For those at the end of their planning journey, we have top tips and advice to ensure your day runs smoothly as well as last-minute touches to create wow-factor events.

Weddings are such joyful occasions, and there’s nothing more special than marrying your soulmate. For those that have been reading the last few issues, you’ll know that my best friend tied the knot this summer and what an incredible day it was. As a bridesmaid, it has been such a special experience helping a dear friend plan such an important event. Watching everything come together on the day was very emotional. I’ll never forget that moment when I watched the bride make her grand entrance – I had to fight back the tears as I couldn’t ruin my make-up! The ceremony was beautiful, with many heartwarming words shared. Overall, we had a fantastic day with plenty of pampering, memorable moments, excellent food and great entertainment. I spent the entire evening living it up on the dancefloor – you should see the videos!

Planning a wedding might seem like a scary or overwhelming experience, but we’re here to guide you through the whole process from the moment you get engaged to the honeymoon. That’s all from me; now sit back, relax and celebrate anything and everything wedding.

Happy planning!

FIVE MINUTES WITH…

Located in Nottingham, Jools Wedding Celebrant works with couples to bring their dream ceremony to life. We caught up with the owner Julia Gaunt to discover more about the company.

Why did you start the company?

I’m very confident, organised, creative and have greate speaking and listening skills. I felt that I could use these skills and the things I enjoy doing in another way, which led me to become a wedding celebrant.

What does a celebrant offer?

A celebrant ceremony is a beautiful service created by the couple and a celebrant who will tell every love story from the beginning to the present day. Couples can create their unique vows and add music, poems and funny stories – anything is possible! It can be as short or as long as you wish, and friends and family can also participate. Celebrant-led ceremonies can take place in most areas no matter if they’re licensed for civil ceremonies or not, including a woodland, beach, garden or hotel. If you wish the wedding to be legal, you must make an appointment at the registrar’s office and go through the formalities – the legal part is very brief.

What is your top tip for finding the perfect supplier?

Wedding fayres are a great place to meet suppliers and celebrants to chat through your ideas – never be afraid the experts questions. Look through this wonderful magazine for up-and-coming fayres, maybe I will see you there!

or on the lawn.

Dodmoor House is a rustic and charming wedding venue made up of three elegant but rustic-stone barns, one for ceremonies, one for wedding breakfasts and the other for overnight stays. The rustic and charming interior features fresh and earthy tones plus plenty of character with original brickwork and beams throughout the spaces. Light fills the rooms in the summer and in the winter, the space is cosy with plenty of fairylights and candles.

Say “I do” in the Courtyard Barn, an intimate space that can accommodate 96 guests and features views over the courtyard. With ceiling beams, a stone floor and a wooden-pallet backdrop, it’s a beautiful space that guests will love. Or opt for the Catesby Barn, which can accommodate 58 people for more intimate ceremonies. The barn boasts high ceilings, fairylights, hanging candelabras and a mezzanine balcony. For those looking to exchange vows outside, say “I do” in the courtyard, the garden, behind the Catesby Barn, outside the main house

Depending on where ceremonies are held, wedding breakfasts take place in one of the barns – usually the Catesby Barn. Each one has various table layouts for different capacities, so it’s always worth talking to the team for more information. The Catesby Barn is the perfect location for evening receptions; here couples will find the main bar and while the tables are cleared after the meal, nearlyweds can enjoy the early evening in the courtyard and the other spaces.

An overnight stay on the wedding night in the Honeymoon Suite is included within the venue’s hire fee and a continental breakfast is served the following day. The property hosts regular open evenings to allow couples and loved ones to visit the venue and see it in all its glory. Lovebirds can also meet a selection of recommended suppliers and sample canapés, drinks and sweet treats.

The team also offers a hire range of décor items such as table plans and help from a personal wedding coordinator to make the planning experience less stressful for couples.

The ultimate

pre-wedding getaway

Located in Retford, Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa is a luxurious property that provides the perfect setting for pre-wedding getaways, hen or stag dos, weddings and minimoons. When the opportunity arose to see the venue in person, I couldn’t wait to discover what makes the hotel such a popular destination.

