EDITOR’S LETTER
Glam it up W
ho else can’t believe it’s springtime already? It’s such a special time of year and in 2022 we all get to appreciate it so much more given the last two we’ve spent locked up! This issue we’ve got the usual blend of wedspiration from real weddings to expert advice and ideas including a look into the delicious world of showstopping wedding cakes. We’ve also got some glittering ideas for finishing off your big-day look with jewellery and accessories. Speaking of wedding glam, CWM’s very own bride Melissa has been turning her attention to her best gals and we’ve now got our dresses, if not in our hands then on order. It was a bumpy ride, but thanks to Melissa’s unending patience, we got there. We’re now looking at the even more fun stuff such as accessories, shoes, hair and make-up, which has led myself, my fellow bridesmaids and the bride herself to ponder the matter of just whose job it is to foot the bill for the glam? This in no small part is due to the fact that none of us seem able to get the lovely Melissa to take one single penny from us towards it. So, when Fragrance Direct told me they’d teamed up with wedding planer Hannah Rose to discuss just this matter, I was all ears! Thinking about the glam bill, Fragrance Direct asked Hannah whether it was the nearlyweds’ responsibility to pay for everyone or just themselves? She answered unequivocally, “Definitely everyone. If they’ve asked for people to be part of their day, the majority of the time this will fall to the couple to pay. Otherwise, their loved ones may be put off joining the wedding party. Some bridesmaids and groomsmen might be happy to contribute, but it’s always encouraged that the couple plan this into their budget and offer to pay for the basics such as hair and make-up if they want them to have it done. The cost will vary depending on the hair stylist and make-up artist, but I’d advise to allocate a minimum of £150-£200 per person for anyone who isn’t the bride or groom.” So, there we have it. We shall immediately cease arguing with the bride and accept her kindness gracefully. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

SOMETHING BLUE
Jessica Hamilton
Blue & Sixpence Bridal, Merseyside has been given a national award in the best bridal shops and jewellery category. Voted for by its couples, the accolade shows how valued the boutique is within its sector and is a real seal of approval for couples planning their weddings. These particular awards were designed to recognise businesses and individuals who have gone above and beyond to serve their clients during one of the most testing times the industry has ever faced. This year’s awards were based on almost eight million opinions and what better endorsement can there be than one from a couple who have tried and tested the suppliers’ work? LOVE STRUCK DMR Jewellery, which has a showroom in Liverpool, has introduced a romantic new addition to its collection – Love Lines. Designed in-house at the brand’s Cheshire-based studio, it was influenced by one of the most notable romantic symbols, Cupid’s arrow. Cupid, the Roman god of desire and affection, has been famously portrayed throughout the centuries wielding a bow and arrow, which he’d use to make someone fall in love with the first person they saw. Seven individual pieces of jewellery make up this stylish contemporary collection, including earrings, neckwear and wristwear. Two new styles of earrings allow you to choose from diamond set or plain polished, crafted from 18ct yellow gold they’re priced from £950. Appreciating the trend for layering jewellery, a necklace set with 0.22cts of round brilliant-cut diamonds, bracelet and stacking bangles are also part of the Love Lines range. The versatile design means that Love Lines’ pieces will ensure you make a sparkling statement on your wedding day as well as forming part of your everyday layered look for years afterwards. RECHARGE FOR W-DAY
TOP TIPS
When it comes to wedding-day wisdom, who can we trust more than those who’ve been there, done that and bought the t-shirt? So, when the bride is also a wedding supplier in the form of O’Hares Jewellers’ Rachael Whitwam, we were ready to sit up and pay attention. You can read all about her big day from page 37, but in the meantime here are some top planning tips from the bride herself. Rachael tells us, “We got as much as possible sorted and booked early on to give ourselves a much wider choice of suppliers. Everyone gets booked up so far in advance, especially for summer weddings, so this really helped to take the pressure off, giving us months where we didn’t have to think about wedding planning at all. “We had a few private dance lessons during the three weeks leading up to the wedding, which made us feel more relaxed about the first dance. Neither of us are dancers, so we kept it simple, but it made something potentially daunting fun and enjoyable. It was magical to be in the Great Hall at Peckforton Castle surrounded by our family and friends dancing to All of Me by John Legend. “Our wedding video made such a difference to us after the big day. It captures the moments you can’t get in photos alone. Our video by Harvey Films was beautifully edited and such a joy to watch. If you’re undecided about whether to have one, we can’t recommend it enough. We can’t stop watching ours!”

