HEYTHROP HOTEL IN OXFORDSHIRE SET TO REOPEN AFTER INVESTMENT
A Chipping Norton venue is set to undergo a £40million investment after being acquired by a national leisure and hospitality group. Heythrop Park Resort was purchased by Bourne Leisure in 2018, building on its already impressive portfolio. It will now become the latest hotel for the Warner Leisure Hotels family, renowned for its adult-only breaks. Heythrop will be the fifteenth hotel in the Warner portfolio and is set to become the biggest and best. The multi-million-pound investment will transform the current space into a stunning country haven for those looking for a short break away without children. The transformation will see the creation of 337 bedrooms, allowing 18th-century opulence to meet modern luxury and retaining the property’s historic feel alongside a host of contemporary facilities. Guests can expect chic lounges, vibrant bars and outdoor terraces plus a ballroom theatre. Live music and exquisite dining will be provided across three restaurants. The grounds will provide acres of exploration for guests, who can spend their days strolling through parkland or enjoying scenic cycle routes. The hotel’s spa will house an indoor pool, a new thermal and sensory suite and beauty and wellness treatments. Warner will also be retaining the 18-hole Bainbridge Championship Course, which Heythrop is famous for. Taking to the helm as general manager, Dean Saunders joined the Warner family as a lifeguard at one of its coastal hotels and progressively worked his way up to managing the group’s flagship property, Studley Castle in Warwickshire. Bringing more than 30 years of experience to the
role, Dean’s main mission is to provide guests with the perfect place to unwind. Managing director of Warner Leisure Hotels, Simon Thompson, said, “We’re delighted to have acquired such an impressive property in what is a beautiful part of the UK. It’s our first property in Oxfordshire and is set to be our biggest and best - we look forward to bringing even more tourism to the area.” Dean Saunders added, “Heythrop brings together the best of both worlds – inside and out. Guests will have a unique sense of space here, with the option to explore, relax or be entertained without ever having to leave the stunning surroundings. When the opportunity to manage such an amazing place came up, I jumped at it. I can’t wait to greet new guests and begin our exciting journey here in the summer.” Heythrop Park is set to open this summer. The estate covers more than 440 acres of land and will be the largest Warner property to date. To book, visit www.warnerleisurehotels.co.uk 9

THE LUND COLLECTION LAUNCHES IN OXFORDSHIRE
Bergman Design House, the award-winning studio founded by Marie Soliman and Albin Berglund, is delighted to unveil The Lund Collection, launching in the Cotswolds this spring. The design-led, one-bedroom private cottage is located just a stone’s throw from Chipping Norton and Great Tew in Oxfordshire and provides an oasis of calm for couples, friends and solo travellers alike. Exquisitely decorated, it features a carefully-curated collection of original artwork and vintage treasures alongside new bespoke furniture from the studio’s Black Berg Collection. From 17thcentury Chinese ceramics and an 18th-century marriage armoire that turns into a showstopping drinks cabinet to a modern and luxurious deep-soaking bathtub, it’s a design-lovers dream. Marie Soliman, founder and creative director of Bergman Design House tells us, “What’s been so enjoyable about this project has been the treasure hunt for the most incredible antique and vintage finds, all of which tell their own unique story while highlighting the beauty of the newer items next to them.” In the process of creating The Lund Collection, Marie comments, “It’s an approach I like to call organised chaos; the creation of a space that’s both functional and timeless, with a playful hint of surprise or whimsical energy.” Inspired by the beauty of the Cotswolds, the property features a colour palette that reflects all four seasons, from the vibrant green of summer to the russet orange tones of autumn. The Lund Collection is Bergman Design House’s foray into a new line of luxury individual accommodations in the UK, providing the utmost privacy while offering the ultimate guest experience. Featuring a fully stocked bar, hand-curated welcome hamper and a state-of-the-art Swedish Moccamaster coffee machine, guests will arrive, immediately relax and feel at home. Creating and designing the property has been a passion project for Marie and Albin, and they hope it will be a sanctuary for future guests seeking an escape in the countryside. “We fell in love with this cottage and the stunning countryside. We’re so thrilled to share it with our guests. It’s intended to be a sanctuary for all who visit - we want our guests to come here and truly switch off, connect with nature and feel at home,” said Marie. Prices start from £595 per night including a welcome hamper with wines personally curated by Albin. To book, visit www.thelundcollection.com

BLENHEIM PALACE LAUNCHES NEW PODCAST SERIES AND IS SHORTLISTED FOR TOP TOURISM AWARD
