Ho, ho, ho! I
love this time of year, not only because I’m a magpie who adores anything that sparkles, but because it’s an opportunity for me to create a magazine full of seasonal splendour! This year, I think we’re all looking forward to a special festive period of being reunited with loved ones to eat, drink and be merry now that all restrictions have been lifted. Whether you’re putting the finishing touches to a winter wedding or planning a larger affair for next year, it’s always fun for me to compile our end-of-year issue. I asked some of my favourite wedding photographers in both regions to send me their treasured Christmas wedding images which are revealed on page 51. I have also rounded up a selection of some of the best snow-capped venues in both regions that can be seen on page 15. There’s also bridal jewellery and accessories, dream dresses, big-day beauty and hot honeymoon destinations, along with much more, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did creating it, and I’ll see you next year. Until then...

TOUREASY LAUNCHES FIRST CHRISTMAS TOUR A new Swindon-based sustainable tour operator is offering Christmas trips, perfect for a hen gathering or a pre-wedding break. Toureasy is the UK’s first and only carbon-neutral coach tour operator with 15 pickup points across the region including Chippenham, Gloucester and Cheltenham. Tours start from £70 per person and include a trip to the Christmas markets and a two-day break to Blenheim Palace with its spectacular light display colouring the palace and gardens. The getaways are designed so that customers can do their bit for the planet without paying a premium or needing to sign up for long-term commitments. Holidaymakers will receive a certificate after each trip confirming the carbon offset made on their behalf and reinforcing the positive impact they have made in combatting the global climate crisis. The founder of Toureasy, Sean Taggart tells us, “We realised that far too often sustainable travel options are linked to luxury holidays, with a price tag to match. Our ambition is to offer affordable holidays where everyone that travels with us automatically makes a positive contribution to protecting our planet. Our holidays make that possible and we are proud to be operating some of our first tours from the South West.” To book, visit www.toureasy.co.uk

Rosebud Preserves of Masham and Two Dales Bakery of Reeth have collaborated to create the very best quality festive mince pies hand-crafted at the artisan bakery from a sweet, all-butter shortcrust pastry, using organic flour from Shipton Mill in Gloucestershire and free-range eggs from Wensleydale. They are generously filled with Rosebud Preserves’ delicious Almond & Orange Mincemeat and eight pies are presented in an elegant grey gift box with a clear presentation lid (£9.95 per box/400g). Hannah Parnell, baker and owner of Two Dales Bakery, tells us, “We were thrilled to be approached by the team at Rosebud Preserves to discuss a collaboration to make mince pies for Christmas. It was great fun developing the final pastry recipe to complement the delicious flavours of the mincemeat. We bake the pies fresh for each delivery and once they are out of the oven, sprinkle them with just a little sugar, ready for our customers to enjoy.” To shop, visit www.rosebudpreserves.co.uk

