Do you know what I’ve enjoyed most about this issue? Looking at our reader weddings! I always love a good ‘how we got together and how my partner proposed’ story, but in fact it was seeing my couples crease up during their celebrations that really put a smile on my face. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but my word it’s true. Looks fade, but laughter is everlasting, so nothing’s more satisfying than seeing two people who truly love each other have a good old snigger at what could well be the silliest of things; something that no one else will truly get but them.

With this in mind let me turn your attention to the three amazing reader weddings we have in store. Over on page 27 meet Anna and Matt, who were friends for years before finally realising they were meant to be together. Trust me, you’ll want to read all about their big day – Mr Blobby and ABBA both rocked up!

Next, say hello to Robyn and Lauren, over on page 32. We’ve never heard of a bottle of Lucozade being thrown over someone as a way of flirting, but it must have worked, with the couple saying, ‘We do!’ at The Willows at the Woodmans. Finally, turn to page 39 to read all about Sarah and Andrew’s Langley Castle celebrations. Sarah’s dress really does have the ‘wow’ factor and is proof you don’t have to be decked out in white for your big day.

All that plus the best North East cake-makers (p45), unbelievable gowns (p67), honeymoon hotspots (p87) and more!

PAWS FOR THOUGHT

Want your fur baby at your wedding? Hexham’s Langley Castle Hotel have released a helpful guide to include your faithful friend in your big day…

1 Walk with them down the aisle

Why not choose to have your furry companion accompany you to the altar? They could be your ring-bearer and precede the exchange of the all-important vows!

2 Arrange photo opps

Wedding albums are a possession you’ll cherish forever, so make sure your pet doesn’t miss out on a photo shoot with you and your spouse! Just notify your photographer beforehand, so they can come up with creative ideas from the outset.

3 Have them join your ‘first dance’

If you need an extra dancer to join your choreography, you may want to consider including your pet! If they are playful by nature, they will enjoy a boogie with their newlywed parents! Just practice beforehand, browsing through YouTube in the lead-up to find the inspiration you need.

For more information on how you can incorporate your pet at your Langley Castle wedding contact the venue at www.langleycastle.co.uk

BUDDY UP

We might be wrong here at Your North East Wedding HQ, but we don’t think older relatives are going to be thrilled at the prospect of a Newcastle bar crawl for your hen or stag. Step forward Darlington Hippodrome, who’ve just announced that The Buddy Holly Story is back in the UK, with tickets available from Tuesday 28th February to Saturday 4th March.

Buddy tells the story of the musical icon’s rise from his Southern rockabilly beginnings to international stardom, before his tragic death at the age of just 22.

In 18 short months the bespectacled boy from Texas revolutionised the face of contemporary music, and would influence everyone from The Beatles to The Rolling Stones.

Since its inception, Buddy has inspired a generation of multi-million selling jukebox musicals including Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You, yet remains a musical phenomenon. Seen by more than 22 million theatregoers since it opened in London’s West End in 1989, it continues to have audiences rocking in the aisles across the globe!

LET’S PARTY!

Engaged and ready to celebrate with your nearest and dearest? Head to Stanley’s South Causey Inn and take advantage of their recently released Engagement Party package.

“The beauty of our engagement package is that it can be as laidback or as formal as you like,” says the venue’s Harriet Moiser. “We’re happy to discuss any of your personal requirements to build a bespoke celebration perfect for you, however, for £1,995 you can enjoy private hire of one of our spaces, table centrepieces, table runners, candles and tea-lights, a delicious evening buffet, giant LOVE letters, and our resident DJ for the evening, based on a party of 80 guests. You can even add extra friends and family for £20 per person.”

Available any Friday, Saturday or Sunday in January, February or March, 2023, visit www.southcausey.co.uk or email events@ southcausey.co.uk.

DRINKING GAMES

Last year was a busy one for Nickynoo Quirky Mobile Bars, however, it definitely paid off, with them scooping Mobile Bar Rental Company of the Year 2022/23 by the North of England Prestige Awards.

The business, who offer a high quality mobile drinks service for weddings in Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland and Northumberland, are set to expand further still. “We’ve recently purchased our first mobile bar trailer, the Wandering Barrel, which we’re refurbishing for next year’s wedding season,” says owner Nicola Robson. “The trailer is an impressive 20 feet in length, which will allow us to cater for much larger scale events. Be sure to watch this space!” Visit www.nickynoo.co.uk for more information.

SHE’S A WINNER!

We’re pleased to reveal that make-up artist Lyndsey Morgan was recently announced Make Up Artist of the Year 2022 at the North East Beauty Awards. “Held late last year, it was stiff competition, with seven others in the category,” says Lyndsey. “After sending in supporting evidence, ranging from client reviews, pictures and videos, it was a case of crossing my fingers! When the night came around, I was a bag of nerves – and to hear my name called as the winner meant I almost fell of my chair, much to the delight of my friend, who was videoing my reaction! I’m over the moon, and feel humbled and grateful to all who nominated me. It makes all the 5am starts to wedding venues more than worth it!”

