up to 80 seated guests or 120 for a buffet or party-style reception.
The brick Tudor Kitchen has a more informal atmosphere and is popular for wedding teas, seating around 20 friends and family or a further 15 for a standing drinks reception.
The Robing Room was used for the mayor and other dignitaries of the town to change into their ceremonial robes but is now used for micro weddings for up to 12 nearest and dearest.

Charlotte and Ben met through mutual friends and years later tied the knot at All Manor of Events
Images courtesy of Paul Bailey Photography
Charlotte and Ben met at a mutual friend’s house party. “We played a game of table tennis together and chatted the night away as if we’d known each other for years,” says Charlotte. “We became best friends and eventually started going on dates. Ben ran a local poker night, so he taught me how to play, and before we knew it, we spent every day together. Time goes by so fast when we’re together, it feels like it’s only been five minutes since the night we met, but it’s been seven years!”
Ben asked Charlotte for her hand in marriage on her 21st birthday. “That weekend, we went to Brighton as a birthday surprise,” adds the bride. “On the day Ben popped the question, we went to a bar by the beach, had some lovely cocktails and a late-night walk along the sand. Ben was so nervous, but I had absolutely no idea! He proposed on the beach that night, and I was so surprised I couldn’t believe it and kept asking if he was sure, but of course, I said yes!”
Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

WEDDINGS
When my nanny was alive, she used to be an amazing baker and made beautiful sugar flowers. We hunted high and low for the perfect cake maker to cover our bake head to toe in sugar flowers just like she would have. We found the wonderful Cake 2 Crumbs, who couldn’t have done a more amazing job; I know my nanny would have loved it.
We wanted to mix our table plan up a bit, so we kept family and friends together but moved seats around so everyone could socialise.
Ben and I made all of our favours the day before the wedding. We gave everyone Haribo jelly frogs as we’re slightly frog mad; I even have a frog tattoo that I got not long after our engagement.
We love a good cocktail, so we chose martini centrepieces filled with beautiful flowers.
36
The bridesmaids opted for pink gowns from WED2B. The girls picked their dresses so they’d feel comfortable on the day. We ordered them in the same colour, and they all matched perfectly.
We wanted to party the night away, so we invested in giant glow sticks, and they were a hit with everyone.
To keep our guests entertained, we hired a roulette and black jack table from 4 Aces Fun Casino. It was run with fun money, so we didn’t have to worry about real money, and guests could spend as much as they wanted. It got very competitive, and it was brilliant to see everyone having fun.
The day flew by so quickly, but every moment was amazing. One of my favourite parts was the car journey with my dad and walking down the aisle with him. I’m very close with my family, so it meant a lot for my dad to give me away. It had been a long time coming, and since the pandemic, none of our family had seen each other, so it was amazing to see everyone’s faces after such a long time.
Ben and the groomsmen chose navy blue suits with pink ties, and Ben had a pink floral tie to help him stand out.

My wedding gown was a champagne lace and tulle princess style from WED2B; it was the dress of my dreams.

Samantha and Justin celebrated their big day with a festival theme at Oak Lodge Glamping
Images courtesy of Alice Jones Photography

