elcome one and all to another issue of Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding. Here we are, my favourite part of the year where it feels like there’s so much to look forward to (will you be cross if I say I’m excited about Christmas already?). I adore the autumn as colours change and the air starts to cool. Mind you, based on the weather as I write this, the temperatures won’t have far to fall this year! What a great time to get married though. September tends to be pretty dependable climate-wise and there’s a wonderfully romantic feel of promise just as the seasons change. Plus, I love to see what couples and their suppliers come up with in terms of wedding colour palettes at this time of year – burgundy paired with blush is my top tip! I’m loving being involved with wedding plans myself as Melissa, my dear friend and editor here at CWM, makes plans to tie the knot next July, with yours truly as bridesmaid – I may have mentioned that once or twice... She’s already chosen her gown, in which she looks stunning. But what we learned from this experience is not to panic if you don’t instantly burst in to tears at the knowledge that it’s the one. If that’s just not you, you’re unlikely to change your entire personality the moment you try on a wedding dress. Sometimes, the knowledge that you’ve chosen your dream attire comes from careful deliberation and a process of trying on all silhouettes to know what suits and what doesn’t. Melissa actually chose a dress that’s the complete opposite to what she thought she’d go for and this is something we as editors hear all the time. Remember: you do you and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. I hope you enjoy this splendid issue and keep planning!

Award-winning wedding florist Foam Wedding Flowers & Gifts, based in Maghull, cleverly adapted the business to stay afloat when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. When her couples were forced to postpone or cancel their big days, owner Joanne Quinn turned to home decoration to keep her busy. She started with relevant themes and seasons, listening to her customers and creating a connection to their thoughts and feelings, making the most vibrant rainbow floral arrangements to honour our outstanding NHS and creating hundreds of Christmas products, from wreaths to table centrepieces to make homes feel extra special at a difficult time. Many people were focusing on making those muchneeded home improvements and revitalising the place they were spending so much time in, so Joanne expanded her offering into finishing touches with vases, pampas grass and artificial house plants taking over her shop. Now, with restrictions lifted, Joanne is back to focusing on creating perfect posies and stunning sprays of foam flowers for her belated brides-to-be and is hopeful that weddings can once again be the perfect days that couples have longed for. The team at Colshaw Hall has made the most of recent lockdowns, when they’d usually be hosting weddings, and have created The Den, a new dedicated pre-ceremony space for grooms and their groomsmen. Designed to steady any last minute nerves before the “I dos,” the space is located next to The Ceremony Room and is super-stylishly decorated in a Cheshirecountryman theme. There are comfy sofas, Harris tweed furnishings and leather-look walls in cool grey tones, offering a fab backdrop for weddingprep photography. Hang up your jacket and choose whether to play table tennis, table football or chill in front of the widescreen TV. There’s plenty of space to get ready too. The bar area will be finished soon too and will include a fridge of drinks on the house. The Den is available from 11am on the day of the wedding. Check out www.colshawhall.com

This issue, we chat big-day beauty with professional freelance make-up artist Leah Hughes of Painted by Leah. What’s your favourite bridal look and why? I love elegant and timeless looks that really enhance and capture brides’ natural beauty. I think it’s so important for them to feel like the best version of themselves on their special day, giving them full confidence when they walk down the aisle.

As you can tell from our recent Instagram post, the editorial team here at CWM HQ were a tad excited the day Boris announced weddings could go ahead restriction-free!
How long before the wedding should brides book an appointment? I’d say around 12-18 months prior to the wedding. I love to build a strong relationship with all my brides so the more time we have to get to know each other the better. Trials are usually around six months before the big day. Do you have any top tips for brides thinking about their wedding day hair and make-up? Start early with skincare. A good skincare regime will make a huge difference to your overall make-up application and give you that gorgeous flawless finish making you look radiant in all of your pictures. I will always recommend products I trust and can give you any advice you might need. Leah offers tailored make-up services for brides and their bridal parties. GRANGE WEDDING BARN