WONDERLAND Winter

Want to wed in the colder months? Here are five magical venues to consider

WYNYARD HALL

01740 644811 | www.wynyardhall.co.uk

Beyond the beauty of exclusive wedding venue Wynyard Hall lies a fascinating history, enriched by a huge cast of characters, who all played their part in its remarkable story. For generations, thanks to the considerable social and political influence of the Londonderry family and their circle of friends, Wynyard performed an important role on the world stage, playing host to royalty, aristocrats, politicians, diplomats, artists and writers. Now you, too, can play a part in the 120 acre venue’s history, saying your vows there before showcasing the fabulous rolling countryside views to your guests on the incredible outdoor terrace. A unique feature of Wynyard Hall is that it’s one of a few unique venues that can provide couples with both religious and civil ceremony options, as well as reception rooms, all under one roof. Tie the knot in its 18th century private chapel in front of 120 seated guests, surrounded by stained glass windows and Italian marble walls. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little less traditional, the character and charm of the Ballroom (150 guests) or Mirror Room (100 guests) make for two stunning alternatives for a civil ceremony. Next, for your reception, head to one of Wynyard Hall’s state rooms for all your wedding needs. Grand scale celebrations and flamboyant entertainment are written in the history of the Hall, where lavish festivities, balls, garden parties and entertaining royalty were part and parcel of the venue. Here, you’ve the capacity and flexibility to create a wonderfully lavish evening reception, where you and up to 300 guests can dance the night away to a live band, followed by a dazzling fireworks display over the lake.

21 THEMED VENUES

www.stevenmcdonaldphotography.com

Howard Court is situated in North Yorkshire with stunning views of the Cleveland Hills and Roseberry Topping. Set in 12 acres of pasture and woodland, its sparkling frost-covered lawns and Roseberry Topping’s snow-covered peak form a beautiful backdrop for photos. During winter, hours are short, but Howard Court’s fairy lights, festoons and firepit add light and warmth, greeting guests when they arrive or wander out for a breath of fresh air. Once inside the barns, it’s cosy and warm, with their

sustainable ground-source heating keeping loves ones toasty.

Marry in the Barn, which seats up to 100. With the hay manger as your backdrop – intwined with fairy lights or wrapped in greenery and flowers – this is an ideal space to say your vows. The Courtyard is another option, should you wed in the warmer months, or opt for the Riverside Cabin: surrounded by nature, couples could bring hay bales and choose to get married near the river itself. The Stable and Barn are then transformed into your reception area, where you’ll enjoy your wedding breakfast against a curtain of fairy lights, before it’s transformed ready for that all-important first dance in front of up to 150 friends and family.

MATFEN HALL COUNTRY HOTEL, SPA & GOLF ESTATE

01661 886500 | https://matfenhall.com

The Great Hall is decorated with historic tapestries and furnishings, while mounted stag heads, coats of arms and atmospheric lighting adorns its walls. An ideal venue whatever the time of year, during the winter months Northumberland’s sweeping landscape creates a crisp, glittering

Anna and Matt lived in the same village, and went to the same schools, but never actually met until later on in life! “Over the years my friends became his friends, and we started to get to know each other that way,” says Anna. “We had a lot of nights out and holidays together, but we were never single at the same time, so nothing ever came of it. After being away for university and travelling, we found ourselves back in Newcastle at the same time, where we grew closer. Neither of us were looking for a relationship, but found ourselves wanting to spend more time together, and eventually both realised it was more than friendship.”

Matt proposed on a holiday to New York in December 2019. “We’d been to see Wicked, then Matt said we should go and get a picture by the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Centre, as I was desperate to see it at night. When we got there, Matt stopped a passer-by and asked them to take a photo – but whispered for her to take loads! When I turned around after getting ready for the picture Matt was down on one knee. I was gobsmacked, as he’d given no signals at all – and I thought I would have picked up on something!”

The couple chose Northumberland’s Hallington Mill for their 2nd July, 2022, wedding. Here, Anna tells us more about their big day…

29 REAL WEDDINGS
Scan to view video

We wanted somewhere fairly untouched, and Hallington Mill was charming and peaceful. We both kept looking at each other when we were shown around, with a knowing ‘this is the one’ look.

For our favours we chose Limoncello, as I love the colour yellow and wanted it to feature heavily on the day. Matt’s mum is also obsessed with lemons, so it made sense!

We chose sunflowers and daisies with cream roses. Sunflowers are my favourite flower, as I love how much they reflect summer and happiness.

We weren’t too fussed about a traditional cake, so chose tray bakes from a local cake-maker instead. We went for red velvet, lemon and chocolate Biscoff flavours, which were delicious.

I wore a Savin London Rebecca wedding dress. I initially tried it on and loved it, but thought it was too low cut. However, the designer was able to alter the neckline – so I had to go for it!

For table names we used pictures of us in the places we’ve visited together, from Costa Rica and New York to India, Ibiza and more. We also tried to put people on tables where the place had relevance to them.

30

Matt and his groomsmen wore dark green wool suit jackets, with dog tooth trousers and rust-coloured ties. We thought this tied in nicely with the bridesmaids’ dresses and woodland ceremony setting.

We wanted our catering to be relaxed, so after canapés from Citrus Catering we hired food vans. We picked Chuco’s and Parmo-rama, because we thought that gave people an option, as well as Scream for Pizza for the evening, as Matt orders from them a LOT!

