YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY

Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours.

Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place.

Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.

EVENTS ARENA

At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away.

Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn.

Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Walking on sunshine

Icannot believe that my dear friends Melissa and Dave have just celebrated their first anniversary! Where on earth did that year go? For those of you who are new to the magazine and, possibly happily for you, missed my endless and excited rambles about preparing to be a bridesmaid for fellow CWM editor Melissa, I hope you’ll indulge me as I reminisce!

Not wanting to start out on a negative note, but hands up: I hate the summer. It’s just too hot! Many a time I’ve contemplated taking a summer home in Iceland, but alas the budget doesn’t permit. But in 2022, my season horribilis was made all the merrier by the excitement of a wedding. Sage green and blush pink was the palette of choice, while the vibe was rustic. Still on trend this year, I would hazard to say that it’s a timeless theme. On 22nd July, we’d just about made it through the hottest days of the year, when thank goodness, the temperatures started to cool to a bearable level. An al fresco ceremony, a reception with the venues’ folding doors flung open, and some memorable moments for the newlyweds spent with their photographer in the nearby cornfields during golden hour: It was all a summer wedding should be, and more.

EDITORIAL

Deputy Managing Editor

Kelly Andrews | 01376 535 611 kelly.andrews@county.wedding

I’ll admit to liking one thing about the season though, and it came into play on Melissa and Dave’s big day, as indeed it would at any wonderful summer wedding. First and foremost, it’s the long days. Making the best of the great outdoors is something we can do to the max at this time of year. There are no more hours in the day, of course, but somehow it feels like there are, which is a huge plus when you’re celebrating such a momentous occasion. So, if you’re thinking about hosting your entire day outside, you won’t want to miss the advice of our experts over in Hot Topic from page 62. Or if you want to at least have the option to spill out of your venue and into some glorious surroundings, check out our waterside venues feature from page 25.

I hope you find inspiration aplenty among the pages of our summer issue. And, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

Beetlejuice is a huge childhood favourite of mine, so when I saw Zoe and Nick’s photos from their Tim Burton-themed nuptials, I immediately knew what they were referencing in this one. Love it!

PERFECTLY PLANNED

Real bride Jo says, “We went to different venues’ open days and to wedding fairs to meet suppliers, and carefully did our own research before booking the key elements three years in advance to make sure we got exactly what we wanted. We then wrote a list of everything else we needed to think about, and took it all in bite-sized chunks. Even in the last few weeks there was no stress or rush because everything had been carefully planned and taken care of.”

Set in the South Downs National Park on the outskirts of Worthing, this stunning Grade I listed Castle was described as “The most romantic Castle in the Land,” by the Great Romantic poet, Lord Byron.

The Castle has many magnificent areas that can be used to stage your fairy tale day, including the grand State Rooms and State Dining Room with the table formerly used at Buckingham Palace. The Castle’s famous horseshoe staircase, installed by Queen Victoria’s Equerry, is one of the most popular settings for wedding party photographs.

We offer two stunning locations to hold your Ceremony, the beautiful Ceremonial Hall with its double height ceiling, or on the South Lawns with the fabled GrecoRoman façade as your backdrop or alter. Combined with our award-winning catering, Castle Goring provides one of the most breathtaking wedding venues anywhere.

ONE LIFE AT A TIME

Sam Dickinson, a 25-year-old who has recently started working at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club in the kitchen, has a story to tell. He’d been living at Crawley Open House Hostel for the last three months after running out of accommodation options. An initiative set up by the hostel to help residents into work gave Sam the opportunity to participate in a cooking workshop at the Parsons Pig Pub in Crawley, where he impressed so much that he came to the attention of the team at Ashdown Park.

Executive chef, Tony Sanders, agreed to give Sam a trial and was immediately impressed, and soon after offered him a live-in commis chef job working alongside him. Sam has been working at the Hotel for four months now and absolutely loves it.

Tina Bricknell, sales and marketing manager at Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club says, “Sam has seamlessly integrated into the team here. We’re overjoyed by his progress and sincerely wish him the utmost success in his future endeavours. This is how you help to make a dent in homelessness, one life at a time.”

IN WITH THE NEW

Kane Harman of East Sussex-based Kandid Kane Photography, captures weddings all over the South East. His preferred style of photography is to shoot real, genuine moments of you and your loved ones celebrating your big day. Kane is passionate about taking a candid approach, getting natural shots while avoiding the need to take you away from your guests for too long. He’ll work with you and around your schedule to ensure any posed and formal group shots are as quick and efficient as possible helping your day to move along smoothly.

Kane says, “Being a wedding photographer is more than turning up with a camera. It’s noticing the little details you’ve gone to so much effort to create. It’s capturing the moments you’ll never forget but love to look at over and over again. It’s capturing those moments you missed. It’s anticipating guests’ embraces after too long apart. It’s noticing the way your loved one looks at you, as you see each other for the first time.”

RAISE YOUR GLASS

When Lucy Prout-Laing from Uniquely You Ceremonies started life as a celebrant she was surprised by how many people told her they hated speaking in public, and that although they loved the wedding, they were filled with dread when it came to making the speech. “As someone who, once upon a time, would melt into a bucket of nerves at the mere idea of standing up and speaking in front of people I was in a good position to help,” she says.

