New year, new you
EDITOR’S LETTER
Y
es, it’s that magical time of the year once again when winter is upon us bringing with it the fun and festivities of Christmas followed by a new year which is a great time to begin any resolutions. I don’t know about you but 2023 passed by quickly for me, and luckily it has been a wonderful one. I’m very blessed to be a proud auntie to my little nephew, Malachi who was born last Christmas – the best present ever! I’ve also been lucky enough to experience some memorable trips and experiences throughout the summer months including snorkelling in Mauritius; yoga in Turkey; a speedboat trip around the Greek islands and sightseeing in Miami and New Orleans. To celebrate the start of a new year, I’ve compiled a bumper issue for you to enjoy. There’s everything from themed real weddings and styled shoots to magical winter venues, perfect for cosy and atmospheric seasonal weddings. Don’t miss the latest news, offers, fashion, beauty and honeymoon ideas plus my review of a visit to the spa hotel Donnington Valley in the heart of Berkshire - a great place to kick start January! For those of you getting married soon, I wish you many congratulations and for those not taking the plunge until later in 2024, I’ll see you next issue. Happy New Year!
I was lucky enough to visit the spa hotel Donnington Valley in Berkshire recently – read my review on page 25.

INDEPENDENT BERKSHIRE-BASED BREWERY MAKES £10,000 CHARITY DONATION Reading-based Siren Craft Brew has donated £10,000 to Make A Wish Foundation, Launchpad Reading and Lymphoma Action UK - a mix of causes chosen by the Siren team after achieving its Lumina Hour goals. The brewery, known for its adventurous and creative beers, set out to get its Lumina Session IPA pouring in 1,000 venues across the country and at the same time, aimed to trend on X. This campaign celebrated the third anniversary of Lumina, a beer launched in lockdown 2020. It has fast become Siren’s best-selling beer, popular for its juicy hop flavours and aromas of tropical fruits. The beer is gluten-free, further adding to its universal appeal. Darron Anley, founder of Siren Craft Brew said: “It’s a real challenge as a small business right now, whether that’s getting into pubs where the big brewers have tied up all the access and restricted choice for consumers, or online where we see the big social media platforms unwilling to show our followers organic posts. #LuminaHour is an example of what can be achieved when the amazing beer community comes together, raising an incredible amount of money in the process.” Deborah Laing, director of fundraising and communications for Lymphoma Action said: “Everyone at Lymphoma Action is so grateful to Siren Craft Brew for their generous contribution. Thanks to wonderful supporters like the Siren team, our charity can continue providing vital information and services to people affected by lymphoma, the fifth most common cancer in the UK.” Senior fundraising manager at Launchpad Reading, Fiona Keyte, 8
said: “This is an incredibly generous thing for Siren to do and we’re thrilled that they chose Launchpad as one the charities to benefit. In the past year, we’ve helped 1,400 people across Reading who were homeless or at risk of losing their home and demand across our services has gone up by 30% - so support from passionate local businesses like this helps us to continue doing what we do as the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect everyone.” Katrina Shaw, partnerships lead at Make-A-Wish UK said: “We’re grateful to Siren for their help to give critically ill children a chance to have their wishes come true. Every child deserves a childhood and the power of a wish can bring light and joy to children and their families and help create magical memories that last a lifetime.” To shop, visit www.sirencraftbrew.com

J
ade and Matt met at Oxford Brookes University in 2013. “I worked with Matt’s friend who introduced us and our relationship blossomed from there,” Jade tells us. “Matt proposed to me during a trip to the Cotswolds where we stayed in a place called Piglet Cottage. With the help of our sausage dog, Malcolm, who was dressed in a bow tie printed with the words ‘she said yes’, Matt got down on one knee in front of the fire and asked me to marry him. It was a wonderful, romantic surprise! For the past five years, I had always packed my best clothes and make-up whenever we went away, should a proposal happen, but it never did. The one time I packed my comfortable unflattering clothes, it happened!”
SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose the wonderful Rackleys Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire as the venue for their special day. “The stunning high ceilings, beautiful grounds and super-friendly staff first attracted us to the venue,” Jade tells us. “The bridal room was a space that we loved, as well as the cosy seating area upstairs which we thought would provide a great spot for our guests to enjoy playing games in during our winter wedding.” On the big day itself, the snow mixed with the blue skies created a romantic setting for their special day. “Seeing our loved ones enjoy the day that we had been planning for years warmed our hearts,” Jade tells us. “Having our dog, Malcolm wearing a little tuxedo for the pictures was priceless - I loved seeing him running through the snow!” Jade and Matt chose a seasonal colour theme of champagne tones
“Our wedding was the best day of our lives. We were both on a high for the entire day and didn’t want it to end!” - Jade and Matt

