oo-hoo, it’s proposal season! The festive period delivered its customary influx of newly-engaged couples and with Valentine’s Day a key time for popping the question too, we’re excited for all the lovely weddings to come. The last two years have been tough for everyone, but throughout the restrictions and uncertainty, one of the many shining lights has been the resilience of the wedding industry and couples patiently waiting for their big day. Many had to cancel their plans last year, some multiple times, before finally being able to tie the knot once lockdowns eased. Suppliers have rallied to provide support, pulling out all the stops to help people reschedule and adapt. This issue we’re lucky enough to be able share a tiny snapshot of just some of the wonderful weddings that have taken place in the region – proof, if proof were needed, that love wins no matter what! And for those of you starting out 2022 with a sparkly new ring on your finger, firstly congratulations from your new best friend! We’ll be here throughout the journey with all the latest trends, bridal fashion and beauty insight, local venues, suppliers and wedding news from your doorstep. And when your day comes, don’t forget to stay in touch for your chance to share the joy with our readers. Introducing The Woodyard, a new wedding venue at Worstead Estate in the heart of North Norfolk. The former sawmill has been beautifully restored to reflect its long history and retain the original charm of the Georgian buildings. Set in a stunning location, complete with a lake, walled garden and glorious scenery, it’s available to book with exclusive use across three days for a magical celebration to remember. The Woodyard is made up of a thatched barn surrounded by outbuildings. The Mulberry Room, which once housed the original sawmill, is now a light and airy blank-canvas space to make your own. A charming spot for the ceremony or wedding breakfast, each room can be used in different ways. The newly restored Summerhouse and Lake Island provide an al-fresco setting for romantic ‘I dos’, you can even make your grand arrival by rowing boat. MINI SUPER STAR Back in late summer 2019 we reported on a rising new star on the local wedding scene, Jack Brock the miniature Shetland pony. Since then his fame has spread far and wide, so he now has a new website www.jackbrock.co.uk and email address all of his own. In his role as a four-legged confetti carrier, he’s a real show-stealer kitted out in his leather bridle, decorated harness and wicker baskets filled with fragrant rose petals. The eco-friendly confetti is picked from owner Ali Stearn’s rose garden on the family farm in Wymondham, South Norfolk. “We’ve added more roses to our beds and we collect them on the wedding morning so the petals are as fresh as possible,” adds Ali. As well as Jack’s wedding work, he makes regular public appearances and has raised nearly £25,000 for Dementia charities by visiting care homes in return for donations. “He goes in all their bedrooms and the lifts too! He really is a superstar and a rather special addition to a wedding!” Ali adds. 10
Put together with you in mind, we have an array of wedding packages, starting from £85 per head, to suit all and every vision for your big day. You can chose the package that best suits you whether this be simple & elegant or our all-inclusive package with everything taken care of, the possibilities are endless. Just a short drive away from the heart of Norwich city centre, discover Caistor Hall in the ancient village of Caistor St Edmunds. Set within a magnificent 32-acre estate, the impressive Georgian hall and lawns are surrounded by woodland and beautiful landscaped gardens, providing an idyllic backdrop for those all-important wedding photos. The hall’s rich history dates back as far as the Norman Conquest and it still retains many original features; think beautiful high ceilings, columns, impressive fireplaces and huge sash windows with views across the lawns and gardens. MANNINGTON ESTATE, NR11 7BB 01263 584 175 | www.manningtongardens.co.uk This hidden gem is located in an idyllic spot north of Norwich and just eight miles from the coast. Nestled in beautiful rural surroundings, the stunning gardens provide a picture-picture setting with the impressive
Medieval hall in the background. The hall is still a family home today and, although you can’t marry here, there’s plenty of space in the grounds for a magical marquee reception or you can hire the tearooms for a more intimate celebration.

THE FLINT ROOM, NR1 3HB 07576 760 841| www.theflintroom.co.uk If you’re on the hunt for something different for your wedding ceremony, this Medieval former church is sure to tick the box. Set right in the heart of Norwich, the landmark building dates back to the 15th and 16th century. Beautiful, large windows allow the natural light to flood in and the clock tower, one of the tallest in the city, can be seen from miles around. Iron gates and big oak barrels filled with bushy palms lead to the main entrance and the interior is a magical mix of eclectic and bespoke 20
memorabilia, including a quirky bar and a collection of funky, colourful vintage chairs. As it’s no longer a church, only non-religious ceremonies can be held here, with up to 100 guests. There’s a beautiful ivy flower arch to stand by as you exchange vows and you can toast your new married status at the bar afterwards, before heading off for the reception. What’s more, with so many restaurants and hotels on the doorstep, you won’t have far to go to continue the celebrations!