Blenheim Palace has been shortlisted for the Beautiful South Awards for Excellence. The Oxfordshire UNESCO World Heritage Site is a finalist in the Access and Inclusive Tourism Award and the winner will be announced at a ceremony on the 25th of April. The Award recognises tourism businesses providing truly memorable visitor experiences for everyone, particularly those with accessibility requirements, and demonstrating excellence across every aspect of the business. In recent years, Blenheim Palace has introduced a series of initiatives designed to make its visitor experience more accessible. Examples include the creation of new touch tours for the visually impaired, sensory maps, accessible pathways and the introduction of Access Champions who work in visitor-facing roles on-site to promote accessibility and inclusiveness. A new Access Desk has also been introduced in the Palace’s main Visitor Centre where trained staff provide help and advice. During the lockdown, ticket sales moved entirely online. Blenheim’s Digital Team recognised the importance of creating a user-friendly interface for all visitors and built a website that achieved a 100% score on Google Lighthouse, which audits performance and accessibility. Head of operations Emily Spencer said, “We’re very pleased to have been shortlisted for this award as accessibility and inclusivity is something we take extremely seriously across the business. As a team, we still have a lot to learn and there are many areas where we can improve but it’s inspiring to see our efforts have been recognised by a panel of tourism experts.” Judging is carried out by an independent panel of past winners, industry leaders and experts in their field, selected for their impartiality, experience and suitability for each category. Overall winners will then be 14
entered into the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, which takes place in June. In other news at the venue, Blenheim Palace is launching a series of podcasts on Spotify. With topics ranging from hidden rooms inside Blenheim’s iconic grand bridge and the palace’s starring roles in a series of blockbuster movies to fashion and Winston Churchill, the 20-part series provides a fascinating insight into the Oxfordshire UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hosted by Blenheim’s social historian Antonia Keaney, the series also features interviews with comedian and TV presenter Sue Perkins, writer and broadcaster Hugo Vickers and author Josh Ireland. As well as the stories about the palace’s rich heritage and the cast of famous historical characters, Antonia also talks to current members of the team including Blenheim archivist Alexa Frost, head of operations Heather Carter, who describes the challenges and rewards of running a great estate, and award-winning travel photographer Pete Seaward. “We began providing online talks and virtual tours during the lockdown as a way for us to stay in touch with people who couldn’t visit in person,” said Antonia. “I was surprised and delighted with the positive feedback and so we decided to expand our offering and produce a series of podcasts. It has been lovely for me to be able to talk to such a diverse group of fascinating people who each have their unique connection to Blenheim and I hope others will enjoy the fascinating insights and stories their interviews reveal.” The series also features British journalist and politician Rachel Trethewey talking about her books on the children of Winston Churchill, Blenheim’s most famous son, an interview with historic textiles conservator Emma Telford on her work with the palace’s priceless 300-year-old tapestries and an insight into what life was really like at a great estate. All of the podcasts are available to download on Spotify. To find out more and to book, visit www.blenheimpalace.com

HAVE FUN WITH FITNESS
Heba Pilates is a local Buckinghamshire/Berkshire-based business that was founded to make machine-based pilates more accessible and to boost participation. Co-founded by local businesswoman Samantha Kellard, a pilates guru and expert, and Moritz Wuttke, it will be expanding into London and Sydney, Australia, later this year following the successful opening of its first three studios in Marlow, Windsor and Beaconsfield. Reformer Pilates is recommended for a range of reasons, from helping alleviate chronic pain to improving posture and health. It aims to do so with a new, state-of-the-art Reformer-type machine called the Nuforma which Samantha, who has 20 years of experience teaching pilates and ten years with her own pilates studios, developed in-house over the last few years. On hand in each studio are Heba pilates guides (who are fitness specialists) who will adjust the Nuforma sessions ensuring every user makes good progress. The Nuforma has a monitor screen so that users can choose their own pre-recorded guided session, plus an app making suggestions based on experience, expertise and achievement. Sessions are booked via the app so that each user can secure their own space in advance. Samantha tells us, “Pilates is the foundation of my life, it’s what you need to do to stand up tall, move around, be confident and function in the modern world. Heba Pilates was born to make it easy for people to make pilates part of their lives and get the benefit. REGIONAL VENUES
Spotlight on...
