hat a difference a few weeks make! The world of weddings has gone from nought to sixty since restrictions have been lifted. The floodgates have opened and suppliers up and down the region are busier than ever with all the pent-up demand and postponed weddings. The Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset has hosted its first ever wedding. Rachel and Daniel Titley said ‘I do’ at the museum in front of a Second World War tank, earning themselves a place in the venue’s history book. Their son Adam played an important role and was able to pick his favourite tank for them to say their vows in front of. “When we heard couples could get married at The Tank Museum, knowing how much Adam loves it there, made the choice simple for us.,” says Rachel. “The team was amazing and we couldn’t have asked for more! Being able to include our son in the decision-making process and allowing him to plan everything was hugely important. Adam absolutely loves The Tank Museum, it’s his favourite place. Now every time we come back to visit, we’ll have a shared special memory as a family as well.” Weddings at The Tank Museum were launched in January this year and bookings are already being taken for 2022. Events Manager Rosanna Dean adds, “Having our in-house catering team means wedding guests can enjoy everything from afternoon tea to a sumptuous wedding breakfast.” The venue can cater for weddings of all sizes with up to as many as 1,000 guests, what’s more all profits go to help support the museum charity and preserve history for generations to come. New Forest venue the Balmer Lawn Hotel has launched a romantic Twilight package for couples looking for a chilled, intimate celebration. Wend your way through the wrought iron gateway, down the long avenue of lime trees to discover this historic venue. Beautiful inside and out, with two conservatories flanking a pillared orangery, Avington Park dates back to the 10th century and has a wonderfully grand feel to the interior. Surrounded by 150 acres of parkland, the beautifully kept grounds include two resident peacocks and lush lawns bordering the River Itchen, providing a picturesque scene all year round. Inside there are a wealth of wow-factor rooms licensed for ceremonies, including the beautifully decorated main hall. With marbled pillars and an impressive fireplace it leads into the library which boasts a grand piano and wonderful views of the south lawn. Combined with the adjoining library, you can host a reception for 100 seated guests and the room can be turned around later for the evening celebration

with space for entertainment and a band. Larger wedding parties can be hosted in a marquee adjoining the library.

ucy and Toby met at work and were instantly drawn to each other and after a few short months were already the best of friends. Sharing a love of music, good food and the great outdoors, friendship soon blossomed into romance. On a getaway to Cornwall in August 2020 Toby popped the question on the beach in St Mawes. “He proposed on the first morning we were there and it was a complete surprise! He had visions of it being a beautiful, picturesque affair, but the weather had other ideas,” reveals Lucy. “He took me on a walk in the pouring rain and just before I could complain and turn back, he got down on one knee. It was a beautiful moment, made even better as he’d booked an appointment in Truro for later that day for me to choose my own engagement ring. Looking back now, we wouldn’t have had it any other way.” They tied the knot on 15th April this year in The Orangery at Houghton Lodge Gardens, Hampshire followed by a reception on The Terrace. anni and Rich met through a dating app; she liked his cheeky-chappy look, he fell for her smile and the rest, as they say, is history! Rich popped the question during a weekend away glamping. “While it was a very romantic setting, his timing wasn’t particularly great as I was doing the washing up at the time!” laughs Danni. She said ’yes’ though and to celebrate, they spent the day riding the rollercoasters at Alton Towers. They tied the knot at Careys Manor in the glorious New Forest on 3rd July this year. Read on for Danni’s account of their big day...

We’d always dreamed of having a woodland wedding and Careys Manor is in a beautiful New Forest setting. It was close to our family and friends and the outside space was great for socialising.

We’re a family of car lovers so it was great to travel to the venue in it with my best man.” – Rich We both felt very nervous in the lead-up to the day, but having delayed it for almost a year, we were really looking forward to getting married.

Our cockapoo Oakley joined us for a while, but he jumped up on my wedding dress with muddy paws before any photos had been taken!

I wanted my bridesmaid to feel comfortable on the day so she wore a simple mint green dress.

My dress was aptly named summer.

The tables were named after different types of trees and I worked with one of my friends to design the save-the-dates, invites and table plan.

et in the heart of the glorious New Forest, the Montagu Arms Hotel, Beaulieu provided the perfect backdrop for this country wedding styled shoot. Organised by wedding planner Holly Annetts and photographer Dom Brenton to celebrate the English summer, it was shot just as the garden roses were coming into bloom. The bride’s classic English-rose complexion fitted the theme perfectly. An abundance of summer blooms were used throughout from the bouquets to decorating the ceremony and intimate dining room. Stunning gowns, a showstopping car, four-tier wedding cake and Insta-worthy props added to the picture-perfect scene.

Light blush tones were used to bring out the bride’s natural beauty and a timeless updo added to the romantic vibe.

