Summer loving H
ello lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding. It’s finally summer, my favourite time of year, and I’m really enjoying the warmer temperatures and sunny skies. There’s something so refreshing about the time of year, I have so much more energy and there’s even more to do. I personally love the brighter evenings and venturing outdoors more in the garden and enjoying family barbecues, beach days and picnics. This summer will be one of the best seasons we’ve had in a long while with weddings back in full swing. Plus, my best friend and colleague Melissa will be exchanging vows in July to the lovely Dave – I’m super excited! As a bridesmaid, there hasn’t been anything better than helping someone your care about plan such an important event. I’m so proud of what they have both achieved, and I know their day will be wonderful. As we reach the busy wedding season, it’s great to see so many talented suppliers working hard to create dream events. This time of year is perfect for weddings, especially al fresco events, and the longer daylight means there’s no rush for taking memorable images – plus, I love a good golden-hour shot! We’ve showcased some of the top companies from around the counties to help you plan the perfect day. It doesn’t matter what time of year you’re exchanging vows; our experts prove that stunning images can be captured in rain, snow or sunshine in our photography feature. In this issue, our experts share key advice to help you create amazing looks for your dearest and dearest. We’ve got you covered, from bridesmaid, groomsmen and mother-of-the-bride inspiration. When I first saw the images from this styled shoot at Hinwick Hall House & Gardens, I instantly fell in love! Shoot coordinator Gemma Harris at Gemma Harris Hair Design brought together a team of talented suppliers to create an elegant day with romantic and modern touches. Valentina Val Photo captured the day perfectly. Owner Valentina Ledyukova says, “We were inspired to showcase a diversity in brides, and our goal was to show that every person is beautiful. The hair and make-up was focused on soft natural beauty with an added touch of glam. We opted for flowing and romantic gowns for the models and then we switched to a more fitted-glam look later in the evening. “The stunning light-filled rooms of Hinwick Hall inspired us to create an elegant and feminine look. Floral arrangement and bouquets were chosen around the décor and venue to complement the spaces.” Check out the stunning shoot and discover the talented team here: www.yourhertsbeds.wedding/news
WANT EVEN MORE INSPIRATION?
THE WEDDING VOWS Local Hemel Hempstead celebrant Kelly Hawes has won the prestigious award of Celebrant of the Year, East of England at The Wedding Industry Awards 2022. The award show was established in 2011 to recognise and reward some of the most talented suppliers in the wedding industry, while helping pairs decide on trustworthy businesses. Owner Kelly was nominated by one of her brides in October 2021, which then encouraged her to enter the awards for the very first time. When voting, past couples score companies based on various aspects of their service. It’s not just about the total number of votes each business gets, but the quality of the scorecards. Combining the average voter score and the judging process will determine regional finalists, the regional winners and the national winners. As an independent celebrant, Kelly’s service to her couples includes meeting and getting to know each pair well before writing and presenting a wedding ceremony that completely encapsulates their personalities. Every ceremony is personal and performed with a modern and fun touch. Check out: www.kellyhcelebrant.co.uk

KNEBWORTH HOUSE AND BARNS 01438 813 825 | www.knebworthhouse.com Set in 250 acres of parkland, Knebworth House and Barns is a spectacular historic house that’s home to grazing herds of deer. The gardens are delightful throughout each season and feature a stunning sunken lawn, colourful borders and trees that create the perfect backdrop for wedding photography. The estate dates back to the 1600s and is ideal for couples seeking a sophisticated and classic setting for their special day. The striking exterior features authentic turrets, gargoyles, and domes, while the interior features Victorian and Jacobean décor that creates an elegant setting. During the summer months, lovebirds can tie the knot in the formal gardens by the Garden Gazebo surrounded by 150 loved ones. For those looking to host their whole wedding in one location, the Banqueting Hall in the Knebworth House can accommodate 100 people for the “I dos”, 60 for wedding breakfasts and 180 for receptions. Or, why not opt for the Manor & Lodge Barn accompanied by 150 loved ones for the

Alternatively, the Cobbold Barn & Gardens can host 150 for the vows, 120 for wedding breakfasts, and 250 for receptions. Lastly, the sunken lawn is perfect for receptions with 180 nearest and dearest. The dedicated event team at Knebworth House & Barns is on hand to help couples turn their dream weddings into a reality. They offer several all-inclusive packages to match different styles and preferences.

