THINK GREEN

The multi-award-winning Oakman Group is dedicated to helping the planet and has planted a million trees to help reduce the company’s daily carbon emissions.

www.woodlandmanorhotel.co.uk

SAY “I DOS”

Situated on the outskirts of Bedford, Woodland Manor Hotel is a beautiful wedding venue that’s launching a new reception package.

The Venue with a Heart package is available to all couples who want to celebrate their special day on a limited budget. Available until April 2023, couples can host memorable receptions Mondays to Thursdays from 5 pm to 11 pm in the Autograph Suite surrounded by 40 loved ones for only £1,999.

The package has been specifically tailored by the events team, who work with local suppliers to provide the best experience possible for pairs with many wedding must-haves.

Couples who book the package will receive help from an on-site wedding coordinator, a professional photographer to capture the day, a DJ to entertain loved ones in the evening, use of the grounds for photos and a red-carpet welcome. Chair covers and sashes, candle-themed centrepieces, a welcome sign and a cake stand will also be provided. In the evening, guests can enjoy a hot buffet, a two-tiered cake, a mini doughnut wall and a sweet station.

Additional upgrades are available for an additional price; this includes a photo booth, welcome drinks, a hog roast, extra guests, ceremony hire and more!

For more information, check out: www.woodlandmanorhotel.co.uk

The business was founded 15 years ago and owns two Bedfordshire-based pubs, The Woburn and The White Hart– a popular wedding venue in Ampthill. For every cup sold across the group’s pubs and hotels, the team committed to planting one tree through Tree Nation. This fantastic not-for-profit organisation helps local communities by creating jobs and protecting biodiversity worldwide.

The trees planted covered almost 450 hectares of reforested land in both Madagascar’s Eden project and the Usambara Biodiversity Conservation project in Tanzania, all thanks to selling 2,500 cups of coffee daily.

To celebrate the achievement, the founder and chairman of the Oakman Group, Peter Borg-Neal, planted an oak tree in the company’s new Oakman Kitchen Garden at The Akeman Inn in Kingswood with assistance from his team. Peter says, “We couldn’t have achieved our first year’s target without the support of our guests. Planting this young Oak is a simple commemoration of what small groups can do with little effort or personal impact, while having profound effects. For example, we were the first pub group to ban plastic straws, eventually leading to their national disappearance, as well as the first pub group to install electric charging points in our new pub car parks. We always seek ways to make a difference without losing sight of our commercial responsibilities.”

WITH…

We caught up with Ross Mac, the director at RM Event Solutions to discover more about the company and how they can create memorable weddings.

When did you start the company?

I’ve been performing for thirty years after playing at my first nightclub in 1993, aged 13, and I’ve been sharing my love for music ever since. From Ibiza, Las Vegas, Monaco, Marbella, Thailand, and Uganda, I’ve played all over the world alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. I’ve also played at some of the UK’s biggest festivals, celebrity parties and numerous media and fashion industry events. I’ve recently discovered a passion for giving couples the wedding of their dreams

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I merge my years of experience in the clubland with the passion and drive that’s present in everything I do. I combine singers, sax players, and bongo performers alongside the industry’s best DJs to create a unforgettable wedding experience.

How can you add the wow factor to

events?

Experience makes an event truly great, having the gift to read a crowd and being two or three records ahead of the dancefloor is essential. We’ve seen significant changes in styles, trends, technology and, of course, a virus which impacted our much-loved world like nothing we could have imagined. Our experience and knowledge have allowed us to be flexible, adaptable and one step ahead during even the most testing of times with the best service, the freshest ideas and the most suitable sound solutions.

BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL

Ampthill-based Rambling Stems Floristry has made it to the regional finals of The Wedding Industry Awards 2023 in two categories.

The artisan wedding florist creates beautifully natural bespoke florals with an eco-conscious ethos, think nature-inspired and wild blooms. The team are thrilled to be announced as a regional finalist for the florist and newcomer categories for the East of England.

The awards have 27 different categories and cover eight regions. Once companies enter the awards, it’s down to clients to vote for their wedding suppliers before the judging process begins.

Ali Conway, founder of Rambling Stems Floristry, came to floral design after an award-winning career in Garden Design and was shocked by the environmental impact of the new industry she had entered. She says, “I want to bring the outdoors in and create beautifully natural florals for my couples. What I don’t want to do is leave a huge amount of plastic, cellophane, chemicals and nasty floral foam behind!

“At Rambling Stems, we use old-fashioned methods that were used before floral foam was even invented! Chicken wire within vessels, vase containers, moss for hydration and reusable water tubes are used to keep flowers fresh. Nothing goes to waste, everything is recyclable.”

