You’re engaged – congratulations! Whether you’re at the beginning or the end of your wedding planning journey, it can be stressful trying to put everything together. There’s so much to consider, from the venue and theme to the dress and accessories, and so you might be asking yourself, where do I start? Before you start surfing the internet for venues and supplies, sit down together with a cuppa and discuss what you want your wedding day to be. Whatever you decide will have an impact on everything else you do from here on in. Think about your overall vision. Is rustic bliss your vibe, or are you more of a modern chic kind of couple? You may even want to host a festival-style wedding in a field with a temporary structure such as a marquee or tipi for cover. All of these aspects will guide you towards the style of venue you should be researching. Crucial to this process are the budget and guest numbers, as one will very much dictate the other. You may want to invite 300 people, but are you willing and able to fund 300 wedding breakfasts? Be realistic about what you want to spend, settle on a budget, and above all, stick to it.

We’ve created an issue full of planning tips and inspiration to help you streamline the process and create the wedding of your dreams!

REST AND RELAXATION

Penmaenuchaf Hotel in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, has completed the first phase of its ambitious two-part refurbishment project. This charming mountain retreat has unveiled four beautifully designed suites on the top floor, as well as new kitchens, perfect for pre-wedding getaways.

A RELAXING MINI-MOON

The Dreaming, a new wellness retreat founded by singer Charlotte Church, is nestled in the spectacular surroundings of the Elan Valley in the heart of Wales. The grounds of the former home of Laura Ashley boast waterfalls, rocks, caves, and, quite simply, an abundance of natural beauty. Rhydoldog House has been transformed from a rundown property into a stunning wellness retreat that works both with and for nature.

From short retreats with daily wellness activities to longer breaks with specialist practitioners, The Dreaming delivers an exciting and nourishing menu of activities in keeping with the seasons. These include yoga, a sound healing ceremony, foraging, mythic storytelling, stargazing, cold water immersion, singing at dawn, den building and sensory portal building. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also painting, dancing, an outdoor cinema, herbalism, woodwork, meditation, a silent disco, and nighttime forest bathing. Guests are invited to participate in as many or as few of these offerings as they like. They can enjoy a very full three days or simply curl up somewhere comfortable in the beautiful surroundings and read a book.

Charlotte Church tells us: “I have regularly tried to use my platform to campaign for climate action, economic equity, and wellbeing for all. Some of that has turned out to be effective and meaningful, but I always felt that there was more I could be doing. I think that’s why I fell so utterly in love with Rhydoldog House, as it gave me a vision of an integrated healing centre in line with my most deeply held values. The realisation of that vision has completely changed my life, and I hope that we can help our guests change their lives too, even if it’s just in small ways.”

Head over to www.thedreaming.co.uk for more information.

Founder and owner of Seren, Neil Kedward, said: “We’re delighted to have completed the first exciting phase of our refurbishment work at Penmaenuchaf, with our four newly designed suites now ready for guests to enjoy. The design vision was to create a true sense of ‘hiraeth’, a Welsh term that describes a longing for a place that holds some nostalgia deep in your soul. I hope Penmaenuchaf already represents the true definition of ‘hiraeth’, and we hope it’s a feeling our guests fondly take away with them.”

The second phase of Penmaenuchaf’s restoration project will commence in January 2024, with the aim of a late spring completion, and will include extensive work on the remainder of the bedrooms and ground-floor lounge spaces. It will also set in motion the beginning of a much larger project to restore and recover the grounds and historic gardens.

Located in the heart of Bryngarw Country Park, there are an array of photo opportunities available, including the golden meadows, neverending woodland, and the iconic ornamental bridge in the stunning oriental garden.

LOVE AT FIRSTswipe

Siân and Adam had a rustic-themed celebration at Llancaiach Fawr Manor

Images courtesy of Oliver Rees Photography

Siân

and Adam met online. “Adam’s sisters persuaded him to give online dating a go, and luckily we both swiped right,” says Siân. “We hit it off, and within two months, we were living together. Of course, I fancied him, but I also fell in love very quickly with his sense of humour, his kind and gentle nature, and his academic achievements. We’re both quite geeky, and I think this is what cemented our relationship, as we can both name specific moments when we realised the other was ‘the one’. For me, it was not long after we met in 2016 when I mentioned a musician I really admired, and Adam pulled out his phone to show me that he had her, and my favourite song no less, on his playlist. This may not sound extraordinary, but the musician was the Ukrainian Eurovision winner from 2004!”

Adam popped the question on Christmas Day. “I had previously said if he was to propose, to make sure there was a puppy as well as a ring,” shares the bride. “He followed through, except the

puppy was a soft toy! It looked exactly like my family’s dog, Tehya, and I was bowled over that he had remembered and put so much thought into the detail. He poured his heart out before asking the question, but I was so emotional I can’t remember a word of it! On the plus side, it meant I prepared myself to listen intently to every word of his speech on our wedding day.”

The couple hosted their big day at Llancaiach Fawr Manor. “It was practically on our doorstep, and the Great Hall was perfect for a small, candle-lit affair,” adds Siân. “The barn offered rustic charm and the promise of a dramatic entrance with its enormous wooden double doors, and the conservatory was clean and modern with beautiful views over the surrounding meadows. What’s more, there was plenty of outdoor space and a children’s park on-site, perfect for our little guests.”

Read on to hear some of Siân’s favourite moments from their big day...

33 REAL WEDDINGS

Originally, we had planned to get married in the autumn of 2022. Despite rearranging to spring 2023, we decided to retain our autumnal colour scheme of navy and copper, adding in hints of dusky pinks through the floral arrangements. We were keen for the décor to be sympathetic to the historical surroundings we found ourselves in without being gimmicky.

Our children were only four months and two years old on our wedding day. We wanted it to be a family-orientated occasion, so we decided to keep it short and simple, opting for the venue’s halfday hire offer. We chose the barn for our ceremony, the adjoining courtyard for our drinks reception and the conservatory for our wedding breakfast.

We worked with The Cottage Garden in Nelson for our floral arrangements. We had agreed that the flowers would be one of our ‘big ticket items’ and we were so lucky to have an ongoing dialogue with our florist, Jess, about our theme and how we wanted to portray it. Our showstopper was a 2.4-metre-high arch, which reflected my bouquet with plenty of pampas grass, roses and pheasant feathers. Poor Jess had to design and re-design this so many times to make sure the arrangements weren’t too heavy for the stand!

Adam and I wanted our favours to be relevant to the theme but also have a purpose and not end up in the back of a drawer. We were thrilled when we came across a family-run beekeeping business called More Bees Please, from whom we bought pots of honey with wooden twizzler sticks and personalised labels.

The hugely talented Calon Lân Cakes created our cake using Welshcakes. Of course, we had to purchase some of their goodies to test them before the wedding, and Sarah, the owner, was kind enough to send us some samples. We eventually decided on milk chocolate, white chocolate, and cranberry. Our cake topper was special and so personal: a peg doll family, but not just any family – ours! After sending some photos and details of our wedding outfits to CraftingBirdUK, Natalie (the proprietor) hand painted a family of peg dolls to look just like us. It was a very special buy that will hopefully be kept in our family for many years.

Adam and I made a conscious decision to focus on small businesses, particularly if they were able to offer handmade or personalised items.
34

We worked with Cartiria Design on our invitations and order-ofservice booklet. We were particularly impressed with the handdrawn map of the local roads and landmarks to help our guests who were from further afield find our venue. We added a personal touch to the invitations by designing our own wax seals. We liaised with StampGoGoWedding, who created the bespoke design for our stamp as well as supplying the wax.

We were honoured that my father asked very early on to be in charge of the wedding cars. We arrived in style in a vintage Rolls Royce provided by South Wales Wedding Cars, and other members of our family arrived in a blue Bentley driven by Carl Bennett.

We chose a three-course meal for our wedding and were over the moon when the events manager at Llancaiach Fawr Manor agreed for us to have a hog roast instead of one of the set main courses. It went down a treat, and we were overjoyed that many of our guests also took takeaway boxes home with them!

I wanted my dress to be memorable, in keeping with our simple, rustic theme, and a reflection of my own personal style. The one and only feature I didn’t want to compromise on was statement lace. Quite by chance, I stumbled across Willow in White Bridal Co on Facebook and saw a photo they posted from a shoot that had taken place a year or so before. I instantly fell in love with the dress, which, whilst not informal, did not look as rigid or ‘weddingy’ as other dresses I’d seen. I particularly loved how effortlessly beautiful the model looked in it. I was sold instantly. I kept my accessories simple, with jewellery from Clogau and a pearl necklace and stud earrings my parents gifted me on the morning of the wedding.

