our Kent Wedding is 100 and doesn’t it look great for it’s age? That’s right, about to enter our 18th year of publishing, we’re celebrating our 100th issue! I’ve been the editor of this wonderful title since issue 80 and feel incredibly proud to have been part of its history. The first issue hit the shelves in 2005 with the iconic Kentish landmark, Leeds Castle on the cover and boy have things changed since then! I managed to find a copy in the archives and dusted it off to find that fashions had more in common with the 1990s than they do the 2020s. Designs were all about taffeta, boned bodices and bags of embellishment. Words I hardly hear these days in relation to wedding dresses. What’s more, it was rare indeed to see a groom not sporting a cravat. However, some things don’t change. Editor Demelza, was explaining to couples that it’s a good idea to select wedding blooms in season at the time of your big day. She said, “In their natural season, flowers are physically stronger (and therefore longer-lasting), their scent is more potent, and their abundance will ensure they don’t cost the earth.” Sound advice and true as it ever was. Themed weddings were as big 17 years ago too. On the news pages, we reported that a couple who tied the knot at The Hop Farm were keen ghost hunters and pulled up to the venue in a dray decorated in witches and ghosts, accompanied by two skeletons and a driver dressed as the grim reaper. So, although personality-filled weddings are huge today, they certainly weren’t something the early noughties couple was afraid of. Plus, Allington Castle featured in our venues focus in issue one, and it makes an appearance here again in issue 100 as the location for our fantastic Disney Fairy Tale Collection shoot. Your Kent Wedding has been bringing local wedding content to lovely nearlyweds for the best part of two decades, becoming a much valued go-to source of inspiration and advice for many tying the knot in this gorgeous county. We exist to champion the local and very much hope that we can continue to do so for many moons to come. We’d never have reached this ripe old age (still looking so good) without our lovely readers and the county’s amazing suppliers who’ve supported us all these years. A huge thank you to you all. Here’s to the next 100 issues! And as ever, keeeep planning!

NEW VENUE ALERT

Chapel House Estate in Thanet, East Kent, once a private family home, has been redesigned as an exclusive-use luxury wedding venue due to open in the spring. The Estate blends seamlessly into the surrounding Kentish farmland, less than a mile from the picturesque coast. The reinstated north drive will provide the main access via a private, gated entrance and the team will greet guests at reception where they’ll be able to check in to their accommodation before heading off to explore. Offering a limited number of exclusive, destination weekend and intimate weekday weddings, Chapel House will provide a memorable experience for couples and guests alike. Just picture it: as part of the private stay on the eve of the wedding, you and your immediate guests will be served drinks in the courtyard before enjoying supper together from one of the seasonally designed menus, showcasing the very best of Kentish produce for an inclusive vegan, vegetarian dining experience at the chef’s table. The Estate offers varied opportunities for the wedding ceremony itself, including the Wild Apple Orchard and the Walled Courtyard, which can seat up to 60 guests, while the former is large enough for 120. The Old Malt Granary is licensed for indoor weddings. A banqueting barn is being built next to it, a few steps from the ceremony to the drinks reception and wedding breakfast. For those wishing to take advantage of more intimate “I dos,” Chapel House’s vaulted receiving room is licensed for 15 people. Chapel House itself is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1290, and is the centrepiece of the Estate. It now provides a beautifully styled master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, complemented by a dressing room with bathroom and two attic bedrooms also with en suites. A large modern kitchen and two lounge areas offer the perfect spaces for entertaining. In addition, the south west paddock will house 10 private lodgings and a 24-hour on site concierge service will ensure guest needs are catered for, no matter the hour. REAL WEDDING

D

espite never hearing of any online-dating success stories, having a young son it was an easy way for Leanne to meet and chat to people in the evenings without needing to leave the house. It was here she found David and was attracted to his handsome and kind face. “I thought I had nothing to lose by sending him the first message, and here we are eight years later,” Leanne tells us. David proposed in 2018, at home with their three children. “David is quite shy and doesn’t like a lot of attention on him, so the idea of proposing in a public place filled him with dread,” Leanne explains. So, he chose one Sunday in October, while Leanne was in her element, using her new carpet cleaner! She remembers, “From the doorway, David asked to speak to me and I shouted at him to get off the carpet as it was still wet. I turned around to moan at him some more and found him on one knee with a small box and a diamond sparkling at me. I immediately burst into tears and asked if he was winding me up!” Read on as Leanne tells us all about the big day at Broome Park Hotel on 21st August, 2021...