The company uses British blooms grown from local flower farms and native foliage as much as possible while focusing more on seasonal availability.

Mum’s the word at Cream of Royston

Once you know your son or daughter is getting married a wedding is just the excuse you need for dressing up. Bride aside all eyes will be on the Mums. Cream has been trading in Royston for 47 years and is predominantly a special occasion store. The extensive stock on two floors is colour co-ordinated for ease of selection. Everything is available from outfits (sizes 6-28) to shoes, bags, hats, hatinators, fascinators and lingerie. Brands stocked include Condici, Ispirato, John Charles and Veni Infantino. Dressed up, Lewis Henry and Ann Balon are perfect for plus sizes. Less formalwear from Frank Lyman, Veromia, and Alison is ideal for a day at the races, wedding abroad or guests and cruising.

Mothers usually purchase their outfits four months before the event and customers are given the option to change it if they see something they prefer later, but they rarely do. Once everything gels and you have the wow factor you have found the outfit. It is usual for the mothers to coordinate with the wedding party. It is very important to be comfortable with what you are wearing. A shift dress with

a garment. Cream has a well stocked lingerie department which can be tried on with the outfit. A free alteration service is available on all full priced outfits bought in store, a fitting being carried out six weeks before the event, thus ensuring a perfect fit. Shoes and bags are made in Spain in different heel heights and beautiful leathers.

Luminous, delicate makeup styles for elegant brides. Using luxury products and brands to suit you. Look and feel amazing on your special day.

The Sale shop, Occasions for less located opposite Cream in Roysia House offers mother of the bride and groom outfits, shoes, bags, hats and hatinators from previous seasons at fantastic prices. THE CLUB AT MILL GREEN 01707 276 900 | www.millgreengolf.co.uk

Nestled in more than 200 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, The Club at Mill Green is a modern and spacious venue that provides the perfect setting for weddings.

With beautiful views over the picturesque golf course and lake, the venue provided the ideal backdrop for those all-important pictures.

Exchange vows in The Salisbury Suite surrounded by 150 loved ones; this light and elegant space is ideal for creating cherished moments with loved ones. Continue the celebrations with 160 seated guests or 220 standing in the Lake View and Salisbury Suite. With modern and understated décor, the area allows couples to transform the room to match any colour scheme. The private terrace alongside the space has

recently been renovated to match the interior and to give guests the ideal space to enjoy drinks receptions. Couples can use the area no matter the temperature or daylight quality thanks to its heating and lighting.

Included in the venue’s packages is a complimentary menu tasting session for the couple with the option to bring along friends and family to encompass what the venue truly offers. The team invites entertainers, their wine supplier and recommended companies to enable couples to plan all aspects of their day. Pairs will also receive an invitation for a complimentary lunch on their first anniversary or a tee time for golf with three guests.

The staff try to include as much as possible within the packages, so lovebirds have less to think about during the planning process – they have you covered with a chair sashes, an easel, a cake stand and a cake knife.

HOUSE HOSPITALITY

Based in Hertfordshire, Hatfield House Hospitality offers two unique wedding venues ideal for truly memorable occasions.

The magnificent Tudor Old Palace, built in 1485, was the childhood home of Elizabeth I and is where she held her first Council of State. It’s one of the foremost examples of Mediaeval brickwork in the country, and with its original wood beams, guests will be surrounded by history. The Tapestry, elegantly hanging in the Old Palace, is a replica of the original Devonshire Hunting Series that can now be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The Old Palace can accommodate large weddings from 80 to 250 guests on long or round banqueting tables – there’s even space for a DJ and dancefloor. The bar attached to the room is the perfect space to add additional entertainment like photo booths.

The stunning and open Knot Garden, attached to the Old Palace, is based on Elizabethan patterns and provides the most picturesque location. The Raised Lawn is perfect for outdoor blessings, drinks receptions and lawn games with breathtaking views of Hatfield House, home to Lord and Lady Salisbury who reside there today.

Hatfield House is a renowned filming location for blockbuster hits

such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Batman Begins, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, as well as Netflix productions such as The Crown, The Great, and Bridgerton

The other venue, The Riding School, blends historic features with modern architecture to offer a contemporary alternative for weddings. Located in the Stable Yard, its origin was to accommodate horses and motor cars. In 2010, the Riding School was transformed into what it is today. Its glass roof allows the room to be flooded with natural daylight, and the mezzanine level adds versatile characteristics. The space is a fitting venue for smaller weddings with 40 to 150 guests. The Riding School can also be hired out in conjunction with the Old Palace.

