Your Hampshire & Dorset Wedding is 100, and doesn’t it look great for its age? That’s right, well into our 17th year of publishing, we’re celebrating our 100th issue! I’ve been the editor of this wonderful title since issue 92 and feel incredibly proud to have been part of its history.

The first issue hit the shelves in the March of 2007 and boy have things changed since then! I managed to find a copy of issue two in the archives and dusted it off to find that fashion had more in common with the 1990s than with the 2020s. Designs were all about taffeta, boned bodies and bags of embellishment – words I hardly hear these days in relation to wedding dresses. What’s more, it was rare indeed to see a groom not sporting a cravat.

However, some things don’t change. Then editor Demelza, looking into the world of wedding entertainment, told readers: “Your wedding music will have a lasting impression on your guests. It forms an integral part of the day and can create just the right atmosphere, meaning that you have to choose carefully and consider what is suitable along with what best reflects your personal taste.” And that’s as true now as it ever was.

Who knew that Pantone’s colour of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, was as hot then as it is now? We featured the real wedding of Carolyn and Damon who tied the knot in September, 2006. The groom sported a hot pink cravat, while the beautiful bridesmaids were all dressed to match in gowns of the same hue.

Realising a dream, maker and creator Collete Ford at Cockatoo Make and Do Studio has opened her first full-time studio at The Courtyard Craft Centre in Lytchett Minster. The exciting achievement allows nearlyweds to visit and discuss creating a lasting memento of their wedding day by encapsulating their flowers in resin.

Collete has been working with resin for the past three years, developing a wide range of items with something for every budget. With an ever-increasing selection to choose from, couples will be able to select something special. The company offers a local collection service that ensures the flowers are dried to perfection, although couples can send their flowers by post or deliver the blooms to the studio.

Couples will also soon have the option of a laser-engraved range, made from wood or acrylic, for personalised thank-you gifts or quirky wedding favours.

The Balmer Lawn Hotel provided a beautiful backdrop to Nicola and Byron’s wedding

These lovebirds first met online before they arranged to meet in person. Nicola says, “Byron ghosted me the day of our first date, so I assumed I’d been stood up until he called at 7:30 pm to say he’d been stuck at work and would meet me an hour later in Lymington. Byron’s laid-back attitude complemented mine and, while it drives me crazy, I loved just going with the flow.” After a holiday with Nicola’s family six months later, Nicola realised this was the man she wanted to marry as Byron slotted straight into the family. After returning from a holiday in Turkey after Nicola’s 30th birthday, the pair decided to take their dog for a walk on the beach after work. On the way, Byron had taken a ‘wrong turn’ leading them to Lepe beach, which holds some pretty important memories for Nicola as some ashes of loved

ones are scattered there. She says, “We walked the dog and put him back in the car when I discovered a bunch of yellow roses in the boot – my favourite flower! We have a tradition of leaving flowers there in memory of loved ones, and Byron suggested we take them down to the waterfront. At this point, I still had no suspicion anything was happening. I was about to put my flowers in the sea when he came out with a very cheesy line, ‘There are three flowers here; one for your past, one for the present and one for our future”, before getting down on one knee and presented a ring. The next five minutes were a blur of tears and shock. To this day, I’m not actually sure if he even asked me to marry him as I cried and laughed as he placed the ring on my finger.”

Byron wanted an old country house with history while I was after a modern and contemporary look; Balmer Lawn Hotel has a perfect mixture of both!

We had to postpone our original date due to Covid and tied the knot while I was six months pregnant so, I couldn’t wear my original wedding gown. I picked a lace dress to accommodate a growing bump!

White and blue hydrangeas made up our flower arrangements. I remember feeling emotional and excited after getting ready.

We loved our white and blue cake, which consisted of chocolate, Bakewell and lemon flavours.

My beautiful bridesmaids wore ice-blue dresses with lace fronts and cowl backs.