I didn’t have bridesmaids, just my sister, Rhian, who agreed to be my maid-of-honour. Fortunately, a smaller bridal party meant I had more flexibility with my budget when choosing a dress. I’ll admit I spent far too long searching for and ordering navy maxi dresses to fit in with our colour scheme, and each time, both Rhian and I were in agreement that they were not right. The dress I picked for Rhian flashed up on my Facebook page as part of Coast’s social media marketing. I fell in love with it instantly and only hesitated for a millisecond as, in powder blue, it didn’t quite match the colour scheme.

In keeping with the colour scheme, Adam and his brother Nathan wore matching navy waistcoats and trousers and crisp white shirts from Marc Darcy. They accessorised with orange ties and personalised tie pins from The Tie Store.

35 REAL WEDDINGS

We didn’t have an evening reception, so we didn’t hire any entertainment, but we did focus strongly on our music playlists for each section of the day. Many of our guests had either not met one or other of us or hadn’t seen us since we were children, so it was the perfect opportunity to showcase the people we have become.

I want to give a special mention to the registrar who conducted our wedding. He managed to perfectly balance the solemnity of the occasion with enough humour to make it just right for us. He was also very patient when our attention switched to our son now and again, who was happily walking around during the ceremony, oblivious to what was happening!

One of my best friends, Gemma, was with me on the morning of the wedding, and she was unflappable! She helped my family and I stay on schedule, lending a hand from zipping up dresses to reminding us to breathe and enjoy ourselves. We would never have gotten there on time without her!

I think the best word I can use to describe how I felt during the wedding is ‘proud’. Proud of my husband for everything he has achieved, for being a wonderful human being, for choosing to share his life with me, and proud of our boys, who were the real stars of the wedding.

I love that we were able to include our boys in every part of our wedding; it wouldn’t have been the same without them.

One of the standout moments for me was the best man’s speech. This was unorthodox, as it was delivered by Adam’s brother, three sisters, and mother. Each of them had their own take on the speech and shared some embarrassing moments from his life.

The love of MY LIFE

Caitlin and Abe were good friends but soon realised they were meant to be together Images courtesy of David Barrett Photography

38

Caitlin

and Abe met in college and quickly became friends. “We always liked and respected each other, and one summer that turned into something more, and we quickly realised that we had never been as comfortable with anyone else,” says Caitlin. “The mixture of new love with the familiarity of a long-term friend made us very quickly fall in love.”

Abe had planned to propose to Caitlin on their second anniversary. “I had sneakily measured Caitlin’s ring finger in the first few months of our relationship as I was so confident that I would marry her one day,” shares the groom. “We planned to go for a meal together and visit a romantic spot in Southerndown, which is where we first realised that we had feelings for each other. However, on the Monday before our anniversary, on the way home from picking up a pizza, Caitlin started asking about the timeline of our relationship and when we would be engaged and married. I had to reluctantly hide the fact that the ring was sitting in my desk drawer waiting for the weekend and try and play it cool, ‘Oh, maybe within a couple of years?’ Realising she was disappointed with this answer, I decided, why not now? As we got in, ready to share a delicious pizza, I grabbed the ring from the drawer and nervously entered the room. I walked over, sat half on the sofa and half on one knee, and proposed right there with the pizza right by us. She said yes! The ring fit perfectly, and she loved it!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“My mother and I went to Craig Y Nos Castle for a wedding fair, and we loved how beautiful, historic, and grand it was,” explains Caitlin. “There was a harp playing in the main room, and we instantly started crying. We compared other places, but nothing came close to Craig Y Nos Castle. The history of the building, the grandness of the rooms, and the incredibly reasonable price of the package they offered couldn’t be beaten! We are so glad we did go with them, as the staff are some of the kindest people we have ever met, and they made the whole wedding stress-free and perfect! They worked tirelessly to make sure everything was decorated beautifully and on track with the order of the day. Any queries we had, they were available to help ease our worries and stresses.

“I hand-crafted most of our decorations with the help of my mother and brother’s partner, Emily,” continues the bride. “The idea was to include rustic decorations, making use of recycled jars, subtle lighting, and wooden hearts. The tables were decorated with copper wire lights in glass jars and bottles, hessian table runners, a mix of burgundy and hessian chair sashes, mason jars wrapped in lace, and photos of each guest as a little personal touch. Some of the photos were more than 20 years old and stored in photo albums that our mothers had.”

For their favours, the couple opted for Welshcakes made by Caitlin’s mother. “My mother and Emily also helped make the centrepieces,” recalls Caitlin. “To finish the look, we sourced our table plan from Mally’s Crafts Limited, and That Finishing Touch provided our flowers.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“My dress was an A-line design with lace overlay,” remembers Caitlin. “It was important for me to have a piece of my grandmother with me, who passed away while we planned the wedding, so I wore her engagement ring as my something old and something borrowed.”

Abe’s suit was provided by Hanson – The Clothes People, an independent tailor with a selection of suits available for hiring. “I was able to find a suit on their website, which matched the theme and looked great,” explains Abe. “It was navy, paired with a grey waistcoat with blue checkered stripes. I wore a watch Caitlin gifted me, which had a brown strap, silver case, and blue face, as well as brown Oxford shoes. I also had a burgundy tie and pocket square that matched the theme

and looked great with the suit.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We had harpist Joy Cornock provide beautiful music during the ceremony and for an hour of the reception,” says the bride. “My parents surprised us by hiring Phil Jay Close Up Magician, who performed between the wedding breakfast and evening party. He was a massive hit and stunned all of our the guests. He even had a couple of tricks specifically for us, the most memorable being when he gave us one card each, which we signed. He then magically turned the two cards into one, with the signatures on the back and front of a single card, signifying our union as a couple.

“DJ Sound and Lighting played in the evening, and he made sure that the dancefloor was packed,” adds Caitlin. “He had a rustic look available for his DJ booth, and it fit perfectly with our theme. For our first dance, he played our chosen song and offered a dancing on clouds moment, where a fog machine filled the floor, and it looked and felt like we were up in the clouds dancing together.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“As cheesy as it sounds, I can honestly say it was the best day of my life, and the only downside was that I can’t do it every weekend,” shares Caitlin. “With the help of Craig Y Nos Castle keeping everything running, I didn’t have any stress and was able to just enjoy the day with my new husband and all our family and friends. The ceremony was lovely, the food was delicious, and Abe and I danced so much that we limped back to our room! The speeches also stood out. It was lovely hearing all the thought that everyone had put into them. They had the whole room crying and laughing in equal measure, but what really stood out to me was how much everyone cried throughout the whole day. It felt like there wasn’t a dry eye for more than five minutes.”

One of Abe’s favourite moments was seeing Caitlin walk down the aisle. “I teared up straight away and couldn’t believe that I was going to be marrying such a beautiful bride,” adds Abe. “One of the funniest moments was during the ceremony, where, after repeating what the registrar was saying, I managed to call Caitlin Jessica, Jessica Caitlin, which luckily wasn’t the worst mistake in the world! I think we all laughed at that moment, and fortunately, the marriage is still legally binding, as I quickly said her name the correct way!

“The wedding was so special thanks to all the suppliers and guests that came; they made the day perfect,” continues the groom. “Special thanks must go to Caitlin’s mother, Lisa, and Craig Y Nos Castle for being the wedding planners! Lisa researched the cake, the place cards, the table plan, the venue, the flowers, the hessian table runners, the decorations, and the centrepieces and went with Caitlin to every hair, make-up, and dress trial. Caitlin’s mother and father have been married for 20 years, and unbeknownst to them, Caitlin made a little speech after our first dance and invited them up to the dancefloor to dance to their first dance song, Angels by Robbie Williams.

“Our wonderful photographer, David Barrett, has passed away since photographing our wedding,” shares the couple. “He captured our day beautifully, and we were so sad to hear of his passing.”

HONEYMOON

“We went to Paphos, Cyprus, to stay at a wonderful five-star hotel,” says Caitlin. “We were on our honeymoon for a week but wish it could have lasted forever! It was Abe’s first time abroad and his first time flying, so it was a big moment for him! We planned this trip together after researching hundreds of hotels and resorts, it was a food lover’s dream as we were all inclusive for three meals a day and unlimited snacks and cocktails.”

Bethan and Yosif opted for a lilac colour palette for their big day celebration

Bethan and Yosif met at a mutual friend’s birthday party. “The first thing I noticed about Yosif was his confidence, and the more time we spent together, the closer we got,” says Bethan. “As we started to go on more dates, I quickly realised that I had found the person that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.”

Yosif popped the question in February 2022. “We had booked tickets to see our favourite musical in Cardiff,” shares the bride. “At the end of the performance, Yosif delayed leaving the venue, and when we finally started to go, he got down on one knee and popped the question, despite some struggles getting the ring out of his blazer pocket!”

Read on to see some of Bethan’s favourite moments from their big day...

