Cheylesmore Manor House, Coventry
Coventry is an historic city with a rich and diverse history, situated in the heart of the country. It is known for its medieval Coventry Cathedral which was left in ruins after WWII bombing and home to an unfortified Manor House, previously the only unfortified royal palace outside of London, Cheylesmore Manor is now used as a stunning ceremony venue.
The remnants of a medieval royal palace, the gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor, is at the heart of the city on New Union Street. The magnificent timber building is a key piece of Coventry’s rich and important heritage.
The manor is believed to have been built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237. By 1320 it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her grandson Edward, the Black Prince, took possession of it after her.
The building we know today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings to the original manor house.
The Manor House houses three beautiful ceremony rooms: The Queen Isabella Room, The Black Prince Room and the Library Room.
With bespoke ceremony co-ordinators on hand to guide you through every step of the way, helpful Register Office teams and even easy to manage personalised stationery packages, Coventry can’t wait to welcome you for your ceremony, from weddings to naming days, commitment celebrations and civil partnerships - we can host it all.

Classically ELEGANT
Louisa and Sam chose a black and white colour palette for their big-day at Stockton House

and Sam met in their college’s library.
“I was obsessed from the moment I saw him, and he loved my curly, ginger hair,” says Louisa. “Our relationship blossomed, and on our seventh anniversary, Sam proposed at The Roseate Villa in Bath. It was the first city we visited as a couple, and the proposal was the most beautiful surprise. Sam used a photo book of all our memories over the seven years we had spent together to ask the question. It was so personal, and the photo album is something we often get out to look back at our wonderful memories together.”
The happy couple booked Stockton House for their big day. “We visited when it was a shell and in the first stages of renovation,” shares the bride. “We had to wear highvisibility clothing and hard hats, so not the usual wedding venue viewing! The incredible vision of the team and the location of the venue are what really attracted us. The key feature was the fact we got to have the house the day before and after, so we could enjoy the incredible grounds along with our family for the whole weekend, which felt like a mini holiday. The ability to come and go on the Friday and have our suppliers set up made the wedding far less stressful and meant that the excitement could start right from our arrival at Stockton House. Once the house was finished and we visited for the first time for our wedding breakfast menu tasting, we got to see the beautifully furnished bedrooms and how they had restored the house to its former glory with the perfect balance of new and old. Amy, Tom and Ellie were incredible hosts, and the attention to detail assured us that we had made the right decision.”
Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
REAL WEDDINGS 27
We filled the house and dining room with candles to create an amazing ambience. We had a balloon arch as a photo booth backdrop and photographs of our grandparents and parents on their wedding days.
We chose tall and short flower arrangements for our centrepieces with ivory and blush roses, gypsophila, eucalyptus, and other greenery to fill the room with an amazing scent. We also incorporated as many candles as possible to create a lovely atmosphere.
On our tables, we had gold-edged charger plates, black napkins and personalised menu settings styled by White Fern Weddings.
For our favours, we chose Biscoff brownies sealed with black and white stickers.
We had flowers everywhere, which made the venue even more magical and brought all the features of the house to life. The milk churn arrangements that were used at the entrance of the church and then brought to the venue afterward were a particular favourite!
My mum made the cake, which was decorated with flowers.
28
Stockton House provided our catering. We enjoyed six incredible canapés, a wonderful three-course wedding breakfast and evening food to finish off the day! We loved absolutely everything, but our favourites were the rump of beef and matchstick fries, monkfish and pork belly starter and dauphinoise and carbonara-loaded fries.
I chose a satin fishtail dress from TDR Bridal Birmingham. It was designed by Élysée Bridal and fit me like a glove! It was the second dress I tried on and it had the simplicity I wanted but was so beautiful that I knew it was the one. The material and the buttons that went all the way down the train made me fall in love with it. I had a long veil with satin edging that I was able to get personalised with our initials and wedding date. I wore a pair of pearl and diamond drop earrings that belonged to Sam’s nan and a gold and pearl bracelet from Etsy. My shoes were crystal-covered stiletto sandals from Jimmy Choo, which sparkled in the sunlight and were incredible!
Gieves & Hawkes provided Sam’s midnight blue three-piece tuxedo and velvet jacket, which stood out from the groomsmen’s black tuxedos. He finished the look with Christian Louboutin shoes and a white rose lining on his jacket to match the wedding flowers.
Every part of the day was perfect; it’s hard to put my finger on just one special moment! The vows, hearing the church bells, laughing in the field and walking into the secret walled dining room to cheering and napkins flying were all some of our favourites.
It’s difficult to put into words the happiness and love we felt that day. We said that the moment we saw each other, the nerves disappeared, and we were just elated to be getting married and to celebrate with the people we love the most! I don’t think either of us has ever smiled or laughed so much, and it was truly magical from start to finish.
Apollo Gold performed in the evening and they were incredible. From the first minute to the last, the dancefloor was completely full, and the atmosphere was amazing. Everybody has said how much they loved the band and wished they didn’t have to stop! They also provided a DJ and sax to keep the party going late into the evening.

