ECO-JEWELLERY

British casting specialist and fine jewellery manufacturer, Hockley Mint has announced plans to overhaul its plain wedding ring collection by offering recycled precious metals as standard. Sourced from within the UK, the various alloys of gold, silver and platinum represent another step in the business’ sustainable sourcing strategy. This will be offered alongside the company’s long-standing fairtrade gold option for wedding rings and fine jewellery.

Kevan Jenkinson, the sales director at Hockley Mint, says: “This is another step towards operating more sustainably. We are sourcing our recycled precious metals from within the United Kingdom as part of our ‘Created in the UK’ ethos. So far, we have had positive feedback from our long-standing wedding ring customers, and I hope more retail jewellers will see this as an opportunity to create a point of difference in their bridal offering.”

Future plans to improve sustainability include the installation of solar panels and roof insulation at Hockley Mint’s workshop to help reduce its carbon footprint and use of renewable energies.

Laetitia Rattu and Balram Kandola revisited Coombe Abbey Hotel in Brinklow to launch the hotel’s new 2023 premium wedding packages. The hotel stepped in to help the Birmingham-based couple, who were left devastated after their original venue went into administration and they faced the prospect of no reception venue just weeks before their wedding day. As newlyweds, they were delighted to return and be the face of the fourstar historic hotel’s two new wedding packages, which will run until 2024.

The ‘Anything For You is Possible’ luxury package includes a pre-wedding complimentary afternoon tea for two, reception drinks, a toastmaster and wedding co-ordinator, as well as a four-course wedding breakfast and an evening reception. This package also features group activities, including lawn games and a grand bedroom for the happy couple to use on the day.

The second package covers the exclusive hire of the hotel’s signature marquee for up to 500 guests all year round – the perfect setting for a wedding breakfast or evening reception. Features include a grand feature room for the wedding night, a lounge area, dancefloor, use of the terrace, kitchen facilities and bar, decorative lighting, tables, Chiavari chairs and much more.

KARMA SALFORD HALL, WR11 8UT 01386 871 300 | www.karmagroup.com

Karma Salford Hall is a beautiful Grade I listed manor house that has retained its Tudor charm with stained-glass windows, a bell tower and historic engraving into Cotswold stone. Set in manicured gardens and nestled amid rolling hills and farmland, the property has a quintessentially English feel with new and period furnishings creating a traditional yet contemporary setting. Once the guest home for the monks of Evesham Abbey and later owned by King Henry VIII, the building is steeped in history and old-world charm with grand fireplaces, wood panelling and oil paintings.

It later turned up, being offered at auction. The owners of the hall at that time bought it back and returned it to the tower, where it remains today.

IN TIME A step back

After a busy few months, I was desperate for a getaway and didn’t hesitate when the opportunity arose to visit Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa – a hotel that provides the perfect setting for relaxing getaways, weddings and mini-moons. On one sunny afternoon, my mum and I set off to discover what the popular venue had to offer – spoiler alert, we were not disappointed.

THE PERFECT SETTING

Situated just outside the Medieval town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the manor is surrounded by scenic countryside and is ideally located with easy access to the M40.

Upon arriving at the 16th-century hotel and descending the long driveway, we were blown away by the charming grounds and grand exterior.

After an extensive refurbishment, the 125-year-old hotel has undergone a stunning transformation. The newly-refurbished spaces have been lovingly decorated using a blend of traditional and modern designs. There are plenty of quirky features, beautiful fireplaces and nods to William Shakespeare himself. The famous writer visited the property and is rumoured to have written one of his famous plays there, which is where the As You Like It Lounge got its name. With books ‘floating’ in the beautiful bookshelf, this inspirational space provided a quiet location to relax with a book and play some games. We spent a lot of time here playing with the property’s Alice in Wonderland chess set.

REST YOUR HEAD

With 71 on-site bedrooms to choose from, we were lucky enough to stay in the Manor House Deluxe Room. Featuring a cosy design and luxury furnishings, what place could be better to unwind from everyday life?

Our room had everything we needed and more, from a mini-fridge and coffee table to reading chairs, a desk with a vanity mirror and a beautifully-designed bathroom. If you’re anything like me, then you’ll also love the double wardrobe!

