Here comes the sun

ello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding. As the weather warms up and the daffodils start peeping through, it’s time to welcome spring with open arms. We’re one step closer to summer, and although I’m dreaming of those beach days soaking up the sun, spring is such a special time of year. I love being in nature surrounded by blooming flowers and as a huge animal lover, I’m so excited for adorable animals to be born! The time of year is perfect for exchanging vows, and we can begin utilizing outdoor spaces for the “I dos”, drinks receptions, garden games, chill out areas and more. As we get closer to July, I can’t help but get even more excited for my colleague Melissa to tie the knot to the lovely Dave. As a bridesmaid, I’ve loved supporting my close friend and helping her prepare for such an important day – I can’t wait to see her walk down the aisle! I’ve found my perfect attire, a sage green cold-shoulder dress, and all I need now is to find those perfect finishing touches. We’ve worked hard this issue to provide you with plenty of inspiration, top tips, dreamworthy gowns, picture-perfect venues and more. It doesn’t matter if you’re at the start of your wedding journey or looking for those last-minute touches – we’ve got you covered.

SHERWOOD GLADE 07929 209 358 | www.sherwoodglade.co.uk Situated on 25 acres of private woodland, Sherwood Glade creates the ideal location for weddings. Located in Sherwood Forest, famously associated with the legend of Robin Hood, the woods are home to incredible wildlife and ancient oak trees. There are many trails for romantic strolls under the tree canopies and picture-perfect spaces to capture showstopping images. Whether couples are looking for relaxed or informal weddings with barbecues, glamorous events or something a bit different – the venue is

the perfect option. The property doesn’t have a ceremony licence, but couples can have celebrant-led weddings or blessings in the stunning woodlands surrounded by nature and 120 people. Continue the celebrations under two giant hat tipis with fairylights illuminating the space.

RENAISSANCE AT KELHAM HALL 01636 390 500 | www.renaissance-kelham.com Set in 42 acres of picturesque gardens and manicured lawns, The Renaissance at Kelham Hall offers an elegant backdrop to weddings. The grade I listed building has just relaunched with new owners and a management team who has restored the building to its former glory. The highly skilled staff have decades of experience in launching brands and opening high value, established venues. From the most lavish of celebrations to more intimate events, the 19th-century mansion offers endless opportunities for all types of events. Say “I do” in The Lady Chapel with 70 loved ones. The space is simply stunning, with stained-glass windows and arched ceilings that provide fantastic acoustics. The location is where the Manners-Sutton family used to worship, and it offers a church-like setting for non-religious ceremonies. Or why not opt for the Music Hall with 100 nearest and dearest? Beautiful high ceilings with a central fireplace will create the perfect backdrop for the vows, and the hand-painted ceiling artwork is sure to wow guests. Alternatively, the Carriage Court can host 200 guests for whimsically services and features stunning high ceilings plus original archways. The Great Hall is perfect for larger weddings and can accommodate 650 people. The hall is the second largest dome in England, built by Anglican monks and provides a real wow factor.

Continue the celebrations in the Dinning room with 70 people or The Great Hall with 500 for receptions. Another option is the Carriage Court for 150 guests who will love the high-vaulted ceilings, original windows and stone archways. Lastly, the newly-renovated courtyard marquee can accommodate 450 loved ones and provides a stunning neutral backdrop to receptions. Guests can book the private lodge on-site to stay the night after the celebrations. A knowledgeable and dedicated team of event professionals will leave nothing to chance and guide couples through every planning milestone to provide guests with an unforgettable experience. Couples will be sure to have memorable weddings with help from the professional wedding planner and catering team, who offer delicious meals crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The team can accommodate various tastes, from canapés and wedding breakfasts to casual buffets and hog roasts. If lovebirds have a preferred caterer in mind, the staff can provide private event hire with access for the catering team to use the kitchens.

