elcome to the first Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding magazine for 2022, and may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year. For those of you tying the knot this year, January 1st will have marked a significant milestone as you draw ever closer to the big day. How’s your planning going? If you find you’ve got a little bit of extra budget for those amazing finishing touches, you won’t want to miss one page as there’s inspiration aplenty as always. As you know, I’m going to be a bridesmaid for my friend and fellow CWM editor, Melissa, in July and it’s taken her this long to talk her other half Dave into booking a photo booth! This was actually thanks to another of our gorgeous colleagues, social media coordinator Beth who hired one for her big day, and we were barely out of it all evening! So, these super-cool elements are well worth looking into if you can. The other thing I’ve learned since I last spoke to you is on the topic of shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses. Speaking from experience I can tell you that for your best gals, choosing that perfect dress for the big day could be almost, if not equally, as important to them as finding yours was to you. You’ve asked them to be part of this enormous occasion in your life and in all likelihood, they’ll want to give the best account of themselves as they support you. So, inspired by the unbelievably patient and all-round diamond Melissa, my advice is this: be kind. Perhaps they’ve got body confidence issues, perhaps they’re feeling the pressure – don’t leave it to the last minute, allow them as much time as possible to make their decision. You love your bride tribe, that’s why you asked them to be by your side. If you want them to feel comfortable and enjoy the day alongside you, helping them to feel their big-day best too will go a long way towards that. Oh, and don’t forget to have bags of fun along the way! That’s all from me this issue, except to extend a very warm welcome to those of you who said “yes” over the festive period and are new to Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding. The owners of Soughton Hall in Sychdyn near Mold have invested £300,000 to open an exciting new wedding and events venue on the the 10-acre estate. The conversion of the Grade II listed coach house and stables has been a labour of love for managing director James Ramsbottom who says, “The Coach House was an amazing piece of bricks and mortar that was sat here doing nothing, having been operated as a restaurant by the previous owners. It was a waste to have a Grade II listed building without a real purpose, but now we’ve put that right. We’ve breathed new life into it, while retaining many of the original features. The Coach House is now available and we have already started accepting bookings. It will work well alongside the Hall since it offers something different, but equally special in its own

Locally, NHS Charities Together has helped the Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity, which supports the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust by providing funding for state-of-the-art equipment and new facilities, as well as East Cheshire NHS Trust Charitable Fund, which supports Macclesfield District General, Congleton War Memorial Hospital and Knutsford and District Hospital. In 2015, Gemma Wakerley took the decision to reduce the environmental impact of her business, Booker Flowers and Gifts. At the time it was quite a radical move given the green agenda we take for granted today was still in its infancy. Fast forward to 2022 and her business in Mossley Hill is the proud recipient of the Environmental and Climate award in the Liverpool Chamber Innovation in Business Awards. In the beginning, there wasn’t as much information available, so it was a steep learning curve, but we persevered, and step by step we’ve made great progress. teph and Pete both felt an instant attraction when they met at work. Steph remembers, “Pete had to conduct my induction, and neither of us concentrated much!” Two months later, the pair started dating and have been together ever since. Pete proposed on New Year’s Eve 2019. The duo were spending the night at their best friend’s house as they do every year, and as the clock struck midnight, Pete popped the question. Not only was it complete surprise for Steph, but even their assembled friends had no idea of his plan. Steph tells us of their venue search: “We wanted our wedding to be all about having all of the people we love all together in one place. A lot of venues we looked at seemed more concerned about timings though. Formby Hall was relaxed and allowed us to have the day we wanted, rather than the one that’s expected.” Read on as the bride shares her memories of the big day, 26th June 2021...

