Love at first bite

Whetheryou’re a regular reader or newly engaged, welcome to our summer issue. As always, our June/July issue is full of inspiration, but my favourite part is the catering feature. I look forward to writing it every year, even if it does make me incredibly hungry afterwards! When I got married last year, we went back and forth about what to have for our wedding breakfast and reception. My husband (it still feels weird saying that) loves anything hot and spicy, while I can’t get enough of anything sweet. After talking to our family, we decided to go for a two-course barbecue so that there would be something to please all of our guests.

If you’re struggling to find the perfect company or cuisine, start by searching online and looking in magazines for inspiration. Before you commit, look at their past work to see if they can create the menu that you’re after. It’s also important to read their reviews, see if they’re in your price range and check that they’re available on your date. To meet some of the best local catering companies and get heaps of inspiration, head over to our catering and drinks feature on page 49.

If you’d like to share your big day or a styled shoot with our wonderful readers, you can submit it via our website, www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or by emailing melissa.cullen@county.wedding.

Take inspiration from the anticipated movie release of Barbie with these fun, flirty styles, plus something pink for your bridesmaids.

Wondering what you should serve your guests at your wedding breakfast? Check out our catering feature for heaps of inspiration.

AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHY

Glimmering Sparkle Weddings has been voted ‘Best Photographer in the North West’ by Hitched for the second year running. The duo have also received a LUXlife Magazine Global Wedding Award for ‘Best Contemporary Photography Team’ – congratulations!

“We think being a team is the single most significant difference between us and other photographers as both of us provide the coverage at any wedding,” says owners Kat and Greg. “We work each image individually to get the most out of each capture and although it does take a bit longer to process the footage, which is reduced down to the best 300-700 images depending on the wedding, the result is a set of images that couples will enjoy coming back to. Each wedding is different and with this in mind, we’ve looked at all the options our couples can choose from and moulded them into an instant service, which we believe to be the first of its kind offered anywhere in the UK by photographers. Much like when choosing car insurance, couples can choose what they want and submit it via our website to receive an email with their quotation. The best part is that they’re able to do it using their smart devices, in their own time, in the comfort of their own home and without having to talk to a rep.”

Visit www.glimmeringsparkle.co.uk for more information.

A MAGICAL PERFORMANCE

Wedding planning can seem endless, and as the day gets closer, many couples will be thinking about their entertainment. MagicALEXcellencE (the magic of Alex D Fisher) offers close-up and cabaret magic and has recently launched a new Wedding Hosting Service.

“Those of you looking for a wedding reception that people will recall for months to come will naturally be anxious about scheduling,” says Alex. “As your wedding host/MC, I will not only make all the announcements and introductions at the key stages of your day, but I will also bring a special blend of award-winning comedy magic to your reception. I will create a relaxed vibe that will bring your guests together and give everyone plenty of laughs as well as mind-blowing gasps. I combine my magic and MC duties to ensure a truly memorable and smooth-running day, which will allow you to relax and enjoy yourselves.”

Yolanda and Jordan opted for a black and white theme for their big day at Hidden River Barn

Images courtesy of Edward D Jones Photography

Yolanda and Jordan met in 2013 in a nightclub. “He was absolutely obsessed with me,” laughs Yolanda. “After six months, I decided to go on a date with him, and here we are nearly 10 years later! Jordan proposed while we were away for his 30th birthday in Canada. We were at the top of Whistler Mountain when he asked me; it was a massive surprise! He even had a custom engagement ring made, which was stunning!” Here Yolanda shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

21 REAL WEDDINGS

We were looking at staying the night at Hidden River Barn because its cabins reminded us of Canada, and when we realised they had a wedding barn, we knew it was the perfect place for us.

We decided to have two long tables and an intimate top table. Bramble & Bloom decorated these with greenery, white roses and pampas runners.

For our favours, we gave our guests a scratch card each and individual thank you cards.