Lucy has recently added the offer of speech writing and coaching to Uniquely You Ceremonies, which also covers ceremonies and inclusive wedding planning. During a free consultation, Lucy will talk through the sticking points of speech writing and what happens when you speak in public. “Keeping services personal and individually focused remains at the heart of every aspect of my business,” she continues. Speech coaching sessions cover everything from writing the speech to the technical side of speech delivery and, importantly, how to deal with those pesky public speaking nerves.

To find out more or book a free consultation, head over to www.uniquelyyouceremonies.co.uk

Now, it’s even easier to find out what Kandid Kane can bring to your wedding day as he’s recently launched a swish new website featuring all of his latest package options including Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Other new offerings include albums, highlight videos and same-day sneak peek photos.

Jo and Jonah tied the knot at Gildredge Manor on 28th August, 2022

Jo and Jonah met in the workplace where their desks were near one another. “Jonah is six years younger than me, and I always used to say: ‘If only he were older!’” Jo says. “I guess after a while it just didn’t seem as important.” She asked him if he’d like to go for a walk on the beach with her and he agreed. Jonah says, “We didn’t really have anything in common, but always had so much to talk about. Although we had different interests, it was clear from the beginning that we both had similar morals and outlook on life.”

The couple headed to the Isle of Wight for a long weekend to celebrate their five-year anniversary, and were having drinks in the hotel gardens when Jonah produced an engagement ring. He didn’t even get a chance to pop the question, as Jo had said, “Yes,” straight away. “We both cried happy tears for ages,” she remembers.

It was important to the pair that their guests should feel comfortable and have fun on their big day, and they chose Gildredge Manor, which felt perfect. “It had lots of different spaces so people could dance if they wanted to, or chat at the bar,” Jo explains. “There was a room with a pool table and foosball table, as well as a lounge away from the noise of the party.” With the venue’s gorgeous Georgian elegance and light, airy nature, it was easy to see that this was the one. So, the date was set for 28th August, 2022...

Read on as the couple tell us more about their beautiful big day...

SETTING THE SCENE

For the ceremony, white chiffon sashes were tied around each chair, and standing at the altar was a big white blossom cherry tree, which the couple stood beneath as they said their vows. Their florist had also dotted vases of flowers here and here, and after the “I dos” the bridesmaids’ flowers and bridal bouquet were added to vases too. “The venue was gorgeous, so we didn’t feel we needed to add anything else,” Jo says.

Jo and Jonah picked a beautifully contrasting palette of dusky blue, burgundy and cream for their styling. Jonah’s suit was burgundy, while Jo’s dress was blush and the bridesmaids were dressed in blue, so the flowers would need to pull everything together. They briefed their florist that they didn’t want the florals to be too perfectly neat – no precise, round ball bouquets or centrepieces for them. Instead, Jo wanted to go for something big yet natural. They were also keen to include jasmine flowers as a way of incorporating their daughter, Jasmine.

Jonah wanted white cherry blossom trees, while Jo had her heart set on flower arrangements to match the bridal party for the centrepieces. “Everyone tells you marriage is about compromise,” Jo tells us. “So, we did half and half, and I think it worked really well!”

The couple were keen to gift their guests wedding favours, but they’d read that they should approach with caution as anything disposable often gets left behind. With that in mind, they decided instead to donate the money they’d set aside for favours to a few different charities close to their hearts (RSPCA, East Sussex Air Ambulance, and Cancer Research UK). They also bought pin badges from each charity, which came on little cards to inform them of the donation made in their name. “This way, guests could have the pin badge if they wanted, but if they got left behind, at least we knew the money hadn’t gone to waste,” Jo says.

The couple wrote everyone’s menu choice on little cards that matched the ones the pins were attached to, and tied the two

together with blue ribbon, before adding each person’s name to the front. Simple, but effective. The tables were seemingly numbered randomly, but they actually signified something for Jo and Jonah as a couple. For example, 16 was the day of their first date, and 14 was the number of pets they’ve had together.

The three-tier big day bake featured one layer of chocolate (Jasmine’s favourite), one of lemon (Jonah’s favourite), and one of coffee (Jo’s favourite). It was decorated with white fondant icing and Willow Tree figurines to represent their little family, including their four cats. Finally, the florist provided some flowers to complete the showstopper.

LOOKING THE PART

Jo had been dreaming of a big princess ballgown since she was six years old, so she knew exactly what she was looking for, and found Wesley by Maggie Sottero in blush. The bodice was covered in hundreds of pearls and Swarovski crystals and it was only the fourth dress the bride tried on. “I never doubted my choice,” she remembers. “When you know, you know.”

Jonah had his suit custom made. “So much is centred around the bride’s dress, but he deserved to feel amazing too,” Jo says. The pair visited a specialist tailor and the groom was able to choose every aspect of this suit, from the style and fabric right down to the angle of the pockets and colour of the stitching. “There were 84 options for the lining alone!” Jo remembers. He also had “You and Me” embroidered underneath the collar as this is something the two have always said to each other.