The food is another big-day winner, with celebrity cook and die-hard Norwich City supporter Delia Smith at the heart of the catering at Carrow Road.
We love... that the happy couple can have their photos taken in the changing rooms, dug out areas and with their guests in the stands.

nna and Sam met online and hit it off straight away. “It was clear from our first date that it was meant to be as we shared so many common interests, a similar sense of humour and mutual love of 80’s music,” says Anna. So when Sam popped the question in June 2019 there was only ever going to be one answer – ‘yes’, of course! “He proposed while we were on holiday in Cyprus in the
privacy of our hotel room with a lovely view of the sunset from our balcony,” remembers Anna. They tied the knot on 24th July, 2021 at Seckford Hall in Suffolk. Anna created their own wedding brand, complete with logo and they opted for a silver, light purple and lilac colour scheme with paisley design elements. Plan B-eautiful Karen and Tayler’s wedding journey took them from the US Sunshine State of Florida back home to Great Yarmouth Images courtesy of Simon Watson Photography
36
REAL WEDDING EARLY DAYS Although Karen and Tayler went to the same sixth form college in Norfolk, they didn’t set eyes on each other until the second year when their film studies groups merged. “When Tayler walked into the room for our first lecture of the year, wearing his bright yellow T-shirt and patterned board shorts, as strange as it sounds, I had a gut feeling that something was going to happen between us from the minute I first saw him! His outgoing, funny personality grabbed my attention instantly,” remembers Karen. Turns out, he was thinking the same and set his sights on pursuing her! “We clicked from the start and the fact that we had many of the same friends and interests helped push things along pretty quickly! Tayler achieved his goal in the end and, after various nights out, we eventually got together and have never looked back!” adds Karen.
POPPING THE QUESTION Tayler proposed during a two-week holiday of a lifetime touring America. A week into the trip, they set off for Anaheim, California home of the original Disneyland and the first Magic Kingdom. “We had visited it a few years before, and I fell in love with the place,” explains Karen. She noticed Tayler was acting a little odd and kept asking her whether it was definitely her favourite Disney park. “I assured him it was, but had no clue why he was so concerned. When we got in, our first stop was the main castle for a photo and as I got my phone ready, I looked at Tayler and he was down on one knee!” At first she thought he was joking and it wasn’t until he took the ring box out of his pocket that she realised it was for real. “I was a bit of a squeaky mess, but I said ‘yes’, of course!”
THE TIME AND THE PLACE They started planning their big day in January 2019 and originally had their hearts set on getting married in Orlanda, Florida, until COVID put pay to that. Everything was booked and ready for them to jet off to the Sunshine State with 35 guests for their dream wedding on November 3rd last year. However, with just six weeks to go, and no news of any let up on travel restrictions to the US, they finally decided to pull the plug. Karen recalls, “When the pandemic first struck we’d just started the planning process and, like many people, we thought that by the time our wedding day arrived it would be well and truly over – how wrong we were! “We had to decide whether to wait it out until the last minute and see if our plans could go ahead, postpone to a future date in 2022, when things would hopefully be more normal, or cancel our destination wedding altogether and bring it home. After much deliberation, we felt we really wanted to get married sooner rather than later. After two years of uncertainty we wanted to be able to feel excited at the thought of getting married and so wedding plan B was born.” After 13 years together, including a six-year engagement, they tied the knot at The Royal Assembly Rooms in Great Yarmouth on 29th October 2021. They had previously booked the venue for a post-wedding celebration on their return from America and luckily were able to get it for their whole day. “We liked the layout of the venue, which is one of the reasons we chose it. It has two bars, a beautiful ceremony room and a bright and spacious banqueting room. We were also able to invite many more of our friends and family who wouldn’t have been able to go if the wedding had been in Florida,” adds Karen. “Our celebrant Francesca Foulsham wrote a beautiful, personalised ceremony filled with memories like the story of how we met and our engagement and she also included a handfasting which was a lovely touch.”
LOOKING THE PART Happily, choosing her dream dress went without a hitch. Karen fell for the first one she put on, a Stella York (style 7066) ivory, vintage-inspired gown complete with train. “City Brides in Norwich couldn’t have been more helpful. I was able to try it on in front of the most important people, my mum and bridesmaids, as they allowed me to do it in two groups due to restrictions on numbers inside the boutique at the time,” she explains. “I loved the fit and flare silhouette which complemented my body shape perfectly and really highlighted one of my greatest assets, my behind! I love a bit of glitz too, so the lace and sparkle helped me