A funny moment was when my mum and sisters let off confetti cannons during our first dance, which didn’t all go off simultaneously!

Everyone enjoyed the photo booth, and it provided us with a great keepsake that doubled up as our guest book.

After being postponed for 11 months, we were so happy to safely share our day with friends and family.

We had a great DJ who catered to all the requests and kept the dancefloor busy.

Our wedding coordinator at Balmer Lawn Hotel, was very attentive and helpful! During our meeting to discuss our options, she was kind, supportive and caring. She was with us on the day, ensuring it all ran smoothly and is a real credit to the venue.

The catering team were flawless on the wedding day. They even helped my father-in-law, who had mobility issues on the day. The team at the hotel were incredible.

As I was heavily pregnant when we got married, we decided to just have time at home after the wedding. We have a 10-day cruise booked this year instead and have managed to rope in my parents to come so they can look after our son so we can also have some quality time together.

James and Lauren had a garden wedding with a pastel blue colour scheme

Thesechildhood sweethearts started dating in secondary school and never looked back! “I think our biggest attraction to each other was how much we both enjoyed life, from sport to the outdoors,” says James. He adds, “We both have many shared interests from having played in bands growing up together, and both focused on university before moving to London to live together for our jobs.”

James proposed on a trip to Oslo, Norway. The original plan was a hike to lake Maridalsvannet on their 10 year anniversary of dating, which happened but not in the weather he’d wished for! They arrived at the lake but couldn’t see anything as it poured with rain. They managed to find Grefsenkollen restaurant to dry off before the sun brightened the day, and he proposed on top of a hill overlooking Oslo. It was supposed to be a big surprise, although Lauren spotted the box in his pocket the day before!

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple aimed to create a relaxed environment for the wedding day, which the pair’s photographer Veronika helped them achieve by explaining how guests take the lead from the newlyweds. So the lovebirds consciously decided to set the tone, which paid off on the day and showed in photos – especially in the game of cricket!

When it came to finding their dream venue, Wintershill Hall was a no-brainer! The beautiful backdrop of the house, the gardens and spaces to explore ticked all the boxes. Plus, the location was one mile down the road from Durley Church, where they tied the knot surrounded by their loved ones.

A marquee provided the perfect space for the garden-themed wedding breakfast and reception. The centrepieces featured vases made by the couple’s siblings, which Claudia & B filled with stunning blooms. The table plan was presented on a mirror, and each table was named after a special place to the pair, like a holiday destination.

Lauren knew her aunty’s famous treats, usually made at Christmas, would make the perfect wedding favours. Her mum created boxes matching the colour scheme to present the treats.

Gastro Catering provided the food for the wedding breakfast, which started with a pulled pork doughnut and a fishcake with half a quail’s egg on top for canapés. Guests then had a shared tapas starter, guinea fowl for the main and a trio of desserts for pudding. Dough & Deer provided pizzas, ensuring guests didn’t go hungry in the evening, while Clink & Drink Mobile Bars provided drinks throughout the day (the newlyweds supplied wine and prosecco for the tables).

A massive hit with the guests was the dessert table full of goodies, as well as the four-tiered cake that went down a treat! Flavours included lemon and elderflower, salted caramel and apple, and vanilla and carrot cake.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride went to Lyn Ashworth in Burton-Upon-Trent for her dress and fell in love with a gown called May, especially the silhouette and the look of the fabric. She lengthened the train and added a detachable jacket made of 3D floral lace.

When getting ready on the big day, the bride wanted a natural look and make-up artist Rebecca hit the brief! Hairstyle Katrina created a stunning up do to show off the gown and the whole look came together beautifully!

The bride finished her look with a veil, blue shoes from LK Bennett for the ceremony and diamond earrings from James as a gift. In the evening, the bride took off the lace jacket, put on a

white headband, and changed into party shoes from Jimmy Choo. However, they didn’t last long with all the dancing, and the bride wore her Veja trainers.

