inally, the sun is shining! It feels like it’s been a long time coming doesn’t it? As much as I’m very much a winter bunny, I must admit that feeling a warm breeze on my face for a change has cheered me up. My friends and I have decided to compile a bucket list of activities we’d like to enjoy this summer, and plans are well underway for our very own CWM bride’s hen do. If you’re worried about what your best gals might have planned for yours, the best way is to maintain an open line of communication. Make sure you lay down perimeters and make it abundantly clear well in advance if L plates, sashes and the like aren’t your thing. Olivia, Nolwenn and I sat bride Melissa down for a chat first to make sure we didn’t make any faux pas and asked her to provide us with a guest list and options for available dates. No doubt you’ll have been careful about your bridesmaid choices, they love you and know you well, so we’re sure you’re in capable hands. Relax and enjoy the break from planning everything yourself. You’ll find this, the first of our summer issues, brimming with plenty of inspiration and advice as always. We take a look into the world of wedding cakes and asked the county’s best to show us their most showstopping bakes. Plus, if you’re looking to put the finishing touches to your outfit for the big day, look no further than our jewellery and accessories feature, which has everything from the quirky to the classic. Still hungry for more wedspiration? Don’t forget to check out our social media channels @YourKentWeddingMagazine, @cwm_wedding, @countyweddings and of course, the latest member of the family, our YouTube channel (just head over to www.youtube.com and search “County Wedding Magazines”). Enjoy and keeeep planning!

A FINE VINTAGE
Folc, England’s highest ranking still rose, is set to launch its new 2021 vintage just in time for summer. Having launched last year, Tonbridge-based Folc impressed wine critics and accrued numerous awards both nationally and on an international scale. Folc’ 2021 vintage is a blend of six different grape varieties all sourced from family-run vineyards in Kent, East and West Sussex and Suffolk: pinot noir, pinot meunier, chardonnay, pinot gris, bacchus and kerner. The grapes will then make a short trip to Canterbury where they meet Folc’s talented winemakers with a combined 60 years of winemaking experience. The brand also brings issues such as sustainability and inclusion to the fore. The winery is accredited with the WineGB Sustainability Scheme, reducing the environmental impact of wine packaging and levels of greenhouse gas emission as well as the volume of water used and the carbon footprint per bottle. Each cork used to seal the bottles is plant based and carbon negative, and all of the packaging is biodegradable, recycled and recyclable. The company’s mission is to be fully carbon neutral within the next few years. The word, Folc, is the Old English word for people, tribe and family and this is a wine designed to bring people together, best enjoyed chilled with loved ones! Check out www.drinkfolc.com

A new sustainable shopping experience is arriving at Ashford Designer Outlet, as it welcomes pre-loved designer apparel store Bond Street to Your Street. The brand offers guests a chance to buy and sell their pre-loved designer clothes and accessories bringing a new breath of life to their wardrobes. Bond Street to Your Street has become a trusted name within its market boasting a global following, and stocks designers such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Mulberry and Gucci all with pieces at a fraction of their original price. The new opening also elevates the centre’s current sustainable initiative: Recycle Your Fashion. Here, you’re invited to donate unwanted clothing items to guest services and as a thank you you’ll receive a 10 per cent discount voucher to use at participating stores. EDITOR LOVES
How special would it be to literally write your love across the sky on your wedding day? Well, now you can with AJ Pyrotechnics’ amazing heart fireworks. The company’s Adrian Walters says, “They each spin out of a firing tube at hundreds of miles per hour and it really is luck that they break the right way around! For the one in the picture, I angled it slightly into the wind and crossed my fingers!” The heart is a specially-bought piece, which comes ready prepared to be loaded and fired. Adrian is finding that more and more couples are asking for them and is currently considering tailoring a dedicated section of the displays to them – “We could fill the sky with several of them joined together,” Adrian says. He continues, “I always strive to get the latest designs from abroad wherever possible, which is something that sets us apart within the industry. So, when I say ‘all shows are different and each delivers the wow factor,’ you know why!” Find out more at www.ajpyrotechnics.co.uk

et in the heart of rural Kent, Frasers of Egerton is a dream wedding venue with a very special difference. This idyllic 300-acre estate delivers quality in abundance, that’s for sure – from its award-winning restaurant and exquisite menus that use top quality local and seasonal produce, to its beautifully decorated rooms and spectacular scenery on all sides.