This recently renovated farm barn, blessed with breathtaking views, is situated in the rural Cheshire countryside. The interior has been finished to the highest standard while maintaining a relaxed and rustic atmosphere. A highlight is the huge statement windows, which allow you to make the most of those views. There’s an option both for an indoor or outdoor ceremony here. The indoor Ceremony Room is sectioned off from the main barn by hessian curtains. It offers quirky seating in the form of hay bales and boasts a set of French doors that allow you to exchange vows in front of the
surrounding vista. It can host 150 loved ones. Before moving on to the wedding breakfast, you and your guests can enjoy a glass of fizz and some canapés on the outdoor decking area. Alternatively, say “I do” on the decking, which again offers spectacular views. This area is set up with wooden chairs and can seat 180. Receptions take place in the main barn. A versatile space, it’s ideal for any wedding from small and intimate to larger affairs. Think wagon wheel chandelier-lights, hay bales, a long bar made from wooden pallets and a space flooded with natural light. It can accommodate 200 for the wedding breakfast and 220 for the evening bash. What’s more, a wedding coordinator is included in the venue hire.

REAL WEDDINGS
K
im and Edward met while they were both working at Liverpool’s Arena and Convention Centre. So, their paths naturally crossed day-to-day and they gradually got to know each other. One day Edward invited Kim to a work night out with a few colleagues from his team. However when she arrived, much to her surprise, herself and Edward were the only two to have turned up. It was then she discovered that in fact there never was a work night out planned, it was merely a ruse devised by Edward to ask her out on a date. “While devious isn’t a characteristic most would look for in a husband, Ed does have many other qualities,” Kim assures us. “He’s kind, funny and perfect to me,” she explains. Edward was quickly forgiven and the pair started dating. Three years down the line on Christmas Eve, Edward proposed in front of both sets of parents, with the twinkling lights of the tree in the background and a couple of bottles of Möet & Chandon on hand. It’s a time of year that’s special to the couple, so it meant a lot that the groom-to-be had chosen it to pop the question. Sadly, their original 2018 wedding date had to be cancelled when Kim was severely injured in a car accident and needed to focus all efforts on her recovery. It took a full three years before she was able to build up the strength to undertake normal activities again and the pair rescheduled their wedding for 5th June 2021. Plans were still somewhat hampered by the pandemic, but Kim says, “It felt long overdue, so we were delighted when the government announced we could share our special day with 30 of our closest friends and family.” We caught up with Kim and Edward to find out more...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION The couple had been attending services at St Peter’s Church in Woolton together, so it felt right to have their ceremony there. It’s actually a spot famous for its Beatles connection as it was here that John Lennon met Paul McCartney in 1957, and the surrounding graveyard is where Eleanor Rigby of the eponymous song was laid to rest. For the reception Kim and Edward purposely chose a venue with the guest list restrictions in mind: “We didn’t want it to lack atmosphere if it was too big for the number of people we could invite,” Kim explains. So, they opted for a Chinese meal at the recently refurbished Ying Wah restaurant, conveniently just a short walk from the church. Once appetites were satisfied, the wedding party headed over the road to the Woolton Village Club, where they spent the rest of the evening celebrating.
SETTING THE SCENE As wedding favours the couple sent guests a special photograph taken by their photographer as a keepsake. Plus, since loved ones would be visiting three venues throughout the day, they were also gifted hand gels and face masks to keep them safe, as well as love heart sweets for an added treat. The table plan was housed in a small frame customised with silk ribbon to complement the day’s cornflower blue colour palette. The centrepieces at Woolton Village Club were light-up clear orb balloons. “They were simple, elegant and looked beautiful,” Kim remembers. These were mixed in with customised Mr & Mrs balloons of a 23

