It’s new year and that means either you’re another year closer or it’s finally the year of your big day… exciting! I just love the feeling that January brings. There are no January blues for me – I always feel excited at what’s to come in the year ahead. It’s a fresh start, a time to reflect and reset and kick the year off with the best will in the world to achieve everything I set out to achieve (usually carried over from the year before, and always involves winning the lottery – I can but dream!).

TEA PARTY WITH YOUR HENS
If you’re in the throes of planning your hen party and love a good brew you’re in luck because Bird & Blend Tea Co has just launched two new classes for 2023, that’d be perfect for your celebration – the Magic Potions Brewing Workshop and Cocktail Tea Mixology Masterclass. The Magic Potions Brewing Workshop invites guests to take an immersive step into conjuring up shimmering, colour changing and whimsical tea-infused potions – all whilst the smoke swirls, the smells take
over and the senses awaken.
The Cocktail Tea Mixology Masterclass will teach you and your guests how to have fun whilst making cocktail syrups, concentrates and garnishes, and offer the knowledge and skills to elevate your favourite drinks. All of this whilst enjoying tea and cocktail tasting!
Both events are taking place at the Islington and Portobello Road Bird & Blend Tea Co. locations and cost £45 per head.
SUSTAINABLE BRIDE
Indiebride London, one of the first sustainable bridalwear brands in London to offer handmade bohemian and romantic gowns has launched its new collection for 2023. As with each collection at Indiebride London, the dresses are inspired by the materials that are available to source at that moment in time, offering an authentic, alternative and honest approach to bridalwear. The gowns are designed to be worn with confidence at natural, rustic and bohemian-style celebrations. The collection introduces three new vegan materials, which are made of Tencel Lyocell, with the aim to replace the ivory silk and crinkled silk chiffon originally used to welcome vegan brides into the Indiebride world. While the wedding industry anticipates an increase of brides seeking vegan-friendly gowns, the collection is designed for everyone who seeks a wedding dress that offers a level of comfort that’s hard to find elsewhere, as well as a non-formal gown that remains stylish and fashion focused.
Located within an atmospheric church on Brixton Road, the Indiebride London studio awaits. Born in 2008, Indiebride London has developed over the years, transforming from a ready-to-wear brand before establishing itself as the go-to bridal studio for heirloom quality gowns with a sustainable edge.

HEART TO HEART
With Valentine’s Day around the corner, Pierre Marcolini has launched a new ‘Cœur à Cœur’ chocolate collection, which would be a delightful gift or favour for your guests. The collection makes opposing flavours confront each other and includes some surprising fruits and spices such as yuzu, tangerine and Madagascan vanilla with Timut pepper.
Hearts Unite would make a tasty favour. These chewy bites combine two halves of a heart. On the red side, the crunchy Piedmont hazelnut and Japanese charred sesame are accompanied by a Quimper lace topped with a hazelnut Gianotti. On the pink side, a tender hazelnut praline is sprinkled with hazelnut chips.
The Heart Box would be a beautiful bridal party gift. This metal box includes vanilla-pepper, hazelnut or Yuzu mandarin hearts, nougats, caramel palettes, or milk twists.
Both products and the rest of the new collect are available to buy in the Marylebone boutique, Harrods and Selfridges and via the online store www.marcolini.co.uk/en
HALFPENNY LONDON LAUNCHES ‘COURAGE’
Halfpenny London launches its new collection for 2023, Courage “Designing for 2023 made me think back to being 23 years old, so full of exuberance and bravery, at the very beginning of my career,” says Founder and Designer Kate Halfpenny. “Back then, I always had the courage to turn right when all signs pointed left. Thinking back, I may have been more naive than brave, but what a wonderful thing to be able to look back at my younger self. What message would I give her? There’s a lot that I could say, but mostly I’d encourage her to believe in herself. To be brave. To have courage.”
With this collection, Kate wishes to inspire courage in every woman. It’s a celebration of courageous acts, of rebellions against the status quo, and the conviction to forge one’s own path. “We’ve created a diverse, playful edit of bold silhouettes and thoughtfully constructed pieces and continued to push the boundaries of our fabrics in new and unexpected ways. The clever construction offers new styling opportunities for the big day and beyond,” says Kate.
Visit www.halfpennylondon.com to view the new collection and to find out more.

THE NED 020 3828 2000 | www.thened.com
Sitting in the heart of the City, surrounded by 17th-century spires and modern glass towers, this Grade I listed hotel has nine restaurants, 250 bedrooms, a range of grooming services and a member’s club. Set in the former Midland Bank building, The Ned was designed by Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens in 1924, whose style blended classical and modern elements.
The faded glamour of a 1930s transatlantic ocean liner was the starting point for the interiors, with designers also trawling through the bank’s archives to find out what the building looked like in its heyday.
Weddings at The Ned take place on the historic sixth floor. Its six rooms
and two outdoor terraces with incredible city vistas can host parties of up to 200 people. Couples can hire the whole floor exclusively for groups of 80 guests and more.
Most ceremonies take place in The Saloon, which is dominated by an 18th-century chandelier, an ornate chalk frieze and a restored parquet floor. Receptions are held in The Tapestry Room for large parties of up to 140 loved ones, while more intimate celebrations are suited to the RWB Room.
For weddings upwards of 50 guests, the venue offers free menu tastings and an overnight stay for the newlyweds. Some packages include free use of the Princes Dome on the roof for a delicious breakfast with guests the next day.

