Meant to be
Youknow that saying ‘life begins at 40’? Well, for one of our brides it began again at 50! That’s when Jules married Gary, with it taking them a whopping 38 years to fall in love. Their wedding day, which you can see in all its splendor on page 37, shows that you don’t have to get hitched at a certain age; and that circumstances sometimes change, meaning this might not even be your first big day. So, if you’re reading this and have been married before, don’t ever feel you should be celebrating less – go all out and celebrate your love for your soonto-be spouse in exactly the way you both want!
Also this issue, we’ve plenty of ideas and inspiration for organising a celebration to end all celebrations. Ready to start planning? Turn to page 43 for some of the best North East suppliers worth checking out. Thinking of what to feed friends and family? Our catering guide on page 49 has you covered, from mobile bars and canapé experts, to cake creators and five-star cuisine. We’ve also plenty of gorgeous gowns to drool over, including lacy numbers (p67) and ruffles galore (61); while our honeymoons section, starting on page 80, may throw you into disarray at where you want to relax post-wedding – as there are just too many gorgeous cities and countries to choose from!
Until the next issue… Claire

WEDDING TRENDS
We asked bridal expert and celebrant, Jo Stott of Newcastle’s Love Jo Ceremonies, what you could choose and why if opting for a celebrant affair…
GESTURES OF LOVE “Many couples show their commitment through hand-tying ceremonies, while another had a tree planting ceremony, planting a rose bush in soil from their parents’ gardens. The soil signified the nourishment from each family, and the rose was a wish for a sweet marriage.”
MID-CEREMONY TOAST “Alcohol is allowed during celebrant weddings, and I offer my couples the option of a ‘Sip and Save’. This is
where friends and family are offered a tipple on entry to the ceremony; encouraged to take a sip and save the rest for a toast after the vows.”
TELLING YOUR STORY “Putting your story at the heart of your ceremony shows guests why you’re perfect for one another. This could be how you met, or even an anecdote from your first holiday together.”
CREATE A TRADITION “Why not incorporate a unique detail to ensure your love story will be passed down the generations? My couples add a modern twist to create something new, such as a sip of a G&T – the drink from their first date – rather than a traditional drink of life (whisky).” https://lovejoceremonies.co.uk

Watch this space: we’ll here to be your go-to wedding supplier!” www.instagram.com/singing_waitresses
Want your mam to look as gorgeous as you? Course you do. With this in mind head to Chester Le Street’s Wedding Wardrobe bridal boutique and check out their new Mother of the Bride and Groom collection. “Our range of beautiful dresses, jackets and wraps are made with high quality fabrics in jersey, chiffon and lace,” says Wedding Wardrobe’s Tracey Whelan. “Our outfits are perfectly understated in style and have a fantastic price point to match, with dresses ranging from £220 to £340. Each outfit is available in up to 50 colours, so is easy to coordinate with the rest of the bridal party. How to tell someone’s truly in love? Take a
look
at Mark and Mark saying their vows

