Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.
THE
WALLED GARDEN
Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours.
Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place.
Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.
EVENTS ARENA
At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away.
Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn.
Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

The joys of spring
To quote one of my favourite movies, Miss Congeniality, and Rhode Island’s Cheryl, when asked to describe her perfect date: “I’d have to say April 25th. Because it’s not too hot, not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” While hilarious in the context of the film, I do have to agree with her, because she’s perfectly described how I’ve always felt about spring. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I hate, hate, hate hot weather; and while I love the winter, the dark nights can get you down. So, for me spring is the ideal happy medium: not too hot, not too cold. And that’s before we even get started on everything else it brings such as the beauty of new life and the joy of Easter. In short, what a wonderful time of year for a wedding!
We’re particularly blessed in Britain with definition in our seasons so we get to experience spring in all it’s glory where so many countries around the world don’t get to enjoy its subtleties in quite the same way. This is when British blooms come into their own. Think of the oh-so on trend loose wildflower style of bouquet bursting with anemones, tulips, sweet peas, narcissi and ranuculus, not forgetting the eternally popular wedding flower, peonies. Aisle runners featuring the same create the ambience of walking barefoot through a meadow and when transferred to the reception tables they create that wonderful soft English country garden feel. Why not take inspiration for your wedding palette from the hues found in nature throughout the spring months? Lemon, blush, peach, lavender, sage green... the list goes on. What’s more, this year’s Pantone colour of the year Viva Magenta is so versatile it works beautifully alongside pastels as a bold accent.
I could go on, but I’ll leave it to the local professionals as they share their springtime wedding ideas over in Hot Topic from page 67. Plus, when I think of spring weddings, I think of an overabundance of seasonal flowers, and that’s just what we’ve got for you in one of our incredible styled shoots for you this issue starting over on page 53, so dive in.
Enjoy and keeeep planning!

CHALK AND CHEESE
Wiston Estate has announced that critically acclaimed chef Tom Kemble has joined the team at Chalk Restaurant as executive chef, bringing more than 15 years of experience at some of the world’s most prestigious restaurants to West Sussex. Formerly head chef at Bonhams Restaurant, which he led to earn a Michelin star within seven months of opening, Tom brings his precise cooking style, ingredient-led approach and dedication to celebrating local produce to Chalk.
Located on the Wiston Estate’s North Farm winery site, 122-cover restaurant Chalk opened in December 2021 and draws its name from the soft white limestone that the vineyard sits on, which gives its award-winning wines their distinctive, terroir-driven profile. The eatery occupies a renovated 18thcentury threshing barn, which has been thoughtfully restored to create a warm and welcoming space.
Considered yet approachable, the Chalk menu celebrates the nature, heritage and community of the Estate, using ingredients from its allotment-style walled garden and neighbouring artisan suppliers. Meats such as venison, Herdwick lamb, pheasant and White Park beef are all sourced from the Estate, while the likes of Heritage pumpkin, beetroots, Dazzling Blue kale and Hinnonmaki gooseberry are grown in the walled garden.

WINNING STREAK
Field Place Manor House & Barns in Worthing has recently won its third successive national accolade at the 2023 Wedding Industry Awards. The prestigious awards are held annually in celebration of the most talented and hard-working suppliers in the industry. In November 2022, Field Place won the South East regional award for Best Events Team, which secured them a place at the national finals in January 2023.
The winners are voted for by couples married during October 2021 and October 2022 at the nominated venues; their scoring and feedback is then passed on to a judging panel who decide who is to receive the accolades. This year, no fewer than 1,300 suppliers entered and 26,543 couples had their say, with 135 industry experts deliberating over the submissions.
Amanda Millis, weddings and events manager at Field Place Manor House & Barns said, “We’re over the moon to have won a national title for the third time, and for three different categories. This award is special to us as we really do work hard to give our couples the wedding of their dreams.”

SPRING IS IN THE AIR
Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate has announced its wedding services for 2023. The venue, located near Horsham in West Sussex in an area of outstanding natural beauty, offers sublime views across the 500-acre Estate.
The venue has benefited from investment in new facilities by its owners, the Streeter family, of late. The 17th-century mansion house features original fireplaces, wooden beam ceilings and ornate chandeliers, and there are two function rooms licensed for wedding ceremonies. Goldings and the Latilla Campbell Suite have a capacity of 30 to 110 guests, as well as extensive outside terraces for drinks receptions for up to 200 loved ones.
This year’s packages see the venue offering a choice of set threecourse wedding breakfast options for 60 guests from £7,250 including VAT and service charges. This includes a half-bottle per person of award-winning Benguela Cove wine and a glass of Cuvée58 sparkling wine for the toast, both from the owner’s South African vineyards. There’s also a choice of round or long tables, with white table linen and limewash Chiavari chairs.
The Estate also offers the support of an experienced wedding
WINE AND DINE
Renowned Sussex vineyard, Tinwood Estate, has recently opened a new onsite restaurant. Serving lunch every day and dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, there are 50 covers in the restaurant and picnic baskets supplied for those days when nothing could be better than sitting among the vines with delicious food and sparkling wine.
The new restaurant is situated in the existing picturesque tasting room near Chichester, which boasts a vast south-facing terrace overlooking the vines. Serving modern British tapas using locally-sourced produce including fish, meat and vegetables, its menu will constantly change and evolve according to what’s in season, available and tasting best. Choose three or four small plates, which will of course match your wines, and you can enjoy your food while having a tutored wine tasting, at your own leisure, or from a private spot among the vines.

coordinator to help with planning and taking care of all on-the-day arrangements. Wedding events manager Jo Chellingworth shared some of her top planning tips with us: “Figure out your vision for the day. Whether you want it to be small and intimate or big and lavish, you should decide exactly what kind of vibe you want right from the start. That way, when it comes to actually planning elements such as invitations, catering and décor, you can focus on making sure those aspects match up with your vision,”
She goes on to say, “Start early! You’ll be surprised at how much time you need to plan your dream wedding, so the earlier you begin, the better. Make sure you have a budget in place before you start booking the venue and getting quotes from suppliers.
“Write everything down. Keep a notebook with your ideas and plans, so that you don’t forget anything important. Make a list of everything you need to do, and try to focus on one task at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed by the details: with the help of the wedding venue’s event team and suppliers, the details will take care of themselves!”