“I wanted to create a fresh, classic bridal look perfect for an English Rose and I kept the hair classic with a modern twist. The bridal bouquet echoed the feel of a glorious English summer’s day with a mix of white peonies, pink roses and other blooms creating a heavenly summer fragrance. 49

A floral arc adorned the heavy oak fireplace in the ceremony room with oak leaves and a rich mix of green foliage to decorate the mantelpiece. Horseshoes were also included in the décor as a nod to the New Forest venue.

Top tips from local experts BRIDAL GLOW

My skin has suffered damage over the years from not wearing sun protection when I was younger, leaving me with brown spots and uneven patches on my face. What can I do to conceal them for my wedding day without having to cake my face in make-up? Melinda says: Firstly, start looking after your skin with a good routine from now on. Use factor 30 sun protection throughout the year and SPF 50 in the summer to help prevent more brown patches. Look into treatments; there are various facial ones designed to help for problems such as dull skin, brown patches, and age spots. There are also skincare products you can use yourself such as facial scrubs, brightening creams and essential oils which I’ve found can help improve discolouration. It’s best to speak to a beautician first to discuss the best options. To cover blemishes, once your skin is prepped for make-up with a moisturiser and primer it’s important to have a concealer that provides good coverage to start with. This needs to be applied by roll patting it on with a finger (the ring finger is good for this) or with a small sponge or brush, building it up in thin layers if necessary. ‘Less is more’ when it comes to concealer to avoid caking and you may need to experiment to find the right shade. A colour correcting concealer can be helpful for this but I’d suggest getting some help in choosing the correct one for your skin discoloration. Next apply a foundation, choose one that matches your lightest skin tone, not the darker pigmentation. One with an illuminating quality or

a full-coverage foundation that gives a dewy appearance will make your complexion look healthy. Be careful applying foundation over the problem areas. If there are still some that need more coverage, apply a thin layer of either concealer (make sure it tones in with your foundation) or an extra thin layer of foundation in the specific spot by roll patting or using a small brush for more precision. You can then softly set it with a translucent powder. I like Mary Kay Cosmetics colourless one as it gives a beautiful healthy sheen. To finish, use a light dusting of bronzer, a blusher with some shimmer plus a cheek highlighter for a beautiful bridal glow. Melinda Hollis | Beautician | www.makeoversbymelinda.co.uk

LOVE YOUR CURLS I have very curly hair which can be hard to manage. Which kind of bridal style is most likely to suit me, last all day and control frizz even in bad weather? Clarice says: I love to see brides with gorgeous natural curls and I would always recommend working with what you have rather than against it. In my experience the best kind of style for your type of hair is an updo with natural volume, minimal backcombing and definition. With this look, once your hair is pinned in place, it should stay put even if the weather is bad. I like to use a smoothing cream and small barrel tongs to enhance wavy locks. It also helps to minimise frizz and tease curls into place when they’re wanting to do their own thing! Creating plaits and twists to pin your hair back is not only a lovely way to add texture, but also to hold your style in place and tame those ‘flyaways’. For an effortless look a low or high bun works well, leaving a few loose tendrils to frame the face for a soft effect. If you want something more secure, I’d suggest a halo braid, teasing out the plait to add height and again leaving a few tousled curls loose around the hairline. For the best results, I recommend using a volumising powder at the roots, smoothing cream for defining curls and taming frizz and a pump hairspray to finish. YOUR BEST YOU I have a quirky personality and want my wedding to be different and reflect my style. What would you suggest for my bridal make-up? Melissa says: Every bride wants to look and feel their best on their wedding day, and when they do, the confidence and happiness shines through for all to see! If that means having the dark smoky eyes or bright red lipstick you love – then go for it! There are no rules for how a bride should look, you just need to make sure you feel like ‘you’ on the day. If you’re unsure about what kind of alternative style you want, then I’d definitely suggest having a trial beforehand so you can experiment with different looks. Some favourites for my brides have included black and purple smoky eyes, one who loved glitter had a touch of sparkle added to her eye make-up, and another went for the true vintage ‘50s look. Whatever you choose, just make sure it makes you smile when you look in the mirror on your wedding morning!’ Melissa Kassinen | Hair and make-up artist | www.madetoperfection.co.uk