Over the rainbow
Emily and Nathan opted for a colourful wedding at Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens

and Nathan met online and hit it off right away. “He was a nice guy to talk to and good looking, which of course, helped,” says Emily. “Nathan proposed to me in July 2020 in the Shropshire Hills. He took the biggest rucksack in the world and filled it with fleeces, waterproofs and everything you would need, even though it was July! I didn’t think much of it, but he later said that he didn’t want me to find the ring, so he filled it to the brim in case I needed anything! Just before he proposed, there was a steep hill, I remember walking up and turning around, and he was fumbling around with the bag, and I thought, ‘I’m just going to carry on as this hill is too steep to wait around!’. At that moment, Nathan was grabbing the ring from the bag and putting it in his pocket! When we reached the top, he took a photo with my back facing him. I remember standing there for ages and saying, ‘Are you done yet?’ Nathan replied, ‘Nearly there’, but he sounded like he was standing right behind me, so I responded with, ‘You’re standing too close, the photo is going to be rubbish!’ He soon shouted, ‘Done!’, and I turned around, and there he was, down on one knee with the box. He hadn’t even opened it yet, and I burst into tears.”
SETTING THE SCENE
“The first time we walked around Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens, we knew we wanted to get married there,” shares the bride. “It was recommended by Elite Tents, but the gardens spoke for themselves and had a unique beauty. It was grand yet understated and was perfect for what we wanted. A lot of the decorations I either made myself or knew someone who could do them. Our general colour scheme was based on the rainbow, as I’ve always pictured my day bright and colourful with an assortment of flowers and decorations. I had coloured ribbons hanging off the chairs and in the tipis. We also had LED candles and sweet jars wrapped in hessian that sat between the gin bottles. Elite Tents did an amazing job of making the tipis look grand with minimal decorations.”
The happy couple named their tables after gins. “We both love it and couldn’t think of anything else that resembled us more,” explains Emily. “For our favours, we gave our guests little bottles of Damson gin that my father-in-law’s wife made from their garden. We also incorporated gin into our table plan. We found an old step ladder from an antique shop, which I sanded and repainted white. I then added photo frames and gin bottles filled with the flowers that our florist used for the bouquets.
“For our centrepieces, we wanted to keep it simple, so my father-in-law cut pieces of wood, sanded and stained them,” adds Emily. “On each piece of wood, we had a different gin brand with a blue moon rose, which was Nathan’s nan’s favourite flower. We also had a photo of us from our engagement shoot and a geometric flower pot with a little money plant in it; these are good luck in the Chinese culture.”
Emily’s best friend made their big-day cake. “She likes baking in her spare time, so she made our three-tier naked bake,” recalls the bride. “We had three different flavours: the bottom tier was Victoria sponge, the middle was chocolate, and the top was caramel. I also asked some family members and friends to make cakes, so we had our wedding cake and a cake table! I am a big foodie and love to feed people, so this reflected my personality.”
The Greek Outdoors provided the food for the day. “It was delicious,” reveals Emily. “Chris was an absolute dream to work with. We were able to try the food ahead of time; she was reassuring and happy to cater for kids and dietary requirements. She was so personal, and I never felt like I was hassling her when we spoke. The transaction was easy, everyone complimented their food, and I would highly recommend them! Arden Pig Company provided the evening food; they accommodated our vegetarians and people raved about the hog roast.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
“My dress was by Justin Alexander,” says Emily. “I was adamant that I was going to have sleeves, but in the end, I went for strapless and was over the moon with my choice. I debated for a long time between two completely different dresses; one was very bohemian, but ultimately, I felt I could wear it any day of the week, which made my gown feel even more special. I only went to one shop, and that was TDR Bridal Birmingham in Halesowen; Mia was an absolute dream to work with! I tried a princess dress to humour one of my bridesmaids, which was beautiful but definitely not me! I accessorised with a veil, which was the same length as my train, and a lovely belt.”
Nathan wore a navy suit from Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire. “He wanted the groomsmen to match and to ensure that everyone knew they were part of the wedding party,” explains Emily. “They chose blue ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. For these, I ordered the same gown in a couple of different colours, and I loved how different it looked, as I hadn’t seen it before. It was a perfect fit for all of my bridesmaids, and they all felt comfortable, which was what was most important to me.”
Emily
REAL WEDDINGS 33
TIME TO CELEBRATE
“We hired a family friend to be the DJ for us and some garden games from West Midland Events,” shares the bride. “These went down a treat, as we had children amongst the party. Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens also had a couple of games set up, so there was plenty to do! In addition to this, the garden was so big that we encouraged people to explore the premises.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
“The morning went so quickly,” recalls Emily. “I just enjoyed every moment, and before I knew it, I was getting into my dress! I remember arriving at the church and Jason, the photographer, telling me that Nathan was nervous! There are even photos of him looking nervous before I walked down the aisle. Just before I walked into the church, I was very emotional and nearly burst into tears, but luckily some family members arrived a little late, so that distracted me!
“One of my favourite moments was my dad’s and brother’s speeches,” continues Emily. “It’s the first time I have ever heard my dad say he is proud of me. I burst into tears as soon as he said it, and I don’t think there was a dry eye after his speech. I asked my brother to do a speech as we are very close, and the two combined made my heart full!”
Emily and Nathan were incredibly happy with how their big day turned out. “It was such a beautiful day, and the weather was perfect,” reveals Emily. “If it had been the week before, I think everyone would have struggled as the temperatures had been around 30 degrees, but we were lucky enough for it to be around 23. We had the best time, and wish we could relive it all over again! So many of our friends and family were there, and it was genuinely the most perfect day. All the vendors made our day feel special, however, our photographers, Shepherd Photography, were absolute perfection and went above and beyond for us! While Eve was taking all of our group shots and when I say all, I had a big list that took a few hours to complete! Jason made sure Nathan and I had drinks, and he also took shots of everyone else mingling while they were going on. This also couldn’t have happened without my brother and the best men. They went around gathering everyone for us, and it was seamless! I did check that everyone didn’t feel like they were waiting around, but the feedback was that everyone was enjoying talking and relaxing before the speeches and food.”
HONEYMOON
“Our honeymoon was organised by a company called Luxtripper,” says Emily. “They were so helpful and made everything easy. We were meant to have gone to Sri Lanka for three nights and the Maldives for 10 nights, however, four months before the wedding, riots broke out in Sri Lanka, and we decided we didn’t want to go there. We had booked our honeymoon about a year and a half before the wedding, so we appreciated that things were probably going to be quite expensive to change around. Luxtripper gave us a couple of options but was honest about the rise in cost. We decided to cancel Sri Lanka, keep the Maldives, and separately book Naples for four nights beforehand instead. Naples was beautiful, and the Maldives was perfection! We got to see sea turtles, sharks and dolphins; it was the most magical holiday we have ever experienced, and we would highly recommend it!”