Jordan and I dressed the venue and made it feel like our own. We used pampas clouds, a sweet cart, a beer pong table, pillar candles and glass cylinder jars.

22
Our cake was a three-tiered drape effect from The Little Cakery.

Jordan

We had an owl drop the rings during the ceremony, they then stayed for pictures and so people could hold them.

I wore a Martina Liana dress from Goldie’s Bridal. After watching Say Yes to the Dress for many years, I knew I wanted a Martina dress. From the leg split to the detachable straps and sleeves, it was simply perfect. I had a custom-made veil in the same fabric as the train and a mini version of the dress made for my little girl by Diva Designs For You. To finish the look, Joanne Nichol Hair Stylist made signature pearls that I slotted in my hair that were very similar to the ones on my Jimmy Choo shoes.

To keep everyone entertained, we had a live singer who stayed for the canapés. We also had a sax player who came just as dessert finished, and the dancefloor was bouncing all night long!

It was the best day ever from start to finish, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if I could!

chose a beige suit from Woven Durham that he had altered to incorporate black touches. The bridesmaids opted for black dresses that had a slit in the leg to match mine.
23 REAL WEDDINGS

We entered to Crazy In Love which all our guests thought we planned out, but we only decided 30 seconds beforehand. It was a hit, and so many people have said it was amazing!

For our honeymoon, we are heading to Miami and Florida Keys and are so looking forward to it! Florida Keys was a place I visited with my grandad, and I’ve been dying to go back and take Jordan with me.

FIRST ATswipe Love

Like most modern couples, Amy and Jake met online and their relationship quickly blossomed Images courtesy of Fish 2 Photography

26

Likemost modern couples, Amy and Jake met online. “It was 2015, and I had just downloaded the famous Tinder app,” says Amy. “After many swipes, Jake and I were a perfect match. After months of talking as friends, we never thought we could make the distance work or even be able to meet until one day my mum said: ‘Why don’t you go on a date?’ They were words I never thought my mum would say, but I decided to ask the question. We set a date and met up in Manchester. With Jake being a little bit hungover after a previous night out, he wasn’t the most impressive catch, but he did something right. Many months later, Jake decided it was time to ask me to be his girlfriend while we were watching some fireworks. I agreed, hoping that one day he would ask me to be his wife.

“A few years later, after I had graduated from university, Jake took me to my favourite holiday destination, The Lake District,” adds the bride. “Whilst travelling to our hotel, Jake stopped at Waterhead, complaining of a cramp in his leg from driving. We parked up, and it was safe to say I wasn’t very impressed at the price of parking or that we had to stop early, but I took it all in my stride, and we went for a walk around Waterhead Park. We stopped at a little beach on the shores of Lake Windermere. I was taking pictures, and when I turned around, Jake was on one knee asking me to be his wife. All Jake could say was: ‘Will you marry me?’ The tears started, and I struggled to say an answer, but I eventually said: ‘Yes’. We spent the rest of the day visiting places around the Lake District and our favourite restaurant for tea. Three years later, we became husband and wife.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“We were on holiday in the Lake District trying to find the perfect venue,” explains Amy. “After looking online, we decided to go for a venue with a jetty leading onto Lake Windermere and beautiful views from every angle. We wanted to use natural materials and local businesses where possible, so for our favours, we chose Kendal cake hearts because they are one of Jake’s favourite things. We also gave each guest a personalised pack of love hearts and a beautiful wooden place name, which they took home at the end of the evening.

“We opted for an e-shaped table as we thought it would be a cosier set-up,” continues Amy. “We decided to name each table after one of our favourite places in the Lake District. We found it harder to find a pre-made seating plan because of the shape, so we made it ourselves using brown kraft paper, twine, a picture frame and mini pegs. In the centre of each table, we used signs to represent places that meant something to us. Each name was engraved onto a wooden sign created by Jake’s dad. The base of each sign held a handmade decorated jar, gypsophila and a picture of Jake and I.”