With panoramic views over the Gardens Through Time, the Atrium is bright and open, with a distinctive glass ceiling and red-brick walls. This is the largest indoor space, suited to groups of 100 guests for your ceremony and wedding breakfast and 150 for the evening celebrations. The Studio seats up to 80 for your nuptials, followed by post-ceremony drinks on the private terrace opening into the gardens and The Georgian
Suite is well suited to an intimate celebration of 40 guests with its doors open directly onto the Museum’s expansive lawns.
The Pavilion is a light, flexible and modern space that’s fully accessible from the Museum or the Gardens Through Time. The room includes built-in AV such as speakers and portable microphones, and there’s space for up to 60 guests.
At the heart of the Museum, you’ll find the original almshouse chapel that seats 40 for your ceremony. This is a beautiful, high-ceilinged space complete with wooden pews and pulpit. Choose from the Reading Lounge with a stunning wooden staircase and warm, lounge-like atmosphere, or exit the chapel directly onto the Kingsland Lawns for a post-ceremony drinks reception. Private access for your guests to the Museum’s galleries can be included in the hire of these spaces.
Outdoors, The Gardens Through Time, which display the evolution of private gardens throughout the centuries, offer stunning opportunities for your photos.

FIRST SIGHT
Emma and Dan met at a music festival in Clapham during one of the sets. “Dan saw me in the crowd and came over to talk to me – the attraction was immediate,” Emma recalls. “Not many people get to experience love at first sight, but we certainly did!”
Three happy years later during the November 2020 lockdown, Dan proposed. “It was very sweet because we’d planned on getting engaged but then when the country went into another lockdown, I thought it’d never happen,” says Emma. But Dan had other ideas. “He totally surprised me by
meeting with the jewellers on Zoom and ended up securing an engagement ring and proposing just weeks later!” she says. Dan popped the question at Clapham Common where they’d met three years earlier. “We’d gone for a morning stroll and all the bystanders starting clapping it was the sweetest thing ever. We then spent the day walking around London going back to all of our favourite city spots and reliving memories of our three years of dating,” she adds.
Their stunning day took place two years later and here, Emma shares all the details…

29 REAL WEDDINGS
We’re very active in our church community on Clapham Common, so it was a no brainer we’d get married at Holy Trinity Clapham. The Grade II listed building is gorgeous.
We wanted a reception venue within a few miles of church and one that was a blank canvas to create our dream and The Bedford in Balham achieved both.
My shoes were clear jewelled Louboutins. I felt absolutely amazing in them.
During the day I wore a Mori Lee A-line dress that was full lace, just like my mother’s wedding dress.
I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil that I borrowed from my unofficial second mum!
Dan wore a custom three-piece navy suit by Moss Bros. His groomsmen wore similar suits but Dan’s tie was a darker shade to make him stand out.
Dan and I did a ‘first look’ outside the church before walking down the aisle. It was a precious moment for just the two of us to see each other, tell each other how beautiful we looked, cry a little, and then go get married in front of all of our friends and family.
Our bridesmaids wore grey dresses with whatever jewellery they wanted to complement the look in their own individual styles.
30
Since our vicar married us, the church ceremony was my favourite part of the day. It was perfect.
I walked down the aisle to Lover by Taylor Swift being played by my good friends. I loved our scripture readings and the message delivered by our vicar – it definitely set the scene to just how much effort and planning went into creating our day.
Our day was a no-color color scheme. I wanted all white flowers with hints of green, grey and navy. It looked very romantic and whimsical.
We had a beautiful floral arch at the entrace to the church.
I loved the tarnished wood floors paired with our elegant white flowers – the whole vibe just worked so well and I was so pleased with how my vision came to life.
We ordered a lot of confetti, but it totally paid off because the photos and videography are some of our favourites!
We decorated the pew ends with foliage to tie in with our theme.
I went big with the flowers at the reception venue. We had huge centrepieces to glam the space up.
We transferred the floral pedestals from the church and they completely transformed the pub’s ballroom.
Our stationery, order of the day and table plan were all designed to complement our white and green theme and they all came together perfectly.
Our confetti shot as we left the church was an amazing moment.
31 REAL WEDDINGS
Our place cards doubled as guest favours. A local baker created name tag cookies. I’m a huge baker myself and this was a way to include one of my favourite hobbies. They were delicious and got all the guests talking the second they sat down and saw the delicious treats.
Our wedding planner, Ella, recommended a coloured water glass to add a pop of colour. They added so much to the entire room without taking away from our classic white theme.
We opted for a three-tiered buttercream cake decorated with eucalyptus. The flavours were vanilla, white chocolate and raspberry, and lemon elderflower.
Dan and I also love taking photos, so it seemed only right to have a selfie station with a flower wall backdrop and custom Mr & Mrs Young sign! We also had a photobooth! The guests loved it.
We ordered 500 glow sticks for our guests to light up the dancefloor. Everyone had such a fun time with them. We even had a glow stick limbo!
Our first dance was a slow rendition of Summer by Calvin Harris. It means a lot because we met in the summer at a DJ set. It was the highlight of the reception and we loved sharing that special moment.
We travelled to our reception in a London Routemaster bus. Everyone absolutely loved it –especially the photo opp at the back hanging off the pole! It was such a treat seeing everyone’s faces light up when they saw it.
EMMA AND DAN’S LITTLE WHITE BOOK
Our must-have songs were Levitating and Shake it Off! We coordinated that Shake it Off would come on when I switched out of my wedding gown into my party fringe mini dress to literally shake it off in!

Our friend from church is a professional musician and we hired his group, The Killer Groove. We wanted a party, so we went with the six-piece band and DJ combo to have more than four hours of entertainment.
Our friends and family signed a wooden guest book board for us to display as a memento of our day.