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION The couple were on the lookout for an exclusive-use venue with impact. They wanted to wow their guests with a spectacular backdrop for their dream wedding. Also on their checklist was somewhere with enough rooms to stay in as they would have guests coming from all over including Scotland and the U.S. “I stumbled across Broome Park on my 1,000th search of venues in the South and booked an appointment,” Leanne remembers. “I remember driving through the woodland before turning a corner and – WOW! There it was. It gave me goose bumps every time we went there and always will. It’s truly the most beautiful venue I’ve ever visited. The main house makes such a statement and the grounds are stunning,” she continues.

SETTING THE SCENE Leanne dreamed of getting married since she was little and had always imagined a big white wedding filled with sparkle and touches of her favourite colour, pink. “I’m incredibly girly, so I wanted glamour and pretty combined,” she explains. To complement the dream theme the bride chose pink roses for her bouquet. And as she was keen for the palette to flow seamlessly through the styling, the table numbers, place names and table plan were all designed to match the invitations – pink, sparkly and super-pretty. The vision for the big-day bake was: showstopping. The pair enlisted the services of a very talented cake maker who designed five tiers of pink and sparkle. “It was so beautiful, I was gutted to cut it, but it tasted yummy,” Leanne recalls. Thoughtful finishing touches included confetti cones, flip flops for the evening, a toiletries table complete with deodorant, plasters, paracetamol and hair spray, all of which were very well received by guests. The newlyweds also treated their loved ones to a sweetie table, and other decorative elements featured a gift table with memory tree to honour lost loved ones. Plus, a light-up LOVE sign filled with pale pink and white flowers made for a great backdrop to impromptu snaps and selfies.

LOOKING THE PART Leanne chose to wear Cherie by Ronald Joyce – a princess-style ball gown, sparkly from head to toe, with a dipped back. She says, “My mum sewed two petticoats together as I didn’t feel it was big enough, so I ended up with about 24 layers on the day!” She completed the look with glittery Jimmy Choos and a cathedral-length, two-tiered veil adorned in gems, plus a tiara. David wore a navy two-piece suit with a grey waistcoat, white cravat and white pocket square. His buttonhole was a white rose with a thistle to honour his late dad. The groomsmen were all dressed in the same navy suits and waistcoats, but accessorised with pink cravats and pocket squares with a single pink rose buttonhole each. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in pale pink, full-length, chiffon dresses with a small train.

TIME TO CELEBRATE All assembled were entertained by a DJ in the evening and the bride was on the dancefloor all night! She’d been worried in the lead up that they might not be able to have dancing due to Covid restrictions so was understandably elated when the rules were eased. There was also a white bouncy castle, which the children loved, but was an even bigger hit with the adults after a few glasses of bubbly! A sparkle station stocked with hair and face glitter, light-up flower crowns and glow sticks made for a the most glammed-up guests you’re likely to find, not to mention a super-fun dancefloor. What’s more, the photo booth added to the festivities and the couple loved the fact that they got a copy of each photo in a guest book to keep.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Leanne shares: “Since the wedding was postponed from the year before due to the pandemic, I was incredibly stressed in the run up, fearful that it would be cancelled again. David was much more chilled though, and had faith it would happen this time. When the big day finally arrvied I was so relieved and just tried to take in every moment, but when the make-up artist and hair stylist arrived I felt overcome with nerves and emotions. “We’d planned an outdoor ceremony in the Italian gardens, but it began to rain about an hour before. Neither of us cared though, we just wanted to get married. The big doors opening to the ceremony room and seeing David standing at the end of the aisle is a memory I’ll never forget – it was magical. Everyone else in the room seemed to fade away and all I could see was him. The day went by in a blur. Everyone says is goes so fast, but you don’t realise how true that is. Each and every supplier, every family member, every friend, our bridesmaids, our best men, our children and our wonderful parents all added to the most perfect day.”

THE BRIDE’S WORDS OF WISDOM “My top tip is to search for suppliers local to the venue. Also, find a photographer whose photos you fall in love with, someone you feel comfortable around, and can laugh and joke with. The photos are all you have in years to come and you’re so busy on the day, you miss parts. A fantastic photographer will capture all those moments for you.”

The best moments in life are the ones we least expect! Choosing the right videographer is a key decision when planning your wedding and I believe you should, firstly, lean towards a style of videography that makes you stop in your tracks and secondly, find someone you feel comfortable working with. I’m a sociable guy and like to keep things fun and less staged so that the work I produce is more natural. My main goal as a videographer is to use my talent to showcase the raw emotion behind each event in an artistic and appealing way. I have a huge passion for capturing the love and emotion that only a wedding day can bring out of us all. I love working with fun and down to earth couples who want to let the day unfold as it was meant to, authentic and totally you. As a wedding videographer I am also a qualified drone pilot, which will allow me to capture your wedding day not just from the ground but from the air too. With my experience and the positive feedback I’ve received from past work, I’m confident that I’ll do an excellent job covering your special day.