After finding Willow & Fig through a wedding show, the couple decided to use their equipment and accessories for their wedding. “They provided the beautiful Chiavari chairs and hessian table runners,” recalls the bride. “This meant that on the day, Carlie (the head of Willow and Fig) organised everything, and we did not have to meet several suppliers as we were getting ready. After speaking to Carlie, she could picture exactly what we wanted and she did not disappoint.

“The bridesmaids had beautiful gypsophila bouquets and I had a neutral bouquet full of pinks and whites to complement the girl’s dresses,” continues Amy. “We knew we wanted to keep our budget small, but flowers were a very important part of my vision and I knew I wanted to have real blooms on my wedding day.”

The cake was made by Jake’s mum. “We chose a simple design, made with vanilla sponge and filled with buttercream and strawberry jam,” remembers Amy. “The cake was decorated with sprigs of gypsophila, fresh fruit and Lego sheep. We love Lego, and my favourite animal is a sheep, so our fantastic photographer gifted us some Lego sheep after we first met, and we knew it had to be a big part of the day. It was safe to say the cake looked amazing, tasted fantastic and was decorated perfectly!

“Most of the decorations were bought from various shops and some of the larger signage was from Mally’s Crafts Limited,” adds the bride. “We looked for wooden accessories and used crates filled with blankets, glow

27 REAL WEDDINGS

sticks and flip-flops as extra gifts for our guests. Jake’s dad, Andrew, created a wedding postbox from a letterbox and a piece of driftwood found on our favourite beach. Everything that was bought or made was important to us, and we loved getting crafty before the day. We also purchased a ladder which was sanded down to create a rustic effect and decorated with jam jars, battery-operated tea lights and pictures of us.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I wore an ivory, asymmetric draped ballgown with pockets by Sincerity Bridal,” shares Amy. “It wasn’t what I’d ever imagined wearing, but after trying it on, I knew it was the one. I had always dreamed of looking like Belle from Beauty and the Beast, and this dress reminded me of that. The simplicity made me love it even more and the detail on the bust meant it pulled in my waist. The best thing about it was the pockets! We added a beautiful diamond-styled belt to finish off the look, and as I don’t wear heels, I wore white plimsoll shoes decorated with diamonds. The look was finished off with an ‘I do’ bag, a jewelled hairclip and a beautiful necklace that Jake bought for me.”

Jake and the groomsmen chose navy three-piece tweed suits from Moss Bros with light pink ties, pocket squares and brown shoes.

“My bridesmaids went for beautiful, sequined pink dresses from Quiz,” explains the bride. “They styled it with diamond headpieces and a choice of their own silver shoes. The dresses perfectly matched our colour scheme, and the girls looked stunning.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We spent time creating a playlist of all our favourite songs for the evening reception,” recalls Amy. “Every guest had a song request card with their invite and all of those songs were added to a playlist. We bought small party lights, which the venue kindly allowed us to use on their speakers to create a party atmosphere. We loved that we could dance the night away to our favourite music while keeping the wedding small and intimate.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“Surprisingly, we both felt very calm on the morning of the wedding,” shares Amy. “It was everything we had dreamed of, and we knew we had to make every second count. It was extra special when Christina, our photographer, took us to the jetty for photographs. As we were there, we loved looking at our favourite place, and when a boat of tourists passed us waving and cheering, we felt lucky to be where we were.

“My dress came undone as I was walking down the aisle,” laughs the bride. “I noticed instantly and started to mouth to Jake that my dress was undone. Our amazing photographer realised there was a problem and quickly came to my rescue. There was also a missing speech during the ceremony. My mum had given my best friend, Sam, the speech and not knowing which part of the day it was for, she put it safely in her daughter’s pushchair. When it was time to read the speech, Sam started to run, and everyone thought she was leaving until she came back with the speech!