A METEORIC RISE
The start of 2022 has brought a record number of wedding requests to National Museums Liverpool (NML) as its events team prepares for its most romantic year in history! An unexpected flurry of wedding enquiries over the past six weeks has placed some of Merseyside’s arts and cultural landmarks in high demand amongst the region’s nearlyweds. In fact, January saw Hosted By National Museums Liverpool, NML’s events brand and in-house events team, responding to triple the number of wedding enquiries than the monthly requests received during the last three months of 2021. NML has seven venues, the oldest dating back to the 19th-century and includes some of the most-visited museums in England, outside of London. The Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight has become the latest venue to begin hosting weddings, with its first reception held in the magnificent Beaux-Arts style building at the end of 2021. Rebecca O’Neil, events manager at Hosted By National Museums Liverpool says, “Many of our artworks and collections have their own romantic stories and we enjoying playing a part in the love stories of today too. We’re having our busiest ever period for wedding enquiries including newly-engaged couples, as well as those who’ve delayed setting a date or rescheduled their wedding. There’s growing popularity in art galleries and venues that add an element of culture or nostalgia. We’ve also recently found that more people are coming back to their roots from elsewhere to get married.” Find out more about some of NML’s venues over in this issue’s historical and local venues features, or by heading over to www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/venue-hire/weddings 10

And finally, The Library where booklined walls add to the ambience, can seat 30. Even the elusive Northern Lights came out in celebration when Abbie accepted Greg’s proposal of marriage Images courtesy of Lowri-Ellen Photography

REAL WEDDING
D
espite meeting at a festival in Wales aged just 16 and 17, Abbie and Greg didn’t really start getting to know each other until Greg sent Abbie a Facebook message a few months later. After a few dates at the beach, the pair realised they wanted to be together. “Greg says he was first attracted to my smile, while I loved how he could make me laugh until my stomach hurt – in fact he still does every day,” Abbie tells us. In 2017, Greg surprised Abbie with a trip to Iceland for her 21st birthday, and while there they decided to take a Northern Lights tour in the hopes they’d be kind enough to show themselves. However, by the time it reached 1am and the Northern Lights still hadn’t materialised, Abbie decided it was time to call it a night and try again another day. But, Greg suggested they take just one last picture. He set up the camera on a timer, and as the flash went off he got down on one knee and asked Abbie to marry him. “It was the best feeling in the world and The Northern Lights appeared five seconds later. I couldn’t have asked for a better proposal,” Abbie shares. The couple had been struggling to find a venue they loved until they drove up to the beautiful Talhenbont Hall. Abbie explains, “The property has a really nice feel to it with original features and old furniture. The grounds too are beautiful with lawns surrounded by forest and a river running around the estate. It felt so intimate and personal, which ultimately is the reason we chose to book. It really was the full package!” The wedding party had access to the venue’s grounds over three days, which meant family and friends could stay on site the night before the wedding right the way through to the day after... Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day, 15th November 2021...
SETTING THE SCENE With an overarching white and dusky pink theme the centrepieces cleverly incorporated both in a different way. For the guest tables the pair embraced a minimalist approach with white blooms, while the top table, located at the centre of the room, was decorated with floral bursts of colour displayed in a blue and white Chinoiserie vase. The space was filled with tea lights, which created a cosy ambience, setting a romantic scene. The couple made their table plan using their lounge mirror, which they decorated with peach flowers and a hand-drawn gold outline. The table numbers were chosen to complement the design of simple white and gold while the place names were calligraphed by a talented family member. Caterers Cheeky Chilli served a selection of eight canapés, as well as a wedding breakfast of chicken, finishing with a trio of desserts. “They were absolutely amazing,” Abbie says. Speaking of sweet treats the mouth-watering big-day bake was a sight to behold! The single-tier vanilla cake was elaborately piped with pink and light blue icing and topped with cherries. “Birch Bakery did a fantastic job,” Abbie remembers.