The super-king-sized bed provided pure comfort thanks to the duckdown duvet and Hypnos Lansdowne cashmere mattress. Each morning, I awoke feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

I loved the rain-fall shower in the bathroom and the Essential Savon products provided, which included shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. A lovely touch was the cotton waffle bathrobes.

Our room had a stunning view over the Victorian Topiary Garden, which were planted more than 125 years ago and were inspired by

TO DINE FOR

We had a fantastic meal at The Stuart Restaurant, which featured stunning décor, artwork, high ceilings, warm lighting and open fires – perfect for a romantic dinner.

The talented chef creates delicious dishes using some of the best local produce. I started with the carrot and coriander soup, followed by a roasted breast of chicken with truffle mash, and everything was cooked to perfection! My mum loved the risotto and still talks about it to this day. The dinner service was impeccable, with friendly and attentive staff who ensured we had the best experience possible.

The restaurant was also where breakfast was served, my favourite meal of the day! With a selection of fruit, cereal and pastries accompanied by fresh juices to pick from, as well as cooked food – guests won’t go hungry!

TIME TO RELAX

What better location to relax than the newly-refurbished spa? With an impressive list of treatments available, including facials, massages, scrubs and body treatments, guests are sure to feel refreshed and rejuvenated. The property offers several spa days, perfect for couples looking for a relaxing break away from wedding planning.

Upon entering the relaxing foyer area, I was welcomed by an expert beauty therapist who went through my problem areas to create a personalised facial just for me. The facial lasted 25 minutes and included a mixture of cleansing, refreshing and hydrating products from ESPA. The background music, dimmed lighting and aroma of essential oils added to the calming atmosphere, and I entered a world of pure relaxation –especially during the head massage.

After the session ended, I noticed the results instantly! My skin looked more radiant, my dry patches had improved significantly, and I had fewer blackheads – something I struggle with.

During our stay we went swimming each morning and used the steam room and sauna. The comfortable loungers beside the pool offered the perfect space to relax with a good-old book.

Make sure you check out some of the venue’s indoor and outdoor activities, including meditation and yoga in the gardens or the yoga hut to calm the body and mind. Exercise enthusiasts won’t be disappointed by the homely and intimate gym that’s fully air-conditioned.

EXCHANGING VOWS

Billesley Manor Hotel & Spa is not only the perfect getaway, but it also offers a stunning backdrop for quintessentially English weddings. Couples can hire the manor exclusively and will receive assistance from the venue’s wedding specialists to help create the perfect day.

Say “I do” in The Stuart Room, which features traditional oak panelling, stunning chandeliers, a charming atmosphere and period features. For intimate celebrations, The Drawing Room, with stunning views over the gardens, is perfect. Alternatively, why not choose the Topiary Garden Suite, which has been designed to match any colour scheme? This bright and airy suite opens into the gardens to create the perfect space for drink receptions.

The venue’s bi-annual wedding fairs are the perfect opportunity to meet talented companies, ask any questions you may have and receive plenty of valuable advice.

Dance the night away

Abby and Connor tied the knot at The Old Rectory with a festival theme Images courtesy of P & S Photography Ltd

Abby and Connor met while working in the same restaurant. “He asked me how to cut an avocado,” laughs Abby. “I helped him make guacamole and we laughed and haven’t stopped since! It was a really easy and natural connection, and we got on straight away. Connor proposed in our first home that we bought together when we were 18. He rang me while I was on my way home from work, and I could tell that he was excited about something. He scattered rose petals up two flights of stairs, and on each step was a sticky note with something he loved about me written on it. I followed the stairs to the top, opened the door and he was down on one knee with my dream ring.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 29

The Old Rectory had beautiful grounds and was exactly what we wanted for our big day. Selena, our wedding coordinator, was extremely open-minded when helping us create our vision. We wanted a relaxed and fun vibe, so we decided to go for a festival theme with hay bales, blankets, festival flags and signposts.

For

We chose wildflowers for our flowers and centrepieces. I, unfortunately, lost my grandad, who was a very big presence in my life, so we requested yellow roses to be included as it was his favourite flower. Although it was only a small detail, each time I see my flowers in the photos they stand out to me. We also requested for Anne Whysall Florists to add rosemary sprigs for Connor’s nan, who we also sadly lost.