When couples book the venue, the team offers a menu tasting session to try some dishes. The wedding coordinator will work with pairs to ensure every detail is tailored to their liking, while the in-house executive chef can help fine-tune dining options. WARE PRIORY 01920 460 316 | www.warepriory.co.uk Situated in seven acres of picturesque gardens, Ware Priory is a beautiful, traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times. The main building is stunning, with a whitewashed frontage and a stonewalled exterior surrounded by flower beds and distinctive windows. Multiple spaces at the property provide the perfect settings for weddings. The team restored The Priory Hall in the 1990s, where Medieval graffiti was uncovered and Victorian murals restored. This area can accommodate 100 guests for the “I dos”, 80 for wedding breakfasts and 100 for evening receptions. Or why not exchange vows in The Conservatory, which has a bright and spacious interior with easy access to the riverside gardens for 100 people? The space can accommodate wedding breakfasts for 120 guests and evening celebrations for 150. Another option is The Hadsley Room, which can host 40 guests and boasts a crown-post roof and vaulted ceiling. After the ceremony, the staff can transform the space for
wedding breakfasts with 30 people and evening receptions with 40. The large refectory table in this spacecc dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The Fletcher’s Lea is a modern addition to the estate and features a decking area, which overlooks the beautiful River Lea. Guests can make a memorable and dramatic entrance thanks to the narrowboat provided. The space can host up to 200 guests for ceremonies, 160 for wedding breakfasts and 200 for evening celebrations. The stand-alone building includes all catering and bar facilities, allowing couples to have exclusive use of the space on the special day. The Riverside Suite is perfect for larger weddings and can host wedding receptions with 160 guests for formal dining and 220 for buffet-style meals.
We love...
A space that stands out at the venue is The Island, which is located in the middle of the river and provides the ideal space for musical events. Guests can access this space by two small bridges that cross an inlet of water that was once used to bring supplies to the monks. 19