Both venues are licensed for civil ceremonies and have ample free parking plus direct train links with Hatfield Station adjacent to Hatfield Park.

The properties have an award-winning team with dedicated event planners and operational staff to help seamlessly plan and deliver special occasions. They offer a range of packages for nearlyweds, which can be tweaked to suit different requirements.

Hatfield House Hospitality has won many awards from the likes of Best of Britain, The Wedding Industry Awards and Weddings Inc Wedding Industry Awards 2022 to name a few.

ALLUM MANOR HOUSE & HALL 02089 533 415 | www.allummanor.co.uk

Situated in the heart of Elstree and Borehamwood, Allum Manor House and Hall offers the perfect backdrop to nuptials.

Close to the M25, M1, A1 and a short walk from the train stations, the venue is the ideal space for guests travelling in.

The attractive grounds around the venue and the gardens offer the ideal backdrop for photographs and outdoor ceremonies. The groundsman works hard to keep these spaces well-stocked and tidy.

The Grade II listed manor offers a choice of six smaller wedding spaces and can accommodate up to 470 people with theatre-style seating or 350 to 375 sat-around tables. The hall’s blank canvas allows couples to bring their colour scheme and theme to life.

The property has everything needed to create memorable receptions, including a state-of-the-art sound system, fully adjustable LED lighting, a large stage with lighting and curtains, a sprung dancefloor, a commercial kitchen and a dry hire.

The team prides itself on customer care; they liaise with couples and suppliers to help ensure events run smoothly.

OH-SO ELEGANT

28
Chloe and Tom’s classic wedding featured a burgundy and blush colour scheme Images courtesy of Chris Douglas Photography

Chloe

and Tom first met while working for an accountancy firm back in 2014. The pair became friends after meeting and went on a group holiday two years later to the Amalfi Coast, where they confessed their love for the first time.

Tom proposed in November 2020 after a year of not so subtle hinting by Chloe, who had been sending ring pictures and outright asking when he was going to propose.

During the second Covid 19 lockdown; the pair started the day by going for a walk in their local park and spent the afternoon playing the latest version of their favourite board game that had just been released. During that game, called Pandemic Legacy, players must open boxes at various points throughout the game. Tom had hidden the ring inside one of those boxes. She says, “The most special thing about our proposal is that we were at home on a cosy Sunday evening where I was wearing pyjamas and slippers. Although I was hopeful a proposal was coming soon, it wasn’t expected that day!”

SETTING THE SCENE

When planning the big day, the couple’s goal was to have a classic and elegant wedding that reflected their personalities. They always knew they wanted to incorporate their love of board games into the day. So, the pair not only had some available for guests to play, but featured games in the table names and centrepieces too. To highlight their shared love for Harry Potter, movie quotes were incorporated into the registrar’s ceremony script.

To ensure a stress-free day, Chloe and Tom wanted to find a venue that could host the whole wedding from start to finish. They fell in love with St Michael’s Manor Hotel as the property ticked all their boxes; it was close to home and was somewhere the pair could visit after the special day. They could also hire the hotel exclusively, so loved ones could stay the night of the wedding or the whole weekend for the ultimate celebration.

To make the day extra special, the couple decided to write their own vows for their ceremony. Chloe repeated the exact words she shared the first time she confessed her love to Tom in Italy and highlights of the trip that attracted her most to him – this included his sense of adventure and the ability to keep a calm head. Tom’s speech ended with a toast of Limoncello to celebrate the night of drinking too much in Italy, which resulted in Tom and Chloe starting a relationship.

After the drinks reception, guests tucked into a four-course Italianinspired menu. St Michael’s Manor suggested Peddling Pizza to keep guests from going hungry in the evening. The local pizza van is a favourite at the St Albans Market and has won an award in the 2022 British Street Food Awards.

Heaven is a Cupcake created a delicious three-tiered cake, which included chocolate and raspberry, lemon drizzle and apple strudel flavours – yum! The bake featured vanilla buttercream frosting, gold leaf and fresh flowers from the florist. There were also some cupcakes suitable for vegans.

Another sweet treat loved ones enjoyed was iced lemon biscuit favours, with guests' names stamped into the icing.

A mix of burgundy, blush and green blooms were selected for the flowers. The bride wanted a wide and loose bouquet to contrast her simple and fitted dress, which Vicki’s Floral Designs perfectly delivered. The supplier also created a long and low floral arrangement for the registrar’s table, which was then placed on the top table for the reception.

One of the bride’s favourite elements of the day was the memory table with photos of the pair’s grandparents, who unfortunately aren’t here anymore. They also had pictures from their parents and grandparents' weddings.