We had our friend as our celebrant, who was brilliant. She brought humour into the ceremony, but was also sentimental. She also wore a colourful fruit basket on her head to top it off!

My sister is shy and said she wouldn’t do a speech, then surprised me on the day by coming out as my childhood hero, Mr Blobby! To overcome her fear meant the world to me, and Mr Blobby got a big laugh, too.

My bridesmaids wore sage green floor-length dresses from ASOS, but in varying styles as they’re all different shapes.

We had an ABBA tribute band, as I am completely obsessed with ABBA! They were incredible, changing costume seven times and getting everyone up on the dancefloor.

Our photographer was fantastic! She helped out with other duties, such as helping people know where they needed to be, and made us feel so comfortable.

Robyn and Lauren fell for each other over a match of football

TEAM

Robyn

and Lauren met during their first year at secondary school. “We sat one seat apart in form, but didn’t like each other much!” remembers Lauren. “I always referred to Robyn and her friends as ‘the mean girls’, and Robyn thought I was a nerd! It wasn’t until Year 11, when we both started playing for the same local football team, that Robyn realised I was the only person that could get the ball off her. One training session, as her way of flirting, Robyn soaked me in Lucozade –and the rest is history. We’ve been together since we were 15!”

Robyn proposed to Lauren on New Year’s Day, 2019. “It’s tradition that Robyn’s family gather at her Gran’s, but this year was particularly special, as Robyn had been in America for over a year on a football scholarship,” continues Lauren. “She was flying back again a few days after New Year, so her leaving was tough. Unaware of what was about to happen, we gathered in front of the TV, before Robyn streamed a video she’d made of photos of us together, over the soundtrack of Bruno Mars’ Marry You. When the video ended, she got down on one knee, before passing me a Christmas cracker that Robyn and her mam had hidden the engagement ring in. Obviously, it was a very easy, ‘Yes!’ from me!”

The couple set the date for the 30th July, 2022, choosing Newcastle’s The Willows at the Woodmans for their big day. Here, Lauren tells us more about their amazing wedding…

AGAINST ALL ODDS

When searching for their venue Robyn and Lauren stumbled upon The Willows at the Woodmans by chance. “We were meant to get married in 2020, then Covid hit, and our first venue went into liquidation,” says Lauren. “Our second venue was gifted to us by a family friend, however, Covid meant we had to cancel again the following year. 2022 came, and we thought we were over the worst – until our venue was damaged by weather and our wedding was postponed once more. We then went on the hunt for our third venue, hoping it would most definitely be the case of fourth time lucky!”

In fact it was Instagram that came to the rescue, with the couple’s friend, a wedding coordinator, posting a message on her story asking for help. “Ruth, the wedding planner at The Willows, replied, inviting us to go and see their venue,” continues Lauren. “We took both mams along – and every one of us cried. It was everything we’d ever wanted, a combination of vintage and rustic meets class. Ruth was so accommodating, and in that time of pure stress was the calming voice we needed. The views were amazing, the ceremony and wedding breakfast rooms needed no decoration, plus it embodied everything we could possibly wish for. When we walked in our favourite country song was on – it was as if they knew us from the second we arrived!”

ROSES ARE… PINK

When it came to wedding flowers the couple knew exactly what bloom should take centre stage. “We opted for the pink Mondial rose, choosing them because Robyn often surprises me with bouquets of roses when she’s coming home from work,” says Lauren. “We wanted a baby pink rose, as they look more timeless, plus pink is our favourite colour. I decided on a structured bouquet, asking for eucalyptus around the outside to match Robyn’s rustic bouquet and centrepieces. Structured is very much ‘me’, as everything has to have its place, whereas Robyn wanted something wilder to match her personality. For the bridesmaids, we chose bouquets of gypsophila, and I also incorporated them into my hair. All the men wore rose and eucalyptus buttonholes, while our mams were given corsages of the same blooms.”

As The Willows at the Woodmans was already beautifully decorated, Robyn and Lauren didn’t feel the need to add much. “We kept the venue’s wooden chairs as they were to keep in with the rustic theme,” continues Lauren. “There are also huge chandeliers in all rooms, which again made everything classy and worked perfectly. We used eucalyptus rings for our centrepieces, which tied in with both of our bouquets, but without the expense of adding roses. A little gypsophila was added to break up the green, then in the centre we used vases filled with a mixture of pink pillar candles and floating candles. On our top table, we also had candles of different heights, with a mixture of white and pink pillar candles and floating tealights.”

COMFORT FOOD

Feeing their guests warm and filling dishes was an important aspect of the couple’s big day. “We opted for no starters, but for the main meal enjoyed beef and turkey sandwiches, along with unlimited roast potatoes and boatloads of gravy,” says Lauren. “Our vegetarian guests feasted on halloumi burgers and roasties, while the kids tucked into fish, pizza and chicken nuggets and chips. Our night-time buffet was a delicious range of pubs classics, such as pizzas and bao buns, which were the biggest hits. Everyone raved about them – especially the tempura-battered cauliflower balls!”

