Ring-a-ding-ding

Welcometo the first issue of 2023! For those of you who received a ring underneath the Christmas tree or on Valentine’s Day – congratulations! We can’t wait to help you plan your special day.

If you’re unsure where to start planning, I found the best thing to do when I got engaged was to make a list of everything that you’d like to include in your day. From the big things like the venue and photographer down to the smaller details such as the cake topper and jewellery, write it all down. Now don’t panic if the list is a couple of pages long, not everything needs to be done right away and you can always change your mind. The list is there so you can see what items are important to you and to help you focus on one thing at a time. For some couples, the photographer may be the most essential supplier and for others, it may be the entertainment, however you envision your day is absolutely fine, just make sure you focus on what’s meaningful to you.

Once you have your list, you can begin planning. Always start with your venue, as this will dictate the day and time that you’re getting married. Once you have that set in stone, you can begin researching and booking the rest of your suppliers. To help inspire you, we’ve put together an issue focusing on the latest trends, with advice from local experts, must-have bridal fashion and news from across the North West.

If you’re about to tie the knot or have hosted a shoot, you can submit it at melissa.cullen@kdeventsandpublishing.com or www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

The Forest Side’s February Food Events are only available as part of an overnight package. Prices start from £529 and include a six-course menu, bed and breakfast and champagne on arrival. Wine pairings are available at an additional cost.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Inspired by Helen Dimmick is a new bridal boutique in the heart of Blackburn town centre.

Inspired offers a great collection of new and pre-owned gowns curated by Helen and her decades of retail experience in the bridal industry. Helen had a vision and passion to bring bridal retail back to Blackburn and as part of a two-phase development programme, has launched within the existing Ainsworth Jewellery premises to complement the footfall the store already attracts.

Helen Dimmick said: “The opening of a bridal boutique in-store is the natural next step for me, and I am delighted to see this come to fruition after all the research, designing and planning. Our offer will be two-fold and is all about choice – brides can browse the latest collections from well-known designers we are proud to stock, or they can bring pre-loved gowns or even family heirlooms for us to re-purpose to suit their wedding dress dreams.”

Community is at the heart of both the Ainsworth Jewellers and Inspired Bridal Boutique ethos, and Helen is delighted to be supporting the renowned and iconic, Gawthorpe Hall Textiles Collection, which themselves house the third largest costume collection in the UK. A percentage of the profit made from the sale of every gown will be gifted to the charity, and as a lasting legacy, brides will also be given Friends Membership to the Hall and will play a part in their archive story with a box used at the Hall labelled with the details from their wedding day.

Sarah Gallivan and her husband visited The Ro Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere

My husband and I love a trip to the Lake District so when we were invited to stay at The Ro Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere, we jumped at the chance.

With its relaxed atmosphere, stately home feel and chic interiors, it’s a beautiful backdrop for a break away and also for your special day. Sitting proudly on the hill overlooking Lake Windermere, you benefit from stunning views of the lake and another bonus is how close it is to the picturesque town and local attractions. We walked into the town a few times during our stay, and it was great knowing that you could take in the fresh air rather than having the hassle of finding somewhere to park!

ROOM WITH A VIEW

We stayed in one of the Super Lake View Balcony Rooms and what a treat it was. These spacious rooms are perfect for a mini-moon, boasting private three-metre-square lake view balconies as well as lounge areas to sit back and relax in. It snowed while we were there so although the snow-covered views were very pretty, we didn’t have it in us to brave the cold and sit outside, but it would be the perfect way to enjoy your morning coffee or evening glass of bubbly in warmer months for sure.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

We enjoyed a three-course meal in the hotel’s Lacu Restaurant and the next day we sampled afternoon tea with a glass of prosecco in The Ro Bar. The atmosphere was very chilled and welcoming and the food and drink were second to none.

There are large function rooms here in which to host your big day. The largest is The Ashville, which has high ceilings, a dancefloor, stage area and views from every angles. Alternatively, The Ballroom is another gorgeous option.

Pure gold

Bianca and Adam incorporated their love of pampas into their big day at St James Church and Whitehaven Golf Club

Images courtesy of CPD Photography

Bianca and Adam met at university in 2009. “We lived next door to each other and were studying the same course,” says Bianca. “Adam was interested in me straight away, but I kept him waiting, so we didn’t actually start dating until 2011. We have the same personality and values, and because we were friends first, we already knew loads about each other.”