James wore the same as his groomsmen, tails with a baby blue waistcoat to match the bridesmaids and the day’s overall theme. Lauren’s best girls looked beautiful in blue gowns from Maids to Measure. The bride chose the colour but allowed them all to pick their own style to ensure everyone was comfortable. The flowergirl wore a dress from JJ’s House.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Since James and Lauren were involved in music when they were younger and loved live music, picking a great band was essential. Soulstar Music were a hit with the pair and guests! Singer Katy has an incredible voice, and the band was flawless. They also learnt the lovebird’s first dance song, and the pair couldn’t recommend them more.

Suiting the relaxed vibe of the day, a cricket match was held in the middle of the grounds, roping in as many guests as possible who didn’t mind picking up a grass stain or two.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple’s wedding was full of memorable moments from start to finish. Lauren says, “What stood out for me was how relaxed all our guests were throughout the day. When the band came on, people were dancing and having a great time, which was lovely. At the end of the evening, our guests created an arch for us to leave, but they all continued to run down the garden and there was an ongoing arch, which was really special.” James says, “My groomsman making an effort to travel from Australia was so special, and we appreciate loved ones baking to add to the dessert table. Edward at Wintershill Hall took out all the stress of dealing with so many suppliers arriving over the week – we’re so thankful for the team’s help!”

HONEYMOON

Lauren and James went to Canada for two weeks for their honeymoon. They stayed in Vancouver Island and Whistler for the first week before they flew to Toronto just outside the city for the second. James says, “The scenery in Canada is so beautiful, and one of the highlights was Chief Hike in Squamish, Whistler. The array of wildlife was also a highlight.”

These lovebirds met at Antonio’s Spanish Restaurant & Tapas Bar in Fareham and instantly hit it off! Bradley proposed at midnight on New Year’s Day, with fireworks bursting into the sky, twinkling like stars around them. The pair had chosen a ring together, but Sam had no idea when he would ‘pop the question’. Here the bride shares details about their special day…

Our ceremony and wedding breakfast took place in The Albert Room at The Royal Hotel. It was an intimate affair with 30 guests.

My lovely Mum and I have stayed at The Royal Hotel for 14 years. We are known as the ‘loyal royals’. I didn’t hesitate to choose the property for my wedding venue as the staff are like family to us.

The table centrepieces, table plan and favours were Mermaid Gin-themed as the wedding took place on the Isle of Wight, where the Isle of Wight Distillery makes the gin. The company uses local, wild-foraged and ethically sourced botanical ingredients.

I have worked for Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries, as a partnerships marketing manager for more than 19 years and passionately promote the island as a destination. I love the Isle of Wight and consider myself a true ambassador, promoting all that’s great on the island. Of course, we used the company to get to the destination.

The evening reception occurred three weeks later with 100 people at The Port House, overlooking Port Solent Marina in Portsmouth, where Bradley and I had our first dance.

We had Mermaid Gin miniatures for wedding favours, and all the tables were named after the different flavour options.

I had the most amazing galaxy orchids in my bouquet, which the groom also had in his buttonhole. The brief to the florist was a spectacular spray, and the team nailed it!

The two-tiered cake was hexagon shaped, just like my engagement ring. The bake featured galaxy orchid sugar work flowers on the top.

I looked at myself in the mirror, and everything came together beautifully! My hair, make-up, nails, dress and accessories were just perfect.

I wore a glitzy A-line dress with iridescent organza, stunning lace, glittering sequins and a sweetheart bodice.

We both had to fight back the tears as I walked down the aisle! My twin sister, Zara, gave me away as we lost our dad aged twelve.

Bradley, his best man and his stepfather wore matching suits from Moss Bros.

I asked my hairdresser the time while getting ready. She replied, ‘It’s 11:11 am, which is the angel number,’ which I found out signifies new beginnings. Whether you’re about to embark on a new passage or are already on the right path, seeing 1111 emphasises that. Experts say that you should focus and use it to indicate that you’re on the right track when you see it. I’m very spiritual, and that will stay with me forever.