45 REAL WEDDINGS

We first saw our reception venue at a wedding fair. We fell in love with the view of the bay and knew they had a good reputation and lots of experience with weddings. After sitting down with the team, we were even more confident with our decision. They were very accommodating of our needs for halal food, answered all of our questions, and had brilliant staff on hand on the day to make everything was as easy and enjoyable as possible for us.

We had a great buffet for our evening meal, including mini burgers, hot dogs, and kofta kebabs to make sure everyone in our wedding party was catered for. Yosif and I hired a white car from Bijou Wedding Car Hire Cardiff & South Wales, which was decorated with ivory ribbons. Cakes by Nikkie supplied our wedding cake. It was a buttercream drip design decorated in lilac and light blue to match our colour scheme. Our amazing florist, Emma Hall Designs, created artificial arrangements, which we placed in square glass vases. She used all the hues from our colour scheme and lots of foliage.

I attend St. John’s Church regularly; the priest is always welcoming and made sure our wedding ran smoothly.

I chose a dress called Bodhi by WED2B and a sparkly belt from Quiz. I wore my mum’s veil, which we had altered to be double-layered to complement the dress. I first saw the gown online and knew I loved it. I tried on several others, but they all weren’t quite right. The floral lace on my dress felt so special, and I just knew it was the one.

My bridesmaids opted for lilac dresses from Next. The design was a chiffon multi-way, allowing the girls to choose how they wanted to wear the straps on the day.

We had a brilliant DJ play the songs that we requested via email, along with requests from guests and ourselves on the day.

I had a brilliant morning getting ready with my bridesmaids. As the ceremony grew closer and more people headed off to the venue, I grew nervous, but when I got to the end of the aisle and saw Yosif, I was overjoyed. The vows and blessings made me emotional, but also very happy that I could now call Yosif my husband.

The best thing about our venue was the views that we got throughout the day; it made our photographs stunning and everything felt extra special. Martin, our photographer, is incredibly talented and managed to get some amazing pictures of the whole day while remaining discrete and not interrupting anyone.

Yosif wore a navy, pinstripe three-piece suit from Slater Menswear, accompanied by a light blue shirt and a navy tie.

How to create the wedding of your dreams

Hereat Your South Wales Wedding, we understand how overwhelming organising your nuptials can be. To help, we’ve spoken to local experts and asked for their tips on choosing the perfect suppliers for your big day…

SEARCHING FOR THE ONE

The team at All About Eve Bridal

(www.allaboutevebridalwear.com) shares their tips on finding the perfect wedding dress for your big day…

Social media and websites are great places to find inspiration. Screenshot your favourite dresses to show your stylist at your bridal appointment or send pictures via social media; we love to see what has caught your eye. Pinterest is brilliant for keeping all your pictures and ideas in one place.

Keep an open mind and give those wild cards a try. You may have bypassed a dress initially, but that gown could end up being the one We fully understand if you want to bring your nearest and dearest with you to pick the wedding dress of your dreams. Coordinating a group of people is never easy, so why not start a WhatsApp group? This could be a great part of your wedding dress journey and a handy way to look back on conversations. Suggest some dates, and fingers crossed, you will all be free on the same day. Once you have a date, book an appointment online.

Look for a boutique with a private space, so you don’t need to worry about strangers seeing you in your dress. Bring a pair of shoes with a similar-height heel to what you plan to wear on the day and a strapless bra. Nude-coloured underwear also works really well under a

wedding dress.

One question we frequently get asked is: Will you have dresses that fit me? Check with your boutique about what sizes they stock; for example, we have gorgeous wedding dresses in a range of sizes for you to try on, and selected dresses can be made up to size 40. Should a dress not be the exact size for you, we can make that gown look like it fits you by clamping, pinning, or adding a panel if needed. We will have hoops for you to try on with your dresses; these make the gown more comfortable to walk in; they can also make it much cooler and enhance the shape of the skirt too.

You may need to try on a number of wedding dresses before you fall in love with one. But when you find the one and have that moment, there is no better feeling. When you’re ready to order your wedding dress, please keep in mind that it can take anywhere from six to 10 months to be made. Sometimes this can be much quicker, but it’s best to be cautious and allow the optimum amount of time.

Most wedding dresses will require some kind of alteration, so please allow six to eight weeks before your wedding for your adjustments to be made. The approximate cost of alterations can vary depending on the number of alterations you need, but as a guide, allow £250–£300 for general alterations. Be aware that this may vary if you require more in-depth work.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

June Gould (DJ June Cecilia) from SGDJ Weddings in Cardiff (www.sgdjweddings.com) shares her top tips on choosing a DJ for your nuptials…

It’s a great idea to start looking for a DJ as soon as you have your wedding date. Once you’ve decided on a venue, this can influence the length of entertainment that you require. If you’re looking for a DJ, you will find many professionals who can look after your whole day, from the ceremony through the end of the night.

Any supplier coming into a public venue will be expected to have public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment. This is basic; don’t book a supplier who doesn’t have it.

Check out suppliers’ websites, social media pages, and listings to find reviews, photos, videos, and sound clips. If you’re booking a DJ, ensure you can identify who the DJ that will be at your wedding is. It’s your big day, and unless an emergency arises, you should be able to speak to or

SAY ‘I DO’

The team at Craig Y Nos Castle (www.craigynoscastleweddings.com) shares their top tips to help you find your dream venue…

Set yourself a realistic budget and compare everything you plan against it. Your wedding reception is likely to cost twice as much as you first imagined. Elect a friend or family member as ‘bookkeeper’ to keep a shopping list with a running total of the costs as you add each new item to your list. That way, you are free to either increase your budget to fit your developing shopping list or to reduce your shopping list to fit your budget.

When selecting your venue, consider the number of guests the venue can hold for a sit-down meal; is it enough for the number of people you want to have at your wedding breakfast?

Check with your venue to see what their licensing hours are and what time the bar opens for your guests.

Catering facilities and kitchens always merit inspection for basic cleanliness, yet few brides and grooms ever ask to see beyond the public reception rooms.

How can your guests’ accommodation requirements be satisfied, either at the venue or locally? Do inspect the accommodations and convey to your guests the standards and styles of rooms available.

One venue, two venues, or three? You can have three separate venues: a venue for the wedding ceremony, a venue for the reception, and a venue for the evening do. Should you aim to have everything under one roof? It is simpler to have the entire wedding at one venue. This certainly applies to civil weddings. Having both the wedding breakfast and the evening at the same venue avoids splitting the party up halfway through the day and having to organise getting people from one venue to another.

What are the available dates? Consider what is more important to you: the date or the venue. To increase your choice, choose early.

meet the person you’re expecting to bring the fun to your wedding.

Sometimes on social media, I see requests for a DJ that go something like ‘we only want someone to play music for a couple of hours’ or ‘we have a band, so we don’t need much time’. Something worth noting is that a DJ will set up before the band and play after they finish, and can often be the glue that holds the night together. I was talking to a drummer of a band recently who said he often had people saying, ‘If you just play for an hour, will it cost me less?’ To which he replied, ‘playing is the fun part. Travelling, setting up, organising everything, packing down, maintaining kits and clothing, and making repairs are what you pay for’. Regardless of performance time, your entertainers will have had to book a whole evening away from their families, maybe missing their own events to make yours. Expect to pay for what you get.

Remember to enjoy the day and evening! It’s time to let your hair down. Some brides change dresses for the evening party to allow them freedom of movement and to feel cooler. Either way, it’s up to you! Get some requests in ahead of time, and allow your DJ to read the room.

If you have no idea where to choose, consult friends and relatives who have been married within the last year or two. Where did they hold their reception? What did they think of their venue? What did they find to be the advantages and disadvantages of the venue they chose?

FLORAL ROMANCE

Rhian Rees from Wild and Fabulous Flowers in Cowbridge (www.wildandfabulousflowers.com) shares her top tips on finding the perfect florist for your big day…

Before you make an enquiry the most important thing to do is to spend some time researching the style of flowers that you like. Look at different designs and colours, and go with your heart. During your research, you will come across a florist or two whose designs make you smile. These are the ones for you! Give them a ring or drop them an email and arrange to have a chat. Before booking, ask the following questions:

Are they free on your wedding day? There’s not much point in running through everything to discover they are already booked.

How many weddings are they doing on that day? Some florists can fit in three bookings in a day, so I would question whether this means your flowers could be a little rushed.

What is their style? Florists are creative people, and our personalities and the way we see flowers will show in our designs. Look at lots of photos to see if the supplier is a match for your big day.

Do they deliver, is there a charge, and have they worked at your venue before? Depending on how much you are spending on your flowers, you may be charged for delivery. This is normal. Florists do not make a fortune out of their flowers, and costs are really high at the moment. It can be an advantage if the florist has been to your venue before. If not, then a good florist will visit the venue and chat with the managers about any restrictions and what time they can have access.

