Happy Halloween A
s the sun sets on summer, I’ve compiled an action-packed issue for you and it promises to be a great read! I love planning a magazine for this time of year, with Halloween and bonfire night inspiration for celebrations. The real wedding of Natalie and Harry caught my eye as soon as bride Natalie got in touch with me because of its quirky Halloween theme and purple colour palette – turn to page 40 to read all about it. If you’d like to see your special day gracing the pages of Your Devon & Cornwall Wedding then please do email me at claire.ridley@countyweddingmagazines.com There’s fabulous fashion (which is one of my favourite parts of the job, browsing all of the wonderful bridal dresses that land in my inbox), big-day beauty ideas and honeymoon inspiration (now that we’re allowed to travel again, yay!) So before the build-up to Christmas and New Year, which will be the inspiration behind our next issue, sit back and enjoy the wedding planning journey with me. Until the next issue,
Retro wheels were made for me so when this pretty picture of the newly refurbished Honey dropped into my inbox, I was in awe! She’s a 1960 VW Split Screen VW – turn to page nine to read all about it.

Set inside Plymouth’s oldest building, the medieval Prysten House, Platos is Plymouth’s latest new opening by chef Benjamin Palmer and his wife Frankie. Celebrating all things sunshine, the two-storey restaurant marries The Med and the medieval serving full-flavoured, colourful and exciting Mediterranean-style small plates, wines and cocktails in a dramatic and historical setting with private dining rooms available for special events. Benjamin tells us, “Lockdown gave us the perfect opportunity to work on our ideas for Platos and refine the concept into something we both love. We knew that we wanted to serve small plates and give our diners colour and variety, and our love of holidaying in the Mediterranean made everything slip into place. This is the food we love to eat when we travel. Our holiday home in Greece offered inspiration, not only in terms of food but also generous and warm hospitality and we wanted to inject a bit of that into Plymouth – Britain’s Ocean City.” The Mediterranean-inspired design and colours include deep oranges and greens, pulling diners into a feeling of sunshine and warmth both inside the restaurant and outside in the magical, fairy-lit courtyard where a DJ regularly performs. The menu celebrates the very best ingredients sourced locally such as Porthilly oysters, local mussels and lobsters from the South Coast, Spanish hams carved theatrically at the bar, Duroc chorizo and Iberico pork ribs. Favourite dishes include lobster croquetas served with prestige caviar, spiced cauliflower from the grill with Sichuan yoghurt, white local market fish roasted with Duroc chorizo, Iberico pork ribs from the grill cooked in Plato’s sauce and Plato’s cheesecake with Pedro Ximénez sherry to finish. SHARPHAM DAIRY LAUNCHES CHEESE CELEBRATION CAKES
Sharpham Dairy has launched cheese celebration cakes perfect for weddings. Hand-crafted on the banks of the River Dart, these towers of cheese offer a choice of nine multi-award-winning varieties to choose from, plus Peter’s Yard sourdough crackers and new Sharpham chutneys. A simple three-tier creation or an extravagant six-tier tower crowned with a heart-shaped piece of cheese at the top make great wedding cake options and the expert team help couples pick a balance of flavours and characteristics, from a velvety semi-hard rustic with elderflower notes, to a smooth, silky brie. Couples are welcome to visit Sharpham Dairy, located in the beautiful Dart Valley, to meet the cheesemakers and decide which varieties work best. If that’s not possible, a cheese taster box will be sent in the post. Co-owner Nicky Parsons tells us, “Our cheeses are all handmade in Devon, with each small batch unique to Sharpham Estate. Flavours, aromas and textures are influenced from the terroir here thanks to the rich variety of grasses and herbs that grow in the Dart Valley.” To order, visit www.sharphamcheese.co.uk.
“We just wanted to say it was lovely to meet you both on Saturday and a huge thank you for providing us with Hank and Honey for our wedding, they are just adorable vehicles and made the day even more special.”Joshua & Charlotte

