Winter warmers W
ell, here we are at the end of the another year. Is it me, or did 2023 fly by faster than usual? Mind you, with the pandemic growing more and more distant in our rear view mirrors as weddings embrace a sense of back to normality, it’s no wonder really. The highlights for me were the Coronation and Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliant win at Wimbledon, as well as getting to see some more of Europe and, of course, celebrating Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding’s shiny new website! When you’ve read this issue, why not have a look around? There’s plenty on offer to keep you ahead of the curve with your wedding planning. Autumn was unseasonably warm, so I have everything crossed from some chilly weather this winter; especially for those of you with cosy December or January nuptials in store. Summer’s all well and good, but the time comes when it’s great to just snuggle up in your favourite jumper and curl up with your spouse-to-be in front of your favourite Netflix show, or better still, with your tablet and favourite wedding magazine! This issue we’ve created an entire section dedicated to all you gorgeous grooms out there! From a Q&A special looking into your grooming and fashion worries, to an oh-so cool Peaky Blinders-inspired shoot, you won’t want to miss a page. Finally, for a touch of winter magic, check out our Hot Topic pages where the region’s experts tell us how to bring the joy of the season to your nuptials. So as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

IT MAKES PERFECT SCENTS Bristol-based Scents of Humour was born out of the Covid-19 chaos when founder Jack was unemployed due to the pandemic. At the time, and having just become a father to baby Henry, he and good friend Aaron hatched a plan to design and make candles in their kitchens. The two have been friends since school and always joked about making products together. Following a successful launch in 2020, Aaron took a step away from the business due to work commitments, leaving Jack and his wife Katie to run Scents of Humour. Although Jack has since gone back to work full time, he and Katie have kept the company going in their spare time. “Running the business gives us so much enjoyment – making candles and trying to come up with funny new names for them,” Jack says. As well as the hand-poured soy candles, which would make fab gifts for your bridal party, Scents of Humour is now also offering candle-making kits: Make Scents. Priced at £40, these include everything you need to make two 220g candles and are available in several fragrance options including Mums N’ Roses, Bruce Spring Clean and Better Latte Than Never. We think these are a lovely idea for a fun and crafty hen do activity. Find out more at https://scentsofhumour.co.uk
TIME TO DINE Based in Wincanton, Somerset, the team at Dorset Fine Dining have been looking forward to the new year and putting together some new and exciting ideas to bring to weddings. Recognising that sharing and relaxed weddings are on the increase, the team will be offering live chef stations, where they’ll put together a large Pavlova for guests to help themselves to, as well as other offerings. We love the idea of this piece of spectacle and theatre for a wedding day! Spider crab croquettes are new to the menu, a lovely canapé with hollandaise sauce, as well as potato and chocolate gnocchi lolly pops. Chef Nick Holt says, “Your wedding food should be remembered long after the big day, using British ingredients of distinction we’ll create an eye-catching and mouthwatering menu prepared with skill.” You can choose each dish from the extensive menus or allow Nick and his team to create your own bespoke menu – anything is possible! You’re also offered a tasting at Dorset Fine Dining HQ, where you’ll have the opportunity, alongside Nick, to go through everything you need to think about for the lead up to the day. A bar service is also on offer should you require. Find out more at www.dorsetfinedining.co.uk 9

TO EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES Barrels and orchards, boats and jetties, trains and steam... and you thought weddings could only take place in grand houses! From cider orchards to local waterways, and railways Jackie and Deb at Just Ceremonies are raising a toast to exciting new partnerships. The ladies are thrilled to have embarked on plans to conduct celebrant-led weddings in some unique and unusual locations such as in the Orchard at Sheppy’s Cider, near Taunton. Did you know, a small, intimate wedding can take place inside an actual cider barrel? In spring, the venue can even provide natural confetti in the form of apple blossom as your celebration unfolds. In a hectic world, Jackie and Deb have refined how they approach cherished moments. “Every moment is worth savouring and every story worth telling,” they tell us. CHEERS TO YOU The Gilchrist Collection’s CEO Samantha Gilchrist has conducted a survey of 2,000 UK adults to learn about their wedding drinking habits. Sober guests said they were often left feeling uncomfortable sipping a soft drink, as 35 per cent of respondents said they’re questioned about it. In response to the lack of non-alcoholic options available at venues, The Gilchrist Collection has partnered with star barman Merlin Griffiths from Channel 4’s First Dates to add to the venues’ existing menu, providing sober guests with three new grown-up and celebration-worthy options. Each recipe is perfectly suited to various key moments during the celebrations. Samantha says, “Rather than mimic existing cocktails or simply mix together some fruit juices, each of the new drinks has been designed to give the happy couple and their guests the chance to experience all the wonderful flavours a cocktail has, but without the alcohol. For more, head over to www.gilchristcollection.co.uk. Your local Gilchrist Collection venue is www.crowcombecourt.co.uk