A never-ending love
Laura and Rich had a rustic-themed celebration at The Guildhall Images courtesy of Ten Foot Tall Photography
Like most modern couples, Laura and Rich met online. “We went out for dinner for our first date,” says Laura. “Rich brought a book of conversation starters in case we had nothing to talk about. Luckily, it stayed in his pocket, as we had a lot in common. My first impression of Rich, with his designer shirt, leather jacket and earrings, was, ‘Yikes, this guy is going to be way too cool for me’, but he turned out to be just as nerdy as I am; I needn’t have worried. We bonded over our shared love of sci-fi and fantasy, and he impressed me with the first thing he cooked: chicken and pesto lasagne.”
Rich asked Laura to be his wife while on a walk in Buxton. “We’d gone away for a few days and came across a beautiful monument called Solomon’s Temple on the top of a hill. I remember I was in a grumpy mood because of something that had happened at work, so we were looking out over these glorious views of the Peak District, and I was still chuntering away, when he came out with, ‘I don’t have a ring, but’. I think he only did it to cheer me up and change the subject, but it was still an amazing moment. The fact that it was unplanned also means I got to choose my ring, so it worked out perfectly.
“I grew up in Lichfield, so I’ve been to The Guildhall many times for events, concerts and choir rehearsals when I was little,” adds Laura. “The hall is beautiful, and you can sense the history, but at the same time, it’s a blank canvas. We loved the idea of having our ceremony and reception in the same place, and the fact that it’s in the city centre was perfect as we were able to get photos with gorgeous backdrops such as the Cathedral and Stowe Pool.”
Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
REAL WEDDINGS 37
We liked the idea of a DIY wedding where we would have total control over all the suppliers, and Helen from The Guildhall was incredibly helpful and super flexible. The hall is beautiful just as it is, but we asked our decorator, Lynne from Wright’s Events - Cakes, Catering & Venue Dressing, to add a few rustic touches.
We had jam jars full of flowers lining the aisle for the ceremony, and we re-used these as table decorations. We encouraged our guests to take them home so that nothing went to waste.
Rich and I decided not to have favours, as we wanted the wedding to be fairly environmentally friendly. Instead, we had an open bar, which our guests were pretty happy with!
We love going for long walks and spotting squirrels, so we chose a woodland-themed cake with two chocolate squirrels on top. The tiers were like stacked logs, with our initials carved into them in a heart shape.
We did all our invitations and RSVPs digitally and skipped the confetti to make the wedding more sustainable.
The only instructions I gave to Rob, our florist, were that I wanted my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ flowers to be seasonal and colourful. He put together some gorgeous bouquets that were the colours of the rainbow and matched my veil, which was also multi-coloured.
38
We used a vintage Citroën Traction Avant, which I found through a classic car owners’ club. Kelvin, a local enthusiast who owned the car, very kindly drove us on the day.
Rich and I wanted a grazing buffet, and Westwoods Kitchen did an incredible job. It was like an afternoon tea crossed with a big picnic, which our guests loved. In the evening, we had pizza from Dirty Donkey Ltd, a company started in lockdown by four lads I used to teach. They did a fabulous job, and their company has gone from strength to strength – it was great fun getting selfies with them in the pizza van!
My dress was called Olive by Monsoon, and I loved it as soon as I saw it. I wanted to be comfortable on the day, and the slightly unstructured style fitted well with our overall ambience. My veil came from a designer on Etsy and was covered in embroidered flowers, and my shoes were embellished flats that I bought secondhand on eBay.
Rich wore a blue checked suit from House Of Cavani. His tie went brilliantly with the beautiful orange gerberas that our florist provided for the buttonholes.
For me, it was really important to let my bridesmaids choose their outfits, and I was happy for them to wear any colours or styles that they liked and felt comfortable in. Not having a colour scheme gave them loads of flexibility, but in the end, they all settled on navy blue, which happens to be my favourite colour.
During the day, we just wanted people to chat, eat, drink and enjoy themselves, so we didn’t have any entertainment as such. However, Rich and I are both huge fans of the TV show Taskmaster, so we put silly challenges on every table. We encouraged our guests to take photos of themselves doing the tasks and upload them to the WedShoots App so that we could have a good laugh afterwards. As a nod to Rich’s emergency questions that he brought to our first date, we also made little booklets of daft questions for our guests to ask each other.
REAL WEDDINGS 39
In the evening, we had a brilliant DJ and a photo booth, both of which went down well with our guests.
We felt incredibly happy but surprisingly relaxed on the morning of the wedding! Having a relatively unstructured and informal vibe made it possible to enjoy ourselves. I couldn’t stop smiling all day; it was just really joyful. Even though it was March, it was a gloriously sunny day. Martin and Louise, our photographers from Ten Foot Tall Photography, did a fabulous job capturing our massive grins!
The ceremony was beautiful; our best friends did readings from our favourite authors, and it was really sweet to see in the photos how emotional my dad was walking me down the aisle. I also loved our speeches; we kept them short but also made everyone laugh. While the room was set up for the reception, we encouraged our guests to go on a scavenger hunt around Lichfield. We’d arranged for special clues to be put up in shop windows, and there was a worksheet to fill in. Loads of our guests loved it, but my teacher friends headed straight to the pub!
The food was one of my favourite parts. Our caterers were amazing and went beyond our wildest expectations. They catered really generously, so there were quite a few leftovers, and my dad got straight on the phone and arranged for a local charity to collect the spare food so that nothing went to waste. That meant a lot because we wanted to throw away as little as possible. I also got some of my ex-students to be bartenders for us; they did an amazing job, and it was lovely to have them as part of the day.
For our honeymoon, we took a 17-day train trip through Europe. Neither of us are beach people, but we love cities and culture. We had stops in Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich. We planned it together, with some help from my dad, and had the best time.