SETTING THE SCENE Having settled on a gorgeous sage green palette, Steph and Pete made sure that every element from the handwritten place names to the elegant flowers coordinated beautifully. Even the wedding favours tied in. Steph says, “Pete works in horticulture so succulents seemed fitting and they were so cute.” Initially, they decided against a table plan, but due to Covid guidelines they ultimately needed to implement one. Guest numbers were restricted to six per table, so the task was challenging but they succeeded admirably. The bridesmaids’ bouquets acted as the centrepieces for some of the tables and the others were decorated with trees, all of which suited the natural theme perfectly. The reception space exuded a sense of romance and magic with fairylights twinkling away and candles flickering. The couple enlisted their favourite cake maker for the big-day bake. “We were more excited about eating it than bothered about what it looked like, but she did an incredible job,” Steph explains. It was a simple two-tier cake draped with flowers. Before the cake was cut though, guests feasted on a barbecue – “It was really relaxed and tasted amazing,” Steph recalls.

LOOKING THE PART Although Steph was very much wanting to feel like a princess for the day she wasn’t looking for a strapless or fitted dress. Happily she succeeded in her quest and found a gorgeous gown that sparkled in the light and made her feel every bit as royal as she’d hoped. Pete wore a navy suit, which he accessorised with a palette-matching sage green tie. His groomsmen wore the same, the only difference being the buttonholes, ensuring the groom stood out. The bridesmaids too were dressed to coordinate in sage green dresses, and each chose their own individual style.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Despite being hindered in the entertainment department with pandemic restrictions still in place at the time, everyone was just delighted to be in the same place together. They were able to have music and dance outside, and thankfully the weather was kind. The brides says, “We were so thankful that our day was able to go ahead on the date we originally planned. We’d seen so many have to cancel. All we wanted was to be married, so we made the decision to go ahead even it if meant it’d be just the two of us. But thankfully, we got to have all of our loved ones with us, which made the whole day even more special.” The ceremony was the standout moment for Steph and the registrar had a great sense of humour instantly putting the pair at ease. The heartfelt words expressed on the day are also something they’ll never forget. Steph remembers: “My best friend gave a speech, which made me cry, then my young son gave a impromptu speech during the reception and had the whole venue in tears! It was unexpected and an amazing surprise.” The couple are particularly grateful to their venue dresser and bridesmaid dress supplier. “Nothing was too much trouble for her.”

ewis met Kathryn on her high school leaving day. They went to different schools, but most of his friends went to hers, so he joined them for the celebrations there. Lew tells us, “Someone told me a girl in red jeans liked me, so I added her to MSN and we got talking.” Good old MSN, those were the days! Fast forward a decade to the couple’s 10-year anniversary and Lew had something very special planned to surprise Kat. From the ceiling, he’d hung pictures of them both throughout the years. They all had messages on the back talking about how in 10 years he’d never bought her flowers and that he hoped what she saw when she reached the end of the picture trail would make up for it. As Kat opened the door, there was Lew on one knee surrounded by all the flowers he could buy. Naturally, Kat said “yes,” so join us now as the groom Lew, tells us more about the big day... 33

I was completely chilled out until the ceremony, during which I felt quite anxious. Once we were married though, I felt so happy and relaxed again. I really enjoyed the whole day.

Colshaw Hall is surrounded by beautiful grounds. The ceremony room gives a modern barn vibe, which is just what Kat wanted. The venue itself is stunning and ticked every box for us when we visited on its open day.

Kat said that she felt excited all morning and couldn’t wait to get into the ceremony room. Unlike me she wasn’t nervous at all and told me she had the most incredible day of her life! It was definitely worth the wait after two postponements due to Covid. I wore a black tuxedo altered for a slimmer fit with a black shirt and black bow tie.

Kat wore a Blue by Enzoni gown. She chose it as it gave her body confidence. It featured various layers of lace, one of which reminded her of her nan’s wedding dress. 34

My groomsmen wore the same apart from their shirts, which were white, allowing me to stand out as the groom.

The flower arrangements featured vandella roses, white roses, sweet avalanche bombastic meta roses, eucalyptus, hydrangea and delphinium.

Kat’s bridesmaids were dressed in one-shoulder, blush satin, floorlength gowns. Our floral centrepieces were surrounded by white tea lights, white cathedral candles and tapered candles in cut-glass holders.