REAL WEDDING to know it was the one instantly.” She bought it off the rack and had it altered by Bryony Woodward at Little Miss Sew ‘n’ Sew. “She did an amazing job and it fitted like a glove on the day,” raves Karen. Her five bridesmaids wore navy blue or pink dresses in different styles to suit them and the wedding party had artificial silk flowers in blush, coral and ivory tones.
“Simon took us for a stroll before the evening reception to get some photos on the seafront. We stood outside the Flamingo amusements and inbetween cars beeping and people shouting out congratulations, he took some absolutely incredible shots!” ALL IN THE DETAIL The wedding décor featured a nod to Disney, subtle Halloween touches and pink, navy and ivory tones throughout. They had a Mickey and Minnie Mouse table plan and their three-tier cake also reflected the theme with a personalised Disney topper. The centrepieces were drinks bottles, collected from house parties over the years, decorated with Halloweenthemed fairylights and filled with pink and ivory artificial flowers set off with silver sequin pumpkins, ivory or pink lanterns on mirrored trays provided by the venue. Personal touches included vodka shot favours for guests to be downed after the best man’s speech and a trick or treat sweet table. After the reception there was chance to relax and chill out at the bar before the party kicked off and everyone hit the dancefloor. “Our fabulous DJ asked us to pick the final songs of the evening and they went down an absolute storm with our friends. We danced so hard I thought the floor might give way!” adds Karen.

ill was reluctant to try online dating until her colleagues persuaded her to give it a go and thank goodness she did! After chatting to Tony they met up and hit it off straight away. “Our first date was at The Six Bells pub in Felsham and we talked for so long we were the last ones in there,” she remembers. Jill was attracted to Tony’s zest for life, his manners and sense of humour while Tony fell for her smile and fun nature. Tony proposed on a romantic weekend away in Cambridge during a brief lifting of lockdown restrictions in December 2020. It was a complete surprise and Jill said ‘yes’ of course! They tied the knot at Woodhall Manor in Suffolk on August Bank Holiday Monday 2021. Read on for Jill’s account of their big day… 43
We loved the tree-lined drive and impressive gates to the beautiful Elizabethan Woodhall Manor house and having the whole venue to ourselves for the whole day and overnight was wonderful.
I loved my ivory beaded dress with puddle train by Art Couture. It took me by surprise when I fell for it, as it was the very first one I tried on!
String quartet Scintilla played before, during and after the ceremony, and included all our favourites and plenty of Coldplay hits creating a lovely fun atmosphere. They also performed during the wedding breakfast and were delighted with the impromptu sing-along to Mr. Blue Sky and Sweet Caroline!
The flowers were a beautiful mix of dusky pink roses, lavender for good luck, pink and white gypsophilia, white spray roses and other delicate blooms. 44
Tony wore a navy blue three-piece suit with an orange tie to stand out.
REAL WEDDINGS
We were delighted to become Mr and Mrs Bates and so happy to see our families and closest friends enjoying the day in and around the manor.
After the ceremony the incredible close-up magician Phil Busby astounded our guests with his magic while they enjoyed drinks and canapés on the terrace.
The table plan reflected our pink and lilac colour scheme and we had fresh foliage across the top. My friend made our three-tier cake, which was decorated with lilac and white icing flowers.
We had straight glass vases in various heights with floating candles and submerged roses as centrepieces.
Our wedding planner Jacqueline at Woodhall Manor knew that we liked fairylights and lanterns. It became a running joke between us and on the day she made sure there were twinkling lights everywhere! 45
The room for the evening party had a mini nightclub vibe, complete with professional stage.
The quirky bar in the main house had a jukebox and dodgem car, which was great for fun photos.
The City Folk played all our favourite tunes and dancefloor-fillers that fitted the mood perfectly and kept everyone dancing all night.

pring is around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a glorious seasonal bridal shoot. Inspired by the beauty of spring blooms, dressmaker Tiffany Crosson-Smith set out to showcase the benefits of going bespoke and sourcing local suppliers to create a cohesive overall look. The dresses were directly inspired by the flowers and perfectly complemented each other and the soft peach, pink and white colour scheme added to the fresh spring vibe. Tiffany explains, “Using detailed images, sketches were made in different styles to see how best to translate the beautiful blooms into embroidery to create a unique fabric design for a oneoff gown.” By including the bespoke elements of the shoot they were able to create a magical match between the dresses, background and even the accessories. Every element of the shoot was designed and handcrafted by the team of creatives, including the shoes!