REAL WEDDINGS
“
B
en winked at me while ice-skating on our first date, and in that exact moment I knew I’d found something special in this person,” says Hannah. It was remembering this special moment that made Ben book ice-skating for them again at the same rink while on a weekend away together in Bath a few years later. On the same spot where they took their first photo together, he got down on one knee and asked Hannah to marry him. “It was absolutely beautiful, the sky was dark, the air was crisp and the lights around the rink were glistening,” Hannah remembers. Hannah grew up in the village of East Coker. She was christened and her parents were married at East Coker Church, plus she spent every primary school year attending school plays and ceremonies there at Christmas. From a young age, she dreamed of getting married at the church, so the choice of ceremony location was an easy one. Ben grew up very close to Old Bridge, so the couple arranged a visit to the venue and within seconds of arriving had completely fallen in love with it. “John, Liz and Ariane have worked so hard to create such a magical space, and allow you to use it as a blank canvas,” Hannah explains. “Plus, the grounds and gardens are so well kept, even the simplest weddings look outstanding.” And thus the reception venue was chosen too, with the date set for 8th July, 2023. Read on as bride Hannah tells us all about it...
SETTING THE SCENE The couple settled on a gorgeous colour palette of emerald green, gold and blush pink, with a boho and vintage theme. Hannah created the centrepieces using metal lampshades and stands, which she sprayed gold. She then used faux flowers and pampas grass in shades complementing the palette to create floral displays to sit alongside them. Kim’s Bridal Bouquets in Radstock created the bouquets and corsages. “I sent a variety of ideas to Kim and asked her to include greens, blush pink and some gold in each one. The end result was absolutely beautiful,” Hannah shares. Hannah’s dad, Martin, made a 6ft wooden arch, which together with Hannah’s mum, Kate, he sanded and stained. The bride then used the large pampas from her grandparents’ garden she’d be drying out for the past 18 months to create a magnificent floral display to decorate it. It served as a fabulous photo opportunity with guests at the reception. They also purchased some old whisky barrels, which again Martin set to work on. He sanded these down and treated them, after which Hannah’s sign-painter grandad adorned them with the couple’s initials. “This made the venue look personal and provided guests with tables to set their drinks down on while gathering in the grounds,” Hannah says. Martin owns a 1964 VW split screen Campervan, which he’s spent many years rebuilding to make it exactly as he wants. In fact, Hannah has grown up with it in her life, so she asked for her dad to drive her to her wedding in this, his pride and joy. “This was one of the most special moments for me,” she says. “Not only was my dad able to give me away, but he was able to share a big joy in his life with me.”
“We felt so in love and joyful to have our families and friends around us. It really is a feeling you can’t explain.” – Hannah