LOOKING THE PART “I knew exactly what I wanted my dress to look like and found the one. It made me feel so elegant and beautiful and I’ve never seen anyone wear anything like it,” the bride explains. A long-sleeve gown in bright ivory finished with buttons running it’s full length, Abbie felt it didn’t need more than a delicate crystal belt to add some sparkle and complement her earrings. Greg and his groomsmen all wore black tuxedos. The groom added a black floral waistcoat to his outfit in order to stand out and the suits were all finished off with black bow ties and peach rose buttonholes. The bridesmaids were dressed in dusky pink chiffon maxi dresses with open backs and silk bows. “They were very pretty dresses and both girls looked amazing,” Abbie remembers.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Live jazz and swing band The Chaser Quartet played during the ceremony, drinks reception and wedding breakfast. Abbie had kept this a secret from Greg as it was a surprise gift for him on the day. During the evening, DJ Lee Morrison from Liverpool was accompanied by

REAL WEDDINGS Jesus Martin on the sax. “They were both incredible and made the night. Everyone loved the music and the dancefloor was full all night,” Abbie remembers.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Abbie says, “Greg was fairly calm before the ceremony, but was extremely nervous about his speech. Once the music began and he stood at the end of the aisle waiting for me, he became overwhelmed with emotion and can’t remember anything from that point on!” Greg says, “Abbie didn’t manage to sleep much at all the night before, which only made the nerves worse in the morning. It was emotional for her getting ready with her bridesmaids and family, but as soon as she was with her dad, Cliff, she felt calm and ready to walk down the aisle.” The speeches were the part of the day that stood out most for both bride and groom. They weren’t originally going to have any as both groom and father-ofthe-bride knew how nervous they would be, but in the end their humour and genuine emotion shone through and they felt pleased with how everything went. “We’ve never seen so many men cry in one room,” Abbie laughs. The duo are incredibly grateful to all of their suppliers who were unbelievably helpful and made the day so special. Thanks go out to Alicia and Paul from Talhenbont Hall. Abbie says, “Even though we had to change the date due to Covid all suppliers were happy to make things as easy as possible for us and saved us so much stress. We can’t thank them all enough.” Before parting ways, the bride shares her top tip, “It’s easier said than done, but don’t let the stress and nerves build up before the big day, because once it arrives it’ll be the quickest day of your life and you’ll realise there was literally nothing to worry about. Everyone just wants the best for you, no matter what happens.”
“We feel blessed to have been able to have the wedding of our dreams, with no restrictions, as this hasn’t been the case for everyone.” – Abbie 27

I I love you DO
After rescheduling many times due to Covid, Georgia and Andrai finally tied the knot at Merrydale Manor in September 2021 Images courtesy of Emily Robinson Photography
G
eorgia and Andrai met on MySpace through mutual friends. Aged just 15 and 17 at the time, they went on a first date to Liverpool’s Calderstones Park and have been together ever since. Andrai proposed while on holiday in Santorini. Georgia had always said she’d hate to be asked the all-important question in a room full of people, so he made sure he found a quiet moment. After a wine tasting at Venetsantos Winery, he set up his camera in a secluded spot and told Georgia he was putting the timer on to take a photo of them both with the sunset in the background. Then, once he’d arrived back at her side, he got down on one knee. Merrydale Manor ticked every wedding venue box for the couple. It offered exclusive-use, had plenty of accommodation for their family and friends and boasted stunning grounds and facilities. “We knew straight away we could see ourselves getting married there,” Georgia tells us. “We loved the curtain that divides the Merrydale Suite. For the wedding breakfast the curtain is closed and opens up for the evening. None of our guests knew this so it was a lovely surprise for our first dance,” she continues. Join us as Georgia tells us more about the big day... 30
REAL WEDDINGS
I wore Sophia by Anna Georgina. My mum chose my dress – she saw it on a mannequin and said: “You need to try that.” We knew it was the one straight away!
The ceremony room was decorated with white draping and wisteria hanging from the wooden beams. Organisation is key! There’s nothing to get stressed about and it should be an enjoyable process, so start planning early and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it.
Gospel choir Soulful Voices serenaded our guests during the ceremony, and I walked down the aisle to Your Love Is My Love by Whitney Houston. We walked out together to Beyonce’s 1+1.
I was set on having orchids for my bouquet, as they were my grandma’s favourite flower. We were very close and I wished she could’ve been there on the day along with my nan. I wanted something a little different, so I opted for a beautiful cascading orchid bouquet and had my grandma’s ring tied around it. 31
Andrai’s groomsmen wore black tuxedos, and as the groom he wore a black velvet jacket to elevate his. The buttonholes were white roses.
My bridesmaids were dressed in blush fishtail gowns with a cross strap and open back. Their bouquets were a mixture of hydrangeas and roses. Our centrepieces were a combination of floral arrangements and 10ft blossom trees with hanging glass baubles and floating candles.
32
We had personalised macarons for each person, meaning they doubled up as place names. The ladies’ were strawberries and cream flavour blush macarons and the gents had pistachio cream flavour.
We absolutely love to travel so when we spoke to our stationer, we knew we wanted something to reflect that. We had a map-themed table plan with pins on each of the amazing places we’ve visited and included a photograph of the two of us there. We named each table after our favourite travel destinations, with the top table being Santorini. Alicante is my family’s holiday hotspot, where we all go together. Amalfi Coast is one of our favourite holidays, as well as Thailand, Mexico, Miami and Dubai.
REAL WEDDINGS
Marise from Bloomsbury Cakes is amazing and invited us to her shop to taste the many cake flavours she creates and to see the different shapes available. We opted for a hexagonal bottom tier, with two round tiers. We opted for lemon and chocolate orange for our flavours. We displayed it with a neon sign behind, which read: “It was always you.”