TREETOP MINIMOON ESCAPE
Cowdray Estate in Midhurst, West Sussex, has recently opened a four new tree houses, in collaboration with Tree House Retreats. Each one offers secluded accommodation in the heart of the 16,500-acre Estate, bringing Scandi-chic interiors to the surrounding woodland. The décor combines natural materials and antique furniture with contemporary artwork and locally-sourced designs. Floor-to-ceiling windows, wraparound balconies, and outdoor bathtubs complete the tree houses, and offer views over Cowdray’s worldrenowned polo fields, the historical Cowdray ruins and beyond to the South Downs.
The quirky new accommodation sleeps two adults each and contains a spacious open plan living room and kitchen, a double bedroom with a king-size bed, and a bathroom with walk-in shower. Built using sustainably-sourced timber from the Estate, the tree houses were developed using a fabric first approach, maximising enery efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The modern art that adorns the walls has been sourced in conjunction with Migrate Art, who collaborate with the world’s most significant contemporary artists to raise money for displaced and homeless communities across the globe.
What’s more, guests will have access to their own personal electric vehicle to transport them between their cars and the woodland location, and bicycles to explore Cowdray and all its offerings. These include classic country pursuits, such as polo, golf and clay pigeon shooting, alongside wellness retreats, art classes, foraging walks through the grounds and stargazing.
The tree houses are available to book online at www.treehouseretreats.com/book. Rates start at £388 per night, with a minimum three-night stay.
ASK THE EXPERTS
The team at RRS Music Management and Events in Worthing are welcoming a new agent, Matt Wells. Matt is an established function/wedding singer who impressively performed at 50 gigs last year everywhere from pubs to weddings and corporate events. He’s been with RRS a little while already as a guitar tutor, as well as a live act, and he’s now set to make a fantastic addition to the company as its newest booking agent.
Matt says, “I’m a live artist myself, and have been around the block a few times. I’ve been playing for more than 25 years, with experience of the pub circuit on the south coast, as well as playing in function bands all over the South of England. With this in mind, I’ve spent a fair bit of time looking for gigs for myself, and now look forward to doing the same for our roster.”
RRS owner, Rose-Ann Raymond-Silvester says, “We as a company have had the privilege of being part of a lot of people’s special days and we look forward to seeing many more beautiful couples get married, as we help to make the memories that count.”

Your Sussex Wedding chats to... LAURA HEDGER FROM ONE MOMENT IN TIME BRIDAL BOUTIQUE
Being a curvy lady herself, Laura found shopping for wedding dresses to be a stressful experience. It’s often the case that boutiques only carry one or two sample sizes in each dress, so it can be difficult to get a good feel for your final big-day look if what's in store isn't close to your own usual size. So, she decided to change all of that and opened her own boutique, One Moment In Time, stocking each sample gown in sizes 8 to 30, so there really is something for everyone. “I feel passionate about making sure every bride feels amazing, no matter what their size,” Laura says. We chatted to her recently about everything from shopping sustainably to dealing with lack of body confidence. Click play or scan the QR code to see the full interview. DEANS PLACE, ALFRISTON
01323 870 248
| www.deansplace.co.uk
Deans Place Hotel is a four-star country house surrounded by four acres of beautiful gardens. Nestled in the historical village of Alfriston, on the banks of the River Cuckmere in the South Downs National Park, its idyllic location offers a wonderfully picturesque backdrop for any wedding. The venue’s exclusive packages give you the run of the house for the day, with its cosy bar and lounge, a gorgeous restaurant and two bright function rooms offering views of the surrounding landscape. Following your ceremony, you can leave guests to enjoy drinks on the lawn, while you head off to seek some of the endless photo opportunities within the grounds and nearby.
ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
The Hotel dates back more than six centuries and is steeped in history. The team are often asked, “Who is Dean?” But the exact history of the name is a mystery, having been lost throughout the years. One theory is that Deans comes from the old Saxon word Dene, which means lowland. There was also a previous owner who went by the name of John de Dene and owned the estate around 1355.
WHERE TO WED
In the warmer months you can marry beneath the Wedding Garden
Gazebo, surrounded by glorious gardens and views of the South Downs. There’s space here for 120 guests to join you.
The Alfriston Suite can also accommodate 120 and is the Hotel’s largest function room. With oak floor, oodles of natural light and stunning views it’s a lovely option at any time of year.
The Garden Suite is a more intimate ceremony spot for 75 nearest and dearest. A bright and airy space it too offers panoramic views of the South Downs
A SPACE TO CELEBRATE
The two suites can also host your reception. The Alfriston Suite is neutrally decorated to suit any palette or theme. It can seat 120 guests at round or long banqueting tables for the wedding breakfast. For the evening this space transforms into your party room with wooden dancefloor and inroom bar for up to 200 guests.
The Garden Suite, again ideal for more intimate celebrations, can seat 45 to join you for your first meal together as newlyweds. For the evening do, guests can move through to the Alfriston Suite.
The venue offers a menu tasting for you both, bedrooms for the night before and morning of to get ready, a bridal suite for the two of you on the wedding night, all complimentary, as well as the services of a professional toastmaster on the big day.