Do they use any locally grown flowers? We are lucky to have some amazing local flower farmers near us, so see if your supplier uses these. Ask for in-season flowers, as they look so much better than options that should be in bloom months earlier or later.

Are they a sustainable florist? It’s really important that floral foam is no

longer used in the industry.

Can I have specific flowers? This is a hard one. I always say to my clients that we can choose a colour palette, and then they have to trust me! Trying to get a particular rose, tulip, or peony can be impossible. Depending on weather conditions, some flowers are just not available, but there are so many other wonderful options to choose from, so keep an open mind. Your relationship with your florist needs to be based on trust. They are professionals and will do their very best for you.

Can they take my flowers to a different location on the same day? Some florists will do this but will expect a fee. Be realistic; if a huge floral installation has been created around a church porch, that is going to have to stay there! If you want to re-use your ceremony flowers later in the day, then chat through the possibilities with your florist.

Do they provide any other décor? Lots of florists have gorgeous candles, lanterns, etc, and if you like their flowers, you’ll probably have the same taste. It’s always worth asking if you can hire them out.

Do I need to pay a deposit? Generally, yes, you will be sent a booking form and asked for a deposit.

Can I change my mind? I ask all my couples a month before to re-send me some images of the flowers they like. It’s often the case that they have shifted slightly, but please don’t expect to be able to change your mind really close to the wedding day. The florist may well have pre-ordered your flowers, and some farmers even grow them specifically for individual weddings.

Can I see a mock-up of my bouquet? I would honestly say it’s not necessary. The chances are that when you book your florist, it will be a different season to your wedding day, and so the flowers available will be completely different. Every bride’s bouquet is made with care and love and is unique. It would be impossible to recreate the exact bouquet, so as I said before, please trust your florist, and then on the day, you will fall in love with not just your new husband or wife but your flowers too.

This styled shoot at Ewenny Priory turned into a real-life proposal

The1950s were the inspiration for this styled shoot, with the model wearing a short dress, sunglasses, and pearls that resonated with the Hollywood era. Organiser and photographer Kate Richards tells us more: “I asked Amy Louise MUA if she could help us find a real couple, and that’s how we discovered Morgan and Olivia, the perfect models for our styled shoot. I wanted to end the photo shoot at Ogmore-by-Sea as it has beautiful sunset views, so we chose Ewenny Priory as it was close by and very versatile with arches, florals, and a gorgeous stone coach house. After a few weeks of planning, Morgan contacted us as he wanted to propose to Olivia at the end of the photo shoot, and that’s when we knew this was going to be an extra special day. The secret wasn’t easy to keep, but we managed it well. There were tears of joy, and not just from the couple, and in that moment, we all knew how lucky we were to be doing our jobs.”

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

We’re having a large wedding with guests of all ages. What style of music would you suggest to please everyone?

Songs from the classic era of soul to the Motown catalogue of Jackie Wilson, James Brown, The Real Thing, Billy Ocean, and Tina Turner are all dancefloor fillers. These uptempo, midtempo, and ballads are songs your guests will know, regardless of their age.

DON’T RAIN ON MY PARADE

It’s forecast to rain on our wedding day; should we be worried?

The great British weather can certainly be unpredictable, but if you see rainclouds in the forecast, don’t panic! Discuss the wet weather options with your venue; chances are they have dealt with rainy weddings before and will be able to offer good advice.

If you have planned an outdoor ceremony and the weather isn’t looking favourable, move it inside the venue.

Set a specific time in advance when you’ll make the call to move the wedding undercover. This could be the night before or at least two or three hours prior to the ceremony start time.

Don’t overcomplicate the decor; that way, if the weather suddenly changes on the day, it will be a smoother transition to get everything moved inside.

Have a supply of umbrellas on hand for guests to use. Also, consider

blankets and towels to keep your guests comfortable. Clear umbrellas are best for bridal party shots so that faces aren’t obscured, and they don’t cast shadows. Don’t forget your wellies and embrace the rain; it can make for some romantic photographs.

Some of our favourite wedding images are taken in wet weather! Talk to your photographer about potential rainy photo locations. They will have experience with various weather conditions, so they can offer creative ideas for beautiful photos despite the weather. Group shots can be done indoors and look amazing with your décor as the backdrop. Look for covered areas, archways, and standout features.

Most of all, remember to keep a positive attitude and enjoy your special day. Come rain or shine!

SEARCHING FOR THE ONE

What questions should we ask a venue before booking?

You are now on the very exciting path of finding your perfect wedding venue, and with so much choice available, it is important to make sure that you are prepared before you book a viewing so that you get the most out of your visit. My top 10 questions are:

Firstly (and most importantly), how long has the venue been hosting weddings, and how experienced are the staff? After all, the service and standard of food are the two things that you and your guests will remember long after the day has passed. Visiting review sites is key to helping you shortlist your viewings.

Are bespoke packages offered as well as set wedding packages, or are set packages flexible to be tailored to your specific needs?

Are there minimum numbers or spend on certain days of the week or times of the year?

Does the venue hold more than one wedding a day, and is exclusivity of the venue an option (and at what cost)?

Is the venue licensed for civil wedding ceremonies, and if so, in what capacity are they able to host? (Also ask about wedding breakfast and evening reception capacity, as these can vary).

How extensive are the wedding breakfast and evening food choices? Do guests get a choice of menus, or is it a set menu that is offered to all guests? Are special dietary requirements catered for? Are you able

FASHION FORWARD

I’m looking for my wedding dress; what style, fit, and colour would you suggest for my summer wedding?

Firstly, you need to feel comfortable and like the best version of yourself. The last thing you want is to feel hot and bothered in your dress. If it’s a destination wedding or taking place in the height of summer, look at fabrics like chiffon that are cooler to wear.

Lots of girls love sleeves; however, as a way of staying cool during the day, we can put sleeves and arm accessories on that are detachable so you can take them off when you wish.

Fit-wise, it depends on the bride herself and what silhouette she wants. Try to avoid anything satin or heavy in fabric and instead look for lace, crepe, highleg split dresses, and sparkles that will look beautiful when glistering in the sun.

to bring in your own suppliers? Are children welcome, and what food offerings are available for them?

Is there on-site accommodation that guests can use, and are there preferential rates offered for their stay? Is breakfast included?

DARLING BUDS

How do I keep my flowers fresh before sending them to my flower preservation artist, and how long after the wedding should I do this?

Firstly, book your preservation artist in advance. This is to ensure you receive the correct care and postage instructions. Not all artists have availability at the last minute, especially during the summer months.

When possible, keep your flowers in fresh water and upright. Your venue should be able to provide a vase for you to keep your flowers in during your wedding breakfast and while you dance the night away. Your flowers should then be kept in fresh water until the day you send them. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from any heat sources. Most flowers take in water from their stems, so avoid spraying any water directly onto the petals.

When it comes to sending your flowers, every artist should have their own postage and packaging instructions. I recommend nominating a trusted member of the bridal party or a family member to take care of posting your flowers. You’ll be very busy the next few days after your wedding, and posting your flowers may not be a priority.

Most artists would like your flowers within three days of your wedding; the sooner, the better, as the condition of your flowers has a huge impact on how they will dry and how well they’ll be preserved.

The latest venue styling trends

DÉ COR Dreamy

If you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. With so many options available, this can seem like a daunting task, but the most important thing to remember is that any space can be transformed with even the simplest of details. To help you create the wedding of your dreams, we’ve put together our top tips on how to style three on-trend themes…

Sustainability

One of the biggest trends we’ve seen through 2023 is sustainability. It’s becoming more important in our daily lives and has slowly worked its way into the wedding industry.

We’ve seen a rise in the popularity of dried flowers in the last few months and are expecting this to continue in 2024. It’s a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of incorporating a pop of colour into your day.

More and more venues are introducing green initiatives to help the environment and stop weddings from being wasteful. Before booking, ask what initiatives your venue has in place, such as solar panels.

We all love the confetti shot, but make sure the confetti you’re purchasing is biodegradable. If you’re still worried about the environmental impact, consider using bubbles instead.

Favours can often be left behind at the end of the night or chucked away after the wedding, so why not donate money to a charity of your choice or gift your guests a plant or seeds that can help the environment? This can be a fun family activity if you have children attending the wedding.

To help reduce your carbon footprint, ask your guests to carpool, use public transport, or arrange for a bus to transport everyone.

There are ways to create luxurious stationery using sustainable materials. Contact companies that work with eco-products and discuss ways to recycle the décor once the wedding is over.

If you’ve ordered lots of food but are worried about there being any waste, contact a local charity and arrange for any leftovers to be given to those in need. It’s also worth talking to your caterer and seeing if they use sustainable materials.

With environmentally-friendly weddings on the rise, we can expect to see more earthy, neutral colours. Look for items like terracotta pots, wooden plinths, and linen napkins. These hues look great teamed with gold and coral.