TIME TO RELAX

Upon arrival, we headed straight to the spa where I was greeted by the friendly staff who showed us around and were on-hand throughout the whole experience to cater for our every need. After being handed robes and slippers, we started off our day with the foot spas before discovering the 11 thermal experiences and the indoor/outdoor vitality pool with water massage jets. My favourite spots were the salt inhalation room and the shower walk which alternated between warm and cold settings. My partner loved the snow storm walk the most, a cold experience that helps boost your immune system. We also enjoyed the sauna, stone bath and steam rooms, each have many benefits for the mind and body.

After going back and forth between rooms, we decided to relax on one of the alpine chalets before testing out the rattan apple and my favourite, the heated loungers.

We had a lovely meal in the Herb Garden Brasserie halfway through our spa day. Here we enjoyed corn-fed chicken with confit chicken bon bon, corn purée and thyme Parisienne potatoes followed by a white chocolate cheesecake with salted caramel, caramelised white chocolate crumb and cocoa tuile.

Why our food was going down, we enjoyed the Sabbia Med session that left us feeling completely relaxed. The 30-minute cycle replicates sunrise to sunset in a dreamy beach setting with a sandy floor, the sound of crashing waves and painted walls to mimic the seaside. The low levels of UV releases plenty of vitamin D and leaves you feeling fabulous.

WINE AND DINE

After spending most of the day relaxing, it was time for dinner in the Restaurant 1650. The AA Rosette restaurant and bistro offers an extensive menu with plenty of options for even the pickiest eaters. The talented chefs create delicious dishes using fresh and local produce where possible, which is evident from the flavours. To start I opted for carrot and coriander soup before tucking into a beer battered haddock with chips, mushy peas and bread and butter. What better way to end the meal than a crème brulé that was cooked to perfection?

One thing that really stood out to me was the dining setting with oak panelling, a contemporary art décor bar and historic touches that provided a homely and cosy atmosphere.

With plenty of rooms, suites and lodges, guests can rest their heads after a full day of pampering. I was lucky enough to spend the night in The Grove, a stunning two-storey lodge that provided the ideal location for a relaxing night in with a lounge, mini kitchen, roll-top bath and walk-in shower. The charming interior and spacious rooms created the perfect setting, we spent the night curled up on the sofa watching movies before heading to bed.

In the morning we were greeted by freshly-baked bread, pastries, fruit, meats and cheeses for breakfast. Not forgetting the fabulous selection of cooked food including all types of eggs, porridge, pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage and more. There are also vegan and vegetarian full breakfast options too.

After the perfect start to the morning, it was sadly time to pack up and go home. However, me and my partner are already playing our trip to return at Christmas, which I know will be oh-so romantic and festive!

Moments that

MATTER

Sophie and Will had the perfect wedding surrounded by loved ones Images courtesy of Rosie Kelly Photography

Sophie

and Will were both living in London when they first met on Tinder and happened to only be a five-minute walk from each other. After they both swiped right and had a brief chat on the app, they decided to meet up and go on a date – the rest is history!

Will proposed to Sophie while on a trip travelling through Belize and Mexico for two weeks. She says, “It was the last day of our holiday when he popped the question on the balcony at our hotel in Tulum. He’d been trying to do it the whole trip but could never find the right moment or pluck up the courage!”

SETTING THE SCENE

When planning their dream wedding, the pair wanted one big party for everyone to get together and enjoy. They set the date for September 11th 2021, and created the perfect wedding.

The pair tied the knot at St Helen’s Church in Lincolnshire, a place where Sophie attended growing up and happened to be where most of her family got married. She says, “My grandparents are also churchwardens there and my nan did the flowers for the ceremony, which was a special way of getting her involved.”

The pair headed to Sophie’s parents’ property, Westwood Farm, after exchanging vows for the reception. “Planning a wedding at home was great as we had free rein to do what we wanted, it took a lot of organising to remember every last detail,” shares the bride.

The reception took place under a traditional-style sailcloth marquee; inside was decorated with two old ladders covered in ivy and hanging festoon lights.

Each table featured beautiful floral centrepieces with natural and loose-style flowers. Guest could find their seats thanks to the table plan, which was created using an old frame and an easel. Different-shaped slates were used for the table numbers.

For favours the pair made two flavours of homemade gin to give to guests: Westwood Farm Damson Gin from the venue’s damson tree and Yeaton Raspberry Gin from Will’s parents’ raspberries in Shropshire.