We had DJs for the receptions at The Port House, who made a special trip over from the Isle of Wight for the evening to entertain us.

The best man, Sam, delivered the funniest speech! He proposed a ‘toast’ and promptly handed us a piece of toast ‒ hilarious!

We have lived at Walnut Farm for eight years and have been running the Glamping Site for seven years. Nestled amongst some of Dorset’s finest rolling hills, our glamping accommodation is a real immersion in nature and a true escape without sacrificing any of life’s little luxuries. Each accommodation has a heated en-suite bathroom with powerful showers, a private kitchen with all the essentials, a private kadai firepit area, as well as inside and outside dining areas for long lunches with stunning views. If it gets chilly, you can turn on the heated blankets on the super-king bed and stargaze through the window while listening to just the crackle of the stove woodburner. There are endless activities to do on the farm, including a natural swimming lake with a paddle board, grass tennis court, wood-fired hot tub, tug of war, croquet, hammocks and acres of beautiful countryside to discover.

I love helping to organise hen parties and can be involved as much or as little as you’d like. We can offer just accommodation right through to a full suite of catering and activities for the weekend. We work with great local businesses to provide fun activities throughout the weekend, like cocktail making, life drawing, paddle boarding, speed boating, vineyard tour and yoga sessions; there’s something for everyone. For meals, we offer delicious breakfasts and one of the evenings is always spent around our wood-fired pizza oven, where we make and bake delicious food and is always great fun! I’m always on hand to help you create a weekend you will always remember.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love having groups on-site because it brings the place alive! There’s so much space with a relaxed and happy vibe. Everyone mills around and then can come together in our Cherry Orchard or barn for dining and socialising. It’s so atmospheric with firebowls, festoon lighting and a smattering of laughter. My favourite part has to be listening to the happy sounds that fill the air around the farm.

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

Enjoy it! I remember feeling like I was walking on clouds when we tied the knot. It’s such a light, happy and carefree time, soak it all up! I have just celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary and there are still some clouds, but with an entourage of children, dogs and a farm.

I’m planning my wedding now! If I were to say anything, it would be to remember to enjoy each step. I already find myself counting down the days to the big day, and the planning process has been fun too! Relax and enjoy the experience every step of the way.

We do everything from prop building to electronics to video production. But most of all, I love storytelling! There are so many photographers out there! How do we choose the right one for us?

The first thing to do is to narrow down the suppliers you’re looking at based on the style of photography you like seeing the most, such as posed, formal, contemporary and documentary styles – their portfolio should speak to you. Photographers with a wide range of skills in many genres are often the most versatile and creative, as many genres hone specific transferable skills that can be used in wedding photography. For example, I spend a lot of time doing street photography and people-watching; this allows me to be on my A-game during wedding shoots. I see things before they happen and capture those moments that are gone in a split second.

Once you know the style you like, the next step could be sending out an email or sending a message through social media. The promptness of a reply will indicate how reactive they are. The last thing you want is to wait days for a response to questions!

Often, it’s also great to arrange a face-to-face meeting as you want to ensure you gel with your photographer, but this can also be done through a video call as not everyone can be free at the same time these days!

When should my mum start looking to buy her mother-of-thebride outfit?

Start your search six months in advance for several reasons! Unlike the high street and bridal shops, the available stock is on display ‒it’s unlikely the team can order in another size. Like many occasion wear companies, we place orders six months in advance as the designers cut to order before moving on to another season. We also order limited numbers, and not every size is available. As you would expect, the popular sizes go the quickest. We carry more than 1,000 dresses in store with one of the largest selections in Hampshire and Dorset. This also keeps the exclusivity so the market isn’t flooded with the same designs.