SWEET AND SAVOURY Instead of favours Hannah and Ben decided on a large sweet cart. “We are big sweet lovers and it’s a little personal joke between us that makes us smile. So we wanted it to be part of our day,” Hannah explains. The couple’s cake was made by an old work colleague. Hannah supplied her with some of their flowers and simply told her to use her imagination! “We decided we wanted one caterer for the day to cover both the wedding breakfast and the evening food, and were very quick to choose our options,” Hannah shares. They kept it simple and opted for pâté, chutney and bread, or wild arancini balls to start. This was followed by tarragon chicken open pie, steak and ale open pie or beetroot pie as the vegetarian option, all served with mash and seasonal vegetables. Then, instead of a seated final course, a dessert table was laid out, which featured brownie and blondie stacks, banoffee pies, and strawberries and cream, allowing guests to help themselves to pudding when they were ready. Hannah and Ben were both astounded by Somerset Mobile Bars. Mark went above and beyond for them on the day to ensure guests’ drink requirements were catered for. “His communication leading up to the wedding was fantastic, and covered every detail,” Hannah says. During the evening, everyone enjoyed a hearty spread of pulled pork baps, apple sausage, and goats cheese and pepper tarts.
LOOKING THE PART Hannah looked stunning in her Ronald Joyce gown. She didn’t have any idea of style or shape when she started shopping, and tried on more than 20 gowns before she was able to narrow it down. Her dress was the last she tried on and she fell instantly in love, although it did require some tweaks to adapt it more to her taste. Ben, the couple’s son, and the groomsmen all wore a navy blue three-piece Limehause suit with a gold pin stripe. These were complemented with dark emerald green ties and personalised gold tie clips for each of the groomsmen. The three bridesmaids wore stunning emerald green, off-theshoulder, floor-length dresses.“ The quality and comfort of them was wonderful,” Hannah remembers.
CELEBRATE IN STYLE The couple hired local band The IOUs, who began entertaining guests from the moment they arrived. Band member Nick played an acoustic set during the welcome drinks. The complete band played two 90-minute sets later on in the evening, keeping the dancefloor packed. “They were great at keeping everyone on their feet, singing and dancing away,” Hannah remembers. “They performed a variety of music for all ages and even had a few moments duirng the evening where they got the groomsmen, myself and Ben up on the stage to sing!” Nick even learned the couple’s first dance song at their request. The tune they chose, Universe by Coldplay, was sentimental to them as it was the first one to play just after Ben proposed on the ice. “He did a fantastic cover and it really made the moment special and intimate for us.” 25
“Although it rained on and off most of the day, I can honestly say it didn’t ruin anything. In fact, it made the day even more exciting and pretty.” – Hannah MEMORABLE MOMENTS Ben’s moment of the day was seeing Hannah for the time as she walked down the aisle towards him at the altar. This caused him a huge flurry of emotions resulting in a lot of tears. Likewise for Hannah, arriving at the church and waiting outside the doors to make her entrance. She remembers her dad pushing them open to reveal a church filled with smiling faces and her gorgeous groom at the end of the aisle waiting for her. “It’s a moment I never wish to forget,” she says. “We would love to take this time to really complement our photographer,” says Hannah. “Shell was absolutely amazing. From the moment she arrived in the morning, she was full of positive energy and compliments making the lead up to the church feel so relaxed. Shell worked so hard every second of the day and didn’t once put her camera down. She captured every smile, every laugh and every tear. The finished photos are absolutely stunning and such a true story of the magical day it was.”

mily met Joe at a gin bar while she was in her final year of college. There was an instant attraction from both sides. Joe credits the cobbled streets of Bath, at least in part, for the success of their first date. When walking Emily to the bus stop she was wobbling around on them in her high heels and he was able to offer his arm to assist her – “And that was really where our love story began,” Emily says. Joe proposed while the two were away on a trip to Latvia. They’d been walking around the snowy city for a time as Joe looked for the perfect spot to pop the question. When he thought he’d found it, he asked Emily to pose beneath the tree for a picture, but as she walked towards it, she turned to him and said: “I need a wee!” So, they ended up having lunch in a nearby restaurant so that Emily could find a loo, before heading back to the hotel. Plans only slightly scuppered, Joe thought on his feet and finally asked her to marry him as they stood on their hotel balcony looking out over the snowy landscape. When the couple started looking for a wedding venue, top of their list was somewhere that could cater for all of their guests. “We wanted space for our “We knew we wouldn’t be young cousins to run around and explore, also having quieter areas for our nervous as we’ve never while older family members to escape from the made an easier decision. The madness,” Emily explains. A friend had morning of, there was told them about Old Oak Farm and its fabulous marquee, so they got in touch nothing but excitement to book a viewing. It was then they found while getting ready.” out that plans were underway to build a wedding barn ready for 2023. So, taking a huge leap of faith, they booked it for 1st July 2023 despite having only seen some architectural plans of the proposed venue. “When we got to see the finished barn in the May we couldn’t have been happier,” Emily shares. “It was everything we’d imagined and more. The beautiful combination of rustic charm with natural materials was exactly what we wanted.” Read on as Emily tells us the story of the big day...
SHARING IS CARING Emily spent a long time thinking about what gifts she could give guests as favours that they’d genuinely enjoy. She decided to collect various books from charity shops that reflected the two of them as a couple, and put these next to a sign saying, “Thank you for being part of our story, please take a book to celebrate our next chapter.” Any left behind they simply donated back to the charity shop. The couple have always loved sharing food and wanted to bring this aspect of their personalities to their wedding