MEET DEAN SHARPE FROM DEAN SHARPE’S FLORAL STUDIO
Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist?
I always had a creative flair growing up and a real passion for flowers, but it wasn’t until I turned 30 that I decided I wanted to work in floristry. I’d had various jobs prior to becoming a trained florist, generally involving some form of creativity, but once I began my floristry training, I knew that this was going to be the industry I wanted to remain in. I studied at the amazing Moreton Morrell College, then opened my business in 2017, which has continued to grow from strength to strength.
What should couples expect when booking your services?
I offer a personalised service to my couples, and I’m always happy to work around them. They can come to me with lots of ideas or no ideas at all, and I know what questions to ask to make sure we create something special together. There are so many different factors to consider when organising your wedding that any supplier must be flexible and take the time to fully understand what the couple is looking for. It’s never one size fits all with wedding flowers, and that’s why I ensure each couple has a one-on-one consultation with me, whether it be an initial phone call, video call or meeting in person, to allow them to really get to know me and my business.
What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why?
Wow, that’s a really hard question as I’ve done so many different weddings over the years. I would say I always love making the bridal bouquet, as it’s unique to each bride and is the first time they get to see the flowers after all the planning. It can sometimes be a tissue moment, so the make-up artists don’t always love me for that!
How long before the wedding should couples book?
I recommend that couples actively start searching for their florist once they have secured their date and venue for the big day. Weddings are often years in the making, and therefore it’s best to get in touch with all of your suppliers as early as possible to save the date and ultimately avoid disappointment by not being able to have your first choice.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I love interacting with couples throughout the whole process. There is something really special about playing a small part in their special day and helping them bring their ideas to life. My absolute favourite part has to be seeing the bride/groom on the morning of their wedding – it’s always full of happy emotions!
Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist?
Book early and do your research! You only get one shot at the big day, so you want to make sure you have a trusted florist working with you to create something beautiful. Check their websites, social media pages, and look at pictures of their work, but most importantly, check previous customer reviews. The social media pages for floristry businesses can often play a big part in couples choosing their wedding florist, but always make sure that the content displayed on their pages (and website) is their own work.