“We provided guest transport for the evening and put a bucket of prosecco and beer on the minibus to get them into the partying spirit!” We were due to get married on 2nd July 2020 and had three other dates in between before restrictions were lifted and we were able to have our dream wedding. It was honestly the best day of our lives and we loved spending it with everyone we love so much.
Our wedding breakfast began with a starter of spiced butternut squash soup with cumin-scented popcorn and a basket of flavoured breads with balsamic and olive oil. The main course was roast Cheshire chicken with gravy, goose fat roast potatoes, sage and onion stuffing and glazed allotment vegetables. We finished the meal with a trio of desserts – sticky toffee pudding, gooey chocolate brownie and brandy snap basket with vanilla ice cream. There were also delicious options for our vegan guests and in the evening we had wood-fired ciabatta pizzas with chips. The choir stayed for our drinks reception and in the evening we had a DJ with sax and bongos who performed on our LED lightup dancefloor. We had indoor fireworks sparklers to set the tone for the evening and get the party started.

romance
ROSE GOLD
Following the heartache of lockdown, Rachael and Dan’s wedding was a dream come true Images courtesy of Caroline White Photography
R
achael didn’t suspect anything other than a relaxing weekend away for her birthday when Dan booked a stay at The Belfry Hotel & Resort. But she started to notice that something was slightly unusual when an hour so before they were due to leave, Dan started to get a tiny bit impatient about her getting ready – completely out of character for him. “It was a complete surprise, I never expected that he was about to propose,” Rachael explains. Neither Rachael nor Dan was at all sure where they wanted to tie the knot. They’d even considered going abroad. In fact, it had started to become a family joke with both sides laughing about
how many Sundays the couple spent at various open days. “I think we were beginning to think we just wouldn’t find the one,” Rachael tells us. Peckforton Castle was the last in the long line. It was Good Friday and they’d booked an early appointment to see the venue rooms being set up for a wedding that day. As soon as the tour began, they knew. “I think a big draw for me was the chapel, which would allow us to have a traditional church blessing,” Rachael explains. Read on as the bride shares her treasured memories of the big day, which took place on 27th June, 2021… 37
LOOKING THE PART Rachael went dress shopping with an idea of exactly the style of dress she wanted, but each one she tried on just didn’t seem to suit her. It wasn’t until two friends joined her and her mum that the tide began to turn, as one of them pulled a complete wild card, which looked perfect. Once they had this new style in mind it was plain sailing, and on the day Rachael looked stunning in Fairy Snow by Diane Harbridge. It had a full satin train with a heavily beaded bodice and belt. Her beautiful cathedral-length veil was embroidered with pale pink flowers: “I felt it brought together the colour scheme and gave a nod towards the bridesmaids dresses,” Rachael tells us. Concerned she’d feel uncomfortable in her weighty wedding gown before too long, the bride changed into an evening dress after the wedding breakfast. It was an embellished tulle and cady gown by Badgeley Mischka. The groom and groomsmen all wore pale grey, checked, three-piece suits with ties, pocket squares and face masks made in the same fabric as the bridesmaids’ dresses. The bridesmaids were dressed in pale pink maxi dresses with beaded bodices to complement Rachael’s wedding dress. Meanwhile, the flowergirls wore plain satin dresses with pale pink flower headbands. The bride had customised all of the dresses with pale pink satin sashes with a bow at the back.