The proposal was a complete surprise for Bianca. “We had just got back from the Gran Canaria, where we had been to my mum and stepdad’s wedding,” shares the bride. “We were in my mum’s living room when Adam got down on one knee after making me wait eight years for the ring!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 31

We originally wanted to get married in Las Vegas, but because of the pandemic, we had to change our plans. We decided to have our ceremony at St James’ Church Whitehaven and the reception at Whitehaven Golf Club. The club was the perfect setting for us as it seated up to 220 people and the Lake District fells looked stunning in our pictures.

Adam and I made homemade shortbread as our favours.

We found our table plan idea on Instagram. It was made from acrylic Perspex boxes with vases and floating candles and I loved the fact we had never seen it at a wedding before.

Our cake was made by my mother-in-law. We had a table full of goodies such as cake pops, geo hearts, cupcakes, personalised shortbread, and doughnuts. The bake was three-tiers and consisted of chocolate orange, sticky toffee, and carrot cake. The two single-tiered cakes were lemon with white chocolate buttercream and Victoria sponge.

I knew I wanted the centrepieces to be something that wouldn’t block people’s view, so we went for gold flower stands in different sizes. We added the pampas and greenery, and it was everything I ever imagined.

Behind the top table was a flower wall, and instead of a photo booth, we opted for a gold hoop with drapes and pampas. The guests loved it, and it made the perfect backdrop for their photos.

32

During the welcome drinks we had a local duo sing called The Northern Threads. The lead singer was enjoying himself so much that he asked if he could stay and party with us for the rest of the day! After the dessert had been served, we surprised our guests with singing waiters provided by Your Day & Your Way Music & Entertainment. Everyone was in shock when the lady dropped her tray and then started singing. Everyone was up on the dancefloor whilst they entertained us.

The bridesmaids and groomsmen were transported in a limousine, and we travelled in a cream Rolls Royce from A Touch of Class. Adam and the groomsmen wore matching tuxedos from Next. One of my best friends sang two songs in the church whilst we signed the register. You could hear a pin drop when she was singing. I wore a Morilee dress called Stefani from Hoops a Daisy. I chose this styled as I always wanted a low back, and it gave me the perfect hourglass figure. I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil with our initials embroidered on the bottom. The bridesmaids’ dresses were from ASOS. We went for a neutral colour to match the tuxedos, with a cowl neck and low lace-up back.
REAL WEDDINGS 33

Our main band was local Danny Dunnery. They played at our engagement party, so we knew we wanted them for our big day! Our guests loved them.

For our mini-moon, we went to Stella Island in Crete for five days. I planned it, and we didn’t want to leave. Our big honeymoon will be in America next year.

In the middle of Adam’s speech, he said ‘my wife’ and my friend Emma, who was stood at the bar, shouted the famous Will Smith Oscar line: ‘take your wife’s name out of your mouth’, and the room roared with laughter. Rheda Retreat, our event stylist, made the room look amazing and the management team at Whitehaven Golf Club even said they had never seen the venue look so good!

ALWAYSYou and me

Chloe and Dan opted for a neutral colour palette for their big day at Wyresdale Park

Images courtesy of Adam Tranter Weddings

36

Chloe and Dan met online through mutual friends. “We got on really well and clicked from the moment we met,” says Chloe. “It felt like we were meant to be. Our relationship blossomed, and Dan proposed in November 2019 in Venice outside St Mark’s Square, which was a total surprise!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Wyresdale Weddings is a stunning venue that I’ve followed for a couple of years on Instagram,” shares the bride. “I’d always wanted to look around it, and after attending our friend’s wedding in August 2021, it gave us the wedding bug, so we decided to start planning our day. We aren’t very traditional and weren’t fussed about having a church wedding and wanted something a bit different and more relaxed. We visited Wyresdale Weddings during an open day and fell in love with the place and knew it was where we wanted to host our special day. We loved that it was family run and all the staff were lovely when showing us around. We also adored how all the rooms were set up so that the day flowed perfectly.”

For their favours, the couple gave their guests scratch cards placed on white cards with funny quotes.

Chloe and Dan opted for a white table plan with gold metallic writing. “We had wooden trestle tables in three rows instead of round tables,” explains Chloe. “I saw a picture from a previous wedding that was held at Wyresdale Weddings, and I loved the look. We hired these from a company called Lancashire Event Hire.

“We didn’t have centrepieces as such but instead opted for white runners with long green foliage running down the length of them,” adds Chloe. “We placed white candles in gold holders on the tables, which were done by the talented Bluebells & Daisies. We finished the look with gold acrylic table numbers from Ginger Ray.”