What ’s new
IN THE COTSWOLDS These popular venues in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty all have something new to reveal
THE CASTLE INN, CASTLE COMBE, WILTSHIRE Castle Combe is a quintessentially English village in North West Wiltshire, often referred to as the prettiest village in England. It’s home to The Castle Inn, a 12th-century destination pub complete with 12 en suite rooms and offering local beverages matched with good, honest pub food that has just appointed talented South West-based chef, Jamie Barnett as head chef. Jamie, who has previously held positions at Lucknam Park and Bowood tells us, “I’m thrilled to have joined the team at The Castle Inn and am excited to create and deliver a menu that pays homage to traditional gastro-dining, using quality local produce from trusted suppliers and delivering each dish with warm hospitality. For me, pub fare isn’t about being fancy, it’s about imparting great cookery and letting the produce speak for itself.” Guests can expect traditional gastro dishes on the menu made with high-quality local produce cooked simply with the menu changing often to adapt to the seasons. Current snacks include home-cured bresaola and Padrón peppers and salt beef croquettes and aioli. Starter choices are twice-baked double-barrelled cheese souffle, the Castle Inn scotch egg and beetroot-cured salmon served with fennel and pickled radish and beetroot. Highlights from the main menu are the castle burger topped with cheese, bacon jam, house pickles and burger sauce served with fries, Wiltshire venison steamed pudding accompanied with wild mushrooms, sticky red cabbage and mashed potato and Cotswold battered catch of the day served with hand-cut chips, mushy peas and tartare reign supreme. The dessert offering includes sticky toffee stout pudding served with vanilla ice cream and white chocolate cheesecake with gingerbread puree and cinnamon ice cream. A selection of cheeses with pear chutney and crackers is also available on request alongside a hand-picked offering of Dalva port. In other news at the property, considerate restoration projects have been carried out throughout the pub to preserve yet enhance the charm of this historic building. Diners can relax at a table in the bar, the central dining room or the outdoor terrace. Those looking to host an event, for
example, an intimate wedding dinner, can book one of the inn’s woodenclad private dining spaces, seating between six and 24 guests, with the option to hire the entire property. Upstairs, 12 en suite bedrooms provide a comfortable retreat for guests. Located opposite is its sister property, The Manor House, a luxury hotel and golf club home to the Michelin-starred restaurant, Bybrook, overseen by Rob Potter that’s part of the Exclusive Collection, a family-owned independent collection of hotels and spas, a golf club, cookery school and a pub. TEWKESBURY PARK, GLOUCESTERSHIRE This stylish hotel and wedding venue is set in 165 acres of parkland overlooking the famous site of the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury. In 2019, the hotel completed an extensive four-year renovation costing £10 million that saw the addition of nine luxury historic suites, two new spa rooms, two meeting rooms, an Orangery, a Cocktail Lounge and the Cotswolds Suite - a glass façade events suite showcasing magnificent views that’s fully air-conditioned and equipped with a video wall. Just outside, there’s a wood-fired pizza oven and terrace perfect for summer weddings. Accommodating up to 200 wedding guests, the Cotswolds Suite can be subdivided into three equal sections; The Broadway Suite that’s adjacent to the golf putting green; The Burford Suite which is the middle
room and The Bibury Suite adjoining the exclusive-use Berkeley Lounge, Bar and Terrace. Spring 2021 saw the completion of a room refurbishment with 17 new outdoor garden terraces created, and four ground-floor guest rooms being fully refurbished to create brand-new terrace rooms. Ceremony licence? Yes Contact: 01684 272 300, www.tewkesburypark.co.uk We love... the décor of the new outdoor garden terrace rooms with the bathrooms boasting bold statement fittings and large mirrors and the bedrooms providing a fresh country-style feel with a modern twist.
THE SPEECH HOUSE HOTEL, COLEFORD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE This former 17th-century hunting lodge is set in the heart of the idyllic Royal Forest of Dean combining period charm with modern hotel and purposebuilt wedding venue facilities that are showcased in this new wedding video that the property has released. The manicured garden area provides a much-photographed stag statue for photo opportunities and the hotel borders the 15-acre Speech House field that can be hired for wedding games during the summer months. The Edwin Tauber Suite overlooking the Speech House field and the ancient woodland beyond is a picture-perfect setting for a party. The large bi-fold doors open out on to a covered terrace that leads to the hotel garden and beyond. This spacious and light purpose-built function suite has a bar and reception area offering plenty of space for up to 150 guests seated at dinner and dancing for up to 200 people. The ceremony can take place outdoors under the sheltered terrace with guests looking on while the suite can be laid out traditionally for the wedding breakfast with everyone seated at round tables or, for a more contemporary feel, 12
long rustic banquet tables can be positioned in this flexible space. Alternatively, the historic Verderers’ Court provides a traditional setting for any celebration for between 50 and 70 guests. It’s steeped in history, from the hand-carved chairs to the open fireplace and beamed ceiling. The Carolean Room, named after the era of King Charles II, is ideal for smaller parties of up to 25 guests. This charming room is situated in the main part of the hotel and is decorated in a traditional country house style. The Orangery is a light and airy garden room available to hire exclusively for post-wedding drinks and canapés or as an extra space for the wedding party. It opens out on to a pretty garden and can be hired alongside the Edwin Tauber Suite, Verderers’ Court or The Carolean Room. Ceremony licence? eatrice and Andrew met on the dating app Bumble and enjoyed their first date in Cheltenham. “We instantly got along and felt very comfortable with each other,” Beatrice tells us. “I could tell that he was a cheerful person which attracted me to him and Andrew tells me that he loved my smile and sense of humour.” The couple became engaged on 24th August 2020. “We had been out for dinner at Gallimores Kitchen in Cheltenham and decided to go for a wander around the Imperial Gardens which is where we had enjoyed our second date,” Beatrice tells us. “Andrew got down on one knee and surprised me with a beautiful ring and those four words!”
SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose to have their ceremony at St Peter & St Paul Blockley followed by a reception at Cotswold House Hotel & Spa in Chipping Campden. “I have always wanted to get married in this church because I used to sing in the choir there when I was younger,” Beatrice tells us. Having the choir sing and the organist, Doreen, play at our wedding was like having extended family present. We also knew The Very Reverend Canon Dana Delap well and wanted her to marry us. We giggled throughout the entire ceremony because we were so incredibly happy!” Beatrice arrived at the church, and she and Andrew left as newlyweds, in a 1952 gold and black Bentley Mark VI. “The driver made us a personalised number plate with our wedding date on it which was special,” Beatrice says. For the reception, the couple were only able to invite 15 guests due to the covid restrictions in place at the time. “We needed somewhere that had a small and intimate space,” Beatrice explains. The Fig Room at the hotel was perfect. Beatrice and Andrew styled their winter wedding with a red and dark-blue colour theme with hints of pink and white. “We chose red, white and pink flowers teamed with gypsophila and green eucalyptus for our bouquets and centrepieces,” Beatrice tells us. “We had a multi-picture frame as our table plan that displayed some photos from our engagement shoot (that was also taken by our wedding photographer, Jade) and we named the tables after Australian places with unusual names which proved very entertaining listening to everybody trying to pronounce them correctly! I made white heart-shaped Christmas tree decorations as our place names that featured our new married name and wedding date on the back. Our favours were small boxes filled with Australian sweets, a single red rose and a small bottle of hand sanitiser with a label saying spread love, not germs.” On the menu were a choice of canapés including crayfish tails with caviar Marie rose sauce, peppered duck breast with apple compote and thinly sliced pork fillet with basil pesto. The starter was smoked duck breast, fennel carpaccio and pickled radishes with truffled brioche snippets while the main course was a rib eye of beef served with sweet potato fondant, creamed spinach and celeriac with a burgundy jus. “We enjoyed raspberry mousse, burnt meringue and macaroons for dessert,” Beatrice says. “I made a classic three-tier cake with my mother. I created a gluten-free lemon and orange drizzle cake as the middle tier and she made the fruit cakes for the top and bottom tiers that all tasted delicious.”