SETTING THE SCENE Having settled on a pink and rose gold palette, the wedding stationery was all designed to match. The table plan complemented the design of the place names and table names, with a pale pink background and the castle sketched in rose gold foil at the top. Similarly, the place names were pearlescent blush pink with rose gold foiled names, while the table numbers were also adorned in rose gold foil, with the menu options printed on the back. The favours also cleverly tied in with the colour palette. They were personalised pink M&Ms stamped with the date, the couple’s names and photos, packaged in bags tied with matching ribbons. Delicious and beautiful! The bride’s bouquet contained pale pink and white roses with gypsophila, astilbe and eucalyptus. The three bridesmaids carried complementing bouquets and the groomsmen’s buttonholes were also designed to match. Rachael says, “I had my bouquet dried and framed with Dan’s buttonhole as a keepsake of the day. We also had some of the wedding flowers preserved as a paperweight and tea lights. You spend so much time planning the day and it flies by, so it really did mean a lot to us to be able to keep as many of the key elements as we could.” The pair used the trees and candles that lined the aisle as centrepieces, with the canopy they’d been married beneath repositioned over the top table. The big-day bake boasted a showstopping six tiers. “As it was such a big room, we felt the height was needed,” Rachael explains. The layers were decorated in alternating shades to suit the colour scheme, with the newlyweds initials iced onto one of them and a rose gold topper with the wedding date at the top. Flavours were death by chocolate, toffee, vanilla genoise and a small fruit cake. The ceremony decorations weren’t the only features to efficiently serve a dual purpose as the pink neon Mr & Mrs Jones sign, which hung in the wedding breakfast room was later moved to the long gallery to make a photo booth backdrop for the evening. There were also giant Mr & Mrs Jones lights illuminating the dancefloor. Plus, Dan made a flip flop crate, “This went down particularly well as I think we’d all got out of practice wearing high heels during lockdown,” Rachael says. The romantic ambience was assisted by an abundance of candles, which were used to line the aisle, adorn the register table and dotted all around the reception space. Rachel explains, “When we were shown around by the owner his key advice when dressing the venue was that candles make the rooms come alive and he was so right.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT The castle’s team took care of the catering and the day’s dining began with canapés at the drinks reception. These included mini Yorkshire puddings, wild mushroom risotto balls and crispy pork rillettes with barbecue flavours. The wedding breakfast consisted of ham hock, wholegrain mustard and chive terrine with piccalilli beetroot gel, and rosemary croûte. This was followed with a main 38
REAL WEDDINGS course of slow-cooked beef with dauphinoise potato, pearl onion and smoked bacon jus. The meal was rounded off beautifully with warm apple crumble tarts with anglaise sauce. There were also mouth-watering alternatives for vegetarian guests.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Rachael and Dan knew they wanted Craig Owen’s violin and piano duo to play, as the first time they visited a wedding fair at the castle they were playing All Of Me, which the couple had already chosen as their first dance song. “It was captivating,” Rachel says. The musical duo played during the morning as guests took their seats for the ceremony and as Rachael walked down the aisle to Canon in D. They also performed the bride and groom’s selections Perfect by Ed Sheeran and Somewhere Only We Know by Keane as they signed the register. For the blessing the newlyweds entered to A Thousand Years by Christina Perri and exited to Queen of Sheeba by Handel. The beautiful violin and piano music continued throughout the drinks reception. Guests were also treated to an owl meet and greet, which was a great opportunity for them to enjoy a memorable experience as they sipped their drinks and nibbled canapés. Magician Spencer Lynch kept everyone entertained after the wedding breakfast as the evening guests were arriving. “He was fantastic and managed to convert all the sceptics,” Rachael remembers. During the evening, the DJ Hipswing played with Sophia Sax and Rachael couldn’t recommend them highly enough. She says, “The atmosphere was transformed once she started to perform, everyone was already having a fabulous time, but it multiplied with the addition of live music.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Rachael shares, “Like many who originally had a 2020 wedding booked, we encountered quite a bit of stress and uncertainty in the lead up to our 2021 date. But when the day did arrive it just made it even more special – we’d made it! It was the first time we’d all been able to be together in more than a year, which really added to the celebrations and made them even more joyous. “We were lucky enough to have a large number of our friends and family staying at the castle the night before, and I remember walking around, bumping into loved ones all day and evening. We were able to have a meal in a private room in the restaurant the night before, which is the kind of thing you rarely get to experience, so I feel very lucky to have had it.” As well as delighting guests with a meet and greet, an owl also performed the task of ring bearer. It was feathered friend Hope’s first delivery and she was a little nervous. All assembled were worried she might not oblige, but with a little coaxing form her handler she was off and on her way.