similar style with the strings made from silk flowers, which the couple were able to keep as a reminder of their big day. In addition the top table was dressed in a gorgeous array of flowers. On the subject of beautiful blooms, Kim’s bouquet was an ivory cascade of roses, while the bridesmaids’ featured a pop of colour including the key cornflower blue. Kim explains, “Our flowers elegantly brought together the colours worn by everyone in the bridal party.” She continues, “Hayley at Dutch Flower Shop was brilliant to work with and not only created beautiful florals in the form of buttonholes, bouquets and centrepieces, but also made lovely bouquets for the mothers-ofthe-bride and -groom. She also gave us plenty of helpful tips such as providing vases for the posies and bouquet so they had somewhere to go when people were tired of holding them in the evening. Her service was flawless.” The big-day bake was carefully decorated in delicate edible lace and colours to coordinate with the bridal party’s attire. It had three tiers each of a different flavour: vanilla, chocolate and lemon. The sweet centrepiece on the day was actually a dummy cake as the real one had already been pre-portioned into personalised boxes. “Nicky from Nicky May Cakes is a creative genius. She’s also a customer-focused, helpful and lovely person. Nothing was too much trouble,” Kim remembers.
REAL WEDDINGS
LOOKING THE PART The bride wore Love by Amanda Wyatt, a classic matte satin, A-line gown with pleating and back detail. Kim fell in love with the sweetheart neckline and feminine silk ruched detail. “I tried on lots of different dresses in a variety of shapes and styles, but I just knew when I put this one on that it was the one I wanted to marry Ed in. I loved it and didn’t want to take it off.” she explains. Kim accessorised with a Swarovski crystal-embellished veil, a necklace, drop earrings and a tiara set with Austrian crystals and Russian man-made diamonds. Kim was surprised when Edward walked into Groom and picked out Egan Tails by TORRE right away – “He’s usually a casual dresser, but he was so decisive! The first suit he tried on was the one he chose,” she says. It complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses perfectly. The assistant then helped them pick out an ivory tie for the groom and blue ties for his groomsmen. Dresses for the bridesmaids were a difficult choice as the ones Kim really wanted needed to be imported from Italy and with delays caused by Covid it was unlikely they’d arrive in time. Eventually though, she came across the gorgeous Angeleye Mira Embellished Maxi Dress online, which the bridal boutique’s skilled seamstress altered for the ladies.
TIME TO CELEBRATE As Covid restrictions prevented guests from hitting the dancefloor, the pair opted for a musician instead of a DJ. “Chris Tavener was a true professional. He played the song for our first dance and had a great repertoire that worked perfectly with the different age ranges of our guests – everything from Bob Dylan and The Beatles to George Ezra. He was great at reading his audience and adapting his style to the atmosphere,” Kim tells us. Chris’ music flowed throughout the evening and he was even kind enough to stay later than planned.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Kim recalls, “Because so much had gone into the organisation of the wedding I was calm and ready to enjoy the day. 25
Everything was plain sailing. “Our photographers Kevin and Carole Brown were amazing – they had control of everything, wrapping photos up quickly, spotting great shot opportunities and being supportive. They’d chip in and help with anything. They built up a rapport with us so quickly that by the end of the first hour we were as comfortable with them as we were with our own family. “Eva, our make-up artist was a real asset too. I honestly don’t know how we’d have gotten through without her. She worked seamlessly with our photographers, ensuring we were ready on time for photo shoots and above all she was a tonic for any big-day nerves!” Edward says, “Signing the marriage document and hearing the beautiful music we’d chosen for this moment (the score from Ghost) was really moving. I’ll never forget reading our vows and that feeling you have being pronounced man and wife.”
THE GETAWAY The newlyweds spent their wedding night at the luxury fivestar Chester Grosvenor Hotel, where they were greeted with champagne on arrival. While dining in La Brasserie they met a couple due to celebrate their 80th birthdays next year and got chatting. They told Kim and Edward that the best piece of marital advice they could offer was to plan their lives together, because time passes so quickly. After parting ways the couple’s new friends reappeared some time later with a wedding gift for them – a Simon Radley teddy bear, so that they’d always remember that night at the Chester Grosvenor. “This act of kindness was a lesson to appreciate each moment you have,” Kim says. From here they travelled to River Nene Cottages in Peterborough, where they honeymooned for a fortnight. The weather was glorious so they spent plenty of time at the poolside and enjoyed picnics in the grounds as well as taking in champagne sunsets on the River itself.