Bright and bold

Neon signs are fun and quirky and will definitely get your guests talking. These can be personalised to say your names or wedding date and look great as photo booth backdrops.

Grand floral displays are a great way of incorporating your chosen colour scheme and will make a real statement in your photographs.

With the success of the recent Barbie film, we expect to see more pink-inspired weddings. This versatile hue can be added to your tables, flowers, and even your attire.

Providing your guests with lots of fun entertainment is a trend we expect to continue into 2024. With so much choice available, from axe throwing and bouncy castles to glitter bars and ice cream vans, there is something for everyone. Ask your chosen supplier if they can add some colour to their entertainment, such as themed props or balloons.

Metallics are just as popular as ever and tie in well with most colour schemes. Opt for metallic cutlery, stands for your centrepieces, charger plates, and candle holders to add a luxurious feel to the day.

Contrary to the more subtle weddings we’ve seen in the past few years, weddings are now full of lots of colours, textures, and patterns. Don’t be afraid to go all out; if your venue has an impressive ceiling, why not make it a feature? Add hanging chandeliers, flowers, paper cranes, or even disco balls.

Your theme can stretch past your décor; colourful wedding dresses and mismatched bridesmaids’ dresses are both on the rise. A bold gown is a great way to incorporate your personality into your day. If budget allows, consider a more traditional dress for the ceremony, and surprise your guests with a costume change later in the evening.

Cakes are more than just something sweet to eat, they’re a great way of incorporating your chosen theme. If you want to make a statement, talk to your cake maker about ways to incorporate statement colours, flavours, and embellishments.

This year, we’ve seen weddings full of bright and bold hues, and we expect this trend to continue into 2024. All images from Getty Images

Veils are also growing in popularity, but that doesn’t mean you need to stick to the traditional white look. Look at adding flowers to your veil, pearls, or even having it embroidered to include your wedding date.

With a love of the great outdoors and inspired by the beautiful flora and fauna of the Pembrokeshire countryside and beaches, I have a passion for flowers and particularly enjoy working with brides to create designs which compliment their dress, choice of colours and venue.

For something a little different. I can use my creative flair with artificial and dried flowers. Dried and preserved flowers and grasses are equally as beautiful for weddings and can be kept for a long time after the celebrations.

Rustic romance

Earthy, rustic weddings have been popular throughout 2023, and we don’t see this trend ending anytime soon.

Consider hiring wooden tables to create a more rustic feel. Wooden cross-back chairs are a must, coupled with foliage laid on the tables and some wild, meadowstyle flowers.

When it comes to decorating your tables, the options are endless. Your tables should be a focal point, so consider adding flowers, candles, mason jars, table sashes, and metallic cutlery.

This theme is all about creating a setting that is laid-back and effortless. Keep your flowers relaxed and try to avoid peonies or flowers that sit neatly in your bouquet; instead, go for blooms such as roses, hydrangeas, and lots of trailing foliage. Place your blooms in milk churns, barrels, and rustic-looking vases.

Denim and leather jackets are popular accessories that we’ve seen a lot of at rustic weddings. These can be personalised with your new last name, pearls, or embroidered flowers. Plus, they look wonderful in those allimportant photographs.

String lights are a must. These are extremely versatile and can be hung from trees, beams, the exterior of your venue, or around the tables. Lanterns are also a must-have detail that can decorate almost anything.

For those of you thinking of an al fresco ceremony, look for bench seating or haybales; this is a great way to make the day feel more relaxed and rustic.

A popular part of the rustic theme is minimalism. You don’t need to incorporate a huge amount of decoration to make an impact; instead, choose items that remind you of the outside and will tie in with a more laid-back atmosphere.

Colours such as terracotta or burgundy work really well when planning a rustic wedding. These can be incorporated into your flowers, stationery, cake, and outfits.

If your wedding is in a barn or outside, there can be a lot of unused space. The best way to avoid this is to create wedding zones. Use wooden signs to point your guests to seating areas, any games you’ve set up, or any amenities they should be aware of. Be careful not to spread the zones out too much, as you don’t want your guests to not interact because they’re all scattered.

TREND SETTER

What type of bridal make-up is likely to be trending in 2024?

Next year, we will be looking at a variety of make-up trends, from bold and rebellious to soft and romantic. There will be a range of popular colours that cater to every style and occasion.

Sparkles are going to be the star of the show, bringing a sense of glitz and glamour to your look. Whether it’s a glittery eyeshadow or a shimmery highlight, the aim is to make a statement. Catwalks will be all about fantasy and mythic themes in 2024.

On the other hand, the no-make-up look is ideal for enhancing your features in a more natural way. This has been on-trend through 2023, and I believe it will continue.

Pastels are perfect for those who want to ooze romance. Whether it’s blush pink or a neutral nude with a little sparkle, the key is to keep it light and fresh.

Natural brows, soft lashes, and glowing skin will continue to be popular. You need to balance the natural with the photographic to create definition without wearing your make-up too heavy on the day.

BRIDAL BEAUTY

I’ve seen some gorgeous pictures of messy buns and textured up dos, but my hair is thin and straight. Can I still get this look?

That’s a great question that I get asked quite regularly. We can add clipin extensions to help create more thickness in your hair. I normally add padding to the locks too, sometimes with or without any extensions, depending on your hair, as it helps create lots of volume. Padding will help secure the style and make it more comfortable, especially if it’s being worn all day.

Straight hair can still create texture as long as the right products are used; these should make the style and curls last all day.

Lady of the dance

Beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, talks to Strictly’s Luba Mushtuk about health, wellbeing and the all-important first dance

Mushtuk has been a pro dancer on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing since 2016. On a break between tours, she took some time out to chat to our beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews. Here, she shares her top health and wellbeing tips for soon-to-be weds, as well as giving us the lowdown on how she keeps fit and healthy when she’s not performing on the show or touring.

Luba

We understand you’re a fan of getting outdoors to exercise. Where do you most love to go?

I love the outdoors especially on those rare sunny days. I’m a big sun lover! One of my favourite spots in London where I go for a run and exercise outdoors is Hampstead Heath; it’s so big and full of nature, with a great view over the city. I love being out in the fresh air.

How did you discover your passion for dance and decide to make it a career?

It all started when I fell in love with a skirt that my mum made for me when I was around three years old. I was a very naughty child, but once I had music and a skirt I was just off dancing by myself, rather than making a mess around the house! That was why my mum was so keen for me to keep dancing, it kept me out of trouble!

From the age of four, I started competing. My oldest brother was already a dancer by that time and gave me a lot of lessons at home, so even at four I was very advanced compared to my peers. I guess the universe made a decision for me, I never even questioned my career path, as I’d already been doing it my whole life. I can’t even imagine doing anything else.

What is the proudest moment of your career so far?

I’m proud of how I’m able to communicate my passion and love for dance with millions of people and hopefully make them feel every single emotion I’m expressing through my art. Being on TV is so amazing, as you can bring joy to so many people, and hopefully inspire them too.

How did you get involved with Strictly?

I started as an assistant choreographer in 2016, which I did for two years and absolutely loved working behind the scenes. I always dreamed of being a professional dancer on the show though, so I’m grateful it happened that way.

What style would you suggest a couple learn for their first dance as beginners, even for those of us with two left feet!

The first dance is such a special moment and should be magical. I’ve choreographed a good few for for my friends, I love doing them, but it all depends on music choice. Once, I did a wedding dance mix of eight songs complete with a change of a dress. It’s about the couple, music choice and what they really want. A waltz or American smooth are both good choices for a classic first dance but if you want something a bit different, more fun, just go for it!

Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours?

It’s so important to stay healthy while on tour, as our schedule is so busy. But I also keep fit and healthy between tours and building up to Strictly Come Dancing. It’s actually very simple for me – I eat very clean and exercise daily, whether that’s pilates, a run, boxing, or dance. I also think sleep is such an important part of staying healthy. I certainly love my beauty sleep – I never get less than seven hours and always try to listen to my body.

What does a typical day look like for you? How does your fitness and wellness regime fit in?

If you want to fit it in, you will. It’s all about prioritising fitness and wellness that makes you feel good. I think you’re more likely to stick to a schedule if you work out in the morning, then there’s less chance of something coming up in the day that can cause exercise to fall down the list of priorities. Doing it first thing means you can’t push it back. There’s also something to be said for putting yourself first – do something for you first thing.

My typical day starts with an early morning workout, I find it sets the

82

tone for the rest of the day. I finish the workout feeling strong, energetic and proud that I started the day with something positive. I obviously love dancing, but I’ve been really enjoying pilates recently too.

Following that, I’ll eat breakfast, have some coffee, check my diary to make sure I don’t miss any commitments, then let the day begin.

What keeps you motivated?