The groomsmen were dressed in blue suits with burgundy ties that matched Jonah’s suit. Meanwhile, the bride tribe all wore dresses of their own choosing. “I wanted my bridesmaids to look and feel beautiful,” Jo says. “ I knew I wouldn’t be able to find something that everyone loved and felt totally comfortable in, so I asked them all to pick their own. I just asked that they be floor-length and any shade of blue. In the end, I think they did a better job than I ever could have!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Weddings are long days, so Jo and Jonah were keen that their loved ones should have plenty to keep them occupied. A singer and pianist played as guests arrived, which set the scene beautifully. Then, during the canapés and photos a singer/ guitarist entertained all assembled. The newlyweds knew him to be a hit as two other couples asked for his details for their own weddings!

Five white space hoppers and two giant Jengas were laid out on the lawn for everyone to enjoy throughout the day, and the venue’s games room proved popular with those who didn’t want to dance.

In the evening, a live band filled the dancefloor, but when feet tired, there was plenty else to do. A candy cart, photo booth and close-up magician were also on hand. “The reams of pictures we got back from the photo booth told us it was a hit, and plenty of people told us afterwards how much they enjoyed the magic. It was great to see their amazement captured on camera when we got our pictures back.”

“I could go on about our suppliers forever. We chose carefully and they really did make the day perfect. We can’t decide who we’re most grateful to!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“Jonah was very emotional in the morning,” Jo remembers. “I have so many photos of him crying!” The bride though was the opposite, the picture of clam and serenity. “I kept waiting for the nerves to kick in but they never did,” she says. Even waiting to walk down the aisle was a moment of complete clarity for Jo. “I remember thinking how right and normal it felt,” she shares.

Indeed, the ceremony was the most memorable part of the day for Jonah. “I was really emotional seeing Jo walk down the aisle and seeing her dress. It’s a bit of a blur but I remember sitting down while someone was reading and holding her hand. It was like it was just her and me, and that was good,” he recalls.

The couple’s daughter took her role as chief bridesmaid very seriously. During the morning, she had a detailed timetable of who should be where and when, and we’re told was very strict! She made sure everyone had their readings and that the best man had the rings. In fact, she made sure everyone kept to schedule and as a result the ceremony started right on time.

Zoe and Nick celebrated their wedding day with a super-cool and edgy Tim Burton theme

Images courtesy of Chris Giles Photography

Zoe and Nick met via MSN Messenger when they both received a silly chainletter email from a mutual friend. Nick’s address got added to Zoe’s MSN account and from there, the two became best friends and discovered that they worked in the same department store.

Zoe proposed to Nick on 29th April, when she got up early, gave Nick a card and got down on one knee. Happily, Nick said, “Yes,” before Zoe disappeared on a weekend away with a friend!

The couple found themselves attracted to Southend Barns when they came across it while searching for a wedding venue. “It was beautiful, and had a timeless feel with benches along the barn’s long aisle,” Zoe says. “The toilets were also a big thing as I knew I wanted a big dress!” So, that settled, the date was booked for 4th November, 2022.

Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 37

Nick wore traditional tails, with a pale blue tie, while his groomsmen wore the same accessorised with black ties.

We both felt great on the day, apart from my awful cold. There were no nerves though and even our photographer and make-up artist commented that it was the most relaxed wedding morning they’d been part of!

Black dresses are hard to come by but I knew from my 30th birthday party that I wanted Velvet Birdcage to make it. I designed an empireline, black Mikado satin gown with a cathedral-length train. It featured plenty of tulle and a removable black cape attached at the shoulders.

Our table plan was handmade using a Jack Skellington wreath with ribbons and name cards hanging from it. Tables were named after Tim Burton movies including Beetljuice, Batman, Alice in Wonderland, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd, and Edward Scissorhands.

When I walked down the aisle I swept up all the little pumpkins and petals with my dress as I went! My bridesmaids were dressed in dusky blue floor-length tulle dresses with sequins adorning the bodices.
“Just keep calm. Nothing matters but you and your partner.” – Zoe

As our wedding favours we had lemon-flavoured shortbread biscuits with white icing and a black Z & N for decoration.

Nick made a ‘Til Death light for the occasion, while further decorative highlights included a moon gate with curtain and flowers, and various Jack and Sally pumpkin lights placed along the aisle, around the venue and on the dancefloor.

The centrepieces were black trees with perspex discs holding images from Tim Burton films and VHS tapes with a film still on the front and purple LEDs inside.

Unfortunately, I’m highly allergic to flowers, so we used faux blooms. Myself and my bridesmaids had bouquets made by Maddison Rocks

Instead of a traditional wedding cake we opted for vegan doughnuts.

We laid out a game of hammerschlagen to keep guests occupied while we did the boring photo bit.

All of our catering was provided by Roots Catering. It was all unbelievably yummy, and everyone still talks about the food to this day! We had pie and mash, which used to be one of our date-night favourites when we’d head to the local pub.

REAL WEDDINGS 39

We had a live band, Husk, supplied by Entertainment Nation, as well as a photo booth, both of which were a huge hit.

The smoke bomb made for some epic photos, but they went terribly wrong! The whole wedding party was in fits of laughter, as they choked on smoke trying to get away from it all.

The staff working on the day were amazing, and really helped to organise everything and keep it all to time. Everyone made the day extra special, we couldn’t fault anything.