teamed with white and forest green. “Our beautiful flowers helped determine our wedding theme,” Jade says. “We had subtle white blooms, champagne-coloured flowers and plenty of fir and greenery alongside pine cones that were scented with pine cone perfume. Our centrepieces were floating candles in stemmed glass and cylinder vases along with snowflake-shaped table numbers, ivy and plenty more pine cones. We gifted our guests fun favours which were gin bottles for the ladies, whiskey bottles for the men and sausage dog-shaped chocolates for the children!” Jade and Matt chose Absolute Cuisine at Rackleys to serve their guests a delicious wedding breakfast. “They could choose between courses which included leek and potato soup to start, steak pie as the main course and sticky toffee pudding for dessert – the perfect menu for a winter wedding!” Jade says. “Our spiced apple and cinnamon wedding cake presented on a wooden log with photos of us and a model of Malcolm on the side was popular with our guests.”
LOOKING THE PART Jade wore a satin, off-the-shoulder bridal dress accessorized with a pearl and diamanté belt, a pair of pearl earrings and a bracelet. “Matt wore a light-blue suit jacket and waistcoat teamed with a white shirt and tie and a pair of black trousers and shoes,” Jade tells us. “He chose a different colour tie from the groomsmen who wore the same outfits as him but with champagne-coloured ties that suited our colour theme.” The couple’s bridesmaids looked beautiful in their elegant, champagne-coloured gowns in three different styles. “One picked a halterneck dress with sequin detail; another chose a one-shoulder design and our other bridesmaid wore one with floaty sleeves.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE Jade and Matt hired a DJ who did a great job. “One of our memorable moments from the wedding is when he played the song Love Train by the O’Jays and almost everybody joined in to form a love train around the venue!” Jade says. “We also really enjoyed our first dance because members of our bridal party set off confetti canons mid-way through it!” The couple also had a photo booth and gave their guests a basket of props including hats and glasses for them to dress up in for the photographs. “We also had a pizza van during the evening which went down well with everyone!” Jade tells us. 35
Top tip: “Remember the day is about you and your partner, so everything should be your choice. Don’t let people’s opinions sway you from the things you want to do… and enjoy the planning, it’s part of it!” - Jade and Matt

H
annah and James met at the Corn Exchange Wallingford theatre, during an audition for an Agatha Christie murder mystery in July 2018. “I thought that James was tall, dark and handsome but too young for me because he is five years younger,” Hannah says. “In the end, I decided to pursue things although James was more forthcoming than I was and we shared some kisses off stage in the wings!” James proposed to Hannah in October 2021 during a trip to Bournemouth. “He surprised me with a weekend at a country club spa hotel that he had booked for our anniversary,” Hannah tells us. “On the first night after dinner, he got down on one knee in our bedroom
and asked me to marry him - he had a bottle of champagne on ice! The engagement ring was a stunning heirloom that was given to him by his grandmother, but it originally belonged to his great auntie. The next day, we walked into Bournemouth along the seafront and ate at the Hot Rocks restaurant on the beach where I used to work when I was at Bournemouth University. They gave us some complimentary fizz and a discount on dinner because I still knew the manager there.” Hannah tells us all about their church ceremony followed by a riverside reception at The Swan At Streatley that was decorated with a pretty-in-pink and blue colour theme. 39