“It was the best day of our lives because of everyone around us,” adds Amy. “We cannot thank everyone enough for their support throughout the planning process and the amazing people we were able to meet along the way. Christina, our photographer, was the most wonderful person and saved me when I had a mishap with my dress and my hair stylist, Lisa, kept me calm and helped me to relax and enjoy the preparations on the morning of the wedding.”

REAL WEDDINGS 29

JADE AND MARTIN The tale of

Jade and Martin incorporated their love of Beatrix Potter into their big day at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa

Images courtesy of Mark Battista Photography

Jade and Martin were introduced through mutual friends.

“Martin gave me a lift to a festival,” says Jade. “Later on, when my car needed looking at, our friend put us back in contact as Martin’s a mobile mechanic. We hit it off right away, and it was as though we’d known each other for years. We were practically living together after a couple of months of dating.”

Martin asked Jade the big question in November 2021. “It

wasn’t a fancy proposal, but it meant a lot to me as I wasn’t expecting it,” shares the bride. “He sat next to me on the sofa and handed me a box with the ring in and asked if I would marry him. Of course, I said yes! He then told me that the ring had been in his wardrobe for a week, and I couldn’t believe I never spotted it.”

Here Jade shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

31 REAL WEDDINGS

Martin introduced me to camping and fishing, which I never thought I’d enjoy, but it turns out I love it! We like going and spending time with each other in Windermere, so getting married there was really fitting. We picked Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa as it was right opposite the lake where we fish, and we loved how beautiful the hotel and surroundings were. Growing up, I’ve always been fond of Beatrix Potter, so getting married in a location that she was known for ticked all of our boxes.

We hired Chiavari chairs and a white blossom canopy tree which we placed behind our sweetheart table. We also had bathroom vanity baskets filled with the essentials and a flip-flop basket, glow sticks and inflatable instruments which added a bit of fun to the evening entertainment.

For our centrepieces, we chose glass jars and figurines which we placed on log slices surrounded by eucalyptus and tea light holders.

The cake from Sugar Ruffles was a tree effect with our initials carved in the middle. We decorated it with white roses and added two deer to the top. Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa provided the catering, which was absolutely fantastic, especially the roast sirloin Cambrian beef. Our tables were named after Beatrix Potter and the characters that she created, such as Peter Rabbit.
32

My gown was called Bianca by Justin Alexander from Bride 2 Be Boutique. I initially wanted a fishtail silhouette, but as soon as I tried my dress on, I knew it was the one, especially because it made my mum cry. I wanted to still be somewhat elegant, so I wore a pearl bracelet and my great grandma’s earrings that she wore on her wedding day.

The bridesmaid chose Ever Pretty dresses in a sage colour with silver kitten heels.

We both welled up when we saw each other at the ceremony and didn’t think it would be possible to feel any closer.

Martin and I hired Andy B Events for the wedding breakfast. He got everyone dancing and waving their napkins around. Andy also recommended Girl On Sax, who he arranged on our behalf, to come and play three different sets in the evening; she was a massive hit with our guests.

The whole day was great, and there were too many wonderful moments to mention. We loved having our photos taken on the jetty, being really looked after by Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa and everyone getting up and dancing during the wedding breakfast.

33 REAL WEDDINGS
SG Menswear provided Martin and the groomsmen’s suits. They chose grey options with sage green ties, and Martin opted for a chequered waistcoat to help him stand out.

Seeing and hearing Martin’s speech on the day really touched me, as did my sister’s speech which I wasn’t expecting her to do. My mum and dad made the majority of the wedding happen, from running errands to making the wonderful décor.

We only realised on the day that we had forgotten the Flopsy Bunny figurine for one of our centrepieces, so my grandad had to drive to the Beatrix Potter shop in Bowness just to be told they didn’t have any! Thankfully he was kind and drove over to Hawkshead, where he managed to find one.

We booked a mini-moon to Wales the weekend after the wedding in a glamping pod with a hot tub, which was amazing.

Our top tip for any couple about to get married is to relax and enjoy every moment as it does go by quickly. Consider a sweetheart table as it’s a great opportunity for you both to soak everything in.