onathan first met Cathryn at work, but it wasn’t until she left the department that they started to miss each other. They began meeting outside of work and spent a lot of time chatting in coffee shops, restaurants and going on walks. Jonathan always made Cathryn laugh as they shared a similar sense of humour. He says, “One day, I gave an impromptu proposal which Cathryn accepted. It was such a surprise that I had to ask again in the kitchen on one knee, although she’s still waiting for the ring!” The couple set the date for November 6th 2021, and created an intimate day surrounded by their nearest and dearest.
SETTING THE SCENE When it came to finding the perfect setting for their special day, the couple first visited Fanhams Hall in Ware and fell in love with the spaces. Jonathan says, “We felt connected to the property, and everything about it just felt right.” From the time of booking the venue to the actual wedding, the couple had five weeks to plan their big day and opted for a simple and classic theme. For the wedding breakfast aach table featured balloon centrepieces in ivory, pearl and white shades, which matched the bows on the back of the chairs. There was a floral centrepiece on the registrar’s table, which tied in with the floral cake topper and bouquet with autumn yellows and cream flowers. Place names and table numbers were created using card and green olive leaves to match the overall colour scheme. The two-tiered cake looked delicious with white icing and a green ribbons to make the design pop.
LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding her dream dress, the bride wanted a simple and elegant look with a vintage and fun style. Cathryn opted for a cream floorlength gown with two thin straps – it was a perfect style. She accessorised her look with an autumnal russet, sparkly cream shoes, a gold threaded wrap and long silver and gold twisted earrings. After getting ready on the special day, the bride was glowing inside and out, and the groom looked dapper in a black tuxedo with a matching waistcoat, bow tie, art-deco styled cufflinks and black leather shoes.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS To keep guests entertained, the couple’s close friend created a playlist to cater for all ages from four to 84. There were several tracks selected from each decade to appeal to everyone. The lovebirds received many positive comments about how much their loved ones enjoyed the music. The couple felt so overwhelmed with love, warmth, and happiness throughout their special day. The groom says, “The day was made even more important and magical because we could share it with our close family. It was a perfect day for us, which was full of fun and laughter.” The bride says, “Seeing Jonathan at the end of the aisle waiting with a big smile on his face made all my nerves go away.” A special moment for the pair was hearing the readings
27
during the ceremony and seeing how emotionally involved everybody was. A funny moment from the day was when the registrar announced the couple as Mr and Mrs but with Cathryn’s maiden name rather than their new married name, which made everyone laugh. Another memorable moment was one of the children being caught on camera attempting to sample the icing on the cake before it was cut! A special touch for the couple was matching rings designed and made by Chapter 79. The groom says, “The rings were based on an existing piece that I’d had for many years. We ordered them in November 2020 with no idea of when we would get married, but it was great to have them when we finally found a venue and only had five weeks to arrange everything.
MINIMOON On the night of the wedding, the newlyweds and the groom’s family stayed at the property, enabling everyone to enjoy the evening even more without worrying about travelling home. After the special day, the couple had a minimoon at the Belton Woods Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort in Lincolnshire and had a relaxed time full of pampering. 28

oe and Rebecka first met at secondary school and had known each other for more than five years before they became a couple. Rebecka says, “We both studied drama and worked in a small theatre group together at sixth form, where we got to know each other better.” She continues, “We discovered our shared sense of humour and similar interests in films, sports and music.” Their friendship blossomed into a relationship from there. During a trip to Iceland in January 2020, the couple explored Reykjavík and ended up at the Sun Voyager sculpture on the edge of the sea. Here Joe took a photo of Rebecka facing the water, and dropped to one knee once she turned back around. She says, “I had no idea it was coming! In hindsight, I should have realised as he wouldn’t let me get something out of his backpack earlier that day on the plane. We told our friends and family and then spent the rest of the day celebrating around the city.” Here Rebecka shares details about their special day... 33

We wanted the bouquets not to be overly structured and opted for a loose style with a mixture of white and blush pink/mauve flowers with lots of eucalyptus. 34
The venue’s glamping option sold it for us; we got so excited thinking about having our guests staying with us in the glamping tents.
We incorporated circles into our table plan and centrepieces, which featured silver hoops that our florists wrapped flowers around. We then had rose gold and silver mirrored table numbers.