GREEN WEDDINGS But what really makes Frasers stand out is the strong sustainable ethos and commitment that underpins everything you see and do at this stunning country eco estate. It already produces 80% of its own energy needs through a ground source heat pump and solar panels, with the aim of being entirely carbon neutral within a few years. It’s no wonder it’s building a great reputation for delivering the perfect eco-wedding, without compromising on style. Oozing luxury and charm, this private eco estate is available for exclusive hire for weddings of all sizes, as well as other celebrations and events. It can host large weddings with up to 200 guests in Fraser’s own marquee, which is located on the lawn surrounded by picturesque rose gardens. In addition, smaller boutique weddings are becoming particularly popular. Proprietor Lisa Fraser says, “We find that many of the couples who choose to get married here at Frasers are looking for a wedding venue that’s a little bit different, something that’s more personal and memorable for them and their guests. While many of our weddings have been larger events, there seems to be a trend now for smaller, more intimate weddings, as well as greater interest in sustainability and eco-weddings, and we certainly tick all the boxes there. In addition, as a family-run business, our personal approach and our ability to be flexible mean that each couple has the freedom to create their own bespoke wedding day.”
COMPLETELY BESPOKE Every wedding at Frasers is specially tailored to the happy couple’s requirements, but some people prefer a little more guidance so Frasers has put together a new package for boutique weddings hosting 20-50 guests. The wedding itself is held in the romantically decorated Frasers Barn, an oak-framed timber Kentish building. Following the ceremony, the wedding guests move to the fabulous Stag’s Barn passive building for drinks and canapés while the newlyweds have their photographs taken, before everyone returns back to the main timbered barn for the wedding celebrations. Mind you, the wedding photos can take some time in a beautiful setting like this! Surrounded by stunning scenery and an abundance of nature, there are a multitude of photo options to choose from, including meadows of wildflowers, rustic rural landscapes and spectacular sunsets. A wedding at Frasers is a truly Kentish country wedding, with all of the food and drink sourced within 30 miles – including Kentish wines, beers and ciders – and much of the produce being fresh from Frasers’ own farm and kitchen garden. Almost everything that is bought in comes from local suppliers and, if the happy couple wishes, Lisa can provide seasonal flower arrangements and source eco wedding favours. For couples who are keen to have some rustic fun with their décor, they’ve been known to use milk churns as vases, cattle troughs as coolers and farm crates as pop-up bars!

The venue works with a number of professional caterers who have been selected for their excellent service and quality of food. They cover all cuisines and catering styles, and can create endless menu options for any wedding. The venue’s ceremony license is currently on hold due to building work but blessings are currently available, so get in touch to find out more. REAL WEDDING