Gemma from Bluebells & Daisies created the bride’s beautiful bouquet. “It was made up of wild country flowers, which included greenery, pampas and white English roses,” recalls the bride. “Gemma also decorated the ceremony room by placing ivy on the wooden beams and made an altar garland full of greenery and white flowers. We also had a company called Pampas By Post create a flower archway full of pampas and greenery that made a gorgeous backdrop for us to get married in front of.”

The couple chose a plain white Victoria sponge cake and 84 cupcakes from The Lytham Cake Company.

“We had wooden place names that I got from a company called Mark My Word,” reveals Chloe. “We decorated the aisle with glass cylinder vases with water and candles, which looked stunning, and chose a neon sign and stand from Emma Coppock Bespoke Weddings & Events, which went perfectly with the barn. We also hired a Mr & Mrs balloon online to go behind our chairs and organised a memory table with pictures of our loved ones who couldn’t be with us.”

The couple hired The Striped Kitchen to do their catering. “They were incredible,” says Chloe. “We chose goat’s cheese tarts with red onion and miniature old spot pork Yorkshire puddings for our canapés. Our main was a street food barbecue with burgers, chicken thighs, sausages, and sides.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I wore a dress called Jules by Allure Bridals, which I purchased at Brittany Ann Bridal,” shares the bride. “After trying on different options, I felt it suited me the best. As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one. I accessorised with a jewelled head slide from Halo & Co and a long veil, which had tiny crystals scattered all over it.”

Dan and the groomsmen chose blue checked suits from Slater Menswear. “It had a fine brown and champagne colour running through it,” explains Chloe. “It went well with their champagne-coloured ties and the bridesmaids’ dresses.

“The bridesmaids opted for champagne coloured multi-way dresses from Jacqueline Louise Bridal Ltd, which had a tulle fabric overlay on the bottom half,” continues Chloe. “I wanted them all to feel as comfortable as possible, so this was the perfect style as they could wear the top half however they wanted.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We went all out with our entertainment as it was a massive part of the day, and we wanted our guests to have the best time ever,” reveals Chloe. “Paul Flatley, Caricature Artist, was with us for two hours in the evening and was a massive hit with our guests, and there was always a queue for him. He was brilliant, and our friends and family loved taking home a keepsake from our wedding.”

Toby & Co provided games for the reception drinks. “Everyone adored this,” explains Chloe. “We also had singer, Jade Parr and a guitarist perform during the wedding breakfast, who were just amazing. We wanted a chilled vibe for the meal, and the songs they picked worked well. The second half of the set was more upbeat, with tunes to get everyone ready for the night. In the evening, Ash, the DJ from Six15 Group Ltd, played all the music we asked for and, in the evening, we had a bongo and saxophone player, who was fantastic. I would highly recommend all of these suppliers as they made our wedding perfect!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple felt incredible happy on their big day, as Chloe tells us: “We were in our own little bubble. All of our suppliers were absolutely brilliant and made our wedding truly memorable, and we can’t thank them all enough! The wedding co-ordinators at Wyresdale Weddings were brilliant and our photographers, Adam and Olivia, went above and beyond for us on the day to not only make sure we had the best time taking pictures but also that we got the best shots possible. All our guests commented on how lovely and amazing they were! Adam took us out on a boat for some pictures, which was a special moment for us. He made it so fun, and it was nice to have time for Dan and I to talk and take in the day.”

TOP TIPS

“The day goes fast, so try and take it in and enjoy the moment,” recalls Chloe. “For us the photographer and entertainment were the essential parts, so we knew we wanted to invest quite a bit of our budget on these. The day goes so quick and having pictures to look back on was really important to us, so we would highly recommend investing in a good photographer who you click with.”

HONEYMOON

“We had a mini-moon in Dublin after the wedding, which we loved,” says Chloe. “We’re going to have our proper honeymoon next year, but we just haven’t decided where to go yet.”

Love at FIRST BITE

Jenni and Mike met at a restaurant and have been inseparable ever since Images courtesy of Claret and Blue Photography

Jenni and Mike met in their local fast-food restaurant. “We exchanged numbers, and the rest is history,” says Jenni. “It really was love at first sight, and that was 17 years ago! We were lying in bed when Mike asked me to be his wife. We’re not traditional, so he didn’t get down on one knee and we went shopping for the ring the day after.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 43

Our reception venue closed down during the pandemic, but we later came across The Lowry. We’re so glad that we did as upon viewing the Compass Room, we were blown away by how stunning it was.

St Luke’s CE Church is a stunning building with a great history. It was the church were Emmeline Pankhurst, a political activist who organised the UK suffragette movement and helped women win the right to vote, got married at back in 1879. It was also the church where my children and I were christened. Sadly, it has been put on the at-risk register because it has a leaky roof and there is currently a fundraising effort to help fix it, so it was important for me to support the church.