REAL WEDDINGS
True love Lucy and Billy’s rustic-themed wedding featured a blush colour scheme Images courtesy of Martin Bou Mansour Wedding Photography
L
ucy and Billy first met in 2011 through mutual friends and clicked straight away. “I heard how sweet Billy was and wanted to give a nice guy a chance for a change – the rest is history”, says Lucy. Billy popped the question back in 2017 during a trip to Barcelona, the first trip together after having their second son a year prior. Lucy comments, “After six years together, two
houses, two kids and a dog, he finally plucked up the courage and put a ring on it!” She adds, “He’d been carrying the ring around with him all day and had planned to propose at Bunkers del Carmel, but there were too many people around. He chickened out and settled for the terrace of our hotel; it was a special moment and I was completely surprised.” Here Lucy shares details about their special day...
39
My amazing hair and make-up team were both so lovely and accommodating – they made us all feel so beautiful!
Our eldest son handing over the rings during the ceremony was one of our proudest moments.
I arrived at the venue in a Rolls-Royce Ghost with my bridesmaids and mum following behind in a Mercedes-Benz S-Clas.
Unfortunately our original venue flooded before our wedding. But we managed to find The Barn at Brook End Green Farm, a hidden gem that we knew was perfect.
The day flew by like we expected, especially with having such a late ceremony, but it was honestly one of the best days of our lives – we wish we could do it all over again!
Around the venue we had fairylights, a champagne ladder, a rustic sweet cart, light-up letters and a copper arch.
40
REAL WEDDINGS
I hate having my pictures taken and being the centre of attention, but I felt like an actual princess for the first time – everything was just perfect! We had graze boxes after the ceremony and a burger van in the evening to keep guests from going hungry. We had two floral displays at the front of the barn, a garland for the registrar table and some pamper grass around our copper arch display. Our florist did a fantastic job – nothing was ever too much trouble.
Our lovely florist provided a selection of candles, vases and flowers on logs for the centrepieces.
The groomsmen, our dads and the page boys all wore grey tailcoats with pink cravats to match the groom. Billy wore a cream waistcoat to stand out from the others.
As soon as I tried a Stella York dress, I knew it was the one and accessorised my look with jewellery gifted from Billy and a friend. 41
My bridesmaids wore maxi dresses with lace details to match my dress, and the flowergirls wore ivory dresses.
Our photo booth was a hit with guests, and we provided keyrings that people could take away with a picture. The barn was stunning, and the photo opportunities at the property were endless.
We had a threetiered buttercream cake with lemon, chocolate and Bakewell flavours.
After postponing our wedding a whole year due to Covid-19 restrictions, we were so grateful to be able to have our day surrounded by our nearest and dearest.
Our guests loved our magician, who was fantastic and kept everyone entertained. We also had a singer, which everyone enjoyed.

FULL BLAST
There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. What’s more, fine hair in particular comes with its own challenges as it can’t hang on to the added body boost. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

HERE COMES THE SUN
We all know that too much sun is damaging to the skin, so to ensure yours is on point for W-day it’s important to protect it. Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. A rinse-free gel it whisks away both waterproof and long-wearing formulas as well as dirt, excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin of essential moisture. DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! ASK THE EXPERTS
TOP TRENDS What type of bridal make-up is likely to be trending in 2022? Glowy skin has been a huge trend in 2022; the look is created using less make-up and less matt products. We specialise in HD airbrush make-up, which allows our brides to achieve as little or as much coverage as desired without the make-up looking cakey or heavy on the skin. Applying products this way creates a lightweight look that’s comfortable to wear all day. I like to add a glow to the skin using an illuminating primer underneath the foundation, and then I add highlighter to the high points of the face after the base has been applied. Use a medium-sized blending brush to the tops of the cheekbones, brow bone and the centre of the face. I also like to add some of the product onto my clients’ shoulders and collar bones. Another trend that has made a huge comeback in 2022 is the glossy lips – gone are the sticky, gloopy glosses from the noughties. There are so many gorgeous, lightweight and smooth lip gloss formulas today, from luxe brands to the high street. I particularly love the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre in Seduction and the Nars Afterglow Lip Balms. Michelle Perkins | Make-up Artistry London | www.makeupartistrylondon.com