MarkLewis met Mark Westgarth on a dating app in 2017. “We discovered we had quite a lot in common,” says Mark L. “Mark’s a bus driver, and so’s my stepdad, and we realised they knew each other before we’d met!”
Both Marks felt a connection, and arranged to meet. “We went to Beamish and got fish and chips while walking around,” continues Mark L. “It was pouring with rain on a freezing January day, but everything about it felt perfect. Mark was so easy to talk to, and I loved his smile –and his bum!”
Mark L proposed to Mark W on holiday in Turkey. “I worked in
Marmaris two years earlier and still had friends there,” he continues. “I wanted to propose at sunset overlooking Icmeler beach, but my plan nearly went to pot when one of my friends moaned that she didn’t want to go. In the end she agreed, and I took Mark to see the scenery. Taking the moment in for a while, I plucked up the courage and said, ‘I haven’t just brought you here to look at the views.’ I’ll never forget Mark’s face as he realised what I was about to ask!”
The couple set the date of 23rd September, 2022, marrying at Gateshead Register Office before a reception at St Mary’s Heritage Centre. Here, they tell us more about their big day…
25 REAL
WEDDINGS
When we look around Gateshead Register Office’s renovated suite, with new furniture and high quality finishes, we knew it was perfect. Mark L’s mam and stepdad also married there in 1997.
We chose navy blue as our main colour for dressing the venue, while our flowers consisted of white roses, thistles, eucalyptus and gypsophila.
We were unsure what to use for tables names, eventually deciding on places we’d lived between us. As Mark L has been a rep, it wasn’t an issue coming up with locations!
Mark W’s grandma was christened and went to Sunday school at St Mary’s when it was a church; his aunty married there; and his great uncle wound its clock. We had to have our reception there!
We created our own sweets table for our reception, buying jars and a selection of treats. It was fairly easy to do and definitely saved us money.
As Mark is a bus driver, we arranged for a double decker bus to transport guests from the ceremony to our reception. We loved the digital ‘Congratulations’ message they added to the front.
26
It was important our groomsmaids were happy with their outfits, letting them choose their own dresses in their preferred style. We also hired hair and make-up artists so they looked extra-sensational.
In the evening professional drag queen Dixie Tucker performed a song and got our friends and family involved. It went down a storm, with her also playing party tunes until late.
We left what to wear until six weeks before the wedding, trying on several blue suits that didn’t feel right. Slaters Newcastle suggested grey, complementing with navy accessories, and we loved the result.
As Mark L walked up the aisle, he realised that everything after that moment was superficial. Saying our vows was what mattered; it was so emotional and we bonded on such a spiritual level.
Our wedding naked-style cake was amazing! We opted for different flavours for each of the tiers, choosing Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and caramel. We also had a personalised cake knife.
We arranged a photo booth for the evening, with our guests sticking a copy of their photos in a scrapbook for us. We loved reading the messages and looking at the pictures after the wedding.
27 REAL WEDDINGS
The heckling of Mark W’s best man during his speech was brilliant. He’s quite short, and had only said one sentence when someone shouted, ‘Stand up!’. He climbed on his chair and the room erupted in laughter!
Our photographer was outstanding. Mark and I wanted to spend some time together to take in what had just happened, and so many of the photos Victoria took truly captured that intimacy.
Follow your gut and make the day about the two of you. Enjoy every moment, taking a step back to take it all in. You’ll never experience emotions and feelings like that again.