Canapés served at the drinks reception included soy and honey sausages, shredded beef croquettes with horseradish, crab cakes, onion bhajis, sticky pulled pork bao and cheese and red onion tarts.

For the wedding breakfast, guests enjoyed Lincolnshire beef or butternut Rossini for the main and a trio of desserts. To keep loved ones from going hungry in the evening, sticky lamb in brioche buns were served by Westwood Farm Lamb. The pair had one cask ale from Shropshire and one from Lincolnshire to help their guests feel at home.

Unfortunately, the cake supplier caught Covid-19 the day before the wedding and it was too late to do anything about it, so the pair decided to make do without a cake. However, Will’s cousin surprised them on the day by getting Colin the Caterpillar cakes.

LOOKING THE PART

When it came to finding her dream gown, the bride visited Carina B Couture, where the team guided her through the process of finding the one

Due to covid, Sophie couldn’t take anyone into the appointment with her, but set up a video call with her mum and sister. She fell in love with a Sassi Holford gown and knew it would be perfect for her day. Sophie says, “When I tried the dress on, I loved the long sleeves and low V-neck. It was really comfortable as the bottom was loose and flowing, so I didn’t feel like I needed to watch what I ate or drank on the day!”

The bride wore a veil for the ceremony, which was substituted with a pearl headband in the evening.

The groom and groomsmen all wore traditional morning suits, but Will

REAL WEDDINGS 25

wore a different waistcoat and had an emerald green tie to stand out from the others. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in different style dresses in the same colour.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple hired The Baltic Donkeys to keep guests entertained. The band was absolutely amazing and a massive hit with guests – they had everyone on the dancefloor all night!

The horse trailer photo booth was also popular with guests, and the pair now has plenty of great photos that get more entertaining as the night progressed. The bride says, “My brother-in-law Tom also made a cornhole garden game for people to play during the day, which went down a treat.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The day was full of memorable moments, but seeing Will for the first time stood out most to Sophie. She says, “I was so nervous before the ceremony but felt so happy and excited as soon as I saw him – I couldn’t stop smiling!”

It meant the world to the couple that their loved ones could be a part of their day. The bride comments, “It felt like the first wedding, which was almost completely unaffected by Covid, except from the cake. We could invite all the guests we wanted, were able to sing in church and dance with live music!”

HONEYMOON

After the perfect day, the couple went away on a honeymoon to Afionas in Corfu for a week. They stayed in a beautiful little village on a clifftop overlooking the sea, which has a few amazing restaurants with great views. The pair had a room with their own private pool, which was special and really relaxing for them both.

Melissa and Martin first met through mutual friends and after a lot of persuading, Melissa finally agreed to go on a date. Less than a year later, they bought a house together and discovered they were expecting their first baby.

Martin proposed on Christmas day back in 2014, which was a complete surprise for Melissa. The pair set the date for June 3rd 2022, and created the perfect day surrounded by loved ones.

Here Melissa shares details about their special day…

We wanted a wheelchair-friendly venue for our elderly grandparents and discovered The Quorn Country Hotel. We loved the flexible staff and how we could choose our own menu for the wedding breakfast.

We had tall martini glasses with artificial flowers for our centrepieces.

We stayed the night before the wedding at the hotel.

I wore an A-line dress and accessories to finish off my look. I felt overwhelmed, surprised and emotional when I first saw myself on the day.

The groom and groomsmen hired suits from Quorndon Formal Hire, while the bridesmaids wore blush gowns.

REAL WEDDINGS 31

We hired a DJ to keep guests entertained. We both felt emotional, overwhelmed and happy on the day – it all went so fast.

The ceremony was the best part of the day; it was so lovely and emotional.

The groom’s speech made the day extra special, Martin was so emotionaland it took him a while to get through it as he couldn’t talk – everyonecommented on how heartfelt it was!

We went on a honeymoon to Cyprus for 12 days in a gorgeousfive-star resort.

OH-SO

Amanda and Tom had a modern and minimalistic wedding at The Riding School Images courtesy of The Light Painters

elegant

Amanda and Tom first met while queuing for a club in Derby. “He was very kind, mature, intelligent and well spoken, which I liked”, says Amanda. Tom asked her on a date and thought she was fun, confident and chatty – the rest is history.