LOOKING THE PART Beatrice chose her dress because she felt like a bride when she first tried it on. “I knew that I wanted it to have detailed embroidery on the bodice which cascaded down the skirt,” she tells us. “I loved the design on my dress that looked like eucalyptus leaves - I instantly fell in love with it. Donna, the owner of Posy & Pearl Bridal Boutique where I bought it makes bespoke hair accessories so I was able to design my own piece with her. I decided on a long hair vine with a cluster of pearl flowers and a couple of small pins for each of my bridesmaids which looked so pretty. Donna also gifted me a beautiful blue ribbon garter for my something blue.” Beatrice teamed her dress with a pearl, white gold and diamond drop pendant necklace and earrings. “I also borrowed a silver and moonstone bracelet from my mother and my father put a silver sixpence in my shoe!” Andrew chose a blue herringbone check suit teamed with a tan-coloured check waistcoat featuring a burgundy paisley pattern on the back to match the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses and a pair of chestnut-brown brogues. “His suit was a lighter shade of blue than the best man and my father’s so that he stood out but they all wore matching waistcoats,” Beatrice says. Our bridesmaids looked stunning in their burgundy Bardot-style midi dresses which they teamed with a tan faux-fur bolero shawl to keep warm.”
REAL WEDDINGS
TIME TO ENTERTAIN The couple wanted to hire a band but as they weren’t able to have a large reception, they’re saving that until a reception party in 2022. “We entertained our guests with a game of wedding speech bingo with boxes of chocolates as the prizes!” Beatrice tells us. “Andrew’s parents Megan and Ron, his best friend Danny in Australia (who would’ve been our best man) and my sister Vanessa and her family in Sweden all recorded video speeches which we played during the reception. Although they couldn’t be there in person, it was so special to have them as part of the day. We also enjoyed the first dance to Stand by Me by Ben E. King, a song that we had danced to on our very first date. My friend’s mum is a choreographer who gave us a socially distanced lesson in the garden two days before! Needless to say the lack of space, the size of my dress and Andrew’s lack of coordination did not bode well but it was a beautiful moment for us and we didn’t care!”
21
“Half the village of Blockley and other family friends surprised us by gathering outside the church. They waved and shouted as I arrived (I felt like royalty!) They even stood outside in the rain during the service and cheered us both as we exited the church as husband and wife. We had arranged mulled wine to be served in the churchyard because we knew that a couple of people might turn up but we had no idea there would be so many (all socially distanced). It was incredibly special, we felt so much love and support from them. We know that if this had been a restriction-free wedding, they would’ve all been inside the church with us.” – Beatrice

Debbie Davidson and Rory Clark married on 22nd May 2021 at Bowerchalke Barn in Salisbury followed by dinner and an evening reception at The Chapter House.
ebbie and Rory met when he regularly walked past the hair salon where she worked. “He would glance in and smile at me!” Debbie tells us. “It turned out we had some mutual friends and one of them, Luke, introduced us so it was only right that he was the best man at our wedding! Our first date was to the Bath Christmas Market and the rest is history.” Rory adds, “I was attracted to Debbie’s gorgeous smile, stunning figure and the fact that she was playing hard to get!” Debbie says, “Without sounding too cliché, Rory is tall, dark and handsome with a soft Scottish accent which was hard to resist!” The couple became engaged during a weekend away in Amsterdam. “I had no idea that he was planning on asking me to marry him,” Debbie says. Rory adds, “I was extremely nervous the day before asking her. We explored the city and on our return to the hotel, enjoyed champagne in our room. Debbie is quite a private person so I was aware that asking her to marry me in a restaurant or bar would be quite overwhelming for her so I proposed in the comfort of the room. I was lucky enough to be given my grandmother’s 1920s diamond ring which I knew she wouldn’t be able to resist!” Here, the couple describe their celebration at Bowerchalke Barn decorated with rustic touches and seasonal flowers in vintage pink shades. 25

The music that Debbie had chosen to walk down the aisle to was a song by an artist called Maisie Peters which was beaut iful and on seeing her for the first time, I knew I had made the right decision asking her to marr y me!
Marrying Debbie was the easy bit but knowing that I had to stand up and deliver a speech was always at the back of my mind because I’m not a confident public speaker. Thankfully, one of our guests and Debbie’s maid-of-honour, Michelle is a life coach so just before I gave my speech, she encouraged me to breathe slowly and deeply!

annah and Simon met when they both worked in The Bakers Arms country pub in Cirencester. “Simon was the head chef and I was a waitress,” Hannah tell us. “He was so kind and calm and he tells me now that it was my eyes and smile that he fell for.” The couple became engaged on Christmas Day in 2018. “Simon proposed to me at his mum and dad’s house while the family were exchanging presents,” Hannah says. “Simon’s mum was handing out the gifts and he had asked her to save mine until last. As I opened it, Simon presented me with a card saying ‘Happy Christmas to my Fiancee’ before getting down on one knee with a ring box in his hand and asking me to marry him. I was in shock and disbelief and I started crying happy tears! He explained that he had asked my dad’s permission which was a big deal for me because my dad is fighting cancer so it gave him something to look forward to. We set a date for the wedding hoping that my dad would be well enough to attend and walk me down the aisle, which he did.”
SETTING THE SCENE Hannah and Simon chose the DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham as their venue because it was a hotel that they regularly visited. “The gardens are beautiful and the staff are very friendly,” Hannah tells us. “We had booked a wedding package allowing 80 guests to attend during the day and 100 in the evening but because of the restrictions in place at the time of our wedding, we could only invite 30 guests for the entire day. Everybody needed to wear a face covering apart from myself, Simon and my dad but this didn’t bother us because it was amazing to have my dad and our close family and friends around us.” Hannah stayed at the hotel with her mum, sister and bridesmaid the night before the wedding. “The morning was so busy spent getting ready that the nerves didn’t kick in until I was dressed and about to meet my dad and stepdad,” she tells us. “Our amazing photographer, Aimee, got me to hide in the bathroom and as I came out and they turned to see me for the first time, I just started to cry and the nerves kicked in. Seeing their reactions was an amazing moment that I’ll never forget.” Hannah’s maid-of-honour Kelly, who is also her sister, did a fantastic job and nothing was too much trouble. “If my veil was out of place she was there to fix it, if my make-up needed touching up she did it, she was amazing, Hannah tells us. “She gave a surprise speech that had me in tears and our guests laughing. I really couldn’t have done it without her, she was my rock. I love her to bits and am so proud to be able to call her my sister.” The couple kept their table plan simple with everyone seated at two round tables and a long rectangular top table. “My mum made our centrepieces using Whitley Neil gin bottles that she had been collecting especially. She filled them with fairylights and placed them on mirrored plates. She also got silver and navy balloons to place in the middle of the round tables and at the ends of the top table. It looked simple yet beautiful, I really can’t thank her enough for all the help and support she gave us.”