Our favours were personalised love hearts, bottle openers and activity books and games for the children.

The table plan was a heart that I made from a pallet. We named the tables after our favourite albums from The Script and instead of using names for each person, we used headshots.

The cake was amazing! Jen at Daffodil Kitchen saved the day when we were let down by another business just three weeks before the big day. It was a wedding and birthday cake for Mike as we got married on his birthday. The theme was Leeds United, as that’s the team he supports, and Jen even made us a little referee to represent what Mike does in his spare time.

For the centrepieces, we chose ghost candelabra and flower bombs surrounded by tea lights.

To keep everyone entertained, we hired surprise singing waiters from Silver Service Singers and a photo booth from S And K Radiant Reflections. We also had caricaturist, Caricature with Attitude, and magician, Andrew Dean Magic, interact with our guests. Everyone loved the entertainment, especially Andrew, who blew people’s minds with his tricks and left our friends and family speechless.

I wore a House of Nicholas gown called 2307 from Bespoke Wedding Boutique. I saw it at a wedding show and knew it was my dress without even trying it on. It was elegant and reminded me of the dress that Princess Eugenie wore, which I loved. I had the bow on the front removed and replaced with a diamanté belt, and the neckline at the back lowered, so that the tattoo in memory of my nan was visible. I accessorised with a two-tier veil and a tiara.

My maid-of-honour and the oldest bridesmaid wore chiffon dresses with shawls, and the younger bridesmaids and flowergirl had matching gowns from Bespoke Wedding Boutique.

Mike and I were relieved to finally get married after postponing twice due to the pandemic. During that time, we had one venue close down, two venue dressers cease trading, a photographer sadly passed away, a cake maker close down, I survived bacterial meningitis while pregnant, and Mike’s mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The run-up to the wedding was very stressful to say the least but we were overwhelmed with happiness knowing we were surrounded by our nearest and dearest.

Mike and the groomsmen decided on check three-piece suits, but Mike opted for a pink tie and flower to help him stand out. We hired a bus from RM Buses to transport all of our guests from the church to the reception venue. I arrived at the venue in a horse and carriage provided by The Ostler Limited.

Seeing

We weren’t sure if Mike’s mum, Mary, was going to be well enough to attend, so having her with us on our big day was wonderful.

After we had our photos taken and were waiting for the transport to arrive, I turned around and noticed a white feather slowly floating down that landed on my train. I believe this was my nan’s way of telling me that she was with me on my big day, and I know she would have loved every minute of it.

We absolutely loved our honeymoon. It was our first holiday without the kids, and we certainly made the most of it.

How to plan the perfect wedding

You’reengaged – congratulations! Whether you’re at the beginning or end of your wedding planning journey, it can be stressful trying to put everything together. There’s so much to consider from the venue and theme to the dress and accessories, and so you might be asking yourself where do I start? Before you start surfing the internet for venues and supplies, sit down together with a cuppa and discuss what you want your wedding day to be. Whatever you decide will have an impact on everything else you do from here on in. Think about your overall vision. Is rustic bliss your vibe, or are you more the modern chic kind of couple? Perhaps you want to keep it classic and traditional. You may even want to go completely your own way and host a festival-style wedding in a field with a temporary structure such as a marquee or tipi for cover. All of these aspects will guide you towards the style of venue you should be researching. Crucial to this process is the budget and guest numbers, as one will very much dictate the other. You may want to invite 300 people, but are you willing and able to fund 300 wedding breakfasts? Be realistic about what you want to spend, settle on a budget and above all, stick to it.

Once you’ve booked your venue and have a date set, you’ll be thinking about your other suppliers. To help you create the wedding of your dreams, we’ve rounded up local companies and asked for their top planning tips.

BOOKING YOUR ENTERTAINMENT

Live musicians have a special way of exciting a crowd, and if you can find it in your budget to squeeze a band in, you shouldn’t think twice.

An awesome live band will make your day, and a bad one can have quite the opposite effect. Our main advice would be to not leave booking your entertainment until the last minute. Live music will create an atmosphere that your guests will remember more than anything and it will lift your wedding to the next level.

Professional bands are busy and can get booked up a few years in advance, especially on summer weekends, so if you find a band you love, snap them up early.

Whatever band you go with, make sure you do your research. Look at previous couples’ reviews, check out their social media pages and look through their website and promotional materials. You’ll instantly see if the

band are the correct calibre for your big day.