In addition to its stunning riverside setting and amazing views, the Bury Manor Barn site includes several distinct areas including, an amphitheatre with lighting for extending the time guests can spend outside, a walled garden, a fabulous covered terrace area, a woodland area with a wonderful avenue of beech trees, and a pond and jetty with weeping willow.
ONE
FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
The barn and its idyllic surroundings are located in the grounds of Dorset House School, one of the oldest prep schools in the country. Steeped in history, records of the Manor date back to the Domesday Book.
WHERE TO WED
Civil ceremonies, accompanied by 130 loved ones, take place in the
beautiful inner barn or outside at the amphitheatre with stunning views across the Wildbrooks and River Arun to Amberley Castle and the South Downs beyond.
A SPACE TO CELEBRATE
Receptions are hosted in either the Outer or Inner Barn. The Outer Barn can seat 140 nearest and dearest around trestle tables, or 120 seated at banquet rounds. The Inner Barn can seat 108 loved ones at banquet rounds if it’s not being used for the “I dos.”
The 16th-century barn structure is divided by a glazed wall and you have the freedom to decorate according to your chosen theme whether it be traditional, rustic or a day bursting with colour. The building has retained its original wooden beams, which you’re free to dress adding to the overall aesthetic. There’s also a superb state-of-the-art LED lighting system in place for you to utilise.
During your day you’ll have exclusive use of the barn, lower lawns, covered terrace, walled garden and woodland area. There’s a generous amount of time allocated for setting up and collection the following day, plus you’re offered a complimentary wine tasting with Digby Fine English.
HORSTED PLACE
01825 750 581 | www.horstedplace.co.uk/weddings
Horsted Place Hotel is located two miles south of Uckfield and is as well a connected destination as you could wish for when loved ones are travelling from all over to be with you. Steeped in history, with a stunning Victoria Gothic backdrop, it offers an idyllic setting throughout the seasons. Step beyond the redbrick facade and you enter a world of giltframed paintings and roaring fires. Converted into a hotel in the 1980s it still bears the hallmarks of its auspicious past, yet has one foot firmly in the future. It’s available for the exclusive use of your wedding party, which means you get your own fully-staffed country house and garden for the day, including the bedrooms.
ONE FOR THE HISTORY BOOKS
Built in 1850 for Francis Barchard, Horsted Place is one of the finest examples of Gothic revivalist architecture you’ll find in Britain today, thanks to its architect Samuel Daukes, a keen follower of the movement. In
structure it remains little changed to this day. Indeed, if Mr Barchard were able to see it now, he’d surely be able to instantly recognise his beautiful home.
WHERE TO WED
Take your pick from three areas licensed for ceremonies: the intimate Library, the larger, newly refurbished Garden Room with French doors leading out onto the formal gardens and the Victorian-style summerhouse, in front of which the “I dos” can take place outside on the lawn.
A SPACE TO CELEBRATE
The team love to offer you flexibility to create the wedding of your dreams and appreciate that a large celebration isn’t for everyone. Therefore, they’re careful to cater for guest numbers from 80 to 120. For a private, more intimate wedding, the gorgeous, wood-panelled library is the perfect place. Or on a glorious summer’s day, why not consider the croquet lawn for al fresco celebrations?

THE KEY TO
my heart
Lucy and Adam said “I do” at Pilgrims Rest on 24th September, 2022
Images courtesy of NDavies Photography
30
Lucy and Adam’s romance began as so many others do in our modern world – on Tinder. They met in person a month or so after they started chatting online when Adam invited Lucy to his band’s gig not far from where she was studying at university. “We didn’t speak much on the night we met, he was a bit busy on stage. But I did speak to a lot of his family members, which was a bit strange considering I’d not met him properly yet,” Lucy remembers. “I must have been blown away by his performance though as we decided to go for our first real date the following day.”
Adam proposed at home in their flat. The couple had both booked the day off work as they were going to the Warner Bros Studio Tour, The Making of Harry Potter. So, Lucy was enjoying a lazy morning relaxing on the sofa before they set off, and Adam was making pancakes. “When he came in with them, he set down a Polaroid photo of us laughing together. It was captioned: ‘Mrs Ross?’ Then, he got down on one knee, and waited for my reaction, which may have included some expletives!” Lucy shares. Although she knew they may get engaged at some point, she hadn’t been expecting it at 9am in her pyjamas! Read on as the bride tells us all about their beautiful wedding day...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Pilgrims Rest is a hidden gem in the quaint, historical town of Battle, which is also where Lucy grew up. The venue is a stunning 600-year-old Wealden hall house with endless original features such as inglenook fireplaces and ancient beams. Lucy tells us more, “The thought of a huge wedding was daunting to us and Pilgrim’s Rest is just the right size. It has a cosy, homely feel and felt magical to us when we viewed it. We could also have our wedding photos taken inside and outside the magnificent Battle Abbey next door, you just have to email them to reserve your date.”
Another reason for choosing Pilgrim’s Rest was the enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff. Hire of the venue includes styling and props, which are rotated according to the season and personalised to its couples’ tastes. Lucy continues, “It’s flexible too when it comes to suppliers and was the only venue we viewed that allowed us to choose any caterer we wanted, but they do have a list of recommended suppliers if you get a little stuck. Plus, they don’t charge corkage – bonus!”
SETTING THE SCENE
The ceremony room was already decorated beautifully with foliage and lanterns provided by the venue. They also offer benches or chairs for couples to choose from as well as a choice between two types of decorative rugs. Lucy added to the benches some biodegradable confetti bags in autumnal hues complete with personalised stickers.
For the reception in the Dining Room, there were two long banquet-style tables and a top table for the bride and groom and their parents. They ordered some custom-sized, forest green cheesecloth as table runners with matching napkins. The bridesmaids placed their fresh flower bouquets in vases along each table once the ceremony was over, to serve as centrepieces. Along the tables, the couple arranged a diverse selection of gold candlesticks, which they collected from various boot sales and charity shops, with orange taper candles. Each guest had a place name made from hexagonal-shaped acrylic. Lucy painted them in orange metallic on one side