Hannah and Simon purchased scratch card holders personalised with their married name and wedding date which they gave as favours. “My mum sourced some heart-shaped chocolates with navy and sliver detail to fit in with our colour theme,” Hannah tells us. “My flowers also complemented our theme and our red velvet and carrot cake that was made by my 16-year-old sister, Rose, was decorated with fresh flowers.” The couple’s catering was provided by the talented team at the hotel and included arrival drinks, the wedding breakfast and the evening buffet. The options for dinner were chicken liver pâté, tomato soup or prawn cocktail to start followed by pork belly, sea bass or stuffed chicken as the main course.
LOOKING THE PART Hannah chose a princess-style gown with a sweetheart neckline. “It was so beautiful,” she tells us. “I had visited a couple of wedding dress boutiques but nothing caught my eye as much as this one did from Rosella Wedding Gowns in Cirencester. I knew it was the one because my mum cried when I stepped out of the fitting room wearing it. I teamed it with a full-length veil embellished with crystals and my mum treated me to a headband.” Simon, his best man, father and Hannah’s dad and stepdad all wore navy three-piece tweed suits and Hannah’s maid-of-honour’s dress was also navy with the couple’s two bridesmaids dressed in pink and grey gowns.
TIME TO ENTERTAIN “We were unable to have a DJ and dancing due to the restrictions in place at the time of our wedding but we were able to have a father and daughter dance and a stepdad and daughter dance along with our first dance together which was to Elton John’s Your Song,” Hannah tells us. “We purchased a big speaker with some disco lights and made a couple of playlists, allowing our guests to choose the music they wanted which added a personal touch.” 33
“Our wedding coordinator at the hotel, Martha Bischert, was a star! She made me feel like a princess and nothing was too much trouble. She made our guests feel happy and relaxed - everyone loved her.” – Hannah

essica and James (known as Woody) met while working in the same office. “We worked closely together and enjoyed many thirsty Thursdays at the Golden Lion Pub!” Jessica tells us. “When I left the company, we stayed in touch and our relationship blossomed from there. I was attracted to Woody’s kind nature and confidence - he has the loudest laugh that could always be heard, even from the sound-proofed meeting room! He found me a nuisance to start with but I made him laugh and won him over with my cooking. After one year of dating, we moved in together.” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal in Italy. “Woody had asked for my parent’s blessing beforehand and organised a holiday to Rome for my birthday,” Jessica tells us. “On our last day, he had booked a romantic restaurant for dinner overlooking The Imperial Forums. After the starters, he suggested having a photo taken on the terrace. Before I knew what was happening, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! Naturally, I said yes although it happened so quickly that the restaurant staff insisted we do it again so they could take some photos so we had to reenact the proposal!”
REAL WEDDINGS
SETTING THE SCENE Jessica and Woody wanted to get married in a castle that would accommodate all their loved ones. “Because we live in London, we wanted somewhere different and Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire ticked all the boxes,” Jessica explains. “It’s a beautiful historic castle set in stunning grounds, perfect for our princess theme with pink and white touches.” The couple chose boutique company Ella Bee Designs to create their table plan, place names, welcome board, invitations and thank you cards. “Owner Laura helped us with everything even when we couldn’t decide between the different designs and when our guest numbers were constantly changing due to the restrictions in place at the time,” Jessica says. The couple decided to have a candy stand instead of favours with bagged sweets available for each guest to take home. Their table centrepieces were tall martini-style vases filled with pretty flower arrangements that they spent months researching. “We picked pale pink, cream and white blooms mixed with soft green and silver-sprayed foliage,” Jessica says. Our florist, Louise, did a fantastic job considering that she had to source flowers that were out of season because our wedding date had changed from May to November. She created my stunning bridal bouquet and my bridesmaids’ posies along with the buttonholes and our cheese tower wedding cake was also decorated with the same fresh flower varieties.” 37

REAL WEDDINGS The talented catering team at the venue provided a mouth-watering menu. “They were very accommodating and offered a great selection,” Jessica tells us. “They were also happy for us to choose dishes that weren’t on the menu.” Because lots of our guests were vegetarian, we wanted something special for the main course for them which we achieved.”
LOOKING THE PART Jessica wore the dress called Nicole from the Milano collection at bridal boutique Mirror Mirror London. “It was a pale pink sequinned with lace dress with 10 undercoats!” She tells us. “I always wanted to wear a big dress and this is exactly what I chose.” Woody and his groomsmen hired their blue tailcoat suits and Woody teamed his with a grey doublebreasted waistcoat while the others wore blue styles to match their suits. “Our bridesmaids wore full-length blush dresses and were gifted jewellery, necklaces and bracelets that they wore on the day,” Jessica says.
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired a string quartet for the entire day to play as I walked down the aisle,” Jessica says. “They were superb and all of our guests loved them. After our ceremony, we enjoyed drinks and canapés.”
“A big thank you to our photographer, Jonny, who was like a friend on the day. He was cool, calm and casual and very communicative resulting in fantastic photographs! We insisted that he stay for a drink after he had finished.” – Jessica and Woody