day by serving sharing platters as the wedding breakfast. “We knew this could look messy and be quite tricky to implement but my dad had some old railway sleepers, which Joe cut to size, sandblasted and treated at his workshop. He’s a carpenter by trade, so he did an amazing job,” says Emily. “Then, when we set up the venue we put these in “What made the day extra the middle of the tables and raised them slightly. The bouquets featured white flowers and pale pastels along with greenery to complement the colours of the main palette. The bride’s aunty Lucy offered to make the venue flowers for the couple, and they gratefully accepted. “She spent hours creating the most beautiful displays, which tied in perfectly not only with our theme, but with the flowers created by our florist,” Emily says. Emily handmade all of the place names using various offcuts of their invitations. She used vellum and green card to create a layered 30
design tied together with black chiffon ribbon, all of which mirrored the wedding’s other stationery. They opted to number rather than name their tables, which were made of black acrylic and stuck onto broken stones as a nod to the natural theme. The venue supplied the day’s catering and Emily found the team to be incredibly flexible, providing exactly the kind of fare they wanted. To achieve their dream of a sharing wedding breakfast, Old Oak Farm supplied sharing platters and tapas-style dishes. The sister of one of Joe’s groomsmen made the couple’s big-day bake. They wanted something simple and opted for white buttercream decorated with the same flowers as those featured in the bouquets. As Krispy Kremes are a firm favourite with Emily and Joe, they placed a selection of the delicious doughnuts on a stand beneath the cake.
PEARLS OF WISDOM Emily wore a Maggie Sottero gown. “I knew I wanted a dress with a timeless feel that flattered my figure,” she says. “I want to be able to look back in 50 years and still be absolutely in love with the whole day, without feeling that anything had gone out of style.” She chose a dress in
the brightest white possible to give it a more modern twist and its simple silhouette meant she could add some fashion-forward accessories. Her veil featured pearl embellishments mirroring those in her earrings and in her hair. “I even had a French manicure with a white chrome on top to give it a pearlised effect,” she says. Joe wore a brown tweed three-piece suit from Suave Owl. He was dressed to match his groomsmen with the addition of a green pocket square and larger white rose buttonhole allowing him to stand out. He and his party all accessorised with matching green linen ties to coordinate with the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bridesmaids’ accessories were chosen to complement the pearl theme and had pearl hair grips and earrings to wear with their ASOS dresses. “To ensure they all had a dress they loved, I chose the colour (a silvery olive green), but told them I had no preference on the dress style,” Emily shares. “The outcome was that everybody felt happy and confident allowing them to fully enjoy the day.”
REAL WEDDINGS
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The couple wanted the day to be fun for all of their guests, and with an age range of six months to 91 years present, they knew they’d have to get creative. A bouncy castle was set up, which was a hit with the youngest guests during the afternoon, and an even bigger hit with the adults come the evening! Indeed, the newlyweds, along with their groomsmen and bridesmaids, had a hilarious time on it; falling over, having a laugh and trying to out bounce each other! There was also an ice cream stand to top up any hungry tummies, as well as a live string quartet who provided contemporary music with a classical feel. The groomsmen created their own entertainment during the speeches and came up with a sweepstake-style game, which involved giving each guest a word. Whenever that word was spoken during the speeches, the guest it belonged to would have to take a sip of their drink. One particularly unfortunate friend’s word was ‘Emily,’ and having gotten wind of the game at the top table by this point, Joe and the father-of-the-bride took great joy in tripling the amount of times they said it during their speeches. The result was a very tipsy guest who had to go to bed early! “Suitable payback for the stag do, I hear,” Emily tells us.

milene and Mark met at a local football presentation evening, and soon found themselves chatting away. At the time they were both in relationships with their own families, and at the end of the night went their separate ways not knowing what the future would hold. Five years later, and now free agents, their paths crossed again. Mark messaged Emilene asking to meet up. He says, “From then on, I was hooked. There’s not one day we don’t laugh or be silly together. She’s my best friend and a wonderful mother to our four beautiful children.” Emilene tells us, “It was an easy, ‘Yes,’ to meet up. In fact, the more we met up the more I knew for sure he was the one. He makes me laugh every day and it doesn’t matter what life throws at us as he’s my Brightside.” Mark proposed on St Ives beach; a place that’s special to them as it was the location for their first family holiday. He’d hidden the ring inside a sock in their beach bag. When the time came he gathered all the children around, presented her with the ring and popped the question. “Of course, I said, ‘Yes,’” Emilene says. “At that point we realised everyone around us was watching and cheered. I couldn’t stop smiling, I was so happy!” The couple viewed a number of venues before Batch Country House, which was last on the list. As soon as they drove into the grounds, they were taken aback by the amazingly beautiful landscaped gardens there and fell in love. “We like that we were given the option to get married outside as well has having an indoor alternative,” says Emilene. “The marquee-style reception room was also a huge selling point for us. We wanted everything in the same place, so having the bar, dancefloor and wedding breakfast all together, made that easier.” Join us now, as bride Emilene, tells us all about the big day, 27th August, 2023... 33