MEET HEATHER AMOR FROM THE FLOWER
KITCHEN FLORIST
Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? I came to floristry after working for years in the jewellery industry, it was creative but unsatisfactory, so I took my chance after I had my first daughter and enrolled in a floristry course for fun at my local college when I was on maternity leave. It was a release from the everyday humdrum, and I was hooked almost immediately.
What should couples expect when booking your services? Attention to detail, friendly communication, and spectacular flowers!
What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why?
I love making arrangements in milk churns, pedestal arrangements and archways – there is so much scope for texture and colour, which I adore, and the final impact can be breathtaking!
How long before the wedding should couples book? Usually, my couples book a year in advance; I find that can be quite manageable and not too long to wait until the big day.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Talking to the bride, meeting her expectations, and handing over the bridal bouquet. Usually, there isn’t a dry eye in the house!
MEET CIRIAN-MARIE BEDDOES OWNER OF BRAMBLE BEES FLORIST
Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? After three years of quite a complicated medical experience, I changed my 25-year career as a registered dietitian to embark on this new, exciting, and rewarding career path as an independent florist. I walked past a vacant shop building on Dickens Heath and made the decision there and then to follow a more creative path hence Bramble Bees Florist. I sourced the funding and opened the shop two days before the first lockdown in October 2020. We managed to keep trading through the various restrictions by offering ‘Petals from the Pavement’ so no direct customer contact and have since adapted to sell ice cream, dog treats and garden tools as well as our fabulous flowers.
We’re an independent florist and gift shop, and we deliver our beautiful bouquets throughout Dickens Heath, Shirley, Solihull, and Birmingham, and we can often offer same-day delivery.
I have superb staff; Naomi and my daughter Ella are always on hand to offer their expertise and ensure my job is a wonderful, creative and fun environment to work in.
What should couples expect when booking your services?
We offer our couples and their extended bridal party a free consultation over a cup of tea, where we will go through all of the details for your big day. You’re welcome to bring your partner, bridesmaids, or family with you to see if we’re the right fit for your wedding. It’s important that you feel connected to your florist and are excited to work with them, so we leave the decision completely up to you and there’s no pressure to book. We offer a set price for our flowers, so you know what you’re paying up front, but if you’re looking for a specific flower that’s not readily available, there may be an extra cost.
What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why?
All our bouquets are hand-tied, and I love it when they feature peonies, veronicas, roses or alstroemeria pearls.
How long before the wedding should couples book?
We can cater for weddings booked years in advance but can also