I find motivation within myself. I’m constantly looking to improve and become better than I was yesterday. I think that this attitude is part of being a professional dancer, you have to want to keep pushing to be better.

I’m driven to grow and evolve as a person too. I love learning and experiencing new things. I think it’s important to broaden your knowledge and change as you gain experience, which is why I try to always say “yes” to new opportunities, even if they seem scary or risky at the time.

I also find motivation in the people around me. Whether it’s family, friends, or people I work with. I’m constantly inspired by them and their achievements.

What are your top tips for a couple looking to get in shape for their wedding, and how can they maintain it once it’s back to reality with a bump?

It’s a common goal for couples to get into shape for their big day. It might be obvious, but my advice would be to focus on both nutrition and daily movement. Eating a balanced diet that includes wholefoods and avoiding highly processed, sugary foods can make a huge difference to how you feel. It’s also very important to keep hydrated and get enough sleep. I believe to look good you must feel good.

In terms of movement, finding an exercise routine that works for both partners can be helpful. You could schedule some joint sessions and some separately. For example, if you’re learning some fresh moves for your first dance you could take a dance class together (and learning that will get you into shape let me tell you!). Then, perhaps a running session apart, if that makes sense for your schedule. It’s also nice to have some ‘me’ time.

For maintaining after the wedding, I think it’s important to remember how good the new routine made you feel. But most of all, remember to love your body whatever shape you are. Beauty comes from the confidence within, so make sure if you’re looking to get into shape, you’re doing it to be stronger and healthier. Getting in shape is not always easy, but it can be a rewarding experience.

If you could tell people about one simple, initial change we could all make to our lives to start us out on the path to a healthier lifestyle, body and mind, what would it be?

Personally, I’ve found our minds and bodies are completely interconnected, and if you love yourself, you’ll fuel your body and mind with good nutrition, movement and affirmations. So, I think making a commitment to self-care and self-love is the initial step needed to make positive lifestyle changes. Then to look after your physical self, perhaps start with smaller changes that are achievable. If you’re early in your journey, you could start to get to know your body better by doing 10 minutes of stretching every morning, or if you’re slightly further along, start a new fitness class.

Whatever changes you choose to make, the key is to stay committed and consistent. Remember to be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.

You’re an incredibly busy lady, how do you maintain a healthy mind amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule?

Maintaining a healthy mindset throughout a hectic schedule is just

something that comes with experience, it’s definitely become easier over time! I’ve learned what I need to prioritise in order to make sure I can remain consistent. This means exercising in the morning, spending time meditating, and keeping an organised diary. Now I’m able to just get things done without thinking about it, but that’s only because I’ve managed to put in the time and hard work to figure it all out. Be patient with yourself and stay committed, and you’ll get there, wherever it is you want to go.

Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning?

Try to remember that it’s a blessing to have met the love of your life, that both committing to each other for a lifetime is a beautiful thing and the rest is just details.

I’m a very organised person and I love to plan things, but I can imagine that planning something as big as a wedding would be super stressful. If you’re lucky enough to have friends or family members who want to support you with the planning, maybe take them up on it! Or if you can afford it, seek support from a professional wedding planner.

It’s also important to remember that your wedding day is about you and your partner, and not about pleasing everyone else. I’ve heard a lot of my friends who’ve got married say that it’s impossible to please everyone. So, I suppose you can remove some of that stress by prioritising what you want and what makes you both happy, whether that means having a big wedding or eloping. Don’t feel pressured to conform to society’s expectations or what others want from or for you.

What’s next for you?

My goal is to continue growing, continuing to improve my craft, and grab on to any opportunities that inspire and challenge me! I love life so I’m just going to keep on living and hopefully I’ll have many more wonderful opportunities to inspire others.

Best face forward

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews investigates the much-discussed bridal must-have treatment, HydraFacial

Asbeauty editor here at County Wedding Magazines I get to talk to a lot of bridal make-up artists and skincare specialists, and have heard them recommend a course of HydraFacials on many an occasion. It’s suitable for all skin types and addresses all skincare needs, so this apparently is the best way forward to glowing big-day skin. I needed to investigate for myself so, I headed to my local HydraFacial provider, The Melrose Clinic in Leigh-on-Sea, quick smart.

I was lucky enough to have the chance to give the gold level HydraFacial a whirl, and my treatment begun with a cleanse before my therapist, Cornelia, went in with a lymphatic drainage massage. This stage is designed to assist your body’s natural ability to recycle, by opening up its lymphatic system. It helps to get rid of toxins built up in the skin, as well as reducing puffiness.

The first step of the HydraFacial proper is an exfoliation, offering the skin a second, deeper cleanse. The system uses vortex technology, a vacuum to the uninitiated, via the device’s wand, which is where the magic happens. HydraFacial works with several highly-regarded professional brands including JLO Beauty, Murad, ZO Skin Health and Circadia to produce signature products especially for this treatment and its associated technology.

The liquid is released into the tip of the wand, which is then passed over the face. Meanwhile, the technology delivers deeper product penetration and longer-lasting results than a traditional facial ever could. The first solution, Active Pore, contains algae extract, lacid acid and glucosamine. Nothing too harsh, and it works to give the skin a deep exfoliation.

Next is a light GlySal peel, so called as it contains both glycolic and salicylic acids. When you book the recommended course of

HydraFacials, your therapist will gradually move you through the strengths – 7.5 per cent, 15 per cent, and 30 per cent. It’s important not to shock the skin, so they’ll check all the way to make sure it’s happy and reacting well before moving to the more intense versions.

The peel opens up the pores and exfoliates even more deeply than the previous exfoliation step. You’ll also find it has a brightening effect and helps with breakouts, no doubt music to your ears as you prepare for your big day.

Moving on to the extraction part of the process, the vacuum technology comes into its own removing black heads from the nose, and is much kinder to the skin than squeezing them out. Although I didn’t have any blackheads, I do struggle with an oily T-zone, so this was one of the most satisfying sections for me. Be gone dirt and debris!

The chemical peel is then neutralised before moving on to the booster, exclusive to the gold level. During my consultation at the beginning of the treatment, we’d discovered that my skin was particularly dehydrated. The sudden temperature change hadn’t been doing it any favours and what I thought were just dry skin patches, turned out to be eczema. So, my therapist selected Hydraglucan by Nassif MD. As well as a healthy helping of hyaluronic acid it also contains glucosamine, which aids collagen production and softens skin tissue. My skin was so parched, it soaked the product up in double quick time, literally lapping up every drop of goodness from the booster.

I was next put under red LED and infrared lights to bring any redness down and ensure the serum fully penetrated the skin. These also heal, which was great news for my eczema patches. There’s also a blue light option, which is likely the one your therapist will opt for if you suffer from breakouts as it’s antibacterial. I relaxed beneath the glow for 15 minutes, while I tried not to doze off, so relaxed was I by this point.

Finally, came the skin infusion, the part that makes the complexion really glow. It contains hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, arnica to calm, and mineral skin conditioners – copper, magnesium and zinc.

If you ask your therapist at the end, they’ll show you the gunky jar! This is where all of the extractions from your skin end up. To be fair, mine could have been worse. But knowing the content of that jar was once stored in the pores of my face and now isn’t, was super-satisfying. No lie, I’ve been talking about this treatment since I left the clinic. I entered with utterly miserable skin and over the next few days it began to feel clearer, lighter and crucially was responding to the skin care I was applying. I’m happy to report that I’m so pleased with the result, I no longer feel self-conscious when I dare to go out make-up free. I can only imagine the results following a full course.

For brides-to-be a course of six HydraFacials six months before the big day is recommended. This allows time for the chemical peel intensity to be increased gradually and have optimum effect. It’s advised that your final treatment be left no later than a week prior to the wedding just in case of any adverse reactions. The most popular option amongst nearlyweds is the silver HydraFacial, priced at £140 the cost comes down when you book a course, and includes everything I’ve talked about above, minus the booster serum.

WarPaint For Men shares its make-up and skincare tips for grooms-to-be

Ourgrooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with the founder of WarPaint For Men, Danny Gray, to discuss his skincare advice for grooms-to-be.

Base prep – As great make-up starts with healthy skin, preparation is key to ensuring any products you apply, like tinted moisturiser or concealer, sit well and last all day. Start by using a hydrating cleanser with warm water to wash your face. Follow this up with a hydrating moisturiser and a primer to create a great base for your make-up. It’s a good idea to leave the primer for a minute or so before applying any products.

SPF always – It’s important to wear SPF every single day to protect your skin from sun damage. Don’t worry; sun cream designed for your face isn’t the same greasy stuff you’d use for your body. It's often lighter and non-greasy, helping to create a good base for make-up.

Foundation vs tinted moisturiser –Sometimes, foundation can feel a bit too much in the warmer months, so instead, you can opt for a tinted moisturiser. These offer light coverage for your complexion while keeping your skin moisturised.