SETTING THE SCENE Charlotte and Jerry chose Woolstone: All Saints church for their ceremony because both of Charlotte’s grandparents are buried there so it’s a special place to her. “We both decided, after looking at a few wedding venues, that having a marquee wedding was what we wanted so that we had the freedom to choose all of our own suppliers,” Charlotte explains. Charlotte and Jerry invited 100 of their family and very close friends to their church service and had a further 80 guests meet them afterwards at their marquee reception. “We had a big welcome and cheers when we arrived!” Charlotte says. “We were both smiling from the moment we saw each other in the church until the end of the night. We can’t explain the high we were both feeling, we kept taking a few moments together to embrace everything that was happening around us and appreciate every step we had worked so hard to organise.” Charlotte and Jerry have good friends who live not far from their chosen church who let them have their couple photos taken in their garden. “There was a perfect spot in front of their pond where you can see White Horse Hill in the background,” Charlotte says. “We also used their driveway that was lined with trees for a few shots - the photos turned out amazing!” A family friend of the couple allowed them to use their field

for their marquee reception. “We positioned it so that our guests could enjoy a view of White Horse Hill in the background,” Charlotte tells us. “We held our drinks reception in a wooded area that we decorated with vases filled with flowers and also green paper lanterns. We lit up this area for when our guests left at the end of the night too which looked magical.” The couple chose a timeless white, cream and green colour theme for their marquee reception. “I wanted to put a personalised touch on things so for the table plan, I bought a large white mirror from The Range and printed the names for each table on card and stuck these to the mirror,” Charlotte says. “For our welcome sign, I made a collage of our favourite photos and ordered a welcome sticker from Etsy with our wedding date and ‘welcome to our wedding’ printed on. We positioned these on two easels that were displayed as our guests walked into the marquee.” Charlotte and Jerry used numbers instead of names for their 18 tables and purchased handmade place names from Etsy. “We coordinated them with our theme by using green card, cream ribbon and calligraphy writing,” Charlotte describes. “For our centrepieces, we wanted to keep things simple so had a green glass bottle from Hobbycraft on each table holding the numbers with three bud vases filled with pretty white and green flowers surrounding each bottle. I told my florist our chosen colour theme and let her work her magic. She created a gorgeous archway for the church doorway, along with beautiful bouquets for myself and my bridesmaids and mini bouquets for our flowergirls. I have two very talented bridesmaids who decorated a hoop that was suspended above the round bar in the marquee. They collected all of the greenery from their gardens and made the most stunning display.” Charlotte and Jerry chose a tall two-tier cake decorated with a bow that Charlotte’s mother-in-law made using offcuts from the bridesmaids’ dresses. “The top tier was a chocolate one and the bottom tier was vanilla and strawberry-flavoured,” Charlotte says. “We served our cake as dessert along with cream and fresh berries.” From the very start of planning their wedding, Charlotte and Jerry wanted to have their good friend Jake, the owner of Quintin Catering, as their wedding caterer. “He let us have full control over our menu,” Charlotte tells us. “Half of our guests were Irish so we wanted to try and please everybody. For starters, our guests had a choice of tomato and mozzarella bruschetta or smoked salmon and prawn salad. For the main course, there was a filet of beef with chips and dauphinoise potatoes along with vegetables, peppercorn and béarnaise sauce, or seabass. The canapés were mini Yorkshire puddings with beef brisket, tempura prawns with sweet chilli sauce and tomato and mozzarella arancini balls. Our evening food, also catered by Jake, was mini fish and chips and homemade sourdough pizzas - we also had a cheese and sweet treat table. We had one shot available at the bar for the evening which was a Baby Guinness (a blend of Tia Maria and Baileys) as a nod to our Irish guests! We loved seeing everyone having such a good time. It meant so much to us to have our guests tell us how good the food was. Seeing our large marquee full of love and laughter was an incredible feeling.”
REAL WEDDINGS
LOOKING THE PART Charlotte visited The Bridal Dress Company in Newbury with her mum with no idea what style she was looking for. “I tried on five different gowns and fell in love with the second one as soon as I put it on!” She tells us. “It was a stunning lace off-the-shoulder design called Elissa by Justin Alexander. The train was beautiful and sparkled as I walked and I styled it with a long pearl-studded veil, a pair of diamond and pearl earrings, and a diamond bracelet gifted to me by my sister who was my maid-of-honour.” One of Charlotte’s best friends is a make-up artist based in Manchester. “She was part of my glam squad, along with Georgia of Gee Hair & Beauty, and we chose Hollywood waves for the 47
Top tip: “Make sure you enjoy all of the planning and lead-up to your wedding and don’t stress too much. Get help from friends and family and delegate tasks. You’ll be surprised how many people love to help out and want to be involved in the planning, not just on the day.” - Charlotte and Jerry hairstyles,” Charlotte says. “Jerry chose a blue tuxedo for himself and his best man, the two groomsmen and both of our fathers. They all wore bow ties (Jerry’s was a velvet one so that he looked a bit different) with a black cummerbund and a pair of black patent shoes to finish the look and they all looked so handsome!” The couple’s bridesmaids wore olive crepe dresses from Pretty Lavish. “I won a competition on the company’s Instagram to win two bridesmaids’ dresses and I adored the olive colour as soon as I saw them, and love that this style suited them all! One of my bridesmaids is a make-up artist so she did all of the bridesmaids’ make-up too!”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “Our band, Tux Fizz, were incredible,” Charlotte tells us. “Singer Chris performed during our reception drinks and then throughout our wedding breakfast. The rest of the band joined him later and the energy from them was fantastic - the dancefloor was full all night and they interacted with our guests. Everyone kept commenting on how amazing they were. There were a lot of lost voices by the end of the night!”