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

As our wedding day gets closer, I’m starting to worry about the possibility of bad weather. How do we prepare for this and make sure we still get gorgeous images?

Don’t worry too much about the weather, as there are ways to get gorgeous images come rain or shine. Start by asking your photographer if they have umbrellas and flashes they can bring along, just in case. If you need to buy some, white brollies work the best as they fit any colour scheme.

At your final meeting with your photographer, discuss wet and dry weather options for your big-day photos and the logistics of your venue.

Lights are a great way to change any space and get gorgeous photos; even the smallest room can be transformed with lights.

Lastly, just relax. The weather will be what it will be, but if you try not to worry and enjoy your special day, your photographer will take care of the rest. You’ve hired them because you love their work, so put your trust in them.

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND What jewellery trends are popular at the moment?

At Devotion Jewellery, we have noticed that white jewellery is staying popular. We always recommend platinum for engagement and wedding rings, as it is naturally white, 95 per cent pure (the safest setting for diamonds) and will never need re-plating like white gold.

We have seen an increase in different shaped diamonds, such as teardrop and emerald cut, with a halo setting or diamond set shoulders to add some extra sparkle. Also becoming increasingly popular are lab-grown diamonds, offering all the qualities of a natural diamond at a more affordable price range, allowing for bigger and higher quality diamonds.

For everyday jewellery, silver is still on-trend, with layered necklaces and drop earrings being purchased.

Bolder statement rings and pendants are becoming popular again, in silver, or gold plated, set with semi-preciouscoloured stones, perfect for complementing a stylish outfit. The jewellery market for men is very much centred on rings, and we are seeing more of our clients choosing rings with subtle and classy patterns, predominantly in platinum and argentium.

We’re also receiving a lot more enquiries for pre-owned luxury watch brands such as Rolex and Omega.

For the stylish gents, there is definitely a return to wearing classy cufflinks, usually in silver, either engraved or set with semi-precious stones.

A MOMENT IN TIME

We’re both camera shy and anxious about photos on our wedding day. Can you offer us some advice?

These are some of, if not the most important photos you’ll ever have, and it’s completely reasonable for you to want them to look amazing. Most of my wedding couples would say that they’re camera shy when we meet up for their pre-wedding photos, so please know that you’re not alone in feeling this way. During the shoot, we will walk around a bit and chat about the wedding, I will give some light direction and snap away as those lovely natural moments unfold.

In my experience even the most camera-shy couples are relieved when they see how relaxed the pre-wedding shoot is, and they end up looking forward to their wedding photos. Having that relationship with your photographer really helps you to ease up so they can capture you at your best.

You put so much effort into every detail and the photos will document all of that and will hopefully end up being printed in an album or hung up in your home, so it’s worth putting a bit if time into a pre-wedding shoot to settle those nerves.

EXPERT ADVICE 41

TREND SETTER

We’d like our big day photographs to be timeless with a few fun extras. What’s set to be the next big trend in the world of wedding photography? Wedding photography is moving away from posed and stiff images to a more natural and candid style. This will allow your personalities to shine through, making each image unique, showing a true, authentic reflection of your day.

I love the candid style as I get to capture natural moments that show the joy and emotions of the wedding, along with moments that would normally get lost or missed.

Another trend is smoke flares, these add a unique element to the images and are always a lot of fun.

PICTURE THIS

How can we ensure our photographer is the right fit for our big day?

When planning your wedding, you need to do some research into who you are booking. For example, are they within your budget? Is their style for you? Can you build a relationship with them?

The wedding industry is full of talented suppliers with different skills who cover various areas. When booking your photographer, they need to be reliable, friendly and up for having fun on your wedding day. You could hire ‘the best’ photographer out there, but they may not have good social skills.

Before booking your photographer, follow them on social media and meet with them and make sure you are 100 per cent happy before making the deposit.