We travelled to Northern Ireland for a mini-moon break where we met up with some friends. We went for a week and had an incredible time exploring. We plan to go on a big honeymoon in 2024.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Rachael and Mathew opted for a fun, relaxed, garden party vibe for their big day, and made sure their children were involved every step of the way

Images courtesy of Chrissie Brooks Photography

Rachael and Mathew met as many couples do in today’s world, online. Rachael had two very young children, so she was struggling to find opportunities to go out and meet new people, and her friends convinced her to give online dating a try. “I was really against it at first but thought I’d give it a go as a bit of a laugh,” she says. “Within a week, Mathew had messaged me and it went from there!” They met up six months later at a local pub for a drink. The idea was to stay for one drink, but they ended up chatting all afternoon and didn’t leave until closing!

Mathew popped the question on Rachael’s birthday, as she sat on the bed with the children opening her presents. She knew he’d bought her a Garmin running watch, so when she opened the box that’s what she expected to find. Instead, she lifted the lid to find an engagement ring. Rachael remembers, “I was so shocked, I started crying, then Mathew started crying, which made my youngest cry as she thought we were sad! I had to explain to her that they were happy tears!”

Slaugham Place was only the second venue the couple viewed, but as soon as they saw it they knew that was it. “We were looking for something that wasn’t too formal, which would give us the space and something a bit different,” Rachael explains. They knew there’d be a lot of children joining them on their big day, 43 in fact, so they wanted somewhere with plenty of room for them run around and play in safety, while the adults could have some down time. “We met Carolina at the venue and she was so accommodating. We just fell in love with it and didn’t look at any others. Within the week, we’d booked it for 17th June, 2023.” Read on as the bride tells us more about that oh-so special day...

REAL WEDDINGS 43

Our four children made our day extra special. Our three girls walked ahead of me, while my son Oscar walked me down the aisle with my dad. For us, including them in the wedding was the most important aspect as we were bringing our families together. It wasn’t just about Mathew and I but about the six of us.

Carolina, the owner of Slaugham Place organised the flowers for us. She created all of the bouquets, buttonholes, table flowers and thank you bouquets.

Mat and his groomsmen all wore the same sage green tweed three-piece suits.
44
I wore a Stella York gown, style 7531 in Ivory, which I purchased from Fross Wedding Collections.

Alice Flower sang for us throughout the day including during the ceremony as I walked down the aisle, as we signed the register, and as we exited. She then performed all afternoon until we went inside for our wedding breakfast. She was absolutely sensational and everyone commented on how beautiful the music was. It gave a lovely atmosphere to the afternoon.

Our centrepieces were flower arrangements put together by our venue in tall vases, including a beautiful mix of white peonies, roses and daisies with eucalyptus.

We created our own table plan using a second-hand mirror, which I wrote on.

Instead of favours I made children’s activity boxes, which included games and colouring packs. We thought that as long as the kids were happy, their parents would be happy!

One of our friends offered to make our wedding cake as a gift, as she used to be a pastry chef. It was a three-tier vanilla sponge with fresh cream, jam and fresh fruit. It was delicious!

REAL WEDDINGS 45
My bridesmaids wore the Keeva Maxi Bridesmaid dress from Silk Fred in nude.

Mid Sussex Hog Roast catered our wedding breakfast, providing amazing food and fantastic service. They even staffed the bar. They honestly couldn’t have done enough for us.

I asked an old friend of mine, Darren Kane, to DJ during the evening.

When planning, share the workload with your partner. Research, pre-plan and when the day comes, just enjoy.

We just sat on one of the benches for 10 minutes or so and watched everyone laughing and drinking. The kids were running around, playing. It was all we’d asked for and more.

Love’s youngDREAM

Pampas grass is still having a moment thanks to its versatility. Here, it’s showcased alongside pops of opulent burgundy and rust

Images courtesy of Alessandro Piolanti

Pampas grass is still living its best life at weddings, remaining a firm favourite among venue stylists and couples this year, and beyond we hope.

It’s light, fluffy, voluminous nature makes it the perfect go-to for quickly, easily and effectively filling a space, while simultaneously bringing the drama and soft romanticism. Traditionally, we’ve seen it most at home in rustic, boho and outdoor weddings, but it also works like a dream with the latest on-trend colour palette – rust.

Here, our beloved pampas grass takes centre stage, making a huge statement in the shape of a ceremony moongate, which is complemented by extra touches in the bride’s bouquet, groom’s buttonhole, centrepieces, and don’t get us started on the jaw-dropping tunnel of arches created for the wedding breakfast table. This team of local wedding aficionados has certainly beautifully demonstrated how it’s done!

perfect PICTURE

Fear of the unknown can become overwhelming when planning a wedding. After all, it’s not something you do every day! So, we’ve decided to remove that for you when it comes to one of the most important elements of your day – the photography. Here, some of the region’s finest wedding photographers, tell us what to expect from the moment you set out on your planning journey to the time you spend putting your album together.

BEFORE THE BIG DAY FINDING THE ONE

“Finding the right photographer can be a daunting task,” says Toni Heath at Worthing-based Cuttlebone Photography. “Don’t rush into it. Take your time to research, read reviews, and ask for recommendations. It’s essential to find a photographer with a style to match your taste.” Gem Harris from Gem Harris Photography also recommends thorough research. “Magazines and wedding fairs are great places to find photographers, as well as word of mouth,” she says.