The couple’s wedding cake was another huge hit of the day. “We wanted our cake to match the minimal, rustic theme, with the whole vibe being very woodland,” adds Lauren. “The top tier was white chocolate and raspberry, with the bottom tier a chocolate orange flavour. The cake rested on a tree trunk slab, which was supplied by our venue. I think designing and tasting the cake with our supplier, Marielle, was one of our favourite parts of the process. She made everything a breeze, and is one of the nicest humans I’ve ever met! She even gifted us our cake because of all the stress we’d been through with the wedding! Regardless of her generosity, the cake was everything we could have wished for and more.”

HAPPY SHOPPERS

Two brides meant two wedding dresses, with Robyn and Lauren shopping in different stores. “Robyn wore a fit and flare gown with a jewel neckline in full lace,” says Lauren. “Creating an illusion of a sweetheart neckline, the back of the dress was lace with a trail of beautiful buttons. She also added a belt, which was stitched on to the front with several smaller jewels either side, leading to a large centre jewel. Of course, Robyn had the easiest dress shopping experience ever! She went in looking for a plain dress and tried one on, before realising it wasn’t for her. She then tried on a second – and instantly knew it was the one! I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words how beautiful she looked in her dress. On the morning of the wedding the videographer even said, ‘You are the prettiest bride I’ve ever seen’ – which seemed to be a common theme throughout the entire day!”

Lauren’s dress shopping experience, however, wasn’t that simple. “I’d visited several dress outlets and was starting to feel deflated,” she says. “My body’s changed over the years, and in my head I wanted something plain and simple, as I hate standing out. I then went to Brides and Beauty in Gateshead with my mam, who saw a dress and asked me to try it on. At this point, we were running out of time, so I agreed – and it was perfect! I was most surprised at the sweetheart neckline, as all along I’d been telling everyone that I wanted something that covered my boobs!”

SING FOR YOUR SUPPER

With a famous singer in the family, music had to be an integral part of Robyn and Lauren’s celebrations. “Robyn’s dad is Shaun Foster Conley, who you’ll have no doubt seen many a time perform on the hit ITV show, Benidorm,” continues Lauren. “We wanted to kick the night off with songs we knew everyone would get up and dance to – and Shaun totally nailed it! His voice sounds very much like Tom Jones, so he was an excellent addition to our entertainment. After he had performed everyone was up and ready to party.”

The singing, however, didn’t end there. “Prior to Shaun’s set, we also got our guests to all sing Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” says Lauren. “When the ceremony ended, our friends and family were handed out laminated lyric sheets; then the music started, and every single person sang the song as we walked up the aisle. It’s a memory we will never forget!”

Even Lauren herself got in on the singing action, which came as a huge surprise for new wife Robyn. “I cannot sing in the slightest, but sang Valerie on the karaoke regardless!” she remembers. “It was totally acapella, but everyone was up dancing and having the time of their lives!”

KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU

You know a couple are meant to be when their little touches make all the difference. “Before the wedding, Robyn told all our suppliers to steer clear of my room wherever possible,” says Lauren. “She did this as she knew I’d be stressed – and a tad Bridezilla! – which in turn would make my mam anxious. Instead, Robyn invited everyone into her room as a ‘chill out zone’, but in fact it had the opposite effect. One by one all the vendors walked out of Robyn’s room back into mine, laughing at how nervous Robyn was. I, however, was happily lying on the bed, stress-free, reading the best things to do in Gateshead!”

REAL WEDDINGS 37

The thoughtfulness certainly didn’t end there, with yet another surprise in store for Lauren. “Robyn got me a puppy on our wedding day!” says Lauren. “We’d spoken about getting another pet to keep our rescue dog company, but as I’m a teacher decided we’d wait until the end of the six-week holiday. After our ceremony, we walked outside to get some pictures taken, only to see Robyn’s brother, Fraser, with a gorgeous fur baby in his arms. We named her Willow after our venue.”

LAUREN’S TOP TIP

“Talk to each other during the planning. You’ll both have different ideas, so chat about everything to come to a solution.”

Sarah met Andrew after her best friend, Alison, suggested she sign up to dating site Plenty of Fish. “I’d been on a couple of rubbish dates, before a message from Andrew popped up,” says Sarah. “I checked out his profile and saw him standing in front of a fire engine, so that got my attention pretty much straight away! We had our first date in Corbridge back in 2012, sitting for a couple of hours in a coffee shop chatting away. We then went for lunch in a local pub and spent the afternoon getting to know each other more. To be totally honest, the minute I saw him I was smitten!”

Andrew proposed to Sarah on Christmas Day, 2018. “Andrew

placed a large box under the tree four weeks earlier, and when I opened it on Christmas morning there was a smaller box, followed by an even smaller one,” continues the bride. “When I eventually opened the smallest box and saw an engagement ring it was a huge but amazing surprise! I was actually hoping it would be a pair of binoculars, as I love watching the birds! We’d even had a conversation the week before, where Andrew had said he didn’t want to get married!”

The couple set the date of 16th June, 2022, choosing Langley Castle as their venue. Here, Sarah tells us more about their big day…

The morning of our wedding was really relaxed, with everyone getting ready and drinking Champagne. My best friend Alison and I got our hair and make-up done together, which was really special.