In the evening, we had a fish and chips van for our guests to enjoy. We also had a candy floss and ice cream bike from Dan & Wills, which was a fun detail that everyone loved!

I’ve always made them for parties, and they’re loved and hated by many, so it felt like a personal touch. We also had a sign that said: tied the knot so take a shot’.

I wore a beautiful gown from Shropshire Country Brides. I had no idea what type of dress I wanted, but it was the first one I picked, and I instantly knew that it was the one.

I felt surprisingly relaxed on the day. I think the morning prosecco may have helped! Connor was busy setting up with the groomsmen, so I don’t think he had time to feel excited or nervous, although he did have time for a quick pint!

The bridesmaids chose dark green multiway dresses. I loved that they matched but could be worn differently. I also told the girls to choose whatever hairstyle they wanted but to incorporate gypsophila into it.

Connor picked a plain suit with a cream tie, which had sunflowers on and a hint of the same green that the bridesmaids wore.

To keep everyone entertained, we hired The Vertigo Band. We also had garden games dotted around, including croquet, table tennis and Jenga.

For me, walking down the aisle was the most memorable moment. It was a feeling unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and I felt elated, emotional, excited, and nervous! Walking out once we were married felt like all the pieces had finally fallen into place and like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. After months of stress and planning, it was all worth it.

Shannon and Tris celebrated their big at Henley Hall surrounded by their friends and family Images courtesy of Humblebee Photography

Shannon

and Tris met in 2017 while working as lifeguards. “I was working to help fund my master’s degree, and Tris was learning to become a personal trainer before he headed off to university,” says Shannon. “I was attracted to Tris because he was quieter than the other guys I knew, and he was thoughtful and such a gentleman. We worked a lot of evening shifts together, which involved cleaning the leisure centre at the end of the day. He didn’t shy away from the dirty work, and he always put others first.”

After carrying the ring around for two years, Tris proposed on New Year’s Day in 2021. “We had spent New Year’s Eve as just the two of us,” shares the bride. “I was feeling quite down as my family have a tradition of writing secret wishes for each other and ourselves, and we read these out from the previous year to see if they had come true. I knew that my wish hadn’t come true, so I asked my mum and sisters not to open my letter and instead to put it into the fire. Tris and I played games all evening, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of disappointment. After returning from the bathroom after getting ready for bed, I walked into the bedroom, and Tris was down on one knee asking: ‘is this what you wished for?’ It turns out that wishes really do come true!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“We are both lovers of the great outdoors, and it was our dream to get married outside and have a country wedding,” explains Shannon. “We chose Henley Hall for the ceremony as the gardens are beautiful and quintessentially British. The bridge over the River Ledwyche is incredibly romantic, and we knew as soon as we visited that we had found our dream venue. We hired some land in the quaint village of Ashford Carbonel, where I went to primary school, for our reception. We chose to hire tipis from Shire Tipis as they fitted our country vibe perfectly.

“I’m a keen environmentalist, so it was important for us to minimise the environmental impact and carbon footprint from our wedding and to support small local businesses where possible,” adds the bride. “All of the décor was handmade using reclaimed materials. I made 80 metres of bunting, which we hung outside Henley Hall and inside the tipis. I also made a floral chandelier, which hung from the centre of the tipi. My dad made the most wonderful sweet cart, which we now hire out under Shropshire Handmade Weddings for other weddings and events. My sister-in-law and her partner also helped us to make a giant cornhole on which she painted a beautiful leaping trout.”

The happy couple placed gin bottles filled with fairylights and vases made by Shannon’s dad on each table. “We picked the flowers for the tables from my mum and dad’s garden,” recalls Shannon. “My dad also hand-carved a tree of life inside a frame that we placed in the centre of our top table. It’s now sitting pride of place in our lounge. My parents grew a lot of the flowers for our wedding as we wanted to have English spring flowers that were grown locally. Kate, my mum’s very talented friend, also picked some of the flowers from her garden and bought a bucket to make my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ posies. She also picked some wildflowers from the hedgerow at my childhood home to place in my bouquet. It was such a kind gesture and a wonderful sentiment.”