PERFECT PALETTE PICKS

What flowers would be suitable for our summer wedding?

Summer is a perfect time to get married, as the flowers are in abundance and there is plenty of choice. Embrace the season; roses are at their best as are British wildflowers, which are a great way to soften and add lovely texture to your florals. Look for blooms such as sweet peas, delphinium, stocks, cosmos and nigella, to name a few. They come in a variety of intoxicating colours and scents. If you like pinks, think about adding hints of light blue, as it will bring a magical touch to your colour palette.

The choices are endless, but try and utilise the best of British blooms during this time, as nothing quite beats the look that they give.

Catering and drink ideas for your big day

Deciding on the food and drink for your big day can be a difficult task, between finding a cuisine that everyone will like, catering for dietary requirements and looking for seasonal produce, it can be overwhelming! To help you decide on a showstopping menu, we’ve asked local suppliers to share their seasonal suggestions and top tips…

Winter

“Fire-roasted root vegetables are the perfect cosy winter dish. Try slow-roasting carrots and beetroot together, baste with balsamic vinegar then serve with smoked salt for an aromatic finish. These would go perfectly with pigs in blankets!” – Eloise from Smoke and Steel.

“Bleak and harsh as it may be, winter is nature’s invitation for us all to slow down, nourish ourselves and rest our weary bones. We recommend leaning into the more lackadaisical pace of life and indulging in slow-cooked, nourishing dishes to stave off the winter blues. Think venison ragu served with buttery cauliflower puree and cavolo nero; slow braised feather blade with rich mashed potato and greens; buttered sprouts with chestnut puree and pancetta; chestnut mushrooms with spelt and pecorino or smoked creamed leeks with white fish and broccoli served with almonds and romesco.” – Jess from Tender Cow.

“One of our popular winter wedding drinks is homemade eggnog. This is a seasonal favourite and can be served hot or cold.”

– Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“When winter is here, what’s better than a menu consisting of warming and wholesome food, starting with a mug of hot mulled wine? A slow-roasted free-range turkey with traditional pigs in blankets, a selection of winter vegetables, not forgetting cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes, all finished with a classic homemade mince pie with brandy sauce is sure to keep everyone happy.” – Ash from Spitting Pig.

“One of our most popular dishes at this time of year is braised shin of beef, cottage pie and roast celeriac and red wine. These cuts of meat also tend to be cheaper, so the price of your food should reflect this.” – Darren from Carringtons Catering Ltd.

“Sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and hazelnuts will make those cold months a lot more bearable.” – Jess from Tender Cow.

“For a winter wedding, go for a toffee apple hot toddy. It’s a big seller in the winter months and a drink that everyone seems to enjoy. Toffee sauce is used to line a glass filled with a double shot of whiskey, spiced rum, fireball, amaretto, and tequila (your choice of spirit) topped off with a hot winter spiced mulled cider.” – Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“Most of us relish the thought of warm evenings in front of the fire with a glass of red wine and a rather contented stomach. Braised dishes or what is now termed as slow-cooked foods, are symbolic of winter. Think slow-braised beef, or perhaps a classical French dish of ‘pot au feu’ where a whole chicken is gently cooked with root vegetables and maybe some belly pork and lentils all together in one big pot infusing their flavours into each other.” – Darren from Carringtons Catering Ltd.

“Why not add leek to cauliflower cheese to add an extra dimension to your dish? Trust me, it tastes amazing.” – Ash from Spitting Pig.

Spring and summer

“The food at this time of year should be reflective of all that mother nature has to offer not only for the freshness and optimum quality but also as food comes into season the cost of the harvest becomes much more affordable and tastier as we can gather produce locally without the need to import from overseas. At Carringtons Catering Ltd, we automatically think of new season spring lamb, but our minds also turns to some wonderful produce that our seas offer as the waters surrounding us start to warm up. Cannelloni of crab and leek with brown crab mayonnaise and pink grapefruit, and a fillet of wild salmon with asparagus, roast salsify, chive cream sauce are wonderful dishes that reflect our island and its amazing bounty.” – Darren from Carringtons Catering Ltd.