WEST BERKSHIRE AND NEWBURY From tipis to stretch tents, we reveal where to wed
THE GREAT HOUSE SONNING Coppa Club’s Sonning-On-Thames boutique hotel, home to 49 bedrooms, was the first Coppa Club property to open its doors six years ago. It’s home to a café, bar, restaurant and lounge with an informal, relaxed private members club feel without the fees. Sister properties in the three regions include those in Henley-On-Thames, Maidenhead and Streatley-on-Thames. It’s an ideal location for a wedding with beautifully designed party spaces that can host ceremonies for up to 120 guests overlooking the gardens and river. Couples wanting a church wedding can do so in one of the nearby villages and then head back to the hotel for the celebrations. The Private Dining room is a light-filled space that can seat up to 120 guests for the wedding breakfast and hold up to 200 party-goers for the evening reception. The room is also adaptable for a more intimate celebration, and a selection of other private rooms are also on offer, accommodating between 10 and 120 loved ones. These spaces are also the perfect spot for a pre-wedding family dinner or a morning-after breakfast. The Coppa Club chefs have created a collection of menus for the wedding breakfast with a fresh, modern approach and a complimentary tasting is included in the wedding packages. Coppa has also launched the Healthy Specials menu (available until spring). It’s dedicated to supporting guests with a conscious dining experience allowing them to eat as well, if not better than they would in their own home. At each property, a specialised menu accompanies the standard à la carte one featuring nutritious options that benefit the body and mind. The Healthy Specials menu includes multiple vegan options such as nourishing chia seed pods complemented with coconut, maple and vanilla; vegetarian
dishes including spiced-roasted cauliflower and poached chicken salads. Alongside Coppa’s new Healthy Specials menu is a choice of no and low-alcohol cocktails including the Sanguinello Spritz, a delicious combination of Crossip Pure Hibiscus, Fever-Tree blood orange soda, rosemary and a citrus twist. Ceremony licence? Yes Contact: 0118 969 2277, www.greathouseatsonning.co.uk ❤ We love... that couples can arrive at their wedding their way! Why not sail up to the hotel, arrive in a vintage car or take a stroll from the bedroom after spending the night there?
ANOTHER OPTION Following a recent £50million redevelopment, Newbury Racecourse’s outdoor venue is a magical setting where ceremonies take place in the Parade Ring as well as in The Winners Enclosure. There’s also a Royal Box that has been refurbished with period features, a variety of event spaces hosting between 40 and 550 guests, an area for a large marquee, on-site catering facilities, car parking for more than 3,000 vehicles plus a complimentary room for the newlyweds at The Lodge hotel. Ceremony licence? Yes Contact: 01635 897 925, https://weddings.newburyracecourse.co.uk ❤ We love... that while the venue offers a range of wedding packages, they are also flexible and happy to discuss each couple’s requirements. 23
Ceremonies conducted by an independent celebrant, or blessings, can take place inside or outside, and the talented team at Forest Edge Tipis can erect a separate one for the ceremony if required. Receptions take place inside the tipis with guest numbers ranging from 30 to 250. Ceremony licence? No Contact: 07917 792 941, www.forestedgetipis.com ❤ We love... that bespoke packages can be created to suit each couple’s requirements and these packages include the hire of rustic-stye furniture, generators, luxury toilets and even bell tents for the first-night stay and guest accommodation. There’s also the choice of bed and breakfast accommodation and serviced cottages at some of the venues.