Caroline says: One of my recent brides Harriet (pictured) wanted a fresh, romantic dewy look with a hint of bronze for her country wedding. Here’s how to achieve it: ♥ I used a mixture of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum and their Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation in Fresco. ♥ Add a touch of colour to the cheeks with NARS Orgasm Blush and a sweep of Hourglass Ambient Highlighter. ♥ For the eyes I used subtle, soft pink shades from the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Eye Palette with a slick of Chanel Cassis Waterproof Eyeliner. ♥ For the finishing touch I topped Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lips with Tom Ford Bronzer in 01 Gold Dust. This look is easily adaptable to most skin types as long as you have reasonably clear, well moisturised skin. The dewy effect is very popular, it always looks really fresh and I love creating it. We want to reflect the season with on-trend styling and decorative details for our autumn wedding and need inspiration. Can you help? Holly says: In the aftermath of the last 18 months, many couples are continuing to opt for outdoor ceremonies and receptions where possible. With this in mind, secret-garden and al fresco boho themes will be popular. To create a wonderful autumnal feel, dried flowers are ideal in seasonal mustard yellow and burnt orange tones. Sustainability and eco-credentials are important considerations and can be incorporated into your wedding by using local suppliers to reduce the carbon footprint of your day. Hiring props, using recycled materials and sourcing reusable decorative items such as glass jars for the centrepieces and decorations are also options for a greener wedding. Giving packets of wildflower seeds as wedding favours is popular too and a great way of getting your guests involved in the sustainability of your wedding day. To tie in with the season homemade wooden items, such as log slices, wooden pallets and table plans work well. Pairing dark wood with orange, red and yellow flowers is great for autumn and looks fantastic too. Not forgetting the lighting; think lots of twinkly fairylights to give your outdoor or indoor space a magical feel.

We want to set the tone for our October wedding from the get-go. How can we make sure our stationery gives our guests a taste of what’s to come? Hannah says: As with most aspects of design; be it graphic, interior or fashion, a great way to generate ideas is to look to the season. Nature can be such a strong inspiration, evoking thoughts which all of us can relate to. For an autumnal invitation, those classic ‘leaf-turning’ colours like amber, dark green and rich burgundy are the perfect choice. Although there’s nothing to say you can’t still have a pop of colour, as long as it complements the other tones. Imagine fuscia or magenta, which can be found in the beautiful sunsets that take place at the changing of the season. When it comes to textures, an uncoated card stock or brown Kraft paper is great for that earthy tone; think crunchy forest floors or logs stacked in a roaring open fire. Equally, a coloured stock with single colour print could have a similarly stand-out effect if you’re looking for a more modern style to the traditional rustic look. Metallics are also a great way to reflect the season. Rich bronze foils and digital gold inks would complement an autumnal colour palette perfectly. A vibrant orange invitation with gold text would make for funky, contemporary stationery or a deep burgundy and bronze palette could add a rich and indulgent flavour, like a glass of full-bodied red wine on an October evening! Finally, don’t forget your envelopes! Let your guests be dazzled from the moment the invitation lands on their doormat. If you’re handwriting the addresses, choose a pen to complement your colour scheme, with a fine tip for accuracy. We’re getting married in the autumn and would love to offer guests a delicious seasonal menu. What would you recommend? Matt says: Autumn is a great time of year for food with lots of possibilities for some fabulous flavour combinations. Locally caught mackerel is available early in the season before they head out to warmer waters for the winter. I like to cure and oak-smoke the fillets and simply serve them with a celeriac and fresh apple remoulade sauce, apple gel and dill. One of my favourite dishes for this time of year is locally reared, roasted Hampshire pork fillet with an apple cider jus, topped with a crackling crumb and served with apple and sage compote, sautéed New Forest wild mushrooms and savoy cabbage and olive oil mash. Another great combination is sea bass, crab and fennel. This dish is a taste sensation featuring pan-fried, line-caught Lymington sea bass with a Dorset crab and chervil mayonnaise, roasted fennel, orange and a crab and white-wine sauce. Dessert wise, I love the classic pairing of chocolate and orange – think dark chocolate delice with chocolate soil, chocolate tuille, fresh orange, orange jelly and vanilla cream. Naked and semi-naked creations are a popular option and can be tailored to reflect the time of year using different types of seasonal fruits and flowers. Ivy or fern decorations and earthy colours like orange, brown and yellow add an extra autumnal feel. Cakes made to look like log slices are another favourite, decorated with autumnal leaves, fir and pine cones, forest animal designs or flowers. Couples often like to have their initials or names added to look like a carving on a tree trunk, which adds a lovely personal touch. As for the taste, classic vanilla is always a winner, along with lemon or salted caramel. Fruit cakes with a twist, including papaya, mango or pineapple pieces is another way to add flavour and pops of autumnal colours to surprise your guests when the cake is cut. Room Mate Hotels, the international hotel chain, has opened Hotel Room Mate Filippo and Gran Filippo Apartments in Rome. Located 500 metres from the emblematic Spanish Steps and a ten-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, the hotel and the apartments are designed by interior designer Tomas Alía, who was inspired by the refined aesthetics of the 1940s. The hotel has 30 rooms divided into three categories: superior, deluxe and executive, its imposing façade stands out with elegant and subtle flat pilasters and striking lighting that creates a chandelier effect throughout the street acting as a magnet to passers-by. The lobby features a forest of sculptural, three-dimensional palm trees, complete with a dome supported by granite columns. The two interior courtyards - the two lungs of the building - are arranged with sienna- and celadon-colored lattices while the rest of the common areas are divided into a large meeting room with a library effect and the breakfast room, decorated with modulations in marble, gilded metals and geometric shapes.