and placed a vinyl cut out of their names on the other. Everyone was also gifted a bottle opener in the shape of a key with a label attached that read: “The key to happiness is love, and the ability to open a bottle.”
To sit behind the bride and groom’s seats Adam created an LED neon sign saying: “Mr & Mrs Ross est. 2022,” which sat on a copper pipe arch decorated with flowers. “We enjoyed adding these personal touches to the Dining Room, such as hanging up our baby photos, framed photographs of our parents at their weddings and photos of our lost loved ones.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Following the ceremony, the newlyweds headed off for the couple shots in the Abbey while their guests enjoyed prosecco and waffle pops in the garden. The wedding breakfast was three courses, and Lucy and Adam had decided to intersperse the speeches between each course. Lucy says, “The food by Mark’s Meals went down very well, the most complimented course being the mains, which were braised beef in a red wine sauce for meat-eaters and baked aubergine parmigiana for the vegetarians.”
In the evening, once the party had started, a local Italian restaurant delivered 60 pizzas for guests to graze on. “It was affordable and everyone loved it,” Lucy remembers.
The big-day bake featured two tiers. The bottom was chocolate and banana caramel flavour, while the top was a red velvet cake topped with a gold Mr & Mrs Ross. For an extra showstopping touch the main bake was surrounded by salted caramel flavour cupcakes.
LOOKING THE PART
Lucy looked stunning in her Essense of Australia gown, style number D3145. After many, many bridal boutique visits, she managed to narrow down her preferred style to A-line, in an off-white shade, with sleeves. “I found the dress before I found the boutique,” she says. “I phoned ahead to make sure it was in stock and arranged an appointment. I knew as soon as I tried it on that it was the one, which was a relief.”
The bride accessorised with a gold pearl necklace bought for her by her mum. It featured a long chain down the back, which looked gorgeous against the low back of the gown. Her sister bought her some matching pearl earrings and she completed the look with a leafy gold hairpiece from Etsy. “I wore some small heels for the ceremony, but the gems kept getting caught on my dress, so I wish I’d gotten straight into my evening shoes – white Converse with embroidered hearts, a gift from my mother-in-law,” Lucy tells us.
The groom, his best man and his father’s grey, checked three-piece suits all came from Burton. Due to the fatherof-the-bride’s height, he had a different suit, but wore the matching waistcoat allowing him to fit in as the important member of the party he was. Adam made the men and mothers-of-the-bride and -groom buttonholes from dried, orange flowers and foliage. He also wore classic Doc Marten slip-on shoes.
The bridesmaids were all dressed in variations of Ever Pretty orange dresses having chosen whichever one they felt most comfortable in. “They were stunning and looked beautiful together,” Lucy shares.
33 REAL WEDDINGS
“All of our suppliers were brilliant and went above and beyond to make our day special.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
A live band entertained all assembled during the evening. The couple emailed them a playlist of songs for when they weren’t performing, and when they were, they took requests from guests. “They could quite literally play any song on the planet. They were brilliant,” Lucy says. They even let Adam perform a couple of numbers with them, which went down a treat.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
The ceremony was the highlight of the day for Lucy. She says, “Our registrar was brilliant and gave us a beautiful, moving service. Having our closest friends and family involved, such as my nephew carrying the rings, the beautiful readings by my friend and sister-in-law and seeing my bridesmaids together on the stairs was just lovely. Thinking about making our vows still gives me goose bumps!”
The best man’s speech too was a memorable moment for all as he picked up his guitar and started strumming while chatting to the guests. He’s Adam’s best friend and band mate and explained how it was music that brought them together and solidified their friendship. Everyone was expecting a song, but he’d actually written a lovely and funny poem.”

HOW DEEP IS
your love?
Ali and James tied the knot at Blackstock Country Estate on 24th June, 2022 Images courtesy of Stephanie Kalber
James proposed to Ali at the Grand Canyon, while on holiday in Las Vegas. The couple had booked a helicopter tour, and James was feeling very nervous, but then he’s a nervous flyer, so Ali didn’t notice anything unusual. When they landed he asked someone to take a photo of them both, and when Ali turned around, there he was, down on one knee.
The pair had first been to Blackstock Country Estate for a charity dinner back in 2016. They’d been together about two years at the time and Ali distinctly remembers saying to James, “This would be exactly the type of place I’d love to get married.” Despite this, they originally ruled the venue out as there was nowhere for guests to stay on site. However, as luck would have it, when they decided to check out a wedding fair being held there, they discovered that some new accommodation had recently been added and everything fell into place for them. “I just knew it was the one for us,” Ali says. Join us as the bride shares her happy memories of the build up and the big day...
37 REAL WEDDINGS
I wore Asa, a Willowby by Watters design. I’d looked at these dresses online for years before even being engaged and knew I wanted to wear this designer. The gowns are so elegant and intricate. I accesorised with celestial-style earrings and a gold diamanté hair clip, but no other jewellery as the dress was enough by itself.
The bridesmaids had gypsophila bouquets, whereas mine featured plenty of foliage and white flowers.
Our photographer was very good at giving me tips on the day for anything that came up! Stephanie helped with the dresses and making sure people were exactly where they needed to be when they needed to be there.
The gentlemen all wore navy suits with a very subtle check running through them, paired with floral ties.
The bridesmaids wore sage green dresses from ASOS.
Our table plan bore a simple design with a eucalyptus print.
38
To entertain our guests we booked a magician and photo booth, they were both absolutely amazing. Our magician, Alexander, was especially good at getting guests chatting to each other too.
Our three-tier semi-naked cake was adorned in edible flowers.
Our favours were sparklers, but these got rained off so James and I headed out alone with an umbrella
We used wood slices, tea lights and greenery for our centrepieces.
39 REAL WEDDINGS
I think we were both full of equal amounts of anxiety and excitement. It took me until around 4pm to start relaxing!
“We went to Mexico for two weeks, which was absolutely amazing. We planned it together and would happily do it all over again!”
Try not to worry about the small details, on the day they really don’t matter. Also, get a bridesmaid to be in charge of keeping your glass topped up!