ANOTHER OPTION Donnington Grove hotel in Newbury is set in 500 acres of countryside just one mile from the town centre. It’s accessed via a winding driveway leading to the manor house, boasting Strawberry Hill Gothic architecture, named after Horace Warpole who had Strawberry Hill in London created for him. The main house and venue rooms were built more than 250 years ago and are home to period features including chandeliers and original hand-painted wallpaper. Think of it as a period property with modern amenities and high standards of service. Landscaped grounds surround the hotel, with a full PGA championship golf course running through the middle, offering a variety of photographic opportunities including a folly and lake. Ceremonies take place in the Cloudy Room for up to 75 loved ones. The Kennet can seat up to 80 guests for a ceremony and the Avon room accommodates an intimate 30 people. The Japanese pagoda offers another option, seating up to 30 guests. Receptions take place in the marquee for up to 120 people or in one of
the venue rooms depending on the couple’s requirements. Ceremony licence? Yes Contact: 01635 581 000, www.donnington-grove.com ❤ We love... that the team offer the couple a complimentary stay on the night of the wedding and the first anniversary, plus we also offer a free tasting menu.

FOREST EDGE TIPIS, NEWBURY This family-run wedding and events company offers the opportunity for ceremonies and receptions to take place in an authentic Nordic tipi, hand-crafted in Sweden and sustainably sourced. There’s a choice of exclusive-use venues, from wildflower meadows, ancient woodlands and even organic sustainable farms, and the unique design of these structures provide a blank canvas to be styled for an intimate micro wedding, with one long table in the middle or larger celebrations with a festival vibe. laudia and William first dated in school when they are 16 years old. “Our teenage love didn’t last and we went our separate ways but continued to share a group of friends who were adamant that we should get back together,” Claudia tells us. “Twelve years later, Will reached out again and fast forward nine months, we were engaged!” The couple became engaged during a romantic beach proposal. “Will treated me to a barbecue on a quiet beach near Fowey in Cornwall,” Claudia says. “He rustled up a delicious meal and it ended with a proposal which was perfect!”
SETTING THE SCENE Like many couples, Claudia and Will had an entirely different wedding day planned before the pandemic struck which was going to be a marquee celebration in a field with 150 guests. “The restrictions put in place meant that a few months before our wedding, we decided to alter our plans to have a small, intimate day that we were confident would go ahead,” Claudia explains. “Our requirements while searching for the perfect venue were that it had beautiful surroundings and offered amazing food. We had previously visited The Feathered Nest Country Inn and remember it exceeding our expectations in both of these so it became the perfect choice.” In keeping with the couple’s minimalistic theme, they decided not to have too much decoration on the tables. “Our florist created a simple foliage runner which we paired with place cards that were personalised with each guests’ menu choice and featured a flower and wax stamp of our initials,” Claudia says. “Will and I treated each guest to a small bottle of our homemade sloe gin as favours. The beauty of having an intimate wedding was that we didn’t have to worry about a

table plan because all four tables were placed together on the terrace and it felt great for everyone to be sat together.” The couple’s florist, Charlotte from Blooms by Charlotte understood their natural, timeless theme so dotted arrangements of foliage on the terrace and steps where the couple took their vows. “We didn’t want to go overboard and it was just perfect,” Charlotte says. “Will made the confetti from his crop of viola which added a personal touch and instead of having a traditional cake, we chose a tower of our favourite cheeses and worked closely with the talented team at the venue to provide an outstanding menu for our guests. Everyone commented how delicious the food was and some of them even said it was the best wedding meal they had ever had!”