Samantha and Justin met whilst working at a brewery. “We instantly hit it off as friends,” says Samantha. “I found Justin extremely attractive, and he makes me laugh until my sides hurt. Justin says that my looks are what attracted him first, but he soon realised how alike we were and how easy our friendship was. Justin and I had both been married/in long-term relationships with children before meeting. We were at an age where we knew exactly what we wanted from life. Our children were late teens or early twenties, and all got on as though they had been brought up together their entire lives.”
Justin proposed on New Year’s Eve during a magical firework display. “He was adamant that we went to London for New Year’s Eve to watch the fireworks, and I didn’t want to as I was working late that night,” shares the bride. “He insisted, so off we went. We went for dinner, then onto the riverfront to watch the fireworks and countdown to midnight. At midnight he said: ‘I love you Sam’, I jokingly said: ‘How much though?’, he then got down on one knee, pulled a box out of his pocket and while opening the box, he said: ‘This much!’ It was a complete shock, but of course, I had no hesitation in saying yes. Justin knew that I had always wanted to see the London fireworks in person, and he wanted to be the one to make it happen.”
SETTING THE SCENE
Oak Lodge Glamping is owned by the couple’s family friend. “It’s the most relaxing, beautiful informal venue and was exactly what I envisioned for our wedding,” explains Samantha. “We wanted a festival vibe to reflect our love of the outdoors and sociable personalities. We also wanted all of our guests to be able to stay over and continue the party well into the night, and it was the perfect place to do that. We provided complimentary glamping to all our guests, and Oak Lodge Glamping provided us with a beautiful caravan called The Showman which we used as the bridal suite.”
Instead of favours, the happy couple provided a candy bar, an alcohol-free bar, and a custom-built prosecco and cocktail wall, which went down a treat with their guests.
“We decided not to have a table plan,” recalls Samantha. “We had straw bales around the ceremony and reception areas, blankets and picnic tables. It was really important for us that everyone mingled and got to know each other rather than sitting at their designated tables. For our centrepieces, we chose a mixture of gin and rum bottles (our two favourite drinks) with eucalyptus and lights in. The flower displays we used for the ceremony were brought over by the bridal party to dress the tables.
“All of the bridesmaids wore leaf and wax flower crowns with matching wrist corsages,” adds the bride. “I had a larger eucalyptus and waxflower full crown, with a hand-tied, unstructured bouquet.”
To continue their boho theme, Samantha and Justin placed quotes in frames around the venue. “We also had a beautiful vintage bike at the start of the aisle with a basket full of confetti for the guests to throw for the ultimate confetti shot,” continues Samantha. “We had a firepit for toasting marshmallows, handmade festival signs, a photo booth, a chill-out lounge with luxurious leather sofas and a cigar and whiskey bar. There were also apple crates, with additional gypsophila, eucalyptus and lanterns dotted around everywhere.”
As Samantha isn’t a fan of cake, it was up to Justin to choose their big-day bake. “He went with his and hers Colin the Caterpillars, as they are his absolute favourite,” says the bride. “The cakes were personalised with our names and were surrounded by 100 mini rolls for our guests to pick at.

in for the day, serving a hog roast with all the trimmings,” adds Samantha. “There were gluten-free bread rolls available and a vegan curry which could be served with the jacket potatoes and the vegan salads. In the evening, we had a barbecue with burgers, sausages and vegan sausages.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
“I wore a Chantilly lace dress from Bride & Bloom, which had a sweetheart neckline, balloon sleeves and a bolero jacket that was easily removable, transforming the dress from day to evening,” explains Samantha. “The jacket fastened with pearls and feathers, so I wore my grandmother’s pearl necklace and my mother’s pearl ring to complement it. Whilst I had seen a few dresses online, Jane at Bride & Bloom absolutely knocked it out of the park when she found this one for me. She listened to everything I wanted from the day and when she pulled that dress, I knew immediately that it was the one. Jane and Bernice were absolute godsends on the morning of the wedding; both were on hand for last-minute details, with Jane coming over in the morning to help me into my dress and ensure all bridesmaids’ flowers etc were perfect.”
Justin and the groomsmen wore matching grey tweed suits with sage green ties and handkerchiefs.
“I had seven bridesmaids,” shares the bride. “They varied in age, with each one having hang-ups on their looks/body types. I wanted them to feel beautiful, so we decided on matching skirts and each bridesmaid chose a top in ivory which they felt suited them whilst still complementing the theme. The skirts were handmade by my mum who was a seamstress in previous years. They were made from a beautiful soft sage tulle with lots of layers and were lined with sage satin.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
To keep everyone entertained, the couple went all out with their entertainment. “We had Magician Josh Maddocks perform for the guests during cocktail hour, he was a huge hit, and our guests raved about him,” recalls Samantha. “A helter-skelter was provided by Inflate-a-bubbles for the kids and adults alike, which fit with the festival theme. Jukebox Money played in the afternoon into the early evening and had the dancefloor filled. They sang (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life and Justin and I attempted the lift from Dirty Dancing; it was not the most graceful, but he got me into the air to a rapturous applause. DJ Jak Ropa followed and started with our first dance and played into the early hours of the morning, then for all guests staying over, we had a silent disco which carried on until sunrise. We wanted to make the most of every minute and give all of our guests something memorable to go away with. A photo booth was provided with printouts which was a hit, particularly once the drinking got underway. We also had Face ‘n’ Glitz provide an outstanding glitter experience, complete with a glitter bar and walk-around glitter girls to get everybody sparkling for the evening ahead.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“I felt blessed that all of our nearest and dearest were there to help us celebrate,” remembers Samantha. “I was grateful that we both got to spend lots of time together on the day but more importantly, that I got to marry the man of my dreams. The whole day was amazing.
“My son walking me down the aisle alongside my dad was one of the most beautiful moments, and having both our daughters as bridesmaids really made the wedding a coming together of families,” continues the bride. “The best man’s speech was hilarious, and it was wonderful to hear about Justin’s adventures years before we met, although we needed to cover