Dazzling Art Deco
Rachael and Marc enjoyed the best of Brighton’s venues on their oh-so chic wedding day Images courtesy of Hannah Phipps Photography
Rachael and Marc met more than a decade ago at a meet and greet with The Libertines’ drummer. The two connected instantly, but they lived in different cities and sadly lost contact. However, four years later they ran into each other again by sheer chance and have never looked back.
Rachael proposed outside The Royal Pavilion on 29th February, 2020 – leap year. “I was very nervous, and it was a windy, gloomy day, but the sun came out for the proposal,” Rachael remembers.
The two of them both love the historical building that served as such an important backdrop for them, as well as its interiors. At the time though, they weren’t aware they could get married there. As soon as they found out they wasted no time in booking their big day. When it came to finding a reception space, they were on the lookout for somewhere to accommodate a live band and chose The Grand Brighton. Another of the city’s historical landmarks, it boasts a wealth of Art Deco features, which was the perfect fit for the couple’s theme.
Here, the bride gives us the lowdown on their very special day...
43 REAL WEDDINGS
I wore a Suzanne Neville dress. It was a bespoke gown combining two styles I love: the Carmella top and Eternity skirt. I wanted a simple, contemporary style and loved the hidden corset, which was so comfortable and made me feel really confident.
The groom wore a Jaeger suit with green velvet jacket that made him stand out from his groomsmen, who were all dressed in black tuxedos with black bow ties. I made their boutonnières using peacock feathers and gold Art Deco details.
44
For the place names, I purchased blank cards with gold trim and handwrote each name in an Art Deco-style script for a personal touch. As wedding favours, we gave our guests personalised seed ball boxes to help the bees.
The bridesmaids wore matching sage green dresses with gold accessories. We also had to match a bridesman suit to the dress, which was a challenge!
Our floral centrepieces were held by tall gold frames supplied by our
We hired a blue 1930s Rolls Royce convertible decorated with ivory ribbons and bows. It transported me and the bridesmaids to the Pavilion for the ceremony, then me and Marc to The Grand after we were married.
Marc is a bass player and his band, Guilt Coins, performed at our wedding. After the first dance, he got up on stage and played with them.
florist.
45 REAL WEDDINGS
“We both had the best day. All the people and suppliers involved in making it run smoothly did such an amazing job, and we’re so grateful.”
The groomsmen are all members of the band and their best men’s speech featured a top ten hits play-on-words of some of their favourite songs, including Marc Life! The guests were in stitches.
The cake was perfect. We met with Bunston Bakes six months prior to the wedding to discuss the design and flavours. We ended up going for a four-tier vegan bake with three flavours including Biscoff, lemon and chocolate.
Our tables were going to be numbered, so we bought some stickers and applied them to green wine bottles. We then sprayed the necks gold and filled with fairylights.
Charlotte at The Grand helped us last minute with a vendor cancellation for the photo booth, sourcing another one for us only a few days before the wedding. The day wouldn’t have been the same without it. Superstar!

My moon AND STARS
This stunning shoot mirrors The Observatory Science Centre’s history and hues to perfection
Images courtesy of DB Photography Sussex
Inspired by the The Observatory Science Centre, one of Sussex’s most characterful and unusual wedding venues, Jade Buss from DB Photography Sussex put together a styled shoot to reflect the era of its origin. She says, “It’s such a unique building, part of a very long history of the royal observatories. Construction began in the 1940s and was completed in the 1950s and when you think of this period you can’t help but picture its timeless glamour.”
A soft, feminine look for the bride was paired with strong suit for the groom, and while the team were keen to incorporate a modern take, maintaining the classic vibe was key. “For the colour palette, we wanted to play into the venue itself,” Jade continues. “The domes that dominate its main vista are coated in copper that’s weathered over time into gorgeous hues of green. So, we went with white, greens and copper to complement this.” Also, look out for the clever nods to astronomy with the model’s celestial jewellery along with a few pops of sparkle.

Rustic LUXE
Imbued with a sense of the natural world, this shoot shows off its elegantly rustic setting
Images courtesy of Jordan Mansfield Weddings
We wanted to create a very intimate editorial shoot, and it was important to us all to make this an inclusive project featuring a same sex couple,” shoot coordinator and venue stylist Sally Gallis from Luna and The Lane tells us. The concept was to use the stunning Southlands Barn as the rustic backdrop and add free-flowing, wild foliage to create a sense of nature. Meanwhile, the addition of texture introduced through the rugs and candle lighting in the ceremony space, as well as on the table design, welcomed in an atmosphere of softness and warmth. The chosen palette mirrored the setting beautifully, by including plenty of earthy neutrals and hues found in nature. These were stylishly juxtaposed with contemporary black and stone with a pop of warm, zingy marigold and burnt orange. Simply gorgeous.

EMILY’S MIXING BOWL
https://emilysmixingbowl.co.uk | @emilysmixingbowl
Have you ever thought about how you’ll display your big-day bake?
“Most people book their wedding cake and completely overlook where it’ll go or how it it’ll be shown off,” says wedding cake maker Emily Fitter. “I’ve been to far too many weddings where there’s a beautiful bake that someone has spent hours making, only for it to be presented in a dark corner next to a fire extinguisher. Don’t let that be your cake!”
There are a number of options when it comes to styling your big-day bake’s table and a lot of them don’t require too much effort or expertise, but are nevertheless sure to bring the wow factor. Emily shares her top tips below:
Ask the experts. If you’re using a venue stylist or prop hire company, ask them what ideas they have for your cake. How about a vintage dresser with flowers cascading from the drawers, a Singer sewing
machine table, an acrylic plinth or coloured boards to frame it?
Think about decorating the table with matching items from your wedding styling. Perhaps a table runner, candles, flowers or mini dessert table treats to match the main cake.
Display a menu card. Evoke your guests’ interest by having a card next to the cake listing its flavours. You could include a printed card with a sketch of the showstopper on a mini easel or framed. Alternatively, order an engraved acrylic sign where the possibilities are endless.
Raise it up. Ask your venue which stand they include in the package, sometimes they aren’t very fitting, so if it doesn’t suit ask your cake maker if they have something more interesting available to hire, they usually do.
Think outside the box with the cake’s location. Where will it look its best? Is it a 360-degree cake that would look great on the dancefloor or should it be next to a bright and airy window, or perhaps on display as guests enter the room?

Down on the sunny South Coast, tucked away on a side street, a mere stone’s throw from the beach, resides Bunting Boutique, where Sue Maullin lovingly hand makes the most exquisite one-off pieces of bunting.
Sue specialises in working with Liberty Tana Lawn and vintage fabrics, but also loves to make bespoke bunting especially for weddings. Sue says, “Bunting is just the ticket if you need to finish off your wedding space and I can make bespoke lengths to guarantee a perfect fit to transform your barn, marquee, dancefloor, top table, cake table and much more. Bunting is a fantastic way of pulling your colour palette together by complementing key accents such as flowers and bridesmaids’ dresses. I can work with you to create those finer details that help to make everything just right.
She continues, “My favourite finishing touches have to be working on my sustainable and personalised ranges. I like to think that all the bunting I make has a long life. It’s made to last and can be used time and time again for future parties and events after the big day. Plus, I love working with couples and using fabrics that mean something to them.
“Looking for something old, something new...? I can transform your loved and cherished old linen into a beautiful garland to decorate your wedding space, and to serve as a long-lasting reminder of your big day. By incorporating things like a crocheted doily, a gorgeous trim detail, or an area of hand embroidery, every piece has its own story, its own history, and we hope, a wonderful future.”