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC
Our experts answer your big-day questions
YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY
Meet the expert: Maxine Ward is a celebrant based in Wiltshire who creates beautiful bespoke ceremonies and will travel to any venue nationwide. What are the benefits of booking an independent celebrant? Maxine says: By picking a celebrant, you can create a personalised ceremony that can be held in almost any venue of your choice either before, or after, a legal ceremony is held at a registry office. You’re not restricted to a licensed venue meaning that you can opt for a traditional
setting or something more alternative like a beach or garden and you can host it any time of the day or night. Your loved ones, and pets, can be a part of your ceremony and you can include elements from different cultures and heritages. You choose the words and can include your commitment to one another creating a lifelong promise. PRE-WEDDING PAMPER
Meet the expert: Juliet Draper is a hair and make-up artist covering weddings in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and throughout the Cotswolds. She’s also a TWIA South West Regional Finalist 2021. Please can you give me some hair and skincare tips to prepare for my winter wedding? Juliet says: During the winter, because of the cold air outside and central heating indoors, our hair and skin can start to feel dehydrated and lacking in moisture. When it comes to your hair, keep the water at a reasonable temperature when you’re showering because if it’s too hot, it can remove the moisture from your scalp resulting in flaky skin. Treating your locks to a conditioning treatment once or twice a week will lock in the moisture so that your hair looks healthy and glossy. By incorporating a gentle head massage at the same time, it will help to stimulate the hair follicles and blood flow to your scalp. During the winter months, it’s easy to forget to keep hydrated and drink plenty of water which is so important to keep your skin feeling and looking fresh. Remembering to eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables is a must, too. Incorporate an exfoliation treatment into your skincare routine which will help to remove any unwanted skin cells and keep it soft and supple. Why not treat yourself to a well earned facial?

FOR BOTH YOUR EYES ONLY
Meet the expert: Libby Clark is a wedding, family and boudoir photographer based in Devizes, Wiltshire. I’m considering booking a boudoir shoot to surprise my hubby-to-be. Can you tell me what to expect? Libby says: I’m now offering boudoir photo shoots in the comfort of your home for a limited time only at an introductory offer! A 90-minute shoot with five digital files to keep afterwards and more available to purchase costs £100 and makes a wonderful keepsake for you and your partner! We sometimes feel under pressure to look our best, keep in good shape, achieve perfect skin and have a healthy body, but our bodies come in all shapes and sizes and they deserve to be celebrated. The most attractive woman is a confident one and a boudoir shoot will do so much for your body confidence. You might want to capture yourself on camera because you’ve just reached a milestone birthday or are pregnant. The shoots happen in the privacy of your home so that you’re comfortable and have control. We will experiment with different looks and outfits in various areas of your home. The shoot is all about you and the results will be fantastic!
RUSTIC CHIC
Meet the expert: Adam and Tom are the design duo of engineers behind The Hairpin Leg Company based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, dedicated to crafting quality handmade furniture. We’re looking for some wedding theme inspiration – what were the most popular wedding aesthetics for 2021 on Instagram?
www.gettyimages.co.uk
Adam and Tom say: Research into popular wedding-related hashtags have revealed a rising interest in a new design trend known as Rustic Vogue. Research shows that #rusticweddings has been used on 2,164,541 Instagram posts this past year and that #rusticweddingdecor and #rusticweddingideas are also growing in popularity, with 261,243 and 27,055 posts respectively. Further research also reveals that Rustic Vogue has also risen in

search popularity within the last six months, and is continuing to do so as the year draws to a close. While there are always several factors that influence design trends like this one, likely, the surge in interest for rustic aesthetics for people planning weddings will be down to continued social lockdowns during winter. People’s focuses and what they think are important have shifted – many couples getting married are no longer opting for lavish, grand affairs, instead preferring simple, family-focused ceremonies and celebrations.” The Hairpin Leg Co | 01666 818 222 www.thehairpinlegcompany.co.uk www.facebook.com/thehairpinlegco www.instagram.com/thehairpinlegco

Memorable moments
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
READY, SET, POSE!

www.chrisblackledg ephotography.co.uk
Dave and I were unsure if we wanted to book a pre-wedding shoot as we don’t like our picture being taken and can be quite awkward in front of the camera. I spoke to a few of our married friends and they all recommended booking a shoot, so we decided to go for it. As we got engaged during the last lockdown, we had only met our photographer once over Skype, so we felt the shoot would also be a good way of getting to know him better ready for our big day. We’d arranged to meet on a beach in Kent, and as I’m sure you can tell from the pictures, it was extremely blustery and cold, so much so we were convinced we would appear blue
in the final shots! Although it wasn’t the perfect weather conditions, the combination of our windswept appearence – my hair must have looked like Medusa – onlookers and relaxed nature of our photographer made the shoot fun! I was very nervous beforehand, changing my outfit 10 times much to Dave’s annoyance, but once we were there we both felt at ease and had a great time. If you’re debating booking a shoot, I’d highly recommend it.
ACCESSORISE AND SHINE Wedding planning has been pretty straightforward overall, but when it came to choosing my accessories, I felt very overwhelmed. I wouldn’t describe myself as particularly girly, but I wanted something that would make me look beautiful on the day without being overpowering. After hours of shopping, I surprised myself by discovering I have a hidden love for pearls, so when I came across a pearl and floral hair clip, I just knew that I had to have it! I’m planning to finish my look with a pair of pearl earrings and a pendant necklace. My shoes have also been difficult. I’m 5ft 2ins and Dave is more than 6ft tall, so I was debating whether to wear heels to make the height difference less apparent. All the heels that I loved were really expensive and I was beginning to have nightmares about falling over as I walked down the aisle – I’m not the most gracious person even in flats! So, after looking at countless websites and going into what feels like every shoe shop in Essex, I finally decided to embrace my height and purchased a pair of glittery trainers with satin laces from Kate Spade. Although different to what I had orginally envisaged, I think the look suits my dress and it’s made me feel more relaxed knowing I won’t be going to A&E on the big day. Lastly, Dave and I went ring shopping – a traditonal wedding element we still wanted
for our nuptials. When we arrived at the jewellers, which was the same branch that Dave purchased my engagement ring from, I was pleasantly surprised to learn they had a matching wedding ring that I, of course, had to have. Luckily we are months ahead of our wedding, however we were made aware that some ring designs can take up to four months to arrive in the store – take note readers that are planning last-minute ‘I dos’! Dave never wears jewellery, so he was unsure of what style he wanted and all of the different types of metal and cuts were quite overwhelming for him. After doing some research and asking our friends for their opinions, he decided on a plain platinum band that looks great. Make sure you check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the perfect entertainment.