Tom proposed at Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate, where the pair had been on a short break away. Amanda says, “It was a total surprise, even though we had been together for nearly eight years. We had been in the spa all afternoon, so I was very relaxed, and Tom planned to take me on a walk around the grounds after dinner. There was a love bench set up under a private archway with candles and champagne; here he popped the question!”

Here Amanda shares details about their special day…

34

We picked The Riding School, Calke Abbey because it was close to home and was a classic blank canvas that we could make our own.

We had a floral arrangement on the windowsill with waterfall flowers and foliage.

There was festoon lighting across the venue, a neon sign of our name, blossom trees around the cake and a guest book table.

We had a simple black and white table plan.

We had a black and white Daimler with a white ribbon on the front.

For centrepieces, we had tall plinth flowers with lots of wild greenery.

REAL WEDDINGS 35

Guests could pick mackerel pâté or Mediterranean tart for starter, slowroasted Derbyshire beef or potato gnocchi for main and cake or cheese and biscuits for pudding.

I wore a long satin dress with a train and a cathedral-length veil before changing in the evening to a backless sequin dress.

I had been working hard, exercising and eating right throughout the pandemic for the last 18 months – I felt amazing on the day!

The groomsmen wore black tuxedos and white shirts, while the bridesmaids wore off-white satin dresses.

The groom wore a tailored dinner suit, patent loake shoes, a white handkerchief from his grandfather and his gold cufflinks.

We had a modern white and gold semi-naked cake with three tiers.

We had a live band play in the evening, which was a big hit with guests.

36

Tom was very emotional on the day while I was buzzing! I had planned this so much and was very chilled on the day.

Tom said that seeing me in my evening dress stood out to him as it was such a surprise.

The dance offs that the band instigated towards the end of the evening were amazing.

A part that stood out was walking down the aisle and the speeches.

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

52

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub

£13, 100ml, www.glossybox.co.uk

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial Cream

£24, 75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, 15ml, www.lookfantastic.com

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology!

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors.

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body.

£18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it looked!

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Q&A Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

HEAVEN SCENT

I’m looking for the perfect perfume for my wedding day. Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

Hollie says: When it comes to planning your special day, selecting your ideal wedding perfume will not only complete your outfit, it will also remind you of the big day for years to come. Scents are renowned for triggering memories, so what better way to remember your momentous and unforgettable occasion than through a new scent for your big day?

You can, of course, choose whichever fragrance you love. But I’d recommend trying a completely new discovery, something you’ve never worn before. This ensures it has no relation to any previous memory and means the new scent will always transport you back to your wedding.

You’ll also want a fragrance that will last throughout the day, so opt for an eau de parfum, which has a higher concentration of fragrance oil (around 25 per cent), which typically makes them stronger and longer lasting. Also, look for such notes as patchouli, white musk, sandalwood, tuberose, vetiver, and freesia as these linger on the skin for longer.

Check out Lancôme La Via Est Belle, Barbour Female, Carolina Herrera Good Girl Supreme, Jennifer Lopez Promise, Ghost Orb Of Night and Estée Lauder Beautiful – all great bridal fragrances. Alternatively, if you’re struggling to find the perfect scent match, flirt before you buy with The Fragrance Shop scent addict subscription, and choose a new 8ml fragrance each month for £12. They’re also perfect to carry with you on the big day. Hollie Race | The Fragrance Shop | www.thefragranceshop.co.uk

THE MANE EVENT

When should I start thinking about booking my hairstylist, and do you have any tips for finding one that’s a perfect fit?

Ideally you need to start looking for a supplier as soon as possible for your big day. Hairstylists can get booked up 18 months in advance and if you have your eye on a particular stylist, you’ll need to get in contact with them as soon as possible to ensure they have your date available.

When looking for a hairstylist, have a look through their portfolio either on their website or social media pages, wherever they post their most recent work. This will give you an idea of the sort of styles they create. Every supplier will be different, so make sure they have examples of the sort of styles you love. They might have perfected the boho bridal look or they’re a pro at the Hollywood wave. Also have a look through their social media to get a feel for them as a person. They’ll be with you and your crew on the morning of your wedding, so it’s important that you all get along.

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

LET THEM EAT CAKE

Popular suppliers get booked up very quickly and if you know there’s a certain company you’d love to work with, get booked in with a deposit as soon as possible – you can work out the finer details later.

