After more than 20 years in the wedding industry as an events planner, Donna Hartley-Redfearn has created multi-award-winning weddings worldwide. Over the Covid-19 pandemic, Donna has been working hard to become qualified as a celebrant and has launched North East Wedding Celebrant to offer couples meaningful and personal ceremonies. Donna adds, “Whether that be an eco-style ceremony in the forest, a modern ceremony in an urban warehouse or an intimate elopement on a mountainside – no two wedding ceremonies should be the same.” Celebrant weddings can take place in any location and give couples complete control to make their ceremony extra special and personal. Donna adds, “I find humour plays a huge part in the script for my couples. The ceremonies will be more fun, deeply meaningful and will have your guests talking for years to come.” Check out: www.northeastweddingcelebrant.co.uk

REAL WEDDINGS
P
atricia and Sean first met online, where they never expected to meet their lifelong partners. After messaging back and forth, the pair set off for their first date at Miller and Carter. Patricia says, “We had a nice meal while talking and getting to know each other more. We hit it off straight away and sealed the night with a romantic kiss.” Sean was captured by everything about Patricia and he loved how good she was with his son, which made him fall in love even more. He proposed on 28th November 2019 at the Palace of Culture and Science in Poland, which was three days after Patricia’s 29th birthday and she was so suprised! They were enjoying the stunning views when he pulled out the ring, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him – the rest is history!
SETTING THE SCENE Patricia and Sean’s wedding took place on the 28th August 2021, at the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. When searching for a property, the couple wanted a fresh and airy venue with incredible views – they found just that. The bride says, “The second we walked into the venue, we knew it was the one. The room was the perfect size for our intimate wedding and the 360 rooftop view was incredible – we knew we’d get some amazing photographs there!” To match the white and sage green colour scheme, the bride opted for a loose and natural-styled bouquet with a mix of roses and foliage, including eucalyptus and a touch of gypsophila. A satin ribbon was tied around the stems, and the bride added a charm saying ‘with you every step’ with a photo of her late grandma. Other floral touches included a huge flower arch, a beautiful flower display on the top table and small flowergirl bouquets consisting of gypsophila. The table plan helped guests find their seats and featured a beautiful flower arrangement on top. The simple white place names each featured some greenery in the corner and showed each person where to sit. There were tall-metal stands in the middle of each table, which not only looked beautiful but allowed guests to see each other easily. On top of the stands were loose floral displays with stunning hydrangeas, which made a huge statement. Each guest was given a little white envelope with a scratch card and a penny inside to highlight Sean’s love for the lottery. The bride says, “A funny moment was when our friend Matty thought he’d won the jackpot only to realise he needed six words, not just six letters to win.” The lovebirds decided to have a three-course meal for the wedding breakfast. Twice-baked cheddar cheese soufflé with an apple salad and walnuts was served for the starters, while chicken breast wrapped in Bayonne ham with green peppercorn sauce and gratin potatoes was for the main. Guests tucked into a raspberry and vanilla pavlova for dessert with raspberry yoghurt cream. To keep their loved ones from going hungry in the evening, guests enjoyed an evening buffet with hot beef and pork sandwiches as well as potato wedges. When it came to deciding on the perfect cake, the couple decided on a three-tiered bake with vanilla, lemon and coconut flavours. Fresh flowers that matched the colour scheme was added on top.
LOOKING THE PART Patricia wore a stunning dress from Sì. Bridal & Co in Newcastle by designer Riki Dalal. It featured a sheath train, plunging V-neckline, an open back, spaghetti straps and subtle beading embellishments along the top. The elegant silhouette looked beautiful, and Patricia stole the show walking down the aisle. She also made several strangers stop and compliment her and even brought some to tears. With the gown being so showstopping and sparkly, Patricia decided
27
to accessorise her look with a long and simple white veil, sparkly high heels by Badgley Mischka and simple pearl earrings – the perfect finishing touches to a timeless and classic look. The bride-to-be says, “The whole morning was filled with nerves, but I knew I looked the way I envisioned myself and was so happy with every single thing.” Sean wore a black, slim fit Moss Bros. suit with a white shirt, a black satin bow and Ted Baker shoes. The groom had one best man, Michael and his 11-year-old son Ethan was the ring bearer – both wore black suits with a black ties and shoes. Patricia’s best friend Sandra was her maid-of-honour, and she wore a muted earthy-toned dress by Victoria Lou Bridal in the colour fossil. She accessorised her look with gold jewellery and sparkly high heels.
TIME TO CELEBRATE To keep guests entertained in the evening, the couple had a DJ play some fantastic tunes that got everyone dancing. A massive hit with guests was the Mr and Mrs game, where the best man created several questions that were read out, and the pair raised either their own shoe or the other person’s to reflect the answer. The bride says, “The game was so was funny and a bit inappropriate – luckily our videographer was no longer there to capture it!” A funny moment from the day was the bouquet throw. Patricia comments. “All the single ladies had lined up only for our friend Sharon to run through the door out of nowhere to catch the bouquet at the last second and then ran away with it! Our videographer said this moment deserved its own video, it made everyone laugh hysterically and we definitely won’t forget it.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The night before the wedding, Patricia felt super nervous and didn’t sleep at all, while Sean felt fine until his bride-to-be walk down the aisle and the emotions flooded through. One moment that stood out to Sean was watching a short video message from Patricia’s dad, who unfortunately couldn’t make the wedding from the United States due to Covid-19 restrictions. He also loved having his friends and family together after a long time apart during the pandemic. Patricia loved having their photos taken on the intimate rooftop, especially the shots of the pair under her veil, as well as the stunning golden hour pictures on the beach, which allowed the two some quiet and alone time. The speeches were full of meaningful words that touched the couple’s hearts. The bride says, “The best man’s speech was super long, nine pages in total, but it made us laugh.” The photographer, Victoria at Victoria Lilly Photography and florist Zoe from Zoe The Wedding Florist, are friends of the bride and made the couple’s day that extra bit special. Patricia says, “They both went above and beyond in their own ways. Victoria was seven months pregnant at the time, and our videographer Kim put us at ease so much throughout the day by making jokes and having a laugh. They were brilliant with all the kids and so dedicated that they’ve spent half the day on the floor to get the best shots and angles.” She continues, “I’m so grateful to all my suppliers and glam squad who took full control to make me and the venue look stunning. The master-of-ceremonies took all the stress out of the day and ensured everything ran smoothly.”
HONEYMOON After such a beautiful wedding, the couple set off for Corfu in Greece for 11 nights where they had a lovely private pool, swam in the warm sea, travelled around the island and enjoyed plenty of Greek food. The couple’s original plan was to visit their family villa in Turkey, but this trip has been postponed to 2022 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The bride says, “In Corfu, we saw several beautiful places, snorkelled and scubadived with all the fish, which was the highlight of our honeymoon. The whole trip was splendid, and we made lots of amazing memories.” 28