REAL WEDDING

YOU SHALL GO TO

Alex and Mike styled their big day with an industrial chic edge Images courtesy of Nicky’s Photography

A

lthough Alex and Mike attended the same secondary school for six years, their paths hadn’t crossed. However, they did share some mutual friends and eight years later they recognised one another while on a night out at the local pub. “The rest is history,” Alex says. In 2018 Mike’s Christmas present to Alex was a New Year trip to Vienna and the Silvester Gala. The evening of the event, seated on a table with strangers from all around the world, the pair got talking about their relationship and one of other couples joked that Mike should propose that night. Little did Alex know that as she patted down his jacket in a humorous response, there actually was an engagement ring in his pocket! As the clock ticked closer to midnight, Mike disappeared making the excuse that he was going to request a Stormzy track, which was odd considering the classical playlist they’d been entertained with thus far. Next thing Alex knew, there was Mike, microphone in hand on the stage in front of 400 other guests asking

her to marry him. “I was so surprised, but looking back it probably had been glaringly obvious from the moment I unwrapped the trip on Christmas morning,” Alex says. The effort Mike had gone to to make this special proposal meant even more to Alex since it had been inspired by a story her late grandmother had told him about her and Alex’s grandad taking a trip to Austria and having the best holiday of their lives. The couple set about looking for a manor-house venue with an outdoor ceremony area, a barn and somewhere for the bridal party to sleep and Solton Manor fit the bill. When Alex found it online, it had just reopened with new owners and Alex says, “The work they were doing to improve it left us with no question it was the venue for us.” So, the date was set for June 2020, but thanks to the pandemic the big day finally happened in August 2021. Here, the bride tells us more about the happy occasion... 45

As the barn has an open industrial roof we decided to run with an urban/ industrial theme, so a lot of our props were made from copper pipe. This influenced the décor further and we opted for personalised copper coasters with names as favours, copper hoops adorned with flowers for the centrepieces and then threw in pops of pink and blue where we could to complement that.

REAL WEDDING

barnstorming DAY A

Francais and Joe tied the knot at Odo’s Barn in August, 2021 Images courtesy of Emma Migden Photography

W

hen Francais met Joe through a mutual friend she was immediately attracted to his charm and passion for sport. Joe proposed on a private boat while on holiday in Corfu. He drove out far from shore, just the two of them, dropped anchor and popped the question. So romantic! The couple both liked the idea of a barn wedding with a laid-back vibe and discovered the beautiful Odo’s Barn in Bilsington, Ashford, which was just the place. The date was set for 21st August, 2021 and here Francais tells us more about the big day...

51

I wore Romance by Dando London

Joe was dressed in a navy three-piece suit with brown leather shoes and a dried-flower buttonhole. His groomsmen were all dressed to match and had smaller buttonholes allowing the groom to stand out.

I arrived at the venue in a classic Jaguar.

We both felt nervous but excited in the morning, but standing at the altar saying “I do” was something we’ll remember forever. 52

REAL WEDDING

The centrepieces were bottles filled with pampas grass and dried flowers, surrounded by tea lights.

For the venue, we opted purely for dried, wild flowers with natural greens and neutral hues.

For our wedding breakfast we enjoyed a starter of Spanish and Italian charcuterie and tapas, followed by paella and patatas bravas for main course. We finished the meal with a trio of desserts.

Charlotte from Odo’s Barn was wonderful. Nothing was too much bother and she was so helpful and friendly. 53

Our live band Rudy Warman and The Heavy Weather played outside beneath the festival willow tree, which was decked out in colourful ribbon. A DJ entertained our guests in the evening. We went to Careys Manor Hotel & SenSpa in Brockenhurst for a two-night mini-moon. Then to Malta for five-nights, which Joe’s mother booked for us. We enjoyed every second of it!

My bridesmaids wore burnt orange maxi dresses with ruched bodices. They finished the look with gold heels. Our first dance was a real highlight of the day for us.

REAL WEDDINGS

IN LOVE

Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve was an idyllic backdrop Stephanie and Andrew’s nuptials Images courtesy of Jeff Oliver Photography

S

teph and Andy didn’t meet in a particularly romantic fashion, it was in the town of Cheshunt over spreadsheets and bar charts! “We worked as analysts for a national retailer,” laughs Steph. “But we were instantly attracted to each other due to our similar sense of humour.” Andy popped the question at the couple’s favourite hotel – thanks to its 30,000 bottle wine cellar – The Vineyard. “Andy (unsuspiciously) had cleared a large space on the balcony and was pacing nervously when the pre-dinner champagne was fiveminutes late,” recalls Steph. “I cried loads, and am not actually sure I ever said ‘yes!’ It was supposed to a be a surprise, but it wasn’t really as he’s not very good at keeping a secret.” The big date was set, for 20th August 2021, with Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve setting the scene and the couple opting for a colour scheme of grey and jewel tones...