REAL WEDDINGS

L

auren and Darren’s adventure started thousands of feet in the air on a flight to Reykjavík. The pair were both cabin crew at the time and started chatting before Lauren suggested heading for coffee when they landed. She says, “We still laugh about that moment as it’s something I’ve never normally been brave enough to do before – I must have known we were destined to be together.” While on a stroll in The Bahamas back in 2020, Darren proposed on a beautiful beach. Lauren comments, “We’ve always talked about getting married, but it was a complete surprise on the day. My maid of honour, Keli-Ann, was with us at the time and acted fast to capture the whole thing on camera.”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple was excited to bring their friends and family together to celebrate such an important day. The bride says, “We had a few hurdles during the run up to the wedding with Covid-19 regulations. We were torn whether to postpone the day or not in such uncertain times. We decided to stick to our original date, which became an intimate affair with 28 guests.” She adds, “The day exceeded all our expectations! We’re believers that everything happens for a reason, so maybe our wedding was destined to be this way.” Nestled in Nottinghamshire, Hazel Gap Barn is a familyrun business with picture-perfect spaces. Lauren says, “We fell in love with the spectacular venue on our first visit and could envision our guests enjoying the courtyard space during our summer wedding.” The bride loved the idea of arriving at the property in a vintage car, and it was the perfect way to travel after staying in beautiful cottages the night before. The couple sat at the top table with their parents for the wedding breakfast and had four additional round tables where loved ones sat. The pair opted for seeded paper with an aeroplane on for favours to represent their first moments together. Each one said, ‘Plant this plane and watch it bloom, just like the love of the bride and groom’, which was a lovely touch. Vases of flowers on top of wooden logs made up the centrepieces and matched the colour scheme perfectly. Hazel Gap Barn created some delicious dishes on the day. The bride says. “We had the most tasty food, which everyone still talks about. We had canapés in the courtyard followed by the main meal served on large sharing plates.” She adds, “We liked the idea of the more relaxed family-style dining, which worked so well. We sat around the firepits in the early evening enjoying music, cheese and biscuits.” The two-tired Victoria sponge cake was a big hit with guests, and featured a rose gold world map and beautiful blooms.

23

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding the perfect dress, Lauren fell in love with an ivory Art Couture gown. She says, “I loved the strapless design and the back featured buttons that went all the way down the train. I paired the gown with a cathedral-length veil with lace motifs to complement the simplicity of the dress, and I added a fitted lace bolero in the evening.” She continues, “A real highlight in the morning was getting ready with my bridal party and having our hair and make-up done. When I put my dress on, I was completely overwhelmed with happiness.” Darren wore a checked three-piece suit with an ivory tie and handkerchief, while the groomsmen and page boys wore two-piece suits but with pale lilac ties. The bridesmaids wore beautiful multiway-bandeau dresses in pale lilac, while the flowergirls wore ivory dresses.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple had unforgettable music throughout the day, from the fantastic CoCo and the Butterfields. The bride says, “As lifelong friends, having them perform at our wedding made it extra special.” She adds, “My dear and oldest friends Tom and Dulcima sang as my dad walked me down the aisle. I wanted the song to be a surprise and was taken aback when they sang an acoustic version of Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship – my mum and dad’s wedding song.” The whole band then played in the courtyard after the ceremony before playing again later in the evening. A surprise rendition of Air Hostess by Busted dedicated to the pair was a real crowd-pleaser.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Lauren and Darren both felt a little nervous in the morning but excited for the day ahead. The bride comments, “Everyone who couldn’t come were so supportive and understanding. Knowing they were there with us in spirit and raising a glass from one end of the country to the other was really special.” The lovebirds brilliant photographer Martin and videographer Daiga captured the day perfectly. Their amazing work allows the pair to relive the wedding over again. Lauren says, “All our suppliers went above and beyond; I’d recommend every single one.” The couple had a sparkler train in the evening, which created a magical moment and amazing photographic opportunity for the pair.

HONEYMOON After the perfect wedding, the couple explored the beautiful island of Santorini for five days. The bride says, “It’s somewhere we’ve always wanted to go together and planned it long before the wedding. We enjoyed all the local food and drink; a real highlight was watching the famous sunset over the caldera.”

enjamin and Ruby’s adventure started after meeting through a mutual friend. A few dates later, the pair started to form a strong bond and discovered they had a lot in common – the rest is history. After becoming engaged, the couple wanted to create a fun day for all their loved ones to enjoy. They set the date for September 4th 2021, and worked hard to plan their dream wedding. Here Ruby shares details about their special day...

34

REAL WEDDINGS

The gardens at West Bridgford Registration Office created the perfect backdrop to our photographs.

Our reception took place in a pub called The Embankment, and we hired a London bus to transport guests from one venue to another. The wedding party travelled in a Volkswagen Campervan.

For favours, each guest was given a candle holder to remind them of the day.

Ben wore a navy three-piece suit with a tie and tan brogue shoes.

35

I wore a comfortable lace jumpsuit with matching white heels, and was so excited when I first saw my finished look. The bridesmaids wore navy dresses and carried white gypsophila and purple heather bouquets.