nt proposed to Amy in front of the tree that first Christmas morning in their new home. Once the season and their incredible news had been celebrated and decorations were packed away, thoughts turned to wedding venues. They discovered Wilderness Weddings at Preston Court and were instantly attracted by the peacefulness and natural beauty of its outdoor setting. Ant says, “We love how relaxed it made us feel. The ceremony area really sold it for us, with the water in the background. We also loved how there was a clear flow through the venue and could easily picture how our day there would be. During our first visit Amy cried as she loved it so much, so it had to be done!” Keen to know more, we got the lowdown on W-day from groom, Ant...
SETTING THE SCENE The location lent itself perfectly to a bohemian woodland wedding vibe and the couple settled on a palette of burnt orange, olive and cream. All of the floral displays distributed throughout the ceremony and reception space were designed to reflect the theme with pampas grass, bunny tails and other dried flowers. The gorgeous terracotta hue was continued through the table plan, which was displayed in photo frames and surrounded by more dried flowers. Each centrepiece featured a glass vase filled with various varieties of dried flowers and the couple made and dyed the table runners and napkins themselves. The tables were also decorated with the wedding favours, which doubled up as place names. Guests were gifted a succulent, growing inside a small terracotta pot, labelled with their name. “My mum grew them all for us, all 100 plus,” Ant tells us. The couple hired additional furniture to make the most of the beautiful outdoor setting. “Everything was boho themed from the wicker seats to the fur rugs. We’d highly recommend The Little Wedding Warehouse, Roxanne was brilliant and so accommodating,” Ant shares. “We love food!” the groom confides. So, naturally the menu was one of the most important considerations for them. “We chose Will Burnett Chef to be our caterer as his food really suited our outdoor summer wedding vibe. Will and his wife, Becca, are young, enthusiastic and genuinely really nice people to work with,” he continues. All assembled were treated to a delicious selection of canapés, one of which was created especially for them due to the couple’s love of Thai food. They later sat down to a three-course wedding breakfast and enjoyed tacos and churros in the evening. The simple and elegant big-day bake continued the decorative theme with pressed-flower embellishments. The bridal party arrived at the venue in yellow and blue vintage VW Campers. The pair also kindly arranged transport for all of their guests who were staying off site, both to and from their accommodation.
LOOKING THE PART Amy looked gorgeous in a white Rosa Clara gown with lace back. She accesorised with Freya Rose pearl heels – Martina and diamond earrings, a 10-year anniversary gift from Ant. The groom wore a two piece suit in light stone, with an olive bow tie, brown shoes and brown braces. His buttonhole featured a white flower, while the groomsmen’s were burnt orange to match the bridesmaids’ silk dresses. The other gents wore the same as Ant, apart from the father-of-the-bride and father-of-the-groom who wore three-piece suits with ties rather than bow ties. 31

TIME TO CELEBRATE Acoustic performer Mille Watson entertained guests during the post-ceremony drinks reception. She also played as Amy walked down the aisle. “So many guests commented on how good she was and how she added to the atmosphere,” Ant says. DJ Markus provided the evening entertainment and played all the right music to fill the dancefloor. Ant explains, “Our brief to him was to not play anything cheesy and he was totally on board with this.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I still can’t get over how good the day was. I expected it to be incredible but it was even better. I just remember thinking all day how amazing it was and how happy I felt. Seeing Amy for the first time and spending time alone with her throughout the day were my highlights,” Ant shares. “It was great to finally hang out with our closest friends in the evening around the bell tents on the glamping site,” he continues. Amy remembers, “I’m normally nervous about being the centre of attention, but on the day my nerves disappeared and it was just such a happy, fun and relaxed day. I’ll never forget walking down the meadow aisle and just feeling so excited. Plus, seeing friends and family from both sides getting along as if they’d known each other forever was wonderful.”
WITH THANKS Ant tells us, “Our suppliers were all incredible, but Tiggi from Salty Carnival Kiss went above and beyond. She helped us with the set up and did so much more than we’d expected. She went out of her way to make sure that everything was as we’d envisioned it with the décor and flower arrangements. Also, Jen our photographer captured the day exactly how we remember it, which meant that at one point she was standing in a river just to get the right angle! We still can’t get over how amazing our photos are.” 33