TWO DRIFTERS DISTILLERY UNVEIL REBRAND AND A NEW BOTTLE DESIGN
Two Drifters Distillery, the world’s first carbon-negative distillery, is on a mission to become as sustainable as possible, with its new rebrand reflecting the brand’s eco-friendly ethos. Design agency Here Design have been instrumental in revamping Two Drifters’ new lighter and British-made bottle, which features a natural cork with FSC wooden top, 100% compostable tamper seal and paper labels made from 95% sugarcane fibre and 5% hemp and linen with a plant-based adhesive. The new design uses eye-catching colours with hues of bright green, orange and blue against an illustration of a boat that pays homage to the company’s Devonshire roots. The spirit hasn’t changed, with the brand’s unique and award-winning rum still made with a carbon-negative footprint in a bespoke warehouse near Exeter Airport. The range can be enjoyed simply over ice, or used as a base for many cocktails. Favourites, especially for weddings, include the Overproof Spiced Pineapple Rum (think rich and fruity with irresistible notes of ripe pineapple, salted caramel and creme brûlée) and the equally popular Lightly Spiced Rum (a warming and aromatic spirit boasting notes of vanilla, chai tea, toffee apple and delicate clove). The Signature Rum is a full-bodied and buttery spirit with rich notes of treacle, toffee, ginger and Muscovado sugar and the Pure White Rum offers a crisp and clean taste with fresh notes of vanilla, apple, white pepper and lime zest. The company’s vibrant new website with low-carbon emission technology, and a dedicated educational section on CO2 emissions, has also been launched. Set to solidify their position as the world’s most sustainable rum, the carbon-neutral Shopify e-commerce site is now home to Two Drifters merchandise. To shop, visit www.twodriftersrum.com
Tarquin Cornish Gin launches new yuzu and lime Japanese-inspired flavour
Tarquin’s Cornish Gin has recently unveiled its yuzu and lime flavour, a limited-edition Japanese-inspired spirit with yuzu zest and fresh lime for a vibrant flavour. There are tasting notes of wild pomelo, cherry blossom and candied lime, and flavours of zesty yuzu, orange blossom and soft juniper with a finish of lime sorbet, eastern spice and fresh tangerine. The exotic yuzu citrus fruit adds a beautiful and exotic edge to gin and when balanced with whole limes. Tarquin Leadbetter, founder and master distiller at Southwestern Distillery tells us, “I enjoy trying new things and pushing the boundaries of taste and flavour, it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with making gin in the first place, anything is possible!” Tarquin continues, “Yuzu is such a remarkable fruit, this very special gin makes an outstanding gin and tonic or yuzu spritz garnished with fresh mint and cucumber!” To shop, visit www.tarquinsgin.com
FLAPJACKERY WINS FOUR GOLDS AT TASTE OF THE WEST AWARDS
Flapjackery, offering artisan flapjacks handmade in Devon, has just received four Golds at the Taste of the West Awards, the South West’s prestigious food, drink and hospitality awards. The four luxurious products awarded were a lemon drizzle flapjack, peanut butter brownie flapjack (made using Freda’s ‘Gold’ award-winning peanut butter), traditional flapjack and burnt caramel and sea salt-flavoured flapjack. Co-founder Carol Myott tells us, “We set up Flapjackery six years ago following lots of comments about how good our flapjacks tasted. The last couple of years have not been easy because of the lockdown, but we have kept going and are delighted to have received these awards which are testament to the team’s hard work and determination.” Fellow co-founder Sally Jenkin adds, “These flapjacks are hugely popular at our new Flapjackery stores in Wells and Minehead as well as our first shop in Tavistock.” Judged by the most astute palates of chefs, buyers, retailers and food writers, the Taste of the West Awards is a renowned accreditation for artisan producers, cafés and restaurants, providing an opportunity for them to gain recognition for their products and services. The awards celebrate the quality, integrity and provenance of food in the region and seek to promote local produce that goes above and beyond in terms of quality and taste. The unmistakable logo is a clear signal for an outstanding product that has met rigorous judging criteria. Order online at www.flapjackery.co.uk 13

eorgia and Alex met at university through a mutual friend. “We had briefly crossed paths during the first year at a birthday party and Alex felt a spark,” Georgia tells us. “He told me that he found me funny and outgoing but I was in a relationship at the time. During our third year, I became single so Alex kept asking me out for several months until I gave in - it’s the best thing I ever did! I was attracted to him because of his kindness and thoughtfulness but he’s also daring and a lot braver than me at trying new adventures!” The couple became engaged on New Year’s Day at the beautiful Burrator Reservoir with their Basset Hound, Dylan, in tow. “Alex got Dylan to lay down and stay quiet during the proposal which is an achievement in itself getting him to obey!” Georgia says. “It wasn’t a complete surprise because I knew that Alex was having my engagement ring created from my great aunt’s ring, but I didn’t know when or where. It was the perfect proposal “Our photographer, because it was in a scenic setting and very private.” fantastic in getting