accommodate last-minute bookings. I’d say three months is ideal as we always have flowers arriving in the store. As long as we have the staff available to create your flowers and transport them, we’ll try our best to meet your needs.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
I love meeting the happy couple before the wedding and getting to see the love and excitement between them. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing we get to be a part of their love story.
I also love delivering the flowers and seeing the bride’s reaction. It’s so emotional seeing them get excited and looking forward to the day ahead, and we adore getting a card in the post after the wedding telling us all about how the day went.
Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist?
Make sure they have a website and are keeping it up-to-date and check out their reviews to see what previous couples thought of their services. Meet the florist face-to-face if possible, and don’t be afraid to say it isn’t going to work if you don’t feel a good connection with them. You need to build a relationship with your florist; it’s such an important day in your life and you need to make sure you trust the person helping bring your dream flowers to life.

MEET CAROLINE STOKES FROM PALM & PEONY FLOWERS
Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist? I have a design degree, but once I left university, I missed creative work, so I took a course in floristry, which snowballed into doing specialist wedding courses and workshops, and now, eight years later, I’m a fully-fledged wedding flowers expert!
What should couples expect when booking your services? You can expect a kind and friendly service where I will guide you through your design choices and show you the flowers that will work with your colour scheme and how to make the most from your budget. We will spend time together having a consultation, from which I will create a proposal for you with your bespoke quote and vision board. If necessary, we can have a venue visit, and on your big day, I will deliver and set up all of your flowers, working with your other suppliers to create your floral vision!
What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why?
I am obsessed with a table centrepiece I created recently for the most fun wedding! My couple had chosen a yurt venue where they had a festival-style wedding, and the view through the opening to the yurt perfectly framed the central top table and the view up to the incredible ceiling of the yurt. I created a huge, tall centrepiece full of red and blush flowers that was just perfectly placed to be seen as soon as you stepped into the yurt.
How long before the wedding should couples book? Ideally, 12-18 months, but I have couples book me with just a few months before their wedding, so it’s always worth checking to see if I’m available!
MEET CHLOË EYERS FROM HONESTY FLOWERS
Tell us about your background – how did you become a florist?
I’m a flower farmer and I started my business back in October 2020. I’ve always enjoyed growing and arranging flowers, so after a big move out of London with my family, it felt like the right time to pursue a career in something I’ve always loved to do.
What should couples expect when booking your services?
Our wedding collections offer an easy and stress-free way to pick your flowers. With three different-sized packages to choose from, there’s something to fit everyone’s budget. Using fresh seasonal flowers, grown on our field in Henley-in-Arden, the flowers reflect the time of year and are picked for a colour scheme. We also offer a bespoke service for a small number of weddings throughout the growing season, from April to October. For both services, it all starts with a quick email to confirm your wedding date and then a chat to discuss your day in more detail.
What’s your favourite wedding arrangement that you’ve made and why?
It has to be the bridal bouquet. Weddings are busy, and with so much going on for the couple, things can be a bit of a blur. It all stops when you hand over the bridal bouquet. There’s nothing more satisfying for a florist than hearing the squeals of delight and seeing the happiness on a bride’s face when she receives her flowers.
How long before the wedding should couples book?
For a bespoke wedding, 12 months is ideal. This gives me time to incorporate the couple’s preferences in terms of colours and flower types into my growing schedule for the coming season.
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Without a doubt, it’s the moment I hand over a bridal bouquet. This is quite often the first moment of the day when it sinks in that you are a bride! It can be a really special and emotional moment where the months of planning lead to you receiving your beautiful bouquet, and I feel so privileged to be a part of it.
Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist?
Know your budget! It’s typical to spend 10-15 per cent of your overall budget on your flowers, so factor that in before contacting a potential florist. Knowing how much you’d like to spend can help your florist explain how to get the most out of your money!
Trust your florist; we are the experts and know what will work and what will look amazing!