Meet me in the treehouse

and Priyam met at university when they were placed in the same study group. “Unfortunately, nobody wanted to partner with Priyam on a group project as he’d chosen the most difficult piece to cover so I was stuck with him and the rest is history,” says Bhavina. “I loved how determined and passionate he was, and he’s not too bad on the eye either!” she says.
A few years later, after six months of planning, going back and forth with a ring designer and deciding on a location, Priyam proposed. “We were planning a small getaway and Priyam suggested Treetop Hideaways. He tried his best to not seem interested in the trip to not raise my suspicions, as usually he’s terrible at keeping a surprise a secret,” Bhavina says. “His plan was to go out on a boat on the lake and to come back to the treehouse where he’d propose, however it started raining,” she explains. “I was feeling lazy that day and despite his best efforts to try to get me to go out to dinner I was adamant I wanted to have a Co-op meal deal, so we set off to get our sandwiches. When we drove back to the treehouse, I saw something set up on the balcony and he walked me over to the lake,” she recalls. “He’d hired Kyron, a steel pan player who I loved, to play Bollywood music and a photographer to capture the moment. When he asked me to marry him, I was so surprised and taken aback that all our photos are of me crying uncontrollably,” she says.
KING OF THE INDIAN ROADS
When it came to finding the perfect venue, the duo fell in love with Busbridge Lakes. “We’d seen a few indoor venues up to this point and there was something about having an outdoor ceremony that really resonated with us. As we walked around, we came to the large cedar wood tree with a small treehouse, which sealed the deal. It tied in with our proposal, it was so fitting,” says Bhavina.
Priyam chose to travel to the venue in a pink Ambassador – an Indian classic! “This went down really well with the kids and became a photo opportunity for our guests,” says Bhavina. “I’d planned Priyam’s entrance into the ceremony as a surprise. When he was brought in by our families, I hired a violinist to play movie scores like Austin Powers and Jurassic Park. It sounded epic in the venue because it was echoing around the grounds and the guests loved it. I also planned with the violinist to play his favourite song alongside my cousins playing the dhol for his aisle walk,” she says.
BESPOKE BRIDAL
“My family and I love arts and crafts, so we customised a lot of our outfits,” Bhavina says. “My dad had made a pact with me a long time ago that he would wear traditional village wear (a Kediyu) for my wedding and when it finally came to it, he really wanted to chicken out. I held him to it and in the months before the day, I spent many hours hand-embroidering his outfit. It was really special to see him in it and he went all out also making himself a cane and an earring,” she recalls. Along with her mum, Bhavina also made her veil with some material they bought from India. “I love traditional Kutchi mirror work so I embroidered the mirrors to the veil and mum added the borders. It turned out exactly as I’d hoped, and it was extra special working on it with my mum,” she says.
Bhavina wore an Anita Dongre half saree for the civil ceremony, a Debyani lehenga for the Mehndi, and an Anita Dongre lehenga for the wedding and reception and looked stunning throughout. “I’ve always loved Anita Dongre’s designs as her foundation works with rural women to develop livelihood opportunities by providing skill training. The workmanship’s outstanding, and I’ll cherish every piece,” says Bhavina.
For the civil ceremony Priyam’s outfit was by Shyamal and Bhumika, he wore Anita Dongre for the Mehndi, Jatin Malik for the wedding and a suit by Suit Supply for the reception. “I know that Priyam loves a bit of extravagance so for his garland we decided to use the biggest dahlias we’d grown that year from our garden,” says Bhavina. “My mum was worried he wouldn’t take it well having to carry them in, but he loved it and didn’t want to take it off!” she adds.
SETTING THE SCENE
Bhavina and Priyam’s Hindu ceremony took place under a mandap, and they chose a wooden frame to fit in with the background that was beautifully decorated with flowers and greenery to create the perfect focal point. “We placed this in

front of the cedar tree, and it created such a stunning backdrop,” says Bhavina. “For our mehndi our theme was ‘Kutch,’ a region of Gujarat that I’m from. As such, we chose floor seating decorated with traditional Kutchi printed fabric. In the villages in India you often see a tree with seating around where the community gets together and we wanted to bring that into our day, so we placed a tree at the centre of the Orangery,” she says.
Sai Mandaps did the decoration for the mehndi and wedding. “Our mehndi theme was niche, and they went above and beyond to find items to fit. Even on the day they added some extra touches like little puppets, so we really appreciated their effort.”
The meal on the wedding day was a traditional Gujarati Thali. “Usually, the wedding meal would be a buffet style however we decided on a sit-down meal where the food is served, which is no mean feat when there are 15 different components and 300 guests!” she says.
THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC
When it came to entertaining their guests, music played a huge part throughout each event. “We both love music so this was a big element for us. We had Kyron play at our engagement and wedding and we had so many compliments, I’m sure he will be at many more of our parties. My talented cousins from Rhythm n Bass played dhol. They created the most epic entrances and reception performance for us, everyone was up on the floor in seconds,” Bhavina says. They hired a band, Kay Kay & Co, to play alongside the female priest to create a special atmosphere at the ceremony. “They were also fantastic for the reception as they blended English and Bollywood music together so everyone of all ages enjoyed it,” she says. “For the mehndi we were surprised by Priyam’s family and our work friends who had spent the last few months putting together and learning a dance for us. They picked our favourite songs, and we couldn’t believe the hard work that’d gone into it – it’s something we’ll never forget.”
The family has a charity named Husti, which was set up in 2014, to help disadvantaged children with complex societal issues. “To help empower the young girls we purchased bracelets and necklaces made as part of the charity’s art classes to give as gifts for the mehndi,” Bhavina says.
For the reception Bhavina and her cousins surprised their guests by performing a dance number. “We used to perform together as children and it was so nostalgic putting it together,” she says. “There was also a point at our reception where the band came into the crowd for audience participation. The mic came around to me and by some miracle it wasn’t just my favourite song but one that I knew all the lyrics to. I somehow ended up on stage singing, badly might I add, and super out of character for me, but it’s something that everyone now brings up to me when they see me.”
CHERISHED MEMORIES
Priyam’s dad wrote a heart-warming speech for the evening celebration that had everyone laughing and in tears. “We also had a surprise speech from Priyam’s aunt, who’d travelled over from Australia, and we were so touched that she’d put together something so beautifully composed for us,” Bhavina says. “There are so many cherished memories from the day. We have a tradition where the bride’s family steal the groom’s shoes from him and demand money or presents before they return them,” she explains. “Usually there’s a little playful back and forth but for us both sides took it very seriously,” she says. Priyam came in with croc sandals and my cousins stole them just before he entered the mandap. His best men started a chase to get them back and it ended up in a little scrum at the back of the venue with my poor cousin hugging his sandal at the bottom of the pile. Luckily it was caught on video and every time we watch it, we can’t help but laugh.”
After a year in the making, their celebration came together perfectly. “Our families and planners worked so hard. It felt really special being surrounded by our favourite people and those who’d travelled far and wide to celebrate with us,” says Bhavina. “It’s not often you get to see everyone you love in one place, and this was one of those events. We’re so thankful people took the time to celebrate with us.”