Another thing to take into account is during peak season, seamstresses become very busy, and you may not get an appointment for any alterations needed if you purchase your outfit close to the event date. During peak times, the turnaround can be eight to 10 weeks or even more.

Start your search early, and if you find an outfit you love, don’t leave the store without it! Too often, we have to deal with disappointed ladies who have gone away to think about it and return only to find the dress they loved is now sold.

WarPaint For Men shares its make-up and skincare tips for grooms-to-be

Ourgrooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with the founder of WarPaint For Men, Danny Gray, to discuss his skincare advice for grooms-to-be.

Base prep – As great make-up starts with healthy skin, preparation is key to ensuring any products you apply, like tinted moisturiser or concealer, sit well and last all day. Start by using a hydrating cleanser with warm water to wash your face. Follow this up with a hydrating moisturiser and a primer to create a great base for your make-up. It’s a good idea to leave the primer for a minute or so before applying any products.

SPF always – It’s important to wear SPF every single day to protect your skin from sun damage. Don’t worry; sun cream designed for your face isn’t the same greasy stuff you’d use for your body. It's often lighter and non-greasy, helping to create a good base for make-up.

Foundation vs tinted moisturiser –Sometimes, foundation can feel a bit too much in the warmer months, so instead, you can opt for a tinted moisturiser. These offer light coverage for your complexion while keeping your skin moisturised.

Cool eyes – Using an eye cream is a great way to combat dark undereyes and crow’s feet. A hack to really wake up and refresh tired eyes is to keep your eye cream in the fridge. Anything cooling will help depuff your eyes and

help you feel fresher on a hot day.

Even complexion – To make sure your make-up looks even and natural, use a brush or sponge for application. When applying foundation or tinted moisturiser, blend it all over your face, up to your hairline, and down your neck. Take extra care to blend in areas that crease, which might get warmer during the summer, such as around the nose and under the eyes.

Get bronzed – Do you want that just-backfrom-holiday look without reaching for the fake tan? Try using a bronzer to lightly contour the face and add extra warmth to your skin. Lightly sweep the bronzer across the top of your forehead and cheekbones using a powder brush, and gently buff out any harsh lines using the brush.

Facial hair focus – Are your beard or brows looking a little patchy, or lighter after time in the sun? Keep your facial hair looking fuller and thicker with a make-up pencil. Keep the pencil sharp, and you’ll be able to draw hair-like strokes to fill any patches or lighter areas. Try using a small comb to blend and shape the hair.

Don’t sweat it – If you’re worried about looking sweaty or oily, using a light, translucent powder on the face can help take away shine. Gently sweep the powder in circular motions over any areas of your face that can look shiny, usually the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

Editor Claire Ridley fell in love with this year-round honeymoon hotspot

A LUXURY RETREAT

Nestled on the north coast of the island in Anse la Raie (a popular kite surfing spot) sits the five-star, eco-committed boutique hotel Paradise Cove. With Mauritius fast becoming a sustainable island, Paradise Cove’s effort to go green includes being part of the Positive Impact Movement (created by the Attitude hotel group) ensuring local sourcing and no single-use plastic.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was excited to visit this adults-only tropical paradise, an acclaimed Small Luxury Hotels of the World, having benefitted from a renovation in 2019. It offers a warm welcome with 75 rooms and suites including the Deluxe Premium Rooms, one of which was to become my home for three blissful nights. This honeymoon hideout has been authentically designed in the island’s signature style with wood, rattan and tropical palm-print wallpaper and furnishings.

The rooms have been positioned to admire the panoramic cove views, along with the cluster of other areas that make up this glamorous getaway. Centred around the main reception built under a charming thatch roof is the stylish STAY bar; the complimentary tea bar boasting locally grown flavours; the main swimming pool where I enjoyed an early morning dip each day and The Dining Room restaurant where the delicious buffet breakfast was brimming with exotic flavours.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

There’s so much choice between the four restaurants at this dreamy destination with a Dine-Around experience available in three of them for half-board and all-inclusive guests. For delicious sushi, the à la carte Japanese XO restaurant won’t disappoint while if it’s seafood you’re after, try the Cove Restaurant’s private kiosks on the sand for catch of the day.