The groomsmen wore the same attire as Ben. We had a piper at our day, which is quite unusual for an English wedding.

Walking down the aisle and the speeches really stood out to us.

PLANNING SOS

PERFECT WEDDING www.pmphotography.uk

Local suppliers share tips and tricks to help couples create their dream day

P

lanning a wedding might seem like a daunting experience at first with so many different aspects to consider – it’s hard knowing where to start. That’s why we’ve gathered top suppliers from around the region to share their wedding planning advice.

SETTING THE SCENE When the wedding planning begins, decide if you’d like a religious or civil ceremony. For those opting for civil service, start to think about what type of venue you’re looking for; this could be a barn, a hotel or a stately home to name a few. After finding a few local properties, book some appointments to see them in person. You might fall in love with one, or it could narrow down your search. You might like a certain barn venue, but realise you’d need to book the caterers, entertainment and a wedding planner to keep everything organised – this might be difficult if you have limited time to plan everything.

THROUGH THE LENS Months of preparation go into weddings, and every moment is precious and fleeting. After the flowers have faded and the champagne has been drunk, your photographs are a permanent link to the magical day and are an investment – not a cost. Booking a company that’s a member of professional organisations such as the British Institute of Professional Photography, The Guild of Photographers, or the Master Photographers Association is a great idea. Businesses can offer different photography styles, and try to pick a team who can mix styles to capture various shots. You might not want formal photos, but they’ll look amazing around your home. You’ll want to find someone who can capture these images as well as the fun and

Or you might find a property that has bedrooms on-site, a wedding planner as part of the venue’s team, a resident DJ and menus all prepared, which would be a less stressful option. Think about what’s important to you both. A venue with character and charm might top something more modern and lends itself better to those all-important photographic moments. The Dower House Hotel is a Edwardian hotel full of period features with an in-house culinary team, a dedicated wedding planner, 21 spacious bedrooms and a beautiful new dressing room for weddings. Carolyn Hutchison | The Dower House Hotel www.dowerhousehotel.co.uk

emotional parts of the day. Check if your photographer can control a large group, as dealing with more than 100 people is a real skill. The company should cope with different lighting situations, from dark churches to bright sunny days and manage all types of weather conditions. Look at the team’s past work to view examples of this. Photographs should be displayed and not just stored on phones, so ask the team to see some prints and albums. Check if they’re included in the overall price, and ask how long until you can see the images – I aim for a week to get them back to clients or a month at peak times. Russell Croucher | RFC Photography www.facebook.com/rfcroucherphotography 45

MANE EVENT When searching for hairstyles for your big day, remember a few things when looking for inspiration. Firstly, think about the neckline of your dress or outfit. If you’re opting for a high neckline, you’ll want to wear your hair up to show off the gown. Think about what styles you'd usually pick. Do you feel more comfortable with your hair down or more special with it up? Your wedding isn’t the day to be trying anything new because you might not feel comfortable. You'll want to feel confident as you’ll look back on the pictures for years to come. If you’re planning to have your hair down or half-up, consider if your hair holds a curl well – this may not be the best option if it doesn’t. When viewing an image, consider the colour of the person’s hair in the picture as styles can show up differently. Look at how long the model's hair is in the photos and their hair type. You won’t be able to achieve the same look if you have fine-medium hair and they have thick-long hair without adding extensions for thickness or volume. Make sure you save lots of inspirational pictures along the way, and then you can narrow down looks or chat through ideas with your stylist to find what will work best for you. Robyn Wood Perfect Silhouette Hairdressing www.perfectsilhouettehairdressing.com

IT’S PARTY TIME Most brides want to invite lots of different people to their hen party, which often means that finding a venue to suit everyone can be challenging. Taking into account how you want to celebrate while keeping in mind what loved ones want to do is a bit of a nightmare. Bistro Live has you covered with a freshly prepared three-course meal ordered on the night and excellent entertainment until 1am. Boogie the night away and even dance on our tables. Once you’ve got a venue, it’s time to get organised. Collecting money from loved ones can be difficult, especially if you’re managing the party yourself. Before the event, look into different payment options and discuss these with loved ones. Hen parties can be pricey, so it’s good to keep everything under one roof. When organising the event, you don’t want to worry about sorting all those little extras like sashes, balloons, and games. Many companies like ourselves have different packages to suit each group’s needs to save any hassle. Kelly Eggleton | Bistro Live www.bistrolive.com 46