A fine ROMANCE
One of West Sussex’s newest wedding venues, Greentrees Estate, flung open its doors to a team of local wedding professionals for this styled shoot Images courtesy of VP Photography
WhenVix Paine of VP Photography and Cath Adam from Cath Adam @ The Bride Shop were invited to be recommended suppliers at new venue Greentrees Estate in Haywards Heath, they both headed over to meet general manager Janie. It wasn’t long before they all realised they shared a vision for a styled shoot at this stunning location, so Vix wasted no time in getting the wheels turning.
The idea was to create a romantic shoot featuring deep reds with plenty of smiles and laughter, all looking as natural as possible. Together they handpicked their models, hair and make-up artist, florist and transport to complement the vision and were lucky enough to have the venue already dressed by To Have and To Hire Weddings.
Featuring the work of a whole host of local lovelies including Cath Adam @ The Bride Shop’s gorgeous gowns, dapper suits from Apache Menswear and Vix’s breathtaking photography, the images can be enjoyed across these pages. “Sadly, the weather was totally against us, so we had to improvise a little, but I’m super-chuffed with the result,” Vix says.

TIMELINE
Map out an itinerary of the big day – how much time will be spent where and when – and share this with your transport company. Here, you’ll want to spend time considering if there are any factors along the way that will affect them, such as whether your ceremony and reception are in different locations and if you want the car to stay for photos. We recommend seeking out suppliers who will only book your vehicle into your wedding for the day, meaning they won’t be constantly clock-watching.
Discuss travel times with your transport provider and bear in mind some vehicles can travel faster than others. Just because your car can get from A to B in a certain time, it doesn’t mean a vintage motor or horse and carriage can cover the same distance as fast!
Finally on this note, be prepared. Check in with your driver or company the week of the wedding to make sure they have the correct address, timing and emergency phone numbers.
THE FINE PRINT
Jennifer Cooper from Something Blue Wedding Car Hire (www.somethingbluecarhire.com) in West Sussex says, “Make sure you understand the contract and whether you have a fixed price. Good providers are usually quite flexible. For example, they might be able to do multiple runs if the pick-up and drop-off locations are close enough to one another.”
Here are a few more things you’ll need to look out for:
How long do you have the transport for?
Is there a charge for unforeseen overtime?
Will there be an extra charge for photos?
How are you being charged? Is it a flat fee or based on mileage and petrol costs? How much is the deposit?
Does the supplier have a contingency plan in place in case of vehicle breakdown or driver illness?
REPUTATION
Always look for a reputable supplier you can rely on. Jennifer says, “Check out reviews. This will give you an idea of reliability, customer service and what to expect. Consider using a local supplier to reduce miles travelled as this may affect the price.”
We also recommend making arrangements to meet them if possible. It’s worth asking to see the vehicle you’ll be riding in on the day so there are no surprises. If they’re reluctant to show you, there’s something amiss! Wedding fairs offer a good opportunity for this.
everything runs smoothly with our top 10 tips for booking your wedding-day transport

Jennifer continues, “Make sure the car service you’re booking is chauffeur driven and appropriately insured. A chauffeur gives you the peace of mind of having an experienced driver behind the wheel.”
GET CREATIVE
Just as you would any element of your day, you can look for transport to fit your personalities as well as your wedding’s vibe. For rustic nuptials, think super-cool VW Campervans; for a vintage feel consider a Rolls Royce; or for a touch of the traditional and classic opt for a sleek, modern Mercedes.
ALL ABOARD!
Have a think about who you need to provide transport for. While this might largely depend on your budget, you may want to give a thought to your guests if your ceremony and reception are some distance apart, or if the venue is particularly difficult to reach. If you’re asking your loved ones to make a tricky journey, you might want to lend them a hand.
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN?
“Factors such as the size of your wedding party, where people are coming from and where they’re staying will determine how many cars you’ll need,” Jennifer tells us. “The bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride will usually travel together, and don’t forget the groom and best man –they’ll need transport too!
“Traditionally, the bride rides in the bridal car with her father, or whoever will be walking her down the aisle. Then, following the ceremony, the newlyweds will use this vehicle to travel to the reception venue if it’s at a different location. It’s best not to precede your guests, so you could stop for a nice glass of bubbly or some photos on the way. If the whole day is taking place at the same venue, a trip in a car for you both creates a natural break in proceedings and offers you some alone time. ”
Think about your budget and ask your prospective suppliers what they’d recommend. Some may be able to make repeat journeys to come back for different members of the wedding party, others may suggest you
www.daniellechambersweddingphotography.co.uk for
book multiple vehicles if this isn’t practical. To save money you could hire one vehicle for the bride, later for the newlyweds, and book taxis for your best guys and girls.
WHEN TO BOOK
“Sooner rather than later,” Jennifer says. “With most car companies being booked up to a year or even two in advance, you don’t want to miss out on your preferred option.” Remember, some suppliers will only have one vehicle, their pride and joy, and can only be in one place at one time so secure your date to avoid disappointment.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
“Most car providers are happy to decorate their vehicles in your preferred ribbon or tulle colours, some will even decorate with flowers,” Jennifer explains. “White is the traditional colour for the bridal car and you can add to this with colours from your palette. Bear in mind that some photographers will actually prefer a wedding car with a bit of colour as it will show off your dress to its best advantage.”
It’s also worth enquiring about the chauffeur’s attire! You don’t want anyone letting the side down, and full livery looks oh-so smart.
SNAP HAPPY
You’ve devoted as much care and attention to choosing your transport as to any other element of your day, so don’t miss out on capturing those all-important photographs. When booking, make sure you’ve allocated time for this.
If your ceremony and reception are at the same venue, why not ask if you can take a little trip together just the two of you, after the “I dos.” This time to soak up those first few moments as newlyweds will be precious and memorable. Plus, if you can bring your photographer along, there’ll be opportunities to get some couple shots at some fabulous locations along the way.
SURPRISE!
Looking for an extra special gift for your spouse-to-be and their party on the morning of the wedding? A sports car to get them to the ceremony on time will certainly be one to remember for the motoring enthusiast!