I was in for a treat at the trendy Peninsular Restaurant and bar perched

overlooking the jetty and lagoon with far-flung views stretching across to the five north islands in one direction, and the new infinity pool (that’s heated during the winter months) in the other. A highlight was an invite to the launch of the new five-course vegan fine dining experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alexis Gauthier. I tucked into a fondant heart of palm made with pressed watermelon followed by a semi-confit cut of giraumon with a medley of grains and wild rice. The lychee wine is a must-try while you’re on the island, it became my favourite tipple of the trip!

RIDING THE OCEAN WAVES

I was lucky enough to hop on board the hotel’s 12-seat catamaran for a full-day cruise around Îlot Gabriel and Île Plate (also known as the Flat Island). After settling in for a suntan, and a delicious barbecue lunch, the boat reached Coin de Mire where it was time to grab my swimmers and jump into the warm Indian Ocean to snorkel (dive enthusiasts can scuba dive here).

Looking to make a memory on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon? Then book a sunset cruise or the Stargazing experience with an astrologer out on the jetty which is just one of the many You&Me Moments the resort offers.

Back on land, activities include yoga, Tai Chi, a gym plus two floodlit tennis courts. One of my favourite pastimes was relaxing in the cute love nests dotted around the grounds, promising privacy for honeymooners.

ISLAND ESCAPE

The wellness journey starts the moment you enter the lush open-air spa where

the tempting treatments are known as Beauty Rituals of the World of the organic French brand Cinq Mondes. I indulged in a 50-minute full body massage with therapist Samantha who used a scented pure coconut oil made on the island. Dreaming of a couple’s massage in one of the love nests at the water’s edge? Consider it done!

WITH LOVE FROM MAURITIUS

Step back in time at the historic Château De Labourdonnais, a twostorey, colonial-style Creole mansion and heritage site which was once a sugar plantation. This local landmark boasts French-style furnishings plus an orchard in the grounds that contributes to the fruit production on the island. A WARM WELCOME

I was invited to stay at the newly opened adults-only Sunrise Attitude, a four-star hotel committed to tourism with a positive impact with 153 rooms commanding prime position on the east coast. It’s opposite the powder-white sandy beach at Belle Mare boasting picture-perfect views of the clear lagoon which I couldn’t wait to swim in. Beach volley is a pastime here, along with sundowners on the shore - the local Phoenix Beer is a must-try!

Stand-out features include eight villas with plunge pools where you can wake up to room service. The 28 swimup rooms are another fab offering for honeymooners, linking each terrace to the main Papaya Pool and swim-up bar, plus there’s also Bar 31 boasting a stunning view of the beach and pool.

As with all eight Attitude properties, Sunrise Attitude has been designed in keeping with the local surroundings, marrying earthy tones with on-trend, hand-crafted furnishings created by local artisans using locally sourced materials including raffia. In their bid to eliminate single-use plastic, this eco resort provides you with a reusable water bottle and tea and coffee are collected from reusable glass jars at the Bulk Shop - don’t miss sampling the local passionfruit, mango and vanilla tea!

DINE IN STYLE

I had high expectations for an authentic tapas-style dinner at the brand’s signature Kot Nou restaurant (present at all Attitude hotels) and I wasn’t disappointed – you can take a cookery class here to learn the local recipes.

Similar to Paradise Cove, the DineAround option allows you to pick between three restaurants on a halfboard basis where you’ll be spoilt for choice! The Market restaurant specialises in local and international delicacies using the freshest seasonal and sustainable ingredients – I tucked into vegan pancakes for breakfast.