The minute I saw my Ronald Joyce Celestina dress I knew it was the one. I used to sell wedding dresses as a Saturday job when I was younger, and always knew I wanted something different.

We got married outside, as the weather turned out to be amazing. I literally felt like a Princess all day long!

I didn’t want to wear a lot of accessorises, as I didn’t want to take anything away from my dress. I did, however, have bright pink sequins shoes!

Our dog Amber was with us the whole day. Andrew was nervous, so making sure she was OK gave him something to focus on. She even had her own dickie bow tie!

HISTORY IN THE BAKING

We asked Graeme Venus from Sticky Sponge Cake Studio (www.stickysponge.co.uk) on how the trend for serving cake at your big day came about in the first place…

“The wedding cake originally appeared in the form of pies back in the 16th and 17th centuries, then from this single tier cakes appeared. These

cakes were more like sweet, yeasted breads, with spices and fruits, as opposed to the kinds of cakes we know today. Gradually, these cakes made way for ‘plum cakes’, now known as fruit cakes, with it being common for them to be glazed with sugar icing. The whiter your icing, the better, as sugar was expensive and made more of a statement to your wedding.”

THE NAKED TRUTH

Considering going starkers on your wedding day? Your cake, we mean – we don’t think your Auntie Edna could cope with seeing the pair of you in all your glory. With the trend for naked and semi-naked cakes showing no signs of abating, we asked Patricia Egan from the Ivory Cake Company (www.ivorycakecompany.co.uk) whether you should really grin and bare it with this ever-popular style… “Semi-naked and naked cakes will be here for quite some time, mainly because of some of the beautiful rustic venues that are around now, which is where they fit in perfectly. Semi-naked cakes, as opposed to naked, seem to be the most popular;

www.ivorycakecompany.co.uk

sponge cakes with a choice of filling lightly coated in either buttercream or sometimes white chocolate ganache, before being decorated with fresh flowers or fruit – or both! Naked cakes are similar, however, don’t have the final coat of buttercream or ganache.”

DOS OR DON’TS?

“I’d never fill a naked or semi-naked cake with fresh cream, as there’d be no stability for stacking and would most probably end up collapsing! Sugar flowers can also be too heavy for a semi-naked or naked cake, and in my opinion believe the moisture from this style can damage them.”

FLOWER POWER

Who says flowers just have to be in your hands as you walk up the aisle? “Couples seem to be getting more adventurous with their sugar flowers, with delphiniums, ranunculus and all kinds of roses and peonies on my orders for 2023,” says Ashley Harkness from Mrs BouCake (www.facebook.com/mrsboucake). “I see both dried and fresh flowers continuing to be popular on buttercream cakes, with painted floral cakes high up there too. Because of this I’m brushing up on my painted cake techniques… every day is a school day in the world of cakes! I personally think rice paper flowers look extremely elegant, and am now featuring more of those in my bakes. I also like to add special touches to my designs, such as a flower that has particular importance to the couple, or perhaps in memory of a loved one that’s passed. I’ve even hidden family pets that have been sculpted from sugar in amongst the flowers!”

DOS OR DON’TS?

“Don’t be afraid to try something new – I’m finding that people are becoming more adventurous with cake flavours. Salted caramel, lemon and raspberry and Lotus Biscoff are becoming some of the most favourited. The same goes for your design – who says you have to be traditional?” www.facebook.com/mrsboucake

ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT

White wedding cakes will never go out of fashion, with the origins of having such a colour surrounding the purity of the bride herself. “When choosing your white wedding cake the options are endless, from traditional to contemporary,” explains cake-maker Ayesha Ali from Deluxe Wedding Cakes (www.deluxeweddingcakes.com). “One trend is wafer paper décor, which achieves an airy design and attracts couples that want a modern and contemporary twist in their cake. There’s also replicate pattern, a personal favourite of mine, as you can replicate a pattern or textile you love and add a personal touch to your cake to ensure it becomes the focal point of your wedding. Buttercream finished wedding cakes are my specialty, and when couples come to me I spend time getting to know them, as well as their wedding theme, so I can help them choose the right finish. There are numerous styles that a couple can choose for their white wedding cake such as boho, stencilling, wafer paper, replicate design, watercolour and textured finish.” DOS OR DON’TS?

“Do play with your tier size rather than playing safe – a tall tier will certainly make a bold statement! Ask your baker lots of questions so you know all the options available to you, and make a mood board to help you achieve the style you want. Finally, don’t only follow the trends – be experimental and let your baker create something unique!” www.deluxeweddingcakes.com www.deluxeweddingcakes.com www.deluxeweddingcakes.com www.deluxeweddingcakes.com

TO BRIE OR NOT TO BRIE

Not a sugar lover? It’s your day – so why not opt for a cake made of incredible cheese instead? “We allow each couple to pick the cheeses that they want for their wedding cake,” says Ann-Louise Scott from the Northumberland Cheese Company (www.northumberlandcheese.co.uk). “If of course you ask for our advice, we’re here to help, but the most important thing for us is that you’re both happy with what you’ve ordered and can enjoy your day. We have four different sized cakes available, which cater for 60 up to 160. Options available include Oak Smoked – traditionally smoked over oak embers – Northumberland Nettle, Northumberland Original, Northumberland Chilli, Elsdon goats’ cheese and Redesdale sheep cheese. We also offer seasonal specials, which our wedding cake consultant will let you know if they’re available for your cake.”