REAL WEDDINGS 29

LOOKING THE PART

Chloe looked stunning in an elegant mermaid-style gown, which featured a small train and a Bardot sweetheart neckline. When it came to finding the gown, the bride found a Gino Cerruti gown at What Alice Wore Bridal in St Albans. To make the dress perfect, she added false buttons down the back of the dress and accessorised her look with a fingertip-length veil.

Chloe bought an evening dress to wear in the evening the week before the wedding, which was full lengthed and covered in sparkles. The bride says, “It felt brilliant to change out of my wedding dress into something more comfortable and easier to dance in – plus, who doesn’t love sparkles?” Thanks to the help of her hair and make-up artist, Sarah Catherall, the bride felt like the best version of herself.

Tom looked dapper in a tailor made tweed three-piece suit with burgundy accessories. He had the wedding date and our initials embroidered into the suit lining. The groomsmen hired the same suits to match the groom.

The bride had four bridesmaids, two in blush dresses and the other two in burgundy ones. Chloe says, “One of my bridesmaids had a beautiful baby boy five weeks before my wedding, so I wanted to make sure her dress made her feel comfortable so soon after giving birth. Another of my best girls is a Muslim, so we needed to find a full-length dress with long sleeves and something appropriate to wear with her headscarf.”

The flowergirl wore a beautiful dress and felt like a princess on the day – she was the only person the bride didn’t mind upstaging her on the wedding day!

TIME TO CELEBRATE

A string trio played throughout the ceremony and during the drinks reception to add to the romantic atmosphere. The couple also had garden games and a board game table to keep guests entertained.

A huge hit in the evening was a band called Ear Candy Oxford, who played three sets broken up with a DJ in between. People were on the dancefloor all evening!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The day went by so quickly for Chloe and Tom – they wish they could do it all again. The bride says, “We both had the biggest smile on our faces for the whole day! It felt amazing to have all our friends and family in one place; we’ve both said we felt like celebrities as there was always someone who wanted to talk to us or take a photo.” She adds, “We made sure that we found each other at various points throughout the day and evening so we could enjoy the day together.”

The ceremony was a part of the day that stood out to them both as it was so personal with their vows and readings from loved ones. They also loved all the speeches on the day, which made them laugh, cry and grimace.

A funny moment was when Tom was so excited after being declared husband and wife that he tried to walk down the aisle before the ceremony was over! It was only after Chloe held him back and reminded him that they needed to sign the register that he remembered it wasn’t time for champagne yet!

All the suppliers involved in the wedding help the pair create the perfect day. Jess, the events manager at St Michael’s Manor, went above and beyond to make the day perfect. Chloe says, “The whole team changed a few months before our wedding, but Jess listened and understood all the personal touches we planned for our day. She coordinated with all our other suppliers to ensure it all came together perfectly, and there wasn’t a single question or thing to worry about.”

The perfect day

Alex

After meeting through a mutual friend, Alex and Jojo hit it off straight away with plenty of laughter. After spending more time together, the pair slowly fell in love.

Alex proposed on a boulder perched between two rocks 1,000 meters in the air at Kjeragbolten in Norway; Jojo realised what was happening once they got to the top and, of course, said ‘yes’!

The pair set the wedding for 25th June 2022 and created a beautiful day with family and friends.

and Jojo had a memorable wedding surrounded by loved ones Images courtesy of Purple Kite Photography
REAL WEDDINGS 35

Our number one goal was to have a big party and focus on what we wanted, not what anyone else expected.

We felt stressed about having a table plan as we both have divorced parents, so we opted for a relaxed hog roast and allowed guests to pick their seat.

We picked Henry Moore Studios & Gardens for our ceremony and The White Horse in Hertford for our reception. Both are beautiful properties that feel unique and not traditional wedding venues.

I wanted dried flowers as this felt like a more sustainable option, and I could keep the bloom after the wedding.

The Vintage Transport Guy drove us on the day in a VW Campervan, which was something I had always dreamt about.

I wore a second-hand skirt and top from a preloved bridal boutique. When looking for a dress, comfort was my only request and I wanted something simple that I could accessorise.

36

We had a traditional Norwegian celebration cake as a nod to Alex’s heritage.

My necklace was made from my grandma’s old rings that were melted to create three hearts for myself, my sister and my daughter – we all wore them on the wedding day.

Alex wore a traditional tweed suit paired with chinos.

I wanted my bridesmaid to pick her dress and gave her simple guidance for the colours – the only rule was to pick something she felt good in.

My daughter wore a traditional flowergirl dress, and we all wore matching flower crowns.