REAL WEDDINGS
Amy and Ben celebrated their summer nuptials at Liverpool Cricket Ground

my and Ben met on a certain dating app when Ben was attending university in Coventry and Amy was living in Liverpool. The pair hit it off instantly, discovering a mutually strong sense of family values and similar interests. So, despite the first nine months of their relationship being long distance while Ben completed his studies in paramedic science, they developed an unbreakable bond as love blossomed between them. Ben proposed in 2019 while in Florida swimming with dolphins. This had been a dream of Amy’s, so there seemed no better time. The plan was for the dolphin to bring a buoy over to Amy conveying the message, ‘Ben says I love you.’ He’d hoped that she would then turn to face him, at which point he’d propose but, that’s not quite what happened. “She threw the buoy back out into the pool without reading it,” Ben tells us. It turned out to be second time lucky though and the proposal was an eventual success. “She never expected it and was completely shocked,” Ben remembers. The couple said “I do” on 26th June 2021, we caught up with the groom to find out more about the big day…
29
The ceremony took place in the church I attended as a child, St Mary’s Woolton. My mum and dad got married there, as did my auntie. In fact, Cilla Black also tied the knot there!
Both Amy and I were surprisingly relaxed on the day and just excited to see each other at the altar. Turning around to see Amy walking down the aisle towards me looking unbelievable was a real highlight for me.
We settled on The Century Pavilion at Liverpool Cricket Ground for the reception after falling in love with its impressive windows, which allow plenty of natural light to flood the space, before transforming at sunset. The cricket pitch itself was also a bonus, as the children could entertain themselves there creating the relaxed family vibe we were looking for.
Amy wore an Essense of Australia dress (D3066). It was a sparkling fit and flare with a plunging V-neckline, thin straps and side cut-outs. She accessorised with a Linzi Jay veil, diamond tennis bracelet and diamond stud earrings.
I wore a light blue checked suit from House of Cavani, with a blush tie. My groomsmen dressed in dark navy suits with matching ties and waistcoats that complemented my attire.
30
The bridesmaids’ dresses were blush pink and full-length, in a Grecian style with a slit.
REAL WEDDINGS
We booked an Imperial Viscount Landaulette and a Daimler DS 420 limousine for our wedding transport.
Place names were cut from mirrored acrylic and adorned with blush ribbon. We named our tables after all the spots Amy and I had visited together. These were also mirrored acrylic to match the place names and table plan.
We didn’t want a large cake as they always seemed to go to waste at weddings we’d been to in the past. Instead, we opted for cupcakes that people could help themselves to, along with a simple cutting cake.
Our favours were macarons in blush pink and white. They were packaged in individual boxes labelled with customised stickers, which read: “Thank you for sharing our special day.”
The bouquets and buttonholes featured pink and white peonies and roses with foliage. We also had baskets for the flowergirls, filled with gypsy grass to match their halos. We used the venue’s candelabras as centrepieces decorated with flowers on half of the tables, and floral plinths on the remainder.
The venue was already decorated with white ceiling drapes and glass chandeliers. We added a silver sequin glitter wall with a neon personalised ‘The Hannahs’ sign, along with a video wall behind the top table. 31
The singing waiters went down a treat with our guests, who were totally shocked! The waiters caused a scene prior to breaking out into song. They had everyone up dancing, which created a great atmosphere.
Amy and I planned our honeymoon together. We went to Saint Lucia for two weeks.

To celebrate the triumphant return of unrestricted weddings, we take a look back at some of our favourites
H
ere at Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding, we were cock-a-hoop when Boris announced that all restrictions on weddings would be lifted in July. The wait had been agonising both for the industry and for its lovely couples. We’ve absolutely loved seeing a wealth of intimate Covidsafe “I dos,” planned by inspiring couples simply unwilling to give in and determined to celebrate their love. They’ve taught us so much about living for the moment and appreciating what’s most important. On the other hand there are those amongst you who have a different
GOTHIC OPULENCE
GREAT SCOT!
Groom Jack hails from Inverness and when he asked Hayley out on a first date it was over the phone, as he was home celebrating Hogmanay. Eight years later, outside Inverness Castle, he asked Hayley to be his wife. So, given the significant part it played in their love story, it’s no surprise that the couple drew inspiration for their wedding theme from beautiful Scotland. The floral arrangements featured thistles, nodding to Jack’s heritage; the groom and his groomsmen all wore kilts; and guests were welcomed to Wrenbury Hall by the sound of bagpipes. Images: www.capturemybigday.com