REAL WEDDING
Claire and Jo said “I do” at Nurstead Court in Meopham Images courtesy of Captain Constantin Photography
C
laire met Jo when she interviewed her for a job at their local supermarket back in 2005. Finding they both had a similar sense of humour, their chemistry grew and before long love blossomed. Twelve years later, after having kept their relationship a secret for all that time, they finally decided to tell everyone. “It was the best decision we ever made,” Claire says. She proposed to Jo on their 13th anniversary, presenting her with a photo album of their journey together and a poem that ended, “Will you be my bride?” The couple knew they wanted to get married somewhere local and found Nurstead Court. It wasn’t somewhere they were previously familiar with, but as soon as they arrived for a visit they fell in love and straight away knew it was the one. Join us as Claire tells us more about their beautiful big day on 3rd September, 2021...
37
Jo says that seeing me walking down the aisle towards her will be something that’ll stay with her forever.
Our rustic table plan included two other crossed out dates, cancelled due to Covid.
For our wedding favours we wrote personalised messages for each guest on a scroll and placed them in bottles along with a scratch card and mints.
The marquee was decorated with rustic-style bunting. We also had a wooden pallet with a poem on it and a personalised welcome sign.
The bridal bouquets featured pink roses and gypsophila, while the bridesmaids’ were purely gypsophila.
Our two-tier semi-naked cake was decorated with sugar flowers.
The place names and table numbers were cut from wood and we kept our centrepieces simple. Jars and milk bottles were filled with lights, gypsophila and pink roses and placed on a log base. 38
Jo wore Hayden by Stella York. She says she never thought she’d wear a dress like this, but when she tried it on, she genuinely fell in love with it.
Our bridesmaids wore long dusky pink, halter-neck dresses embellished with sequins.
I wanted to wear something slimfitting after losing weight, and Bluebell by Sweetheart Gowns was the perfect fit.
We had crazy golf on the lawn, which was set up after the meal. We wanted to bring something different to the day, plus we love crazy golf!
Our photographer was so full of life and energy, all our guests loved him. He made everyone feel so comfortable when having their pictures taken.
We were very conscious of the fact that there would be parts of the day where guests would be waiting around, especially when the photos were being taken. So, we wanted to ensure they’d be entertained and booked a magician for the drinks reception and wedding breakfast. He was a big hit and to this day guests still talk about him. He also did a short performance after our meal, which included some comedy. This was an unexpected treat as he hadn’t told us he was doing that for us. 39
I felt overwhelmed but in a good way. It was lovely that all of our family and friends were there to celebrate our love for one another. It was also such a relief that the day had finally arrived after moving it twice due to Covid.
We’d recommend booking a videographer for the day, as it’s a great feeling to watch the film back and relive the day.
We were due to go to the Dominican Republic on honeymoon, but have moved it to our first anniversary due to Covid. We still wanted to go away though, so we spent a week in the Lake District in a lodge with a hot tub, which we really enjoyed as it was somewhere we’d always wanted to go.

THE PERFECT MATCH Charlotte and Lee exchanged their vows at All Saints Church, Foots Cray, before heading to Rowhill Grange for the celebrations Images courtesy of TDH Media
C
harlotte and Lee met online. “He was my tall, dark and handsome and I was small – opposites attract!” Charlotte says. Lee proposed on Christmas Eve in 2019, having already asked for her mum’s permission, something he knew was important to Charlotte. They were away for the night at the Marriott Hotel in Bexleyheath, “All the kids were there with us and it was a wonderful surprise,” Charlotte remembers. The pair have a lot of happy memories associated with Rowhill Grange, such as it being the place where Charlotte first met Lee’s mum and aunt, and where they stayed for their first anniversary. So, it was the natural choice of wedding venue. Read on as the bride, Charlotte, shares more about the wedding day... 43
As a wedding present, my work colleagues paid for a white taxi to take us from Rowhill to the church and then back again.
The church service was beautiful. We know the vicar well and she even came to the reception. Everyone felt so welcome, which was especially important for our children. Our son came up, gave me a kiss and hugged us both when we said our vows.
Blush pink blooms featured in the design of the table plan, place names and table names to tie the theme together.
“We were elated to finally have our big day after having to move the date three times within a year due to Covid.”
My mum gave me away as I’ve only ever had her as a parent, so we are an incredibly close family. Since we met on match.com our favours were matches labelled: the perfect match. We also had M&Ms as both our surnames begin with the letter M. They had Mr and Mrs printed on them.
A work colleague, who used to run a cake shop, kindly created our big-day bake. Our wedding breakfast was a roast beef dinner, Lee’s favourite. 44
REAL WEDDING
We opted for blush pink flowers for the centrepieces and bouquets to reflect our colour palette and romantic theme.
I wore Mariah by Caroline Castigliano. My veil was cathedral length and scattered with light sparkles. I added a sparkly belt to lend it more of a princess-feel, just like the dress I’d drawn and dreamed of as a little girl. And I wore by sister’s tiara from her wedding 12 years previous as my something borrowed.
My sister and best friend was my bridesmaid. She wore a stunning blush fishtail dress from Jarlo. My daughter Anabelle was my flowergirl and she was a mini me! She wore a little tiara from Eden Bridal and a white satin and tulle dress. 45
Lee wore a tailored suit by Hugo Boss. He stood out from his groomsmen as he paired it with a white shirt as opposed to their light blue ones, and larger buttonhole. Our baby wore a navy suit too with navy bow tie. Our DJ played songs I’d requested for our guests to keep everyone entertained on the dancefloor.
My mum, sister, brother-in-law, nephew, Lee and I, plus our three children went on a familymoon to Bath. Lee and I went to Thermae Spa Bath one morning, which was lovely.
Having the kids involved so much, even in the speeches, made the day so special not to mention entertaining! My daughter dropped pasta down her white dress and my sister cleverly used a chair sash to cover the stain.