For their favours, Shannon and Tris chose bride and groom-themed biscuits that were made by Shannon’s sister, Heulwen. Shannon’s mum also contributed by making the couple a three-tiered wedding cake. It was filled with fruit, carrot and chocolate and was beautifully decorated with fondant and delicate flowers.

“Tris and I absolutely love Spanish food and the culture,” reveals the bride. “We chose to serve patatas bravas and paella at our wedding breakfast. We also had canapés at the drinks reception following the ceremony. These were made by my mum, auntie and cousin. In the evening, we had an extravagant hog roast, which was loved by all.

“My lovely uncle Mike drove me to the ceremony and Tris and I to the reception venue in his car, which my mum had expertly decorated with ribbon and flowers,” adds the bride. “My mum and bridesmaids were driven to the wedding by my dad’s best friend. We couldn’t have picked more special chauffeurs!”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I wore a classic Romantica of Devon ballgown with a beautiful lace panel on the back,” remembers Shannon. “I bought it from the Wedding Quarter in Malvern, and my auntie altered it for me slightly, softening the neckline and sewing on a sparkly belt to add a bit of bling. I accessorised with an elegant pair of earrings, a matching necklace and bracelet and a large sparkly comb from Lace & Favour. During the day, I wore Rainbow Club shoes, before changing into slingbacks in the evening.”

Tris opted for a check three-piece suit with a tan waistcoat, gold tie and brown leather shoes. The groomsmen had navy black check waistcoats instead with rose gold ties.

“I chose my three best friends and beautiful sisters to be my bridesmaids,” says the bride. “They chose stunning rose gold maxi dresses with sequin bodices and open backs, which we purchased from Next. I gifted them rose gold drop earrings which perfectly complemented the gowns.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“In keeping with the Spanish theme, we had a classical Spanish guitarist play at our ceremony and during the drinks reception,” shares Shannon. “For our evening band, we chose indie-pop band Chelsea Daggers from Entertainment Nation Ltd, who were absolutely fantastic. We also kept guests entertained with garden games that my dad made, and finished off the celebrations with a sparkler archway.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“It was the happiest and most joyous day of our lives,” recalls the bride. “Neither of us could believe how quickly it went, and it was difficult to take it all in. My favourite parts were the ceremony and speeches. The service was romantic, especially since we wrote our own vows, which were so emotional.

“Our wedding day was made special by the incredible people we chose to share it with,” continues Shannon. “It was filled with so much love, all thanks to our amazing families and friends, including the wonderful Amy from Humblebee Photography and October of October Hair. Both ladies went above and beyond. In the morning, they felt like part of the bridal party and were such fun. Amy, of course, stayed with us for the rest of the day, capturing everything perfectly and mingling with our guests as if she’d always been a member of the family. She understood us so well as a couple, and we honestly couldn’t have chosen a better photographer. We have many of the photos framed around the house reminding us of the most perfect day of our lives!”

HONEYMOON

“We spent four nights in a beautiful shepherd’s hut just outside of Monmouth with our labrador, Thor,” reveals Shannon. “It was on the edge of a bluebell wood with a hot tub and log burner. It was exquisite! We walked, read books and played board games, and of course caught up on sleep! Months of wedding planning had really taken it out of us!”

How to organise your dream wedding

www.gingerjamphotography.com

HOW TO FIND A PHOTOGRAPHER

Choosing your wedding photographer can seem pretty daunting, however there are a number of things you can do to refine your search before you even begin.

Set a budget – decide on how important the images are to you. If the fairytale venue, perfect dress, delicious food and dream honeymoon are all higher priorities, then you may be left with a smaller figure to spend on your photography. Just remember, once you’ve invested in the areas that make your day special, the images that capture them will become pretty important.

Take time to talk to family and friends – do they have any recommendations or experiences to share? Recommendations from people you know are really important, so try and find out what makes those suppliers stand out.

Search social media – Instagram is usually the best platform, with most photographers having a strong portfolio on there. It’s easy to search with keywords and hashtags to find images you like. From there, it’s a case of selecting their profile, looking at their website and reaching out. Most properties get tagged in images, so visiting your chosen venue’s page and viewing images they’ve been tagged in will give you an idea of what photographers have worked there before.

Decide on your style – do you like natural/documentary style photos, where the day is captured as it happens with little posing or do you prefer contemporary images that look more editorial and can often be more dramatic?