The Social House restaurant and bar is an informal setting playing live music during the evening where I shared tasty vegan platters, and my favourite spot for lunch had to be Taba-j, the brightly painted kiosk serving traditional takeout street food. I couldn’t get enough of the local roti washed down with alouda (a Mauritian milkshake). Experience one of your first meals as newlyweds with an invite to a local team member’s home for an Otentik dinner. My host was Concita Fortuno, who welcomed me for a wonderful evening of food, music and dance – she even taught me how to cook gateaux piment (chilli bites!)

EARLY TO RISE

I couldn’t wait to experience the Secret Sunrise guided meditation to music on the beach – even if it did mean getting up earlier than normal! Chilling out wearing headphones, it was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s free and takes place twice a week and a private 20-minute session can be arranged, with large groups invited to experience the interactive dance session.

LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN

I indulged in treatments at the new Spa POZ (meaning to relax and take a break). Dotted within this tranquil leafy space are single and double open-air creole treatment huts, a salt hammam (that helps to soothe skin problems) and a beauty salon. The vegan spa products packaged in reusable tins are handmade on the island using local plants with 5% of each purchase at Spa POZ (and from the Otentik Bazaars selling souvenirs) donated to

the Green Attitude Foundation helping fund sustainable development projects.

I couldn’t wait to take the raft over to Gran Zil for a beach barbecue lunch and chill out in an over-water hammock - I didn’t want to leave. Olivia Gibson discovers the delights of Provence at Hôtel Crillon le Brave

Known for its diverse landscapes, picturesque views, iconic lavender fields, vineyards and Mediterranean coastline, Provence is the ultimate honeymoon destination that oozes romance at every turn. When the opportunity arose to visit Maisons Pariente’s Hotel Crillon le Brave, I packed my bags and headed to the airport alongside my partner for a magical stay at the sought-after property.

After a short flight and transfers to the five-star destination, we were welcomed by the oh-so-accommodating staff, who gave us a personal tour of the hotel. The charming spaces captured our hearts from the moment we arrived – it was like something out of a movie! The architecture made from blond Crillon stone is perched at the top of the village, boasting captivating views of Mont-Ventoux and the surrounding rolling countryside. Every corner of the private setting offered a stunning backdrop to escape the outside world and disconnect for a while.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED

While strolling through the labyrinth of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, hand-in-hand, we had to take a step back to bask in the gentle breeze, chirping birds and the occasional church bells. Together it created the ideal atmosphere to relax while enjoying a delicious Provençal buffet for breakfast on the panoramic terrace. What better way to start the morning than by eating delicious food while enjoying such breathtaking and wide-ranging views? We tucked into homemade pastries, fresh fruit and granola on our first morning before enjoying a cooked breakfast with freshly baked breads on our second day ‒ the Nyons olive bread is a must try!

PAMPERING PLANS

The Spa des Écuries is the perfect location to relax with various beauty,

body and facial treatments. Located in an ancient 18th-century stonevaulted stable with three treatment rooms, one of which is a double room, the team has paid close attention to the spa with cosy features and charming touches to create a calming atmosphere. After being greeted by the beauty therapist, I was whisked away to a room for an expertly executed massage. During my hour-long treatment, the masseuse went to town tackling my problem areas using traditional massage techniques to help me relax, reduce muscle tension throughout my body, and promote blood circulation. I felt all my worries melt away, as well as my knots. An aroma of essential oils filled the dark-lit room and I almost drifted off! The intimate setting combines gentle and effective approaches to enhancing overall wellbeing – I felt fully disconnected from the outside world, bliss!

REST AND RELAX

With 17 bedrooms and 17 suites, the hotel offers a stunning range of spaces for all celebrations. Our beautiful suite was complete with a spacious bedroom, lounge area and bathroom with all the amenities needed. The interior was something out of a storybook with a charming style, plush furnishing, neutral materials, an ornate fireplace and a green colour scheme. The red floor tiles are typical of Provence and can be seen throughout the space, through to the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub, double sinks and a spacious shower. The luxurious touches continued to the living room with a flat-screen TV, minibar, tasteful artwork, comfortable sofas and armchairs. With the summer approaching, we were thankful for the adjustable air conditioning too!