EXPECTATIONS Showstopping big-day bakes
T
he wedding cake: sweet treat, reception dessert or showstopping centrepiece? Who’s to say it can’t be all three? Whether you have a sweet tooth or not, the big-day bake has been an enduring tradition and wedding stalwart since couples first said “I do.” Its origins are thought to date back to Ancient Rome when a cake of wheat or barley was broken over the bride’s head to signify good fortune. Thankfully, you won’t be forced to wear the delicacy today, so it’s something that’s well worth thinking about. The modern cake maker is now more versatile than ever and can whip you up a sweet showstopper big enough to take the place of your wedding breakfast dessert, or be served at your evening reception. Handing round the slices is also a lovely way of making sure you get round to see all of your guests. Alternatively, there’s the option
to have a spectacular tower made up of cupcakes or macarons, even doughnuts if you prefer. And don’t forget, a cheese stack is a great choice if you fancy something savoury. What we love best about the modern wedding cake though is its capacity to act as a work of art and form a key focal point in your venue styling. Displayed on its own table, adorned in your wedding flowers, set against a neon sign or flower wall backdrop it’ll be a feature to remember, helping to bring your theme together. Super-talented bakers can even decorate these centrepieces to illustrate your own unique love story. So, it’s with their showstopping styling quality in mind that we bring to you a showcase of breathtaking bakes with help from local talented cake makers.

SUITED AND BOOTED

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You
58
always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.
READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a
videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

I
BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:
VENUE
CATERING
❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.
❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.
PHOTOGRAPHER
JEWELLERY
❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.
❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.
ALTERNATIONS
CAKE
❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 59

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know OUT OF THE BLUE We’ve chosen a dusky blue colour palette for our wedding, but aren’t sure how to incorporate that into the flowers. Can you offer any advice?
www.charlenewebbphotography.co.uk
Blue is one of the most popular colours when it comes to wedding palettes, in particular dusky, baby and powder hues. Not only are they romantically soft and subtle, they also suit any season from icy whites and frosty stems, to the brighter spring and summer seasons. However, blue isn’t a natural colour that bouquet focal flowers often come in, so it’s all about the foliage and filler flowers with this palette. Using silver-toned eucalyptus such as cinerea or populus brings an overall blue hue to a bouquet and this is something that’s readily available throughout the year. Dainty blooms such as oxypetalum can also be used in designs to create brighter flashes next to ivory or white. You’ll even find that some anemone varieties have blue tones at the very centre. If finding fresh flowers proves tricky though, think about the receptacle they’ll be going in – pale blue glass vases or bottles can bring colour to the table even if the petals are neutral.

