Sisters Hollie Hulks and Olivia Kavanagh are celebrating the first anniversary of launching their business Balloons by All Things Pretty. Dorset’s former Courtyard Bridal boutique has a new name and a new home. Owner Marie Bennett has rebranded the business and taken it back to its roots as The Bride’s Wardrobe, the name she originally intended for it when she set up the company in 2016. She explains, “While shopping for my own wedding dress, I discovered a gorgeous little boutique up for sale, so I bought it lock, stock and barrel. As it was situated in a lovely courtyard I decided to keep the name and traded as Courtyard Bridal for almost six years.” Then Covid happened and during lockdown she decided to take everything home and have one of her outbuildings converted into a bridal boutique. “As I’d changed the location, what better time to take the company back to its maiden name, The Bride’s Wardrobe,” Marie adds. Set in the rural village of Winterborne Kingston, Blandford, The Bride’s Wardrobe offers an exclusive one-to-one experience, where brides can come, relax and have fun trying on wedding dresses. fter getting together as students at Bournemouth University in 2012, Zoë and Steve got engaged in New York six years later. The trip was a surprise for Zoë who was blindfolded at home in the kitchen before being whisked off to Heathrow Airport. “Steve revealed the destination under the departures board holding an apple with the word ‘big’ written on it,” recalls Zoë. While they were there, Steve popped the question in Central Park, and the proposal was photographed by a passerby walking their dog. “It was a complete shock as we’d just bought our first home together, a major renovation project which took us 10 months to complete before we could move in.” adds Zoë.

PLAN B They started planning their big day at the beginning of 2020 before the pandemic struck. “We originally intended to have 120 to 150 guests but with all the uncertainty at the time, we decided in December last year to have a small, intimate wedding instead with just our parents, siblings and their partners. Then, once restrictions are lifted, we plan to have a big evening reception party with all our extended family and friends,” explains Zoë.

THE TIME AND THE PLACE When it came to choosing where to wed they had their hearts set on Hampshire’s beautiful New Forest. Zoë explains, “When we were dating and living in Bournemouth we used to take day trips to the New Forest. I also used to go there on family camping holidays when I was a child, so it holds lots of happy memories for us.” They set the date for 4th June this year at the Balmer Lawn Hotel & Spa, Brockenhurst in the heart of the forest and opted for a stylish green and gold colour scheme. Zoë adds, “Ruth, the wedding coordinator at the venue, was so helpful and reassuring during what could have been a stressful time to plan a wedding.”

LOOKING THE PART Zoë bought her dress from ASOS and her mum made alterations to personalise it. As her something old and something blue, she wore her grandmother’s sapphire bracelet, a sentimental family piece, as her mum also wore it on her wedding day. Her something borrowed was a gold sweetheart necklace which her 31 

REAL WEDDINGS dad had given her mum as a Valentine’s present and gold cuff earrings, a wedding day gift from Steve, completed the look as her something new. A family duo was on hand for the finishing bridal touches with Zoë’s sister Charlotte on hair and sister-inlaw Kimberley on make-up. The bridesmaids wore dresses from high street stores in complementary shades of green to go with the colour scheme. Steve and both dads also looked dashing in matching Marc Darcy three-piece suits with gold ties and pocket squares.

ALL IN THE DETAIL The couple were able to put their own stamp on the day, thanks to the accommodating team at the venue. Zoë’s mum Margaret did the floral arrangements for the candelabra as an added personal touch, Steve’s sister Kimberley made their Victoria sponge cake and his dad lent them his Bentley car. Zoë’s sister Charlotte designed the table plan and menus and created the place names using rhododendron leaves from their parents’ garden. “The accommodating chef also amended their seven-course taster menu to cater for guests’ dietary requirements and included a selection of curated wines to complement the food,” adds Zoë.

TIME TO CELEBRATE To add to the atmosphere pianist Mark Busell played during the champagne reception and wedding breakfast. Afterwards everyone had fun chatting and playing table games. “Sitting down for a meal in the company of our closest family, after having not been able to do so for almost a year-and-a-half due to the pandemic, was really special,” remembers Zoë. “Our family made our day. It was a labour of love and they all contributed to the preparations in some way and we felt so grateful to them for all their help and support.”

ess and Sam first met in person at Heathrow Airport at the start of their gap year volunteering in rural Uganda. He had his eye on her from the get go, but she was unimpressed after he cut his foot open after jumping off the roof of a boat on day two of the trip. However, from that ill-fated incident love blossomed. “He needed to get his stitches removed and asked me to go to the town with him a few weeks later. So, I did, thinking there was no way I would turn down a hot meal and a warm shower. Little did I know that Sam and I would talk for hours and hours. It was like rediscovering a best friend who you’d known for years but had lost contact with. It was the strangest feeling. I loved how comfortable I felt with him and how open we could both be with each other. He has the biggest heart and loves an adventure, even if it may be a little risky sometimes!” laughs Jess. “Having met Jess on Facebook before going to Uganda, I thought she was probably pretty cool. Then having the opportunity to spend time together in one of the most amazing countries, doing amazing stuff and eating incredible food, I realised I was wrong. She wasn’t pretty cool, she was far more than that and I knew very quickly that I’d fallen for her,” Sam adds. During a camping trip in July last year, he got down on one knee in the mud and asked Jess to marry him. “The proposal was a complete surprise although I’d been nagging him for ages. I knew it was coming, but had no idea when,” reveals Jess. They tied the knot on 22nd May 2021 at St Peter and Holy Cross Church in Wherwell, Hampshire where both her mother and granny were married. They celebrated afterwards with a reception in the garden of her granny’s home in the village followed by Sunday lunch the next day. Read on for Jess’ account of their wedding weekend…