Sara and Mike created their day at Thornton Manor in an avant-garde style with tones of red, black and gold. We’re still obsessed two years later! Sara shared some words of wisdom with us: “If you can, opt for an earlier ceremony. We got married at 2pm and the day flew by. I felt as though I didn’t have enough time to enjoy it and speak to everyone.”
kind of determination, standing firm on your dream wedding plans, deciding to ride out the storm and refusing to compromise. And that too is just as admirable. If there’s one point that bears repeating its that your wedding is your day, your way and you should never do anything other than what the two of you feel is right. So, to celebrate the triumphant return of weddings without borders we decided to take a look back at some of our favourites from recent years, big and small.
A
theme COME TRUE
Images: www.a-w-photography.co.uk
We love it when a couple come up with a theme that’s personal to them, as well as the ingenious ways they weave it throughout the day. Here are some of our particular favourites.
THE ANATOMY OF LOVE Sarah and Chris chose an enchanted forest theme for their wedding celebrations at The Oak Tree of Peover. Talking about their venue choice, the bride told us, “We weren’t bothered about having a summer wedding, but were still looking for somewhere with the benefits of the great outdoors. The Oak Tree of Peover has glass walls and a cosy interior, so you could still enjoy the beautiful autumn trees.” 34
REAL WEDDINGS
HAPPILY EVER AFTER
AN INSTANT CONNECTION
While Jen and Peter’s wedding plans encountered a huge pandemicshaped hurdle, the big-day itself was filled with love, support and understanding. Jen told us, “We basically had to overhaul the entire wedding. Everything apart from the church, photographer, flowers and dress changed. But the support we had throughout was amazing, and it really made us treasure our family and friends even more. The worst feeling was not knowing whether our wedding would go ahead, with new restrictions happening every day. It was stress unlike anything I’ve known, until the evening before when we knew it was all going ahead.” Images: Alan Martin Photography
Images: www.kevinbrownphotography.co.uk
Katy and Sean tied the knot at St George’s Hall, a gorgeous grand location, with celebrations to follow at Love Lane Brewery, Liverpool. They were forced to downsize their day due to Covid, but Katy told us, “Becky at Love Lane was brilliant at adapting around the situation and ensured all the rules were kept to.” Reflecting on the big day, the bride said, “It couldn’t have gone any better than it did, against all the Covid odds. It was everything we’ve always dreamed of and more. It really was the best day ever.”
Love IN THE MIDST OF chaos
Images: www.andyjphotography.co.uk
Many couples have stood firm in challenging times, going ahead with their wedding days, whatever trying circumstances the pandemic threw at them. Guest lists were cut, venues were booked and re-booked, wedding plans made it to version 5.0 and then some. But love won and they made it. We’ve certainly enjoyed seeing the gorgeous, intimate nuptials that have gone ahead in between lockdowns.
THYME OF OUR LIVES
Doctors Jen and Tom met at Leeds Medical School. Their wedding date was originally set for 28th March 2020, but only five days beforehand the country went into lockdown, so they were forced to postpone. Jen told us, “We were both absolutely devastated. After almost two years of planning, then having to cancel the event with less than a week’s notice was heartbreaking.” As doctors, the couple had to work throughout the pandemic, which was difficult for them, not least because they lost family members along the way. But they ultimately decided that life was too short and tied the knot on 12th April, 2021 at Thornton Manor. “Intimate weddings are absolutely fantastic. There was no stress and everyone had a fabulous time. You just have to make the best of the situation you have and know at the end of the day, the most important thing is getting married,” Jen concluded.