SECOND
time lucky
Iona and Chris’ day oozed City chic Images courtesy of Clara Cooper Photography
Believe
it or not, Iona and Chris’ first date didn’t quite go to plan, but fate played its course and brought them back together. “We met on the dating app Tinder and arranged our first date in a bar in Shoreditch,” says Iona. “We couldn’t hear a word either of us said, so we decided to go to a restaurant and asked all the same questions again. It just didn’t seem to click, so unfortunately, we went our separate ways,” she says. Two months later, that all changed. “I got a drunken text from Chris at 3am and we agreed to meet in Canary Wharf for a second date,” she says. “It was fun, and exciting and we got on like a house on fire! This time around things felt different. We’d both got new jobs, which we loved, and the timing was perfect. We ended up spending the weekend together and the rest is history!”
Chris proposed to Iona on the highest peak in Europe. “I knew he was going to pop the question on holiday, but the day itself was incredible. Chris took me to a viewing glass gallery at the summit of Mont Blanc and got down on one knee. I’d love to say it was just as romantic as it sounds, but we had a strange local man watching the whole thing from a few feet away which was a little awkward!” she says. “It was Chris’ first skiing holiday, and the resort was somewhere I’d been to a few times when I was a teenager, so it meant a lot that he’d planned it there. He’d even asked permission from my father beforehand. It was simply magical!”
The duo had a journey ahead of them to get to their big day. They’d hoped to wed in Tuscany, then decided on Scotland but due to Covid, plans were changed, dates postponed and some desposits unfortunately lost. They then started the planning from scratch and decided to get married in London, as this was where they met and fell in love.
Iona tells us more…
41 REAL WEDDINGS
When we went to view The Old Marylebone Town Hall, we fell in love with it. We also discovered that my grandparents got married there in 1946, so we knew it was meant to be!
In terms of style, I really wanted to go for city/chic, so selecting Ham Yard Hotel and Haymarket Hotel for the drinks reception and dinner was the absolute dream combination.
My wedding dress was by Suzanne Neville and I accessorised with a Jesus Pedro cape to add that bit of extra flair.
My gorgeous shoes were from Dune.
I wanted a second outfit to change into – an evening look to dance in so I opted for a Ronald Joyce jumpsuit. It still felt very bridal as it had a train so it was perfect.
42
Chris wore a navy Hawes & Curtis two-piece suit with fine zigzag styling and accessorised with a bright orange Hermes tie that was borrowed from my father. His groomsmen wore matching suits but with navy ties.
Our bridesmaid looked gorgeous in a navy Twobirds dress.
My Mum is a huge fan of the Haymarket Hotel designer, Kit Kemp. The style’s stunning and it was the perfect backdrop to our day. Our pink peony centrepieces added a colour pop to our tables.
Our three-tier cake was decorated with a beautiful flower design and framed by floral displays. It looked and tasted beautiful.
Our table numbers were a subtle design on clear Perspex with black writing.
I opted for a classic white hand-held bouquet.
The seating plan was printed on a white board with flower detailing and placed on a frosted acrylic stand.
Our place names were tied to the contemporarydesigned menus with pink ribbon to complement the centrepieces.
43 REAL WEDDINGS
For our entertainment, we had a harpist at the ceremony and a folk duo at the reception.
We felt completely loved. We had 58 guests and that made it intimate and personal to us. Our registrar also said he really could feel the love from everyone in the room, which was lovely.
A soul duo performed at the dinner and for our first dance, which was perfect.
Chris said that one of the best moments for him was the first time he laid eyes on his bride at the ceremony, which was really sweet.
On the wedding morning, our cars couldn’t get to us due to a huge protest on the street outside, so I lifted up my dress and strode out onto the gridlocked streets of London to grab a black cab. It felt like a movie.
The speeches were incredible - both funny and emotional. The food was spectacular and our guests were so kind and happy for us.

Having an engagement shoot is a great idea as it helps you to get to know your photographer before the big day and also helps you to get used to feeling comfortable in front of the camera
Photographers and many suppliers are booked up well in advance, so make sure this is one of the first things you book when you start your planning
If you have a big wedding party, your photographer might suggest bringing a second shooter. This is an extra cost but it’s worth it, as it helps to get through the group shots quicker and you’ll also get different angles of the day infolding
DAVID LEGGE, DAVID CHRISTOPHER PHOTOGRAPHY
www.davidchristopher-photography.co.uk
Select a photographer who resonates with the vibe of your day, for instance if you’d like beautiful portraits, pick someone who loves capturing couples in this way Make sure you request to see a range of full galleries (rather than blogged weddings, which tend to just be the highlights from the day), so you can see exactly what the photographer will deliver. From this you’ll be able to tell how each part of the day is documented and how many images you’d expect Always have a video or in-person consultation to make sure you get on well with the photographer as you’ll spend most of your day together
From the hair and make-up to the décor, pick your dream team of professional and reliable suppliers who’ll look after you no matter what, as all of this will be reflected in the photos
Your dress plays a big part in your photos! Making sure it’s a good fit means you’ll feel comfortable and confident and that’ll show in your photos A good photographer should be able to work in any kind of lighting and bring the right equipment with them to capture your day in the best possible way
Look through the photographer’s reviews online, see if there’s continuity in feedback from previous clients and decide whether these are the things you’re looking for from your pro
I always love to recommend confetti shots to my clients. Walking through the confetti shower will make you feel very special, it’s fun for everybody and it’ll look great in your photos
If you’re planning group photos, prepare a list of which guests will be in each and put someone in a charge of that so you don’t have to worry about getting them together
Cake cutting is one of my favourite parts to photograph. Adding your names to the cake knife will provide a beautiful keepsake to cherish
If you’re wearing a veil, be sure to have some fun photos underneath it –your photographer will have some great ideas for this