I tried on about eight gowns, before trying on a Lilian West design that I never thought I’d do justice to, but it was the one! I fell in love with its romantic vibe and long train.
The bridesmaids wore dusky pink midi skater dresses with a ribbon tie at the back – simple but beautiful. I stumbled across them online and knew my girls would look wonderful in them.
Our rustic favour boxes included a dusk y pink hear t shaped chocolate, along with a jigsaw piece to take away as a gift to remember the day. We also included a small highlighter pen so ever yone could play a game of bingo with us, as each place name conta ined a bingo card.
REAL WEDDINGS
Our table plan was laid out on a rustic white wooden ladder, finished off with dusky pink flowers and fairylights. Each table’s card was hung from a string by white heart pegs.
We bought artificial flowers and created our own bouquets using a mixture of dusky pink roses and gypsophila for me, and white roses and gypsophila for the bridesmaids. The stems were wrapped with hessian ribbon.
We made a display for the top table from a log we found in the woods. We sanded it down, painted our marr ied name on it, and wrapped it in fairylights.
with a log-slice base with a glass jar For our centrepieces, we decided to go containing fairylights. We also on top decorated with hessian ribbon and s for guests to write good wishes laid out little hear t-shaped memory card and memories on.
We decided to make our own three-tier wedding cake, which sat on a homemade log cake stand. The bottom tier was Victoria sponge, the middle tier was Biscoff flavour, and the top tier was caramel chocolate. It was all covered in white fondant and finished with a single hessian ribbon.
We also made our own kids table sign, welcome sign and photo booth sign.

h Country House was a starter Our wedding breakfast provided by Batc main and finished with a trio of of goats cheese, followed by a roast beef delicious desserts.
The venue supplied a photo booth, whic h we enjoyed all day, particularly the children who loved all the accessories. Later in the evening we had a DJ, Olly, who kept the mood going with fabulous song choices and got ever yone up and danc ing. Enhanced Entertainment supplied us with dry ice for the first danc e.
We were determined to have a big gam e of bingo, which we did following the speeches. Ever yone got involved and had a laugh with it. They all know we love a good game of bingo, or indeed any board games.
Our photographers Shutter Bliss’ Ciara and Roger were fantastic and so organised. Ciara was equipped with everything we might have needed, she was more than a photographer, and kept us on schedule, helping to settle nerves too. On top of all that, we have amazing photos and a video that makes me emotional every time I watch it.

CAKES
MAKE A STATEMENT “The trend seems, to me at least, to be couples opting for complete coverage cakes as opposed to the semi-naked look, which has been so huge in the cake world for a few years now,” says Bridget Essam from Baked by Bridget. Indeed, it’s the increasing demand for fondant-iced showstoppers that are creating an increased surge in more symbolic sweet centrepieces. Joanna from Joanna Pyda Cake Studio says, “Fondant cakes open up the possibility for a huge variety of techniques to be used through texture and decoration, which make creating superunique, personalised designs with wow factor reflecting you as a couple so much easier. Sugar flowers matching the bride’s bouquet will appear in many designs next year, as well as wafer paper textures and flowers. I’m so looking forward to creating all those gorgeous designs!”

Discover what’s hot for 2024 in the wonderful world of wedding cakes
Claire from Claire Hansen Cakes is on the same page: “Couples are using an image design-led approach to bring in those personalised elements to their big-day bake. The cake of mine pictured, for example, was inspired by vintage botanical journals and features an abstract, textured layering effect evoking pages from the books that inspired it. Movement of the fondant, layering of the pages and the textured ganache moss all combine to bring the whole theme together. Imagine the personalised possibilities you can create with your cake designer!”
“I’m seeing a focus on more modern, sculptural designs,” – Claire Hansen Cakes 47

AN OLD FAVOURITE “Semi-naked cakes have been extremely popular for several years now, and in 2024 it doesn’t seem likely we’ll see a change in that trend,” Joanna says. “I can understand the interest as these cakes look absolutely stunning dressed with fresh flowers provided by the florist, work beautifully at almost any venue and are great value for money, being the most budget-friendly style.”
MINIMALISM REIGNS Conversely, Bridget says, “I’m also finding more and more that couples are wanting to go for the minimalist look on a cake – the less-is-more approach. Think clean, white lines with a simple yet elegant feature. These are definitely topping the list of looks and styles at the moment.”
“There are two main styles I can see in next year’s enquiries: simple and elegant buttercream cakes or fondant covered designs with lots of handcrafted decoration.” – Joanna Pyda Cake Studio If you have in mind an extravagant six-tier showstopper but not the budget to go with it, there is a solution: floating tiers. Using spacers or false tiers the cake has the illusion of extra height without the price tag associated with a skyscraper. This is also a great solution if you’re looking to keep your big day as environmentally-conscious as possible. Of course, you’ll want to keep waste down, so you can simply opt for one cutting tier layered with clear Perspex or dummy tiers, which your cake maker can use again and again, so nothing wasted. When your cake is whisked away to be cut into portions, no one need be any the wiser! Another solution to this cake conundrum is... macarons! In 2024, we fully expect to see more incredible macaron towers. With more and more companies emerging who specialise in producing this particular kind of confectionery (such as Sussex-based www.instagram.com/eatons_mess) 48

TIERS OF JOY
Getty Images
Claire says, “Lots of traditional, vintage elements are coming back in with the resurgence in popularity of Lambeth cakes showing layer upon layer of various piping styles. These are great as you can choose to go with the sophisticated, traditional white or for a more quirky, playful approach by using contrasting colourful icing to bring in the fun elements of your big day.”