SEASONAL CELEBRATIONS Can you offer us some cosy winter wedding styling ideas? Meet the expert: Joely Higton is the venue stylist at Ambience Venue Styling Buckinghamshire. Joely says: I am a big believer in simple things done well. Beautiful styling, florals and candlelight are perfect for creating a cosy and intimate winter wedding. The contrast of tall dinner candles and flickering tea lights gives the dark tones a lift and creates a cosy atmosphere across your tables and venue. Coordinating luxury table linens and stationery gives your styling a complete and finished look. Lush greenery and neutral floral tones can create full and beautiful table runners and backdrops, both perfect for enriching your tablescape and aisle decor with seasonal greens and popping winter whites. For those looking for taller centrepieces and round tables, height from your flowers, lower-level candlelight and metallic accessorising through adding charger plates, gold cutlery and different coloured glassware can add a pop of luxe and a nod to the festive season. Making a feature of beautiful stationary and signage can make your styling feel complete. Complimenting this with reworked ceremony backdrops and floor lanterns can add impact to an empty corner and entranceway as your guests arrive, the same can be applied to making a feature out of your beautiful wedding cake by using an elegant pedestal and adorning it with flowers and more romantic candlelight. www.ambiencevenuestyling.com/ wedding-stylists/buckinghamshire; www.facebook.com/AmbienceVenueStylingUK; www.instagram.com/ambiencevenuestylinguk

A RIVERSIDE WEDDING We’re planning our summer wedding and want some wonderful venue options – what do you suggest? The venue: Monks’ Barn is a 13th-century, Grade II listed medieval barn that offers a special venue for ceremonies, wedding receptions and parties. Set in the riverside village of Hurley between Marlow and Henley on the bank of the River Thames, it’s open from May until September and is licensed for ceremonies that can take place anywhere in the building, with the added option of saying ‘I do’ under the stunning archway leading to the lawn. The Great Hall in the barn can seat up to 120 guests at long tables or up to 150 loved ones at round tables for the wedding breakfast. Adjacent to the Great Hall is the Monks’ Bar and The Dance Hall which has ample room for a DJ. Guests can be received on Monks’ Barn lawn, where there’s plenty of room for a marquee plus secure overnight parking. This versatile venue allows receptions to take place anywhere inside the building and couples can create a bespoke day with their choice of caterer, florist and furnishings. The park is family friendly making it the ideal choice for couples wanting to enjoy a familymoon in the region afterwards. https://hurleyriversidepark.co.uk/about-us/monks-barn; www.facebook.com/HurleyRiversidePark; www.instagram.com/hurleyriversidepark
ALL WRAPPED UP We’re looking for an alternative to the traditional wedding gift list, what can you suggest? Meet the expert: Jan Jenkins is the owner and founder of Gifts Instead of Flowers based in Buckinghamshire offering affordable unique gifts from UK-based artists and small businesses who retain 100% of their sales revenue whilst supporting William’s Fund. Jan says: Weddings are special occasions that deserve unique gifts. But finding the perfect gift for the happy couple can be challenging. Guests want to invest in something meaningful, memorable, and unique that they will cherish for years to come. According to our research, personalised gifts are immensely popular right now, especially artwork that captures the personality and style of the couple. A personalised artwork is not a generic or mass-produced item that you can buy from any store. It is a one-of-a-kind creation, especially for the recipients, based on their preferences and interests. It shows that you have put thought and effort into choosing a gift that suits them. Sending a personalised gift shows that you care and here are three ideas. Artist Jesse Brown offers a range of customised portraits that include the bride and groom in various scenarios (pictured). Jesse is a Londonbased artist who finds inspiration in the streets of Camden. He loves painting scenes from everyday life, observing people going about their daily business, lost in their thoughts, or chatting 62
on the street. Jesse has exhibited his paintings in various galleries and has worked with the likes of BBC, Alexander McQueen, St Paul’s Foundation, Soho House, and St Martin’s. Jesse Brown at Gifts Instead of Flowers Jo Gogh, whose vibrant paintings are full of joy and colour offers personalised heart-shaped artwork which is a bestseller as a canvas or a cushion that would brighten up any room. Or why not send an enamel postcard by MaisyPlum? It is unique and can be personalised for the happy couple! These adorable enamel cards (pictured) can be written on with permanent ink with your message. Each postcard can then be stored safely in a wallet or framed as a picture and come gift-boxed. www.giftsinsteadofflowers.com; www.facebook.com/giftsinsteadofflowers; www.instagram.com/giftsinsteadofflowers