LOOKING THE PART Claudia chose a simple, elegant jumpsuit that she teamed with a pair of blue mules, a pearl bag and a pair of pearl earrings. “Will picked a tailored threepiece suit and looked so handsome!” Claudia tells us.
TIME TO CELEBRATE “Will is a big jazz lover so there wasn’t any doubt that we would treat our guests to a few hours of live jazz between the ceremony and dinner, creating a romantic, intimate atmosphere,” Claudia says. “We ended dinner with a round of our favourite shots which everyone loved!” 35

Becs and Mike chose the stunning Rackleys Chiltern Hills, a new venue located in Buckinghamshire, for their special day Images courtesy of Suzy Elizabeth Photography
Rebecca (known as Becs) and Michael Byard (known as Mike) married on Nov 5th 2021 at Rackleys Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.
B
ecs and Michael met aged just 17 and were friends for almost ten years before becoming a couple. “Mike asked me to marry him while we were on holiday in Santorini in July 2018,” Becs tells us, “It was so romantic.” The couple chose the stunning Rackleys Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire in which to marry. “We viewed the venue in December 2020 before the renovations were finished and loved the mix of a traditional brick barn with modern touches. None of the landscaping had been completed at this point so we needed to use our imagination,” the couple explain. “Because we live local to the venue, it was lovely to be able to pop by for visits throughout the year and see the progress being made. Some of our friends had married
locally so we were excited to get married in a venue that was new to the area and would be new to our loved ones, too.” On meeting Carol and Nick at Rackleys Chiltern Hills, the couple was confident that, because of the very high level of care and attention they had put into the renovations, plenty of thought had also been given as to how the venue would operate for weddings. “When we viewed the venue, it felt as though they had considered everything and that gave us a real sense of confidence in the remaining refurbishment and the approach they would take to our wedding,” Becs says. Here, Becs tells us all about their special day that combined timeless white flowers with a cake made by her mum and input from the couple’s friends. 39

atherine and Tamsin were introduced at a mutual friend’s drinks in London. “We instantly clicked,” the couple tell us. “I was attracted to Tamsin’s great sense of humour and cheeky smile and little did she know but I had fancied her for some time before the drinks!” Cat says. “I loved Cat’s banter and love for life,” Tamsin adds. The couple became engaged after two-and-a-half years together. “Tamsin asked me to marry her at sunset on Durdle Door beach in Dorset, with the proposal engraved into a specially-made pebble,” Catherine tells us. “She had a little help from our Labrador, Hendricks and even though we both knew that we wanted to get married, it came as a wonderful surprise!”
SETTING THE SCENE Catherine and Tamsin chose Ardington House as their wedding venue. “It’s a stunning building with manicured grounds within walking distance to where we live,” the couple explains. “We regularly walk Hendricks in the grounds so “All of our suppliers we couldn’t think of anywhere more fitting to get married.” The couple held were fantastic, we can’t their ceremony there, as well as their recommend them enough. reception and had a surprise for their guests. “We’re so glad that we had an Our hairdresser, Amie owl ring bearer called Juliet who flew and make-up artist, Jade down the aisle holding our rings,” they deserve huge praise not tell us. “It added something special to our ceremony!” only for keeping us calm The couple chose a pink, cream during our wedding and navy colour theme to decorate their special day. After our wedding, some sent us photographs of these hanging in their houses and even decorating their Christmas tree!” Starlit drapes and chandeliers were suspended from the ceiling of the venue which set the scene for the evening reception. “We wanted our cake to make a statement in keeping with the venue and our wedding theme – it also had to feed more than 200 guests!” Catherine and Tamsin tell us. “We chose a design of five layers with different flavours including lemon drizzle, a Mars bar tier and vanilla with passionfruit curd because we love passionfruit martinis! The cake featured a cascade of pretty handmade sugar flowers 46
REAL WEDDINGS that complemented our real ones.” The couple decided on a delicious three-course wedding breakfast of potted ham hock to start, beef as the main course and individual pavlovas with whipped vanilla bean cream, summer berries, strawberry sauce and chocolate straw (chosen as a nod to Tamsin’s favourite pudding made by her nan) as dessert.