Using a professional make-up artist on your special day will ensure your look photographs beautifully while making you feel confident. The expert will know how to enhance your features, use products that lasts well into the evening and cover up a pesky pimple or fix you up in case emotions run high – happy tears only of course! Before booking a company, look at their website and social media accounts to see if their style suits what you’re after. Read reviews from clients, which will give you an accurate idea of how reliable a person is and how they'll perform on the special day. I have a contract in place like most businesses, which shows professionalism and states everything you should expect to receive from my service – then there are no hidden surprises. Meet your chosen supplier to ensure you get on and have the same approach to the day. A make-up trial is a great way to get together to discuss your theme and what look you’re after. FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD When planning a wedding, think about the basics and what personifies you as a couple, including music you both enjoy, favourite colours and food you love. Create a base theme around these factors to create a personal day. Don’t worry about whether someone may or may not like your choices; all that matters is that you're both happy. Find bands or DJs who will play the music you like, a venue that matches your vibe and find caterers that

satisfy your appetite. Here at Doughnotts, we recognise that your wedding is one of your biggest days, and making the event extra special is our main priority. Whether there’s a specific colour, flavour, design or theme you like, we’ll work alongside you. With various packages to choose from, there’s no wedding too big or too small. SWEET ESCAPE

Tom Ford’s latest perfume launch lets you escape to the luxurious Mediterranean. Costa Azzurra Parfum (£108 50ml, £150 100ml) offers an air of freshness through crisp Italian lemon and evokes a dense coastal forest with magnified oakwood extract and cypress. Plus, cistus absolute and a harmony of ambers capture the spirit of luxury. Check out www.tomford.co.uk

Beauty

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews reveals all the latest must-haves for the bride-to-be

ESPA’s new Tri-Active Regenerating Define and Tighten Body Serum (£60) aids in tightening and toning for naturally plumper skin. Harnessing the natural power of regenerating sea moss, mushroom, mandarin, plant stem cells and more for a symphony of super-nutrients, it helps to define skin and banish imperfections, restoring the body’s skin texture with luxurious hydration. Naturally enriched with aromatherapy, this body serum features essential oils from rose and geraniums for holistic, seasonal wellbeing. Check out www.espaskincare.com

BUZZ

SMOOTH OPERATOR

Award-winning haircare brand, Innersense Organic Beauty, has launched Serenity Smoothing Cream (£24), a nutrient-rich formula suitable for all hair types delivering a flawless and bouncy blow dry with a sleek look. Baobab and frangipani help to lock in moisture, as well as providing care for hair exposed to heated styling tools and strengthening strands without weighing them down. Meanwhile, vitamin-rich mango seed butter, avocado and coconut oils nourish and boost hydration while smoothing the cuticle to reduce frizz. Find it at www.naturisimo.com 60

A GROWER, NOT A THROWER

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! Just use as normal and instead of throwing them away when they become too small to use, flip them around, stick the end into a pot of damp soil and ta-da – beautiful, bee-friendly wildflowers will start to sprout within 1-2 weeks. Check out www.sproutworld.com

CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Find it at www.cultbeauty.co.uk

BYE, BYE DRY

Have the ravages of winter left your skin dry, dull, sensitive, flaky and tight? As we embrace the spring, get your glow back with Q+A Snow Algae Intensive Face Cream (£12). If, like me, you’re reaching for Google, allow me to explain. Snow algae, also known as watermelon snow, is a species of green algae containing astaxanthin, a potent antioxidant great at improving dryness, sun damage and protecting against free radicals. I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and my dry skin is already showing signs of improvement. Find it at www.qandaskin.com

YOU CAN IMPROVE ON PERFECTION!

Now reformulated to be vegan-friendly and even more comfortable with an extended shade range suitable for all skin tones, Huda Beauty proves that the perfect liquid matte lipstick does exist. The non-drying formula delivers a oneswipe application of vibrant colour coverage with up to eight hours of staying power that every bride needs and is flake-, streak-, smudge-, and transferproof. It also now boasts the thinnest possible texture thanks to the brand’s unique L.O.V.E complex (lycopene, olive oil, vitamin A and E, essential fatty acids) helping to keep lips supple all day long. EYE LOVE THIS!

