While the past year or so has been tough, the wedding industry has pushed through and remained positive. We caught up with owner Domenica Francesca Goode to find out more. Tell us about your company… We’re one of the few stationery businesses that have a studio and showroom in London. We offer in-person appointments to truly understand our couples and be able to guide them and give their wedding stationery that personal touch. I studied at London College of Fashion with a BA in Fashion Design. Coming from a family of printers, I wanted to show that you can have luxurious and personal stationery in a template-driven industry, while making it affordable. What does it mean to you that so many people are inspired by your Instagram? Wow! Where do I begin? The business stood steadily at under 1,000 followers for more than four years, but with continuous work and creative content we’ve built that up to where we are today. We love sharing updates and stories on our feed, as well as showcasing all our different styles. A particular favourite is our laser-cutting videos – they’re mesmerising to watch! Tell us about your favourite range… In a time when travel has been off the cards, we’re loving our new passport collection. London is such a multicultural place, and we love making these for destination weddings to get guests excited to pack their bags. They’re also great for travel fanatics who are having a travel-themed day.

The pandemic has been challenging for all of us in many ways, so it’s been particularly important to hang on to moments of joy. We spoke to Michelle of The Old Finsbury Town Hall to hear about how the venue has kept going through the pandemic. “Despite these extraordinary times, we have taken stock of our situation, adapted and remained positive,” Michelle says. “While many couples had to put their plans on hold, we were able to host a number of intimate weddings – in line with government guidelines. We thrive on helping our couples realise their dream day and create those perfect lifelong memories.” Michelle continues, “As we look forward to returning to a life that we have a little more control of, there’s a strong sense of wanting to hold on to beautiful things that happened in the lead up to the pandemic. One of those moments for us was Candy and Max’s ( @ridingeverest) amazing wedding celebrations. ana and Brendan first met while they were playing hockey at the same club – although their relationship didn’t get off to the best of starts. “I didn’t like him at first, after he poured prosecco on me while we were on tour,” Hana laughs. “However, in classic cliché form, we got to know each other and a romance kindled.” The couple had discussed getting married, and with a trip to New York coming up, Brendan knew the time was right. “He proposed in our hotel room after we checked in,” Hana tells us. “There was a sign on the wall saying “Marry me” and some flowers. It was a surprise at the time as I missed the sign – I was too busy deciding which side of the bed I wanted to sleep on!” Back home, the loved-up pair set the date for 30th March, 2019, and chose the exquisite Eltham Palace as the setting. We chat to Hana about how it all came together…

PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON Eltham Palace was the perfect location for Hana and Brendan; they knew it was the one for them as soon as they walked over the pretty moat bridge. As Hana is halfJapanese, the couple opted for a Japanese and cherry blossom theme, with a nod to Disney. This was all pulled together by a palette of claret, mint and gold. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were pink and white, while Hana’s arrangement incorporated red blooms too. “The red 37

REAL WEDDINGS matched the girls’ dresses, while the pink tied into the cherry blossom elements,” Hana says. “A family friend designed a subtle Disney-themed lantern for each table with faux cherry blossom branches. Tied to these were hand-folded origami cranes that Brendan and I made.” The bride’s best friend created the wedding cake and cupcakes, which were decorated with sugarcraft cherry blossoms made by the bride’s grandmother. The tables were given Disney-inspired names, such as Pride Rock, while the place settings were made from Hana and Brendan’s hand-crafted origami cranes. “As favours, we gave our loved ones a sweet bag each,” Hana says. “They could then help themselves to Brendan’s favourite sweets, and doughnuts, which are my favourite treat.”

AISLE STYLE Hana was lucky enough to have her stunning gown designed and made by a friend. “It was a short dress with pretty mint flowers and gold beads on the straps,” she says. “It had a removable floor-length lace skirt, which matched my veil. After the first dance, I took the long skirt off so I could enjoy the night without tripping over! During the wedding breakfast, I took off my veil and wore a traditional Japanese hairpiece to honour my heritage.” Brendan looked smart in a blue suit with a grey waistcoat and red accessories to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. He stood out from the groomsmen who wore the same suit but with light blue waistcoats and mint accessories. “My best girls wore David’s Bridal and Vera Wang dresses,” Hana says. “They were all the same colour but they each chose their own style so they were comfortable in them.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE On the day, a 1930s Rolls Royce limousine was hired to ensure they were transported in style. After the ceremony, guests were treated to a reception with canapés and drinks, then a sumptuous three-course sit-down meal followed by a DJ to get the party started. “The best money we spent was on our first-dance lessons with Start the Dance,” Hana says. “We rehearsed the routine in advance so that we could surprise our nearest and dearest. Everyone was so shocked as they know that Brendan hates dancing!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS How did the pair feel on the day? “It felt exactly like it was meant to,” Hana smiles. “We had so much fun. There were no nerves, just lots of laughter. We got to see our hard work designing all the little details come together. We had so much support from friends and family to bring the day to life, and our guests all noticed how personalised the day was. Our wedding coordinator at the venue, Annabelle, made the day run so smoothly; we didn’t have to do anything but have a good time.” One of the funniest moments of the day came during the ceremony. “The registrar introduced Brendan as Brenda!” Hana says. “They then asked if I’d take Michael as my lawfully wedded husband! As you can imagine, during this serious moment it could have been awkward, but it had the whole room laughing.”