Kat is a neonatal nurse at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, so as wedding favours we made a per-person donation to the Hospital. We gave each guest a note to let them know, along with a LWH badge.

During the day we had lawn games scattered across the grass for the children (and adults) to enjoy. In the evening, live band The Rolling Keys played, and we had a photo booth set up. Spending the whole night dancing with our guests was a real highlight.

Kat created a flower wall which we used as a backdrop for our photo booth.

When you’re planning, try not to get stressed out by the little things. After rearranging our wedding three times, we just learned to roll with it. Eventually, it all comes together and the day will always go as you plan it.

Instead of a big tiered cake, we just had one tier and then ordered 350 cookies and arranged them into a tower.

here was an instant attraction when Karen met Phil on an internet dating site. “I had butterflies when I messaged him,” she remembers. Phil proposed one gorgeous day in April at the Lion Quays Hotel & Spa in Shropshire. He’d asked for a room with a bath when he booked and they ended up in the bridal suite, which was quite the twist of fate given the staff had no idea of Phil’s plans! When the pair started their venue search the ceremony spot was an easy choice – the church where both sets of parents tied the knot and where Phil was christened. When it came to the reception venue however, they looked at a lot before they found Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa. Karen explains, “When we saw the Cristal Suite we both fell in love with it and knew it would be perfect. The chandeliers make the room look stunning.” Read on as the bride shares more memories of the big day, 28th August, 2021...

waistcoat and a tie to match my Phil wore a blue suit with an ivory patterned but they accessorised theirs with silver dress. His groomsmen also wore blue suits, patterned waistcoats and navy ties.

The church bells rang out for us after our ceremony, which is something I’ll always remember. Our viol inist and pianist who played for the service also made it truly spec ial.

I wore an Essense of Australia gown from a designer weekend at Belissima Brides. I chose it to show off my figure, I felt amazing in it. I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil with pearls, which tied in with the dress as well as my necklace, earrings and tiara.

My bridesmaids wore dresses in navy and rose gold and the flowergirl wore an ivory dress with navy sash.

Floral displays featured quicksand roses to complement the rose gold, ivory and green theme. I cried when I saw the wedding flowers, they were so beautiful. My bouquet had a memory charm attached to it with a picture of my grandparents.

For our wedding breakfast we enjoyed a starter of poached egg and asparagus, followed by a chicken main course and a trio of desserts.

hoot coordinator Natalie Burrows of Jellypress set out to create a minimalist, modern affair, with beautiful romantic influences. With the model couple being the epitome of young love, she wanted to show various facets of their partnership – the soft, romantic side, as well as their youthful, fun-loving nature. Originally due to take place in the spring of 2021, the project was postponed due to Covid. But, Natalie says, “Like many of life’s obstacles, it all worked out for the best. We had a glorious day where we were able to take full advantage of the venue’s beautiful terrace and emulate an al fresco style event.”

ave you ever stood in front of a mirror and truly looked at the reflection staring back at you? In the same way, if your wedding were a looking glass would it reflect your true personalities? This collection of North Wales-based wedding suppliers came together to demonstrate how those who dare to be different can create something magical for their big day. Shoot coordinator Sarah Hudson from Scent With Love Flowers tells us, “I wanted to bring my vision to life allowing couples to see just how beautiful their day can be, when they decide to go against the norm.

The team and I all wanted to create something a little different and inspire future couples to be brave and step outside the box.” The flowers she chose emphasise the emotions, depth and romanticism the team were aiming to encapsulate, which also highlights the alternative mirror image of how things can be seen from two different perspectives. This is further demonstrated through the use of two identical wedding dresses in opposing shades. The team then switched things up with handmade couture attire designed and created especially for the project. So, our question you to is: which reflection are you? 55

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.

I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.

Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.

I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.

My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.

Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.