FREEZE FRAME

Having seen Skin Proud Frozen Over (£16.95) go viral on TikTok I was keen to know more about this cryotherapy gel moisturiser. Designed to combat tired and puffy skin in desperate need of a pick me up, the gel-to-ice moisturiser hydrates and cools. Infused with anti-inflammatory aloe vera extract and hyaluronic acid it also works to lock in moisture and calm the skin. It can be used as is or popped in the freezer for a slush-like texture and extra-cooling relief. Find it at www.boots.com

Hot on FeelUnique at the moment is Vichy Mineral 89 Eye Brightening Serum with hyaluronic acid and caffeine (£20). This multi-tasker is designed to lighten the appearance of dark circles, make eye bags less visible, hydrate and plump the sensitive eye area for 24 hours and protect the skin’s barrier function. It can even make eyelashes appear stronger and feel silkier. I love the instantly soothing effect it has on the delicate eye area after scrubbing away to remove make-up. It’s an all-round little hero and you can find it at www.feelunique.com 61

NATURA SIBERICA ANTI-OX WILD BLUEBERRY RENEWING FACE SERUM £6.99 (30ml), https://naturasiberica.co.uk “This lightweight product ticks all the boxes; it smooths, hydrates and restores the skin’s natural radiance. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with it and I was surprised by how quickly the formula absorbed leaving behind it a natural glow.” – Olivia Gibson

Q+A VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SERUM £9 (30ml), www.qandaskin.com “This product absorbed quickly and left my skin soft and silky in minutes. In just two days use, morning and night, my blemish-filled complexion had begun to clear and a soft glow had taken hold. Just one pump is enough to cover the entire face, so despite the bottle’s small size, it’s definitely going to last.” – Beth Morton

SKINCARE SUPERHEROES Serums are the skincare essentials of the 20s, especially if you’re on the quest for a radiant big-day complexion WISHFUL THIRST TRAP JUICE SERUM £41 (30ml), www.feelunique.com “The first thing to make me smile about this serum was its fresh scent, I could pick out the rose and aloe vera notes instantly. The second was the ease of application as it glided on smoothly. This mix of hyaluronic acid with firming peptides has benefited my skin, which is glowing and more hydrated.” – Claire Ridley

GLOW RECIPE GUAVA VITAMIN C DARK SPOT SERUM £41 (30ml), www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This super serum had me hooked from the moment I picked up its 100 per cent recyclable packaging and shelfworthy pink bottle. It doesn’t claim to be a miracle worker but my mature skin soaked it up without leaving a trace and although I can’t report that my dark spots have disappeared, it has certainly made a difference. My skin already appears more even with a healthier glow so I’ll definitely be sticking with it!”– Sarah Reeve ROC MULTI CORREXION HYDRATE + PLUMP SERUM CAPSULES £35.99 for 30, www.feelunique.com “Using one serum capsule every night for a week so far has made my skin feel soft and smooth. It’s helped solve my dry-skin problem and given me a glowing complexion. Each capsule provided more than enough product to cover my face and I even had enough excess to use on my hands, which also suffer.” – Melissa Barker 62

OLE HENRIKSEN DEWTOPIA 20% ACID NIGHT TREATMENT £49 (30ml), www.boots.com “I’m thrilled with this night serum. Each morning I wake up and feel a difference to my skin. Containing a powerful 20 per cent acid blend, it’s certainly helped minimise my pores and gives my skin the radiance it had previously been lacking.” – Rachel Westall

INSTITUT ESTHEDERM INTENSIVE HYALURONIC SERUM £52 (30ml), www.feelunique.com “I’ve been suffering from dry skin lately, so I grabbed this little beauty as soon as I saw it. It sinks into the skin at breakneck speed, with no unpleasant residue whatsoever and leaves it feeling nourished, plumped and smooth. I’ve noticed an improvement in my makeup application already.” – Kelly Andrews

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

FASHION-FORWARD

I suffer with acne, but I want a flawless base for our summer wedding. How can I achieve this? Don’t panic because acne is very common, and your make-up artist will still have the right products to create a flawless base. Always discuss your skin concerns with the supplier before your make-up trial. Acne is more prone in ladies due to hormones, and most of us have an outbreak or two at some point. The problem appears when hair follicles become blocked, and the areas often become oily as our skin tries to compensate for the issue by overproducing an oil called sebum. It’s essential to cleanse and moisturise your skin, even if you suffer from spots, to help prevent scarring. Using a moisturiser with a good SPF throughout summer also helps reduce the signs of premature ageing. Rachel Bray | Kiss & Makeup by Rachel Bray www.kissandmakeupbyrachelbray.co.uk