The couple chose to marry at The Green in Cornwall, a venue with converted barns on the grounds built with large windows boasting panoramic views across the moors. “It’s a beautiful place and having grown up in Liskeard, I know the area well,” Georgia explains. “We both knew that we wanted a venue that could host everything in one place so it ticked all the boxes. There were various choices for the ceremony, depending on the weather (we were so lucky to have some sun in February) and the staff were friendly, communicative and an absolute joy to have help plan our wedding. I would recommend them to anyone and the venue offers all-inclusive prices.” The couple decided on a purple and silver colour theme with decorative touches to complement the rustic setting. “Our table plan was a ladder donated by a friend displaying the details in pretty frames,” Georgia tells us. Our place names were written on cards from Great Ormond Street Hospital, where I spent a lot of time as a child, with a donation to them creating part of our favours along with small vanilla heart-shaped soaps.” The couple’s centrepieces were a nod to the rustic venue that used to be a Yarg cheese farm. “We displayed milk jugs filled with flowers alongside hessian-covered jam jars and tea lights all displayed on log slices,” Georgia explains. “We chose seasonal green, white and purple flowers for these arrangements along with those in our bouquets which also contained lilies, my favourite variety,” Georgia says. “We used milk bottles containing single-stem flowers to line the aisle and then transferred them to the tables later. We also displayed giant wooden light-up LOVE letters on the dancefloor, wooden wicker hearts on the backs of the chairs for the wedding breakfast and purple and silver paper lanterns suspended from the ceiling.” Georgia and Alex chose a white buttercream cake decorated with purple sugar roses with the top tier being a fruit cake which they could send to guests who were unable to attend. Their delicious catering was provided by the team at the venue. “It Green was included scones for canapés, a cake of cheese and pasties for evening food,” Georgia tells us.

LOOKING THE PART
Georgia chose the Mori Lee dress style no 2808. “It was so flattering and because we were having a winter wedding, I wanted a gown with plenty of layers,” she says. “It isn’t my normal style - I would say I’m more bohemian - but I tried it on and loved it. I accessorised it with a pair of blue shoes from Irregular Choice and a cubic zirconia tennis bracelet, a pendant necklace and a pair of diamond stud earrings that were a gift from Alex on the day. I also had a fingertip-length veil and a hair comb decorated with pearls and crystals in a flower design.” Alex wore a three-piece tweed suit teamed with a purple tie. “He chose a blue-check grey waistcoat whereas the groomsmen had blue tweed waistcoats so that he stood out,” Georgia says. “Our bridesmaids looked stunning in their purple dresses which we let them choose because it was important that they all felt comfortable on the day.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple chose a local band called Triptych to perform during the evening. “They played songs from different eras with a modern twist and got everybody up and dancing,” Georgia explains. “They even invited me to sing a song, despite my poor singing voice, and one of the band members ‘wives is a watercolour artist so he commissioned a painting of our dog Dylan as a wedding gift from the band which I found very touching and thoughtful. We also gave our guests sparklers to enjoy during the evening and did a walk-through with everyone holding them which was a magical moment.”

anielle and George met at work in The Elephant by Simon Hulstone, a restaurant in Torquay. “George was one of the chefs and I worked as a waitress,” Danielle tells us. “He had moved to Devon from London and didn’t know anyone in the area. He’d spend his days off going to the cinema or eating dinner on his own so I offered to join him as a friend. After the first few cinema outings, I soon realised how caring and funny he was. We’d flirt with each other at work and romantic feelings started to develop but we didn’t want to make things official because George was planning to go travelling. When this time came, we realised that we didn’t want things to end so we decided to embark on a long-distance relationship. We spent five months apart before I flew out to Bali for a two-week holiday. We then had a further six months enjoying a long-distance romance before we were reunited in Australia for New Year’s Eve. After travelling around Australia, New Zealand and China together, we returned to the UK to start saving for a house deposit.” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal. “George planned a secret trip away for our fifth anniversary,” Danielle explains. “I didn’t know where we were going but I had my suspicions that this might be when he’d pop the question - and I was right! He had booked us a beautiful cottage in the Cotswolds and planned every last detail of the weekend, even down to the postcodes for car parks because he knows I get panicked if there is nowhere to park! On the day he proposed, he took me to Bourton-on-the-Water for a cream tea and a stroll around. Then we drove to Arlington Row, which is probably the most beautiful street that I have ever walked along, and on our return to the cottage, George suggested that we enjoy some drinks. He played a selection of our favourite songs before getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him. The entire day was perfect from start to finish and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.” Here, Danielle tells us all about their lemonthemed day at Rockbeare Manor.