SHOWERED WITH LOVE
A DAY TO REMEMBER
Louise and Alex chose an intimate countryside vibe for their celebrations at Nunsmere Hall, with rustic touches such as country garden flowers, brown paper, burlap, string and a palette base of racing green. Louise shared some words of wisdom, “We chose to have our speeches before the wedding breakfast, which made the speechmakers very happy. None of the men were natural public speakers, so this allowed them to relax and enjoy their food. We didn’t want them to worry about it any longer than they had to.” Images: www.adamjoeroberts.com
Images: https://carolinewhitephotography.co.uk
The Tithe Barn at Meols Hall struck a chord with Rebekah and Robert. “It was so picturesque and fitted the relaxed feel we wanted for our wedding,” the bride told us, and the rain failed to put a dampener their big day.
RUSTIC
romance

A beloved member of our CWM editorial team will be tying the knot next year and has chosen a rustic vibe for her styling. So, we’re more interested than ever in couples who’ve been there, done that and bought the T-shirt when it comes to countryside venues styled with a relaxed flair. These ones have definitely stayed with us.
OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Lizzie and Rich said “I do” at The Cock O’Barton, near Chester, and created a relaxed vibe for their celebrations. The bridal party’s attire and the nature-inspired colour palette reflected this perfectly. Lizzie was inspired by bridal boutique Along Came Eve when she walked past it one day and spotted a stunning floral gown in the window. “I just knew it would have the dress for me,” she said, and wasn’t wrong. Amongst the beautiful samples she found the one, Azriel by Watters. The bridesmaids complemented the theme in maxi dresses with a super-cool peach floral chintz fabric. 36
TACKLED BY LOVE
Jade and Stuart said “I do” at Stock Farm. When thoughts initially turned to the wedding day following their engagement, the venue goals were somewhere rustic, with a relaxed atmosphere and picturesque views. And, Jade told us, “Stock Farm had all of this and more.” The pair opted for a Brazilian banquet barbecue from The Flaming Gourmand for their wedding breakfast. The bride said, “It’s food we love and it tied in well with our relaxed theme.” They enjoyed picana steak, maple chicken, and chimichurri portabello mushrooms. In the evening they served posh dogs with caramelised onions and Cheshire cheese sauce, followed by dessert from an ice cream van.
REAL WEDDINGS MEANT TO BE
FROM LIVERPOOL WITH LOVE
Nicola and Adam exchanged their vows at the spectacular Metropolitan Cathedral, Liverpool, followed by celebrations at The Shankly Hotel. Nicola said of their venue styling, “Our table plan was held by a silverframed mirror, and the place and table names were all coordinated in the same colour palette and design as our invitations. We also had orders of service and fans made for the bridal party to keep. The centrepieces were floral domes with tea lights hanging from them. They featured blooms to match the bouquets. There was also a stunning draped top-table design and a lovely floral arch placed at the entrance to the rooftop terrace.” Images: www.matthewrycraft.co.uk
Images: www.matthewrycraft.co.uk
Ashleigh and James exchanged vows at Peckforton Castle, which was styled romantically for the occasion. It had been a long held dream of Ashleigh’s to get married in a castle, so the couple set about viewing several historic venues when they got engaged. LOCAL SHOOT
If, like us, you can’t get enough of the ever-popular bohemian wedding vibe, you won’t want to miss this stunning shoot Images courtesy of Blue Bug Photography
T
he burgeoning trend for bohemian weddings isn’t waning... not evening a little! It’s all about floaty dresses, long hair and pampas grass. We love it, as does the team involved in this fabulous local styled shoot. Living near the seaside on the stunning North Wales cost, these suppliers were keen to show off one of the region’s best features – the wide sandy beaches. The Beaches Hotel was selected as the shoot location, thanks
to its gorgeous position on a long promenade with views to die for. “It’s genuinely the perfect location for a beachthemed wedding,” says photographer Sally Smart of Blue Bug Photography. The vision featured a large pampas grass arch, a flower crown, dried flower arrangements and a natural colour palette with a relaxed vibe to complement the setting. We hope you’ll agree – it was a raging success! 39