We’re a big believer at Jukebox that all the music should be performed live. Some bands perform with backing tracks, which, to me, doesn’t allow performers to interact and adapt with a crowd to keep your guests on the dancefloor.

Check they have the necessary certificates in place, especially PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) and PLI (Public Liability Insurance). Most venues will insist on seeing these and will stop your band from playing if they do not receive the documentation.

Remember, quality music isn’t cheap, but it will make a great day even more memorable.

PLANNING SOS 55

CHOOSING YOUR BIG-DAY FLOWERS

Once you’ve booked your venue, you can start looking for your florist as you’ll know the space you’d like to fill, the size of your wedding and the date it’s going to be taking place.

My biggest tip is to choose a florist whose work you truly love and ‘vibe’ with. It will make planning your flowers much easier as you’ll be on the same wavelength.

When it comes to budgeting, it’s usually said to give 10 per cent of your

overall budget to your flowers. If you want your blooms to make a big impact, you may consider putting more of your budget towards them.

By discussing your needs and wishes with your florist, they will be able to advise and utilise your budget to its fullest to create the perfect flowers for your special day.

Abbey from Fleurs&Ink www.fleursandink.co.uk

FINDING THE PERFECT JEWELLERY

Start choosing your accessories once you’ve decided on your wedding dress, as the style and colour of your gown may influence your decision.

If you’ve opted for a V-neck dress, then we suggest you go for a simple pendant.

A strapless or sweetheart gown can be accessorised with a choker or statement piece of jewellery.

Keep in mind that high necklines already have a lot of drama, so skip necklaces and opt for statement earrings or a bracelet instead. Less is more with busier gowns. A good rule to go by is the simpler the dress,

the bolder you can go with your accessories.

Jewellery shouldn’t overlap fabric and should lay on your exposed skin.

You may decide not to wear a necklace and instead opt for statement earrings but don’t forget about your hair accessories. Discuss your hair accessories with your hair stylist and make sure your accessories will work with your preferred hairstyle.

HOW TO PLAN AN AMAZING HEN AND STAG DO

Get an idea of the number of participants who are committed to doing an activity as early as possible. Bank holidays are often very busy, consequently, accommodation can become booked up very quickly, so make sure you book far in advance. Likewise, most hen and stag activity sessions happen in spring and summer, so it’s best to plan and book early to get your preferred date and activity.

Choose activities that suit everyone’s ability and comfort zone, so that everyone feels happy and confident.

Decide on the location that you want to go to for your accommodation and activities. Most of our activities at Adventure North West are in the

Coniston area of the South Lakes.

Have a plan for how you and your group will travel to and from your accommodation and activity locations, as public transport and taxi services can be limited within rural areas.

Be sure to budget for travel, activity costs and food and make sure everyone is on the same page money-wise.

Keep in mind that the weather can be very changeable, so it’s best to come prepared with the appropriate clothing and footwear.

Private group activity sessions work well for hen and stag parties, as the activity can be delivered in a bespoke way just for your group.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE PERFECT CAKE

Do some research before setting a budget as some embellishments and flavours will cost more than others. Once you’ve found a supplier, work with them to create a bespoke design for your big day. Tell them about your likes and dislikes and show them photos of other creations that have caught your attention. Remember, a bespoke option will cost more than a standard design, so factor this into your budget.

Flowers are a wonderful way of decorating your bake. Blooms can be carefully painted to look like a watercolour masterpiece, made using sugar or even sculpted out of icing.

Chocolate can be used to decorate your bake. Whether you choose a modern drip effect or a quirky half-and-half creation, your guests are sure to be delighted.

If you’ve decided against a traditional white bake, then ruffles are a fun alternative. Not only will it make the cake stand out, but it’s also a great way of incorporating your colour scheme.

Cake freezes perfectly, so if you have any leftover and it wasn’t frozen previously (check with your supplier), freeze it and enjoy it for months to come. You could even keep some for your first anniversary.

Cake-toppers are an opportunity for you and your partner to show off your personalities – have some fun with it, and don’t be afraid to go against tradition!

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

FUN AT THE FAIR

We’re having a carnival-themed wedding with lots of fun rides –how can we get creative with our wedding photographs?

A carnival-themed wedding sounds exciting! To capture all the fun, I would relax and let your photographer go around photographing everyone playing the games and going on the rides.

Set time aside for your photographer to follow you to your favourite rides so they can focus on you both playing and having a good laugh.

If the rides carry on into the evening, you can always do fun shots with flashes and lights. For example, your photographer could go in the carriage in front of you to catch a photo where all the lights are moving around you, but you are static in the photo. A Wurlitzer would be good for something like this and can create some amazing photos.