his year has flown by, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? It’s starting to dawn on me that this is my last as a Miss – eek – and July will creep around quickly so the countdown is officially on! My fiancé, Dave, and I have booked most of our suppliers including the venue, photographer and florist and I’ve even found my dress – but there’s still plenty to do! We’re getting really excited as the day draws closer, and the more I write about all of your beautiful weddings, the more real it seems that we will have our very own wedding day. In this issue, read all about our pre-wedding shoot and my search for the perfect accessories.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We’ve ordered wooden cutouts of our guests’ names to be used as place names. They look really cute and double up as favours.
Originally, we didn’t want light-up letters, but after seeing a set-up at one of our venue’s wedding shows, we loved the look and have hired them.
Dave and I have purchased an oak direction sign that will greet our guests as they enter our venue.
Although I was against the idea of wearing a veil, I tried one on with my dress and fell in love.
We came across a local company that creates personalised cake toppers, so we’ve decided to order one with figures of us and our cat.
Our venue offers guests a choice of ribbons when they enter the venue, pink if they want people to keep their distance, green if they’re comfortable to shake hands and blue if they are happy to hug. I think it’s a great way of making sure that everyone feels happy and safe on the day.
We’re planning to buy personalised cufflinks for Dave and his best man.
I love this buttonhole wrapped in twine and am going to ask our florist if she can do the same.
For our tables, we’re purchased concrete planters that are shaped like characters from our favourite films and tv shows to add a personal touch to the day. 61

FABULOUS FUNCTIONS, WILTSHIRE Owner Sandra Trusty and a talented team of local suppliers recently collaborated on a sustainable-themed shoot in the orangery at De Vere Tortworth Court that featured some wonderful handmade creations. Sandra tells us, “The sustainability angle is very present in the décor made for this shoot. We worked to a botanical theme and used driftwood and moss as the base then added silk flowers in lush green and neutral tones with hints of pale pink and cream. Everything can be reused again after a wedding and not an ounce of floral foam was anywhere to be seen!” BOOK IT: 07511 842 451 | www.fabulousfunctionsuk.com www.facebook.com/ukfabfunctions

The cup shape and wide straps are perfect for small and large busts, the split on the thigh is elongating, the pearlescent threading is visually flattering and the sheer lace panel on the lower back adds drama.” Launching alongside the gown is the Lumi veil retailing at £390 and crafted from 100% recycled tulle and lace. Q&A Our experts reveal all
DRESS DREAMS Meet the expert: Donna McCahill is the owner of Posy & Pearl Bridal Boutique based in Cirencester, Gloucestershire. I want to invest in some sustainable bridal accessories so do you have any ideas? Donna says: Sustainability is so important when choosing your bridal accessories. In our treasure trove, as well as bridal gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses, stylish occasion wear, hats and hair accessories, we also stock an exciting array of hand-crafted bridal jewellery. New to our collection are pieces made with 100% recycled wire and recycled glass beads that suit most of our stunning dresses. Meet the expert: Serena Ghale and Caroline Coleman are joint owners of award-winning CG Bridal Boutique based in Amesbury, Wiltshire where dress dreams do come true. We’re planning a winter wedding for next year and I want to buy my dress well ahead of time. What can you recommend for a fabulously festive wedding? Serena says: This time of year is increasingly popular among our brides-to-be having a winter wedding. Not only can prices be cheaper than other popular seasons, such as spring and summer, but winter weddings are full of beauty and charm. From stunning photographs taken in the snow or mist to country barn venues home to roaring log fires, there’s something very magical about them. Another big factor is the beautiful seasonal colours of bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns available at this time of the year that provide a wonderful contrast to the surroundings. Light-coloured bridal dresses other than ivory and white are a great choice so with that in mind, if you’re planning a seasonal celebration, you’ll want your dress to make a statement. Booking your nuptials during the colder months also means that dresses can be teamed with pretty capes, faux-fur boleros and chic shawls. From high necklines to long sleeves, sparkly embellishments and luxe fabrics, this is just a small selection of winter wedding dresses that we’re currently selling.

ogue is best known for her presenting roles across mainstream broadcast platforms such as Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch and Global Player podcast Spencer & Vogue as well as the newly released My Therapist Ghosted Me. Over the past year, Vogue has also landed a weekend show on Heart radio and has previously fronted her popular reality shows on Channel 4 - Spencer, Vogue and Baby Too and Spencer, Vogue and Wedding Two with husband, Spencer Matthews. Regularly showcasing candid family life to her 855k Instagram followers, Vogue is mum to Theodore and Gigi, both of whom inspired the collection with this British brand and have hero items named after them. How would you summarise your ROCO edit? This hand-picked edit of high-quality pieces has been two years in the making. I wanted the 15 stylish looks to be affordable, comfortable and easy for children to wear, so the collection offers a contemporary twist on classic styles for party dressing with trend-led silhouettes available in ice-cream pastel hues offering the perfect fit, designed to make special occasions unforgettable. 76
Who is the collection for? It’s aimed at little ones aged from three months to 14 years. There are cute cotton-mix and linen-style blend dresses, two-piece outfits and suits ideal for celebrations, parties and dressing flowergirls, junior bridesmaids and pageboys at weddings.
How did you find the design process? Did you have a favourite part? I loved working with Laura (Latif, creative director of ROCO) and the team. I’ve always wanted to create my own children’s wear line so to see the pieces evolve from the initial design meeting is so exciting. I immersed myself

in the creative process from start to finish, from designing the items to deciding on the colour palettes and finer details. The team were so easy to work with and it has been so much fun – a dream come true! If you had to choose, what’s your favourite piece from the collection? I love them all! The Margaux pink skirt and white top combination with a statement bow at the back looks so pretty.
It’s your little girl’s birthday party, what ROCO dress would you choose and why? I named the pink ruffle-neck Gigi babygrow after my daughter so it would have to be this! To shop, visit www.roco.co.uk You’ve got a summer wedding coming up, which ROCO outfit for a boy would you suggest and why? The Theodore blue-check dungarees are so smart teamed with a short-sleeved shirt! I named them after my son.