PLANNING SOS 47
LUCY BERTIE, GEE BROTHERS LONDON
www.geebrothers.co.uk
Send your invites out six weeks to two months before the date of the wedding. You might want to allow longer if your date is during peak times of the year
When working out how many invitations you need, always consider couples and families – you won’t want the same number of invites as the number of guests you’re inviting
Always budget for 10 to 20 extra invites when you order. This’ll mean you’ll have some spare in case of any mistakes, lost invitations, or if you decide to send a second wave out. In printing, smaller, second runs are usually more expensive per invitation and take the same amount of time to print
Check with your printer and order your invites allowing enough time for the design and printing process, but also time for you to write and post them too
Information sheets included with your invites are useful to fit lots of extra details such as timings, addresses, locations, and dress code. This’ll help keep the invitations clear of all but the important stuff for a beautiful design
A large, folded invitation with a raised script font, often printed with thermography or engraving, is the most traditional option for invitations, with an accompanying reply card. For a more modern twist, you could opt for a coloured ink, and matching tissue lining or incorporate a motif or monogram in your design
For a luxurious design, foiling, letterpressing and edging can make your invitation stand out. Metallic or coloured foil can sit on top of a coloured card, for a bright and eye-catching design, whilst letterpressing is more understated, but creates a lovely textured indentation. Coloured or foil edging adds a striking finishing touch
If you’re considering a floral design, digital or four-colour printing allows for a bright finish. This works beautifully with hand-drawn or painted designs, particularly using watercolour. For best results, make sure your design or image is provided as a high-quality file
One of our top tips for the reception or day-after party invitation is to create a design that’s bold and playful. For example, why not flip your wedding colours on their head? Choosing a card colour that’s similar to your invitation ink colour and opting for foiled text in white or gold can create a real contrast, whilst still keeping the same colour combinations, or you could go for something entirely the opposite
TRANSPORT
Work out how large your wedding party is to establish what type of transport you’ll need and how many vehicles
Many London venues have good transport links. It’s a good idea to include the nearest tube stations or even consider putting on a coach to help your guests get to your venue
Think about your bridal party when it comes to travelling from the ceremony to the reception – it’s nice for you to all arrive at the same time
A current trend is for the newlyweds to travel with their guests via a vintage bus or similar. This starts the celebrations early and helps with timings as everyone gets there together
Good transport suppliers will check out routes before they collect you to make sure they avoid any roadworks or traffic delays Consider your dress when it comes to choosing your transport – a two-seater sports car might not be the best option if you’re going all out with a ball-gown design
If you want to surprise your partner on the wedding morning, you could hire their favourite car to pick them up for the ride to the ceremony

BRIDAL GOWN
DANILA CALCINAGHI, LE SPOSE DI GIO
www.lesposedigio.com/en
Be sure to make an appointment with your bridal boutique so you have the time allocated to you for help and advice from the boutique’s advisors We suggest that you order your dress at least five months before your big day. However, if your wedding is taking place during the summer or spring you might even need to order sooner. Be sure to speak to your boutique to get the timeframes right based on your date
Our gowns are tailor-made, exclusively in Italy. At your appointment, you’ll try on sample dresses to visualise the finished look. Your gown is then custom-made and can be personalised in terms of choice of the
fabric, colour and style – this is why it’s good to allow plenty of time
Don’t worry if you live a distance from a boutique. We offer a special forwarding service where your gown will be delivered hanged and ironed
Don’t take too many people with you to your bridal appointment. Too many opinions creates confusion and this doesn’t help. It’s better to come with a couple of trustworthy people and invite the others during the fitting where they’ll be able to give you some suggestions on all those details such as the veil, hair, shoes and make-up
It’s important to have an idea of budget and what style of dress you have in mind – formal, classic, contemporary. Be sure to be openminded when it comes to trying on different styles though – you might be surprised!
FLOWERS
Book an initial consultation with your florist to make sure they understand your vision and to check out their portfolio. A good florist will know flowers, their availability, season and vase life so keep an eye out for that Create a mood board and show your florist photos of looks that you like and any other big-day details so they can make sure the blooms complement your day Save the date with your florist as early as you can to avoid disappointment. A good supplier will be booked well in advance Take inspiration from your venue for setting the scene and bringing the outdoor in
Recommended supplier lists that your venue has will be useful as they’ll be used to decorating the rooms and making best use of the different spaces Reuse your flowers throughout the day to save on costs. Ceremony displays can be transported to your reception venue and used as centrepieces or a backdrop for your top table or cake table Be clear on budget – your florist will work with you to get the most out of your flowers based on what you’ve got to spend
If you have small bridesmaids or flower girls, consider easyto-carry displays that won’t damage esily such as wands, wrist corsages or flower-filled baskets When you think flowers, don’t just think bouquets. Your floral theme can be taken throughout your bridal look, venue styling, cake design and more!