When choosing a baker, make sure you’ve seen their style and know what to expect.

Having lots of inspiration images will help the team produce your dream cake, this can be anything from a colour swatch from your bridesmaids’ dresses to images of your venue’s architecture. I’ve used an image of an old crumbling concrete wall for inspiration!

You’ve spent a long time saving for your wedding and bringing the day to life. So, work with your other suppliers such as  the venue stylist and florist to make a showstopping display.

Don’t let friends and family talk you into choosing the cake flavours they like, rather than the ones you want. It’s your wedding and cake, make sure you enjoy every bite.

NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

We’re looking for some fun entertainment for our reception. Do you have any ideas?

For your evening entertainment, a DJ is often the least expensive option. They can offer impressive lighting and flexibility in the tracks they play and cover long periods of time. Live bands are another good option; they can provide high-energy, engaging performances of songs well-known by your guests. Most bands offer some form of DJ service to go alongside their live sets, so it’s possible to have the best of both worlds from just one provider.

Smaller acoustic groups can be an excellent way of accompanying your ceremony, drinks reception or sitdown meal. Many bands can also provide this service, although there are plenty of great stand-alone acoustic acts. Other options for your afternoon include the more traditional string quartet or harpist, but you could also consider things such as a brass, jazz or barbershop group for something a bit different and fun. Don’t forget the giant Jenga, magician, mini golf, bouncy castles and more for more afternoon entertainment!

THE DREAM TEAM

We’re looking for a wedding photographer, but we’re worried about booking someone we’ve never met online. Do you have any suggestions?

There are plenty of ways to make sure you’re picking the right wedding photographer for your big day. If booking someone you’ve never met is niggling at your list of wedding things to worry about, here are my top three tips.

Doing plenty of research will help gauge whether a photographer is right for you. Their style and personality will usually be shouted from the rooftops on their website and social media pages, so get searching and scrolling. A photographer spends a long time developing their style, so depending on whether you love light and airy or dark and moody shots, find a photographer whose work you absolutely love.

Most of my clients don’t meet me in person before their big day, but a Zoom call is an excellent way to break the ice, ask any questions you may have and see if you all get along. Ask many questions as a great photographer will put your mind at ease and reassure you.

TIERS OF JOY

What advice can you share with us in the lead up to our special day to ensure we have our dream cake?

With the power of social media and the internet, you could plan a wedding in a few weeks. However, plan as far ahead as possible. Anything can happen in the climate we live in today, so expect the unexpected. If possible, hire an experienced wedding planner, the last thing you need in the days and weeks leading up to your big day is running around after suppliers.

In regard to your wedding cake, desserts and even favours, speak to your baker as early as possible so they can advise on what they can provide and ensure they have everything needed. Know your theme, colour scheme and style of cake you like. If there are ever any changes, always be sure to update the team so they can adjust your order to ensure they fit in with your day perfectly. Make the process about you and your other half, don’t worry about pleasing guests - if you’re happy, they’ll be happy.

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL

We’re trying to decide what time of year to get married but can’t make a decision. What flowers are available each season and are there any ways of saving money?

To save money, don’t feel the pressure to put flowers everywhere. Choose a wow-factor design, such as an arch or moon gate as a talking point between guests and for the perfect photography spot. Your florist may even be able to relocate these designs from the ceremony to the reception area.

Resist the urge to place bud vases everywhere or have elaborate table designs; think outside the box. How about renting herbs or small plants for the tables? I also suggest repurposing bouquets for the table centrepieces or even reducing the number of personal flowers. In season, flowers and foliage can be less expensive and of better quality. My favourite flowers for winter include hypericum berries, sea Holly and hellebores. For spring I love the beautiful ranunculus, peonies and freesias, while I love working with nigella, stocks and scabiosa in summer. Dahlias and chocolate cosmos are my favourite in autumn.

Talk to your florist for advice; it’s our job to source the best blooms for you as a couple, your venue, the designs and your budget.

Ensure everything runs smoothly with our top 10 tips to big-day transport

TIMELINE

Map out an itinerary of the big day – how much time will be spent where and when – and share this with your transport company. Here, you’ll want to spend time considering if there are any factors along the way that will affect your transport, such as whether your ceremony and reception are in different locations and if you want the car to stay for photos. We recommend seeking out suppliers who will only book your vehicle into your wedding for the day, meaning they won’t be constantly clock-watching.