In this day and age, it seems our entire lives can be run online, and indeed over the last two years much of our lives have been forced online. Whether it’s ordering a pizza or shopping for a wedding photographer, it’s often our first port of call in a busy life. When your life is hectic and you haven’t managed to meet photographers at wedding fairs or other weddings, looking at their websites and chatting online can be fitted in any time. What catches your eye first will be the style of images they present. Do they appeal to your own sense of style? Take time to read any recommendations as well as any blogs they may have written as these will give you an idea of their personality. Clearly, you need to be able to communicate easily and comfortably. Ideally, they should respond to your initial enquiry within 24 hours, even if it’s just a, “Thank you and welcome, we’re working at a wedding today but will chat tomorrow.” A helpful, fairly rapid response is always a good indicator. Over the last couple of years we’ve all become accustomed to Zoom calls. They’re a useful tool when you can’t meet in person. They give you a chance to see faces, hear voices, ask questions and look at possible products such as photo albums. They give you the opportunity to see if the photographer is a good match for you both – just don’t judge them by their wallpaper or contents of their shelves! We’ve enjoyed many giggles with clients negotiating the vagaries of video calls. Never be afraid to ask questions. You might even want to know if they have any previous couples who’d be willing to chat with you. Planning your big day should be a pleasure not a chore, so most of all, enjoy yourselves! We’re trying to choose our wedding stationery – what styles and designs are set to be popular in 2022? Are there any big trends we should watch out for?

the vogue for foliage, especially in the form of laurels, wreaths and watercolour illustrations, but there are also new directions to look out for. My top three trends for this year are minimal styling, dark florals and all things celestial. Minimal styling invitations use the bare minimum of words, very simple designs focussing on quality card stock and different coloured or textured inserts for information cards. For example, an invitation with a white card and green text; several different greens used on the insert and a contrasting liner for the envelope. This can be enhanced using foil or letterpress for the print – simple, neat and oh-so stylish. Gorgeous dramatic, dark floral designs involve deep, rich colours against a complementary background. Jewel tones and detailed fonts with interesting swashes and ligatures bringing the text to life. If you know my work, you’ll know I have a special interest in anything floral, and I love this style! Florals can be illustrative or photographed, either way, the deeper, darker and richer the colours, the better. This for me is the new bohemian direction. Lastly, there’s a definite trend for all things celestial emerging. Think starry nights, cosmic connections, astrological symbols, the night sky on the day you met – all wonderful ways of creating a fabulously timeless and effortlessly personal design. There’s so much to choose from! I haven’t even touched on the trend for colouring, which I personally love – splashes of paint, roughly coloured borders, real fun and great for a DIY stationery vibe. Whatever your palette and carefully chosen theme, this season you’re certain to find something that suits.

Vicky says: Winter weddings call for a little extra glitz and glamour! You also need to factor in the sun going down earlier, meaning you’ll need a stronger, more evening-friendly make-up. Soft smoky eyes using greys and plums have been popular with my brides this winter. I like to add a spot of sparkling shimmer right in the centre of the eyelid above the iris. This will catch the light in photos and make your eyes pop. Line with a creamy kohl pencil and smudge it out with a small eyeshadow brush, before defining further with individual lashes strategically placed to give naturallooking volume. Don’t forget two coats of waterproof mascara, and sweep highlight on your brow bone, inner eye and cheekbone. This looks particularly gorgeous in low winter light or candlelight. Finally, choose a deep lip colour for added drama. I recommend patting it on with your finger to give a soft, stained effect.

I can’t decide on a veil or a showstopping headpiece. Are the two even mutually exclusive, or is there a way that I could make both work? What would you suggest? Heidi says: They can definitely work together, but it’s a good idea to take a step back and consider your look as a whole before investing in the combination. I’d always suggest taking your dress, personal style and overall vibe of your wedding day as the basis for your accessories. A simple, slip-style dress almost cries out for a dramatic headpiece and a full-length, elegant, draped veil; whereas a cute, city-chic mini dress looks amazing worn with a shorter, more structured veil and an oversized pearl headband. Veils and headpieces worn together can add texture, colour, movement and interest to your finished look and if you keep them harmonious (a romantic-style veil with a complementing headpiece, or an edgier headpiece, which requires and edgy veil), you can’t go wrong!