WITH THANKS Rachael and Dan are incredibly grateful to all of their suppliers. The bride tells us, “We had a bit of disruption with moving the date and then not being sure about numbers, but everyone was amazing and did all they could to make the process as easy as it could be. “Heather at ByBlossom really had her work cut out printing the onthe-day stationery at the last minute since we weren’t able to commit to table plans thanks to the changing restrictions. Janet at Stich In Time was so helpful with altering my dress and making the sashes, ties and pocket squares. Lockdowns made time limited meaning she didn’t have long. Our hair stylist Sarah and make-up artist Lowri were fab, creating such a fun atmosphere getting ready. And Marie from Butterfly Events was with me all the way, she and her team did a spectacular job decorating the venue.” 39

REAL WEDDINGS
COME TRUE
Nadine and George’s big day was a fairy tale inspired by Cinderella Images courtesy of Creative Images Photography
A
s a little girl Nadine had seen a black and white photo of a man on one knee proposing to his love, with the Paris skyline behind them. When she began dating George, aged 17, she came across the image again and told him that it was her dream to experience that same kind of magic one day. Lo and behold, a few days before her 21st birthday, George surprised her with a trip to Paris and proposed there, beneath the Eiffel Tower. “He’d remembered that photo for all those years and without saying a word to anyone about it, he made my dream come true,” Nadine tells us. The couple looked at wedding venues all over the UK from Scotland to Stratford-Upon-Avon and saw so many stunning
places, but eventually decided on Crewe Hall in Cheshire. “As soon as we saw it we fell in love with the architecture, décor and gardens,” Nadine explains. They had their heart set on saying “I do” in a church, but not being from the area they turned to Crewe Hall’s wedding planner, who Nadine describes as “an absolute angel,” for recommendations. She advised them to take a look at St Mary’s in Nantwich, which turned out to be the perfect match. The wedding’s colour palette was blush pink and pale blue. Nadine explains, “The colours reminded me so much of Cinderella, my favourite film growing up.” Once this was settled, the rest fell into place. Read on to learn more about Nadine and George’s showstopping wedding day... 43
A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS After George proposed in Paris he took Nadine to Laduree on the Champs Elysee for tea and macarons, this was when they decided their favours would have to be the same Laduree macarons they enjoyed that day. The salted caramel flavoured delights were presented in Laudree’s special edition wedding boxes. “They went so well with our colour palette,” Nadine remembers. The bride had her heart set on a fairytale theme without it being over the top, tacky or in-your-face Disney. So, stationer Paper Doll made subtle hints through the table names, which bore illustrations and quotes from each of their favourite fairy tales. Faux flower centrepieces adorned the reception tables. “I wanted artificial because I planned to keep one for our home, placed in the heirloom vase my grandmother left me as a wedding present before she passed away,” Nadine explains. The bouquets and buttonholes however contained fresh flowers. The bride was able to show her florist the colour palette and photos that inspired her vision, leaving the team to create the orchid bouquet she fell so much in love with. Being huge comic book fans, Nadine and George knew they wanted the big-day bake to be a little different from the traditional. So, instead of a bride and groom cake topper they opted for Spider-Girl and Spider-Man figurines, and the reveal side displayed a cascade 44
of wedding-edition covers from many of their favourite comics. Meanwhile, on the other side were pale blue and blush pink flowers with a cut-out tier holding a porcelain figurine of Cinderella and Prince Charming. Despite wanting nothing more than a horse-drawn carriage for her wedding day, the distance between the hotel and church meant it would have been an impossible round trip for the horses and would take up too much time on the day. Instead, they booked a vintage Imperial Viscount Landaulette to get the bride and father-of-the-bride to the church on time. After, the ceremony though, Nadine got to have her wish as a horse-drawn carriage transported her and George back to Crewe Hall. “It was so lovely to have an hour together as husband and wife to enjoy each other’s company before the party. Everyone on the streets waved and wished us well as we went by,” the bride remembers. For the wedding breakfast, Crewe Hall created a bespoke menu. The newlyweds and assembled guests dined on a starter of king prawns with sweet chilli, followed by a main course of confit duck with dauphinoise potatoes and tenderstem broccoli. The meal was finished with vanilla crème brûlée with raspberry coulis. “It was delightful. We went for our menu tasting and the team made sure they knew exactly how we’d like everything cooked and served,” Nadine tells us.
HOLLYWOOD GLAM
REAL WEDDINGS
Inspired by the old Hollywood style, Nadine visited an independent designer whose work she has admired for many years. The bride tells us more: “I wanted something timeless and classic over something trendy. My design was a combination of Elizabeth Taylor’s first wedding dress when she married Conrad Hilton in 1950 and the design of Aurora’s dress in Walt Disney’s 1959 Sleeping Beauty.” The groom wore a classic royal blue Ted Baker suit, and instead of a waistcoat to match the groomsmen, his was sky blue. Since they were due to get married in May 2020, the groomsmen’s suits were several seasons old and out of stock by the time they were finally able to wear them in July 2021. Thankfully the staff at Slater Menswear managed to track them down in time saving the day. The bridesmaids’ gowns were custom made and made the girls wearing them feel confident, comfortable and glamorous. They were pale blue, Bardot style and floor-length. For a final touch, Nadine’s dress designer added some pale pink lace appliqués to the waists to tie in the colour palette.
FEELING GOOD James Wedding Singer performed during the wedding breakfast. “We love Michael Buble and the classic crooner style of music, as well as being huge country music fans. James went out of his way to perform all our favourites and even arranged to have George sing to me during his wedding speech. He brought such a good atmosphere with him and had our guests up dancing between courses.”