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON I’m feeling stressed and overwhlemed by the planning process. What are your top tips for planing a stress-free wedding? If you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the planning process then don’t panic. The ideal thing to do would be to hire a wedding planner who can take away all the worry and make organising your big day an enjoyable experience. If a wedding planner is out of your budget though, look for a good app or journal with time sensitive checklists to help you prioritise. Try not to involve the entire wedding party. While many hands make light work, too many opinions can overwhelm you and steer you off course. Instead, choose one or two members of your posse you can rely on who’ve been through the process before. Finally, remember it’s all about the big picture. Your wedding day will be happiest day of your life and you’re marrying the love of your life! Natasha Hildyard Natasha Spencer Weddings www.natasha-spencer.co.uk 61
FLAVOURS OF KENT
There are two things to consider when planning a summer wedding. Firstly, Kentish produce at this time of year is outstanding, which allows you to keep things simple and allow the fantastic ingredients to speak for themselves. Think dishes with recognisable flavours, executed well. Secondly, it isn’t always guaranteed to be a perfect Kentish summer’s day, so do consider how your food choices would work if you were unfortunate with the weather. My recommended choice would be a barbecue with the wow factor coming from the flavours created in the cooking, combined with more of that fantastic local produce. Smoky charred notes, flavourful marinades, zingy dressings, crispy vibrant salads, crunchy sweet acidic pickling, perfectly ripe berries, it’s all seasonal flavour and it’s exactly what we love to eat at this time of year. Plus, you can be certain there’ll be a buzz among your guests as this style of menu creates a wonderfully relaxed and informal wedding breakfast for everyone. It’s not possible for everything to be locally-sourced, so the important part is allowing what can be to shine through. For example, we all know Kentish strawberries and raspberries are delicious, so choose something like a Pavlova or Eton mess where these beautiful berries are the main attraction, but if it needs the zest of a non-Kentish lemon to elevate the dish, then why not use it?

We’re both foodies and value locally-sourced produce. We’d love to wow our guests with a top-notch menu. What options are available for the summer?
THE BONDS OF LOVE We’ve heard about some of the rituals we can have during a celebrant-led ceremony from hand-fasting to candle-lighting, but what’s the difference and how do we know which is right for us? Using rituals within your wedding ceremony is a lovely way to add some personality to kick off your wedding celebrations. Hand-tying and unity candle ceremonies are currently two very popular elements chosen by couples and they’re used to symbolise different things. A hand-tying represents the bonds of marriage. You may recognise the term “tying the knot” and couples have enjoyed this ritual for hundreds of years, celebrating with the use of ribbons and/or cords, usually binding their hands together expressing joint vows and maybe involving family members. 62
A unity candle ceremony involves the use of individual tapers that work together to light a larger, family candle. The candles represent the individuality of the couple and uniting together to light the larger one represents the joining of two families. Additional loved ones can be included too, perhaps there are children from previous marriages or you may wish to involve parents or grandparents. This is a great ritual for those who want to celebrate the larger family unit, bringing everyone together. Having a celebrant-led ceremony gives you so many options for using rituals within your wedding, including those that have a personal meaning to you. In fact, there’s nothing to stop you creating your own version, which could become a wonderful family tradition in the future. Karina O’Donnell | Simply Ceremonies www.celebrant-uk.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE
AL FRESCO OPTIONS We’d love an outdoor wedding, but don’t know where to start. What are the must-know essentials? Outdoor weddings can be stunning and with glorious summer weather even better, but there are a number of things to consider. Top of this list would be making sure you check the legalities. If you’re opting for an outdoor ceremony, check the grounds of your chosen location are licensed. It’s fantastic news that outdoor weddings have recently been legalised permanently, however the venue grounds still need to be licensed for weddings, so do make sure you check. Think about conditions too. We all know the good old British weather can be a bit hit and miss, so make sure you consider the time of year and plan accordingly. For example, if there’s a chance of rain you may wish to have shelter or umbrellas available. Chilly evenings may call for warm blankets and cushions. If it’s going to be super-hot, you may need
parasols and a shelter for your guests so they can get some shade. You may also wish to provide sunscreen and insect repellent. Choose suppliers who are used to setting up and delivering their service outside. For example, consider catering options that will work in an outdoor setting. You’ll also need to take into account aspects such as how your guests will get to the location, lighting, heating, toilets and other amenities – make sure all of the logistics are covered. Bear your setting in mind when shopping for the big-day attire and dress accordingly. A huge and heavy dress and super-high heels aren’t going to work for a simple beach wedding, whereas jewelled sandals and a floaty or sheer dress will be just perfect. Finally, always have a plan B! It helps to plan for every eventuality. Becky Ramus | Waves Weddings and Events www.wavesweddingsandevents.com
PICK OF THE BUNCH
https://heartfulloftea.com
I adore fresh flowers so my bridal bouquet is really important to me. I’d love it to feature some unusual blooms and colours outside of the usual wedding favourites of roses and peonies. Could you give me some inspiration? There are plenty of gorgeous floral options available at different points throughout the year, which can be used to create untraditional and romantic arrangements. Your florist will know what’s in season at the time of your wedding, so work with them to create a colour palette that represents you and don’t be afraid to choose what feels personal to you. During the springtime, ranunculus are a great option as they’re frilly with plenty of petals just like a rose or peony. They’re available in soft pinks, peaches and white as well as bold red and yellow. Tulips are another great choice during the spring and as well as coming in an array of colours there are lots of interesting varieties such as parrot, double petalled and frilly fringe tulips. Dahlias are showstopping during the summer and autumn months. They come in an assortment of shapes and sizes in soft, neutral tones as well as bright and vivid hues. Using a range of dahlia varieties in your bouquet can certainly create a real impact. On the other hand, winter is a great time for anemones, which are perfect if you love rich, jewel tones or classic, striking white. You can also embrace the festive season and use berries with rich foliage, such as ivy and pittosporum. Gemma Pearce | Ultramarine www.ultramarineflowers.com 63