Entrance – Floral arches are the go to option, but if you want to scale down the costs, opt for an all-green display using a variety of deep green and variegated seeded Ivy, Pittosporum, Magnolia, Laurel and Pine or Fir leaves and branches. You can also use urns and milk churns to create large arrangements at the door
Aisle displays – Consider if the aisle is large enough for two people to walk abreast without brushing against the sides and knocking pew ends to the ground. Make sure the displays add to the overall ambiance rather than cluttering the space
Alter displays – Historically, church flowers used to be white but over the years, this has changed to accommodate seasonal and personal favourites. Mixing fresh with artificial to create certain combinations out of season is desirable. Floral displays should ideally maintain synergy with the architecture of the building. Colours may vary but they should not clash with the colour scheme or aesthetics of your backdrop
Create the ultimate backdrop with these gorgeous ideas
www.amandaaustinflowers.co.uk
Flowers that are used for your aisle chairs and alter backdrop can be moved into the reception area and reused to save a bit of budget, as long as you’re having a drinks reception in between
I love ceiling displays but if you do want to do this, remember that it’s very expensive to rig something up above, and take it down after
Is your dress big? Don’t have anything framing the aisle that you or your guests could trip over
Lanterns look beautiful but double check with your ceremony venue if you’re allowed to place real candles in them

Centrepieces – Remember that people like to see across the table, so don’t make them too tall and if they are, be sure to make the plinths clear or above eye level. If you’re on a smaller budget put all floral displays on the table as everyone will see these flowers for the longest time
Stationery and signage – Silver pokes don’t look the best, so get creative with your table signage
Cake table – If your cake is gorgeous put it out on show
Sweet stand – Hide this until after dinner or it’ll all be eaten before everyone sits down and then they won’t eat the wedding breakfast
Instead of a treat table, why not go veggie with a veggie stand?
REBECCA PAULRAJ, BECCA BLOOMS

Most wedding venues have large airy rooms that can accommodate colourful and elegant pedestal displays in keeping with the theme or style of décor
Your choice of tableware for the reception will govern the choice of what floral displays go on the tables or sit above the tables (in cloud displays and floral candelabras)
Table linen, chair covers, and chair backs should also combine with the other décor to create one seamless picture
Don’t be scared to go without tablecloths. The natural sheen of wood is beautiful, and you can pick up the natural tones of the table by adding bits of twigs and seed pods in the table décor
Cake tables should be decorated with unscented or silk flowers. Match the colours of the cake or go for a totally contrasting pallet that still fits in with the other venue styling

After nightfall, light up dark corners of your reception room with lanterns and lots of romantic candlelight

REBECCA PAULRAJ, BECCA BLOOMS https://beccablooms.com
Interspersing long candles or tea lights in suitable holders among the flowers, strings of pearls, feathers and artificial gems are all effective ways of enhancing the overall backdrop to the ceremony or reception
Take the time to decide on the colour, size and type of candles and candle holders as they all need to thread together to create a seamless backdrop
Keep away from scented candles as the scent can interfere with guests enjoying their meal and some people are prone to headaches when exposed to strong smelling candles
Fireplaces are amazing features to decorate with long swags of greenery or twigs and vines dotted with flowers. Add candles for that sense of romance in the evening. The lit candles will make the mantlepiece swag pop when the lights are turned down
54
RECEPTION AND TABLESCAPE
2023 STYLING TRENDS
Another popular design trend is the use of water and flame within tablescapes. Floating candles, tealights and glassware filled with water and flowers
Your cake is very much part of your venue styling and simple cakes with added colour and texture are here to stay. Co-ordinating bright blooms, stencilling and gold leaf are all popular. For texture, there’s a growing demand for free-hand textured designs and naked and semi-naked bakes decorated with fresh berries or flowers continue to look fabulous
Translucent stationery and signage are set to be a trend this year, paired with bright, jewellike tones and textural natural elements such as torn paper edges and hessian or velvet ribbons A flower that’s growing in popularity for 2023 is lavendar. It has a similar feel to gypsophila with small blossoms but with a more interesting, on-trend coloir and the added bonus of the amazing scent
The overarching theme for this year is colour! Popular palettes include terracotta, copper, rust and burnt orange tones popping up everywhere from floral arrangements and stationery through to the wedding party outfits and venue styling Wedding guest lists are getting smaller, which means floral displays, top table backdrops, archways and aisle and alter displays are getting larger due to more budget being spent on styling

Couples are opting for more sustainable items such as locally sourced, seasonal flowers and foliages
Calling all animal lovers
We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day
If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.
WHAT TO CONSIDER
Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.
If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!
GROOMER HAS IT
As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.
If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.
THE PERFECT SETTING
The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.
Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.
56
PET SITTER
Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.
If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!
BON A-PET-TREAT
One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.
If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.
BE PREPARED
Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day.
You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.
SPECIAL ROLE
Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.
For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

When it comes to choosing a setting for your big day, you don’t have to opt for a picturesque countryside venue, a big day in the city can be just as stunning. And London, with its changing landscapes, iconic landmarks and interesting architecture creates an awesome backdrop.
When Kristen Morris, owner of Kristen Kate Photography, first got into London wedding photography, she was desperate to shoot the city in all its glory to build up her portfolio, but there weren’t many workshops around to help her to do that. She therefore took on the challenge of arranging her very own first shoot, thoroughly enjoyed it and since then, has gone from strength to strength. “I’ve put together quite a few shoots now and this workshop’s an example of one of my favourites. I wanted to be able to give other photographers the same experience that I had when I first started taking London wedding bookings, to help them to build their portfolios,” says Kristen.
“When I started to think about the design, I knew that I wanted the colours to pop and to create something that real brides could still relate to and could implement within their own day,” explains Kristen. “This led me to the red, pink and cream colour scheme accented throughout the flowers, shoes and make-up with additional hints threaded all the way through to the embroidered jacket,” she says. “Another huge part of the theme was creating something fun and classy but that could be adaptable to the ever-changing landscape of the Chelsea area. From the bustling main Kings Road through to Albert Bridge, I wanted the look to suit wherever we went.”
It was super-important to Kristen to have a couple that was racially inclusive. “I see so many styled shoots that feature white models with blonde hair. Whilst these are lovely and representative to that group itself, I wanted to show a bit more of the diversity of London,” she says.