Contact and talk with photographers – that’s right, plural. Don’t just talk to one, as every photographer offers something a little different, whether it’s their style or the packages that they offer. It’s important to compare what makes them stand out to you. Once you feel you are getting close to a decision, arrange a call or meeting to discuss your plans and ask as many questions as you need to decide if they are the right fit for you.

Meeting in person – once you feel you have found the right photographer for you, it’s a good idea to meet. Most offer an engagement session as part of a package or for an additional fee. This will give you the chance to spend some time with them and get a feel for how they work. In addition, you’ll get some great images which will help calm any nerves ahead of your wedding day!

FINDING AMAZING ENTERTAINMENT

When looking for a wedding DJ there are several things you need to keep in mind before making a decision:

Experience – anyone can turn up with a laptop and call themselves a DJ. There is no regulation, unfortunately, but a good DJ will know how to work the crowd and make changes and adapt when needed to keep the guests happy all night.

Reviews – there is nothing better than a customer taking the time to write an excellent review. Before booking, make sure you check out what previous couples thought of their services.

Equipment – presentation and attention to detail are so important. A variety of lighting effects should come as standard as well as a clear, crisp sound system. The more lighting options available, the better choices you have to create the perfect ambience.

Customer service – your supplier should take care of your needs and

respond as quickly as they can.

The wrong DJ can ruin your night, with people sitting for large parts of the night bored. Entertainment is one of the most important aspects of your day and many guests will be talking about it for years to come, so do your research!

Couples looking for entertainment for the ceremony and wedding breakfast should consider the piano. Before making a decision, it’s important to hear the performer live, so you can see first hand if they will be a good fit for your day. I try and arrange a coffee with my clients to talk in person about their song requests. I’m also happy to learn pieces and record clips for them before the big day.

CHOOSING A CELEBRANT

A celebrant will create a ceremony that is all about you. Their beliefs don’t come into it. It can be non-religious or you can add prayers or hymns. Pretty much anything goes! You’re free to choose where you have it and when you have it, so it could be on a boat in Crete or in a castle ruin in Wales.

Where do you find a celebrant? A quick google search will lead you to a variety of directories.

How do you know if they’re any good? Ask them if they are trained by a recognised body such as AMC, FOIC or Civil Ceremonies Ltd. Check out their reviews and take a look at their social media pages and website. How active are they? How much have they invested in their business? What information do they give? What experience do they have? How versatile are they? Do they have the right look?

What should I keep in mind? Always look for a celebrant who offers a no obligation discovery call. It’s important to find someone who speaks your language and makes you feel comfortable. Celebrants are

www.andrewab.wedding

as individual as you are, and they vary greatly in their style and manner. How much will a celebrant cost? Like anything in life, celebrant fees vary according to what is offered. Ask them how they work and what services they can provide. Some celebrants can tailor your ceremony according to your available budget and your personal requirements, so it’s always worth asking if they can be flexible.

Celebrant fees range from £250 to more than £1,000. Unless you find someone who is so perfect that you’re willing to pay any money to have them, then my advice would be to pitch it somewhere in the middle to find someone who is committed to providing high standards and is reliable.

Remember, the best part about having a celebrant is that it makes your wedding ceremony different and personal to you.

SEARCHING FOR YOUR DREAM DRESS

Even if you’ve been dreaming about your wedding since you were a child, finding your dream gown can still be nerve-racking. The choice is immense nowadays, and having a whole new language about dresses to learn can be a daunting prospect. Here is a concise list of top tips that, as a bridal consultant with more than 30 years of experience, I think will help you navigate this wonderful adventure:

Aim to shop for your gown around eight-12 months before your wedding, as this will give you time to place an order for a bespoke gown if you don’t want to buy an off-the-peg dress.

Do your homework! Find independent shops local to you and check their reviews. Look at the images on their website, and if necessary, call them and make sure they have the look and size you want.

Always make an appointment. Try to go on a weekday if you can, as Saturdays get very busy, which might make your time really limited!

Make enquiries about the cost of the dresses that you like, then you can decide what your budget needs to be in order to get the look that you want. If your budget is less than £1,000, you might need to look at outlet bridal stores.