“A fresh summer cocktail is a double grape martini or a lemon meringue pie made with fresh meringue from a syphon and cooked with a blowtorch.” – Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“A lychee and rose martini are by far the most requested cocktail at a wedding – usually as a welcome drink or post-ceremony. It’s light, fresh and visually pleasing. Made up of gin, lychee liqueur, rose liqueur, lemon juice, lychee juice garnished with gypsophila pegged to the glass, it’s perfect for spring and summer weddings.” – Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“Times are changing and trends are moving on from the traditional plated starters. What could be better than antipasti sharing boards with an array of cured meats, local cheeses, olives, dips, and crusty fresh artisan slices of bread? Make an individual bespoke platter for the bride and groom to experience the full impact of this.” – Ash from Spitting Pig.

“Create an unforgettable summer dessert with vanilla cheesecake topped with fresh strawberries, smoked vanilla cream and meringue. If you want to get that smoked element to your dish, you could get your hands on a cold smoking generator, or for a short cut, you can use Halen Mon oak smoked water, then whip it into your cream with vanilla sugar.” – Eloise from Smoke and Steel.

“Elevate your roast dinner with a vibrant salsa verde made with hand-picked wild garlic. It’s a versatile accompaniment for meat, fish or chicken. You could also serve sweet cherry tomatoes with garlic yoghurt for a fresh, zingy side dish. Add a sprinkling of sunflower seed dukkah for a little bit of crunch. Perfect for picnics or barbecues when the weather warms up.” – Eloise from Smoke and Steel.

“The delicious transition from spring into summer is one of the most joyous times of the year. There is always a buzz in the air and the opportunities for what the rest of the year has in store feel infinite. We love to serve slow-cooked hogget shoulder with salsa verde; barbecued mackerel; herbed potato salad; Isle of Wight tomato salad with caper dressing and market salads with smoked rapeseed dressing. Poached rhubarb with orange and almond cake is another of our favourites.”  – Jess from Tender Cow.

“For many of our chefs, autumn is the most exciting season to create menus and host events. It allows us to reap the rewards of our growers’ hard work throughout the year and show off the beauty of British produce. A few of our favourites are crispy porchetta with punchy gremolata; ribollita-style white beans; crispy jacket potato fries with aioli; roasted squash with salsa matcha and caramelised pumpkin seeds; poached pear pavlova with lashings of Chantilly cream and locally-sourced cheese with quince.”  – Jess from Tender Cow.

“Fade to Black is one of my favourite cocktails. Muddling five blackberries at the base of the shaker, add 50ml of spiced rum, 25ml of lemon juice, 12.5ml of sugar syrup and half an egg white (for a vegan option, use aquafaba or foaming bitters) garnished with fresh blackberries on a skewer.” – Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“Don’t pick food that is out of season and try to limit what is on your plate to local produce.” –Darren from Carringtons Catering Ltd.

“A homemade recipe inspired by our cocktail tour of Thailand is The Parch. Created using roasted pineapple muddled with dark rum, lime, mint, hazelnut syrup and pineapple juice.” – Tom from Kindred Spirit Cocktails.

“Autumn is a key season in food with the abundance of game that comes to the fore and the waters and grounds starting to become cold. On the back of warm summer, wild brambles can be picked, and quince can be used for making jams and chutneys. Hearty foods start to slowly take over with earthy flavours that reflect the produce that is coming from the ground.” – Darren from Carringtons Catering Ltd.

“A Southern slow roast menu is a sensational twist with mouth-watering options that are a real party pleaser. Choose a selection of slow-cooked meats gently roasted in rubs and coated with an array of bespoke sauces, served with a selection of classic sides, whether it will be traditional mac n cheese with a crispy crumb or buttered corn on the cobs with herb butter.” – Ash from Spitting Pig.