Amy also makes gorgeous personalised signage such as seating plans, welcome signs and hand-painted jackets. “These are always a talking point at weddings and a way to show your personality through quotes or a quirky leather jacket,” she says.
Wirral-based Ling Warlow, founder of Paper by Dragonfly (formerly Dragonfly Couture Stationery), is a paper artist who designs and produces stationery for weddings and special events. She describes her style as colourful and illustrative, and loves nothing more than using tactile printing techniques such as letterpress combined with beautiful hand-finishing. This talented artisan has also been busy developing new skills to bring you stunning, handmade paper flowers. Botanically realistic, these beautiful blooms must be seen to be believed. A sustainable alternative to fresh-flower bouquets, they allow you to include any bloom in any colour, all year round. Plus, incredibly made from nothing more than paper, wire and a dab of glue they’ll last forever. Al fresco OUTDOOR WEDDINGS
FIESTA
We celebrate outdoor weddings with a host of tips and tricks from the experts
T
he summer might be done and dusted for this year, but we know that all you super-organised couples out there are planning for your 2022 nuptials and beyond. So, let’s look forward to the return of the sun with a celebration of al fresco wedding days. Blessed with some of the UK’s most beautiful countryside here in Cheshire and Merseyside, local wedding venues offer some truly wonderful green settings for you to make the most of. Although staring at the totally blank canvas of an empty marquee or field may be slightly overwhelming at first, arm yourself with inspiration aplenty and you’ll soon be able to build the open-air day of your dreams. So, we asked the region’s suppliers to lend us their exciting ideas with top tips to get you started out on the right foot.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC

Stellar autumnal wedmin advice from those in the know
RAIN OR SHINE
We’re getting married in the autumn and our only concern is the unpredictability of the weather. How can we prepare for the worst (but hope for the best) when it comes to our photographs? It’s true, you can never depend on the weather in the UK, but it does create an opportunity for some amazing photos. Come rain, shine, fog or snow there’s magic to be captured. A professional photographer should come prepared for all scenarios ensuring we get the best from your big day regardless of what the British weather throws at us. Everyone would love to have the sun shining, but try not to let
what you can’t control affect your big day. Your photographer’s experience should give you confidence that only the best photos will emerge whatever the weather, indeed I’ve captured weddings in all conditions. For example, this image was taken in the Peak District, so there’d normally be a breathtaking vista behind the couple, but we had to innovate and use the flashes to good effect. I believe the foggy background actually puts more focus on the couple, which is what we want to achieve for your special day. Daniel Cooper | www.danielcooperphotography.com
COSY HUES
www.kelliannephotographer.co.uk
We’d like a stationery suite to complement our autumn theme, but are keen to avoid the orange-led colour palette one might traditionally associate with the season. What would you suggest? When I think of autumn, I think of all the rich earthy colours that reflect nature and the environment around us at the time. I like to use soft textures and natural tones. Mustard, rusty reds, deep oranges and golds all complement each other perfectly. I really love a gold- or copper- foiled suite with rich colour accents, dark navy, rich plums and deep teals. This season is a time of slowing down after a busy year when the evenings start to draw in and we crave cosiness. I like to reflect what autumn means to me in my designs and you should do the same, as your inspiration may be totally different to mine. You do you! Natalie Burrows | www.jellypress.co.uk

SEASONAL SWEET TREATS
How can we reflect the autumn season in our wedding cake? With the first half of 2021 continuing to be a challenge for so many couples, we’ve seen a trend towards downsized wedding cakes due to uncertainty over guests attending. But this has meant a comeback for cupcakes and mini cakes as they can be taken away or sent to loved ones who can’t make it. There are still some dominant designs that are here to stay for 2021 and 2022. The buttercream wedding cake for example can be adapted according to the time of year by dressing it with seasonal flowers and foliage. Autumn bakes always look stunning with various shades of green and white blooms, along with some willow and berry fillers We’re also seeing an increase in painted cakes. Having your cake adorned in a painted scene depicting something special to you means you get a unique bigday bake that becomes a talking point for years to come. Debbie Fenton | https://loislittlecakecompany.com
EVERLASTING LOVE
What should we be looking for in our wedding rings to ensure that perfect balance of longevity and sentimentality? First of all, it’s a good idea to consider the metal used to make your wedding rings. Platinum is the most popular white metal as it doesn’t tarnish and is incredibly durable ensuring it will still look great after many years of a long and happy marriage. Be careful if opting for yellow gold though, as depending on the carat it will be an alloy containing copper or silver content, so the hardness of the ring will differ depending on the balance of each. Your jeweller will be able to advise you further on this. As a rule a good one won’t sell flimsy rings that aren’t hard wearing. We gauge ours on the weight. For something with added sentimental value, why not look into having a piece of inherited jewellery melted down and crafted into bespoke wedding bands? For example, your grandparents rings can be remodelled with new metal added for strength or perhaps a colour change. Alternatively, we offer workshops where you can learn to create your own rings. You’ll be guided throughout the process by a professional and what could be more meaningful than knowing this all-important token of commitment was crafted by the very person you’ll be promising to spend forever with? The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker
TRIED & TESTED Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews
Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey
Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson 67