Cool eyes – Using an eye cream is a great way to combat dark undereyes and crow’s feet. A hack to really wake up and refresh tired eyes is to keep your eye cream in the fridge. Anything cooling will help depuff your eyes and

help you feel fresher on a hot day.

Even complexion – To make sure your make-up looks even and natural, use a brush or sponge for application. When applying foundation or tinted moisturiser, blend it all over your face, up to your hairline, and down your neck. Take extra care to blend in areas that crease, which might get warmer during the summer, such as around the nose and under the eyes.

Get bronzed – Do you want that just-backfrom-holiday look without reaching for the fake tan? Try using a bronzer to lightly contour the face and add extra warmth to your skin. Lightly sweep the bronzer across the top of your forehead and cheekbones using a powder brush, and gently buff out any harsh lines using the brush.

Facial hair focus – Are your beard or brows looking a little patchy, or lighter after time in the sun? Keep your facial hair looking fuller and thicker with a make-up pencil. Keep the pencil sharp, and you’ll be able to draw hair-like strokes to fill any patches or lighter areas. Try using a small comb to blend and shape the hair.

Don’t sweat it – If you’re worried about looking sweaty or oily, using a light, translucent powder on the face can help take away shine. Gently sweep the powder in circular motions over any areas of your face that can look shiny, usually the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

Magical

MAURITIUS

Editor Claire Ridley fell in love with this year-round honeymoon hotspot

A LUXURY RETREAT

Nestled on the north coast of the island in Anse la Raie (a popular kite surfing spot) sits the five-star, eco-committed boutique hotel Paradise Cove. With Mauritius fast becoming a sustainable island, Paradise Cove’s effort to go green includes being part of the Positive Impact Movement (created by the Attitude hotel group) ensuring local sourcing and no single-use plastic.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was excited to visit this adults-only tropical paradise, an acclaimed Small Luxury Hotels of the World, having benefitted from a renovation in 2019. It offers a warm welcome with 75 rooms and suites including the Deluxe Premium Rooms, one of which was to become my home for three blissful nights. This honeymoon hideout has been authentically designed in the island’s signature style with wood, rattan and tropical palm-print wallpaper and furnishings.

The rooms have been positioned to admire the panoramic cove views, along with the cluster of other areas that make up this glamorous getaway. Centred around the main reception built under a charming thatch roof is the stylish STAY bar; the complimentary tea bar boasting locally grown flavours; the main swimming pool where I enjoyed an early morning dip each day and The Dining Room restaurant where the delicious buffet breakfast was brimming with exotic flavours.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

There’s so much choice between the four restaurants at this dreamy destination with a Dine-Around experience available in three of them for half-board and all-inclusive guests. For delicious sushi, the à la carte Japanese XO restaurant won’t disappoint while if it’s seafood you’re after, try the Cove Restaurant’s private kiosks on the sand for catch of the day.

I was in for a treat at the trendy Peninsular Restaurant and bar perched

overlooking the jetty and lagoon with far-flung views stretching across to the five north islands in one direction, and the new infinity pool (that’s heated during the winter months) in the other. A highlight was an invite to the launch of the new five-course vegan fine dining experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alexis Gauthier. I tucked into a fondant heart of palm made with pressed watermelon followed by a semi-confit cut of giraumon with a medley of grains and wild rice. The lychee wine is a must-try while you’re on the island, it became my favourite tipple of the trip!

RIDING THE OCEAN WAVES

I was lucky enough to hop on board the hotel’s 12-seat catamaran for a full-day cruise around Îlot Gabriel and Île Plate (also known as the Flat Island). After settling in for a suntan, and a delicious barbecue lunch, the boat reached Coin de Mire where it was time to grab my swimmers and jump into the warm Indian Ocean to snorkel (dive enthusiasts can scuba dive here).

Looking to make a memory on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon? Then book a sunset cruise or the Stargazing experience with an astrologer out on the jetty which is just one of the many You&Me Moments the resort offers.

Back on land, activities include yoga, Tai Chi, a gym plus two floodlit tennis courts. One of my favourite pastimes was relaxing in the cute love nests dotted around the grounds, promising privacy for honeymooners.

ISLAND ESCAPE

The wellness journey starts the moment you enter the lush open-air spa where

the tempting treatments are known as Beauty Rituals of the World of the organic French brand Cinq Mondes. I indulged in a 50-minute full body massage with therapist Samantha who used a scented pure coconut oil made on the island. Dreaming of a couple’s massage in one of the love nests at the water’s edge? Consider it done!

WITH LOVE FROM MAURITIUS

Step back in time at the historic Château De Labourdonnais, a twostorey, colonial-style Creole mansion and heritage site which was once a sugar plantation. This local landmark boasts French-style furnishings plus an orchard in the grounds that contributes to the fruit production on the island. There’s a rum distillery, plus you’ll be spoilt by the menu choice at La Table du Château, (https://domainedelabourdonnais.com).

No trip to Mauritius is complete without a visit to the vibrant capital city of Port Louis with its street markets and bustling scenes - it was a fun way to fill my Insta feed at every turn!

Couples can get married at Paradise Cove – the Classic Wedding Package includes locally grown flowers, no single-use plastic and locally sourced ingredients for the dinner – a romantic Renewal of Vows is also an option. Stay at five-star Paradise Cove boutique hotel from £334 per room each night, based on two people sharing a Deluxe Premium Room on a half-board basis, www.paradisecovehotel.com/en www.instagram.com/paradisecovehotel www.facebook.com/ParadiseCoveHotel

A WARM WELCOME

I was invited to stay at the newly opened adults-only Sunrise Attitude, a four-star hotel committed to tourism with a positive impact with 153 rooms commanding prime position on the east coast. It’s opposite the powder-white sandy beach at Belle Mare boasting picture-perfect views of the clear lagoon which I couldn’t wait to swim in. Beach volley is a pastime here, along with sundowners on the shore - the local Phoenix Beer is a must-try!

Stand-out features include eight villas with plunge pools where you can wake up to room service. The 28 swimup rooms are another fab offering for honeymooners, linking each terrace to the main Papaya Pool and swim-up bar, plus there’s also Bar 31 boasting a stunning view of the beach and pool.

As with all eight Attitude properties, Sunrise Attitude has been designed in keeping with the local surroundings, marrying earthy tones with on-trend, hand-crafted furnishings created by local artisans using locally sourced materials including raffia. In their bid to eliminate single-use plastic, this eco resort provides you with a reusable water bottle and tea and coffee are collected from reusable glass jars at the Bulk Shop - don’t miss sampling the local passionfruit, mango and vanilla tea!

DINE IN STYLE

I had high expectations for an authentic tapas-style dinner at the brand’s signature Kot Nou restaurant (present at all Attitude hotels) and I wasn’t disappointed – you can take a cookery class here to learn the local recipes.

Similar to Paradise Cove, the DineAround option allows you to pick between three restaurants on a halfboard basis where you’ll be spoilt for choice! The Market restaurant specialises in local and international delicacies using the freshest seasonal and sustainable ingredients – I tucked into vegan pancakes for breakfast.

The Social House restaurant and bar is an informal setting playing live music during the evening where I shared tasty vegan platters, and my favourite spot for lunch had to be Taba-j, the brightly painted kiosk serving traditional takeout street food. I couldn’t get enough of the local roti washed down with alouda (a Mauritian milkshake). Experience one of your first meals as newlyweds with an invite to a local team member’s home for an Otentik dinner. My host was Concita Fortuno, who welcomed me for a wonderful evening of food, music and dance – she even taught me how to cook gateaux piment (chilli bites!)

EARLY TO RISE

I couldn’t wait to experience the Secret Sunrise guided meditation to music on the beach – even if it did mean getting up earlier than normal! Chilling out wearing headphones, it was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s free and takes place twice a week and a private 20-minute session can be arranged, with large groups invited to experience the interactive dance session.

LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN

I indulged in treatments at the new Spa POZ (meaning to relax and take a break). Dotted within this tranquil leafy space are single and double open-air creole treatment huts, a salt hammam (that helps to soothe skin problems) and a beauty salon. The vegan spa products packaged in reusable tins are handmade on the island using local plants with 5% of each purchase at Spa POZ (and from the Otentik Bazaars selling souvenirs) donated to

Why not split your stay between the three and four-star Attitude hotels that cater for most budgets in adults-only and family-friendly properties? Coin de Mire Attitude offers great value for money (https://hotels-attitude. com/en/ coin-de-mire-attitude) while Lagoon Attitude boasts 182 rooms including ten romantic whirlpool suites (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/lagoon-attitude). It’s home to the Marine Discovery Centre, dedicated to the preservation of the marine ecosystem from where I set sail on a glass-bottom boat for a snorkelling trail to marvel at the underwater world. If you’re lucky, you might spot some whales from the boat ride too!