Let me eat cake!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
A
s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.
JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier
design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
52
Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are
entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.
To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!
Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.
I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.
Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.
I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.
My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.
Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.
The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 53

hen it comes to the big day it’s often the little things that make all the difference. Whether you’re planning a cosy intimate wedding or a grand, lavish affair the personal touches and decorative details can really make the day your own. Whatever the theme, colour scheme, or budget, putting your own stamp on the celebration can set it apart from the crowd, and you don’t need to be the creative type or a do-it-yourself wizard either! There’s a wealth of inspiration at your fingertips and an army of amazing suppliers on the doorstep to help. Here’s a few handy hints to get you started: ❤ Tempting as it may be to start the wed-shop as soon as the ring’s on your finger, do your homework first to avoid impulse buys and costly mistakes. ❤ One of the first thing on the to-do list is to find your dream venue. Then, once the date is booked, everything else can flow from
there. Draw inspiration from the season for the colours you choose, the type of flowers and decorations. The style of your venue is an important factor too. A grand stately home with majestic rooms may need liitle or no extra decoration, whereas with a blankcanvas venue you can really go to town. Be led by what’s already there and aim to enhance it with complementary colours, materials, props and lighting. ❤ For a coordinated look, choose your colour palette and stick to it!
❤ Create an inspiration moodboard, your suppliers will love you for it as it provides an insight into your big-day vision. ❤ The old days of the cookie-cutter wedding are over. Couples want to reflect their personality and venue styling provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate your lives and loves. Whether it’s a Harry Potter theme or boho chic style, a nod to your travels or hobbies – if it’s meaningful to you, it’s sure to make your big day stand out. ❤ For an on-trend look the Bridgerton effect is all the rage, so expect to see a sprinkling of Regency vibes this year, inspired by the popular Netflix series. ❤ Trends come and go, but environmental issues are a continuing consideration reflected in the rise in demand for sustainable, eco-friendly products and services for weddings. There’s a wide choice of green alternatives available now, including easy swaps for single-use items and non-recyclable materials that look great, so you don’t have to compromise on style. Sourcing locally and in season are great ways to make sure your big day doesn’t cost the earth too. ❤ Don’t forget, there is such a thing as a notheme theme! If you want an eclectic mix of all your favourite things and a riot of colours – that’s fine; it’s your day after all! 55

❤ Sage green was popular last year and is still a firm favourite to look out for in 2022. It looks great with ivory but also works beautifully with soft pink too. Incorporate it into your stationery and it’s great for a fresh, natural look to blend beautifully with an outdoor ceremony space.
❤ Make your cake table a real focal point and www.georgiarachael.co.uk dress to impress your guests! ❤ Blush pink is still very popular. Try adding a layered look to your tablescape by dressing charger plates with napkins, stationery, favours and maybe a little pop of foliage to give a lovely opulent look. ❤ If you’re looking to tap into the Bridgerton/Regency look, a soft dusty blue teamed with ivory and silver accents is perfect and works with so many floral combinations. If you’re planning long banqueting tables take the eye through the whole length, by dressing through the centre with a mix of heights and textures. Keep it crisp with ivory/white blooms or bring in pops of colour with simple bud vases of flowers and if your venue allows real candles, there is an array of beautiful colours to choose from. ❤ For a warm, luxurious touch, add gold accents with charger plates, cutlery and maybe an elegant tall glass goblet with gold floating candles. www.emilyfayephotography.com