57

Our favours were personalised shot glasses with an initial on them used for our limoncello toast (we love Italy). While the place names were geodes in our jewel tones.

We’re both big animal lovers and wanted to incorporate this into our wedding. Port Lympne is run by the Aspinall Foundation, which is dedicated to animal conservation. So, tying the knot here gave us the chance to support animal welfare, with the added bonus of a safari on the big day! Tables were named after ecosystems and were decorated with animals that live in the respective regions, spray-painted silver. They sat on top of a moss runner with candles.

Our tableplan was a map with animals on it.

We wanted the flowers to feel wild and natural, as though they’d grown in place. The main ceremony decoration was a moon arch with flowers to line the aisle, which were moved for the wedding breakfast. I had two requests for my bouquet: to include a king protea as the main flower, as it’s the national flower of South Africa where our honeymoon was supposed to be; and to include some sweetpeas to represent April, the month our greyhound Bjorn, was born and died. The rest we left up to our florist based on jewel tones with lots of greenery. She did an amazing job, I was stunned walking down the aisle.

58

REAL WEDDINGS

We had an afternoon tea for our main meal, which was super-relaxed. We then had food trucks for the rest of the day allowing guests to help themselves whenever they were hungry. Options included a taxi serving pizza and hot dogs, and a cocktail van.

“I loved my dress, but it was very heavy and hot for a summer wedding, since it was chosen for our original autumn wedding date. I’d advise brides to take this into account and have a back up for the evening.”

Instead of a cake we had a chocolate sculpture filled with truffles that we smashed, including chocolate tigers. It was so much fun. My dress, by Justin Alexander, featured vintage beading and Chantilly lace, which I loved. It felt very romantic yet dramatic thanks to the sparkles. I was super-lucky to fit into the sample that the shop was selling that day!

Andy’s dad runs a suit shop, Aults of Bolton, and very kindly gifted Andy a suit and provided the rest of the groomsman with theirs. Andy chose a navy suit, with a silver-grey waistcoat as a nice contrast to the rest of the group.

The bridesmaids wore grey dresses with touches of sparkle and different necklines. 59

My top tip is to hire an on-the-day wedding co-ordinator. Laura handled everything from the month beforehand, putting together a detailed plan and timetable for our suppliers, as well as being their main point of contact on the day. This took a lot of the pressure away from me and meant I could relax knowing everything was in the hands of an expert.

I felt a bit overwhelmed when the day finally arrived after Covid delays. I think my brain stopped being able to process memories past mid-morning as so much was going on! We were just so happy to be celebrating with all our friends and family at last, and to leave the stress of wedding planning during a pandemic and all the unknowns that entails behind. We wanted the wedding to be fun and provided a lot of entertainment. During the drinks reception we had mini golf, a selfie photo booth and a make-your-own flower crown station. In the evening, Swing Patrol taught us all the Charleston and we topped it all off with a face painter. Not forgetting the safari for all the guests of course! WITH THANKS My mum started a jewellery business on etsy in honour of my artist grandfather, and made the necklace I wore in the evening. Hannah at Port Lympne organised beautiful vintage tea sets to be hired as a surprise. Special thanks too to our photographers for the stunning pictures and for bearing with us so graciously, and also to our videographers for perfectly capturing the atmosphere. We got a lot of compliments on our personalised ceremony, which was the first time many of our guests had experienced one led by a celebrant. Karina did an amazing job with lots of humour. Liz and Angela who did our hair and make-up are incredibly talented – they were great fun during the morning and my look stayed in place all day. All our suppliers were amazing and so much made the day special.

We saw each other before the ceremony for a first look, which was incredibly special and emotional, even the rhinos came up to the top of the field to join us.

Walking into the wedding breakfast to cheers from our friends and family was a special moment.

We’ll never forget spending time feeding the beautiful giraffes. At the end, one decided she hadn’t had enough and tried to eat Andy’s buttonhole!