WINTER ROMANCE

I’m getting married next January and would love some couple portraits to treasure, but I’m worried about losing the natural light so early. Are there ways around this?

There is no doubt light can be tricky with winter weddings as the days are shorter, but it can also be the recipe for gorgeous soft winter light like Charlotte and Niall’s pictured here in December at The Wild Boar in Windermere. We took these at about 1pm and we caught the low winter sun through the trees, which was just beautiful. The natural winter haze gave a romantic, magical atmosphere and it really showed in the photos.

If possible, have the ceremony early on in the day. A dusk ceremony will not give you enough natural light for portraits afterwards. If an early service is not an option, you could arrange with your photographer to do the photos before the ceremony. Another tip would be to check the forecast to get an idea of when the sun will set that day, plan your photos and keep an eye on the time. Your photographer will help with this!

MY TYPE ON PAPER

My hubby-to-be and I are on a tight budget, but still want beautiful stationery on our big day. How can we spend our money wisely?

You can still achieve beautiful wedding stationery on a budget! A lot of stationery designers will have a portfolio of ‘house’ designs you can choose from, which are personalised with your details, but the design side of things is already done.

Remember, anything bespoke is going to cost more, but you can save money by utilising space. For example, instead of adding extra cards with details such as menus and transport, why not add it to the back of the main invite?

When it comes to on-the-day stationery, keep it simple. Does every guest need a menu at their place setting, or could you have one menu per table, perhaps in a photo frame? When thinking about welcome signs or table plans, consider having them printed like a poster or onto card to save the cost of printed boards, this also means they are recyclable too!

THE FOOD OF LOVE

Our big day is fast approaching, and we’re panicking about what food to pick. Do you have any advice?

Planning your wedding is an exciting time, of course, but it comes with some stress. Many elements of the wedding are down to your style as a couple, from the dress to the venue. However, when it comes to the food, you must consider what the guests will enjoy; and if you’re expecting a particularly high number of people, this can be tricky. Here, we’ve gathered some tips to help you create a fool-proof wedding menu: Sit-down meal for traditionalists – if you want a traditional wedding reception, then a sit-down dinner is the route to go down. However, creating a menu that will cater to everyone, from vegetarians to meat enthusiasts, can seem tricky. Thankfully, there are ways around this. Typically, there is only one option for a starter – so to ensure no one is left hungry, it’s a good idea to consider all dietary requirements and choose something vegan. When it comes to the main course, there are normally some options, with a vegan alternative given to those with dietary requirements.

Food vans: simple but effective – if a sit-down meal isn’t quite your style, or you simply don’t want to face the risk of your guests not enjoying their meal, hiring food vans is your best bet. Plus, you can include different cuisines and a variety of desserts.

Buffet for a wide variety – having a buffet is a great way to cater to everyone’s needs, particularly if you’ve got plenty of guests. A grazing board is not only a sophisticated way of implementing a buffet into your wedding reception, but thanks to the wide variety of Italian meats, cheese, olives, crackers, and fruit, you can rely on this to keep just about everyone happy. Plus, it makes a perfect option for a starter due to the snack size elements of the board.

PICK OF THE BUNCH

I want something a bit different for my wedding flowers. Do you have any suggestions?

Have you thought of felt? Felt floral wedding bouquets are a brilliant alternative to traditional fresh flowers, and in many circumstances, people wouldn’t know they weren’t real until they took a closer look!

For those who are more eco-conscious and are trying to have a sustainable wedding, felt bouquets are ideal as they won’t die, and you wouldn’t have to throw them away.

Our bouquets at The Alternative Florist are handmade-to-order using a high-quality wool blend felt, therefore you get to choose the colour scheme, the flowers (as you don’t need to follow the seasons), and you get to add your own scent as there won’t be any pollen to trigger allergies. You can be as creative as you want as they would be made bespoke to you and your partner.

Getty Images

Delicious desserts – You may have selected the perfect wedding cake for your special day, but a cupcake stand is an extra touch that you can incorporate into the buffet so that your guests keep going back for more. With this dessert option, you can offer various flavours – from red velvet, salted caramel, white chocolate, and much more!

Asprinkle of sage mixed with crisp white roses created the dreamiest setting for this styled shoot in the Lake District. Sitting between fells and fields Knott Estate is perfect for outdoor photos and romantic walks. Abi’s photography style fit perfectly, and her puppy did a great job of modelling in some of the images. The latest venue styling trends

YOUR WAY Your day,

If you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. With so many options available, this can seem like a daunting task, but the most important thing to remember is that any space can be transformed with even the simplest of details. To help give you some inspiration, we’ve asked local suppliers for their top tips on how to create three on-trend looks.