REAL WEDDINGS 37
The groomsmen wore a simple sage green suit and our son wore a waistcoat to match Alex.

An amazing band performed in the evening, which had everyone dancing.

We asked our friend, whom we met through, to do a reading during the ceremony. We did not hear it until the day, and it was a hilarious limerick about the two of us meeting!

We were both so happy on the day and had so much fun!

All our suppliers made our day special. Extra big credit to the teams at The White Horse and The Vintage Transport Guy, they went above and beyond for us.

For our honeymoon, we went to Gozo in Malta for four nights and had a fantastic time.

Love you always

After creating unforgettable memories together, Ollie proposed to Jennifer during their first holiday in Morocco. She says, “We were going out one evening to a restaurant on the beachfront and Ollie was trying to rush me to get ready, which I found a bit odd, but it turns out he wanted to pop the question during the sun set. When the staff saw him propose; they showered us in petals and flowers – it was a magical night.” The couple set a date for Saturday 27th August 2022, and created a personal wedding that represented them both. Here Jennifer shares details about their special day…

Jennifer and Ollie had a beautiful wedding at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel Images courtesy of Expression Photography
41 REAL WEDDINGS

Ollie first stayed at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel for work and messaged to say we should consider it as a wedding venue. We fell in love with everything about the hotel, from the impressive grounds to the traditional feel of the building and the service offered. We tied the knot in the Poles Hall, which had a traditional style and a magical atmosphere.

I wanted our flowers to feature blue hydrangeas and left the rest to our florist’s creative imagination. Gina was great at sending names and images of flowers to help us decide!

My fantastic friend designed the stationery using a blue and gold colour scheme and flowers.

We liked the idea of using the word love in different languages for our table names, which worked perfectly as we had guests from various nationalities on the day.

Ollie works in molecular biology and had a selection of cuddly microbes when studying, so guests received cuddly keyrings for favours. We also have them Covid-19 antigens as he helped set up a Covid 19 testing centre and his company helped manufacture components of the tests.

We gave our guests pin badges to support charities conducting research into illnesses that have affected our families; these include Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK and Alzheimer’s Society.

Our cake was a true masterpiece from the incredible baker Claire from At Your Wish Cakes. The bake consisted of two dummy tiers and three made from cake with lemon, banana and salted caramel and chocolate fudge for the flavours.

We wanted guests to have plenty of options for the wedding breakfast. So we picked a chicken and leek terrine starter, followed by a barbeque board for the main followed by an amazing salted caramel cheesecake. Hanbury Manor was great at catering for all dietary requirements with good-quality alternatives.

We had a DJ to finish the night off, which was a great hit with loved ones.

Ollie wore a three-piece grey suit, while the groomsmen wore a slightly different shade to allow him to stand out.

For the evening reception we had light-up love letters, a balloon garland, an LED light-up dancefloor, a photo booth with props, a gin bar and a doughnut wall.

I wore a strapless princess-style dress with layers of satin and tulle from the Sweetheart Collection by Justin Alexander. The bodice was ruched at the top, while the waist had diamantes and pearls all the way around.

43 REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids are scattered around the country; so it was great that they could get together to try dresses on. We opted for royal blue gowns, and I bought them matching silver jewellery.

It was an incredible day, and I don’t think I stopped smiling at any point! Seeing Ollie’s face as I walked down the aisle was a moment that stood out to me.

A local band performed an acoustic set during the drinks reception, and a full band set in the evening. They played a great variety of music and had all our guests dancing – even my dad, who I’ve only seen once or twice dance!

Having our loved ones in one place and all enjoying themselves was really special as it’s not very often we get to see them all together.

All the speeches were amazing; it was nice to hear how proud my dad is of us.

The majority of our suppliers went above and beyond, particularly our videographer who arrived at 8.30 am and was still with us well past 11 pm.

Capturing memories

Discover the talented teams behind the photographs

Aprofessional photographer is an expert in capturing all those special moments throughout the day, some of which you might have missed. You’ll want to look back on the images with pride and treasure them for years to come, so it’s essential to find a supplier you trust to showcase your day in the best possible way. Do your homework and research different photography styles until you find one you love. View websites and social media pages to see photographers' work and read reviews from newlyweds. To ensure the supplier is the perfect fit, schedule a face-to-face meeting or a video call to discuss your day and ensure everyone is on the same page. Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions; a good supplier will take the time to answer any concerns and offer advice. This is also the perfect opportunity to ensure your personalities don’t clash as you’ll be spending most of the day with your photographer.

To help with your search, check out these talented photographers from around the counties and what they offer nearlyweds.