Claire
and Dan first met through Tinder. “Dan messaged, and we met a week later for drinks,” remembers the bride. “I’d been in such a rush to get ready that I had no time to eat. Not wanting to be a messy drunk after a few doubles, I insisted on scranning a massive lasagne in Wetherspoons, while Dan looked on in amazement. He was used to going out with girls who’d only eat salad, whereas I’ve always been a foodie. Lasagne and a few shots later, we started our cocktail quest of Newcastle. The conversation flowed as easily as the drinks, and before we knew it the night had slipped away. Dan managed to ‘miss’ the last metro home – and the rest, as they say, is history…”
Dan proposed to Claire on a trip to Rome. “It was our second day sightseeing and my feet were wrecked from my ill-fitting sandals,” continues Claire. “After buying some overpriced trainers we soldiered on, ending up at the Trevi Fountain where I wandered off to find the perfect Insta shot. Dan appeared with a street photographer, asking him to take some photos on my phone. All of a sudden he got down on one knee, asking that all-important question. By this stage a crowd had gathered, and, as he slipped the ring on my finger, everyone cheered. A lady nearby handed us a coin, which we were told to throw in the fountain to make a wish. It was our first engagement present – and even though it was from a stranger it will always be our most treasured one.”
The couple set the date for the 31st May, 2022, choosing Newton Hall for their big day. Here, Claire tells us more about their amazing celebration…
TO SEA – OR NOT TO SEA?
The couple originally considered tying the knot in Florida. “However, the uncertainty of Covid, plus the fact my Grandad was 94 (but fit as a fiddle), meant we soon changed our minds,” says Claire. “While furloughed, Dan and I drove to a new beach every time the sun came out for a stroll. One day we stumbled across Newton by the Sea, and fell in love all over again – but this time with a place rather than a person! As we tucked into our picnic, Dan and I agreed this is where we should marry – and lo and behold, there stood Newton Hall, just a five minute drive away! We knew it was our venue straight away.”
A little under a year later, as restrictions eased, the couple were finally able to visit to get a feel for the place. “At this point Newton Hall was just our reception venue, as we wanted to get married on the beach,” continues Claire. “However, the moment we walked in we quickly changed our minds. Stepping inside the Enchanted Chapel, we were swept into its romance and splendour. Dan glanced over at me for just one moment, and I knew that was his way of saying he wanted to get married there. It was goodbye windy beach hair; shouting to be heard by 50 or so guests; and exchanging smart shoes for flip-flops in the sand! Even though a beach ceremony was what we originally wanted, Newton Hall and its welcoming presence won us over – and we are so glad it did!”
LIFE’S A BEACH
When it came to wedding signage, Claire went along the DIY route. “I’ve always had a passion for graphic design, so couldn’t wait to get started on our table plan, table names, place names and welcome sign,” she says. “For the signage, I used acrylic pens on A1 boards, attaching them to garden arches, before adding white mesh curtains and pineapple fairy lights. All this cost less than £30! For the place settings I wrote guests’ names in a white calligraphy font on a fabric palm tree leaf, which cost less than £10 for a pack of 50 on Amazon.”
With a beach theme in place, Claire and Dan set to work on extra touches for the reception. “I added a treasure chest to each table with a set of Cards Against Matrimony inside, opting for charades for family members who might not find them as amusing,” continues the bride. “We also wanted something different from the more traditional wedding favour, which ended up being another way to get those beach vibes in. I’d bought a miniature deckchair a few years back to use as a phone holder when washing up, which I realised would make the perfect gift! It was a place guests could rest their phones in when they were tucking into the wedding breakfast, and couldn’t be more fitting for a celebration by the sea. Luckily for me, The Works still stocked them – favours done and dusted!”

DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Claire didn’t envisage she’d have to travel so far to find her dream dress. “I found my Ronald Joyce Hudson gown browsing online,” she says. “Sadly, the boutique where I’d seen it didn’t have my size, so I rang other local stockists in the hope I’d find one – or something similar. My search proved fruitless, but just as I’d nearly given up I found one in a shop 120 miles away! Driving to Huddersfield, I was over the moon to discover it was, in fact, the one. A bargain due to it being a sample that needed fixing, I could afford to have bell sleeves added, as well as some rips fixed on the train. I can’t thank Aimee at Corsetry & Couture enough –she made it fit like a glove; and I felt like Frozen’s Elsa on the day!”
Dan, however, wasn’t as keen picking out something to wear. “Suit shopping was the one thing Dan was dreading, as he hates fuss,” continues Claire. “However, the Royal Quays Moss Bros store really helped him feel at ease. His suit was made to measure, with Dan choosing all the materials, buttons and thread. In keeping with our tropical theme, he also picked out a tiki lining for his jacket and waistcoat, before personalising the inside pocket with our names and wedding date. The restrictions were fully gone by this point, so there were no worries about date changes ruining his customisation!”
FOOD OF LOVE
The couple ensured there was an abundance of food for friends and family to choose from. “We were blown away by the selection available at Newton Hall,” says Claire. “We decided on canapés at the drinks’ reception to start with; then, not wanting to limit our guests to a set menu, mixed things up for the wedding breakfast by having a BBQ! It meant that instead of everyone being stuck inside on a warm May afternoon, they could sit out in the sun to enjoy their burgers and potato salad. We followed this with sticky toffee pudding, plus coffees and a selection of lovely local cheeses. But it didn’t stop there: after our first set from the wedding band, everyone was served mini fish and chip cones, pizzas, and nachos with a huge choice of toppings.”
The cake was also something that got Claire and Dan’s guests talking. “We ordered ours from a cake shop in Prudhoe that doesn’t usually cater for weddings,” says the bride. “However, their cakes and traybakes are always delicious and leave you wanting more, so I asked – and they delivered! We chose a two-tier cake with Lotus Biscoff and Rocky Road flavours. I still dream about that cake now! It was, pun totally intended, the icing on the cake to a day of fantastic food options.”
SING FOR YOUR SUPPER
Music was another important element to the couple’s wish-list. “We played Boyce Avenue’s cover tracks throughout the ceremony and breakfast,” says Claire. “If you haven’t heard of the band we recommend a listen – it’s a simple way to make the wedding more personal, but with no extra cost!”
Next up came the entertainment. “I’d seen numerous singing waiters and magicians at wedding fairs, but it didn’t seem right for us,” continues Claire. “I wanted something our guests wouldn’t expect, so asked a close friend of mine, who performs as a Drag Queen, to get involved. Miss Gloria Love waited until everyone had finished their sticky toffee pudding, exploding into the room with enormous energy singing Proud Mary. I’ll never forget looking around at a sea of surprised faces, feeling ecstatic because I’d achieved it. They loved every second!”
Claire had yet more surprises up her (bell) sleeves. “Dan’s jaw dropped when I started singing Eva Cassidy’s Songbird to him, which I used to sing to my late grandma,” says the bride. “He stood in the middle of the dance floor and looked straight into my eyes, while I did my best to fight back the tears. We then turned that raw emotion into a night of incredible dancing, hiring the fantastic House of Sax experience, who brought Ibiza all the way to Northumberland. Their mix of sax and bongos to a DJ set was the perfect end to our beach vibe wedding, and we wouldn’t change a single thing.”
CLAIRE’S TOP TIP
“Plans go wrong, but you won’t remember any of it! Instead, you’ll treasure the first time you see your other half, who it was that caught the bouquet, and who you danced the night away with.”

FRIENDS
Reunited
Jules and Gary met in 1979 – but it took 40 years for them to fall in love!
Images courtesy of Neil Denham
Jules
and Gary met at school, but there certainly wasn’t an initial attraction! “Gary was loud, obnoxious and argued with the teachers,” says Jules. “After sixth form we lost touch, not catching up until we found ourselves in the same school Facebook group nine years ago. By then I was a single parent, and Gary was married to his lovely wife. Tragically, she died of cancer a few years later, and our Facebook group rallied round to help Gary though this terrible time.
“Months passed, and Gary’s posts showed him slowly emerging from his grief, going to the odd gig or solo holiday. One night I was sitting down with a glass of red when a message from Gary popped up
on my phone. ‘You cheer me up with your banter and make me laugh, which is something that doesn’t come easily,’ it read. ‘I’m in Sunderland soon – would you like to meet for a drink?’ Aged 50, I couldn’t fathom whether I’d been asked out on a date, so had to check with my daughter! We met the next week, and Gary relocated to Sunderland from Scotland six months later.”
Gary popped the question on Christmas Day, 2021, in front of Jules’ kids and grandchildren. Setting the date of 26th September, 2022, they chose Woodhill Hall as their venue. Here, Jules tells us more about their day…
37 REAL WEDDINGS
Woodhill Hall ticked all our boxes, and The Olive House is a beautiful choice for ceremonies.
I’m a crafter, so for our table plan recycled wine bottles with new labels and fairy lights with our guests’ names on.
I sent our cake-maker pictures of what we wanted, and she certainly delivered. The cake, like a lot of the day, was bohemian and autumnal.
My brother, who passed away 13 years ago, spent most of his life in Holland. Orange is the region’s national colour, so in honour of him the colour became the theme to our day.
Looking online at local dress suppliers, I could see there was nothing ‘me’. I turned to The Little Seamstress, who designed my incredible bespoke gown.
Gary’s more traditional, so he chose a tuxedo, along with his groomsmen. I loved how our outfits summed up our personalities – me all bohemian and Gary all business!
38
My bridesmaids wore forest-green gowns, as it’s one of my favourite colours and complemented our theme perfectly.
We hired a fantastic string quartet, who began 15 minutes before the ceremony and played the entrance song, register signing and exit song.
Our magician, Martin Duffy, was a hit. He had the kids mesmerised – as you can see in this photo!
For the evening we also hired the band, Big Red and the Grinners. I saw them at a festival and fell in love with their style and professionalism.
A memory I’ll never forget is when the photographer and videographer took us, our bridesmaids and a few friends to some nearby fields to sing, dance and run about with smoke bombs!
As my son walked me down the aisle my two-year-old grandson, Max, followed in fast pursuit! The photos of him standing with us as we’re about to get wed are hilarious!
39 REAL WEDDINGS
We were so blessed with all our suppliers, including the video guys, who we had such a laugh with on the morning of our wedding filming our Eighties spoof music video!
After two sherries I forgot all about the dance sequence I’d planned last minute. Gary just went for it, while I encouraged everyone to join in!
Leave all the worries and nerves at the door when you walk down the aisle. Look at your partner, focus on each other – and just go for it!