We live in Kent but my family live in Devon so we viewed plenty of venues in both locations. Roc kbeare Manor stood out to us as soon as arrived. I purchased a lace overlay dress by the designer Cathleen Jia in a sample sale from Heart Aflutter Bridal Boutique based in London during the first lockdown. It was three sizes too big for me but I adored the lace pattern and was confident that I would get it altered. I found a great seamstress, Gill, through a shop called Story of my Dress and we had a Zoom call to discuss the alterations and also the creation of a slip dress to wear underneath. George took my measurements so that Gill could start making it and thankfully the lockdown restrictions eased so I was able to have a face-to-face appointment with her to try it on before the wedding. Our beautiful bride smaids looked stunn ing in their yellow floor -length dresses. We purchased these in the sale a year befor e the wedding and the gir ls ended up swappin g sizes because one of them had a growth sp urt and the other beca me pregnant!
George and our groomsmen all wore pale grey, slim-fit suits that we had to order online because the lockdown prevented us from being able to visit the shops.
The speeches were a very memorab le part of our day. I was looking forward to hearing them.

atalie and Harry met on the dating app Tinder and enjoyed their first date on bonfire night in 2014. “We sat on Brixham Breakwater with some sparklers watching the fireworks and the rest, as they say, is history,” Natalie tells us. The couple booked their wedding in September 2018, before they became engaged, because they knew that they wanted to get married on Halloween in 2020. “Harry proposed to me in March 2019 a few days before our daughter’s 1st birthday,” Natalie explains. “We were visiting the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth and although we already had our wedding booked, he did manage to surprise me!”

The couple chose the Berry Head Hotel & Apartments located in Brixham, Devon, for their special day. “I’ve enjoyed plenty of family parties at the hotel and it’s such a lovely place,” Natalie says. “We live in Brixham “We were both more excited too, so it was perfect. I stayed at the hotel the night before and my brother-in-law, than nervous on our special collected Harry in his classic car on day and just so happy that we Alex, the morning of the wedding.” were able to get married on the Because of the restrictions in place at the time, the couple wasn’t allowed to host date we had originally planned a large reception so they invited 15 loved to.” – Natalie and Harry ones to celebrate with them. “Because it was Halloween, the room where we had our ceremony was already decorated for a function taking place that evening which we were really happy with and they did check it was ok with us first,” Natalie explains. “We didn’t need many additional decorations so chose fake pumpkins as our table centrepieces and Love Hearts place names which doubled up as our favours.” The couple and their guests enjoyed a meal after their ceremony that was pre-booked from the mouth-watering menu. “My sister,

LOOKING THE PART “I purchased my dress from Pretty Smithy Bridal located in Paignton,” Natalie tells us. “It was called Brooklyn and originally had sleeves so I had it altered and had a bolero made to match. I chose it because it suited my style. I wore a pair of lace heels for the ceremony and then changed into white Vans trainers after. My friend Stevie Clark did my make-up for me which looked wonderful. Harry wore all black and his tie and waistcoat featured a subtle pattern. He finished the look with a purple buttonhole.” The couple didn’t have any groomsmen because of the restrictions but they did have bridesmaids who wore dark purple knee-length dresses to tie in with the Halloween theme.”
“Our daughter Ember was twoand-a-half years of age at the time and kept getting between us when we were trying to say our vows - she didn’t like us holding hands!” – Natalie and Harry
“We visited Deerpark in Liskeard, Cornwall for our honeymoon. It was originally booked for the weekend after the wedding but we had to move it twice due to the lockdown. We ended up going just after Harry’s 30th birthday for five days. It was just us for the first two days and then Ember joined us for a familymoon - it was great.” – Natalie and Harry 43
TOP TIP: “Try not to please everyone because you won’t - just enjoy your day, it will be perfect.” – Natalie and Harry

ew wedding venue The Grain Store nestled in the South Hams provided the beautiful backdrop for this styled shoot. The industrial copper feel of the venue, which offers three different licensed areas for the ceremony, was decorated with a nod to the wild outdoors of the surrounding Devonshire countryside with items made from reclaimed and recycled wood and copper. Nixie James-Scott from Unique Ceremonies created a special cord in copper colours, silver and sequins for the hand-fasting ceremony and Pretty Social Grazing complemented the rustic feel of the location in the statement grazing platters presented on wooden boards. The final finishing touches included a metal cake stand and natural foliage. Images courtesy of Freeformimages Photography 55