Discuss travel times with your transport provider and bear in mind some vehicles can travel faster than others! Just because your car can get from A to Be in a certain time, it doesn’t mean a vintage motor or horse and carriage can cover the same distance as fast! Finally on this note, be prepared! Check in with your driver or company the week of the wedding to make sure they have the correct address, timing and emergency phone numbers.

Make sure you check out every detail of the agreement when you book and ensure you know exactly what’s included. Here are a few of the things you’ll need to look out for:

How long do you have the transport for?

Is there a charge for unforeseen overtime?

Will there be an extra charge for photos?

How are you being charged? Is it a flat fee or based on mileage and petrol costs? How much is the deposit?

Does the supplier have a contingency plan in place in case of vehicle breakdown or driver illness?

TRANSPORT 71

REPUTATION

Always look for a reputable supplier you can rely on. Look for a company with plenty of great reviews and arrange to meet them. It’s also worth asking to see the vehicle you’ll be riding in on the day so there are no surprises. If they’re reluctant to show you, there’s something amiss! Wedding fairs offer a good opportunity for this. Also, don’t be afraid to ask to see details of insurance and licensing.

GET CREATIVE

Just as you would any element of your day, you can look for transport to fit your personalities as well as the vibe for your day. For a rustic wedding, think super-cool VW Campervans! Vintage Camper Hire first started in 2015 after owner Anna Davidson purchased a VW camper now called Betsy after a sleepless night dreaming of a new opportunity. The Volkswagen T2 Bay two litre petrol camper seats four passengers plus a chauffeur, who happens to be Anna herself. She says, “The buzz of driving my little love-bus full of happy loved-up people is the best feeling! All the waves and smiles from bystanders are always a highlight of every

ALL ABOARD!

Have a think about who you need to provide transport for. While this might largely depend on your budget, you may want to give a thought to your guests if your ceremony and reception are some distance apart, or if the venue is particularly difficult to reach. If you’re asking your loved ones to make a tricky journey, you might want to lend them a hand.

A routemaster bus is the perfect way to transport large groups to one venue to another and looks showstopping in photographs too!

wedding day.” She continues, “People always comment on my attention to detail and extensive knowledge of the industry - I have a lot of experience after seven years and I know how best to plan for departures and arrivals for smooth transitions between venues.”

ANNA’S TOP TIP!

Book a company with a passion for weddings and room for your glorious, voluminous dress.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN?

Your guests will need to be the first to arrive at the ceremony, and they’ll be followed by the groom and grooms party. Traditionally, the bridesmaids travel to the ceremony with the mother-of-the-bride, while the bride follows on afterwards with her father, or whoever she has chosen to walk her down the aisle. Think about your budget and ask your prospective suppliers what they’d recommend. Some may be able to make repeat journeys to come back for different members of the wedding party, others may suggest you book multiple vehicles if this isn’t practical. To save money you could hire one vehicle for the bride, later for the newlyweds, and book taxis for your best girls.

72

WHEN TO BOOK

The quick answer is: as early as possible. Some suppliers will only have one vehicle, their pride and joy, and can only be in one place at one time – secure your date to avoid disappointment.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Find out whether your supplier provides any décor in the shape of palettefitting ribbons or flowers for the parcel shelf as part of the package or for an additional charge. If not, check whether they’re happy for you to make your own arrangements on that front.

We also recommend enquiring about the chauffeur’s attire! You don’t want anyone letting the side down, and full livery looks oh-so smart.

SNAP HAPPY

You’ve devoted as much care and attention to choosing your transport as to any other element of your day, so don’t miss out on capturing those all-important photographs. When booking make sure you’ve allocated time for this.

If your ceremony and reception are at the same venue, why not ask if you can take a little trip together just the two of you, after the “I dos.” This time to soak up those first few moments as newlyweds will be precious and memorable. Plus if you can bring your photographer along, there’ll be opportunities to get some couple shots at some fabulous locations along the way.

SURPRISE!

Looking for an extra special gift for your spouse-to-be and their party on the morning of the wedding? A sports car to get them to the ceremony on time will certainly be one to remember for the motoring enthusiast!

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

HONEYMOONS 81

The ultimate

destination

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

82

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!