Once you have made your appointment, think carefully about who

you want to take with you. Too many differing opinions can make it very confusing, so take a couple of people whose thoughts you value.

If you’re going to visit several shops, plan your travel route carefully. It would be ambitious to visit more than three shops in one day. To make your bridal shopping more efficient, visit your priority shops first.

Wear a nude or strapless bra on the appointment day, unless you are happy to remove it completely when you’re trying things on.

Keep an open mind about trying different styles, even if you think it couldn’t be the one

If you have any concerns, discuss them with your bridal consultant. They usually have many years of experience, so will be able to help you with any worries you might have.

Relax and stop shopping. Once you’ve made up your mind and said yes to the dress, stop looking at styles or new looks.

Whatever your personal style, size or your budget is, start your shopping early and keep an open mind and you will find your dream gown soon.

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

Bridal sandals, from a selection, www.davidsbridal.co.uk

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

50

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

Burnt-orange satin dress, £160, https://wearerewritten.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

THE ONE FOR ME

We want to personalise our big day. How can we do this?

Planning a wedding can be an exciting yet daunting experience, but as long as it’s physically possible, there’s nothing too off-limits. The first thing you should think about is the tone of the day. Do you want it to be relaxed and informal, or would you prefer it to be formal and fun? Once you have the atmosphere in your mind, you can then choose things that are relevant and make it perfect for you.

Songs are a great way to add a personal touch. This year we have had a couple walk down the aisle to the instrumental theme from Jurassic Park, as well as a new Mr and Mrs Jones walk out to Me and Mrs Jones. Couples love Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours when they are signing the register and another favourite is At Last by Etta James.

One of the things we’ve noticed, is that fruitcake has come back into fashion. There was a point where it disappeared altogether, and nobody did them at all, but it’s making a return. These can be decorated to fit your theme or colour scheme. Alternatively, if you choose not to have a cake at all, a cake made of cheese is a popular alternative.

THE LOOK OF LOVE

How can we ensure our photographer is the right fit for our nuptials?

Choosing your wedding photographer is a big deal, and making sure you have the right person is a must. They will be there with you right from prep through to the first dance and beyond, so it’s essential you feel relaxed and comfortable around them. Get to know your photographer and see if you click. Take them up on any meetings or virtual calls that they offer and book a pre-wedding shoot if possible. This is a great way to see how they work and prepare yourself for your big day, and feel more at ease in front of the camera.

Your photographer shoud be your extra bridesmaid, your wingman, and your timekeeper, they will be there to support you and advise you on anything you’re not sure of.

Have a clear idea of the style you want for your day. Most wedding photographers have their own look, so making sure they’re the right person for you is key. Some have a documentary look, and others are more traditional offering posed pictures.

www.humblebeephotography.co.uk

Don’t be afraid to ask to see a full gallery. Most photographers have example galleries that they can send to you so that you can get an idea of how your gallery may look.

Most photographers have their own editing style, some are light and airy, and others are darker and warmer. So bare this in mind when looking at their portfolio. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions!

www.humblebeephotography.co.uk EXPERT ADVICE 53

TREND SETTER

What trends will be popular in 2023?

Love stories and romantic literary greats will feature strongly in 2023 wedding trends. With the hotly-anticipated third series of Bridgerton in production, Regency period fascination will find its way subtly into weddings, with literary-inspired touches and splashes of Regency blue. Think of a quintessentially English cottage aesthetic, tradition, and regal elegance. Perfect for the traditionalists amongst us.

The cost of weddings rises year upon year, and more and more couples are finding savvy ways to save money. Whether it’s arranging their table décor, growing their own flowers or making their wedding cake, couples are looking for ways to utilise the talents within their wedding party to keep costs down as much as possible.

Sustainability is already a huge priority amongst many Brits, but in 2023, this is set to grow even further. Many couples will look to reduce the environmental impact of their wedding through eco-friendly suppliers and re-usable items. Stationery from environmentally-friendly suppliers and re-usable decorations and favours will play a big part, as weddings become a statement of how a couple wants to live in harmony with the environment.

On the other side of the scale, another trend we’re seeing is the more subtle, old English-style weddings. Think satin and plain outfits as well as black and white imagery.