PLANNING APPEAL
Engaged and ready to get organised? Here are eight North East suppliers you need to check out, pronto
www.edcharltonphotography.com
LANGLEY CASTLE HOTEL
“Choosing your venue and date allows you to organise everything else for your wedding, meaning it’s one of the first things you should do,” says Katie Livingstone-Evans from Hexham venue Langley Castle Hotel. “Try to picture yourself getting married at the venue you visit, as well as seeing if you have a gut feeling it’s right for you. You also need to bear in mind the logistics of guests getting there, and if accommodation is needed. However, at the end of the day it’s what the two of you as a couple want and need – if friends and family really want to be there then they’ll find a way!”
www.langleycastle.co.uk
ED CHARLTON PHOTOGRAPHY
“Most photographers only take on a certain number of weddings a year to ensure enough attention is paid to images and editing,” says Northumberland-based Ed. “That means their diaries fill up quickly! Find someone who fits your style, as not every snapper appeals to every person. I try to be as diverse as possible, but I know I have ‘my style’: candid and natural, which isn’t for everyone. I always recommend a coffee/Zoom with me and my wife, Tara, the videography wiz. This allows us to discuss your day and what exactly it is you’re after. Other than that, it’s pretty straightforward, and with us there’s no hidden costs to worry about.”

PLAN OUR WEDDING
“Planning a wedding is daunting, with hiring someone to help freeing up your time to enjoy your engagement,” says Sarah Lydon and Leanne Manson from Durham’s Plan Our Wedding. “A planner can negotiate with suppliers and venues, getting you the best deals and packages, and will be with you every step of the way. However, it’s important you don’t just choose the first you come across, as you’re going to be trusting this person with one of the most important days of your life. Have a consultation, seeing whether you felt truly ‘heard’, as well as factoring in if they really listened to your dreams and wedding day vision.”
www.planourwedding.co.uk
MUBYLEIGH HAIR & MAKEUP ARTISTS
“We’re taking bookings through 2023 and 2024, so I recommend securing your hair and make-up artists as soon as possible,” says Leigh Meakin from Durham’s MUBYLEIGH. “Do your research, looking for the artist right for you. You’ll spend hours together before you’ve even made it down the aisle, so it’s so important they’re someone you want to be around! Each of our bridal hair and make-up packages includes your trial at my home studio, discussing ideas to create your dream bridal look. Then, on the big day, we’re right by your side, on hand to help and support until you’re ready to leave for your ceremony.”
www.mubyleigh.com
MR MUNRO MENSWEAR
“We recommend grooms look for their suit six months before,” says Jess Robson from Newcastle’s Mr Munroe. “However, we also have grooms that leave it a lot closer to the wedding. We work by appointment only, giving grooms time to look at what we have and try on anything they want. It doesn’t mean they have to buy from us, but gives them the opportunity to ask questions without feeling rushed. Whatever you choose, it’s important you’re comfortable. You need to feel like you on the day, so we wouldn’t recommend something garish, if you normally wear quite plain clothes.” www.mrmunro.co.uk