A DAY TO
Francesca and Ben exchanged vows at Charlton Hall and used a dusty blue and blush pink colour scheme Images courtesy of Carn Patrick Photography
E
very love story has a beginning, and Francesca and Ben’s started on Tinder back in 2014. The attraction between the two was instant and after messaging back and forth, they decided to start a relationship despite the long distance between them. Francesca says, “It was the same defining moment for us both when we realised we’d found the one. Ben was abroad on his friend’s stag do, it was the first time we’d
been apart from each other and we couldn’t wait to be reunited. A long weekend felt like an eternity, especially for me stuck at home!” Ben proposed on Valentine’s Day in 2019 on the Spanish Steps in Rome and, of course, Francesca said yes! The location couldn’t have been more romantic, and the pair was so excited to get married. Here Francesca shares details about their special day... 39
We discover Charlton Hall by pure chance but fell in love with the venue and the quirky spaces immediately. The old cliché is true, you know it’s right for you the moment you see it.
Ben’s aunt runs a company called The Northern Potter and she created our handcrafted shot glasses; we had dusty blue for the men and blush pink for the ladies. We used dried arrangements with pampas and ostrich feathers for the centrepieces to tie in with the wild theme of the venue.
I had a combination of fresh and dried flowers in my bouquet; I will be getting it pressed and preserved in a frame.
40
We used dried flowers for the bridesmaid bouquets, buttonholes, and corsages to keep as a memory of the day.
We had a three tiered naked-style cake with lemon, red velvet and raspberry and white chocolate flavours.
REAL WEDDINGS
The venue provided all of the catering on the day. We had a three-course menu in addition to canapés and evening street food, which was a huge hit with guests!
I felt amazing and beautiful on the day; I barely recognised the person looking back at me in the mirror! I wore a simple but classic Stella York A-line gown, which had a bandeau neckline. I accessorised my look with some wonderful jewellery from my bridal party and husband-to-be.
“I wore a Marc Darcy three-piece suit in blue. I felt completely comfortable and knew I could have tried another 100 suits, but nothing would have compared. I finished the look with a tie in a Eldredge knot and elaborate buttonhole arrangement.” – Ben.
The bridesmaids wore long halter-neck dresses in blush pink.
41
House of Sax provided endless and memorable entertainment with an incredible and eclectic mix of a saxophonist coupled with a DJ – we would thoroughly recommend them.
The best man’s speech was hilarious! He prepared props, actresses and had endless confidence.
“A part that stood out the most to me was when Fran walked into the ceremony room, and everyone audibly gasped at how beautiful she was.” – Ben.
Thanks to the venue’s team, who kept the wheels turning on the day, the wedding couldn’t have been more perfect.
A big shout out to our photographer Carn Patrick, one of the friendliest and likeable people we have ever met. He is 100 per cent professional and provided us with a photo album that exceeded all of our expectations.