Celestial

“A celestial wedding theme is perfect for couples who admire dark, moody colours and star-like lighting. A galaxy-inspired ceremony backdrop is positively dreamy, with star-shaped pendant lights hanging from the ceiling to add the perfect celestial touch.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

Getty Images

“A navy and gold or black and gold colour scheme would work perfectly for this theme. You could have your table numbers in the shape of the moon or stars and a moon-shaped balloon arch to wow your guests.” – Leigh Hodgson from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

“Dark and various shades of blue and purple will look great incorporated into your table linens. You could continue the theme with star pendants, scattered on the tables.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

Getty Images

“Moon-shaped cake toppers placed in bottles will add light to the tables. You could also add 3D moons and stars to your welcome sign and lots of lighting around the venue to make it bright like the night’s sky.” – Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

VENUE STYLING 73

Rustic

“Carry an oversized bouquet filled with vines, greenery, pampas grass, and other botanical accents. Focus on using wildflowers and cheerful blooms, like daisies, sunflowers, roses, ranunculus, and poppies, to achieve that farmer’s market-inspired look.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

“It’s crucial to choose a venue that complements your wedding theme. A barn can be the perfect venue for a rustic theme. For the ceremony, choose hayebales seating covered with assorted quilts and blankets. You could also have a wooden ceremony arch personalised with greenery and garden-inspired flowers.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

“The key elements for a rustic-styled wedding are lots of hessian, greenery, wood and lights. For example, wooden log slice centrepieces with hessian-wrapped jars, eucalyptus and bottle lights are always a winner.” – Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events. https://makingmemoriesphotography12. zenfoliosite.com/home

www.thekensingtonphotographer.co.uk and www.instagram.com/blossomandbowseventhire

“Colours such as terracotta or burgundy work really well when planning a rustic wedding as the colour intensity is deep and will instantly add a richness to the room, giving you a warm and inviting atmosphere. When adding tapered candles to the tables, don’t just add one colour, mix these up and add different heights and colours to make your tables pop.” – Victoria from Blossom & Bows Event Hire.

Getty Images

“When working with your florist, try and avoid peonies or flowers that sit neatly in your bouquet, instead go for blooms such as roses, hydrangeas and lots of trailing foliage.” – Victoria from Blossom & Bows Event Hire.

Getty Images www.thekensingtonphotographer.co.uk and www.instagram.com/blossomandbowseventhire

“Lanterns are a versatile detail that can decorate almost anything. They can be included on the reception tables, down the aisle, venue walkways, tent entrances, staircases, and more.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

https://makingmemoriesphotography12.zenfoliosite.com/home and www.facebook.com/AllThatGlittersUK12

“Rustic chic is all about creating a setting that is laid back and effortless. Before the wedding, venture out and collect pine cones. These are excellent as you can spray them to your desired colour or keep them natural and they can be added to the bottom of your centrepieces or used as place card holders.” – Victoria from Blossom & Bows Event Hire.

“Hessian-wrapped chairs and cutlery holders, and wooden ladders decorated with greenery, hessian jars and photo frames make a perfect addition to any rustic wedding.” – Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

Bridgerton

“The Bridgerton-inspired theme is utterly fabulous. Couples are finding inspiration from the so-romantic tale of a lady and her duke. From regency-inspired accessories and colourful gardens to blooming bodices, couples are loving the drama and whimsical details. Bridgerton is a no-brainer for a wedding theme.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

“Go for lots of candelabra and add a mixture of light blue and white florals to make your décor pop. It’s also a must to have some sun umbrellas in the mix somewhere.” – Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

“Hire a Georgian wedding venue or some sort of historical building with great features such as the facades, entrance hall and ceiling. Add wisteria flowers and roses in an archway for the entrance and opt for hand-tied bouquets in shades of lavender, blush, peach, and touches of pale blue.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

“Create a regency pastel blue paired with a white table garland of hydrangeas and foliage flower arrangements on a banqueting style table. Tapered pale blue and white candles, gold-rimmed chargers, gold flatware, cut crystal stemware, and velvet blue napkins will all tie in beautifully.” – Bunmi from Boomz Events.

“Incorporate the theme into your stationery, and have your menus written in beautiful calligraphy. Finish the look with bottle lights and candles to light up the room at night and add a romantic touch.” – Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

“Adds lots of florals throughout the venue and into your centrepieces, such as floral-filled martini glasses.” –Leigh from All That Glitters Weddings & Events.