Alongside this win, Nawar has also gained the title of FINALIST with many make-up award bodies. Nawar is the founder of Makeup Artist UK and a make-up and beauty influencer with more than 25,000 followers. The BABTAC & CIBTAC Awards honour excellence within the industry at both national and international levels. A select few members in each field are chosen for this distinguished honour, based on their professional achievements, academic excellence, leadership prowess, experience, affiliations, and contributions to their communities. All finalists were invited to the BABTAC’s annual award ceremony at the Fairmont Windsor Hotel, a night dedicated to honouring their accomplishments. Throughout her career, Nawar has received numerous awards and accolades, gaining global recognition for her expertise in the make-up and beauty profession. This year, she was recognised by the Hitched Wedding Awards 2023, securing her place among the best Makeup Artist Wedding professionals in the UK and Global Winner for the International Makeup Artist Wedding Awards 2023. REAL BEAUTY Rosie Pickup is a professional make-up artist based in Witney, Oxfordshire. She’s fully trained in a wide range of styles, from high-fashion to Hollywoodinspired glamour and natural make-up, specialising in making brides look and feel like the best version of themselves on their wedding day, whatever their age, gender, or style. Rosie’s studio offers a cosy and relaxed environment to enjoy a make-up trial before the big day. “I offer one-to-one lessons for clients who want to learn how to do their own make-up which is perfect for those getting married abroad,” she tells us. Winter is the perfect season to wear warm tones and of course, a festive red lipstick whether it be a classic pillar-box shade, a flattering berry colour, or a warm terracotta look. Jewel tones are also great for the winter season with a touch of emerald or sapphire applied on the eyelids which can make them pop. www.facebook.com/rosiepickupmakeup www.instagram.com/rosiepickupmakeup 65
WELCOME IN Natalie Cameron is the director of Marlow-based Your Story Bridal Boutique. She takes us behind the doors of the boutique revealing what designers have in store this season. She says: “This Ti Amo dress is perfect for autumn and winter weddings because of the long lace sleeves. Crafted with lace that’s intricately placed on a fitted corset bodice and down the soft A-line skirt, a sweetheart neckline and soft netting finish the look.” Savannah is ideal for the modern bride! Natalie says, “This figure-hugging, floor-length gown (right) is modern and sophisticated, oozing seductive femininity with class. Crafted from the softest crepe material, it allows brides to feel comfortable and secure on their wedding day. Add extra drama with a detachable overskirt and long-sleeve gloves, made in the same crepe fabric.” Natalie adds, “This is a great option for brides who want the look of sleeves but potentially would like to remove them for later in the day, or for the wedding reception. This also gives them the bonus of two looks in one with a detachable train as well!” Kyha (right) is perfect for a Christmas or New Year wedding with added sparkle! The gown is tailored with a deep square neckline, slim straps, and a sheer bodice with shaping boning and underwire. An open back, a strap around the waist and a scattering of silver beads and faux pearls all over provide the perfect finishing touch. Lila (right) is a simple design, a classic style with a modern twist with puff sleeves. The soft fitand-flare silhouette highlights all the right areas, crafted from lightweight crepe that is comfortable to wear. The square neckline is modern yet timeless with long sleeves detailing a button opening. Buttons also decorate the back of the dress down to the 30-inch chapel train. New for 2024 is the Love & Liberty Trunk Show taking place from the 12th to the 14th of January. Every dress from the latest collection will be on show, along with pieces from the exclusive Luxe Edit. Brides who order their Love & Liberty dress that weekend will get 10% off their order. JUMBO JEWELS Tom Reid, the diamond and jewellery consultant from Oxfordshire-based award-winning independent jeweller Lover’s Rock explores the key trends from the past year. He tells us, “Lab-grown diamonds are becoming very popular for engagement rings in different shapes such as pear, marquise and oval cuts. Large 1.5-carat and 2-carat central diamonds on slim bands are regularly requested and yellow gold continues to grow in popularity.” For wedding bands, diamond-set designs are what shoppers are looking for, with larger statement designs a best-selling style. “Vintage rings are still trending,” Tom says. For groomsto-be, hammered-effect wedding bands are a popular choice. https://loversrockdiamonds.co.uk www.facebook.com/loversrockdiamonds www.instagram.com/lovers_rock_diamonds 66