LOOKING THE PART Catherine and Tamsin chose dresses that complemented each other. “We both knew that we had different styles in mind and the team at our boutique helped us pick designs that worked well together without us having a clue what each other had chosen,” they tell us. Catherine and Tamsin’s adult bridesmaids wore navy maxi multi-way dresses and their flowergirls wore pretty pink corsage dresses teamed with Grecian sandals. “Our joint best man and fathers wore navy suits with blushpink ties, matching pink pocket squares and pink rose buttonholes,” they say.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Catherine and Tamsin provided plenty of entertainment for their guests, starting with a string quartet who greeted them with live music, a bird of prey stand where their loved ones could meet and hold several birds during the reception drinks and a magician that everyone was mesmerised by! “During our wedding breakfast, we hired surprise singing waiters who got everyone up singing and dancing and doing the conga line!” Tamsin tells us. “We also hired a photo booth that also helped create our fun guest book. Our chosen DJ played a great selection of hits throughout the night and seeing Cat’s grandmother dancing all evening at the age of 87 was a highlight, especially to Mr Brightside by the Killers! The confetti cannon during our first dance was magical and Cat was even lifted Dirty Dancing-style during the song (I’ve Had) The Time of My Life by some of our rugby-loving friends! We gave everyone pick ‘n’ mix sweets to keep their energy levels up and the children were particular fans of these - some even going home with three or four bags!”
“Our wedding planner, as well as our photographers and videographer, made sure that everything ran to plan. Our glasses were always full and our guests were well looked after whilst we were enjoying having our couple portraits taken.” – Catherine and Tamsin 47
TOP TIP: “Have somebody who isn’t part of the bridal party responsible for ensuring all suppliers arrive on the day. We were lucky enough to have an events manager, Charlotte from Fingers & Forks Catering Events who made sure we didn’t need to worry about anything on the day.” – Catherine and Tamsin

FLOWERS
DARLING Large or small, statement floral installations and arrangements have never looked so pretty
What ’s new? C
ongratulations to Berkshire-based independent florist, Sonning Flowers who won the Wedding Florist of the Year award at this year’s prestigious National Wedding Industry Awards. This news comes after the florist was crowned top of its class in the regional heat, taking home Wedding Florist of the Year for the South Central of England. Heather Reilly, owner of Sonning Flowers tells us, “We are absolutely delighted and just can’t believe it! It’s the icing on the cake after winning Best Florist in Berkshire at the Muddy Stilettos Awards for 2021. We never dreamed of winning another award six months later.” She continues, “A huge thank you to all our wonderful wedding couples who voted for us and provided generous and incredible feedback about their wedding flowers and service we provided. It’s been a whirlwind for our whole industry, and the support we have received has been truly amazing.” Feedback from voters applauded Sonning Flowers’ flexibility, creativity, faultless communication, expert knowledge and exemplary IVY CRUZ, a Reading-based floral design studio specialises in turning faux flowers into elaborate life-like arrangements for weddings, providing customers with durable and long-lasting floral installations. The studio offers an in-house design service and their Insta-worthy displays include their take on the traditional flower wall. The talented team proudly create all of their floral arrangements in their studio, from custom-built or repurposed trees to floral ceiling installations, planters, walls and arrangements. It's a sustainable decision in choosing to produce their products in the UK and director Ioana Caciun tells us, "Over the last few years it has become apparent how important buying 'Made in the UK' is, from the obvious benefits of superior quality, easier communication, and creating much-needed employment, to reducing the carbon footprint and purchasing smaller quantities which in turn will create less waste.” Let’s chat: 01284 245 700, www.ivycruzflowers.com; www.facebook.com/ IvyCruzltd; www.instagram.com/ivycruzltd

We’ve had back-to-back weddings since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted and my small team of seven have worked incredibly hard during a wedding season like no other. Winning three renowned awards in the last six months is a great kick-start to 2022, and we look forward to the wonderful weddings we have coming up. BODY BEAUTIFUL Meet the expert: Dr Bob Khanna’s clinic, the Dr BK Clinic based in Reading, Berkshire offers body contouring and is the first in the UK to have access to the Tshape2 and B-Force machines that both offer incredible results. I’m considering having body contouring before my wedding and honeymoon – what does it involve? Dr Khanna says: Body contouring is the fastest growing treatment for non-surgical procedures aimed at helping to improve muscle tone, shape areas of the body, improve the contour of the skin and tighten it. Body contouring is very useful in addressing specific areas of the body including