Considering the hardiness of the metal you choose for example is important. More on that later! There’ll be something out there to suit whatever your budget though.
2 STEP
KNOW YOUR RING SIZE
It’s important to get this right before you order as not all rings can be easily resized without a major overhaul of the design. Your jeweller will take your measurements properly, but if you’d like to get an idea for yourself there are plenty of measuring guides online.
3 STEP
CONSIDER YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING
Be sure to wear your engagement ring when you’re shopping for the wedding bands as it will influence your choice. You’ll likely want to match the metal and even the shape, stones and depth. This is doubly important if you want your wedding band to be shaped around the design of your engagement
“There’s never a wrong choice as long as you stay true to your personal taste and not what’s popular. This ensures that as the years pass, you’ll always enjoy your ring.” – Natalie Towell, www.navettejewellery.co.uk ring. Many jewellers offer ready-shaped options to fit alongside standard diamond cuts such as marquise and pear, but you can always go down the custom-made route if none of them work. Natalie Towell at Navette Jewellery Studio (www.navettejewellery.co.uk) says, “Advice and guidance from experienced jewellers is always offered at wedding ring fittings, as well as suggestions for the perfect ring set for you both. A top tip for gents is to opt for a comfort fit, where the inside of the ring is curved to sit correctly on the hand.”
4 STEP
WHAT’S YOUR STYLE?
Once upon a time wedding rings were by and large simple gold bands, but nowadays the options are incredibly varied. On a basic level there’s eternity (where stones go all the way around), half eternity (where they cover half the band) or plain of course; then there’s matte or polished... we could go on. Also, have a think about whether you want your rings to match,
complement each other or be completely different. Natalie says, “Try them on and see what suits your hand shape. There’s a surprising amount of choice when it comes to the humble wedding band, so just as you’d have a fitting for your wedding attire, so you must for your rings.”
5
STEP
WHICH METAL?
This is arguably the most crucial decision as it will affect everything from the cost to the longevity of your rings, as well as the obvious look. The hardest wearing precious metal is platinum, which holds polish a lot longer than white gold. Alternatively, 18ct gold is best if you prefer the yellow tone.
6
STEP
PERSONALISATION
Your wedding rings are the ultimate symbol of your love and commitment to one another, so why not personalise them as much as possible. While all of the above will do that for you, you can go one step further by having them engraved with a meaningful phrase, your initials and wedding date or even your finger prints.
DID YOU KNOW? Traditionally, the wedding ring goes onto the third finger of your left hand first, so that it’s the closest one to your heart. The engagement ring will be next followed by any eternity rings you’re lucky enough to receive for future anniversaries! 71