HOLD ME CLOSE

My wife-to-be and I are both camera shy and are feeling anxious about having our photos taken on our wedding day, but also want a lovely album to look back on. Can you offer us some advice?

Allow me to let you in on a little secret, 95 per cent of couples that I have enjoyed photographing over the years also, initially, were just like you, so take comfort in the knowledge that you’re not alone with this concern. So, where do you start?

JUMP FOR MY LOVE

We’re thinking of hiring a bouncy castle for our wedding guests. What should we take into consideration before booking?

When booking an inflatable for your wedding there are a few things you should consider. The first thing your supplier should do is check what design you’d like for the big day. For example, we have two wedding castle available for different budgets and other inflatables which are more focused on entertainment rather than the eye-catching all-white design.

Is the inflatable going to be placed indoors or outdoors? If outdoors, the inflatable has to go on grass, so you should measure to make sure this would fit. If it’s going indoors, you will need to check that the ceiling height and floor space will be suitable.

The team at Liam’s Bouncy Castle Hire Telford www.liamsbouncycastles.co.uk

Choosing the right person to be your photographer is the first step towards overcoming your anxiety. Research reviews, how did the photographer you are considering make other couples feel?

www.pandsphotography.co.uk

Now that you’ve chosen the right person as your photographer, why not arrange a pre-wedding shoot? Get all those feelings out of the way so that you don’t have to deal with them on the most important day of your life. With the right person behind the camera, they will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and the experience fun.

Whether or not you have had a pre-shoot, remember that you chose the right person to begin with, and they’re going to give you the personal space to enjoy your day and make you feel comfortable throughout. The most anxious part for couples on their wedding day isn’t the morning preparations, the ceremony or even the formal family photos, it’s the dreaded, both of you on your own with your photographer. If you’re naturally touchy-feely, then hug and feel or if you’re naturally full of kisses and sweet words, then kiss and whisper. After that, let your photographer take you both for a little walk to some lovely spots and just see what happens along the way. The point is to forget about the camera and your photos, that’s your photographer’s job and don’t forget, you chose this person because you liked them and not just their photos.

Be inspired by this summer in Provence-themed shoot

Leanne from LB Photography and Louise A’Ness Makeup Artist teamed up to create this bridal shoot. “We know brides are looking for something a little bit different, so we wanted to create a French feel in the UK, and we found exactly that at the Warwickshire Lavender Farm,” says Leanne. “We decided on two different dresses. The first dress from Jo at Bridal Reloved in Coventry was an organza waterfall skirt and lace bodice by Martina Liana. With this dress, Caroline from Palm & Peony Flowers paired it up with a peach bouquet. The second dress was a fun, flirty tea-length dress by Sassi Holford with beautiful appliqué daisies and a detachable bolero jacket. Caroline created a second bunch of gorgeous flowers to match the dress. Louise, our amazing make-up artist, created a sun-kissed look on our beautiful model, Ioana. Laura from Elegance Bridal Hair Design chose a relaxed half up style with a beach wave and teased out the curls, so it flowed beautifully in the breeze. “We had all worked so hard to create this, so I wanted the images to be relaxed and fun,” adds Leanne. “I wanted to show brides that you do not have to stand still for your portraits. You can have fun, swirl your dress around or channel your inner model and have fun with your photos!”

OF LOVE The look

Local professionals provide their trend predictions for 2023

www.victoriaamrose.co.uk

HAIR CARE HERO

Many people believe that next year’s bridal trends will be influenced by the 80s, with lots of pearl detailing, bows getting bigger and the puff sleeve making a come back. Whilst flowers in a bride’s hair can make a hairstyle pop, I predict that 2023 will be all about sleek waves and more structured up dos. The Hollywood wave can look beautifully understated, allowing a more extravagant dress to take centre stage. Pinning one side of the hair up with a satin bow is a simple yet effective way to complement the dress, along with some beautifully brushed-out waves, of course!

You shouldn’t feel that you have to wear your hair up just because it’s your wedding day. If you’re used to wearing your hair down, then there are still many ways of achieving a great look, with accessories playing a key role.

A structured look does not have to mean a scary amount of hairspray to go with it. When creating an up do, I consider the bride’s face shape, hair type and how they feel comfortable wearing it.