LIGHT AND SHADE
A new addition to the Lush range of perfumes, Shade offers a burst of warmth with comforting sandalwood. A fragrance with a conscience, each essential oil has its own story to tell including sandalwood from West Timor, which is extracted from protected and sustainable trees. It’s also made using a new source of olibanum oil from the Dayaxa region in Somaliland. It has full traceability down to the harvester level, with every step of the process being mapped on blockchain. In fact, Lush is working with its supplier to kickstart a project to train local women in small-scale olibanum oil distillation, a first in the community. Find it online at www.lush.com, where it’s priced at £25 for 30ml.
FEEL FLAWLESS
Speak to any wedding make-up artist and they’ll most likely tell you that primer is a must, which is why I wanted to share with you my latest discovery: Super Facialist Skin Perfecting Primer (£17). This little beauty creates a flawless-looking complexion using trusted skincare ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, and colour-correcting pigments. It cleverly blurs imperfections by counteracting the three most common concerns of redness, sallowness and dullness, while simultaneously working to bring back skin’s natural radiance. BACK TO ITS ROOTS
Molton Brown was born in the 1970s as a hair salon based in the heart of London’s shopping district on South Molton Street, which was frequented by the Rolling Stones and many other icons of the day. Creators Caroline Bernstein and her husband would hand mix all formulations in the basement, with conscious care for the environment at the forefront of the brand’s values even then. Now, on the brand’s 50th anniversary it has re-introduced hair care to its range. The collection contains four tailored collections, each with a botanical at the core of its formulation: balancing, volumising, hydrating and repairing. This approach means you can strategically build a healthy-hair routine into your big-day prep depending on the needs of your locks. Check out www.moltonbrown.co.uk