VINTAGE VIBES
Baked by Bridget
there are some super-creative options. With more flavours than you can shake a stick at and any colour palette you wish, these too can be personalised to match you day like a dream. Plus, bite-size and delicious there’s no mess and they’re easy for guests to grab on the way to the dancefloor. If you fear you’ll lament the loss of a cake-cutting ceremony, simply opt for a single cutting tier. Oh, and did we mention an alternative to macarons? One word: doughnuts!

CAKES
“I absolutely love wafer paper designs, there’s so much you can do in terms of shape and colour, this will definitely be included in my offering for next year.” – Baked by Bridget SHOW IT OFF In 2023 more and more couples began to appreciate the artistic value of their big-day bakes in forming an important centrepiece tying in with the styling of the whole day. From backdrops to frames and hoops, themefitting floral displays to balloon installations, we’ve loved them all. We think this trend will find a real foothold in 2024 meaning cakes are now so much more than a sweet treat to snack on in the evening.
Joanna is planning to expand her dessert table offer for 2024, recognising the rise in popularity of these. “My new favourite treat, the NYC-style cookie, a thick, chunky and full-of-goodies dessert, will undoubtedly become one of my bestselling sweet table additions,” she tells us. Another exciting product she’ll be offering from 2024 is the Bridesmaid’s Bento Cake. Beautifully packaged, these mini cake gifts for bridesmaids, will be delivered to the venue on the day of the wedding. Claire too has some more amazing sweet treat newness planned: “I recently launched a range of macarons and am already seeing a lot of interest for these delicious treats, they can be ordered in the form of a tower, alongside a cake or as favours for your guests,” she says.

EXPERT ADVICE
© Tasha Parker Photography
HOT TOPIC: Winter vibes
Our experts offer stellar advice on creating your own winter wonderland wedding BLOOMIN’ CHILLY
Megan Troughton from Megan Lily Floral Design (www.meganlilyfloraldesign.co.uk) says: You may be worried that you won’t have a lot of choice for your winter wedding when it comes to the flowers. But, as a florist I love creating designs at this time of year and there are plenty of varieties to choose from. It’s all about delicate detail, textural berries and seed heads, and foliage when it comes to winter florals. I truly believe it’s the beautiful, natural qualities of seasonal flowers that add a touch of magic to wedding designs. Gorgeous winter flowers include ranunculus, anemones, hellebore,
paper whites and heather. Plus, varieties such as roses, snapdragons and stocks are available all year round, and teamed with seasonal blooms create a beautiful wintry feel to your floral designs. It’s all about soft muted tones, beautiful white or deep dark reds at this time of year. Using colour is a wonderful way to add that winter look. Your floral designs are the perfect way to bring your chosen palette to all elements of your day; from your ceremony aisle, tables and cake, to your bouquets and buttonholes.
SNOW QUEEN Krystle Worgan from Krystle Brides (www.krystlebrides.co.uk) says: In the darker months of winter, we think creating a look that sparkles for a wedding is just perfect. Imagine how twinkly you’ll look with candlelight bouncing off the sparkle of the Hollywood-inspired Anniston Lane gown by Maggie Sottero! Available with an incredible detachable ruffled overskirt, this dress has a truly romantic feel with a sassy and shimmering fishtail gown underneath to surprise all of your evening guests. Style it with sleek hair, a smoky eye and a simple veil for a truly sophisticated winter wedding look. 51
WINTER WARMERS Florence Fillot from La Bonne Crepe (https://labonnecrepe.co.uk) says: We love the winter season and its heart-warming perks. We dress and brighten up our stall with winterthemed decorations and lights for festive weddings, and really dress up for the occasion! We also love to serve our seasonal menu specials such as cinnamon crepes, spiced ginger tea and mulled wine – delicious and warming.
ON PAPER Gaynor Page from Topikki (https://topikki.co.uk) says: Late December is the start of winter and weddings at this time are often referred to as a Christmas wedding. We must remember though that winter goes right through into March, so unless you really are looking for a festive wedding, here are a few ideas to steer away from that, while still giving your wedding stationery that elegant wintry twist. Your stationery is the first glimpse your loved ones will have of the the theme of your wedding, so creating stationery to reflect the season is a great way to let them know what to expect. Shimmering whites with hints of frosty blues or spruce/sage greens give a feel of countryside walks in the crisp frost. White on white or, ivory on ivory can also have an impactful presence. If you want to, add tartans or traditional Christmas colours, which can be integrated into floral themes such as ribbons or leaves for subtlety. This year, we see the ever-popular Kraft card making plenty of appearances. This can create a beautiful, rustic woodland or outdoor feel. Add greys, eucalyptus or cream to bring in your own personal elements. Your colours should reflect your personalities and wedding theme, but they could also reflect your venue, adding to the whole feel of your stationery.