Although the plan was just to have a couple of drinks, this soon turned into a meal and chatting all evening. “We were instantly attracted to each other and conversation flowed so easily,” Sylwena says. “A sense of humour and not taking oneself too seriously was definitely part of the attraction!” Fast forward into their relationship and Iain was planning to pop that all-important question, and he chose the most romantic spot in which to do so. “He proposed on a trip to Iles Sanguinaires, a set of small isles off Corsica, which are only accessible by boat,” Sylwena says. “A small lighthouse sits at the top of the largest island and we were all alone when Iain presented a beautiful ring.” The pair set the date for 1st June, 2019, with a ceremony at King’s College Chapel on the Strand. “Sylwena is a King’s College graduate,” Iain tells us. “The Chapel is stunningly beautiful, rich in colour and also wonderfully intimate. It was even more special as Sylwena’s father sadly passed away before we met, and the university campus holds fond memories for her family of Sylwena’s graduation. It made us feel more connected to him.” The couple then had to find the perfect reception venue. Sylwena continues the story… 43

s soon as Monique and Jonathan met there was an attraction; their personalities complemented each other brilliantly. Monique tells us, “I loved how fun-loving and adventurous he was. He had lived in ten different countries in ten years and spoke four languages!” Jonathan says it was Monique’s boundless curiosity and gentle soul that made her his perfect match. When it came to popping the question, Jonathan managed to keep it a total surprise. “Jon proposed on 30th

December, 2019, in Florence,” Monique says. “He used to live there, and we had gone for New Year’s Eve. Doing it the day before meant I didn’t expect a thing!” After having to postpone once, the pair set the date for 12th September, 2020. Although the pandemic meant that their day wasn’t exactly how they envisioned, they were still able to have an intimate city wedding, with a ceremony at the Old Marylebone Town Hall, followed by a celebration at The Orrery. Monique continues the story… 49 

It was the amazing natural light and beautiful terrace at The Orrery that first attracted us. The perfect food and service sealed the deal. 50

We wanted a timeless feel for the day, so we opted for a palette of ivory and pastels.

I wore a Jonathan Simkhai tie-waist crepe jumpsuit with Nicholas Kirkwood ballerina shoes, while Jon looked dashing in a Prada suit. Unfortunately because of coronavirus restrictions, we weren’t able to have bridesmaids or groomsmen. We gave our guests personalised face masks as wedding favours. We also sourced individually packaged confetti, which was particularly important because of COVID-19.

Although parties weren’t allowed during the pandemic, we were able to host a small champagne reception on the glorious rooftop terrace at The Orrery.

We were so excited and overwhelmed by all the love and effort made by our family and friends. We were also happy that our second wedding attempt of the year was successful!

It was amazing that everyone was able to make it – including my parents from Dubai and Jon’s parents and brother from Barcelona. We had lots of fantastic speeches, which made it so special.

On the day, make sure you enjoy the moment and spend some time alone together to take it all in and appreciate it.

Modern Baroque REGIONAL SHOOT

nspired by the beauty and ambience of Baroque still-life paintings, this collaborative shoot was the brainchild of London wedding planner and stylist Martha Tobyn of Anemone, Royal Museum’s Greenwich and Gyan Gurung Photography. Steeped in history, the 17th-century Queen’s House was the perfect backdrop, with its original features, modern interiors and contemporary art. “I wanted it to feel like the curated set up for a painting,” Martha explains. “It’s an artistic moment that we’ve just stepped into: a strategically placed plinth, a considered drape of fabric, an urn spilling with flowers.” Layers of texture combined with a palette full of rich colours and luxe details brought this design to life. The tablescape is a particularly magical unity of classical and contemporary design; wild floral arrangements, textured linens, antique brass vessels and rustic crockery are juxtaposed with shiny gold flatware, delicate stationery and chic glassware. “When it came to bridal looks we wanted to inspire the contemporary London bride,” Martha explains. “For the less traditional, Charlie Brear has designed the sexy and stylish gold dress. How can you keep skin looking its best in the warmer months? Prepare for your wedding by getting into a good skincare routine, and increase the steps by adding in hydrating serums, eye cream, weekly exfoliation and masks. When your skin is hydrated, your make-up will last all day. Dry skin benefits from oil and water-based serums, while oilier skins benefit from water-based essences under your moisturiser. All skin types need moisturiser and a good SPF30 as a minimum. Treat yourself to a course of professional skincare treatments in the run up to your summer wedding, but don’t try any new products in the month before. I would recommend imagining how you would style your day if it was a larger celebration, but bring it down to a smaller scale. For example, if the rustic theme is for you, then why not use long wooden tables for your intimate guest list, lanterns and abundant greenery and foliage? Add in smaller rose garlands, hessian table runners and chair sashes to complete the look. Small weddings can still be big on styling details.

Q With ever-changing restrictions, I’m not sure what style of dress to get as I don’t know if we’ll be having a small meal or huge party. What do you suggest? Firstly, you should wear whatever you feel happiest in, regardless of setting. You are the bride, so it’s basically impossible for you to be overdressed! That said, we have totally fallen for bridal separates recently and they offer the perfect solution to this issue.