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with advice from our local professionals
SUPPORT NETWORK I have a very full bust. What styles will suit me and how can I get the right support? Kendal says: For a fuller bust we recommend a gown with more structure in the bodice. This could come in the form of extra boning, a solid lining or additional straps. To minimise the bust it helps to take the eye up and out, so a strap at the shoulder or at the point of the shoulder with a gentle V-neckline works beautifully. If you can team this with a silhouette that elongates the torso and highlights the waist, such as a mermaid or A-line, you’ll feel amazing!
STAYING POWER My make-up rarely stays in place for a full working day, so I’m worried about it looking worse for wear by the speeches. What can I do to avoid this? Rebecca says: If a professional make-up artist as created your big-day look you’ve no need to worry! There are so many layers involved when we take the reins, as opposed to a normal day when you apply your own make-up. All the brushes we use are teamed up with primers and high-quality products to help it stay in place from dawn to dusk. My top tip would be to make sure you know your skin type so your artist can use the right products especially for you, and ask them to finish with a setting spray. Plus, it’s a good idea to keep a pressed powder to hand throughout the day to stay on top of any extra shine.

SILKY SMOOTH
Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty
Tim McBaj
It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.
B
orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 72
liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!
Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant
and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.
“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and
sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.
FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would
74
be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them
and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.
I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.
Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.
How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.
Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.
The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.
To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.
To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 75

Eco & Sustainability Credentials: Santani has been designed in such a way so that neither air-conditioning nor heating is required reducing energy consumption by about 70%. Most of the buildings are constructed on stilts that allows for natural thermal flow to cool the rooms and this structure also ensures there is minimal contact with the earth below. The whole spa is built underground which provides natural cooling too – almost 80% of the wood used for both structural elements and furniture is recycled. Rates: Three nights at Santani Resort & Spa starts from £2,660 (double room, half-board basis including wellness package and experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights).
Kalundewa Retreat
An eco-retreat tucked away in a lush 100 acres in Dambulla drawing its beauty from the mystic Kalundewa Mountain range. The isolated farming community contribute to the hotel resulting in a handful of eco-friendly dwellings to minimise human impact on the intricate ecosystems that flourish in the forest, lakes and waterway. Eco & Sustainability Credentials: The retreat blends both agriculture and tourism, and contributes to the welfare of its neighbouring rural farming community. Its vision is to go 100% organic with all cultivation processes. Currently 100% of the electricity consumed is generated by solar panels. Irrigation is via restored waterways and windmill-pumped ground water, and the natural well feeds spring water into the main pool. Rates: Three nights at Kalundewa Retreat starts from £1,850 (double room, full-board basis including experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights).
Leopard Trails
This bespoke, luxury, tented safari operates within the buffer zones of both Wilpattu and Yala National Parks with the aim of minimising its impact on the environment. Its existence is to showcase a true wilderness experience but prioritise above all else, the protection of nature. Eco & Sustainability Credentials: Leopard Trails works hand in hand with the local community with campsite staff and drivers handpicked from the local community; fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood and other provisions are sourced from local suppliers and, where possible, equipment is manufactured and maintained within the local area. The team actively discourage the use of plastic water bottles and only use reusable stainless steel thermos flasks. Many rangers are either qualified in eco matters or have been responsible for implementing award-winning ecotourism and sustainability initiatives. Rates: Three nights at Leopard Trails starts from £2,660 (double room, full board-basis including experiences). A 14-night bespoke itinerary starts from £6,995pp (price based on two adults sharing and includes accommodation on mix of half- and full-board basis, experiences and personal chauffeur. Excludes flights). All properties can be booked as part of a tailor-made holiday to Sri Lanka with Sri Lanka Bespoke: www.srilanka-bespoke.com 79