What’s your favourite part of the job?
My favourite part of the job is curating the flowers, selecting the best flowers and foliage, and making something beautiful for my clients.
Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a florist?
My top tip would be to take a little bit of time to get to know your florist. It’s important to understand their style and how they work, not just whether they can deliver within your budget.

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

What destinations are popular for honeymoons?
Honeymooners are naturally drawn to destinations that exude romance and tranquillity, making sandy beaches an obvious choice. Two standout locations are Mauritius and the Maldives, renowned for their secluded beaches adorned with white sand, gentle waves, and breathtaking sunsets. For newly-weds, where could possibly be more perfect than the backdrop of a pristine beach to start their new chapter together? However, the appeal of honeymoon destinations extends beyond the allure of sandy beaches alone. Other popular destinations showcase stunning natural landscapes, offering a plethora of activities to enjoy. From hiking the lush rainforests and dramatic coastal cliffs of Antigua to exploring the iconic Pitons and Sulphur Springs of Saint Lucia, honeymooners can truly be immersed in a country’s unique vibrancy and culture.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
We’re having an outdoor wedding; will we still be able to hire a band?
An outdoor wedding is a fantastic opportunity to hire a band and create a truly unforgettable atmosphere! There’s nothing quite like the experience of live music under the open sky. There are a few points to consider to ensure a seamless performance. Access to power is crucial if your band requires amplification, so check if your venue can provide this or if your band has portable power options. The performance area should be flat and dry for safety reasons, and your musicians will need overhead cover to protect them and their equipment from unpredictable weather. Sound restrictions are also something to bear in mind, especially if your venue is close to residential areas.
If all this seems a bit overwhelming, don’t worry! From acoustic folk bands that can perform unplugged to full-scale pop and rock bands performing festival-style, there’s an act out there that’s right for you.
HOLD ME CLOSE
I’m slightly confused about what a celebrant does! Can you help?
The best thing a celebrant brings to the table is themselves. People often overlook the fact that celebrants are individuals, and each bring something different to the industry. Before booking, look at their reviews, do some research on social media and take plenty of time to chat with a few.
Some celebrants are formal, some are warm and cuddly, some are subtle, some are colourful or funny, and some are just plain bonkers. You can do the legal stuff at your local registry office and then choose any venue you like for the celebrant-led ceremony of your dreams.
A good celebrant will take the time to listen to you and offer advice on poems, music, unity ceremonies, logistics, and lots of other things. They will tell your love story, help you prepare your vows, include the ring exchange and a commitment certificate and involve everyone as directed. They will take a genuine interest in your day and make you feel confident and at ease in their company. They will write you a script that suits your style and is special to you as a couple and work with you to create a ceremony that you will remember for all the right reasons.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE
What questions should we ask a wedding caterer before booking?
When it comes to your wedding day, food and drink will be an integral part, from succulent roast dinners to Mediterranean platters and street-food style burgers – there’s a vast array of options available. Here are my top 20 questions to ask your caterer to make sure you get the perfect food for you:
•How far in advance do we need to book our wedding caterers?
•What kind of menu options do you offer?
•What is the price per head?
•Can we organise a menu tasting to try some food options?
•What is your cancellation policy?
A DAY TO REMEMBER
My wife-to-be and I are thinking of booking a registry office for our wedding, what’s the process and how long before the wedding should we book?
Your ceremony can be booked up to two years in advance. The ceremony team at your registry office should be on hand to guide you throughout the planning process. For example, our team is always available and can give you a tour of our manor house to help you decide which of the three beautiful rooms you would like for your ceremony. Once you have chosen the room, you can visit our website from the comfort of your home to book your ceremony.
Once the booking has been made, the venue should offer an appointment with its ceremony coordinator, who will talk you through your special day and give you the opportunity to create a bespoke ceremony with any extras required.