the inner and outer thighs, arms, back, belly and buttocks. The TShape2 machine is currently the most advanced body contouring system in the world. It performs body shaping treatments using a combination of low-power lasers, multi-polar radio frequency, endodermic massage and micro-vibration. This combination of technologies targets the skin and fat, helping smooth irregularities on the skin and increase lymphatic drainage. B-Force is another recent breakthrough in body contouring via technology designed to strengthen and tone muscles by stimulating muscle contractions on a level that was not achievable before using high-intensity electromagnetic field technology. BForce will create an average of 36,000 strong contractions of the muscle fibres which is the equivalent of 30-minutes of exercise and 36,000 sit-ups. This heightened stress forces the muscles to become stronger and
more toned. Body contouring treatments provide long-lasting results when managed with a good diet and exercise. There’s a recommended minimum of six sessions of each machine doing a session per week, but this could be up to twelve for optimal results. There is no downtime aside from the treatment areas feeling a little tender, and results will be seen immediately. Before starting a course of body contouring treatment, clients must book in for a consultation and full assessment. Treatments range from £250 to £500 per session depending on the areas being treated. Dr BK Clinic | 01182 300 354 | www.drbk.co.uk www.instagram.com/drbktheclinic 63

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got
engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.
BRIDE’S DIARY
VENUE
PHOTOGRAPHER
❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.
❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.
FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.
WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 65

JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES
PUT A RING ON IT
Sparkling jewellery from some of the finest local jewellers WITH THIS RING We catch up with the team at Buckinghamshire-based Alicia J Diamonds where couples can buy beautiful bespoke jewellery with a personalised experience guiding them through options to suit their budget for a treasured piece of high-end jewellery to last a lifetime. We’re newly engaged and want to purchase a bespoke engagement ring that’s personal to us as a couple - what can you suggest? They tell us, “There are so many ways to make your ring reflect your personal love story. Engravings are the simplest way to add meaning to your design. It could be a special date, phrase, symbol, word or the coordinates of your favourite romantic location. It’s lovely to have something that only you two understand the meaning of. It can be on the inside or outside of the band as a reminder of your love, every time you see the ring. Setting small hidden birthstones on the inside of the band is another wonderful way to add that personal touch. Or choose a gemstone that holds meaning in your relationship, to forever show the love and attention
that went into designing your bespoke engagement ring. The main design can reflect something personal, too. It could be a copy of a family ring or include gemstones, for example, a trilogy ring with a central diamond and a birthstone on either side. Designing a bespoke engagement ring is an exciting time. At Alicia J Diamonds, we know that every love story is unique, so we agree that your engagement ring should reflect that individuality. Our engagement rings are bespoke, made to order and symbolise each couple’s story. The Alicia J Diamonds team are all trained GIA (Gemological Institute of America) specialists, and source the best stones, without the high street markup. Being an eco-conscious brand, sustainability is an integral part of the Alicia J Diamonds ethos. All the diamonds and gemstones are sourced from reputable mines in conflict-free zones. Each customer will learn about diamond carat, clarity, cut and colour, as well as finding the perfect gemstone shape, setting options and design to create their dream piece of jewellery, at the right price.” Alicia J Diamonds | 0333 987 4985 | www.aliciajdiamonds.com www.facebook.com/aliciajdiamonds www.instagram.com/aliciajdiamonds

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! Just use as normal and instead of throwing them away when they become too small to use, flip them around, stick the end into a pot of damp soil and ta-da – beautiful, bee-friendly wildflowers will start to sprout within 1-2 weeks. Check out www.sproutworld.com
CHILLED-OUT SKIN
Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Have the ravages of winter left your skin dry, dull, sensitive, flaky and tight? As we embrace the spring, get your glow back with Q+A Snow Algae Intensive Face Cream (£12). If, like me, you’re reaching for Google, allow me to explain. Snow algae, also known as watermelon snow, is a species of green algae containing astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant great at improving dryness, sun damage and protecting against free radicals. I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and my dry skin is already showing signs of improvement. Find it at www.qandaskin.com

DREAMY DRESSES What’s popular in the world of wedding dresses for summer? I’m searching for a fashionable gown!