Sleeping in the large, king-sized bed was like laying on a fluffy cloud. The large windows overlooking the valley allowed plenty of natural light for a gentle and calming morning wake-up call, leaving us feeling wellrested and rejuvenated.

MAKING A SPLASH

I was desperate to catch some rays after the winter months, and the pool area at Hôtel Crillon le Brave was just what we needed! The heated, turquoise water overlooked the surrounding countryside and provided just enough space to get some morning lengths in. We spent most of our time in the tranquil setting, whether having a dip or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere with a good book. With multiple sun loungers scattered around, guests can easily find the perfect location to sit, whether it’s in the sun or under an umbrella.

For the fitness-fanatics, the on-site fitness room boasts all the equipment needed to break a sweat; I recommend enjoying some morning yoga to start the day off before breakfast.

Alternatively, I would recommend taking part in some friendly competition with a game of Pétanque, a French sport with the objective of getting boules closest to a target. I’m happy to announce that I won most of our games!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive foodie, I was excited to try the local cuisine. Hôtel Crillon le Brave has two on-site restaurants offering local produce. Head chef Adrien Brunet has presented new menus with locally sourced delicacies, inviting guests on a gourmet journey through Provence. La Madeleine is a Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant that offers a spectacular experience on a panoramic terrace with must-see views. Expertly balancing textures and flavours, the team has created a gourmet menu with extraordinary dishes exquisitely presented.

The bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, has a relaxed atmosphere, and Adrien has created a classic menu inspired by the best of southern France. We were privileged to dine at the restaurant twice. On the first night, I enjoyed the tempura scampi for starter, with shiso and juice extract, before tucking it into the Ardèche trout with watercress ravioli and lemongrass broth. I finished off the meal with a soft and fluffy Fraisier cake, which melted in my mouth! On our second evening, I opted for the fish bouillabaisse with a delicious sauce and spring vegetables, followed by the lamb Wellington with chlorophyll, nut-brow buttered polenta, and bay leaf. What better way to finish the meal than with a lemon cheesecake finger adorned with gold flakes? Thanks to the attentive staff

and passionate chefs, the service was impeccable on both evenings. My favourite beverage of the trip was the La Douceur de Crillon, a must-try cocktail featuring white peach, apricot from Roussillon, homemade lavender syrup and prosecco – yum! After our meals, we spent time in the bar area, the oldest house in the hotel. Located on the ground floor of the Maison Roche, this gorgeous space provides a cosy setting to relax with a drink in hand, especially with the extensive wine menu! An equally wonderful setting to relax during the day with a game of chess, whilst taking a break from the sun.

THE FINAL VERDICT

After such a memorable experience, I cannot recommend Hôtel Crillon le Brave enough! It’s the ultimate setting for romantic honeymoons, with a rural location, spectacular views, delicious dishes, charming buildings and a tranquil setting. The magical trip will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we have many memories to treasure for years – we will definitely be returning!

The Port  House , Marina Keep , Port Solent PO6 4TH  has just finished a major refurbishment which has seen  the venue transformed into a beautiful waterside venue with contemporary furnishing and delicious bespoke Hampshire  food and produce , the on site caterers are vanilla catering and Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern, food styles, presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. On booking your wedding at the Port House you are appointed with a wedding planner who will advise on everything from timings to table plans. This is a complimentary service supplied to all couples There is a fully licensed bar on site which has been manufactured from reclaimed railway sleepers making it a wonderful focal point at  the venue. Parking is complimentary and plentiful.

The Port House is licensed for civil ceremonies and can be hired for exclusive use for your wedding day. In its flexible, purpose designed space, it is capable of accommodating small numbers for intimate private fine-dining through to weddings for 180 guests.