DOS OR DON’TS?

“Do think about when you plan on serving your cake. Sometimes people serve it too late, or the venue may forget about displaying it, which results in cheese being left over. Also, please bear in mind that we do not decorate them, as each couple wants something different. However, that’s the good thing with this option, as you never get the same cake twice!”

MINI ME

www.northumberlandcheese.co.uk www.northumberlandcheese.co.uk

Who says you have to have a wedding cake at all? Instead, why not share miniature varieties of the treats you love with your guests instead? Think piles of waffles, melt-in-the-mouth macarons, cake pops and even a huge pile of profiteroles – it’s your day, so you can choux what you like! “Dessert tables are a hugely popular option at the moment for those who either don’t need or just don’t fancy a big wedding cake,” says Vanilla Teas cake-maker Helen Edwards (www.vanillateas.co.uk). “A small cutting cake surrounded by a selection of delicious bite-size sweet treats looks amazing, and you can really let your imagination run wild with the cake stands – think different heights, shapes, and sizes to add interest and create an amazing display. We offer a large choice of goodies on our dessert tables (over 20 choices!) with the most popular options including brownies, cake pops, mini Victoria sponge cakes and doughnut towers. Some options, such as meringues and mousses, are gluten-free, while other options can be made to anyone’s dietary requirements. We even offer mini fruit kebabs as a healthy option, which look pretty and add a splash of colour.” DOS OR DON’TS?

“The weather is always worth a thought, so it’s probably worth avoiding creamy mousses and cheesecakes when the weather is warm. Also, don’t make anything too big when it comes to this trend, as people are looking for little bites. The last thing any guest wants in their best outfit is to end up wearing half their dessert…”

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

52

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day.

You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. AQUA(WO)MAN

The latest fragrance from perfumer Juliet Has A Gun, Ego Straits, is an original aquatic cologne with a refreshing and energising citrus top note cocktail, laying on a long-lasting marine heart. The result is a contemporary, almost unisex, women’s fragrance, an ode to gender fluidity.

The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

SHE’S GOT THE LOOK

We’re having an autumnal 2023 wedding and I’d love my bridesmaids and I to have soft, romantic hairstyles. What do you suggest?

I recommend an effortless low bun for your bridesmaids, with horizontal volume leading into it. You can take inspiration from this photo, as it was the most perfect style that bride Natalie and her bridesmaids trusted me

TIME TO CHANGE?

I’m stuck in a rut with my make-up. What would you advise to turn heads at my wedding?

On your big day, the most important thing is that you look and feel the very best version of yourself. Always start with skincare, even if it’s just the basics. Why? It gives the best canvas for your make-up and helps it last into late night dancing!

If you have booked a make-up artist, work closely with them to perfect the ideal look for you. In my opinion this all starts by booking a trial, as you may or may not know what suits you – and that’s where an experienced make-up artist comes in to the equation! A trial will also give you the chance to see how your skin wears the make-up, as the last thing you want is a look that doesn’t sit well throughout the day and night.

Finally, once you find your dream lipstick and shade, make sure you have it with you throughout your wedding for top ups!

to choose. You can easily dress the style up a little more by having it sleek, or you can have it a little dressed out for a more grungey look. Both of these ideas are perfect for an autumnal wedding – and the best thing about this style is that it suits all hair types! Buns like this look amazing next to waved curls, seen here on Natalie, which have been half pinned at the back. In my eyes it’s a timeless look that never goes out of style. Jordyn Breanne Riley, Bridal Hair By JB | www.instagram.com/bridalhairbyjb

It’s a true treasure trove of wedding dresses and accessories to complement every bride on her ever-after journey.”

www.djmphotography.co.uk

The trends: “A-line gowns are extremely strong for 2023,” continues Cheryl. “We are seeing lots of simple yet striking silhouettes with exaggerated necklines or large bow detailing. However, regardless of trends it’s important that every bride feels confident and loves her gown. It’s always a personal preference when it comes to your dress, and all that matters is that you love everything about your design, so you have the confidence to wear it and shine on your big day.”

Ordering your gown: “Especially in the current climate, delays are inevitable, so we suggest ordering your gown nice and early. It’s best to pick your dress 12-18 months before your wedding, but it’s really just when you feel ready to find ‘the one’.”

Cheryl’s top tip: “Come to your appointment with your hair roughly in the style you’re thinking of for your big day, to give you an idea of necklines. You could also bring along a comfortable pair of heels in your preferred heel height if you wish, but this isn’t essential.”

The trends: “I’m loving seeing the more modern and relaxed trend for the fashion-conscious bride,” continue Kate. “Our designs offer all of the above, and we’ll be bringing more of this into our new collections, as well as our signature detailing, embellishments and fashion forward silhouettes.”

www.djmphotography.co.uk

Ordering your gown: “Order 12 months before your wedding, but start enquiring beforehand. We design and make everything from our studio, which enables us to have control over the schedule and production. It’s better to plan ahead to ensure plenty of time.”