my mum’s ears a few times! My dad’s speech was very emotional and heartfelt and moved everyone to tears.”
The couple loved working with Alice Jones Photography. “Alice was an absolute joy from our initial contact,” explains Samantha. “She led the way with her creativity which completely encapsulated our vision. She found the most perfect location for golden hour shots and helped make the day and memories of the day perfect.”

Bee mine
Chloe and Paul incorporated their love of bees into their big day at Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa
Chloe and Paul met at work, where Paul was working as a firefighter and Chloe was a passenger service agent. “Our first interaction was Paul getting a zip stuck in his coat, and I recused him,” laughs Chloe. “We didn’t work on shift together very often, but when Paul left to work at a fire station full time, I went to the leaving drinks and we hit it off. We connected in a way I can’t explain, but I felt safe. I wanted to share everything with Paul, and six months later, we moved into our first home together.”
Paul popped the question while the duo were celebrating Chloe’s sister’s birthday. “He asked her permission, and my dad’s too, who
was ready with his camera to capture the moment,” shares the bride. “My sister’s birthday also happens to be our anniversary. I had no idea, but looking back, I should have suspected something was going on when he decided to wear a shirt instead of his normal casual t-shirt. I am very lucky that Paul has a wonderful son, who also gave me a ring. One of my rings was Paul’s great aunties, and the other was Paul’s mum’s first wedding anniversary present from Paul’s dad.”
Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

47 REAL WEDDINGS
We wanted a venue that was local, casual but also intimate. Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa was the first place we looked at, and we knew it was perfect for us.
We chose afternoon tea instead of a formal meal as Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa has a famous link to the creation of afternoon tea, and it felt like a nod to my career of working in a coffee shop. We were hoping for glorious August weather, and that we got, so we didn’t fancy a hot meal on a hot day.
For our favours, we chose ceramic hearts with a printed bee on as a nod to the fact Paul and I call each other bee.
Clemmie and Twine provided the most beautiful flowers for our big day. I met Kelli and Tina through work. I had no question of who was going to provide us with our flowers, and when it turned out Paul had worked with Tina in Boots when he was 16, it was definite. Our ceremony was surrounded by a floating floral display, which we moved to frame us for the wedding breakfast and used again in the evening.
Our ceremony was fairly small, so we were able to have a large square table. This was really important to us, as we’ve received so much support and love from our friends and family that they all deserved a space on the ‘top table’.
We had a visit from a fire engine as a nod to Paul’s job as a firefighter.

I wore a beautiful opened-back dress by Sassi Holford from Bridal Reloved. I love shopping second-hand, partly for the deals, but also the environmental impact. I visited Bridal Reloved as I loved the idea of a dress that already had a past, and the store had so many different styles and designers. My dress was one I skipped over, but my younger sister insisted I tried it on. The Bridal Pixie altered the gown to ensure it fit me perfectly. I wore a veil by Lucy Can’t Dance, a bee necklace from Alex Monroe and earrings from my step-mum, Cathy, which were her late mothers.
My bridesmaids chose dresses from Shades of White. My older sister, Amie, wore light pink, while my younger sister, Phoebe, wore light green. It became apparent very quickly that not one colour suited them both, so we went for different hues and slightly different styles, as Phoebe was eight months pregnant at the time!
Walking down the aisle was a magical moment; I was in a room full of people, but I could only see Paul. Alfie, Paul’s son, had written a speech, but when it came to reading it, he got very emotional, so we waited until the evening. He still didn’t feel comfortable, so Paul read it for him; it was a beautiful moment of a proud father reading the honest words of a lovely boy, who has accepted me into his life and I have an incredible relationship with.
The funniest moment was when it came to exchanging rings; I struggled to slide the ring onto Paul’s finger and announced to everyone: ‘I can’t get it on over your arthritic finger!’ A 12-year age gap means lots of jokes about age!
In the evening, we had a great DJ called Nick Chaplin, who kept everyone entertained.