Kathryn and Pete’s fun wedding was a joyous celebration of all their favourite things

athryn and Peter had been friends for years before a lightbulb moment lit the spark of romance. “We were both widowed 18 years ago and my late husband knew Pete from our local nature reserve in Bishop’s Waltham. We all used to socialise together and after we both lost our partners, we continued to be friends,” explains Kathryn. “It wasn’t until Pete was giving a wildlife talk in a local hall that I realised I was attracted to him!” she reveals. After getting together, they discussed getting married, but not for a while, so when Pete popped the question, it was completely out-of-the-blue. “We were on the stone pier in Penzance, Cornwall when he asked me to marry him and it was definitely a surprise!” She said ‘yes’, of course! They tied the knot on 31st August, 2019 at St Peter’s Church, Bishop’s Waltham followed by a reception at Rookesbury Park, Wickham. Read on for Kathryn’s account of their big day… 43

We’d both discussed from early on that we’d like to get married in St Peter’s Church.

The flowers were arranged by my mum and they were out of this world. We re-used the end-of-aisle arrangements to decorate the top table at the reception.

Finding Pete’s outfit was tricky as he’s 6ft 2ins tall. We finally discovered the wonderful Charles Gale in Fareham who were brilliant and we hired deep blue tails for Pete and one of his best men. The other wore a matching jacket and we bought chino-style trousers to go with them.

“The groomsmen – there were a lot of them – wore blue jackets and cream waistcoats.”

Friends lent us two lovely vintage cars for our wedding transport; a pink and white Citroën 2CV and a baby blue VW Beetle.

I met the lovely Mary from Twirl Bridal at a wedding fair at Rookesbury Park and as soon as I saw my Loulou dress I loved it. It looked great on – very ‘me’ and wonderfully flattering for a curvy lady! It had big fuchsia pink appliqué flowers and I had my shoes dyed to match.

“We had family to play and sing in the church and at the Palace Ruins afterwards.”

After the ceremony we had a celebratory drink in the Palace Ruins in Bishop’s Waltham – we love it there!

I loved walking from the church down the high street to the Palace Ruins with all our guests following behind.

My daughters were bridesmaids and they looked fantastic in their fuchsia pink dresses. Their shoes were dyed green to match the leaves of the flowers on my dress.

As soon as I saw Rookesbury Park, I knew I wanted to hold our reception there. It’s full of character and in a beautiful setting. 45

“The table plan had an ornithological theme and the tables were named after different birds.”

Our guests brought an assortment of wild and garden flowers in glass containers for the centrepieces.

A friend made our fruitcakes which were decorated with white icing, coloured ribbon and pink sugarpaste roses.

We had a saxophonist and a singer to entertain our guests at the reception, followed by a ceilidh band in the evening and a DJ later.

Wedding coordinator Natasha Gilchrist organised the shoot to show off the beautiful location and wealth of local talent on the doorstep. She says, “What better way to stage a bridal photo shoot than on one of my own local beaches. It was important to me to bring together a team of Dorset and Hampshire wedding suppliers, so we could shout about weddings across the south coast. With the stunning beach backdrop, the aim was to style a simple but romantic, elegant and fun shoot allowing the sand, sea and views to do the talking.” The natural floaty feel was accentuated with delicate styling including mocha, caramel and neutral tones, seashells, sandcastles and a mix of dried and fresh florals.

ownsizing your wedding doesn’t have to mean compromising on style and even though many people are wanting to spend more time outdoors at the moment, you don’t have to be limited to a rustic theme either. You can have an intimate al fresco wedding oozing with elegance, without a haybale in sight. Gemma Hinze from Moon Flower Events organised this stunning shoot to show anything’s possible with the right finishing touches. Set within the grounds of a private family home, with the help of talented local suppliers she transformed the space into a magical big-day set-up. “I wanted to create an elegant, micro, garden wedding, to show that you don’t have to have a huge amount of space to be able to hold a beautiful celebration,” she explains. “When it came to the styling, I didn’t want to go down the predictable rustic route just because we were using the bell tents. I decided therefore to make it feel as elegant as possible.” The tents provided an inviting cosy atmosphere with the largest decked out with a multitude of fairylights and elegant floral arrangements for the wedding breakfast. Crisp white bedding and a mix of navy and pink accessories gave the romantic bridal suite the feel of an upscale hotel. In keeping with a small intimate gathering, a few extra bell tents were also added for guests to stay in. “To help tie all the elements together, I used festoon lights and the outdoor dancefloor and mobile bar completed the scene,” adds Gemma.