Kate’s top tip: “Trust your gut! I’m here to listen to your needs and to guide, help and advise you to discover your perfect style. There’s no pressure or obligation, and I guarantee you’ll leave feeling sometimes surprised, always excited – and that you’ve had a great experience.”

We hold a very unique position, where we’re able to source amazing designer gowns and provide them for significantly discounted prices from their RRP. I strongly believe in making my brides feel amazing on their big day, without you having to break the bank!”

The trends: “I’ll be honest – I’m not a big believer in trends changing year on year,” continues Susanne. “My brides are all unique, with their own style, so it changes according to that. Having said that, A-line dresses are always popular, as it’s a shape that flatters most. I’m also seeing a continued interest in dresses that have a relaxed, boho vibe.” Ordering your gown: “In a perfect world, after booking your venue and photographer your dress should come next. So much goes around your dress, including your colour scheme, bridesmaids’ dresses, budget, flowers – even your hair. However, as all of our dresses are one-offs and available immediately, it’s a personal decision. I’ve had brides find a dress three weeks before their wedding!”

Susanne’s top tip: “It’s sometimes true that too many opinions cause chaos, which can be overwhelming for the bride. My advice is to bring whoever you want, and whoever makes you comfortable. It’s your day –and it’s your dress!”

The trends: “Where you see external boning on the bodice, drawing the eye to the bust and waist, is a strong theme right now,” continues Helen. “I’ve also noticed more 3D embellishment, not just on dresses, but also with accessories such as wraps and veils. Coloured wedding dresses are popular, too – think pastel pinks, blues and multi-coloured.”

Ordering your gown: “I recommend making decisions 10 to 12 months before your wedding. This way you get to see the latest collections available to order at the time, and you might even bag yourself a bargain with a dress from a previous collection!”

Helen’s top tip: “I ask that brides refrain from wearing fake tan as it stains the gowns. Wear whatever make-up you’re comfortable with, though, so you feel confident when trying dresses on. A nude pair of seamless knickers is also ideal.”

SISTERS OF GRACE BRIDAL

www.sistersofgracebridal.co.uk

Where? Newcastle

Prices? £600–£4,500 Sizes? 2–30

The lowdown: “Sisters of Grace brings our curation of contemporary luxe bridal wear to the North East,” says owner Danni Hesketh. “Our designers have been handpicked to reflect our ethos and our brides’ unique styles. From free spirited bohemian laces and fashionforward two pieces, to bold hand painted florals and chic modern statement makers, we house the dream edit with an experience to match.”

The trends: “Hitting the catwalks for next year are coloured florals, statement puff sleeves and bold ballgowns with chic splits,” continues Danni. “Having said that, your dress should always reflect you and your personal style.”

Ordering your gown: “Around 12 months before your day is the perfect time to find your dress, as it usually takes four to six months for it to be made and delivered. Your final alterations start six weeks before the day, too. This means you’ve a couple of months between your dress arriving to finalise all the little details for your special day.”

Danni’s top tip: “Comfort and confidence are two main points to keep in mind when dress shopping, and they go hand in hand with one another – you want to shine all day long!”

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW SUSTAINABLE BRIDAL WEAR

07594 351166 | www.facebook.com/SomethingoldSomethingnew2022

Where? Darlington Prices? £50–£999

Sizes? 8–30

The lowdown: “All our wedding dresses are preloved, but some are new with tags on,” says director Deborah Atkinson. “All of them are either half price or less. We promote brides to be eco- and budget-conscious, which means you save money and do your bit to save the planet. We offer 0% budget plans for up to six months following a 25% deposit, if a gown is £600 and over, and up to three months following a 25% deposit, if under £600. We also give £10 to charity for every dress bought, giving back to the community.”

The trends: “Dealing with only preloved dresses, our trends tend to be previous seasons,” continues Deborah. “However, we also cater for older brides, as well as those renewing their vows and getting remarried, who aren’t necessarily looking for current trends. We do still get dresses in stock that have only been worn a few weeks previously, all of which are cleaned and turned round ready to make a new bride shine.” Ordering your gown: “We advise you buy your dress six months prior to your wedding, to ensure it can be altered in time. However, as our dresses are preloved, we’ve had many brides walk out with their dress not needing any alterations, which again is good for your budget.”

Deborah’s top tip: “Try on as many dresses as you wish or that we have available in your size. We want your appointment to be relaxed and fun, giving you the chance to find what you feel the most comfortable in. We’ve had some brides try on 15 dresses – and some only three and found the one!”

THE WEDDING DRESS COMPANY

01434 634444 |

www.theweddingdresscompany.co.uk Where? Corbridge Prices? £1,300–£3,000 Sizes? 8–22

The lowdown: “Our brides tell us we have the best selection of dresses in the North East,” says owner Sarah Stokoe. “ Whether you’re looking for simple, boho or glamorous, we have it. The dresses are important, but we also have luxurious décor in a pretty village location with lots of quaint shops and places to eat. Each bride also gets completely private use of the boutique, and we even stock our own accessories.”