The Lavender veil has a pretty crystal-encrusted border while the Forget-Me-Not design boasts crystal flowers. FASHION AND BEAUTY STYLE ALERT Eloise Rose Design is a start-up wedding business and founder Eloise has a wealth of experience from her time as a theatre and costume designer. Having always been fascinated with fashion, textiles, and formalwear, she has a vast knowledge of traditional and contemporary fashion. When she became engaged, she knew that she wanted to use her experience to create her own wedding dress which led her into the world of designing wedding dresses, formalwear and bridal wear that accentuates the wearer as a person, capturing their unique personality and representing everything about them.
This navy dress, with the veil, is designed to represent winter weddings and without the veil, this dress can also work well for bridesmaids. The gathering in the skirt is designed to bring a softness and elegance
to complement the sheer bodice while the curved boning is designed to represent femininity. I chose to complement this dress with a bouquet of winter blooms that also capture these ideas of strength and beauty. The design of this white dress was influenced by two sources – the freedom and playfulness of a wildflower meadow combined with the first gentle glimpse of spring on a winter’s walk. The dress is meant to provoke feelings of this being the end of one chapter, and the start of another. I believe that a bride’s transformation should pay homage to the person they were before whilst also being the first step on their new adventure. New for 2024 is that Eloise Rose Design will be in attendance at more than double the number of wedding fairs than in 2023, with five scheduled across Berkshire in the spring. We’re also looking forward to the first time that one of our dresses will be worn to a gala event. We still have availability for 2024 dates and encourage brides to reach out – bespoke doesn’t have to mean expensive! www.eloiserose.co.uk www.facebook.com/people/Eloise-Rose/100092460471765 www.instagram.com/eloiserosedesign
VINTAGE VIBES Eden Keshia, a luxury atelier specialising in vintage bridal wear and Buckinghamshire-based Love & Loved Bridal Boutique have teamed up to offer fashion-conscious, vintage-loving, eco-brides access to a carefully curated edit of vintage wedding dresses. The collaboration between Eden Keshia and Love & Loved Bridal is a match made in heaven, each with a vision to bring contemporary wedding wear to brides seeking originality and sustainable, luxury bridal fashion. To help brides on their vintage wedding dress journey, Love & Loved Bridal and Eden Keshia have shared their advice on how to shop and wear vintage on your wedding day. They tell us, “Shopping vintage is not only a sustainable way to choose your wedding dress but can also be stylish too. Since vintage pieces were made before fast fashion took a firm grip on us all, and before online shopping was the thing, vintage clothing is often much more desirable and durable. Clothing needed to have hanger appeal so the fabrics are often more tactile and interesting compared to what we see today. Of course, people wanted to know what they were buying would last and so vintage clothing is often high quality and why we are still able to wear it today.” What’s your vintage style? “When shopping vintage, you do not have to compromise on your style. Purchase items that are reflective of your personality and suit your style. Consider the era of vintage you love. Seek out specialists in these areas or use a sourcing service, provided by Eden Keshia to seek out the perfect gown. However, don’t limit yourself and consider mixing eras harmoniously to create a more original look. Also, consider what’s already in your wardrobe. Seek out patterns, textures and colours that you know you love and try to find them in a wedding dress.” What if I can’t find what I’m looking for? “If you can’t quite find what you’re looking for then consider whether a vintage item can be tweaked or redesigned to become the gown you dream of. Or perhaps you have found a vintage dress, skirt, top or fabric that you love. This can be used to make a new dress or part
of your wedding outfit. Remember, you don’t have to be confined to just one piece. An expert designer and maker such as Eden Keshia can work with you to bring more than one gown together, utilising fabrics, embellishments and other details, creating an entirely new gown while staying true to the original pieces. Offcuts and fabrics from smaller garments can be used to make wedding accessories, such as veils, belts and bags. Nothing needs to go to waste! Does a family member have a gown that can be handed down? If you are lucky enough to inherit a family heirloom, perhaps your grandmother’s wedding dress then consider whether it could work for your wedding. If the dress is too small, the fabric and its embellishments can be reused. If the style isn’t quite right then it can be modified. It’s amazing what a difference you can make with a fresh and modern perspective on pieces. Choosing vintage on your wedding day gives precious items a second life. By choosing vintage you are challenging fast fashion and the bridal industry which will make an impact on future trends and how bridal fashion becomes available to future brides. Most of all, choosing vintage will give you an original wedding day look that will be unique to you and packed with sentiment.” www.loveandloved.co.uk www.facebook.com/loveandlovedbridal www.instagram.com/loveandlovedbridal 69