he wedding cake: sweet treat, reception dessert or showstopping centrepiece? Who’s to say it can’t be all three? Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, the big-day bake has been an enduring tradition and wedding stalwart since couples first said “I do.” Its origins are thought to date back to Ancient Rome when a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride’s head to signify good fortune. Thankfully, you won’t be forced to wear the delicacy today, so it’s something that’s well worth thinking about. The modern cake maker is now more versatile than ever and can whip you up a sweet showstopper big enough to take the place of your wedding breakfast dessert, or be served at your evening reception. Handing around the slices is also a lovely way of making sure you get to see all of your guests. Alternatively, there’s the option to have

YOUR WEDDING RING BUYING GUIDE
1
STEP
BUDGET
Much like the rest of your wedding planning you need to mutually agree on what you want to spend on your wedding rings, bearing in mind this is something you’ll be wearing 24/7 for the rest of your lives. Considering the hardiness of the metal you choose for example is important. More on that later! There’ll be something out there to suit whatever your budget though.
2 STEP
KNOW YOUR RING SIZE
It’s important to get this right before you order as not all rings can be easily resized without a major overhaul of the design. Your jeweller will take your measurements properly, but if you’d like to get an idea for yourself there are plenty of measuring guides online.
3 STEP
CONSIDER YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING
Be sure to wear your engagement ring when you’re shopping for the wedding bands as it will influence your choice. You’ll likely want to match the metal and even
“Invest in an ethically made, quality, timeless design that you love. This way it really will last a lifetime, you’ll always remember where it was made and it will sit well against other rings and jewellery.” – Francesca Kippax, Anuka Jewellery the shape, stones and depth. This is doubly important if you want your wedding band to be shaped around the design of your engagement ring. Many jewellers offer ready-shaped options to fit alongside standard diamond cuts such as marquise and pear, but you can always go down the custom-made route if none of them work. Rachael Whitwam at O’Hares says, “If you have an unusually shaped engagement ring our in-house workshop can make shapedto-fit bands to work perfectly alongside it.”
4 STEP
WHAT’S YOUR STYLE?
Once upon a time wedding rings were by and large simple gold bands, but nowadays the options are incredibly varied. On a basic level there’s eternity (where stones go all the way around), half eternity (where they cover half the band)
or plain of course; then there’s matte or polished... we could go on. Also, have a think about whether you want your rings to match, complement each other or be completely different. Rachael Whitwam at O’Hares says, “Try to stay true to what you love as you’ll be wearing it every day.”
5
STEP
WHICH METAL?
This is arguably the most crucial decision as it will affect everything from the cost to the longevity of your rings, as well as the obvious look. The hardest wearing precious metal is platinum, which holds polish a lot longer than white gold. Alternatively, 18ct gold is best if you prefer the yellow tone.
6
STEP
PERSONALISATION
Your wedding rings are the ultimate symbol of your love and commitment to one another, so why not personalise them as much as possible? While all of the above will do that for you, you can go one step further by having them engraved with a meaningful phrase, your initials and wedding date or even your finger prints.
DID YOU KNOW?
www.oharesjewellers.co.uk 54
www.oharesjewellers.co.uk
Traditionally, the wedding ring goes onto the third finger of your left hand first, so that it’s the closest one to your heart. The engagement ring will be next, followed by any eternity rings you’re lucky enough to receive for future anniversaries!

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know
SPRINGTIME VIBES
We love to use locally-sourced meadow-style flowers for an effortlessly elegant spring wedding. Think ranunculus, parrot tulip and anemones in pretty pastel hues or bright colours if you’re feeling bold. For a bridal bouquet we’d arrange stems into a loose, hand-tied arrangement with wild foliage, including asparagus fern and pittosporum tied with natural hessian ribbon. For brides wanting an even more effortless look, a simple hydrangea bouquet in fresh or vibrant tones with limited foliage may be your thing.
AS YOU WISH I’d love an alternative to a fresh flower bouquet. What can you suggest? There are so many routes you can go down for your bouquet from artificial fabric flowers, dried florals, paper blooms, floral hoops and those made from an eclectic mix of quirky, cool elements. Some of my more elaborate bouquet designs have musical and light-up elements, such as an illuminated candelabra and flashing disco ball. I even have a bouquet that blows bubbles! Many of my clients come to me with very specific ideas and themes and by working closely with them, I’m able to create floral sculptures full of unique and individual elements that tell a visual story of their lives and love for each other. Choosing non-fresh flowers also gives you the flexibility of being able to order blooms that may be out of season on your big day. It also allows you to select specific colours and gives you the further option of taking your bouquet with you should you wish to elope. Best of all, when the wedding is over you’re left with a beautiful, everlasting, visual keepsake of your day, which can remain on permanent display.