“For a classic main course sharing platter, combine hot smoked salmon with beef picanha, maple pork belly, garlicky parmentier potatoes and fire-charred broccoli to create a wholesome and smokey feast perfect for autumn.” – Eloise from Smoke and Steel.

WHEN ROMEO

met Juliet

This shoot at Victoria Warehouse was inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet

Images courtesy of Kate McCarthy Photography

Ihave always loved Baz Luhrmann and appreciated his commitment to maximalism,” says photographer Kate McCarthy. “He has a distinct signature to his work that’s instantly recognisable. Whilst all weddings are unique and magical, I like to think my photos are imbued with a thread of romance, a little nostalgia and unflinching honesty. At the start of every wedding season, I bring together my merry band of extraordinary women to stretch our legs creatively and sink our teeth into a styled shoot. This year, I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone, explore the spaces in the shadows and artificial light and with a nod to BA’s Romeo + Juliet

“What followed was a shoot day of dreams, soundtracked by our usual playlist of 90s hip hop and the R&J soundtrack, a creative bubble of energy and bonkers design,” adds Kate. “We work so beautifully as a team, and I can only hope my photos have done all of their incredible, magical, extraordinary work credit. I came away inspired and energised with a few new tricks up my sleeves and the unbelievable feeling of being uplifted by so many amazingly talented women in this mind-blowing industry. I cannot thank our incredible team enough, my queens who make me always want to work harder and be better at what I do.”

TIME

for tea

This styled shoot at The Shireburn Arms is full of inspiration

Images courtesy of Don’t Delete the Kisses

Agroup of local suppliers worked together to create this quintessential tea party theme without it being too on the nose. “We wanted to use pale yellows and blues with a touch of green and cream,” says Sarah Nowak from The Shireburn Arms. “The rectangular, unclothed tables reflected the garden feel and the florals created a light, breezy atmosphere. Jennifer and I worked

closely to create the aesthetic and contacted individual suppliers, who all added to the day. The ice cream bike and teacups added the final country feel along with the gorgeous cake design. We felt that the pictures of the bride and her mum were a fresh take on the important people of the day; both looked beautiful with natural hair and make-up and stunning dresses that fit the theme.”

Q&AFashion & Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best MUM’S THE WORD

I want to find a gorgeous piece of jewellery to give my mum as a gift on the morning of my wedding. Are there any pieces you would recommend?

Choosing a piece of jewellery to give your mum on your wedding day can be a very personal decision. Some classic and meaningful options include:

A locket necklace – This is a beautiful and sentimental option which allows your mum to keep a photo of you/her/ your partner close to her heart.

A birthstone bracelet or pendant – Something featuring your mum’s birthstone or the birthstones of her children can be a meaningful and personalised gift.

A pearl necklace – A classic and elegant piece of jewellery that your mum can wear not only on your wedding day but after the day as well.

A charm bracelet – This is a lovely way to commemorate your wedding day and your relationship with your mum. You can add a charm which represents your wedding day or a special memory you share with her.

Simple stud earrings – This is a timeless and sophisticated option that your mum can wear on your wedding day and for years to come.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose a piece of jewellery that you know your mum will love and cherish.

BOHO CHIC

I’m planning to have two different dresses for my boho-themed wedding –how can I make them both fit the theme without being too similar?

Start by looking for two different silhouettes. One could be a flowy A-line and the other a fitted mermaid, this will give you two different looks whilst still fitting the boho theme.

Go for dresses in different fabrics, such as lace or crochet for one and flowy chiffon or silk for the other; this will help create a distinct look for each dress. Mix up the details and incorporate different elements, such as fringing or beading on one dress and embroidery on the other.

Accessorising each dress will help set them apart. Consider adding a flower crown or a statement necklace to one and a vintage belt or a dainty hair accessory to the other.

Remember, whatever you go for, have fun with the process and choose dresses that make you feel beautiful and confident.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
84

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 85

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 87

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