The secret of our success 100TH ANNIVERSARY

Words of wisdom from our past real wedding couples

T

“Our best advice? Marry the right person! But also, talk to each other, be honest about how you think and feel – your partner isn’t a mind reader. And when you have children, a good piece of advice: ‘your children are on loan to you, your relationship is always yours.’” – Lucy and Dan, issue 84

“You always need to work together as a team and be partners, especially as right now we’re raising two small children, which is hard work. It’s the little things that are important to show each other you care, even when times are busy. Try to spend some quality time together, just the two of you, to catch up, talk and relax without any distractions.” – Hannah and Andrew, issue 82 “Make a wedding planning memory book. It allows you to write letters to each other, alternative vows, reasons why you want to marry each other, plans for the stag and hen dos... it’s such a great thing to do and will be an incredible thing to look back on.” – Jade and Darren, issue 80

www.rebeccadouglas.co.uk

www.samanthajonesphotography.co.uk

“Our key to a successful and happy marriage is to always be there for each other, while each allowing the other their space. From time to time we plan date days where we spend a day in London together or book a hotel somewhere for a night – little, special things that we enjoy as a couple and get time just for the two of us. And the most important thing: Never forget to laugh together and enjoy your time as a couple.” – Christina and Andrew, issue 95

o celebrate Your Kent Wedding’s 100th issue we caught up with some of our past real wedding couples to ask them what it is that makes their marriage so successful. Plus, speaking from experience, who is better placed to share some words of wisdom when it comes the big day itself?

www.matildadelvesweddingphotography.com

“Make your day personal to the both of you in every detail. On the day, just go with the flow, don’t worry about anything and enjoy every moment because it’s over so fast. Also, get someone to record the speeches, as I regret that I didn’t!” – Rebecca and Alexander, issue 87

“For us, being in a successful marriage isn’t always about perfection. You have to learn how to build a marriage and that takes a lifetime. You also have to take the unsuccessful, imperfect moments, and sometimes the unhappy ones and learn how to turn them into ones where you learn to love again, appreciate each other and be thankful for having that person in your life.” – Laura and Stephen, issue 89 63

WEDDING PLANNING

PLANNING SOS www.olegssamsonovsphotography.com

Local suppliers from all specialisms share words of wisdom to get your planning off on the right foot

THE VENUE Kylie Christie, The Old Kent Barn www.theoldkentbarn.co.uk We’re engaged! Now what? Start by researching venues. Many will have lots of information on their websites as well as pricing. Pick your favourites, then arrange a tour of each to learn more about how your day will run, what’s included and what ceremony choices you have. Check availability: be prepared that your exact date may not be free, so being flexible will help in the early stages. Starting your planning with these details secured will help you organise the rest of your day. What’s the one question you get most commonly get asked and how do you respond? “What’s next after booking our venue?” A top tip is to start with the things you need, such as something to wear, rings, photography. Then the things you want – decorations, flowers, entertainment. This approach will help you prioritise your planning and budget. How can we make our big day totally ‘us’? Think about what you’d really like for you day, from colours and styles

to food, music and entertainment. You’re planning a celebration of your marriage, so your family and friends will want you both to have the most special day and be there to help you celebrate and enjoy everything you’ve planned. Choosing things you both want will make your wedding personal to you both. What’s your top planning tip when it comes to looking for and booking the venue? Ask lots of questions and don’t rush the process. It’s ok to take some time to check you’ve covered everything you need to know. Sometimes you’ll know instantly that you’ve found the perfect place for you, or you may want to really make sure you’ve explored all of your options before committing to the one. When choosing your venue it’s really good to establish what is and isn’t included, what you can and can’t do, and who will be responsible for the running of your day. From setting everything up to ensuring the day runs smoothly and tidying everything away: these are key areas you’ll appreciate knowing are in hand. If these areas aren’t covered by your venue, consider enlisting a support team or an on-the-day wedding coordinator who will run the day for you, leaving family and friends free to enjoy the occasion and you present for all of the special moments. 65

Having said that, if something feels right then be brave and take the plunge. If you plan on seeing five venues, but fall in love with the first there’s nothing wrong with being impulsive and making a choice on the spot. Allow yourself plenty of time, as lots of great venues and suppliers get booked up early – we’ve just started taking bookings for 2025. Look for suppliers that want to work with you, are flexible and give good guidance. What’s the one question you get most commonly get asked and how do you respond? We’re often asked about the provenance of our ingredients. We can proudly say that all of our suppliers are Kent based and we buy locally where possible. TH Brown, our Higham-based vegetable supplier is particularly passionate about buying from local growers and cutting down on food miles.