So, you hit the internet ready to research, but what are you looking for?

“Chemistry matters,” says Nick Barham from Rhythm and Romance Wedding Photography. “When you meet potential photographers, it’s important to ensure you click

(pun intended) on a personal level. You want someone who gets your vibe and can effortlessly blend into your wedding day shenanigans.

“Also, prepare to be dazzled by portfolios,” Nick continues. “Look for a photographer whose style makes your heart skip a beat. Find someone who makes you say: ‘Holy moly, I need them at my wedding!’”

STYLE IT OUT

Speaking of style, every photographer is likely to offer a little something unique to them, but in broad strokes there are some elements to look out for. Here, Nick sums up the big three: “If timeless elegance and picture-perfect poses float your boat, then classic photography is your jam. Think poised and polished, with every hair in place. If you’re a

fan of spontaneous moments and capturing genuine emotions on the other hand, candid photography is your go-to. These sneaky ninjas of photography will stealthily capture the laughter, tears and dancefloor fun without you even noticing. Finally, are you up for pushing the boundaries of creativity? If so, look out for photographers who can turn your wedding into an avant-garde masterpiece. Expect mind-bending compositions, experimental lighting, and awe-inspiring magical imagery.”

Kelsie Scully of Brighton-based Kelsie Scully Photography says, “Weddings are inherently documentary in style, where the photographer captures the day as it happens, but some then mix in a hybrid of other styles as and when appropriate, which is what I do. I transition between different styles depending on the wants and needs of my couples.”

JUST THE TWO OF US

“Engagement shoots are a great way to get to know your photographer before the big day,” Gem tells us. “This experience enables you to feel more relaxed and comfortable in front of the lens. Practice makes perfect!”

So true, and believe us, feeling chilled in front of your photographer makes the world of difference to the final images. Kelsie says, “Lots of people hate the idea of having their picture taken, but the massive difference I notice between the weddings of couples who’ve had an engagement shoot with me and those who haven’t is that they’re instantly comfortable around me. This is also true of their guests who’ve seen all these lovely photographs of the couple and that instant trust is invaluable for capturing great images on the day. If you’re on the fence about having an engagement shoot, there are a million reasons to go for it. I can’t recommend them enough.”

immortalised – exchanging vows, cutting the cake, Uncle Bob’s legendary dance moves... List them to ensure nothing’s missed in the wedding whirlwind. Don’t forget to leave room for spontaneity and candid captures though. Also, share the unique details that make your day special with your photographer. Perhaps you have a handmade wedding arch or your grandmother’s heirloom locket. They’ll love capturing these personal touches.

“Remember, the key to a successful wedding photography experience is a healthy balance of direction and creative freedom. Provide your photographer with the necessary guidance through a shot list, but also trust their expertise to capture the authentic emotions and unforgettable moments that will make your wedding album come to life.”

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

IN THE PICTURE

While any photographer worth their salt will be more than adept at capturing your big day to perfection, they’re not mind readers. So, providing them with a short list of must-have subjects is advisable. Toni says, “If you have specific shots or poses you want captured, be sure to supply your photographer with a shot list. I always suggest keeping the group shots to a maximum of eight as guests scatter like cats and it’s quite a task trying to round everyone up and not ideal if there are time restraints.” Making a list beforehand and discussing with your photographer in advance will also ensure you don’t forget any of your all-important nearest and dearest. “It’s important you both know exactly what images will be captured by the end of the day. If there’s a special great aunt you’d love to have a pic with, don’t forget to add her to the list,” Gem says.

Remember, it’s not just about people it’s about moments. Nick says, “A shot list is like a wedding photographer’s secret treasure map. It helps us capture all the essential moments and the best way to ensure we’re not left scratching our head. Think of the key moments you absolutely want

In preparation for the big day, you’ll need to discuss with your photographer detailed timings of how your day will unfold, so that your whole W-day team of suppliers can work together to make everything run like clockwork. After all, no one wants to be late for the “I dos” or wedding breakfast!

“Getting the timings spot on is crucial to ensure everything runs smoothly and all the necessary shots are captured,” Toni explains. “It helps to plan the

day image wise, such as when to capture group shots, and scheduling in a quiet moment away from everyone in golden hour.” Gem agrees and advises, “Make sure your photographer has a schedule of timings factoring in your group and couple shots.”

ON THE BIG DAY SEEING DOUBLE

Some photographers will offer you the opportunity of booking a second shooter, and now you’ve arrived at the big day, you’ll see just how invaluable they can be. For example, a second photographer enables you to have certain aspects of the day shot from different angles at the same time. Plus, this means your photographer can literally be in two places at once. One can be documenting your morning preparations, while the second shooter can head into the reception room to get pics of the details, before heading over to document how your other half is getting on. They’ll never miss a moment of those precious memories unfolding.

Toni says, “I can include a second shooter if certain shots are needed that can’t be covered by me alone. For example, getting ready shots of

both partners at different locations.” But there’s no need to worry if your budget won’t stretch to a second. “It’s a luxury, but not essential,” Gem says.

SAY CHEESE

Believe it or not the postceremony drinks reception can be a make or break situation depending on what you’ve decided to do with your group shots. The key is balance. Gem explains, “I think it’s really important to have some group or staged shots, but that doesn’t mean they have to be too formal or boring. But for the rest of the day I love to see relaxed, reportage photography.”