EMMA HEDLEY JEWELLERY
“When considering bespoke wedding rings, I recommend allowing up to 12 weeks from your consultation to receiving the finished designs,” says North Shields-based Emma. “If, however, you’re choosing a design from our collection, it could still take around five weeks to make. When it comes to picking the right jeweller for you, it’s best to follow your heart, reading their reviews and seeing if you’re excited and inspired by their work. Your rings are the one item you and your partner get to wear and cherish every day, so choose something you love, and something that makes your heart sing when you gaze at it.”

“Your wedding ceremony sets the tone for your day, so booking a celebrant needs to be at the core of every other plan you make,” says Nichola Reeder from Stockton on Tees Rebel Heart Ceremonies. “Whereas a ‘traditional’ ceremony recognises a change in your legal status by becoming officially married, a celebrant ceremony tells your love story authentically as you pledge to spend the rest of your lives together. It can be as bold, creative and rebellious as you are, or simply as beautiful as you’ve always dreamed of – whatever floats your boat a celebrant an create it; as there are no rules!” www.rebel-heart.co.uk
PRIME ENTERTAINMENT
“Wedding entertainment should be organised at least a year in advance,” says Nigel Kirkup from Durham’s Prime Entertainment. “We find our service brings families and friends together, as it’s a social part of your big day where guests can catch up and chat while enjoying what you’ve chosen to hire. Ideally, you want something everyone can engage in, from our casino tables to F1 driving simulators. Whatever you go for, it’s better to book it for early in the evening, keeping the latter part of the day for dancing. Otherwise, no one will be able to concentrate once the DJ’s at full blast!” www.prime-ents.co.uk

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN
Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.
Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”
£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.
DAWN ‘TIL DUSK
Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL
Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS
This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.
L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.
The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

BAN THE BLOAT
Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day
One of the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding. There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.
CHEW PROPERLY
Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30
times to allow the gut to digest with ease.
EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS
Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.
START WITH SOMETHING BITTER
Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.
AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS
It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.
LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS
If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

BOHO BRIDE
We’re planning an informal boho wedding, so how should makeup complement this vibe?
For the perfect boho bridal look, focus on glowing, dewy skin that lets your natural beauty shine through. HAIR TODAY
What exactly happens at a bridal hair trial? Should I have more than one – and what questions should I be asking?
A hair trial is your chance to talk to your stylist about your ideas and inspiration, looking at mood boards and discussing how your wedding is going to look so we can create that perfect style. A great stylist will ask questions about your dress and your venue, as well as what time of day your ceremony takes place, to ensure your hair holds for as long as it needs to. While bringing along inspiration is a great idea, your final style will be tailored to your hair type, face shape and any accessories that you will be wearing on the big day. How many trials you have is completely down to personal choice, but usually the consultation should be in depth enough at the first visit that you get the look you love.

add a touch of bronze for a subtle, sun-kissed finish. When it comes to your eyes, stick to neutral shades using undertones that complement your natural colouring. I wouldn’t recommend going too heavy, but adding some fluttery eyelashes will give you an extra bit of impact that will help define your eyes in photos. Finish with a flush of colour on the cheeks and lips, leaning more towards a juicy, pouty lipstick, and a sheer, glowy blush.

SELF-CARE Soothing
Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day
56
It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.
That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.
Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.
The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.
For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.
There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.
Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.
“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”
After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.
Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.
Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.
I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.
For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.
At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.
“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”
Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.
I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.
As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”
Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.
Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.
As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”
Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. Styling advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.
HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?
Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?
Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.
Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.
Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.
Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.
HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT
Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.
Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your
waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.
HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?
When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas
TOP OF THE SHOTS
We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask to take?
The most important images to capture are those that will bring back memories of the emotion of your wedding in the years to come; the special moments you may or may not have noticed during the day. Of course, it’s also necessary to document those closest to you who’ve shared your celebration. However, family photographs don’t have to be formal; more relaxed images are just as good. Keep group shots to a minimum and to immediate family members – think parents, grandparents, siblings and your bridesmaids and groomsmen. This way the formal photos will not intrude too much into your day and allows more time to enjoy with guests.
Finally, a short period spent alone with your photographer will enable those all-important couple images to be taken, and also provide a brief period for you to spend in relative quiet compared with the rest of the day.