THE FLOWERS Tanya Henton, Stem by Stem www.stembystemflowers.co.uk We’re engaged! Now what? Get the main things booked before you book a consultation with a florist. It helps to have these elements in place when you talk flowers as the venue will guide the style and placement of floral decorations; the dress will give an indication of the size, shape, style of the bridal bouquet; and the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s attire generally reflect the palette for the wedding. What’s the one question you get asked and how do you respond? “Are peonies in season when we get married?” Everyone loves a peony, but these are only available for a short time in early summer. In this case I’d suggest going for something similar with multiple petals such as garden roses, ranunculas or something voluminous such as hydrangeas or bloom chrysanthemums. How can we make our big day totally us? Don’t be over-influenced by Instagram photo shoots as a lot of the ideas aren’t practical. For example, glass vases and candles placed on floors and stairs isn’t a good idea on health and safety grounds. And fluffy pampas grass in bouquets – do you want your groom to be covered in grass seeds as it falls to bits? Really think about what’s important to you. You want the day to reflect you and your personalities, so don’t feel you have to have a grey colour scheme if you love yellow and it makes you happy. What’s your top planning tip when it comes to the flowers? Go seasonal and sustainable. Your florist will tell you what’s best for the time of year and don’t be afraid to use twigs, leaves and grasses to add extra texture and interest. Design your floral decorations so they can be taken away easily at the end of the evening or given to a local nursing home or hospice afterwards.

66

How can we make our big day totally ‘us’? There are lots of traditions surrounding weddings, but you don’t have to follow them. A three-course meal can be swapped for a barbecue feast menu. The first dance can be changed to games followed by a family tug of war, and you can have a doughnut tower instead of a wedding cake. Be as creative as like and if you’ve chosen good suppliers they’ll bring your ideas to life. What’s your top planning tip when it comes to the catering? Have canapés or bites for your arrival or drinks reception. Wedding breakfasts are usually later than lunchtime so they’ll keep people going. Be adventurous if you want to – it’s your wedding so if you don’t want to offer chicken to everyone that’s up to you. And finally, eat the seasons. Choose a menu that showcases local ingredients, it’ll taste delicious and is better for the environment.

WEDDING PLANNING THE MOVIE Chris Wade, The Kent Video Company www.thekentvideocompany.com We’re engaged! Now what? Video production can be a daunting prospect if you’re not used to being in front of the camera, but with our experience, we aim to streamline the process to make it as easy to understand as possible. It all starts with a conversation where we answer as many of your questions as possible during our initial meeting, as well as ask a number of our own. What’s the one question you get most commonly get asked and how do you respond? We’re generally asked about various elements that our couples would like captured in their video. For example, you may want your lovely home featured at the very start or perhaps there’s a certain relative you’d like to make sure is included. We want to make sure your video is perfect, so the more ground we cover, the more we can tailor the requirements before the big day. How can we make our big day totally ‘us’? We like to take the stealthy approach and ensure we’re not stepping on anyone’s toes during the capturing of your big day. We recognise that your day is all about you, so we aim to be as non-invasive as possible and allow you room to breathe. Our process takes us alongside the photographer throughout the day, so we’ll essentially be capturing moving versions of your photos. We then take this footage and deliver a beautiful, slow motion, cinematic highlight reel, along with your ceremony and speeches recorded and delivered separately, in full.

THE DRESS Hayley Freeman-Revell, Victoria Grace Bridal www.victoriagracebridal.co.uk

What’s your top planning tip when it comes to the wedding video? Have an informal meeting with your videographer at your venue prior to the wedding. You’ll be able to walk around together and scope out what’s happening when and where, as well as ask any further questions you might have. We love walking around the venues’ grounds filming some cinematic shots to weave into our couples’ videos.

We’re engaged! Now what? Sit down with your partner and decide what kind of wedding you both want. Write a list of what’s important to you both so you can keep this in mind when you’re planning. What’s the one question you get most commonly get asked and how do you respond? As a bridal shop it’s whether we cater for all shapes and sizes. The answer is yes! One of the most important and rewarding parts of what we do is getting to make every bride feel amazing.

How can we make our big day totally ‘us’? It’s so important to plan your wedding around the two of you. Communicate and plan your wedding together making sure it’s full of memories you can share. What’s your top planning tip when it comes to the dress? When you start looking for your gown be sure to do your research. Look at designers and make a list of your favourites. Find shops in and around your area and speak to them, especially if you have any concerns or worries. And finally, don’t leave it too late! Make sure you give yourself enough time to order a gown and have alterations done without it being a rush. Enjoy every moment. 67

YOUR BIG-DAY BEST

Claire Aunger, Kent Professional Makeup and Therapies https://kentprofessionalmakeup.co.uk