Q&A Look your big-day best with top expert advice
SMOOTH OPERATOR What is the most effective way to reduce frizz? To reduce frizz, start by washing your hair with cold water to get that ultimate sleek look (not advised on a winter’s day) and use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to create a natural shine. When removing the excess water, try patting your hair dry using a microfibre hair towel, which is far less damaging than a normal one. Do not twist your hair in a towel and throw it over your head. Yes, it gives us that instant facelift and Audrey Hepburn look, but your frizzy locks won’t love it. Before blow drying your hair, apply a small amount of an anti-frizz serum and a heat protector oil evenly throughout your hair to protected your locks and add softness. The next step is often where we can go wrong as too much heat can cause fizz. So lower the temperature on your hair dryer and make sure you use the correct brush. If your hair is curly, a round bristle brush can tame your mane and leave you with a soft frizz-free wave, while a paddle brush will help smoothen out frizz for those with straight hair. Finishing products are essential; I love to use a shine spray with a pea-sized amount of Moroccan oil on the ends of your locks. To help your hair stay frizz-free for longer, get those split ends trimmed and use a weekly intense moisturising hair mask. Also, braid your hair before bed and treat yourself to a silk pillowcase. EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas A PASSION FOR FASHION
My mum’s looking for a stylish outfit to wear at my upcoming wedding, and I’d love something that ties in with our rustic theme. Do you have any suggestions? There are no hard and fast rules for weddings at the moment. Some people are going very relaxed while others want something more formal – it’s important to find an outfit that you’re comfortable in. This look from Veni Infantino Invitations range works with rustic colours and is a very stylish dress that matches different colour schemes. Cream of Royston has an extensive stock on two floors, including dresses suitable for woodland weddings, black tie events, formal dresses and jackets from Condici and Ispirato. Occasions for Less is our sister brand, which offers end of season lines, so there’s something for all budgets. Sue Ross | Cream of Royston | www.creamfashions.com
SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS We’re currently planning our big day and we’ve decided against a traditional cake. Do you have any alternative suggestions? Traditional wedding cakes typically mean white or ivory tiered bakes adorned with pastel-coloured blooms, usually roses or peonies. If you mention an alternative cake design to me, my mind goes into overdrive as there’s so much you can do. Think about using bold colours such as black, blues, reds, yellows and purples. You can play around with textures and have a concrete, bark or wafer paper design. Why not consider having a square or rectangular-shaped tiers to create a showstopping design? You could even have structured or carved cake in the shape of an animal, suitcase, bag, castle and more. Add statement blooms such as flowers, poppies, anthuriums, protea and large roses with plenty of foliage for those flower lovers. Your cake should reflect your personality and interests – the list is endless! Lynda Trembling | Sculpt & Bloom www.sculptandbloom.co.uk 73
PLANNING SOS
www.babbphoto.com
We’ve started planning our wedding; what advice can you share to make the process easier? There are 100s of resources these days to help you find wedding ideas, from magazines and publications to online blogs, social media, wedding directories and more. Some weddings all look the same and follow similar templates. So, you’ll want to create a wedding that includes personal touches that truly represent your great relationship – remember there are no rules. It’s difficult when those around you seem to want to dampen your fabulous ideas because everyone suddenly seems to have an opinion on the day and make comments such as ‘I wouldn’t do that if I were you’ or ‘how about XYZ instead’. Respond with a gentle ‘thanks, but that doesn’t fit with our vision’ or perhaps ‘really appreciate you thinking of us, but we have already sorted this out’. If they continue to interfere, put them on an information diet and stop telling them details about the day. When it comes to creating the perfect wedding, your suppliers also need to fit your vision. That way you’ll know they have your corner and will help boost your confidence. Consider joining online communities and Facebook groups filled with other couples ditching wedding trends. These communities offer a wealth of inspiration, information and support. Finally, consider getting a wedding planner who will be more than the administrator, contract checker and coordinator of the day – they’ll also be your confidante. Beckie Melvin | Emerald Orchid Weddings https://emeraldorchidweddings.co.uk
THE GREAT OUTDOORS We’re planning to have an outdoor celebration, but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas? Making use of all the beautiful outdoor spaces in the warm summer months is so lovely and what many couples want. Outdoor celebrations are fantastic, but we have to be realistic in the UK and have a plan B as the weather can be so unpredictable. Once you find a venue, look at the spaces and see if there’s an option to have a stunning glass marquee or a stretch tent so your guest still feel like they’re outside in the elements. As a wedding stylist and planner, I help my couples think about how they can add personality to their celebration with colours, floral designs and décor among many other important details. My favourite idea is creating interesting areas that bring the indoors out; my couples and their guest also love this as it creates spaces for people to relax – especially as it can be a long day. It also provides interesting areas for your guest to explore and is a great way to bring your personality and style together. Tichea Brade | Carmela Wedding’s & Event’s www.carmelaweddings.co.uk