WINTER WONDERLAND
52
Samantha Smart at Wedding Regency (www.weddingregency.com) says: Winter weddings are so different to any other, but they’re still as exciting to plan and organise. Plus, venues can often be cheaper to hire as it’s deemed to be out of season. My top tips for creating a wintry vibe include tailoring your menu. Soups for starters are perfect, lamb shanks for a main and a crumble for dessert are just so warming and comforting. Opt for warm colours for your theme. Using soft tones for your table setting is ideal. You could also add warm shawls for your bridesmaids to keep them nice and cosy. If your wedding is around Christmastime, why not add some mistletoe, mulled wine and have poinsettias as your centrepieces, along with warm lights and lanterns. Little touches, such as winter-themed wedding invitations and making blankets available for your guests can also give your wedding the wow factor.
EXPERT ADVICE SWEET TOOTH Mark Gibson from Yarlington Barn (www.yarlingtonbarn.co.uk) says: The traditional three-tier cake is still by far the most popular, but for a winter twist white, silver and gold are all timeless and elegant colour choices for your seasonal big-day bake. Use wintry textures and embellishments such as velvet, fur and metallic accents to bring a touch of luxury. You can also decorate it with wintry foliage, pine cones, or fir branches. Just be sure to check with your florist first which flowers or greenery are safe for use around food. At this time of year with the dark nights, why not use festive twinkly lights to bring a touch of magic to your cake table? Or how about some mini seasonal cupcakes instead? With a little planning, you can create an elegant wintry wedding cake and display for your venue that’ll be the sweet centrepiece of your special day.
A MAGICAL MENU Chef at Paxton & Brown Caterers (www.paxtonandbrown.co.uk) James Brown says: Winter weddings are a fabulous time for food lovers! There are endless options for you to choose from to create a magical winter menu, from hearty traditional fare to middle eastern-inspired dishes that warm guests from the inside out. Here are my signature dishes, perfect for a winter wedding. •Welcome drinks Spiced elderflower prosecco and warm mulled apple cider. •Canapés Fish’n’chip cones, rare roast beef Yorkshire pudding, mini Cornish pasties, and cherry tomato and lemon pesto bruschetta. •Starter Spiced beetroot, pomegranate, baby leek and gorgonzola salad with walnut dressing. •Main course Traditional beef Wellington with roasted root vegetables and Bordeaux jus. Alernatively, try sharing boards of butterflied shoulder of lamb marinated in our special aromatic rub of smoked ancho chillies, fresh oregano, smoked paprika and pink peppercorns accompanied by flavoursome warm salads such as roasted butternut squash with rocket, pine nuts, labneh and green breans with cumin, capers, red papper and fresh herbs served with Turkish flatbreads. •Dessert Cinnamon and nutmeg apple tart with cardamom Chantilly cream.
www.jamesandkerriephotography.co.uk
A WINTER’S TALE Jen Whitworth, otherwise known as Jen The Celebrant (https://jenthecelebrant.co.uk) says: Hot chocolate, snuggles under a blanket and open fires – what’s not to love about winter? And with a celebrant-led wedding you can create romantic wintry magical vibes for you ceremony too. Let your guests warm your wedding bands with good wishes, love and support for your new journey as a married couple. Plus, it’s never too early to hear a cheesy Christmas song, so why not walk in to your favourite one? You could even get your guests to sing along. Instead of everyone throwing confetti, how about they throw fake snow as you walk down the aisle, creating your very own snow scene? Candles always add romance, so including a Unity Candle ceremony is a perfect way to keep the warm wintry feel. What’s more, creating your own blend of mulled wine as part of a wine ceremony is very special. You could add your and your partner’s favourite wines and spices together. Loved ones will really enjoy toasting you both after the ceremony. Instead of a sand ceremony why not have a snow globe ceremony? Each taking it in turns to add the elements. Or, bind your love together with a hand-fasting ceremony using your scarves as your hand-fasting cords and celebrate your first kiss under the mistletoe. 53