Meet local musicians and entertainers
To help make your wedding stand out for all the right reasons, it pays to get the entertainment right. For the happy couple, the big day may go by in a flash, but for family and friends, especially travel-weary guests or those with young children, any lulls in the proceedings can dampen the feel-good factor. To make sure your celebration is one to remember, we’ve put together a feature showcasing some of the best musicians and entertainers in the area…

Our experts solve your problems WEDDING WORRIES
BY THE SEASIDE
What would you suggest for a summer-themed wedding cake?
When putting together a design for your cake, think about your favourite memories together and incorporate them to add some personality to your big-day bake. For example, if you’re opting for a seaside theme, a cake like the one pictured would be perfect. This lemon cake was decorated with barnacle meringues, buttercream baby barnacles with lots of coastal flora and foliage and seagrasses with a red kelp dressing under the stand.

FLORAL ROMANCE
I’m trying to keep our wedding as environmentally friendly as possible; do you have any ideas of how we can apply this to our flowers?
Being an environmentally friendly florist, I use British, local, and in-season flowers as they have a natural appearance and hold themselves in a much better way than imported flowers, which come with a huge carbon footprint. Using locally grown flowers gives couples a pretty meadow look on their wedding day rather than the harsh appearance of imported cut flowers. Foraged foliage gives a florist a variety of different things to use meaning the arrangements will be very different to another florist using wholesale flowers. Consider a florist who uses recycled/multiple-use plastics and natural materials that help our planet and the wildlife around us.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
My hubby-to-be and I are having an outdoor, festival-themed wedding; what food would you suggest?
Go for a meat or veggie-sharing platter with extra sides to create a festival feel. We have done many of these at festival-style weddings; they are super easy to eat, and everyone gets to enjoy a little bit of everything rather than a set meal. Sharing food makes for great conversation and brings people together who may not have met each other before.

PURE LUXURY
We’d love to have a luxurious cake on our big day, but we’re worried about the price tag. Do you have any ideas of how we can keep the cost down?
Luxurious wedding cakes come at a higher price due to their size and the intricate details often requested. One way to get maximum detail without spending hours piping on the cake is to use stencilling; there are some amazing designs available that will get the intricate finish you require.
Increasing the quantity of cake can be costly, so you could use stands to create a big impact without having hundreds of portions of cake, such as filler tiers that can contain lights and fresh flowers, hoop stands that continue the floral theme of a cake or the new gravity-defying stands that give height to a cake.
The best advice would be to find a cake designer with experience, give them a set budget and work together to create a luxurious design. They will quite often be able to offer options you may not have thought of.

FLY AWAY WITH ME
What honeymoon destinations are popular at the moment?
I’m going to answer this with a question, where do you picture yourselves when you think of your honeymoon? This answer is different for everyone, and that’s how a honeymoon should be. You wouldn’t buy an unflattering dress that looked great on someone else just because it’s the in-style dress of the month, so why would you do the same for your honeymoon?
You could consider gorgeous beaches in Mauritius, Maldives, Bali and Hawaii or cultural adventures through Thailand, Vietnam and South America. Consider a life-changing animal encounter on a safari in South Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, or discover the wild west travelling through America. Enjoy ultimate luxury aboard a river or ocean cruise taking in multiple destinations, or perhaps a private tour off the beaten track is more your vibe.
What’s great about using a travel consultant like us is that the world is your oyster, and we want you to experience it your way. Once you’re a married couple, this will be your first holiday together, so making sure it’s right for both of you is important to us. Think about what you want from the destination rather than where you want to go, and that’s where a consultant’s personal service really comes into play.

A MEMORABLE MOMENT
How can we make our wedding ceremony personal to us?
There are so many ways that your ceremony can be personal to you. Firstly, consider the use of a celebrant, they are not confined to the structure of legal words which a registrar would be, allowing you to think outside the box. It’s your special day, so share your love story with your family and friends and take them on your journey together. Consider involving family members in different ways, be it through the use of a ritual during your service, such as a sand ceremony or hand tying and have your family choose colours that represent you as individuals and as a couple. There are so many options and bespoke rituals that can be created around your loves and passions; the possibilities are endless.
Write your vows to each other. A celebrant can assist you with this if you wish, and your words can come from the heart and be specific to you as a couple.
Location may also be very important, and with a celebrant, you are not restricted to a certain area of a venue, so if there is a special place you wish to marry which is personal to you, consider a celebrant.
We can also incorporate animals into your ceremony and even have them place a paw print on your commemorative certificate at the end. The options are endless.