THE CEREMONY Alex Hilder Celebrant www.alexhildercelebrant.co.uk We’re engaged! Now what? Remember to take some time with the deep stuff such as why it is that you’ve taken the plunge and decided to get married. What is it about your relationship that makes you want to share it with the world? There’s nowhere near the social pressure to get married that there once was, so spend some time understanding your ‘why.’ From here, the rest will flow easily: how you want to feel, how you want your guests to feel, where you’d like to be, what vibe you want to create, who you want involved... So, when you get to the next step of exploring the amazing range of talented suppliers that we have in Kent, it’ll make it much simpler to find the ones you really gel with. What’s the one question you most commonly get asked and how do you respond? “What can we include in our ceremony and is there anything we can’t say?” To which the reply is always: “You can include anything and say anything you like!” Because the legal registration of your marriage takes place separately, there are no rules for your celebrant-led ceremony. You can say anything, do anything, and include anyone you like! You can even hold it anywhere – on a boat, in the woods, in a restaurant, village hall, back garden, at your licensed venue. Having said that, ‘no rules’ can be an overwhelming place to be. So, I always work with my couples to get to the heart of things, discovering the elements that are key to them and even aspects they definitely wouldn’t want. Then, it’s like doing a jigsaw. With all of the pieces of the puzzle, we can build an entirely unique ceremony. How can we make our big day totally ‘us’? Book a celebrant – its what we do. We’ll work together for several months in the lead up to your day getting to know each other. We can talk about spiritual beliefs – maybe you’re drawn to a nature-based spirituality or bringing together two different religious backgrounds; perhaps there’s a vague feeling of something or maybe it’s not part of your life at all. Then, there are the symbolic rituals, which you may choose to include such as the traditional exchanging rings or handfasting, or modern ones such as sand ceremonies or cocktail making. We can even create a totally bespoke one with symbolism to represent you. What’s your top planing tip when it comes to the ceremony? Don’t let it be the boring bit! The ceremony is the heart of your whole day and the reason you’re all gathered together. Draw your family and friends into your special world, get them laughing and crying, and let it be a celebration of all that’s brought you to that moment. 68

We’re engaged! Now what? It’s key to find a make-up artist you feel comfortable with and who offers the style of make-up you’re after. Check to see if they also offer packages such as the Bride-to-Be Package that we have. These include facials, manicures, pedicures and so on, to prepare you for your big day. Make sure you go meet your make-up artist for a trial as well, usually four to six months before the day, but don’t leave it that late to find an MUA as many get booked up years in advance. What’s the one question you most commonly get asked and how do you respond? “Can you cover my blemishes/skin imperfections?” The answer is generally “yes,” however always remember: if you skin has raised bumps, such as spots or whiteheads, the surface may still appear slightly raised. I love and highly recommend Airbase Airbrush Makeup for the majority of my brides as it’s light weight yet builds great coverage. How can we make our big day totally us? It’s important to speak with all of your suppliers ensuring you’re completely happy with what they’re offering. I always advise building some ‘us time’ into your special day, so you can have some space alone to absorb everything. Having a couples massage the day before can also be a great way to start the countdown to W-day. What’s your top planning tip when it comes to big-day beauty? Start a facial routine that’s tailored to your specific skin requirements six to 12 months ahead. Speak to your makeup artist or beauty therapist to see if they can recommend products for you. My brides are recommended Eve Taylor Skincare as it’s professional yet affordable and gives great results. Having a manicure and pedicure every four to six weeks will keep your skin and nails looking great and massages are a fab way to make you feel stress-free and relaxed.

T

he goal for this team of local suppliers was to create an ethical and sustainable shoot, incorporating the intimate countryside feel of Hayne House. From the upcycled Campervan prosecco bar to the wedding stationery printed on recycled seeded paper, this project resulted in a romantic, sweet, stylish and, above all, kind setting for its couple’s union. Hayne House is an eco-friendly venue and the perfect location. The Orangery brings the outside in offering a natural flow through to the beautiful gardens. It certainly fit the bill as a lovely light-filled spot to complement the team’s palette of sweet tones. On the subject of the joyous palette, it was chosen to energise – creating a visually fun and happy environment. Just perfect for a wedding day. 71

Don’t do boring? Great! If you want to celebrate your unique love story your way, how about a wedding ceremony to avoid those yawnsome template scripted services? (If you are already married, I am also super happy to help you renew your vows too.) My main job is to get to know you both and help deliver the perfect and fun day for you, from scratch, that represents who you both are. Quirks ‘n all! A celebrant-led ceremony is where the ceremony includes your love story plus any fun elements you’d like (think handfasting, wine ceremony, heck, even have your dog involved!) and can take place anywhere/ anytime as by using a celebrant, you have few restrictions... Your day can be as formal or relaxed and laid-back as you like, with it being all about you and your loved ones.

o doubt your planning checklist will already feature most of the all-important elements that immediately spring to mind the moment anyone says “wedding.” You’ve got your venue, flowers, cake, photographer, attire, catering, and so on. But it’s those extra special finishing touches that’ll make your personalities shine through and make this celebration of your love one that everyone present will remember forever. The even better news? These added touches don’t need to break to bank! We reached out to the county’s talented suppliers for their most creative ideas, sure to inspire you.