Meet the expert: Kate Norris is the owner of Queen Bee Bridal, a wedding dress boutique located in the beautiful riverside hamlet of Mapledurham Village in Oxfordshire (on the Berkshire borders.) Specialising in pre-loved and designer off-the-peg wedding dresses, they’re also the official stockist of Lillian West dresses and prices start from £850 up to £1,800.
Meet the expert: Rasha Kashou is a bridal designer based in Oxfordshire. She is a supporter of local and national suppliers and small businesses which is where she buys her quality silk and lace. Rasha says: I’ve always championed individuality and everyone I work with is so unique. Each bride deserves to wear a piece that fits them perfectly on their wedding day and I love creating looks that feature the wearer’s personality – that’s the beauty of couture. My latest Mai Collection depicts its cool, elegant and stylish wearer by allowing their confidence to shine through. The effortless and understated designs offer something very individual, from a fun knee-length sequin number worn over a skin tonal slip dress matched to the bride’s own skin tone, to a two-piece trouser look and a flattering off-the-shoulder dress.
Kate says: Take your pick from our stylish selection of new-toorder Lillian West gowns that Queen Bee Bridal now offers. Think romantic appliqué, delicate off-the-shoulder straps, boned lace bodies, spaghetti straps and illusion necklines teamed with sheer illusion sleeves and you get the idea of some of the key bridal trends for this summer. It’s worth considering a designer dress that’s been worn once, or a sample because some of the trends are timeless so you get to revamp them at a fraction of the cost! We invite customers to sell a dress with us as long as it’s less than two years old and the original recommended retail price was more than £1,600. We also sell a large range of new veils, jewellery, hair accessories and lace boleros, plus we’re an official stockist of Rainbow Club shoes who offer a full shoe dying service.

SKINCARE SUPERHEROES Serums are the skincare essentials of the 20s, especially if you’re on the quest for a radiant big-day complexion WISHFUL THIRST TRAP JUICE SERUM £41 (30ml), www.feelunique.com “The first thing to make me smile about this serum was its fresh scent, I could pick out the rose and aloe vera notes instantly. The second was the ease of application as it glided on smoothly. This mix of hyaluronic acid with firming peptides has benefited my skin, which is glowing and more hydrated.” – Claire Ridley
GLOW RECIPE GUAVA VITAMIN C DARK SPOT SERUM £41 (30ml), www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This super serum had me hooked from the moment I picked up its 100 per cent recyclable packaging and shelfworthy pink bottle. It doesn’t claim to be a miracle worker but my mature skin soaked it up without leaving a trace and although I can’t report that my dark spots have disappeared, it has certainly made a difference. My skin already appears more even with a healthier glow so I’ll definitely be sticking with it!”– Sarah Reeve ROC MULTI CORREXION HYDRATE + PLUMP SERUM CAPSULES £35.99 for 30, www.feelunique.com “Using one serum capsule every night for a week so far has made my skin feel soft and smooth.