What are the latest flower trends for weddings? Bold shades and colour blocking have made a comeback this year. Pastels and blush shades will always be popular, but couples are getting braver and bolder in their colour choices – fun is the name of the game. Monochromatic bouquets always look beautiful; imagine a colour scheme focusing on reds with different tints and tones. Alternatively, a bouquet of polychromatic flowers with lots of varieties of blooms and textures with grasses and foliage will create the perfect pieces. Sustainability is very much high on our agenda. As a florist, I’m trying to educate my couples by suggesting biodegradable floral foam alternatives, such as using moss soaked in water and chicken wire as the base for floral arrangements. You can also repurpose arrangements from the ceremony to the reception to get total value for jaw-dropping designs. I suggest reusing and recycling the plastic dishes, trays, and glass vases as well as using the moss or wire for garden projects or even returning the items to be used at other weddings – every little bit we do helps! hen it comes to a wedding day, whether you’re the bride or a guest, the million dollar question for everyone is: what am I going to wear? For the bride and groom, as they are the stars of the show, it’s likely that they have at least an idea of what their big-day look will be like. But for the rest of the bridal party, where do you begin? First and foremost, the venue setting and theme of the day is paramount. A long flowing gown for bridesmaids will look out of place in a field for a tipi wedding; similarly, the mother-of-the-bride in a tropical print, summer dress may standout against a stately home wedding with a Bridgerton-inspired theme. Another thing to consider is the weather, us British folk like to moan about it and rightly so, because how many sunny days do we actually have each year? The season and the inclement weather will dictate the colour palette – no one wears pastel yellows in winter – but also your accessory choice. Boleros, jackets and wraps will be your cosy friend for winter “I dos”. Read on, to find out more about on-trend fashion choices for 2022 weddings.
#SQUADGOALS As much as we all love our friendship groups dearly, there’s a lot of personalities grouped together. The same goes for fashion styles; we all have bits we love about our bodies and bits we don’t. The best thing a wedding couple can do to make their bridal and groom’s party happy, is to be relaxed and openminded about the outfits you want them to wear – everyone will then be happy and enjoy the day! Top trends for maids in 2022 to be inspired by are: ♥ The romance for retro. The ‘90s are back, more so the satin slip dress. Although it may not be for every bodyshape, it’s romantic, elegant, comes in a variety of colours, and is ontrend: satin, spaghetti straps, square necklines – check! ♥ Royal approval. With our love of Bridgerton and period dramas still going strong, Victorian-style ruffles and layers can certainly look the part on a modern silhouetteon the shoulders, waterfall skirts, hems and across the body – its super flattering too! ♥ Technicolour dreamboat. Gone are the days where all the bridesmaids are in one dress colour and style. The mix and match look is here to stay, and this as evolved in to not just colour palettes such as all wearing various shade of blue, but also textures. Your bridal party will look gorgeous in a mix of satin, velvet and sequins – and so will your wedding pictures! ♥ Colour swatch. Undecided on your colour scheme? Be inspired by these trending bridesmaid dress tones: neutral tones, nude skin shades, black, white and earth tones – venue styling matching these will complete a cohesive look across the day. ♥ Standout from the crowd. If you’re bride squad encompasses a bridesman, or sometimes people just don’t like wearing dresses, then why not match the maids in style or colour but opt for a velvet dinner suit jacket, tuxedo or rock a jumpsuit? 76

DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY FINISHING TOUCHES Once your nearest and dearest find their perfect dress, the next task is finding dream-worthy accessories. With so many pieces on the market, the search can become overwhelming with the amount of options and styles available. We’ve asked two jewellers to share advice to make the process easier.
SARAH COLLEY | BAKER BROTHERS The best part of putting an outfit together is choosing the right jewellery to go along with it; wedding attire is no different. Some brides prefer to choose their bridesmaid accessories, while others allow free rein. Either way, it’s essential to understand how the jewellery and dress can work perfectly together. A necklace can finish a bridesmaid outfit perfectly, and it also acts as a memento for your special day. When choosing style, always consider the neckline of the gowns. A strapless or sweetheart neckline can be complemented with a dropstyle pendant; an elegant pearl, a solitaire diamond or gemstone. You could even consider layering delicate chains in mixed metals for a more contemporary look. The classic spaghetti-strap dress with a square neckline can be paired beautifully with a string of pearls, while an off-theshoulder or Bardot neckline can look stunning with a more statement piece and coordinated earrings. Think about the colour of your bridesmaids’ dresses. Silver or white metals pair better with lighter pastels, while rose or yellow gold goes better with warmer tones. Consider hairstyles as an up-do gives more leeway for statement, drop earrings. Or perhaps their hair is being worn down; in that case, it would be better to opt for demure studs or pearl earrings. Check out: www.bakerbrothersdiamonds.com
SARAH HEULWEN | LEWIS HEULWEN LEWIS BESPOKE From when we were little, we all imagined how our big day would be from the white dress, crisp suits, colour schemes, gorgeous flower arrangements and the perfect wedding venue. Whether you’re a big-day dreamer or not, the attention to detail when planning your wedding makes all the difference. Jewellery can sometimes be the forgotten finishing touch; a classic gemstone and diamond pendant would work well with any dress and any budget. It can complement your colour scheme and even individual personalities. Going bespoke for each pendant allows you to choose the diamond or gemstone that reflects your bridesmaids and the big day. Your best girls will have been there throughout the planning experience, so what better way to say thank you than by giving them a gift that they can cherish not just for the day, but also for a lifetime. SUITED AND BOOTED Grooms and groomsmen, and the fathers of the newlyweds too, are certainly taking more pride in their wedding appearance and enjoying the shopping just as much as the leading ladies. Men’s fashion has come a long way in the last decade, as has the more accepting protocols of wedding traditions. Some of our favourite grooms’ looks here at Your Herts and Beds Wedding, are those gents rocking their long beards and tattoos, in a pink waistcoat with patterned shirt – it’s totally unique and individual. If you want to keep it classic with a three-piece tail suit and top hat, then that’s your prerogative, but if you loved the model on the latest GQ Magazine, or Daniel Craig’s look at the latest James Bond premier – Daniel brought velvet back! Grooms and their support act can put their best foot forward in these trending styles. If you’ve never had a professional fitted suit, your wedding day is the occasion to have a bespoke tailored look. The perfect fit is essential for comfort, the wedding photos, and you can have little personalised elements added such as your initials and wedding date stitched in to the lining. Catwalk looks: yes, few people look like a Gucci model, but if you like the patterned shirt from the SS22 collection then encompass this into the look – you need to feel like you! Earth tones that are key for bridesmaids and venue styling will also be a trend for the men on the day too. Think sand tones, beige and browns. For something a little fresher like a green palette. Grooms who still adore the traditional tuxedo can go for it, but think about variations maybe velvet (aka Bond-style) or a bright colour, or patterned effect. Make your personality stand out with your accessory choices – here’s where you can really get creative; a dashing waistcoat, funky watch, or artsy pocket square and braces.