Fall in love with glamorous styled shoot at Bourton Hall
Images courtesy of LB Photography
The inspiration for this shoot came from Bourton Hall, where Caroline Stokes from Palm & Peony Flowers was amazed by the contrasting dark wood staircase and the bright façade of the chapel. “I knew that each of these spaces would look stunning filled with colour,” adds Caroline. “The Italian Renaissance style doors were calling out to be shrouded in rich summer florals. We chose a timeless, summer glamour theme, and each of the suppliers contributed to the sense of elegance. The florals were the star of the show, with rich pinks, corals and oranges paired with soft peaches and blush used throughout. Having two female models meant that we could show two looks that embodied the theme; the first was a sexy vibe in sleek satin with sultry waves and a smoky eye, and our second model wore sparkles and a low bun with shimmering skin for a more youthful look. The layering of colour and texture were important in the Banqueting Hall, so we chose a grand, floral centrepiece and golden table linen to contrast the pink glassware and modern stationery.”

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
78

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.
Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
BEAUTY QUEEN
How do I create a fresh-faced dewy finish for my summer wedding?
I always tell my brides that creating a fresh and glowing complexion starts with good preparation. Here are a few tips to help you create a beautiful glow:
Hydration – Glowing skin starts from within. Ensure you’re drinking three litres of water a day; this will flush out toxins and reveal a healthy glow that is difficult to create with make-up alone.
Skincare – Take time to thoroughly cleanse, moisturise and protect your skin and add SPF in the morning. Exfoliating and using ‘harsher’ products should happen two to five times a week. Book in to see a skin specialist and follow their advice on specific products and treatments that are tailored to your needs.
Make-up – On the big day, begin with your morning skincare routine followed by an illuminating primer, and buff this well into the skin. Follow with a light layer of foundation. Apply a creamy concealer to any areas that need a little more coverage and blend well. Add definition and dimension using a cream bronzer and blush. Finish with a liquid highlighter on your cheekbones and high points and lightly blend. Set your look with a generous amount of setting spray. Remember to keep your setting spray on hand to freshen up your look throughout the day!

CLASSIC ROMANCE
I’m looking for an elegant dress that’s easy to dance the night away in. What would you suggest?
Look for an A-line dress and add a small hoop petticoat underneath to keep it slightly away from your legs so you can make some moves on the dancefloor.
Chiffon is a very floaty, lightweight material that will glide around while you dance, whereas lace can be a little more structured but is still elegant and offers enough movement for dancing the night away.

SUITED AND BOOTED
What are the latest menswear trends?
The classic black tuxedo remains a style icon, with peak and shawl lapel tuxedos gaining popularity. These modern suits offer versatility, with tailored and slim-fit options available.
Textured fabrics like velvet, linen, tweed, and seersucker are trending for different seasons.
Consider bold colours and patterns, such as plaid and floral, to add some personality to your look. Distinctive shoes will allow you to showcase your style, and statement accessories like cufflinks, ties, pocket squares, and boutonnières are also on the rise.

HONEYMOON NEWS 87
MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I
ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Bond. The name’s Bond. No this isn’t a new film location of an upcoming James Bond movie, it’s The Muraka - a first-of-its-kind, luxury two-level residence with a master bedroom submerged some 16ft below sea level in the Indian Ocean. If money’s no problem, then honeymoon like Paris Hilton and go for it!
There’s so much more to say, but I’ll leave you to find out the rest for yourselves. Do indulge, it’s worth it. To book, visit the website: www.conradmaldives.com
HONEYMOON REVIEW 89
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 91
Do not disturb
Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.

Honeymooners are naturally drawn to destinations that exude romance and tranquillity, making sandy beaches an obvious choice. Two standout locations are Mauritius and the Maldives, renowned for their secluded beaches adorned with white sand, gentle waves, and breathtaking sunsets. However, the appeal of honeymoon destinations extends beyond the allure of sandy beaches alone. Other popular destinations are those showcasing stunning natural landscapes, offering a plethora of activities to enjoy. From hiking the lush rainforests and dramatic coastal cliffs of Antigua to exploring the iconic Pitons and Sulphur Springs of St Lucia, honeymooners can truly be emersed in a country’s unique vibrancy and culture.