“Suspended decor hanging from the ceiling provides an extravagant and unexpected ambience, offering something different in addition to the traditional centrepieces.” – Michelle Fisher, Blue Sky China and Bunting

“Dare to be different on your wedding day with these pretty and cute floral handbags. Perfect for keeping your lipstick and tissues close by as well as a beautiful keepsake.” – Linsey Sinclair, Stag Cottage Flowers

“Add a floral or draped backdrop behind the top table to turn it into a focal point with a touch of elegance. It can then be moved after the wedding breakfast and used as a background for guest selfies.” – Marcus and Daniel Kyte-Collings, KC Weddings & Events “It’s the smaller details from floral hair pieces to table settings and welcome boards that bring a wonderful coherence to your day. Finishing touches add extra special elements both creating memories and continuing family traditions.” – Elizabeth Morgan, Bizzy Lizzy Flowers

“Keep your guests germ free with a sanitising station.” – Mercedes Gale, 4 Ya Party

“Using all of your space is the key to creating the wow factor. Hanging installations are the perfect way to enclose your guests in an enchanting atmosphere.” – Michelle, Blue Sky China and Bunting

“I like to ask if there are favourite flowers, colours or fragrances significant to the couple. Perhaps they offer a reminder of family members past and present, thus including them in the wedding day. A family heirloom, such as a brooch on your bouquet or mini photo pendant of loved ones can add a special finishing touch.” – Elizabeth, Bizzy Lizzy Flowers

“I love adding coordinating ribbon detail to the bride’s bouquet, wedding party buttonieres and corsages as these are often captured in the photos.” – Elizabeth, Bizzy Lizzy Flowers “If you’re keen not to leave out a very special furry member of the family on your big day, hire a wedding chaperone service offering you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your beloved pet is in safe hands and sharing the experience with you as you say ‘I do.’” – Sarah King, Kings Pet Services 82

Big-day best

Q&A

Look and feel at your best for the big day with help from the professionals FIGHTING FIT

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

What are your top bridal beauty tips?

I’m beginner when it comes to exercise. How do I feel fitter for my wedding and honeymoon?

Nicola says: In the lead up to your big day I recommend you get into a good routine with cleansing, exfoliating away any dead skin cells and nourishing from the inside. After all, good skin is key to good make-up application. Drinking plenty of water is important to keep you hydrated as your body reacts so much better when it is. Cutting down on caffeine and alcohol and upping your water intake will be reflected in your skin and you’ll really notice the difference. Invest in some muslin cloths to help with exfoliation and use gentle products rather than chunky creams. Keep your face and eye care products cool to help you feel refreshed on the day.

Helen says: The best thing to do is find a workout that suits you and fits into your life. OrangeTheory for example is a workout that’s suitable for everyone. It’s an hour-long full-body group workout that makes exercise simple. We focus on heart rate-based training, guaranteed to produce results from the inside out. It’s backed by science and proven to burn more calories post-workout. The session is tracked by technology, so you can monitor your results in real time. Plus, each workout is inspired and led by certified coaches to make sure you don’t overtrain or undertrain.

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). BRUSH UP

Make-up brushes are notoriously difficult to recycle, which is why Otis Batterbee has launched One Brush Two Lives. The time to take care of our planet is well overdue, so when your Otis Batterbee brushes are worn and in need of replacement, simply send them back to the brand’s HQ where every element will be recycled. The brand has recently launched some new luxurious make-up brush collections, which are a great place to get you started. EDITOR LOVES

We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

UPLIFTED

Until recently the best-kept secret in Paris, Odile is an exclusive skincare line carefully curated to provide maximum results with minimum effort. Sounds good to me! OR, j’etincelle caught my eye. A lightweight gel it contains a wealth of potent activators to revive tired and puffy eyes, while improving the appearance of fine lines and over time this delicate area should appear brighter. To use as a pre-wedding pamper treatment as an under-eye mask apply as a thick layer and leave for 15 minutes before wiping away to reveal instantly brightened and lifted results. It’s suitable for daily use too though – simply pat a small amount around the eye area morning and night. Find it at https://odile.co.uk, priced at £45. 107