TOP TIPS: ♥ In the case of a large and luxurious wedding, it is better to opt for a tuxedo or tailcoat. ♥ A rustic wedding style allows one to put on a country-style outfit – a vest, no tie, moccasins, straw hats, etc. ♥ Whichever style, the groom’s suit is simply obliged to fit perfectly on the figure. If it’s made to order, a good tailor will take care of it anyway. If it is bought in a store, it’s worth contacting a workshop and adjusting it if there are any shortcomings. ♥ For slender figures of short and medium height, fitted jackets with narrowed trousers can be a good option, and for denser and taller men, a straight cut is suitable. ♥ In the summer, opt for a light colour and fabric such as silk, satin, cotton, and linen. For winter thing wool, corduroy, velvet or corduroy in dark shades look great! ♥ Whatever the groomsmen outfit may be, it must be in harmony with the bride’s/groom’s look. ♥ Classic Oxford or Derby shoes are a go-to choice for footwear – make sure they are comfortable! ♥ Take your pick of accessories: tie and tie clip, bow tie, scarf, pocket square, cufflinks, ring, bracelet, watch, necklace, pocket watch, hanky, belt and buttonhole. ♥ Having a bestwoman? All the above trends and tips apply to their attire too. Work with them to see what they want to wear, and choose it together – perhaps keep a cohesive feature like the colour! 80

DRESSING THE BRIDAL PARTY
MUM’S THE WORD The mothers-of-the-bride and groom are going to feel under the spotlight along with the rest of the bridal party. This added pressure can feel overwhelming as they may feel a lot older than the bridesmaids and possibly wouldn’t have worn occasionwear for many years. These factors can certainly put the strain on what should be an enjoyable experience. As the bride, try to make them feel as reassured as possible and offer support and advice. As with everyone else on the day, they too should feel comfortable and themselves leading to a happy and confident mother! Firstly, sophistication is key, but this doesn’t mean frumpy! If you love your clothes, then go for a bold colour or striking a pattern. Keep it demure by avoiding low cut necklines or short hem so you can look back on the photos for years to come with no regrets. For many women, no matter their age, we all seem to hate our upper arms. Experimenting with three-quarter-length sleeves, coverups and jackets will keep you feeling confident and can add variety to your look – it’s also perfect for winter weddings! Accessories are your best friend when it comes to wedding outfits, you can really finish off a look with a fancy hat or fascinator, and a simple dress can be jazzed up with jewellery and a bright handbag. Many modern mums are opting to leave traditional hats at home in favour of something a little smaller, such as a fascinator, a statement flower in the hair or stunning hair accessories. The key is to complement the rest of the bridal party and not to compete with it; so be aware of colour palettes, themes and what the rest of the bridal party is wearing. Lastly, not only should you look a million dollars but you should feel it inside and out, that’s having a confidence in who you are. Also make sure what you’re wearing is comfortable, is the hat the right fit, will it make you itchy and hot, are your shoes the best size and the right material? You’ll be on your feet for a large part of the day. Make sure your dress is comfortable when you’re sat down, is it cutting in your hips at the table and can you breathe properly? TRADITIONAL GO-TO FAVOURITES AND MODERN TRENDS FOR MUMS. ♥ Tiered skirts can create a textured effect to a silhouette and excite a plainer style. ♥ All over patterns hide a multitude of sins. ♥ Be inspired by style icon Grace Kelly, think tie-front jackets and flattering cowl scoop necklines. ♥ A shift dress with light overlays is feminine and flattering. ♥ Go for green shades in 2022! ♥ If you’re not comfortable in a dress, a trouser suit is the way to go. ♥ Separates are a woman’s best friend, comfortable because you can go for a different sized top and bottom, and you can mix and match colours and patterns.

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.
READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a
videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:
VENUE
CATERING
❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.
❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.
PHOTOGRAPHER
JEWELLERY
❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.
❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.
ALTERNATIONS
CAKE
❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 89

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

Dimos Stasinopoulos, the CEO and founder of Epoque Collection, tells us: “We’re beyond excited to have an active role in the creation of the first Nobu Hotel and Restaurant in Greece, on the island of Santorini. Our cooperation with MonteRock International, a group with an international presence in the business and hospitality sector, guarantees that this project carves a new path in the way boutique hotels are perceived domestically. Hotels will not only be singled out due to brand’s name but also for its design, location, landscape, and service.” Check out www.nobuhotels.com for more information.

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination
A
fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to
the forest
Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway
E
xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.
TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.
Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