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty
H
annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.
Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 68
There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.
INTERVIEW
How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.
What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin
The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 69
Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley
A
n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.
sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.
TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
TIMELESS STYLE I want to surprise by wife-to-be with a smart new look when she sees me at the end of the aisle. What would you recommend for my hair and beard on the big day?
Daniel Rymer from Daniel Rymer Hair (https://danielrymerhair.com) says: The key to a memorable appearance lies in embracing a classic and timeless style, ensuring every photograph reflects the best version of you. Amidst the flurry of weddingday preparations, prioritising a classic hairstyle that resonates with your personal identity is crucial. Whether you opt for a familiar, longer style or a shorter, sharper look, maintaining an authentic representation of yourself is paramount. Remember too that less is more when it comes to styling products; a modest application of texture spray or salt spray, coupled with a light touch of hairspray, will ensure a natural and lasting appearance throughout the day. In the realm of facial hair, the era of the clean-shaven look has passed. Embrace a well-groomed beard, delicately shaped with softer edges for more photogenic appeal. Grooming your beard to perfection is an essential element in achieving a polished overall look. Leading up to the big day, consider booking a grooming session with your groomsmen a week in advance. This not only provides an opportunity to refine your appearance but also allows time for any sharp edges or tan lines from recent grooming to soften, ensuring a seamlessly natural look on your special day. Plus, treating your groomsmen to a collective grooming session can serve as an excellent bonding experience before the festivities begin. It’s also crucial to establish a relationship with a trusted barber. well in advance. Communicate your wedding plans, preferences, and uncertainties to your barber, enabling them to provide tailored recommendations and explore new looks if desired. Remember, entrusting your wedding hair cut to an unfamiliar barber is a risk better avoided. SUITED AND BOOTED I’m not used to wearing suits on a day-to-day basis, so I don’t really know what to look for when it comes to finding one for my wedding day. Do you have any advice for me? Paul Cook from Deane & Sons (www.deanesofcheddar.co.uk) says: First and foremost, speak with your bride- or groom-to-be. You’ll both have ideas floating around, which is good as communication is key. Fashions or certain TV programmes can sway your choice but be certain 78

Beauty Grooms’ l a i c e p s Q&A:
before you make that leap. There may also be palettes to consider, will those hues work only with a particular-coloured suit? Will all the party look the same? Will you have a two-piece or three-piece with matching waistcoats? Choosing the right suit is equally as important as choosing the right dress. We always say that effort equals reward. This is a chance for you to present to one another on your big day and break out of your comfort zone. For most, it’s the one day you get to wear something you may not be used to. Almost every suit shop or formalwear hire shop can measure you – for me this is key. It will definitely help, even if it’s for off-the-peg suits. With so many options out there, it can be a minefield but try things on and speak with those who know suits, it really will help. HEALTH FIRST How can I ensure my skin is looking its best for the big day? Michelle Facey from Unfolding Space Studio (www.unfoldingspacestudio.com) says: Our skin is the biggest organ of the body. It not only protects, it works together with the lymphatic system to expel toxins where tension has built up. For the best skin results, I’d say there are five main key lifestyle changes prompting healthy skin for your big day. 1. Opting for a healthy diet. 2. Getting enough quality sleep. 3. Exercising. Just 10 to 15 minutes of cardio and stretching will keep the heart pumping and move that oxygenated blood throughout the body. 4. Adopting a good skincare routine. If you style a beard or moustache, using a good beard oil keeps a soft and supple condition, while a regular facial massage keeps circulation in and around the hair follicles, helping to stimulate hair growth. 5. Reducing stress. Stress is a key factor, so finding ways to de-stress such as meditation and breathing practices, as well as regular massage treatments, will all help to keep the body and mind in check on the run up to the big day. We offer the Buccal and Lymphatic Massage, which is a detoxifying and rejuvenating facial treatment to help with releasing tension in the shoulders, neck, face and head, followed by an intra oral massage, where the inside of the mouth, cheeks and jaw are gently and effectively massaged with gloves; creating space in these key areas allowing blood circulation to flow, finishing off with the lymphatic drainage techniques to dispel toxins from the face, neck and shoulders. I’d recommend a series of monthly treatments or bi-weekly dependant upon the date of your big event.

odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.
People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.
How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.
What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding
process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

Sitatunga Private Island is a new water-based safari camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Built on a raised, wrap-around private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate four adults in two private suites. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, the camp offers couples a ‘slow safari’ that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream
Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village
F
or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.
on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.
RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY
The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.
Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.
FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.
LOOKING FOR MORE?
Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.
For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.
DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my