Classic luxury
Inspired to create a simple, luxurious shoot with leafy green and white flowers, a team of local suppliers worked together to bring their vision to life in this styled shoot at The Venue at Fulbourn Lodge
Images courtesy of Weddings by Alexandra Arlett
Becky Howard from Legendary Makeup decided to orchestrate a styled shoot themed around opulence but with a contemporary feel. “With a lot of colourful weddings and shoots already taking place, we wanted this shoot to be simpler and more classic with leafy green and white flowers,” shares Becky. “The Venue at Fulbourn Lodge is a purpose-built events barn situated in the heart of the beautiful South Cambridgeshire countryside. With idyllic rural views, it offers a picturesque and relaxed setting for those celebrating their special day. The rustic timber frame barn is filled with character, with a classic but modern feel, and has a gorgeous outdoor landscaped garden and lake. To align with the classic luxury concept, Lily Francis Bridal dressed the model in a simple, sleek A-line wedding dress. With a beautiful V-shape front and back, and a straight skirt and train, this wedding dress was the epitome of chic. This was paired with an elegant, satin edge cathedral-length veil to frame and emphasise the dress.
“I was inspired by old Hollywood glamour and gave the bride flawless skin and smoky eyes, which worked perfectly with the beautiful Hollywood waves created by Piggy Rose Beauty,” continues Becky. “Jess from Copper & Bloom Cambridge has a great eye for modern-luxe design. The tableware set-up of gold and white is elegance personified, with the white providing a sleek appearance. The simplicity of using white candles and the jar candles for the aisle kept the shoot slick and clean. This was paired with a luxurious all-white wedding cake with edible wafer paper ruffles created by Amber’s Bakes and Cakes. It was the perfect mix of fun and elegance. Elly’s Flower Studio was absolutely the right choice for this shoot; sticking to the colour palette of white and green, Elly totally nailed the brief, with the gypsophila arch being a real showstopper.”

The latest trends to leave you looking and feeling your big-day best
Withtrends constantly changing and the added pressure of looking your best, we understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. To help make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some top tips and trend predictions from local suppliers...
ALL EYES ON YOU
Soft waves are a hair trend that I’ve seen a lot of this season. This timeless look radiates elegance and sophistication and enhances a bride’s natural beauty whilst adding a touch of Hollywood glamour.
Bold and eye-catching hair accessories are fabulous, from oversized flowers to vintage-inspired headbands. Adding these accessories can transform a simple up do or loose waves into a show-stopping look.
Natural, radiant skin is always in style. The focus is on achieving a healthy, lit-from-within glow. I create this using a light-weight airbrush foundation and illuminating products to create a fresh and dewy complexion.
I have seen a few brides that have wanted to add a bit of excitement to their make-up. A bold, bright lip in berry or red can make a statement and complement a simple eye look.
Soft shades like rose gold, champagne, and dusty pinks are popular choices for eyeshadow. I like to add delicate, individual lashes to enhance the overall softness of the look.
Brides are opting for a softer, feathery look for their brows. To create a natural look, use a tint and a touch of brow gel to hold them in place.