HOWARD TREEBY, OWNER AT ABSOLUTEPHOTOUK

When did the company start?

I had a passion already for photography and, in particular, capturing people. After seeing some fantastic photographers posting photos online and on social media of weddings, I decided to give it a try! I’m glad I jumped in and just went for it, as I’ve now been capturing weddings for six years.

What packages do you offer nearlyweds?

I have three different packages to suit all budgets and requirements; this includes a half-day session for important moments, a full-day service with a photo book and an extended day option with an engagement shoot, second shooter and prints. All these options come with a USB backup and speedy customer service!

How would you explain your photography style?

On the day, I like to be aware of the surroundings while reading the crowd – nobody wants a pushy photographer. I know when to blend into the background, the best time to step up and make decisions and how to get the key moments covered. I have a light and airy photography style and emulate the filmic look with my editing.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I enjoy meeting new people and love the fact every wedding has a different feel with many characters you meet on the day. My job is more than just pressing a button; it’s everything from organising, planning and getting people confident in front of the lens. It’s a very social job, so I need to interact with guests or otherwise, it will be a very long day!

ROBBINS AT ROSE RAE PHOTOGRAPHY

How long have you been photographing weddings?

Officially I have been photographing weddings for 18 months. However, I’ve been in the industry for years as a wedding waitress and working for an events company. I have always loved photography and started my company after the stars aligned in 2021.

Having worked in some fairly high-pressured and toxic work environments, it’s such a breath of fresh air to work in this industry where I can truly be me and show my passion for my work. I’m so grateful for those couples who put their trust in me to do this fantastic thing that I get to call my job.

What packages do you offer nearlyweds?

My wedding package is roughly eight hours long, from prep to the first dance/cake cutting if those traditions are included. I offer a pre-shoot to get to know couples and get them comfortable in front of the camera. I deliver my images to a private gallery, and there are options to purchase prints plus bespoke albums straight from the gallery. I can do shorter bespoke packages upon request.

How would you explain your photography style?

With muted-champagne tones, I take a relaxed and documentary approach to capture events. I ensure I’m detail orientated enough to deliver romantic, dramatic, cinematic and dreamy images.

What is your favourite part of the job?

It’s so amazing to be surrounded by so much love at weddings. I enjoy getting stuck in with prep when I arrive to capture the big and small moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. It’s an honour that people trust me to capture special moments and feelings that can transport you back to those butterflies on the day.

Check out: www.roseraephotography.com

How long have you been photographing weddings?

I have been photographing weddings for nearly seven years, shooting my first wedding aged 17. It was an accident when I started the company. I got a part-time job in a photography studio and had no idea how much I would love it. After shooting my first wedding, I knew I had to do this for the rest of my life. I started my company the year I went to university, where I gained a first-class degree in photography.

What packages do you offer nearlyweds?

Each package contains a free slideshow of the highlights playing to the music from your wedding. My packages are very flexible but range from photographing the ceremony with group and couple portraits outside of the same venue to all-day coverage starting at bridal preparations and ending after the reception is in full swing. Engagement shoots can also be added to any package.

How would you explain your photography style?

I focus on capturing the atmosphere at each wedding, taking pictures that ooze happiness. Group and couple portraits are essential, but I love taking candid documentary-style photos without people noticing I’m there to capture the most natural moments.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Witnessing the love and joy from so many different people throughout a wedding day is the best part, including proud parents, the excited wedding party and the loved-up couple. I feel fortunate that I get to photograph amazing weddings, something I will never take for granted.

ERIC AND NATASHA

Eric and Natasha created a modern take on the traditional theme for their wedding day. When it came to picking the perfect setting for their special day, the groom had one request – for the venue to be close to an airfield. The pair has been to Shuttleworth House on a few occasions to watch various air shows, and book the property after discovering they host weddings.

DAVID AND MARIE-ANTHEA

After postponing the day twice, David and Marie-Anthea were so relieved to finally get married after worrying that the day might not go ahead. A part that stood out the most to David was walking down the aisle with their daughter Emilia and seeing his bride-to-be make her grand entrance.

JAMES AND TINA

South Farm was the perfect location for James and Tina’s wedding. The pair had originally planned to get married in March 2021, but had to postpone their day due to Covid 19. So it was important to create a day where loved ones had the chance to let their hair down and enjoy themselves.