Arranging loose stems into mismatched jars at varying heights is an inexpensive way to decorate both the top and guest tables when dispersed with mixed foliage and pillar tables to add height. Incorporating dried elements too such as pampas, birch and pussy willow is an easy way of adding texture and drama to your décor. For those with a larger budget, we love using lush foliage garlands to decorate tables, seating plans and even pew-ends. For colourful couples, adding filler flowers such as tanecetum is a simple and cheerful way of introducing some vibrance. Gemma Wakerley | www.bookerweddings.co.uk

UNITED BY LOVE We’ve heard about all of the different rituals we can have during a celebrant-led ceremony from hand-fasting to candle-lighting, but what’s the difference and how do we know which is right for us?
http://andrewab.photography
There are indeed many ways to enhance your celebrant-led wedding ceremony. To choose the one for you, you should begin by asking yourself what the purpose of the ritual is or consider what you’re showing your guests with it. Most rituals emphasise the joining together of two people into one couple. However, you can change a sand ceremony (where you pour different coloured sands into one larger container to show your union), to include your children and show the creation of a new family. Hand-tying or hand-fasting is where the couple’s hands are bound together with strips of cloth or ribbon to represent the promises made. This too can easily be altered to include children or other close family or friends. Each person can place a ribbon with each vow to feel included in the ceremony. Candle lighting involves each of you using individual candles to light one larger candle. This can be used to remember those guests who have passed away. With the candle remaining alight during the ceremony, it’s as if the friend or family member is with you. The most important idea behind choosing an additional ritual is to find something that resonates with you. Alternatively, work with your celebrant to create one that’s unique to you.

Popular gift ideas for the groom are personalised cufflinks or signet rings. These can be made in a variety of metals to suit all budgets and tastes such as silver, 9ct or 18ct gold, or platinum. Usually, we engrave the front with your husband-to-be’s initials, but there are so many ways to personalise them as you wish. We can set a stone into the corner for example, some people like to get their husband’s birthstone or one to represent the month of the wedding. You can also put a message or the date of the wedding on the reverse side. Rachael Whitwam | www.oharesjewellers.co.uk 58
Singing waiters provide surprise event entertainment that gets any party started. Our professional singers arrive at your event before your guests and carry out a cheeky sound check, then we’ll get into our waiter uniforms and go undercover. This brings us to the fun part where we get to know your guests while being disguised as waiters. We hand out canapés, pour wine and just generally blend in. Then, when the moment is right, BANG we perform the biggest surprise and go from waiters to singers, bursting into song. We sing an interactive set of songs that will have napkins waving in the air, hands clapping and guests singing along. Whatever the atmosphere you want to create for your wedding, singing waiters can make it happen. We form Team Secret along with your venue and suppliers, liaising with them about your day and making plans behind the scenes. All you need to do is pick the songs and we can even help with that. We’ll make sure your wedding is memorable for years to come, after all memories are precious and we just love making them. Remember though, it’s a surprise, so don’t tell anyone else! Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
ALL IN THE DETAIL I do love my unembellished dress, but I’m now worried it’s a bit too plain. How can I use accessories to give it more oomph? Heather says: My first suggestion would be to add a sparkly belt. It can be wide or thin, lacy or beaded, and even made detachable if you want to have a different look for the evening without buying another outfit. This is also a good way of emphasising your waist and drawing the eye away from the plainness of the dress. You could even have a coloured sash that complements the colour of your bridesmaids’ dresses, or the groom’s suit. Another great way of utilising accessories as embellishment is to use contrasting veils and head pieces. For example, a twinkly veil adds an extra layer to the dress that can later be taken off. Head pieces, either hair combs, slides or vines twinkle looking amazing in photographs – use it to your advantage! If you don’t like sparkle or it doesn’t work with your theme, try adding fresh flowers or a laceedged veil to your hair. Even the flowers in your bouquet could work to make your dress special.
YOU DO HUE I don’t want to wear white or ivory, but still want to look bridal. What options do I have? Ali says: Not everyone suits brilliant white, and ivory comes in so many shades it can be hard to find the right one. This is where your expert bridal consultant can help. Many brides opt for gowns with a subtle hint of colour. There are plenty of shades to choose from, not just blush. There are warm, neutral and cool colours to complement every skin tone, eye and hair colour. Overlays, in complementary shades of ivory are also an option. They mute the colour and help any details to stand out, meaning you can get that bridal look without wearing entirely white or ivory. A friend of mine wore a wine-red gown – it suited her dark hair and pale complexion to a tee. It was a satin A-line gown with a long train, which she bustled for the evening reception. So, she still had the bridal style and silhouette that suited her, but was also able to rock a frock in the best shade for her. Pastel prints, highlighted textures and coloured embroidery are popular. Meanwhile, nude linings overlaid with intricate fabrics let the design stand out – ideal if you want a bold contrast. Don’t be afraid to opt for a coloured gown though, we can always match your veil to your dress allowing you to have the bridal look you love and crucially a feel that’s right for you.

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got
engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.
BRIDE’S DIARY
VENUE
PHOTOGRAPHER
❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.
❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.
FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.
WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 85