LOOKING YOUR BEST 65
REST AND RELAXATION
Every bride dreams of looking radiant on her wedding day. At The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, the biggest beauty trend we’ve seen is that our brides want to look like the best version of themselves, not like an unreal TikTok filter.
We take a considered approach to skincare, so while a radianceenhancing facial just before the big day is a great idea, so is investing in your skin a few months before; a combination of getting your skincare routine down and regular, bespoke facials to tackle any concerns you may have, is the best route to looking your best self.
Stress can also be a big factor in skin misbehaving before an event, so we recommend taking some time for yourself away from the wedmin to have a soak in the pool, enjoy a massage and not think about the dreaded seating plan. We’ve seen a trend in brides-to-be coming with just one close friend or family member for a spa day, rather than a massive blow-out hen do, which can sometimes be as stressful as it fun!
Some people might think committing to a once-a-month facial is a little bit extra, but honestly, in the lead-up to your wedding, it can really improve your skin’s health and focus on any challenges, so you don’t
need any emergency action in the week leading up to the wedding! I recommend booking a consultation and bespoke facial six months before, so you can come up with a unique plan with your therapist to suit your skin’s needs.
Book a glow-enhancing facial the week before your wedding, but make sure it’s one you’ve tried before to minimise any risk of a reaction, and so you know what the results will look like.
Wedding planning can be a whirlwind of excitement, but as we all know, it can also be stressful. The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel provides a tranquil oasis where brides can unwind and de-stress before their wedding. I recommend indulging in a soothing massage, such as the ESPA Aromatherapy Massage (from £101 for 60 minutes), to melt away tension and promote relaxation. I believe a calm mind and body are just as important as glowing skin on the big day!

HAIR CARE HERO
A popular hair trend for 2023 is the half-up-half-down look with romantic curls. Gorgeous shiny hair with lots of curls can create volume and look longer than your actual hair, creating a stunning bridal look. Double-twisted braids instead of French braids are more on-trend nowadays. This gives texture and volume, and the good thing about it is that you don’t have to have a lot of hair or length to make the braids.
A sleek low bun is also rising in popularity. This hairstyle shows off your neckline and face and pairs nicely with any wedding dress.

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

TENDER LOVING CARE
I have an outdoor job and my skin really suffers in the winter. How can I repair the ravages of the cold and wind in time for my summer wedding?
A skincare routine is your best friend; I tell all my clients to start this at least six months before their wedding day. The winter can really take its toll on your skin; you need to focus on getting as much moisture as possible into your skin during this time. Invest in a thicker moisturiser in the winter, as the cooling temperatures and central heating will dry your skin out.
My go to products are cleansers, serums and moisturisers containing hyaluronic acid. This ingredient retains moisture to boost plumpness, reduce wrinkles and fine lines whilst leaving your complexion glowing.
Switch your cleanser to an oil or balm-based product; if you’re using a foaming or abrasive cleanser in the summer, switch this out for a cream or oil-based cleanser. In the winter, your skin produces less oil, so it’s important to wash your skin gently to prevent it from being stripped. Even if your skin is naturally oily, it’s most likely producing more because your skin is dehydrated, so don’t forget to drink lots of water.
SPF is a must even in winter, and especially if you’re working outside, the UV rays can still be just as strong in the winter months and even on cloudy days. Opt for an SPF from factor 30 to 50 and apply on your face and other areas that are exposed daily.

Q&A Beauty
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
BRIDAL BEAUTY
How can I get my skin looking it’s best for my big day?
Know your skin; it’s great if you know what works for you however if you need some help finding out more about your skin, visit a facialist or check with your make-up artist. A good skincare routine is a must; cleanse, moisturise and use SPF 50 every morning and in the evening, double cleanse, gentle exfoliant, use serum and moisturise. Book a brow appointment to ensure your brows look their best and avoid any unwanted facial hair by waxing.
If you’re going to do your bridal make-up, I highly recommend you cleanse your skin and give it a gentle exfoliation. I love Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant; leave it on for five mins for extra glow, and don’t forget about your chest and neck areas. Only apply trusted products to avoid allergic reactions. Use a serum, eye cream and moisturiser; my go-to is Weleda Skin Food for dry skin or the Weleda Skin Food Light for oily/normal skin; this can act as a perfect base for your make-up. Apply a layer of setting powder, and lightly dust it over your skin with a fluffy brush, this will make your make-up last all day and into the night.
Follow with a foundation; my favourite is Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and Charlotte Tilbury Radiant Concealer. Don’t forget to use a setting spray to ensure the longevity of your desired look.

NATURAL BEAUTY
I have very dry skin and I’m worried my make-up won’t look right on my wedding day. What advice can you share with me?
For dry skin, I recommend adding hydrochloric acid into your skincare routine. This might sound scary, but the best way to describe hydrochloric acid is that it sucks moisture into the skin and keeps it in there. It holds 1000x times its own weight in water!
Hydrafacials are also amazing, however, I recommend starting these at least a year before the wedding so your skin can get used to it before the big day!

Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene
92
Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
HONEYMOON REVIEW 93
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95
Do not disturb
Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