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA
Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it. One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com
GRACE LOVES LACE
Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”
Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”
The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.” https://graceloveslace.co.uk

VERA WANG BRIDE
Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.
Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.
Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”
In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32).

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.
Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com
ANDREA HAWKES
British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”
Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come. www.andreahawkes.co.uk

THE hair NECESSITIES
Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord
Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.
Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.
What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look?
Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.
Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist
should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.
What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!
What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.
Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.
Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR
Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists
Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!
The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.
Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.
READ FOOD LABELS
To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or
switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).
WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK
Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.
CURB THE CRAVINGS
No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!
IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE
A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.
HEALTHY SUGARS
Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such
as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.
FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND
Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.
A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP
All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.
Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

Q&A Beauty
Look the best version of you with our expert advice
FLAWLESS FINISH
SUBTLE BEAUTY
Q – I don’t usually wear much make-up so don’t know where to start for my big day. I’d love to have it done by a pro but don’t want to look over the top – help! Lots of brides have these feelings, so you’re not alone. Let’s face it, we don’t hire make-up artists every day, so naturally people worry it’s going to be overly done. Make-up can be overwhelming. There are so many products and brands it’s difficult to know where to start, which is where I can help. For 18 years I’ve tested and used the best products in the profession and have them all in my kit, ready to go.
I specialise in natural, blended make-up that’s tailored to your comfort level, subtly bringing out your features to flatter your bone structure, age and skin – while still looking like you.
I’d always advise to have a trial session with your make-up artist to test out various looks and products based on the information you give. It also builds your confidence and trust, so you’ll feel more relaxed on the day, knowing you’re in safe professional hands.
When booking with me, I have a short questionnaire on my website that I ask brides-to-be to complete giving as much information as they can. I then call to get to know you a bit better, answer any questions you might have, and we take it from there.
Q
– My skin’s not in the best condition right now and I have quite a lot of fine facial hair. How can I prep my skin to give me the best base for my make-up and the perfect bridal glow?
Dermaplaning is a popular treatment among brides who want to achieve a radiant, glowing complexion. This involves gently removing dead skin cells and fine facial hair from the surface of the skin; improving the texture and appearance of the skin, making it smoother, brighter, and more radiant. Many of my clients come to me after being recommended dermaplaning by their make-up artists. This is because the treatment can help accentuate facial features and allow make-up to glide on effortlessly for a flawless finish that lasts all night.
In addition to providing immediate results, dermaplaning can also improve the effectiveness of skincare products by removing the barrier of dead skin cells. This allows the products to better penetrate the skin and improve its overall health and appearance. I always recommend trying the treatment a few months before the wedding to ensure that you and your skin love it.
Dermaplaning is a gentle and non-invasive treatment that’s suitable for all skin types. It doesn’t involve the use of harsh products, and there’s no downtime or recovery period. The final treatment before the big day should ideally be performed three to seven days beforehand to ensure that your skin’s at its best on the day itself.

DANCING QUEEN
Q – I’ve decided on a second dress for the evening so I can dance the night away. How can I transform my hair and make-up into a party look?
www.cdouglasphoto.com https://michaelwharley.com
I offer an all-day and evening bridal service for this very thing! Following your initial bridal hair and make-up session on the wedding morning, I’ll be on hand for the rest of the day, discreetly wiping your tears, fixing your veil, and topping up your lipstick. If you’ve got a second outfit for the evening, I’ll then transform you into a brand-new look, restyling your hair and make-up to really wow your guests. With this service, you’ll look immaculate walking down the aisle, through the emotional speeches and all the way through to dancing the night away. This service suits brides who want to be fully immersed in their day, safe in the knowledge that their make-up expert is waiting in the wings, on hand to help.
Even if your hair and make-up artist doesn’t offer this service, be sure to talk to them about your daytime and evening outfits. They’ll be able to advise on the best look to suit your ceremony and reception, that’s easy enough for you (or your bridal party!) to re-style for your evening party.

HOT TOPIC
HAIR AND MAKE-UP
I’m planning on doing my own bridal hair and make-up, but I’m not great at it. Do you have any tips that could help me?
Having a lesson beforehand is a great way to build confidence. I love running these sessions with my brides. We’ll work together to come up with a look that’s manageable for you and will last all day. We’ll look through your hair and make-up bag to get the best results with the products you already have, and I can also suggest some of my favourite tried and tested products too.
As well as giving you tips for achieving your desired look on the day,
STATIONERY
We have a large guest list and I’m worrying about last-minute changes and printing costs. Do you have any suggestions on how we can get around this?
You’re quite right, a large guest list means more printing and therefore more room for errors in misspelt names and last-minute changes causing you a headache. We’ve come up with a solution for this very issue!
We’ve just launched an attractive QR code acrylic block product that can be created to act as table numbers, as well as having your names
the prep in the run-up to your day is just as important. I’ll also provide you with a personalised beauty routine to help your skin and hair to be at its absolute best and share my expert tips and tricks to leave you feeling confident in creating a beautiful bridal look.
If you’re just feeling in a rut and would like to improve your skills my personalised classes can help with this too. I’ll show you how you can use hair and make-up to flatter and enhance your natural features. Kat Sykes | Kat Sykes Hair and Make-up Artist | www.katsykeshairandmakeup.co.uk
and the date and time of your nuptials included. The addition of a QR code means that guests can simply scan it to find out everything from where they’re sitting, to the menu and timings of the day.
Not only does this mean you don’t need to spend on printing, they’re also extremely practical for those last-minute changes. Instead of needing to re-print, you can just make the change online and it’ll show immediately when the QR code is scanned.

How can couples create the day of their dreams without breaking the bank?