FABULOUS FLORALS
Sustainable tips and tricks from green-fingered experts

Marina Law is the creative talent behind Artem Florum, a Devon-based florist. She creates beautiful floral designs for weddings and events throughout Devon and Cornwall.
Marina tells us, “There’s something quite magical about being a florist because it connects with nature and all its beauty. It’s now more important than ever to take extra care and time to run a business that’s sustainable and protects our natural world as much as possible. Something to consider should always be the distance our flowers travel to arrive in the hands of our couples getting married. At Artem Florum and From the Wild Floristry & Botanical Design (owned and run by Alice Wright who Marina regularly collaborates with on weddings and shoots and who recently won the Muddy Stilettos Award for the Best Florist) we try to buy flowers as locally as possible using wholesalers such as Highcroft Nurseries in Cornwall and other smaller local growers such as Greenacre Flowers near Exeter. Buying locally means we’re keeping the flower footprint lower.” Marina continues, “Another important factor is using seasonal flowers in our designs that can be challenging at times due to our unpredictable weather patterns in the UK but we try to take advantage of seasonal varieties where we can. Peonies are abundant in May and June so these featured heavily in Chloe and Matthew’s micro wedding at the stunning Brickhouse Vineyard wedding venue in Mamhead, Exeter (pictured).” Marina explains the use of floral foam. She says, “The modernisation of floristry has introduced singleuse plastics which includes floral foam that’s made of carcinogenic materials which further break down into microplastics that contaminate our water. We need to look at using alternatives like Sideau which is a 100% natural floral foam made from basalt that’s completely biodegradable and can be reused as a potting soil which is great for growing all types of plants due to its nutritional composition. It’s a more costly alternative to the traditional floral foam but is a small price to pay for a greener environment.” Marina describes how weddings have come full circle with the mechanics of floral installations. She says, “We’re reverting to older techniques to create large-scale designs. Instead of using traditional floral foam, we’re opting for the greener moss and chicken wire mechanics to hold designs together and add a base to attach flowers and foliage to. This takes more time to construct but it’s worth it. There are many other things that we can do such as using twine to tie bouquets, opting for eco flower wrap, replacing ribbons with natural raffia and string and choosing to use paper stem wrap. It’s a case of being more mindful about our techniques and the materials we choose to create our designs. By making small adjustments every day, we can contribute to help protect our planet and establish a greener, sustainable future.”

Holly Briers and Gary Dart own Floral Art Devon, a specialist wedding and events floral designer based in Torquay with more than 25 years of experience creating arrangements using the highest quality fresh flowers. Holly and Gary tell us, “We work continuously on evolving our floral business to be more environmentally friendly by recycling and reusing as many products as possible. We always recommend to our couples to pick seasonal blooms when deciding on their big-day flowers. We’re always looking for, and trying out, new products that are natural-based, biodegradable and eco-friendly. We feel this is important to our couples and our business to be kinder to our planet.”

beautiful centrepieces which can then be gifted to friends and family after the wedding. If you have set your heart on fresh flowers then try to be as seasonal as possible. Work with what’s available when you’re getting married, and trust your florist to create something which truly celebrates that.” Simon agrees with florist Marina Law, adding, “If being as environmentally friendly as possible is important to you, then consider going foam-free. Traditional floral foam, which is used in many arrangements, is single-use plastic. It’s also expensive, messy to work with, and heavy when wet, so ask your florist if they can create something without it - they’ll probably be only too delighted!

Simon tells us, “The demand for more sustainable and ethically sourced flowers is having a big impact on how couples design their wedding blooms. Hashtags such as #grownnotflown #nofloralfoam and #seasonalflowers are just a few of many on social media platforms highlighting the trend towards a more sustainable approach in wedding floristry. This is helping couples make informed choices about the beauty of seasonally available and locally grown varieties for their celebrations.” Simon continues, “Herbaceous, garden-style arrangements are hugely popular, but that doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to only having cut flowers. Flowering plants and fragrant herbs make

FLOWERS H. Watts florist located in Plymouth is owned by Sally Edgcumbe. Along with her talented team, she provides a personal and bespoke service for weddings and events, delivering to Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Sally tells us, “At H. Watts, we understand how important it is to work towards, and develop, sustainable practices of design in the floristry industry, from sourcing materials and bearing in mind seasonality, to packaging and minimising waste. As a whole, it’s refreshing and hopeful to see so many florists and professionals within the industry committing to sustainability, in particular when it comes to wedding arrangements. Wedding work not only requires a higher number of materials, but also the best quality flowers and additional labour – from the creation to transportation. Therefore, we continuously work to incorporate sustainable practices into our wedding flowers to minimise our environmental impact throughout the entire process, while still ensuring that our clients receive the designs of their dreams. We support our customers and advise them on flower seasonality while also offering locally grown blooms which not only ensures the flowers look their best and last longer, but it minimises transport and production processes and eliminates the need for climate-controlled growing conditions, both of which can harm the environment.” Sally continues,” For all our weddings, we use sustainable and biodegradable packaging for storage and transport and strive to use sustainable artificial materials – for example, to tie the design – or design mechanics that are either biodegradable or reusable wherever possible. Additionally, we aim to minimise waste by using leftover or broken materials in other designs, such as gift work. We’re continuously working to learn about, and develop, our sustainable practices to better our commitment to creating more eco-conscious wedding flowers.”