Props and lighting make a huge difference when it comes to creating ambience and are great for the wedding photos too. Think strings of twinkling fairylights to transform an outdoor space and flickering lanterns to line the aisle. Suffolk-based Giant Gestures offers everything from blossom trees and floral arches, to giant light-up letters, welcome signs, backdrops and bespoke décor too. Owner Rebecca Oliver says, “It’s easy to sometimes get carried away styling your wedding when venue stylists and prop hire companies can make it not only stress-free, but eco-friendly too. Signage such as mirrored seating plans and giant letters can add an elegant, sophisticated look to your day and are all are reusable. Even bespoke decor can be dismantled and reused and we often repurpose things so there’s little waste.” These LOVE letters in the courtyard of Suffolk’s Hengrave Hall give the outside space an extra Visit www.giantgestures.com romantic feel.
GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK Love for greenery just keeps on growing. Lashings of foliage and living trees help bring the outside in; perfect for a natural, country-themed wedding. BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

Beauty Q&A
NATURAL BEAUTY
I’m a typical redhead with pale skin, freckles and green eyes. I have no idea what to do for my bridal make-up as I hardly ever wear any - can you help? Kate says: Firstly, count yourself lucky, red hair, freckles and green eyes is an extremely beautiful combination. You don’t need to wear loads of make-up on your wedding day, but there are some areas you should concentrate on to look good in the photos. If you’re not used to wearing foundation, leave it out. Opt for a good moisturiser and a concealer for any problem areas, such as redness around the nose and chin, and use a slightly peach tone under the eyes to combat any bluish tint, often found on paler skin, from grinning through. To add warmth, use a light, matte bronzer, which won’t fight with your freckles or make you look too orange, and apply a cream blush high up on your cheekbones. Green eyes can take most colours but try to stick to warmer brown shades to really make them pop. Brown vinyl eyeliner and mascara will help prevent you from feeling too made up, as it looks less harsh then black. You will need to add a little colour to your lips so they show up in the photos, but it doesn’t have to be bright. I like to add a lip stain in the centre and tap the edges with my fingers for a more lived-in look. Use a lip balm throughout the day for comfort and sheen. Make sure to powder any areas where you’ve used concealer and finish with a good setting spray.
WHAT’S HOT
I’m getting married in the summer and don’t have a clue about the latest hair and make-up trends for brides. What do you predict? Sharron says: Wedding hair and make-up trends can change like wedding dress designs. What’s most important is to find something that you feel comfortable with and that complements you. Last year couples were just so grateful to have their wedding day that bridal hair and make-up tended to be more natural and relaxed. This year could be all about the dress, so a simple hairstyle with texture and a loose, airy look would work well. Think hair up or down with softness around the face, beach waves and twists instead of uniform curls, again with texture. Hollywood waves are likely to remain popular too. PRE-WEDDING PICK-ME-UP I’ve been suffering from a touch of the January blues and want to give myself a boost before my wedding in March. What do you suggest? Jo says: Firstly overhaul what you’ve been doing over the winter months and focus on spring 2022. Refresh your wardrobe, think new spring shades and try combining them with winter hues, like berry with teal or navy with pink. ❤ Skincare Give your complexion a boost. Temple Spa’s Truffle Collection of brightening and radiance products is packed with goodies to help plump and rejuvenate tired skin. You could treat yourself to a signature facial with massage therapy in our VIP private salon too, perfect for pre-wedding R&R. ❤ Diet Cut back on caffeine and lower the amount of alcohol you consume. Avoid processed sugars which can make your body feel bloated and your skin tired and uneven. Try incorporating avocados into your diet and plenty of water – around two litres 76