EDITOR LOVES
In my humble opinion Kristin Ess The One Signature Shampoo and The One Signature Conditioner are nothing short of miraculous! I won’t lie, my hair was in an embarrassing state when I decided to give these a go. I’d been swimming three days on the bounce – down water slides, through rapids, the works! My locks were a huge matted, straw-like mess. But with just one application the shampoo lathered like a dream and after leaving the conditioner in for the recommended three minutes, even wet my hair started to feel less knotty. I usually dread having to drag the brush through my hair after I’ve washed it, but in no time flat it was knot-free, smooth and ready to dry. Shiny, soft and looking their best, the state of my locks pre-Kristin Ess were a distant memory. This is definitely my new favourite hair routine and at £8 each they won’t break the bank. My advice? Head over to www.boots.com and pop them in your basket immediately!
NATURE’S HARVEST
When Estée Lauder created Youth-Dew bath oil in 1953, she revolutionised the fragrance industry and 75 years later, the brand is carrying on her legacy with the introduction of a new luxury fragrance collection. Each of the eight scents is inspired by nature’s most breathtaking moments such as the radiance of a sunset and the mystery of a moonlit flower. What’s more, Estée Lauder’s new ScentCapture Fragrance Extender technology is specially formulated to allow each perfume to last up to 12 hours after a single application – that should get you from vows to dancefloor no problem. The new Luxury Fragrance Collection (£130 100ml, £68 40ml) is available at Estée Lauder counters nationwide and at www.esteelauder.co.uk
THE EYES HAVE IT
READY OR KNOT
The Detangling Mist is the newest product in The Hair Boss’ award-winning range. The brand, founded by Lisa Shepherd, former British Hairdresser of the Year, simplifies hair care into a four-step routine, and this newbie fits tidily into part three. With life getting busier by the second, this is the quick, on-the-go answer to dry, unruly hair. Targeted to fix frizzy and damaged locks, it’s designed to smooth and strengthen, while protecting your hair and preventing breakage. Lisa says, “In between washes, The Detangling Mist will soften the hair, taming any unruly knots and re-adding the shine that it’s lost since the last wash.” Priced at £8.99, it’s available at https://thehairboss.co.uk
They say the eyes are the window to the soul, so they’re for sure a feature to make the most of on the big day. For those looking for longer lashes and full brows, The B Collection has launched its Lash & Brow Serum (£8.99). This all-natural, vegan, cruelty-free product nourishes and stimulates growth in these two key areas for eyes that’ll pop as you say “I do.” Use every night before bed following your usual skincare routine and wash off in the morning – super-easy. You can also use it during the day to set your brows in place. We love anything with a dual purpose! Find it at https://thebcollection.co.uk 79
From the INSIDE OUT
We caught up with owner and founder of Simone Thomas Wellness, Simone herself, to discover how taking care of yourself from the inside out is the ultimate path to wedding wellness
T
he impact stress and anxiety can have on our bodies should never be underestimated. So, the pandemic has a lot to answer for, even outside of Covid itself. If you’re finding that months of lockdown and wedding-related stress have taken their toll, you’re certainly not alone. Sadly, anxiety-induced skin concerns and even hair loss can quickly leave you feeling pretty far from your big-day best. Enter award-winning authority on hair health and wellness Simone Thomas, who’s spent her career sharing her expertise in nutrition, hairloss and bio-energetics. Alongside hair salons and hair-loss clinics, which boast an elite global clientele that includes royalty, celebrities and CEOs; she’s also the founder of Simone Thomas Wellness. We asked Simone for her help in guiding you back onto the path of wedding wellness. Based on your experience, what challenges are nearlyweds facing in the aftermath of the pandemic? 2020 had a huge affect on the wedding industry with 64 per cent of big days being cancelled or postponed, which means stress levels for everyone involved are now at an alltime high. A wedding is an important day that couples have invested a lot of time and money in, it’s something they’ve dreamed of. So, this is all having a negative impact on how we feel and how we sleep, with our skin and hair responding to that. A bad hair or skin day isn’t great at any time, let alone when the camera is constantly on you and you want to feel your best. What the last year has taught us though is
80
WELLNESS INTERVIEW to start working on yourself? You don’t have to go all out, but you might start looking at a nutrition plan, exercising or having hydra facials. However, I fully recognise there may be financial restraints, so this might not always be possible. In which case, I’d say three months is optimal, but the minimum is six weeks in advance. This way there’s time to flush out any nasties and create balance allowing the body to become stronger and progress. Many tell me they start to see a difference within two weeks. how to take a step back and invest in ourselves, as we often don’t listen to what our bodies need. At Simone Thomas Wellness, we’ve seen a huge increase in clients asking for advice on nutrition and bioenergetics, as well as hair loss. There’s also been a rise in skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, dermatitis of the scalp, eczema, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata, which is commonly linked to stress and hormones. In fact, stress has a huge knock on effect on our hormones as women. But men too are experiencing skin complaints and suffering hair loss. So, people preparing for their big days have really been struggling during lockdown. How can we turn this around – where do we start? What I always say is that everything starts in the gut. If you look after that, the body will look after you. I call it The Mothership. Poor gut health is the start of disease and can be linked to degenerative disorders, so it really should be the number one priority if you’re looking to feel the best version of yourself. Everyday Wellness, part of the Simone Thomas Wellness range, is a super-strength probiotic supplement containing six types of probiotics to improve gut health by introducing both good and bad bacteria, vital on a day-today basis. When I say “bad bacteria” people often ask me, why anyone would want that, but the body needs diversity to become stronger. These supplements also help to reduce the inflammation that occurs naturally in a body. Food can be a trigger, as can poor sleep patterns, stress, and the environment. Here, we’re focusing on removing any nasties so they don’t get absorbed into the cells. What advice would you give to those looking to achieve that natural-looking bridal glow without a face full of make-up? Skin Quencher is great for anyone wanting to feel youthful or who’s keen to avoid wearing lots for make-up. It’ll work from the inside out to give you that ultimate bridal glow. I’m also a huge fan of facials, but it’s more about what we put into our body rather than what we put on top of it. You have to work on yourself internally for the outside to glow. Yes, skincare products are going to have an effect, but if the inside isn’t right, it won’t be long term.
Biotin Brilliance too helps with mild skin irritation caused by stress. You may already have heard about biotins, they’re a B vitamin and have been talked about for a number of years as being vital for healthy skin, hair and nails. What can you suggest for brides, and bridesmaids, looking to grow their hair for a wedding? Our Ginkgo Biloba B+ plan contains folic acid with essential B vitamins and biotin, but if you don’t suffer from tiredness, then the biotin haircare plan is great for maintenance. Alternatively, if you have no specific worries about hair loss, but want to feel the best version of yourself, taking no chances with stress, Skin Quencher is great too. These plans are also great for grooms concerned about hair loss. What are the benefits of a haircare plan versus a single supplement? I formulated the plans because I learnt from experience that most people’s concept of what’s healthy actually isn’t. Most of us will happily invest in skincare and clothes, but not in how we feel internally. I think of the plans as a three-step process, much like a garden. To grow beautiful flowers, you need sunlight, amazing soil, and water. So, the probiotics are the ultimate go to, but there’s no point if you’re a fan of microwave meals or Macdonald’s. Unless you cook from scratch, you’re throwing away the goodness you’re putting into the body with the probiotics. Pairing them with Super Greens and Ginkgo Biloba B+ or Biotin Brilliance is then all about preparing the gut, balancing the body and removing toxins, as well as making sure you create the best environment for vitamin and mineral absorption. The most important step though is water: filtered versus tap, glass bottle versus plastic. Purely because of what can be absorbed through plastic as well as unfortunately what’s in mainstream water that comes through the tap.
Tell us a bit about the company’s ethos. Supplements are a big industry, but they’ve often received bad press because the products simply don’t do what they claim to. So, these are all things we’ve addressed across everything we do from the ingredients to manufacturing. We make sure that every process has full certification, including soil association and vegan accreditation. We’ve worked hard to ensure our products are vegan and our marine collagen is protected and sourced ethically. Everything is sustainable as much as possible. When our bottles are finished with they get made into tiles and flooring, and the packaging too is eco-friendly. Even the energy used in my office is renewable. We’re proud of the fact that recently we were responsible for 25 trees being planted in the rainforest due to our renewable energy contract.
WANT TO KNOW MORE? Simone’s book, Healthy Hair Happy Body, contains her comprehensive and motivational plan to transform wellbeing from the inside out. In each chapter she introduces concepts that provide insight into how the body functions, and what really makes a difference to achieving optimum health, sharing how tiny adjustments over time can lead to better results. It’s available at www.amazon.co.uk, priced at £15, with £1 going to Motor Neurone Disease Association. The Biotin Haircare Plan, £70; The Ginkgo Haircare Plan, £70; and SkinQuencher, £35 by Simone Thomas Wellness, are all available at https://simonethomaswellness.com
When would be the ideal time to start taking supplements in order to feel wedding-ready? To me there’s never a day too early! Most couples will start planning a year to two years in advance, so why not use the same timeline 81

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.
A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.
The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.
The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!
The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.