HOT TOPIC
This issue we asked the experts how to inject your wedding days with the spirit of spring
BRIGHT AND BREEZY
Charlotte and Callum from C&C Imagery (www.candcimagery.co.uk) say: During the spring the light starts to get brighter, flowers begin to bloom and days get longer. This time of year can be a beautiful time to get married thanks to slightly warmer days. Take advantage of seasonal flowers and the freshness of the air, which can be reflected through your wedding photography as your photographer is able to create beautiful bright and airy images.
The weather can be unpredictable, but we say: embrace it, it can be a wonderful thing! There are many different colour palettes that work perfectly for a spring wedding, our personal favourite being an English garden with a romantic flair using bright and soft colours to showcase in your photographs. This can be blooming magical!
MUM’S THE WORD
Helen Downes at Any Occasion Boutique (www.anyoccasionboutique.com) says: The huge trends for the 2023 mothers-of-the-bride and groom see a return to soft, flowing fabrics, and maxi-style dresses in bold floral prints. After the last few sombre years, pastels are on the wane with bright colours and geometric patterns now proving more popular. Our leading designers Linea Raffaelli and Couture Club by Rosa Clara are leading the way with this trend. Always popular for a classic English wedding too is the more traditional dress and jacket combo, ever stylish, this look never dates. Condici, the famed English company is renowned for these timeless designs. We have a huge selection of innovative styles and classic pieces to suit every taste.
MUSIC FOR THE SOUL
Rose-Ann Raymond-Silvester at RRS Music Management and Events (https://rrsagency.uk) says: The birds are chirping, the daffodils are in bloom and the sun is starting to warm us once again – what a wonderful time of year for a wedding! The changing of the seasons and the new life it brings aligns perfectly with starting your new life together. What better way to complement your day than with some wonderful live entertainment?
Whether you choose to have a string quartet playing during your drinks reception in the grounds of a classy hotel venue, or a folksy acoustic guitarist bringing some chilled out vibes as you walk down the aisle among the trees or in a rustic barn; choosing the right entertainment to suit your style is the key to making your day as perfect as it can be. This is a time of year full of joy, light and warmth, and the right singer or instrumentalist can turn a special day into a truly magical one. Look for an entertainer to create a bright and uplifting atmosphere as you tie the knot and you won’t be disappointed.

LIGHT, FRESH AND DELICATE
Carrie Raymond from Caritas Cake Design (www.caritascakedesign.co.uk) says: After the long winter, a spring wedding offers the perfect excuse to raise the spirits with delightful flavours, playful designs and a pop of colour. Spring wedding cakes invite light fruity tastes such as lemon, passion fruit and raspberry. Adding elements of floral or earthy tones such as rose water, basil or lavender is becoming a popular choice and offers a fresh, delicate touch.
Think about being open to some variations to the traditional shape. Mixing up the tier heights, adding separators or changing up the shapes, all help to keep the style fresh, and are a great way to make your cake unique. Spring hails a more organic movement in the design of big-day bakes, with softer edges, flowing details and taller, architectural layouts. Incorporating a floral element with long stems and trailing foliage rather than tight groupings of flowers adds a playful touch.
Spring colours include gentle pastel palettes, natural white tones with plenty of fresh greens or bright cheerful hues. Using white rather than an ivory base to your cake makes the colours pop and adds a lighter air, perfect for the season.
PAINT AND PASTELS
If you’re hoping to extend your springtime theme to your hen do, Alice Munro-Hainsworth from The Paint Club (www.thepaintclub.co.uk) has the answer: Springtime offers the perfect opportunity to add fresh and vibrant colours during a sip and paint activity at your hen do. We’ll bring everything you need to paint a masterpiece in your holiday let, home, cocktail bar or local pub. Choose from seasonal favourites such as cherry blossom, rainbow tree, fluffy lambs or our pastel hare. Your bride tribe could even surprise you with a custom design and we’ll take care of the rest!
Our professional artist will guide you through the painting step by step, from blank canvas to work of art. With your favourite drink in one hand, be it a glass of wine or a cup of tea, and a paint brush in the other, you can get into the creative flow and have the perfect springtime hen party. We provide all of the materials for painting, all you need to do is choose your venue and your drink!
LET YOUR LOVE GROW
Mark Inscoe, Civil Celebrant Sussex
(https://civilcelebrantsussex.com) says: Spring is the perfect time of year for celebrating nature. It’s a time of renewal, a time of new growth. Young, fresh greens and spring flowers enhance those outdoor ceremony settings. For thousands of years, the seasons, especially spring, have been integral in ritual ceremonies reflecting our respect for nature. A perfect addition to your day might be a symbolic tree or shrub planting. Depending on the location of your ceremony, this could be done afterwards in your garden or elsewhere (with necessary permissions). During the ceremony, the sapling could be in a pot while you and others spoon soil onto it with a ceremonial trowel. As you’re doing this, significant words reflecting the symbolism of this action are spoken by your celebrant. Different trees have their own meaning. Apple is associated with knowledge, faith and fertility; birch represents truth and new beginnings; and elm is thought to strengthen relationships.
Remember, once you’ve done the legal bit in the registry office, you’re free to choose from so many spectacular natural settings to stage your celebrant-led wedding or civil partnership celebration ceremony.