We look back on some of our favourite showstopping weddings from the last few issues
LUKE AND KIRSTY Luke and Kirsty’s beautiful wedding featured a beautiful colour scheme and plenty of showstopping touches After getting engaged, the couple's number one goal was to enjoy every second of the planning process and to have a stress-free wedding. By working as a team, they created the most perfect day surrounded by loved ones. CATHRYN AND JONATHAN Cathryn and Jonathan tied the knot at Fanhalls Hall in Ware. From the time of booking to the actual wedding, the couple had five weeks to plan their big day and opted for a simple and classic style with stunning blooms, great entertainment and a elegant cake. dancing,

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Founded by MUA Karla Powell, Karla Cosmetics creates handmade, on trend, colour-shifting eyeshadows and has recently launched its Romance Quad Palette – get ready to fall in love! Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. It conceals without drying out the skin, and with continued use can even benefit the complexion since alpha-bisabolol of natural origin is soothing. This is a must-have if you’re striving for that flawless bridal look. £46, www.sisley-paris.com

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

Q&A Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

BRIDAL BEAUTY

When should I start thinking about booking my make-up artist, and do you have any tips for finding one that’s a perfect fit?

As soon as you confirm the wedding date with your venue, start looking for a make-up artist. I recommend booking a supplier as soon as you find the perfect company for your day, as we get booked up in advance.

Searching for a make-up artist may be tricky as so many amazing companies exist. So it’s essential to find what style you’re after, this could be natural, glowing, matte or glam make-up – this will cut your options down as most businesses specialise in certain looks. Find keywords that best match your style and search for local companies so you don’t have to pay so much in travel fees. If you find pictures of styles you love, check to see who created the looks.

Keep in mind that you’ll spend all morning with this supplier. So, have a phone or zoom call and plan a make-up trial to meet the supplier before the wedding. If you get a good vibe and the make-up is what you’ve asked for, it’s a win-win situation!

WINTER WINDS

I want to look beautiful on my wedding day, but I’m struggling with dry skin this winter. What advice can you share with me?

If you’re struggling with dry skin during the winter months and notice your skin flaking or your make-up is separating throughout the day, try not to over-cleanse or exfoliate too much. Naturally, we think we need to exfoliate more to remove all the dry skin cells, but this creates the opposite effect as our skin becomes drier.

Prep for the foundation is everything. Use a rich moisturiser such as Charlotte’s Magic Cream by Charlotte Tilbury before applying foundation to keep the skin hydrated. Use a wet beauty blender to press in the liquid products rather than a brush. Keep away from matte foundations, which could cling to dry areas. Instead, use a light dewy option and try to keep to cream products rather than powder.

Use a setting spray like Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray throughout the day to refresh your look and hydrate the skin.

Lastly, remember not to start a new skincare routine too close to your big day.

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

TIS THE SEASON

We’re having a winter wedding and want to incorporate this theme into our flowers. Do you have any suggestions? People always ask how to add warmth to their winter wedding. We can all see with our own eyes the rich colour palette that nature has to offer as we turn into the autumnal months. Then as winter approaches, vibrant reds and silver foliage play a vital role.

Be cautious when adding darker colours to your winter colour scheme. You only need to add one primary accent colour to create warmth and depth to your special day – adding more than one might cause the colours to clash.

If you take a traditional neutral wedding palette and add one feature flower in a dark red shade with a touch of silver foliage, you’ll instantly have a warm winter look with classical wedding flowers.

You don’t need to throw all contemporary wedding ideas out of the window when planning a winter wedding. Take traditional shades and make minor adjustments to create a different effect for the winter time.

Colours that trick the mind into thinking they’re warm always work better for the colder months, including red, burgundy, deep orange and yellow. Avoid shades that create a colder environment such as pale blue, royal blue and too much white or silver.

FESTIVE BAKES

We’re having a winter wedding and would love to incorporate the season into our cake; how can we achieve this?

I have three ways to incorporate the winter season into wedding cakes. The first and obvious option is to incorporate winter foliage, pine cones, berries and pine sprigs. Pair the greenery with hessian ribbons and textured buttercream for a rustic look.

Alternatively, rich deep colours like forest green or burgundy paired with cream, white and gold touches create a timeless look. The above cake has a single white sugar paste rose with wafer paper leaves dusted with gold for a bit of sparkle and a square shape for a modern twist.

My favourite thing about Christmas are the lights, so why not add some fairylights to the cake? You can incorporate this in the cake’s decorations or even between the tiers. I’ve created a bake with the lights intertwined with the fondant and wafer paper lace for a whimsical look.

EXPERT ADVICE 73

WALKING IN THE WINTER WONDERLAND

What advice can you share when it comes to planning a winter wedding?