She says,“With our bold colours and ethical jewellery we wanted to push the boundaries of traditional wedding imagery and combine our coastal location with interior glamour and contrasting textures.” 81

Everything’s organised for my big day and I should be feeling great, but I can’t stop worrying about the wedding morning and getting my hair and all the bridal party ready in time! Shannon says: First of all relax and enjoy this special time and rest assured, your hair stylist will want to make sure you and your bridal party have the best start to the day. The aim is to make sure the morning runs perfectly so that you can spend your time relaxing and feeling excited for the day ahead. All of the final details such as arrival time, location and a rough schedule should be prepared beforehand after talking everything through at your trial, so you won’t have anything to worry about on your wedding morning. We always work out exactly how long we need with each member of the bridal party to ensure that everyone has plenty of time in the hair and make-up chair. Then all that’s needed on the day is enough space to set up, a comfy chair for you to sit on (both preferably by a window to get as much natural light as possible) and finally for the whole bridal gang to be aware of the schedule so that the timing runs without a hitch. As a general rule it’s a good idea to have everyone ready about an hour before the ceremony, but this depends on your personal preferences and what else you may have planned for the wedding morning. How long you need to get changed into your dress, as well as travel to your venue and time for photos are all things to consider too. We like to allow a little extra time as well for any final touch-ups and to help with things like fitting your veil or hair accessories. We’ve downsized our wedding after postponing it twice and are putting aside some of the budget for a bumper party with all our friends and family next year. We were originally planning to have a videographer to film our whole day but wonder if it’s worth it now. What would you advise? Simon says: The important thing to remember in these changing times is not to over commit yourself financially. So why have a video? This is something that’s often asked and many of my couples say that having their wedding filmed ended up being one of the best decisions they made for their big day. It’s about capturing all the sights, sounds and emotions, providing you with lasting memories. As well as your own personal recollections, your photographer will capture a range of special moments and a beautifully crafted film will add a whole extra dimension, including scenes previously unseen by you and your partner. The approach that I’ve found works well for my couples is to initially book the lowest priced package (normally the ceremony only) – that way you can secure the services of your preferred supplier and at the very least will have a wonderful film of you getting married, the lead up to it and immediately afterwards. By doing this, you’re not over committing and can budget and plan for everything else that you want for your wedding. Once the date is in the diary, nearer to the time, I then give my couples the option to upgrade and extend their coverage, budget allowing and at the original prices quoted at the time of booking, to include all aspects of their day. People also often ask whether having a videographer at a wedding is obtrusive? The answer to that is, if filmed properly, absolutely not! The very best moments are always the ones where your friends and family don’t even realise they’re being filmed – that’s the beauty of a long lens!

We’ve recently booked our wedding venue for next year and I’m excited to get cracking with shopping for my dream dress but need to keep a tight rein on the purse strings. What would you advise so I can enjoy the experience to the full? Mary says: Now you have your venue, you can think about what dress will suit both you, the setting and theme (if you have one). To help get you started, here are some of my top tips: ❤ Research online for dress boutiques near you. ❤ Check out their websites and make a list of your favourites. ❤ Ring round and make one or two appointments initially. ❤ Ask what the price range is, if not advertised. Let them know your maximum spend and don’t be embarrassed to say that you’re on a tight budget. ❤ Find out if the boutique sells from stock samples at a reduced price and if you’ve spotted some designs on their website that you like, what sizes are available to you. ❤ If you’ve no pre-set idea what’s likely to suit you, be guided by the staff. ❤ You can also find places that sell pre-loved gowns. ❤ Shopping at a boutique gives you the opportunity to not only try on the dresses, but also take advantage of the staff’s expertise and experience. Your appointment is most likely to be one-on-one and the aim is to make you feel relaxed. Remember you are as important as any other bride who walks through the door, so enjoy this special time. We’re great foodie fans but want to avoid getting too carried away when it comes to the catering for our wedding. How can we have great food, that looks and tastes great, without breaking the bank? Matt says: I believe the key to getting the food right is simplicity, so look for a caterer who doesn’t over complicate things. You can have exceptional food on a budget by keeping things simple and without compromising on style or taste. If you use high quality produce you can let the flavour shine through and present the food in an innovative way. The current trend is still for more informal dining, rather than a formal sit-down meal, which is where street food and sharing platters have done exceptionally well. Not only cost effective they’re a great way to feed a crowd and help guests relax and mingle. Whatever you choose, to avoid overspending, let your caterer know your budget right from the start so you can work together to create what’s right for your wedding and your pocket. Look for versatile, moneysaving options too. For example, we’ve recently added to our offering with a mobile bar as well as our food truck which allows us to reduce some of the hire costs when booked together, saving some of the big-day budget.