Styling advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.
HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?
Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?
Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.
Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.
Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.
Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.
HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT
Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.
Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your
waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.
HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?
When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

Q&A Beauty
Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
WHEN, WHAT AND HOW?
I’m recently engaged and want to start thinking about my wedding make-up. What are some of the most frequently asked questions that brides come to you with?
Toni says: Speaking from personal experience, the most popular questions I encounter from newly-engaged couples are around timings and logistics of the wedding morning itself...
How many bridesmaids can you cater for on a wedding morning, and what time will you need to arrive? The biggest wedding party I’ve ever worked with is 11 – 10 bridesmaids and the bride! They were all having their hair and make-up done for a ceremony time of 2pm. It was a fun morning that had to be meticulously planned beforehand. I sought the help of two other hair and make-up artists, and we arrived at 8.30am. So, I’m able to cater for any size bridal party and will be in charge of the plans from choosing and booking the extra help to scheduling the morning, ensuring we run on time so that you stay calm and relaxed.
What beauty treatments should I have in the run up to my wedding? Eyebrow shape and tint are a must in my opinion. Brows are the frame for the face and tidy, well-groomed brows will level up a finished make-up look. So, even if it’s out of the ordinary for you, this is a non-negotiable step! Of course, there are a few other treatments I’d still recommend such as regular facials and adopting a good skincare regime to give you clear, glowing skin on the big day. A lash lift and tint is also ideal if you’re not opting for falsies on the day, as well as dermaplaning to remove all of those peach fuzz hairs on the face, creating an excellent make-up base.
Do I need to bring anything with me on the day? My bridal kit can cater for all skin types, tones and textures so I’m pretty well equipped. However, you’ll need a lipstick or lipgloss to touch up throughout the day. I’ll make a recommendation during your trial and if you love it I can order you one and bring it with me on the day. Equally, if you have a favourite lippy or fancy a spot of lipstick shopping where you find something you fall in love with, bring that with you. If you’re prone to shine, it may be worth investing in some blotting papers or powder too, or if your skin is a little on the dry side, a hydration spritz will freshen up your make-up when you need it.
MATTE VS. METALLIC
I tend to wear matte make-up products dayto-day, so I’m not sure whether to switch it up and use metallics for my wedding. Which is the best way to go with bridal make-up?
Alison says: 2023 brides are continuing to embrace natural make-up looks that emphasise the eyes and give a glowing, dewy and healthylooking complexion. When it comes to the eyes, both matte and metallics have their merits in bridal make-up but I’d avoid glitter.
Matte, textured eyeshadows are good for a simple, natural eye look. They have more pigment and blend well, helping to reshape and define. They’re best layered over a good base so that they don’t look patchy. They won’t settle in fine lines either, so work well on mature skin.
Metallic eyeshadows on the other hand shine out like metal or foil with an underlying gold or silver shimmer. Rose gold, copper or silver will look great if you like the current 90s vibe in hair and make-up. The shiny particles do settle in lines and creases though.
I do love to give my brides a bit of shimmer on the lids to make their eyes pop, as it reflects the light giving off a subtle shine. These products offer a beautiful sheer coverage and tend to flatter mature eyes too.
EXPERT Q&A 85
HERE COME THE CURLS
What hair look would you suggest for an English country garden style springtime wedding?
Shanon says: I’d suggest soft but defined curls that can be worn up or down. If you prefer to wear your hair down, a French braid half up half down looks beautiful and you’d be able to complement the style with fresh flowers woven into it that match your bouquet, which you can get from your florist.
If an up do is more your vibe, a loose bun with a natural fall down at the front along with twists and curls throughout is a real favourite. You may prefer this if you’re getting married during the summer rather than the spring, but you can also dress this with fresh flowers, which I think is a lovely touch for the setting.
BLURRING THE LINES
I’m noticing a few fine lines and wrinkles start to appear lately! How can I best conceal these on my wedding day without looking caked in make-up?
Becky says: A great tip when applying your products is to keep them all lightweight and gradually build up on layers rather than using too much in one go. I love starting with a primer such as the Laura Mercier Illuminating Primer all over the face to give a radiant, plump, soft look.
For any lines and wrinkles, creamy and thin concealers are great. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer is my go to. Apply a few dots where you want it and blend with your finger, the warmth of your skin will help it melt in, leaving you with a seamless finish. This is perfect around the eyes and any other area you may have found wrinkles appearing. If you’d like more coverage, apply a dot at a time keeping each layer thin and blended.
Avoid using foundation around the eye area as it can be quite heavy, just stick to your concealer. It’s a good idea to set with a little powder to help it stay in place, but don’t go too heavy as this can end up enhancing any lines. I love Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Pressed Powder as it’s so fine and doesn’t look cakey. Just use a small, fluffy brush to dust a little of this over your concealer.
If you feel make-up is settling into your lines all over, not just in certain areas, try using a tinted moisturiser or mixing some moisturiser with your foundation to keep it lightweight and hydrated for a soft focus look.
BE PREPARED
I have very long, fine hair. How can I add volume and texture for my wedding?
Charmaine says: Making sure hair is prepped correctly for styling will play a huge role in adding the right amount of volume and texture. There are so many styles available to you, so the type of preparation can vary; however, your bridal hair stylist will be able to tailor this in order to suit you.
Personally, I find a good base to start with is light crimping at the roots. Scary thought I know, but it gives you a natural root lift as well as additional thickness without seeing the crimping itself. This then means minimal backcombing, which in turn can create beautiful styles with a clean textured finish, rather than a frizzy end result.
Pairing the right products together with hair type can also make a huge difference. When used correctly, you can end up using quite a lot on the hair, although you’d never tell by looking at the results!
Of course, with some styles the only way to create your desired look will be with the additional help of extensions. Clip-ins are generally recommended, but your hair or bridal stylist will be able to make sure you have the correct ones to achieve the look you want.

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN
Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.
Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK
Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL
Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS
This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.
L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.
The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

TRIED & TESTED
Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:
“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.
This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20
SHINE BRIGHT
I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk
LUSCIOUS LASHES
LEGIT Lashes is Huda
Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com
eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

BAN THE BLOAT
Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day
Oneof the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding.
There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.
CHEW PROPERLY
Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30
times to allow the gut to digest with ease.
EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS
Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.
START WITH SOMETHING BITTER
Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.
AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS
It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.
LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS
If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.
SIGHT SEEING
While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.
With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.
We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?
No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.