EXPERT ADVICE
Our experts answer your questions
YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY
We want to write our wedding vows. Can you offer us any tips? Meet the expert: Sabine Smith, the owner of Perfect Day Ceremonies, is a Cornwall-based independent event celebrant covering weddings throughout both regions.
OWN IT You know what the other person means to you and why you’re marrying them so you can share an anecdote but keep it short. What did you feel when you first met them and how do they make you feel now? What do you love most about them? How do you see your future and what do you promise to do, or be, in the life that you create together?
Sabine says: For some couples, it seems quite daunting writing their vows and reading them in front of their guests, however for some, it’s a chance to declare their love and devotion in front of their loved ones. Getting married in a register office or church doesn’t give you the freedom to choose your vows. With a celebrant-led ceremony, you can leave out the traditional ones if you wish and create your own, which adds an intimate dynamic to your day. Here are my top tips on how to create vows that are personal to you both and that allow you to express your feelings for one another. REFLECT ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP The vows you write should reflect your relationship. Some couples create humorous ones by saying things like ‘I’ll still love you even if you take longer in the bathroom than I do’ but you might want to underline the seriousness of the commitment you’re making by using a passage from a meaningful song, book or poem. Make sure that you choose the tone that feels right for your relationship and is authentic. NAIL THE INTRO Sometimes this is easier said than done but the opening line should be a short introduction as to why you’ve chosen to write your promises. Traditional vows have their place but your wedding might not be built on these.
BREATHE AND RELAX Creating and delivering your vows can be a daunting task but your celebrant will help you relax and they might even suggest reading them for you. I remember making a mistake while saying my vows during my wedding and it always makes me laugh now when I think of it! If this happens, everyone will be forgiving and will only remember the declaration of the promises you have made to one another. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF Your vows are the wishes, hopes and promises for your future together. Being yourself and being authentic when writing them will ensure that you create meaningful ones. When the ceremony is over, and you have time to reflect, you can keep them printed as a keepsake and maybe even frame them. 07977 561 450 | www.perfectdayceremonies.co.uk www.facebook.com/perfectdayceremonies.co.uk www.instagram.com/perfectdayceremonies

Lewis says: Hiring a professional wedding magician with plenty of tricks up their sleeve is the perfect way to amuse your guests during your reception. There can be a lot of time spent sitting around on the day, with guests waiting for the photographer to finish taking the couple shots and for dinner to be served. Magic is something that everyone can appreciate, from small children to the older generation, and it translates into any language and culture. The shared experience of watching me, and participating in my tricks, can help break the ice with guests who don’t know each other and it’s guaranteed fun, adding the wow factor to any celebration. I specialise in close-up and table magic, performing tricks with cards, coins and rings, as well as illusions, predictions and mind reading. 01752 936 086 | http://lbmagic.uk www.facebook.com/lbmagicuk 65
Can you suggest some ways for us to plan a sustainable winter wedding? Meet the expert: Gemma Halliwell is the owner of West Country Wedding Planner with more than 16 years of experience managing weddings in any location, from marquees on the grounds of a country estate to beautiful barn celebrations, keeping within budget. Along with her team, she also offers on-the-day coordination Gemma says: As wedding planners located and operating throughout the South West, it’s really important to us to help couples plan a more sustainable event. Our top tip is to think reusable - whatever season you’re planning for, hiring items such as glassware can cut down on waste. It’s also a great idea to arrange to collect and recycle wine and
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
Can you suggest some ways for us to create a sustainable winter wedding menu?
Meet the expert: Sarah-Jane Payne is the owner of West Country Caterers, a family-run business offering home-cooked cuisine located in Umberleigh, Devon. Sarah-Jayne says: At West Country Caterers, we pride ourselves in embracing both seasonal and local produce wherever possible. Our suppliers are all based in the West Country which minimises the food travel time. Our menus are designed around using local suppliers and embracing a very British style. Food at this time of the year needs to be warming and packed with flavour. Winter vegetables and herbs from our garden add to the flavour of our home-cooked fayre. We pride ourselves in using suppliers that help to reduce our carbon footprint but still supply great local produce of the best quality. A sample menu for a winter wedding would be caramelised red onion tart with West Country goat’s cheese, Red Ruby Exmoor beef in beer served with a selection of seasonal vegetables, our own sticky toffee pudding recipe for dessert teamed with homemade ice cream, and coffee and Devonshire fudge to finish. 01769 560 473 | www.west-country-caterers.co.uk www.facebook.com/WestCountryCaterers 66
champagne bottles which is a service we have been offering to our clients as part of our post-wedding clear-up. Winter is a great season to display plenty of candles on the tables to create a romantic atmosphere. Vintage candlesticks and cylinder vases can easily be hired and they cut down on having lots of cut flowers on the tables that can go to waste. As well as making sure you can reuse everything from your wedding, you need to consider purchasing a sustainable dress. We work with some amazing pre-loved suppliers that not only offer beautiful gowns and the full boutique experience, they’ll also save you money. 01392 758 220 | www.westcountryweddingplanner.co.uk www.facebook.com/westcountryweddingplanner