Compared to other times of the year, you need to have plans in place that account for the weather when it comes to winter weddings. We hate thinking of things that could go wrong, but not preparing and knowing your options could leave you scratching your head and panicking about what to do. Take some time to think about how the weather might affect your day and have a conversation with the wedding team at your venue about what plans they have in place, such as alternate locations for photos or extra heating.

Have someone with a coat to wrap you up between shots if you’re having outside photos as adrenaline will keep you warm for a certain amount of time, but it’s hard to smile when you’re shivering!

A TASTE OF CHRISTMAS

What flavours would you suggest for our Christmas-themed wedding cake?

Choosing your wedding cake and flavours is a big highlight of wedding planning – saying “I do” at Christmas makes it extra special.

Flavours are a personal choice and the foundation of your luxury centrepiece. So whatever your favourite flavours are, they’ll be well received by guests!  Christmas conjures images of sumptuous food, vibrant textures, bold flavours and colours – your wedding cake is no exception and should taste as good as it looks.

Traditionally, a boozy fruit cake is a Christmas staple and is often chosen as a wedding cake flavour. However, you might consider alternative rich flavours, including Belgian chocolate fudge with salted caramel buttercream, spiced carrot, pear and hazelnut with salted caramel buttercream or even coffee and walnut! Are you enjoying a rich and delicious wedding breakfast? Why not opt for lighter flavour combinations, including classic vanilla paired with raspberry conserve, lemon and blueberry or almond with wild cherry compote?  Book a cake-tasting session with your baker and enjoy sampling delicious flavours while discussing your wedding menu and ideas. Together you can personalise flavour preferences for your perfect wedding cake!

THE DREAM TEAM

We’ve just started planning our wedding; what advice can you share for finding suppliers?

Planning your big day is an exciting time, but it can also be quite daunting as there are many things to consider.

Once you’ve found a venue, picked a theme and found the perfect colour palette, it’s time to pull other elements together. There is a wealth of wedding publications both in print and online that will inspire you. Make a list or create a mood board with ideas and photos of things you like, which can be shared with suppliers. Many companies offer an array of services, and you may be surprised by the amount of businesses that are local to you or the venue – booking them will help keep your travel costs down.

You’ll want to be confident that your day will be everything you’ve envisioned. While email and online chats are great, you won’t be able to convey your vision to suppliers easily. Arrange to meet with the teams, preferably at your chosen venue, to discuss all the details. Here you can share your mood board, build a relationship with the supplier and provide details for any other businesses they may need to coordinate with on the day, such as event planners and caterers.

FINDING THE ONE

Top tips and advice when it comes to dress shopping

TIME TO RESEARCH

We know how stressful finding your dream gown can be, so it’s important to look online for inspiration on what type of features you like or dislike – Pinterest will be your best friend. Many brides go into their appointment with a dress in mind but come out with something completely different, so be open minded and try on a few different styles to see what suits your body shape and personal style best.

THE ENTOURAGE

STAY BUDGET FRIENDLY

Be open and honest with your stylist, who will help you select a beautiful dress that fits your price range. The worst thing you could do is fall in love with a gown only to find out that it’s well over your budget –don’t torture yourself if you can’t afford it. You will also need to remember to save some money for the accessories and alterations.

BE PREPARED

It’s essential to wear neutral underwear when trying gowns on, including a strapless bra –avoid bright or bold patterns at all costs! If you’re planning to wear shapewear on the day, bring this along to get the full effect. Also, wear heels that are similar to those you’ll be wearing on the day to see if any alterations will be needed.

FINDING THE ONE

Search online for local companies or ask for referrals from loved ones when looking for boutiques to visit. Check out the suppliers’ websites and social media pages to ensure the stores stock styles or designers you like. Read reviews to find out what other brides thought of the team and the service offered throughout the whole experience.

SEASONAL SPLENDOUR

It can be tricky deciding who to bring along to your bridal appointment but avoid bringing a whole crowd as everyone will have different opinions and it can become overwhelming very quickly. We suggest inviting only a select few most important to you, such as your mum, grandmother, siblings or closest friends. Make sure to call ahead to check how many people the boutique allows.

Remember the time of year for your wedding when shopping for a gown. Think breathable fabrics in summer like chiffon, crepe, and tulle while avoiding long sleeves as you don’t want to be too hot on the day. For the colder months, Mikado, brocade and velvet are perfect materials. Be prepared and accessorise the gown with a bridal wrap or jacket for outdoor pictures.

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

Feather-trim dress, £45, www.dcey.co.uk

Bridal sandals, from a selection, www.davidsbridal.co.uk

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

86

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

Burnt-orange satin dress, £160, https://wearerewritten.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

94

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

96
Beth Morton and her hubby visited The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