The trends: “Sleeves are big at the moment, whether it be fitted, blouson, off the shoulder or voluminous,” continues Sarah. “Bridal gloves are set to be another trend, as are dresses with leg splits, and gowns made of luxurious fabrics such as sand washed silk or liquid crepe.”

Ordering your gown: “ We suggest brides buy their dress 12 to 18 months before their wedding. Some of the designers are on an eight month delivery schedule, and then you need to choose your accessories and have any alterations after your design arrives.”

Sarah’s top tip: “Be prepared to fall in love with a dress as soon as you start trying them on – it happens more often than not, and the process isn’t as difficult as people tell you! We don’t set a limit on how many dresses you should try, as each bride is different. Some know what they want, so will usually try less than another bride who’s open to every style.”

SANYUKTA SHRESTHA

Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it. One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com

GRACE LOVES LACE

Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”

Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”

The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.” https://graceloveslace.co.uk

VERA WANG BRIDE

Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.

Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.

Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”

In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32).

Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.

Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com

ANDREA HAWKES

British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”

Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.

Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come. www.andreahawkes.co.uk

Grooms editor Melissa Cullen reveals the latest best buys and product launches

WatchPilot, a UK-based watch retailer, has opened its first high street store in Richmond, Surrey. Founded in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic by Tim Harrison and Akbar Hussain, WatchPilot launched online with success and has added new brands to the platform monthly. Now, along with affordable and high-end timepieces, the new bricks and mortar store will showcase more than 30 brands of watches and employ experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Tim Harrison tells us: “We will continue to grow our online presence, however, particularly within the luxury side of watch retail, there will always be demand for a premium in-store experience. If our initial Richmond store proves successful, we are open to replicating the concept in other locations.”

SUITS YOU

HOT TOPIC

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

My partner and I want matching suits for our wedding – but also don’t want to look identical. What should we choose?

Here at Bakers, we recommend subtle changes, such as the waistcoat style or colour to give your suit a lift. Double breasted waistcoats are on trend right now, and work if you’re looking for a difference to your wedding photos. Other ways could be adding fancy ties to give more of an occasion-outfit feel. You want a look that’s timeless, sharp and individual. Sometimes changes can be as small as adding a pocket watch to your outfit, or having a different buttonhole. Whatever you go for, bear in mind that wedding outfits don’t need to be bold and eccentric. A good-fitting garment can be all you need – the pictures are for life, so don’t date your pictures for the sake of being different.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Our big day is fast approaching, and we’re thinking of booking a videographer, but aren’t sure what to look for. Do you have any tips?

Ask any married couple what their day was like, and they won’t be able to answer without mentioning how fast it goes! So, if you’re thinking of hiring a videographer to give you a forever return ticket to the real emotions of the day, you won’t regret it.

Choosing a videographer can be a difficult task, so our biggest piece of advice would be to watch their films, as we all have our own styles. Also, watch highlights of videographers who’ve filmed at your venue, picking one whose films make you feel something. If you get emotional watching a stranger’s video, just imagine the feeling of watching your own!

SOUND OF MUSIC

We’re having a wedding with guests of all ages. What music would you suggest to please everyone?

There’s no right or wrong answer, as it’s down to what you as a couple prefer. However, from our experience, having a wide range of up tempo material, ideally spanning a number of decades and genres, works best – a ‘something for everyone’ approach, if you like.

Borderland plays pop, rock, soul, disco, funk, dance, indie and even reggae, covering artists as diverse as Sam Fender and Bob Marley to Dua Lipa and The Proclaimers! Just make sure you never shy away from playing ‘obvious’ songs. It might be fun having your favourite Pink Floyd album track played, but there’s no way your guests will enjoy it as much as being able to belt out Sweet Caroline! Remember: every band should have a little bit of ‘cheese in their set!

Mark Harrison, Borderland | www.borderlandmusic.co.uk

YOU’RE INVITED

DOUBLE UP

We’re on a budget and want to double up with our decorations – but are clueless how to do this. Can you help?

We always tell couples to double up when and where you can. You want your ceremony to look beautiful, but be mindful you’re only in the that room for an hour, tops! One way to maximise your styling is to use your centrepieces down the aisle first, whether this is candlelight or florals – or both! If you have a backdrop for the all-important ‘I dos’, you can have this moved after the ceremony to another area, such as behind the top table or as a photo backdrop opportunity. Finally, any décor you have on your registrar table can be moved to form part, or all, of your décor for the top table during your wedding breakfast.

Emma Pearson, Ambience Venue Styling Teesside | www.ambiencevenuestyling.com/wedding-stylists/teesside

I’m excited about our wedding and want everyone we love to be there. When should we send out invites, and what tips can you share when it comes to a bespoke design?

I recommend sending invitations six to eight months before your wedding, but check with your venue when they need final numbers. Think about sending Save The Dates around 12 to 18 months, too, so everyone can mark the date in their diaries.

Your invitations will be the first impression guests have of your wedding, so you want to set the tone. Think about the theme and style – is it rustic and lace, bold and bling or elegantly understated? Gather ideas on Pinterest so your stationer can get a sense of your style and create something unique. You could even include symbols or themes for personalised stationery, like tiny paw prints on a dog-loving couples’ invitations, or ticketstub invites for cinema lovers!

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.