Love is in the air
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.
FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would
68
be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them
and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.
I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.
Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.
How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.
Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.
The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.
To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.
To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 69

Romantic sleeves Romance is back in the form of whimsical romantic sleeves. Think billowing bishop sleeves in modern lace fabrics like our Florence backless lace gown. Modern mix-and-match separates With sustainability at the forefront of everyone's minds, many brides are looking for outfits offering longevity that can be worn again long after they say 'I do'. Our Harper luxury crepe trousers paired with the Betty cropped bustier and topped with our Nirvana sequin lace crop are ideal choices for this.
The return of the ballgown The ballgown has been given an update for 2022 with the use of bold lace fabrics and corset detailing inspired by lingerie designs. Our Iris gown made with glitter tulle lace in an oversized floral design depicts just this.

May is a gown by Essense of Australia, it's a simple strapless mermaid-style wedding dress with a pointed sweetheart neckline.
Adena by Justin Alexander looks set to be a popular style with its chiffon A-line skirt and beaded scallop bodice and cap sleeves.
This is Clementine by Lillian West, a lace dress with bell-shaped sleeves and an elegant criss-cross back detail.
I love this stunning Rosette ballgown by the designer Maggie Sottero. It's a showstopper with its long sleeves and exquisite pearl beading. Our Max navy suit (pictured) and Wilson suit by Marc Darcy are also available in children's sizes 1 -14 years, as is the Ted suit by Cavani (also pictured).
This pretty sparkly tulle ballgown is called Barley by Sincerity and has a daring plunging neckline. Ann Pascoe, who owns Manor Fashions located in Helston town centre in Cornwall, tells us how the trend for next year for special occasion wear and mother-of-the-bride outfits is moving away from the classic dress and bolero or jacket combo and more towards long-sleeved gowns. A jacket isn't always needed for celebrations during the summer season but dresses teamed with long coats are still popular for the cooler months. Hats are out of fashion while discs on headbands are very much in. 72
This is a flared A-line dress with an overlay of lurex-embossed lace. The three-quarter sleeves mean that the shoulders and arms are covered.
SAY HI: 01752 558 858, www.prudencegowns.com www.facebook.com/prudencegowns www.instagram.com/prudencegownsplymouth This design enjoys a dipped hem and a 50s-style neckline which we will be seeing more of next year. Neutral colours are still in fashion but more colour is being introduced for 2022 with fuller skirts and dipped hems revealing a contrasting lining.

The Roaring Twenties, The Jazz Age and all things Deco-inspired are strong ongoing trends. The sheer fun and freedom of the 1920s is what was so appealing from that era and is reflected in current styles. My Adrienne look, with its sleek silhouette and Guipure lace, has a real 20s feel to it.
With Autumn here, thoughts turn to candlelit evenings, open fires and warm hues. Victoria from my Couture Collection reflects this perfectly with its metallic lace and old-gold silk organza. The bustle and plunging back would suit a stately home venue. 74
A white puffball dress with internal nets and decorated with scattered clematis is perfect for a spring 2022 wedding.
Nature has become so important to many people during the past year and is reflected in current fashion trends. My Caitlin design is a romantic ballerina-style dress with hand-embellished trailing leaves climbing the shoulders and cascading down the back. My Edie dress reflects the current trend for the Edwardian look, with its high collar and voluminous sleeves while the bold patterned lace, stone pink satin and cut-out shoulders make it a contemporary take on this historical era.