I’m getting married in July, and I’m worried about overheating in my gown. What should I keep in mind when dress shopping? At each appointment we always consider the bride’s venue, the time of year the wedding is taking place and most importantly, how the client wants to feel on her wedding day. For a summer wedding, try on a selection of gowns made from light fabrics with flowing layers. If you’re swaying more towards a ballgown or a fuller dress, wear an underskirt to help support the material so you won’t feel hot and can enjoy the day. Soft boho-style dresses are popular for summer weddings at the minute, and offer a modern twist with just as much wow factor. If you’re looking for something less traditional, a lightweight crepe skirt and crop top from our Ella Kate range would be perfect. EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

CAPTURING MEMORIES How can we capture amazing outdoor pictures at our spring wedding if we experience bad weather? I always come to weddings armed with a boot full of umbrellas, waterproof covers for my gear, and even a poncho. We can go outside and capture some great shots even if it rains by using these items or any tree cover available. For example, this beautiful shot features a couple in the rain.

Hopefully, you’ll be in the mindset to embrace your day no matter the weather and have maximum fun. As well as various umbrella options, I use off-camera flash and coloured gels to capture great shots. I can also add different effects to outside shots to light up trees and venues or liven up inside pictures on a rainy day. Daniel Burton | Daniel Burton Photography www.danielburtonphotography.com

SWEET TOOTH We want to create a sweet table for our guests to enjoy, but we’re not sure where to start. What advice can you share with us? Sweet tables are lovely additions to receptions and doesn’t always have to cost the earth. With such a huge range of sweets available, you can find something your younger guests will love as well as the adults. The treats must be accessible to your guests, but you also don’t want the table to be in the way – the best location is preferably against a wall. Depending on your chosen venue, it could also be a good idea to have it in the entrance way or canopy area. One of the best ways to make the station look gorgeous is using a great colour palette. You can then incorporate sweets and decorations that match to create a clean, fun and put-together look – pink and white shades are popular choices. Try to have a variety of treats for guests to enjoy. Incorporate chocolates and marshmallows as well as confectionery options. To make the display look amazing, you’ll want to cover the table with a cloth that ties in with your colour palette. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy; it just helps tie everything together. Make your sweets table look fun and busy by adding different

dimensions – this is what will make your table look luxurious. You can do this by having different sized mason jars and cake stands. If you want to jazz up the table more, you could add flowers and a fun backdrop. Kathryn Hague | Wholesale Sweets www.wholesalesweets.co.uk 65

PICTURE-PERFECT Lots of photographers offer an engagement shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s for us. What would the benefits be? An engagement shoot is a great way to get to know your photographer before the day and see their style of photography. It also gives the company an idea of how to get you engaged and capture those stunning shots without impeding your day. Building your confidence is another good reason to take the team up on their offer; let them showcase their talent and see how amazing the results will be. It’s also often free and would be a fun experience for you both – you’ll even be able to update social media channels too!

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT We’re thinking of booking our entertainment, but we’re a bit worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. Do you have any suggestions? Here at 2 of Harps, an international award-winning harp and vocal duo, we understand your concern as it’s not always possible to meet our clients face-to-face. Here are our top tips we use ourselves to help. Just because you can’t see your musician live doesn’t mean you can’t schedule a video call. We always book an online video chat with our couples to discuss music choices, timings of performances, themes and more. Plus, we always play our harps and sing different song options so you can imagine what the music will sound like on the day. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions as the more you ask, the more at ease you’re going to feel. Include questions about song choices, setting up times, how much space the musicians need, if you’d like them to perform outside and more. Lastly, check reviews and content online, which are great ways to establish how others rate the company. Adel and Karina Wilson | 2 of Harps | www.2ofharps.com 66

YOUR DAY YOUR WAY We want a customised service to make our day more personal and we’re thinking of booking a celebrant. What would you suggest? The beauty of having a celebrant-led ceremony is that you can choose to incorporate whatever you want into the day; there are no limitations or restrictions. You’ll work with your celebrant to create an exclusive ceremony that’s personal to you both, not a copy of someone else’s day. Here are some ideas to make the day extra special… ❤ Choose your own style and decide if you want a traditional, religious or humorous ceremony. Create your vows and include meaningful words that tell the story of your relationship. ❤ Allow your family and guests to participate in the ceremony, from saying a reading or poem to singing your favourite song. Or why not allow the rings to pass between guests before finally reaching you both? Each person can say a little prayer or wish. ❤ Include memorable moments such as a sand or candle ceremony, which can involve immediate family or friends and gives you a keepsake of the day. ❤ Why not change the seating arrangements? You don’t always need to have a centre aisle; this can be round or heart-shaped – the choice is yours. ❤ Ensure you create the wedding you want, let your emotions show and have the most amazing day. Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Melissa x

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 75