Beauty queen
We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty
H
annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.
Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 82
There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.
INTERVIEW
How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.
What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin
The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 83

She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.
sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.
TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

BEST BEAUTY BUYS Can you suggest some affordable skincare products to help me achieve glowing skin for my winter wedding? Meet the expert: Shelly Woods is the founder of Skin Techniques Aesthetics, an Aylesbury-based salon in Buckinghamshire. Shelly says: Medik8 Gentle Cleanse Hydrating Rosemary Foam, £9 for 40ml, is for very sensitive skin. It features mild cleansing agents plus sensitive-friendly ingredients, optimised for gentle cleansing power. The lightweight foam leaves skin feeling refreshed, hydrated and soft to the touch with key ingredients rosemary leaf oil and glycerin. Rosemary leaf oil works to neutralise damaging free radicals from the environment that are residing on the skin’s surface, helping to prevent the signs of premature ageing while natural glycerin infuses the skin with hydration, ensuring it never feels dry or tight. This lightweight foaming cleanser is pH-balanced and created with sensitive skin in mind. It’s gentle yet effective with a mild formula that works to gently lift impurities and dirt including light make-up, sunscreen and daily impurities. Use morning and evening by massaging into your moistened face and neck then gently remove foam by splashing with water and pat face dry, www.medik8.com/products/gentle-cleanse Another great product suitable for most skin types including oily or combination skin with enlarged pores is Cera-C Pore Reducing Toner T1, £15 for 200ml, from Facetheory. It’s a lightweight toner formulated with ceramides and 5% niacinamide (vitamin B3) to balance oil, promote elasticity, and minimise pore size. Ceramide is a component of the protective layer that helps skin to retain moisture. This layer can diminish with age and exposure to environmental stressors so this toner helps to replenish it and restore your skin’s natural balance. Panthenol (vitamin B5) helps the skin to absorb moisture while stabilised Vitamin C fights acne-causing bacteria and brightens skin. Facetheory toners are alcohol-free. This gives them a slightly different feel to an alcohol-based toner and makes them less likely to irritate sensitive skin. It’s free of parabens and silicones plus it’s vegan and cruelty-free. Use daily after cleansing by gently applying over the entire face and neck avoiding the eye area. Do not rinse, follow with serum and moisturiser, www.facetheory.com The Q+A Vitamin C Eye Cream, £8 for 15ml at Holland and Barrett

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be
M
odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.
People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.
How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.
What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding
process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

The Italian dream
Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village
F
or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.
on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.
RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY
The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.
Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.
FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.
For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.
DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my