THE FINAL FINISHING TOUCHES Steven Whitford is the talented jeweller behind Whitford Jewellery based in West Devon. His inspiration comes from the landscape and natural environment of the West Country. He designs unique wedding and engagement rings, sourcing precious gems internationally and creating fine jewellery that's now considered a collectable heirloom.
Steven tells us, “I work with couples to find gems and produce something that will last a lifetime. My love of ancient antiquity in medieval jewellery, and its symbolism, also influences my work. Archaeologists are still finding these ancient pieces intact so I like the idea that in 3000 years from now, somebody could find something that I made in 2021!” He continues “I can also upcycle old heirlooms and when it comes to rings, I use a specialist wax that helps to show three-dimensional designs so that customers can see how they look before the manufacturing
process begins. I try to work to all budgets so that we can achieve something special and usually I ask customers to bring ideas and influences along to the initial consultation which helps us find inspiration together.”

THAT’S A WRAP
The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. I absolutely love mine – it’s taken the stress out of washing my hair in more ways than one. Check out www.aquishair.co.uk where the AQUIS Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is priced at £30. 88

SILKY SMOOTH
Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. This Is Silk Cleansing Cloths in Noir are £21.99 for three at https://thisissilk.com

The Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (£13.75) comes first in the pamper session, polishing dry and chapped areas for an ultra-soft and smooth pout. Follow with The Rose Butter Lip Mask (£13.75), which contains hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture. Your lipstick will look perfect on the day and your bridal make-up artist will love you for doing all the prep for them! These little heroes are available at www.milanimakeup.co.uk

The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson
GLOW UP!
Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 90

One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews
Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey
Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson
EXPERT ADVICE

WINTER WEDDING
What are the bridal hair and make-up trends for this winter when I’m getting married? Meet the expert: Toni Gogola is a bridal and occasion hair specialist based in South Devon offering a bespoke mobile hair service throughout Devon and Cornwall. Toni says: As we approach the winter months, the most requested styles that I’m being asked for by brides are smooth waves with and without an accent braid. Hollywood waves are also very popular and complement seasonal shades. For the more relaxed bride, a messy up do that looks like she has achieved it herself is always a good choice.

How can I best prep my skin in the lead-up to my wedding ready for flawless make-up and fab photographs on the big day? Meet the expert: Alexis Fraser is the founder of House of Skincare, an appointment-only clinic located in Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot. Alexis says: Preparing your skin for your wedding day is just as important as sourcing the bridal outfit. It takes time, you must find the right therapist for you, and for best results, starting the preparation as early as possible before your big day is key. Don’t just rely on the make-up artist to work their magic, after all, the make-up will only look as good as your skin. With all brides and grooms that visit my clinic, I always discuss the skincare pyramid of needs. This is where you have your essential products which are cleansers, exfoliators, moisturisers and SPF. Then there’s serums, eye creams and face masks, and finally, there’s the at-home skin tools and devices. My top tip is to invest in a mix of the bottom two levels of the pyramid, and if your budget can stretch to adding in the top, then do! Once you’ve established a strong skincare routine at home, you can boost your results with professional clinic treatments. By having a professional treatment, you are regenerating skin cells and stimulating
Nicola says: As the winter approaches and our tans fade, I move from using bronze shades to flushes of pink - I love using a radiant rose-toned blush on the apples of the cheeks. A healthy, rosy complexion brightens the skin tone and creates a glow from within. For festive weddings, one trend springs to mind - a sparkly eye! Champagne tones work perfectly on most eye and skin colours and I use my fingers to apply sparkles rather than a brush because you can build a better colour (with less mess!) I also love a red lip in winter. Preparation and a quality lip liner will be your best friend here, to ensure your lipstick stays on as well as possible and looks as perfect as it can! If that’s not for you then a glossy lip also looks great during the winter when lips tend to be dryer so this will help them look more hydrated and it’ll offset the rosy cheeks and sparkly eyes. new collagen, allowing you to look youthful, glowing, and radiant on your special day. Considering the skin on your body, exfoliating twice a week allows it to become less dull and textured. Moisturising daily is key too, particularly if you’re preparing for a tan application. Lifestyle habits also contribute to how well your skin appears on the day of your wedding so ensure you’re staying hydrated throughout the day and consider taking a collagen supplement to help with top-to-toe skin and joint health. I also recommend taking a probiotic supplement for aiding gut health and fatigue, after all, the planning is the toughest part!