reboot your sleep
Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep – it’s vital for fighting off tiredness, stress and winter bugs. But beware hibernation mode. It’s tempting to oversleep during dark winter months, but this can make you feel sluggish. Aim for around eight hours a night and try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day to encourage a healthy bedtime routine. Natural remedies such as Together Health’s Night Time Marine Magnesium Complex (£12.99, www.togetherhealth.co.uk) can also be hugely beneficial. A comforting calming blend of five natural forms of magnesium, it helps you feel rested and restored.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Local experts on what’s hot for weddings in 2022
BEHIND THE LENS Suffolk-based photographer Allen Blasdell has shot hundreds of weddings during his career and after the restrictions of the last couple of years, he is looking forward to capturing many more magical moments in 2022. Here he shares his industry insight into emerging trends in the world of wedding photography. ❤ In the moment In the past we’ve seen photos involving the use of flashlights, assistants holding reflectors, shots where the couple have had to travel to a special location, and so on. The trend for weddings now though is for more authenticity. Often the couple will have no idea a shot is even being taken or, at most, a few minutes may be spent at the venue to get some ‘created’ but not posed photos. Even these will be simple using maybe just a single flash or reflector. This puts the photographer to the test as it requires efficiency and speed, combined with creativity and artistry, to be able to get these kind of shots. ❤ Monochrome revival Of all the couples I’ve met for this year’s upcoming weddings almost all have expressed a wish for black and white photos – not the whole gallery but a decent proportion, which is great. There are often images that simply shout out for it – they have a particular emotion and character that simply doesn’t need colour, which can be a distraction from the essence of the shot.
❤ Engagement shoots Personally, I’ve done way more engagement shoots than ever in recent months for couples getting married in 2022. It’s a good way to become familiar with being in front of the camera and to feel relaxed. It also marks the beginning of their wedding story. ❤ Bridal boudoir During the getting-ready shots on the wedding day, time is almost always tight and things are simply too pressured for anything approaching the personal and intimate boudoir photos possible at a dedicated shoot. Many brides want to give these photos as a surprise gift to their other half and for some it’s more to boost their confidence in front of the camera. ❤ Old-school film Many brides are loving the vintage look of photos from the ’50s and ’60s. Not the old stiff, posed shots but the soft and gentle effect that film photographs have compared to today’s modern digital camera shots which are often too sharp, contrasty and can lack character. Although I won’t be digging out my film camera any day soon, it is possible to use lenses and process images to get an effect that harks back to those days. GET THE LOOK Leading Suffolk make-up artist Victoria Bradfield reveals some of the latest looks and products for brides-to-be.
www.cherylannephotography.co.uk
❤I feel there’s been a big shift away from the Insta influencers, as more people are getting fed up with staged content and want real, authentic, individual beauty. Instead of the highly contoured look that we’ve seen for a while, a soft sculpting, more natural, less defined effect is proving popular, using cream products which blend beautifully. ❤ Brows will still be big business but not the heavily drawn in ones. Lamination will continue to dominate to help lift brows and open up your eyes, great for correction techniques and fuller, fluffier brows. ❤ Renown make-up artist Lisa Eldridge predicts soft kitten eyeliner instead of heavy cat’s eyes for a youthful, less heavy effect and I agree. Drawn from the middle of the eye outwards with a slight kick to create a natural lift, it’s again a nod to more authentic make-up. ❤ There’s a glossy lip trend emerging but for brides it’s best avoided as loose strands of hair can get stuck to it if there’s a breeze. Go for a touch of pigmented gloss in the middle over your chosen lip colour instead. ❤ There’s growing demand for sustainable products and packaging. Charlotte Tilbury has made great strides toward this with refillable lipsticks and brow pencils, and glass bottles instead of plastic. Also there are some amazing companies offering vegan make-up and brushes like KVD, Hourglass, Cover FX and e.l.f. Some of my personal favourite products include Tarte Shape Tape Concealer and I wouldn’t be without my Urban Decay Setting Spray. The Illamasqua brand also provides high-performance, colour-intense make-up that’s ethically conscious and 100 per cent vegan-friendly. THE ‘I DOS’ Rob Head of Oaktree Ceremonies celebrated his first year as a celebrant at the end of October 2021. He has helped many couples create their own personal and bespoke wedding ceremony and is looking forward to the 2022 season and what lies ahead. He says: With Covid making a lasting impression on 2020/2021 and impacting on so many couples wanting to celebrate their nuptials, this year will see increased demand for a more personal service. Intimate weddings became popular last year, with many newlyweds-to-be opting for a 82
celebrant-led service, allowing them to be more creative and involved with the planning, which looks set to continue. We’re likely to see more sequel weddings too as, rather than cancel their big day altogether, many couples chose to scale it down and host a big party or reception this year on their first anniversary. Ultimately, the wedding day itself will always come down to the couple’s preferences and budget but I think the ethos of couples wanting to support small, independent businesses will carry on. WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR ❤ If you’re struggling to find your dream wedding dress, having one made could be the perfect solution. If you love the sleeves from one style, the skirt from another and the neckline from a hot-off-the-catwalk creation, why not combine the lot in a design created just for you? You can be sure of the perfect fit too!
❤ Set the tone with bespoke jewellery. Say ‘yes’ with an engagement ring like no other, include your birthstone or have a sentimental family piece reinvented for your something old and something new. ❤ With sustainability high on the big-day agenda, upcycled, reinvented and eco-friendly, green products will continue to be in demand, covering everything from the stationery to recycled props to suit your wedding theme. ❤ Hand-painted details add that extra special touch and can be included, not just in the stationery, but a variety of different ways, think rock-chick leather bridal jacket or even the shoes! ❤ Macramé has been all over weddings for the last year or more and looks set to be sticking around in 2022, great for wall hangings, beautiful backdrops, pew ends, table plans and a whole host of imaginative décor. 85