I was fortunate to visit Tropical Attitude with its 58 sea-facing rooms and 11 villas with private pools where a floating breakfast can be served (https://hotels-attitude.com/en/ tropical-attitude). A complimentary boat trip departs twice daily from here to the untouched Ile aux Cerfs where I sunbathed on the pure white sand.

If you’re searching for a fun-filled family-moon then head to Zilwa Attitude (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/zilwa-attitude) which faces the northern islands. I couldn’t wait to take the raft over to Gran Zil for a beach barbecue lunch and chill out in an over-water hammock - I didn’t want to leave. ROMANCE Rural

Olivia Gibson discovers the delights of Provence at Hôtel Crillon le Brave

Known for its diverse landscapes, picturesque views, iconic lavender fields, vineyards and Mediterranean coastline, Provence is the ultimate honeymoon destination that oozes romance at every turn. When the opportunity arose to visit Maisons Pariente’s Hotel Crillon le Brave, I packed my bags and headed to the airport alongside my partner for a magical stay at the sought-after property.

After a short flight and transfers to the five-star destination, we were welcomed by the oh-so-accommodating staff, who gave us a personal tour of the hotel. The charming spaces captured our hearts from the moment we arrived – it was like something out of a movie! The architecture made from blond Crillon stone is perched at the top of the village, boasting captivating views of Mont-Ventoux and the surrounding rolling countryside. Every corner of the private setting offered a stunning backdrop to escape the outside world and disconnect for a while.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED

While strolling through the labyrinth of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, hand-in-hand, we had to take a step back to bask in the gentle breeze, chirping birds and the occasional church bells. Together it created the ideal atmosphere to relax while enjoying a delicious Provençal buffet for breakfast on the panoramic terrace. What better way to start the morning than by eating delicious food while enjoying such breathtaking and wide-ranging views? We tucked into homemade pastries, fresh fruit and granola on our first morning before enjoying a cooked breakfast with freshly baked breads on our second day ‒ the Nyons olive bread is a must try!

PAMPERING PLANS

The Spa des Écuries is the perfect location to relax with various beauty,

body and facial treatments. Located in an ancient 18th-century stonevaulted stable with three treatment rooms, one of which is a double room, the team has paid close attention to the spa with cosy features and charming touches to create a calming atmosphere. After being greeted by the beauty therapist, I was whisked away to a room for an expertly executed massage. During my hour-long treatment, the masseuse went to town tackling my problem areas using traditional massage techniques to help me relax, reduce muscle tension throughout my body, and promote blood circulation. I felt all my worries melt away, as well as my knots. An aroma of essential oils filled the dark-lit room and I almost drifted off! The intimate setting combines gentle and effective approaches to enhancing overall wellbeing – I felt fully disconnected from the outside world, bliss!

REST AND RELAX

With 17 bedrooms and 17 suites, the hotel offers a stunning range of spaces for all celebrations. Our beautiful suite was complete with a spacious bedroom, lounge area and bathroom with all the amenities needed. The interior was something out of a storybook with a charming style, plush furnishing, neutral materials, an ornate fireplace and a green colour scheme. The red floor tiles are typical of Provence and can be seen throughout the space, through to the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub, double sinks and a spacious shower. The luxurious touches continued to the living room with a flat-screen TV, minibar, tasteful artwork, comfortable sofas and armchairs. With the summer approaching, we were thankful for the adjustable air conditioning too!

Sleeping in the large, king-sized bed was like laying on a fluffy cloud. The large windows overlooking the valley allowed plenty of natural light for a gentle and calming morning wake-up call, leaving us feeling wellrested and rejuvenated.

MAKING A SPLASH

I was desperate to catch some rays after the winter months, and the pool area at Hôtel Crillon le Brave was just what we needed! The heated, turquoise water overlooked the surrounding countryside and provided just enough space to get some morning lengths in. We spent most of our time in the tranquil setting, whether having a dip or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere with a good book. With multiple sun loungers scattered around, guests can easily find the perfect location to sit, whether it’s in the sun or under an umbrella.

For the fitness-fanatics, the on-site fitness room boasts all the equipment needed to break a sweat; I recommend enjoying some morning yoga to start the day off before breakfast.

Alternatively, I would recommend taking part in some friendly competition with a game of Pétanque, a French sport with the objective of getting boules closest to a target. I’m happy to announce that I won most of our games!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive foodie, I was excited to try the local cuisine. Hôtel Crillon le Brave has two on-site restaurants offering local produce. Head chef Adrien Brunet has presented new menus with locally sourced delicacies, inviting guests on a gourmet journey through Provence. La Madeleine is a Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant that offers a spectacular experience on a panoramic terrace with must-see views. Expertly balancing textures and flavours, the team has created a gourmet menu with extraordinary dishes exquisitely presented.

The bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, has a relaxed atmosphere, and Adrien has created a classic menu inspired by the best of southern France. We were privileged to dine at the restaurant twice. On the first night, I enjoyed the tempura scampi for starter, with shiso and juice extract, before tucking it into the Ardèche trout with watercress ravioli and lemongrass broth. I finished off the meal with a soft and fluffy Fraisier cake, which melted in my mouth! On our second evening, I opted for the fish bouillabaisse with a delicious sauce and spring vegetables, followed by the lamb Wellington with chlorophyll, nut-brow buttered polenta, and bay leaf. What better way to finish the meal than with a lemon cheesecake finger adorned with gold flakes? Thanks to the attentive staff

and passionate chefs, the service was impeccable on both evenings. My favourite beverage of the trip was the La Douceur de Crillon, a must-try cocktail featuring white peach, apricot from Roussillon, homemade lavender syrup and prosecco – yum! After our meals, we spent time in the bar area, the oldest house in the hotel. Located on the ground floor of the Maison Roche, this gorgeous space provides a cosy setting to relax with a drink in hand, especially with the extensive wine menu! An equally wonderful setting to relax during the day with a game of chess, whilst taking a break from the sun.

THE FINAL VERDICT

After such a memorable experience, I cannot recommend Hôtel Crillon le Brave enough! It’s the ultimate setting for romantic honeymoons, with a rural location, spectacular views, delicious dishes, charming buildings and a tranquil setting. The magical trip will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we have many memories to treasure for years – we will definitely be returning!

BODY BLISS Total

Louise Prance visited Warwickshire’s Ardencote Spa, where she experienced total body bliss and a weekend of wellness…

Located in Warwickshire, Ardencote Spa is easily accessible for a spa day or weekend away, however, upon arriving down the leafy drive, you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Set in 83 acres of landscaped gardens, Ardencote is a modern hotel and destination spa offering everything needed for a weekend of wellness after the big day. A pool, treatment rooms,18-hole golf course, leisure facilities, tennis courts and a restaurant and bar await for a blissful UK-based honeymoon.

Upon arrival my partner and I were shown to our sizeable, wellequipped room, one of 110 at the hotel, that overlooked the stunning outdoor pool and jacuzzi. After settling in, this was exactly where we headed first. Whilst the weather was on the cold side for the pool, the temperature of the jacuzzi was just right for a lengthy soak, glass of fizz in hand.

Not much could have dragged us away from this lap of luxury, but a full body massage was calling and much needed. Of all the massages I’ve had, this one was up there and highly recommended. If the jacuzzi float had left any aches and pains, the massage certainly rid me of any further niggles!

Furthering our relaxation, we induldged in the many spa rooms, including the Himalayan salt sauna, and after final dip in the atmospheric indoor pool the sun loungers were just perfect for whiling away the hours with a good book or post-wedding reminiscing.

Feeling a world away from the stresses of everyday life, we enjoyed a luxurious afternoon nap on the sumptuous bed, before getting ready for a delicious dinner at the 1 Rosette Brasserie, which complements the existing and ever-popular Conservatory Bar. I was treated to a delicious vegan burger, while my companion enjoyed a mouth-watering tagine, of course polished off with sizeable desserts.

Heading to the bar for a night cap, the aura of calm permeates every aspect of Ardencote and it wasn’t long before we took ourselves to bed,

feeling fully rested, content and peaceful.

After a leisurely lie-in the next morning, we headed down for breakfast before another dip in the pool and a stroll around the extensive grounds. If you’re so inclined, you can take part in racket sports tennis, squash and racquetball or table tennis, or take in a round of golf ‒ the winddown options are endless.

AN ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY

Ardencote dates back to 1863, when it was built as the dowry house for Mary the daughter of Thomas Phillips, a wool manufacturer from Manchester. Having passed through many hands, and having undergone many extensions and updates since then, the beautiful estate was purchased by local entrepreneur Mr Huckerby in 1996. The Huckerby family still retains ownership, making Ardencote a truly family-run, independent hotel.