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
BRIDE TRIBE BEAUTY
My bridesmaids are just as nervous about their W-day make-up as I am about mine. Is it possible for them to have a trial too? What can we do to make them feel comfortable? Katie says: We totally understand that everyone in your bridal party will have their own concerns regarding how they’ll look on your wedding day. So, our aim is to ensure you all feel comfortable and confident at such an important event. We’d encourage you to save photos of the type of look you prefer, even using Pinterest to create a board to share with your hair stylist and make-up artist. This way, your beauty team is able to ensure they fully understand the desired effect, making sure you’re all on the same page. We also recommend saving styles or looks you don’t like, as this all helps to build a clear picture of your likes and dislikes, as well as those of your bridesmaids. We can offer hair and make-up trials for everyone in your I-do crew, something that offers reassurance for all, as well as helping to make sure a cohesive look is achieved, with the bridal party make-up and styling complementing the bride’s. Beautiful photos are guaranteed!
BOHO BABE
I’m going for a relaxed boho vibe for my wedding. What hair and make-up looks would be most fitting? Laetitia says: The boho style is still a popular trend. With a cool, laid back and informal vibe, it works well with a festival theme, so a natural and sun-kissed make-up will suit. Go for glowing skin that captures the light. Apply radiance primers such as Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter underneath your foundation to achieve lit-from-within skin. Dial up the glow with a shimmering powder highlighter applied to the cheekbones, down the centre of the nose and on the cupid’s bow. Delilah’s Pure Light Illuminating Powder is one of my favourites. Eyes always need extra definition on your wedding day, to register on camera and to balance your dress and hair style. Choose shades to enhance their colour, keep lines soft and well blended, add fluttery eyelashes or semi-permanent extensions, and remember to define and sweep up your brows using a gel to hold in place. Use a lovely warm bronzer swept where the sun naturally catches to contour the cheeks, which works wonders, and don’t forget to add that vital healthy glow with a blusher. I love corals like Delilah’s Clementine, NARS’ Torrid, Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess and Delilah’s Sunset Bronzer. Natural lips and a slick of lip gloss would finish this look perfectly. Try Charlotte Tilbury’s In Love With Olivia, Dance Floor Princess and Glowing Jen from the Hot Lips Refillable range with Lip Lustre in Portobello Girl, and Delilah’s Flirt and Nude Lip Wardrobe. For the more adventurous, why not really embrace the boho vibe and go for some adornments around the eyes, like tiny pearls or jewels glued in place. Delicate flowers and petals could be drawn on the cheekbones for that modern, hippy look. You could even have a beautiful floral artwork drawn directly onto your back if you’re wearing a backless dress or consider a temporary tattoo for an eye-catching statement.

FULL BLAST
There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

We all know that too much sun is damaging to the skin, so to ensure yours is on point for W-day it’s important to protect it. Dr. Hauschka’s new Tinted Face Sun Cream SPF 30 gives the face a radiantly fresh, sun-kissed glow and supports the skin’s natural defences. Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

SOUTH AFRICA
Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com 91

The gym, along with the fully-equipped spa room, encapsulates an oasis of wellness. Dimos Stasinopoulos, the CEO and founder of Epoque Collection, tells us: “We’re beyond excited to have an active role in the creation of the first Nobu Hotel and Restaurant in Greece, on the island of Santorini. Our cooperation with MonteRock International, a group with an international presence in the business and hospitality sector, guarantees that this project carves a new path in the way boutique hotels are perceived domestically. Hotels will not only be singled out due to brand’s name but also for its design, location, landscape, and service.” Check out www.nobuhotels.com for more information.

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination
A
fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there!