Creator of beautiful bridalwear Tiffany Crosson-Smith of Norfolk-based Tatty’s Original says, “Having a bespoke wedding dress allows you to create exactly what you want.” A handmade dress can take anywhere from three to 12 months to create depending on your design. Although going bespoke requires extra commitment with multiple fittings to attend, it allows you to see your dress taking shape and make any changes during the design process. It also gives you the opportunity to get to know your dressmaker and ask their professional opinions. By working closely together you’ll be able to realise your vision and have a one-ofa-kind gown made to fit you perfectly. www.tattysoriginal.co.uk
HANDMADE THE WRITE STUFF The stationery gives your guests their first glimpse of the wedding theme or colour scheme, so it pays to get it right. Norfolk-based Tops Designs specialises in the design and printing of wedding invitations and table stationery. As well as bespoke lines tailored to your requirements, pre-designed options are also available so all you have to do is choose which one, the colours and wording. www.topsdesigns.co.uk

Ruby Mimi in Zurich opened in October 2021, and is the first hotel of the Munich-based Ruby Group, to open in Switzerland. Situated where one of the first cinemas in Zurich used to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago, the Art Deco-listed hotel’s 208 rooms are spread over its seven floors. The new hotel takes guests on a journey back to the exciting golden era of Hollywood of the 1910s and 1920s with its charming cinema hall. A reminder of the building’s history, its cosy armchairs, red velvet curtains and popcorn machine create a retro cinema feeling. Ruby Hotels follow a clear structure: a location in the heart of the city, top design and high-quality furnishings, focusing on the essentials in order to remain affordable. There are six different room categories available at Ruby Mimi in Zurich, ranging from the NEST Rooms and COSY Rooms to the spacious LOFT Rooms and STAR Rooms which are particularly striking. They are inspired by five starlets of the 1910s who all bore the name Mimi, and each of the rooms feature historical dressing tables and a chaise longue. Average room rates range from CHF 210-230 per night. For more information, visit www.ruby-hotels.com/mimi

It has stunning views towards Helm Crag and Steel Fell and offers an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with a log burning stove to stay toasty, a plush bedroom for two, a sparkling bathroom and an enclosed, private, outdoor seating and barbecue area which makes the most of the surrounding scenery. Guests staying at The Byre can order indulgent breakfasts and dinners from The Yan to be delivered right to their door – perfect after days out exploring the nearby fells and lakes. The Yan is renowned for its beautiful comfort food with everything pickled, smoked, baked and cooked from scratch right down to the ketchup; all of which can be brought to guests at The Byre, along with local ales, good wines and even cocktails! Breakfast delivery options include homemade muesli with fresh fruit and yoghurt, house-smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on thick-cut sourdough toast, and roasted flat field mushrooms on a ciabatta sourdough – setting you up for the day ahead! A stay at The Byre for two people costs from £370 for four nights on a self-catering basis. Breakfasts at The Yan cost from £3.75, while a main dinner course costs from £14.95. There’s no charge for room service delivery to The Byre. To find out more, visit www.broadraynefarm.co.uk 95

DO NOT DISTURB
OASIS OF CALM
A careful renovation has preserved features while adding in contemporary comforts in both the white-bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings that make up this Berkshire-based YTL Hotels property. It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Barn Rooms, located off the island adjacent to the private residences, offer a great option for wedding guests equipped with marble en suite bathrooms and walk-in showers.
The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. A must-try is The Floating Massage by Moss of the Isles performed while lying on an aqua cushion, giving the illusion you’re floating on a cloud of warm water.
MADE FOR ROMANCE Weddings take place in a choice of elegant function suites located in the Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. There’s direct access to a private patio area with a firepit and couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can enjoy the foliage-clad gazebo with guests seated outside on the lawn. The Art Deco-inspired Marlborough Ballroom
THEMED VENUES
with a statement botanical chandelier, mirrored panelling and doors leading to the manicured grounds hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, and both this and the River Room can be hired exclusively. There’s also the option of securing a marquee for up to 300 guests from the hotel’s list of preferred suppliers, and exclusive use of the entire estate can be booked. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.
A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.
Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.
WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