LOVE AND CARRIAGE
We want to hire a horse and carriage for the journey to our venue – but are there any things to think about before booking?
A horse cannot travel on any motorway, so plan your route accordingly. They are allowed on dual carriageways, as well as A and B roads, but the terrain must be taken into consideration – you need a ground surface that’s kind to their feet. You also need to consider their speed, around eight miles an hour, with our horses not being allowed to travel more than eight miles in total.
The size of the carriage is also worth remembering, as most only hold four adults, or two adults and three children. Our business offers three glass-fronted Landaus, in a choice of ivory, ivory with a black roof or black and ivory combined. We also have a choice of black or white horses, all of which come with a fully-trained carriage master and groom to assist you on the day. We also supply plumes, bows and ties to match the colours of your wedding day.

77 ASK THE EXPERTS
YOU CAN DANCE
Our guests range from tots to family members in their late Seventies. How do we get everyone on the dance floor?
This is actually a very simple question to answer – but it may not be the answer you expect. The music isn’t important; and neither is the venue, ambience or DJ (yes, I did say the DJ!). The one person to get everyone dancing at a wedding is you! You will find at a wedding people follow what the newlyweds do, so to get everyone on the dancefloor, no matter what age, go for a boogie yourself. Just wait – within seconds everyone will follow.
OK, so I did tell a little white lie when I said the music is unimportant – as you will want music you as a couple like to dance along to. This is no problem for us, as we have a bespoke online portal to help you choose those all-important song requests – and also songs you don’t like – to have everyone boogying on the dancefloor all night long.

TIME TO SHINE
How do we work out timings for our wedding transport?
TO BRIE OR NOT TO BRIE
We want a cheese wedding cake for our big day, but as it’s going to be held in August we’re worried about the heat. Can we still have one?
Of course you can, so long as you consider where to show it off. You don’t want it in the blazing sun, so position your cake in a light, fairly well-ventilated area on a sturdy surface. Any good cheese cake maker will also know how to properly stack their creation, but if opting for softer varieties it’s worth checking they’re planning on using small stilts to support the cheeses’ weight, so it doesn’t collapse during the day.
Apart from that, it’s pretty much all systems go, so start by having fun choosing a selection of cheese that not only complements each other in flavour, but also visually looks good together. After all, it’s going to be pretty well photographed on the day!
Sue Hooper, The Deli Around The Corner | www.thedeliaroundthecorner.co.uk
Every wedding is uniquely different, so we always suggest working backwards from the ceremony time. Our advice on multiple trips is to ensure your bridal party are all ready to be transported at the allotted time. This can be the hold up, as someone’s forgotten their lipstick, or the hairdresser is running behind. Superorganisational skills and communication is key when you’re arranging for not just you to get to the ceremony on time.
Traditionally the bridal party arrives last – think groomsmen, groom, bridesmaids then bride and the person giving her away. However, we do many variations, and our advice is whatever suits – as long as you’re all there for the wedding then that’s what matters most! We don’t often arrive late, which is the expectation for brides. We often find a very nervous bride waiting to be taken to the church or venue, so it’s our job to put her at ease and ensure she enjoys the ride and last minute preparations.

AFFAIR A grand
Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites
Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.
Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.
Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.
LUXE APPEAL
With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.
While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as
the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.
Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.
Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.
AND RELAX…
If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.
Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body
82
massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.
SIGHT SEEING
While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.
With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.
We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?
No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

A SPA DAY Santa needs
Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!
As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.
The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!
Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.
The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.
After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit
tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.
Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.
When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!
With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.
After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