Try to keep the posed group formals to the absolute essentials only. Trust in the talents of your photographer to capture your loved ones in a natural candid way throughout the day, and allow all assembled to get on with the business at hand – celebrating your big day!

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

Ah, the great British weather! Ever the challenge, but it doesn’t need to negatively impact your big day if you roll with it. “The weather can be unpredictable, but don’t let it ruin your day,” Toni says. “Trust your photographer to find creative ways to work around it. Some of my favourite shots have been taken when it’s started raining and we have to think on our feet. Storm clouds make a great backdrop.” What’s more a

PHOTOGRAPHY 55

little preparation goes a long way as Gem says, “Be ready whatever the weather and always make sure someone has a beautiful umbrella to hand!”

AFTER THE BIG DAY

When the last of the confetti has been swept away and you’re headed off on honeymoon, your photographer will set to work on your images. You’ll find that each professional will work slightly differently, so your expectations should be based on exactly what you’ve discussed with them at time of booking. Here, our experts tell us how they prefer to work to give you an idea of the range available.

KELSIE SCULLY PHOTOGRAPHY

Kelsie says, “Every photographer will have different delivery schedules, which is dependent on so many factors from their editing style, conditions on the day, to their workload. Most deliver between four and 12 weeks, with many providing some sort of preview prior to that. This information should be in your contract with a rough delivery time provided shortly after your wedding. But whatever you do, don’t rush your photographer by asking for regular updates when they’re within the agreed time frame. These images will last a lifetime and are worth the wait.

“The safest place to protect your photographs is print. Image files degrade in quality over time, become corrupt and are easily lost on old laptops or when technology advances. You can rip a photograph in half and it can be restored, but a corrupt image file is usually gone forever. So, store your images on your computer or a cloud solution like Amazon’s free photo storage, but be sure to get some prints to treasure.

“Photographs print darker than what you’ll see on your device. I usually recommend turning down a screen to at least half brightness, even lower on a phone, to get a feel for what the images will look like before you print. If your photographer offers a printing service, I recommend going through them as they should ensure each meets their standards before sending to you.”

CUTTLEBONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Toni says, “The time it takes to deliver photos should be discussed way before your wedding day. As a guide, I give between four to six weeks for gallery delivery, but every photographer has a different timeline, so make sure you double check.

“Choosing the best images can be overwhelming, but your photographer will guide you through the process. There are a variety of options available for displaying your images, from prints to canvas and photo books. Be sure to choose the package that best suits your needs and budget and consider who else will want copies of the images.

“Finally, don’t forget to discuss copyright with your photographer. Ensure you have the rights to reproduce and share the images as you wish. Importantly, ensure you work with a photographer you can trust to deliver the perfect results.”

GEM HARRIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Gem says, “Make sure you have a clear idea of when to expect your photographs. I try to give my couples a sneak peak a few days later and supply the full shoot on a memory stick two weeks later. I supply in black and white and colour, which gives couples the opportunity to arrange their own prices and books from whoever they like.”

MAKE A STATEMENT

“Trends-wise, we’re seeing a huge surge in bookings for more extravagant statement cakes,” says Ashleigh Nicholson from Cakes by Ashleigh. “Whether that’s a super-tall beauty with floating tiers to add extra height using spacers, or something smaller with a display piece such as a hoop or an arch adorned with matching flowers. Much more focus is being placed on the styling to make the impact by tying the décor to the cake table.”

Emily Fitter from Emily’s Mixing Bowl says, “I’m offering a lot more styling options for my cakes this year, including a larger range of cake stands to buy or hire as well as signage. I'm also encouraging couples to repurpose their flowers, such as those from the ceremony, to go around the cake table later and make an incredible display of the setup. Styling

your cake table can make a great big-day bake look incredible and be a huge part of the décor or the reception room.”

TEXTURED TIERS

“A popular wedding cake style currently emerging is textured icing, such as hand-painted prints, patterns and more colour,” says Holly Fairall at Holly Ann Cake Design. “Clients are taking inspiration from the finer details of their wedding to better connect each element through décor.”

Textured icing effects include hand-painted botanical brush embroidery, such as the gold-highlighted technique used by Holly on the fondant icing tiers pictured over the page. She explains, “This design matched the bride’s dress with the effect complementing the lace on the gown.”

Alice Marples from Marples Cakery is experiencing something similar: “I’m finding that a diagonal buttercream effect is becoming more sought after, as well as cascading floral displays on cakes,” she says.

FLORAL FUN

Emily tells us, “Semi-naked cakes seem to be on the decline after a strong presence for the last eight years or so. Taking their place are edible pressed flower designs or fully-iced, textured buttercream bakes decorated either with fresh flowers or palette knife painted abstract florals and colour.”

Ashleigh has experienced the same trend shift and says, “Pressed edible flower cakes are taking over from the semi-naked bakes for those couples choosing barn venues. These bring the outdoors in and match the rustic vibe perfectly.”

Emily continues, “For less rustic, more polished weddings, fondant iced cakes are sticking around and being styled with more loose-looking arrangements of fresh flowers and props such as flower crowns.”

TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

“Couples are becoming more interested in different and unusual flavours,”

Annie Bennett from Leading Lake Cakes shares. “Rose is popular at the moment. I offer a blush pink, rose-flavoured sponge with fluffy buttercream also containing a floral hint. It looks fabulous and smells divine!”

Annie continues, “Fruit cakes also seem to be making a comeback. I’ve had quite a few bookings for those this year.”

Having safely been released from the various lockdowns of recent years, Leading Lady Cakes is now offering a full consultation service, at a venue of your choice (ideally your wedding venue), allowing couples to sample a selection of her mouthwatering cake flavours. Annie says, “This includes our newly-designed taster box, featuring up to six flavours. This follows an initial online consultation to decide on the basics, which is a fabulous way of getting the design details ironed out.”

On the flavour front, Alice is finding that her raspberry and white chocolate cake is most in demand – “The sweetness of the white chocolate complements the sharpness of the raspberries and makes the perfect sponge,” she explains.

IT’S ALL WHITE

“Classic yet simple styles are frequently being requested. Elegant white, with single roses and perhaps lace detail on the icing,” Annie tells us.

While Ashleigh says, “Pearls and whites are currently on trend. Think all-white cakes with loads of shimmery sugar pearls, which are our most requested style at the moment, decorated to match the also on trend pearl-covered veils and headbands. These tie in nicely with a venue filled with fresh white flowers and greenery.”

TREAT TIME

Cakes by Ashleigh’s newest product this year is the dessert table. “These have gone down a storm,” Ashleigh says. “They’ve simplified the booking process too as they come set from our menu as a package. All a couple need to do is tell us their colours and style and we do the rest. They include a two- or three-tier cake with matching items such as macarons, cupcakes and other delicious treats, all displayed on matching cake stands, plates and in trinket boxes.

Holly Ann Cake Design has also launched a new dessert table menu for 2023, which you can check out at www.hollyanncakedesign.co.uk/ dessert-tables.

Meanwhile, the latest sweet treat offering from Marples Cakery is deluxe chocolate dipped sprinkle strawberries. “These are popular for wedding champagne receptions,” Alice says. “Champagne and indulgent chocolate dipped strawberries make the most divine combination!” She too is finding that grazing treat tables are much requested, and says, “Couples are opting for a more al fresco type of dessert experience.”

HOT TOPIC: THE GREAT OUTDOORS

This issue, we asked the region’s experts for their advice on planning an outdoor wedding

CHIN CHIN!

William Coren, CEO and founder of House Coren (www.housecoren.co.uk) says: Planning drinks for your outdoor wedding reception is crucial for creating an unforgettable experience. Think about these key considerations...

•Guest preferences and dietary restrictions. Offer a diverse range of options, including sparkling wine, non-alcoholic alternatives, and cocktails to accommodate everyone.

•Weather conditions. Adapt your drink selection based on the weather. Serve refreshing drinks like spritzers and fruity cocktails on hot summer days, and warm beverages like mulled wine for cooler weather.

•Time and duration of the reception. Provide a variety of drinks to keep guests hydrated and refreshed throughout the event. Include non-alcoholic options alongside sparkling wine for responsible consumption.

•Signature cocktails and personalisation Collaborate with your mixologist or wine stockist to create signature cocktails that reflect your style as a couple, offering an exclusive and memorable experience.

•Beverage service and presentation. Ensure you have suitable glassware, ice, garnishes and professional staff to manage the bar effectively. Use outdoorfriendly drinkware for safety and consider visually appealing drink stations.

•Toasting and celebratory moments. Ensure an ample supply of sparkling wine for toasting moments and provide elegant glassware for a photogenic touch.

House Coren is honoured to offer packages for outdoor receptions and would love to be part of your special day, providing exceptional sparkling wine made in England. Cheers to a wonderful wedding reception!

CREATURE COMFORTS

Your Sussex Wedding editor, Kelly Andrews, says: When you’re tying the knot al fresco, make sure everyone’s adequately informed in good time. When you send out your invitations be clear on which parts of your day will be celebrated outside, or indeed all of it, so that guests know to make their own arrangements in terms of attire and protection. Keep an open line of communication with your suppliers too, and collaborate with them on wetweather backup plans. For example, at which point will you be prepared to make the decision to take it all inside? Who is going to be responsible for moving the whole shebang?

Check on the access to your venue. If you’re tying the knot in a field, are there accessible roads and paths? If not, have a think about how you can overcome these challenges for your guests. Perhaps you need to lay on extra transport.

Sound has a tendency to drift away in the open air, so make sure you have all the tech in place to ensure everyone can hear you as you say “I do.” You’ll also need to check with the venue whether there are any restrictions on latenight music, as you don’t want to be disturbing the local wildlife or residents! Also on the tech front, do you have all of the creature comforts in place such as loos and generators?

Have a think about what cover you want to provide for you and your guests. This is, of course, crucial for the comfort of all, not only in terms of wet weather protection, but also from the sun – we’ve had some scorchers in recent years. Once you’ve settled on a vibe for your nuptials, this should all become clear. An elegant, lined marquee is ideal for a classic wedding, whereas a tipi is the prefect choice for a boho or rustic vibe.

Finally, why not make a weekend of it and invite your guests to camp? Better still if you’ve chosen an al fresco venue with on-site bell tent glamping facilities!