Q&AFashion & Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

LUSCIOUS CURVES

I have an hourglass figure that I want to show off on my big day. What style of dress would you recommend?

Having an hourglass figure is wonderful as you can wear pretty much any dress shape you like. However, if you really want to highlight your curves, look for something form fitting, such as a slim evening style or a fishtail which will accentuate your waist and hips. Any fabric will look great, so you could go more vintage with soft lace or glamourous with beading and satins.

Adding a belt will help highlight your waist and is something you can add to a lot of styles in your chosen colour or you could switch it up for the evening and go for something with a bit of sparkle. Our Mila and Farrow gowns are perfect for this!

Always remember that you need to feel comfortable in your dress, so as much as you want to show off your fabulous figure, you still need to feel like you. Whatever you choose, it will be beautiful.

SKINCARE PRO

I have acne-prone skin, and I’m worried about having a breakout just before the big day! How can I ensure my skin is in good condition in the run-up to the wedding?

This is a worry for many brides, but having a simple and consistent skincare routine can help keep breakouts at bay. Cleanse once a day in the evening or double cleanse if you’re wearing make-up. At night use chemical acids to exfoliate instead of scrubs, PHA & AHA’s are suitable for sensitive skin and exfoliate the top layer, whereas BHA’s penetrate deeper preventing a build-up of oil that clogs pores. Use an acid option once a week to start with, and always use SPF 50 the next day.

Don’t forget to moisturise twice a day using clear gel-based oil-free moisturisers. Remember, you don’t need to have lots of different brands and products in your routine.

Avoid using new products or starting new treatments, such as facials one month before the big day. It’s best to start facials six-12 months in advance to avoid any potential breakouts or allergic reactions.

Avoid wearing too much make-up in the run-up to the wedding, even leaving your skin bare for seven days will give it a break.

Be mindful of eating too much sugary and fried foods as these are known to trigger imperfections in your skin.

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.

We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

94
Sarah Gallivan samples a taste of the Mediterranean on the dreamy island of Crete

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95

THE RIVERDown by

Editor Claire Ridley was invited to The Great House in Sonning, part of the Coppa Club collection of hotels and restaurants, that resides on the river

Thissanctuary nestled in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Thames is ideal for honeymooners, and their four-legged friends and children are also welcome for those wanting to book a family-moon. The tranquil, back-to-nature bolthole, a former Elizabethan coaching inn has some famous neighbours – Hollywood movie star George Clooney and wife Amal live in this quaint village tucked away in the Berkshire countryside.

DO NOT DISTURB

There are 49 individually designed rooms and suites with The Coach House Apartment located in the courtyard being the hotel’s best offering for newlyweds which became my home-from-home for the night. It’s a quirky split-level suite with a separate TV room that doubles up as a second bedroom, perfect if it is a family-moon you’re after. A highlight for me was the large roll-top bath – I dived straight in!

A FOODIE HEAVEN

At the heart of this boutique hotel is the swish Coppa Club clubhouse. The brand is well-known for providing the very best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge all combined into one setting with a private members club feel, without the fee. Guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night nibbles with riverside views in the restaurant, bar and snug area decorated with contemporary comforts and vibrant pops of colour.

Those passionate about food will love the extensive menus including the all-day, weekend and non-gluten offerings plus grills, grazing plates and sourdough pizzas - a takeaway menu is also offered. Being practically vegan, I tucked into the mouth-watering Coppa burger made with a delicious plant-based patty and cheese served with skinny fries. Other highlights on the menu were the chalkstream trout and the 10oz rib British steak on the bone. The buckwheat and rye pancakes were the perfect way to start my day the following morning at breakfast.

WHAT’S NEW?

The latest addition are the cosy igloos perched outside the large impressive glass-covered terrace lining the garden leading to the river. The best seat in the house, they provide private dining all year round for up to eight people and there are even blankets provided for the chilly evenings.

MADE FOR ROMANCE

Memories can be made at this idyllic, award-winning wedding venue that’s licensed for up to 100 guests for the ceremony. The Coppa Club chefs have created a collection of wedding breakfast menus and the flexible event space can host up to 200 guests for the evening party. The wedding couple can arrive by boat and will receive a complimentary night in the River Suite, plus a unique code for their guests to book inline.

BOOK IT: The Great House, Coppa Club offers a cosy double room from £85 per night. Deluxe doubles are available from £115 per night. www.greathouseatsonning.co.uk; 0118 969 2277. www.facebook.com/WeAreCoppaClub www.facebook.com/greathousesonning www.instagram.com/coppaclub www.instagram.com/the_great_house