PHOTOGRAPHY
Finding a fab photographer is so important to us and with that comes a cost. Do you have any advice on getting the best for our buck?
Your big-day photos capture the memories that you’ll cherish for years to come so it’s important that you find the right pro – if there’s one element of your budget not to cut – it’s this one! You want to make sure that you get the best for your money and here’s our advice on the best way to do that:
Be cautious if a photographer offers you something at half the price of others on the market. You want to pay the right price but for a quality service
Do your research – check reviews and portfolios to make sure that you’re happy with what other couples are saying about the photographer and that you like their style
Check your package – how many images will you receive after the day, are they print or digital, how soon after the day will you receive them. Also, be aware of cheap base packages where any additional items such as extra hours or a second photographer, are an added cost
Be clear on timings so you can book a package that covers the parts of the day that you want capturing on camera, rather than needing to book a full day’s coverage if you don’t need it
Think about different days of the week or months that aren’t during peak season for a more affordable package

CAKE
We’re absolute foodies so we want our cake to be a showstopper but wondered if there’s any way that we can cut down on the cost?
There absolutely is and you don’t need to sacrifice on design. If you’re after wow factor, consider having a smaller centrepiece and going all out on style, perhaps with some sleek metal or transparent separators to give you more glam, tiers and height without adding more actual cake. For bigger weddings, you could include nondisplay, undecorated sheet cakes behind the scenes that can be cut and served to guests. Nondisplay sheet cakes can help you bring down the price, as there’s a bit less time and skill involved in decorating them.
You could also consider having a treat table instead of a dessert course after your main meal. You could opt for a selection of mini cakes, doughnuts, macarons and goodies to suit all dietary requirements, all designed along a similar theme and displayed in a fabulous way to create that amazing focal point in your venue.
All quality cake suppliers will have a good sense of what we can provide for a specific budget, so my biggest piece of advice is to be upfront when you speak to them. Let them know at your first appointment how much you have to spend, and they’ll advise on the best realistic options for you.

BRIDAL GOWN
I’d love the dream designer dress, but the price tag will be out of my league right now. Are there any options that would make me feel a million dollars, but at a more affordable price?
The short answer here is yes! We stock dresses for all budgets, but what’s important to remember is to make sure you let your bridal boutique know what your budget is. They’ll then help you to find the most amazing dress for your budget and trust me, regardless of the price tag, you’ll feel beautiful in it.
At The Wedding Wardrobe, we offer a service called Something Borrowed, where you can hire designer dresses for a fraction of the buying price. These gowns are perfect for those on a tighter budget. The dresses range from timeless classic designs to glamorous gowns, ensuring every budget and style is catered for.
The hire service is straight forward and stress-free. We take care of dry cleaning, and you can forget about long waiting times, because with Something Borrowed, you can pick up your bridal dress rental in as little as a week from your order date.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
OF THE BAY On the dock
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.
My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.
HEAVENLY ROOMS
After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.
The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.
KICK BACK AND RELAX
As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.
The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.
GET ACTIVE
For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.
FOOD AND DRINK
The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.
During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.
If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.
EXPLORE
The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).
There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

Ikos Resorts has announced the seventh addition to its award-winning all-inclusive portfolio with the opening of Ikos Porto Petro on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
The five-star resort offers a luxury all-inclusive experience and has 319 elegantly-designed rooms and suites with terraces, private pools, and incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea. Guests will be spoilt for choice with five indoor and outdoor heated pools, including separate areas for children, as well as secluded coves to explore and a stunning natural backdrop.
Visit www.ikosresorts.com/resorts/ikos-porto-petro for more info.
As part of a guided tour, couples can now venture down into a disused mine to experience a sauna in the heart of Dalarna, Sweden. The Adventure Mine in Borlänge has long been renowned for its guided tours, where visitors can go deep underground to the vast rock chambers and see the turquoise Aurora Lakes, whose waters resemble the colours of the spectacular Northern Lights.
Couples can bathe in the mine’s crystal clear water and experience The Lady of the Mine Sauna Ritual which was designed as a tribute to the being who, according to legend, is keeping watch over the mine.

HONEYMOONS 95
THE RIVERDown by
This sanctuary nestled in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Thames is ideal for honeymooners, and their four-legged friends and children are also welcome for those wanting to book a family-moon. The tranquil, back-to-nature bolthole, a former Elizabethan coaching inn has some famous neighbours – Hollywood movie star George Clooney and wife Amal live in this quaint village tucked away in the Berkshire countryside.
DO NOT DISTURB
There are 49 individually designed rooms and suites with The Coach House Apartment located in the courtyard being the hotel’s best offering for newlyweds which became my home-from-home for the night. It’s a quirky split-level suite with a separate TV room that doubles up as a second bedroom, perfect if it is a family-moon you’re after. A highlight for me was the large roll-top bath – I dived straight in!
A FOODIE HEAVEN
At the heart of this boutique hotel is the swish Coppa Club clubhouse. The brand is well-known for providing the very best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge all combined into one setting with a private members club feel, without the fee. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night nibbles with riverside views in the restaurant, bar and snug area decorated with contemporary comforts and vibrant pops of colour.
Those passionate about food will love the extensive menus including the all-day, weekend and non-gluten offerings plus grills, grazing plates and sourdough pizzas - a takeaway menu is also offered. Being practically vegan, I tucked into the mouth-watering Coppa burger made with a delicious plant-based patty and cheese served with skinny fries. Other highlights on the menu were the chalkstream trout and the 10oz rib British steak on the bone. The buckwheat and rye pancakes were the perfect way to start my day the following morning at breakfast.
WHAT’S NEW?
The latest addition are the cosy igloos perched outside the large impressive glass-covered terrace lining the garden leading to the river. The best seat in the house, they provide private dining all year round for up to eight people and there are even blankets provided for the chilly evenings.
MADE FOR ROMANCE
Memories can be made at this idyllic, award-winning wedding venue that’s licensed for up to 100 guests for the ceremony. The Coppa Club chefs have created a collection of wedding breakfast menus and the flexible event space can host up to 200 guests for the evening party. The wedding couple can arrive by boat and will receive a complimentary night in the River Suite, plus a unique code for their guests to book inline.