SUMMER SCORCHERS

CEO and co-founder of The Gilchrist Collection, owners of The Ravenswood (https://theravenswood.co.uk), Samantha Gilchrist says: With the summer wedding season in full swing and the English weather as unpredictable as ever, you may get more than you bargained for when it comes to wishing for a sunny day for your al fresco nuptials.

Don’t compromise your photographic backdrop for finding shade. Your wedding venue is the backdrop to your day and it’s important that it’s not lost in your photography when avoiding squinting eyes. Work with your venue and photographer in advance to discuss where you’ll take your couple shots and allow for early evening photographs in the iconic areas of your venue that might be too bright for the day. Ensure you have someone on hand to bring you water and canapés during your photo session and to top you up with suntan lotion, which can often get forgotten. Nobody wants a sunstroke headache on their wedding day!

As you’d make the decision to move your ceremony indoors if it rains, don’t feel pressured to stay outside if the sun becomes too hot. Consider your dress or suit and whether you’ll be too hot to enjoy the moment. If you’re intent on staying outside, maybe ditch the suit jackets and instead opt for braces or waistcoats that buttonholes can be pinned to. Think too about your guests. Will some be older and struggle with the temperatures? Work with your venue to understand if the area you’ve chosen is shaded or exposed to the sun. Otherwise, make the most of your venue’s inside space and move things to shelter so you can keep your cool at the altar.

If you’re worried about guests struggling with the heat while enjoying your venue’s grounds, incorporating some cooling wedding favours can help them deal with the soaring temperatures. My favourites include paper fans, sun cream, flavoured water dispensers, cooling mist stations, or even offer ice cream or ice lollies.

Don’t for get to take time out to refresh. Whether it’s packing a few extra shirts, arming your chief bridesmaid with powder for keeping the shine away or popping some refreshing towels and sprays into the venue’s toilets, all this can encourage that moment to refresh allowing your guests to feel their best.

The international best-selling Orient Bambino Watch Series now includes a long-awaited 38mm diameter case perfect for grooms-to-be.

The Classic and Simple Style Series, known as Orient Bambino by dedicated fans, features traditional design features such as a convex dial and domed glass. The series has been a consistent best-seller over the last decade in 70 countries around the world. Until now, they featured mostly 40.5-mm case diameters, however, these latest models feature a more compact 38-mm case.

The beautiful finish can be admired through the see-through back, and the domed glass and convex dial create a vintage feel. The dial is available in beige as well as black and white, which complements the simple design perfectly.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

TIME IS YOUR FRIEND

I’ve recently learned that my skin is not just dry but dehydrated! How can I combat the dry, rough patches so that my foundation looks flawless in time for W-day?

Kate Mitchell from Kate Mitchell Makeup Studio and Academy (https://katemitchellmakeupstudio.co.uk) says: The most important thing to remember about skincare before your wedding is time. How long do you have before your big day to start mixing up your usual skin care regime? As we all know, the skin is a temperamental and sensitive organ, which after introducing new skin care can often go through many questionable stages before showing off the flawless, finished results. It’s highly recommended that any changes to your skincare routine, including any professional facial treatments are started within six months of your wedding day. This allows for your skin to have time to fully adjust to the changes, with opportunity to make a few tweaks along the way to get it looking and feeling perfect.

If time is on your side, I’d always recommend starting a course of professional facials. There are hundreds on the market, so it’s important to seek advice from a fully-trained professional who’ll be best equipped to adapt treatments around your needs and achieve the results you’re hoping for. The Hydrafacial is an amazing treatment for anyone struggling with combination skin.

If you don’t have six months to experiment though, light exfoliations and hydrating face masks are going to be your best friends. Exfoliating toners with very little acid content are a great way to gently reset your complexion, enhancing your natural glow and evening out texture. Moisturising tissue face masks are then ideal for keeping your skin hydrated and plump, plus they’re incredibly relaxing. For home use, I recommend Pixi Glow Tonic Toner and Garnier Moisture Bomb Face Masks.

I’d always suggest seeking advice from a skin specialist before introducing anything acid-based to your routine. This will reduce the risk of using any contradicting products or medications, which may cause irritation.

BARELY THERE

I’m loving the fresh-faced no make-up make-up look, and would love to go with something similar on my wedding day. What do you recommend?

Claire Reed from The Beauty Ninjas (www.thebeautyninjas.co.uk) says: For a fresh-faced no make-up look, ditch regular foundation and opt for one of the new breed of CC creams. These have enough coverage to use in place of foundation, but wear more like a tinted moisturiser. This results in a your-skin-but-better finish. They’re therefore a great choice for more mature skins and brides wanting a minimal look. My absolute favourite is IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream, which also contains SFP50 – a must for sunny wedding days. This should be set with powder to lock it in place all day. Forget fussy eye shading, instead add a light shimmer to eyelids, such as Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in shade Champagne and finish off with mascara. Add a touch of cream highlighter to the tops of cheekbones and sculpt underneath with a cool-toned bronzer. Finish the look with a pop of pink blusher and a nude pink lipstick. I currently love the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner in shade Pillow Talk, used all over the lips with a slick of clear lip gloss.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

82
© James Rudland

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

HONEYMOON NEWS 85

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,

Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!

There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com

HONEYMOON REVIEW 87

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.