Lots of brides feel as though they have to grow their hair long to achieve a statement up do. This is not the case, as shoulder-length hair is perfectly adequate. There is no need to worry if you have fine hair either. There are tricks of the trade to create the illusion of volume and texture. An in-depth consultation and trial are all that you will need to feel confident that your wedding day hair will be the masterpiece that you’ve always dreamt of!

LOOKING YOUR BEST 71
Louise Price With trends constantly changing and the added pressure of looking your best, we understand how overwhelming the wedding planning process can be. To help make things a bit easier, we’ve rounded up some top tips and trend predictions from local suppliers. Getty Images Getty Images Getty Images Getty Images

SEARCHING FOR THE ONE

Next year will bring some amazing trends to the world of wedding dresses. Some of these we’ve already seen hints of, such as capes and feathering, but others will be more dramatic such as one-shouldered gowns and more silvers and blues – you might even say that blue could be the new ivory! The Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection has flown out in customisable colour options, with blue being the favourite so far. If Disney is your thing, then definitely keep an eye out, as these gowns are set to be stunning!

Boho is still storming the scene, and with the cowgirl theme getting stronger, we expect to see more jackets and fringe detailing. Our boho pick is always the Wilderly Bride Collection, as this epitomise all things boho, and next year’s collection doesn’t disappoint.

Asymmetric necklines and false tops or jackets are also going to big,

allowing brides to find that elusive style that everyone seems to want at the moment.

Customisation is also going to be huge for the same reason, so make sure you have a seamstress booked in, as they will be getting booked up already. It’s a skill that not everyone has, so make sure you do your research and don’t just go for the cheapest option! There is a huge difference between someone that turns up curtains and someone that can customise and alter a wedding gown.

My top pick for next year would be silver. This year we saw a lot of gold and corset gowns, but I think it’s time for silver to shine.

HAIR OF THE FUTURE

Next year looks set to be full of organic, boho looks that offer an effortless and romantic style for your big day. A low and textured bun with lots of wispy, airy texture would fit this style perfectly, creating a beautifully undone yet done look.

The half-up half-down style, which offers brides the best of both worlds, will be popular. Braids and twists can be added to this style to make it a little bit more special.

SUITED AND BOOTED

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Founded by MUA Karla Powell, Karla Cosmetics creates handmade, on trend, colour-shifting eyeshadows and has recently launched its Romance Quad Palette – get ready to fall in love! Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. It conceals without drying out the skin, and with continued use can even benefit the complexion since alpha-bisabolol of natural origin is soothing. WINTER BLUES

Q&A Fashion and beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

My lips get dry and cracked in the winter. What’s the best way to combat this?

This is something that we all have to deal with, but the good news is there are lots of things you can do to correct it. At times when your lips are particularly flaky, use your toothbrush. Make sure it’s wet and gently move it across your lips in circular motions. This will help to remove any dead skin.

You can never apply too much lip balm but make sure you have the correct one for your needs. Some act as a barrier and sit on the skin to protect it. These very often contain an SPF. Others work deep down to replenish the moisture. You can even use both!

When choosing a lipstick, steer clear of matte colours and go for moisturising ones with a dewy finish. You may need to re-apply these more often, but they will look much better as matte colours can show up every patch of dry skin.

Add these steps to your daily routine, and you will have soft, kissable lips ready for your wedding day.

COLOUR POP

I’m an older bride about to celebrate my second marriage. I’m self-conscious and don’t want to wear a white gown but still want to look bridal. Are there any colours that would suit my big-day look?

Firstly, congratulations on your up-and-coming wedding. Of course, there are so many options for you to choose from. Generally speaking, brides tend to go for an ivory gown but you will also see mocha, moscato and latte and biscotti undertones. You could even choose a gown that is blush, dusky lavender or ice rose and customise your look by adding lace.

Your bridal consultant will spend time getting to know you, discussing your day and the styles you have in mind. They will look at necklines, shapes and colours with you and even throw in wild card options that you may not have considered before.

It may be that you feel more confident with some coverage on your neckline or arms, if so, look at adding a lace jacket to your gown.

There are lots of options for you to look truly bridal on your wonderful day. Always remember that your bridal consultants are there to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection.

Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

HONEYMOON NEWS 83
The Standard

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

88
Beth Morton and her hubby visited The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