CAKES
BIG-DAY BAKES Our experts share popular cake trends for 2022 weddings
Calling all cake lovers! The year 2022 is shaping up to become an exciting and busy time for weddings. Here at Your North East Wedding, we’ve asked some of the top bakers from around the region to share hot and upcoming trends. Get ready to see some showstopping cakes with fun flavours and designs that are sure to wow your guests!
REBEKAH JACKSON AND BARBARA JACKSON | SHERBERT MOON Here at Sherbert Moon, we create a huge variety of different cake designs and can bring to life any ideas. From an initial sketch to an eye-catching cake, we look forward to making your dreams a reality. A cake must taste as amazing as it looks, so we’re always dreaming up new flavours and accommodating special requests from our couples. Here are a few upcoming trends for 2022 that are becoming more popular… ❤ Marble-finished tiers can add a colourful or subtle pop to a plain tier without unsettling the delicate balance of beautiful colours. ❤ Cut out tiers with bespoke floating inserts can add a wow factor to any cake, and an extra dummy tier gives height and elegance to the design. ❤ We love our invisible tiers of Perspex, which can be filled with flowers or left empty to give the cake a floating appearance. This looks stunning and classic while adding a modern twist and is often accentuated by having square tiers – another trend we will see more of. ❤ Let’s not forget about the elegant sugar flower sprays, which always make cakes look timeless. Check out: www.sherbertmoon.co.uk
HELEN EDWARDS | VANILLA TEAS We’ve seen a lot of beautiful-naked cakes over the past year and although that trend is going nowhere fast, we can expect to see cakes that are a little more dramatic this year. Marbled-effect cakes are stunning and can vary from a subtle palecoloured marble tier that transforms into a white cake, to a full-on bold design with rich dark colours and lashings of edible gold leaf. The gold pieces are another massive trend at the moment that adds a
fabulous effect, which I can’t get enough of it! Dessert tables will also be trending next year and couples can style them to suit any theme. Large or small feature cakes will look amazing while offering guests a delicious choice of tasty goodies such as miniraspberry trifles, which was very popular last year. Whatever you decide on, it’s not always about following trends and fashions. Just make sure you pick something you both love. Check out: www.vanillateas.co.uk

JENNIFER OLSEN | C & G CAKES Less is more for 2022 couples, and there’s a significant sway toward buttercream or semi-naked cakes at the moment, with each tier being a different flavour. Most cakes ordered are now sponges, and couples are replacing the old faithful vanilla and chocolate flavours with carrot, raspberry and white chocolate, lemon meringue and salted caramel ones. Next year’s popular colours are a mix of blush and dusky pinks, and weddings will feature plenty of foliage. Many different fruits will be added to cakes in the summer months, mostly strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. The sweet treat is perfect to use as desserts on your wedding day to save some money, and it means you won’t have to take a lot of time distributing the cake to friends, family and neighbours. The bake is a real centrepiece on the big day, and as our motto says, ‘a special occasion deserves a special cake’. Check out: www.candgcakes.com

Sage and blush shades have been popular in 2021 and this will continue this year, as well as gorgeous burgundy and copper hues. We will also be seeing a lot of beautiful dusty blue shades inspired by the TV show Bridgerton, and I can’t wait! Buttercream bakes are popular for boho and chic-themed weddings with white and gold accents. The addition of cakesicles, sugar cookies, brownies and Mars Bar Krispies will indulge guests. Another trend will be the use of wafer paper ruffles and Perspex tiers in many designs with lots of beautiful neutral shades. I love using fresh flowers in my designs, and we have some fantastic local florists in the North East. Beautiful pampas, bunny tails and palm leaves are a major feature for this year and adds a gorgeous texture to cakes. One of the most important aspects of a bake is the flavour. Many couples remember Cakes by Lottie McPhees from the Quayside Market, the little shop on Park View or Fenwicks department store. Each pair has a favourite flavour they want to share with their friends and family. Pistachio and rosewater were among the most requested flavours as well as pink gin in 2020. Last year was about raspberry and white chocolate chip cakes, followed by spiced orange
and cranberry carrot. This year, I’m going to be adding some new additions to my selection, including chocolate millionaire, tropical Malibu and passion fruit with Prosecco buttercream and a lime twist. Keep things fun for 2022 and 2023 weddings! Check out: www.cakesbylottiemcphees.co.uk

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

Q&A Achieve your dream wedding look with help from the experts
BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL What are your top beauty tips to get me looking my best? In the 12 months running up to your wedding, I always advise clients to get into a regular and targeted skincare routine. Great skin will help your make-up artist ensure your base is as flawless as possible for the special day. Invest in products tailored to address any issues you struggle with, such as dryness, blackheads, or pigmentation – a monthly facial treatment in a salon is also beneficial. Always remember to include your neck and décolletage area in your skincare routine, as these regions will benefit from a little tender loving care and are often on show in wedding dresses. Once you get within a few weeks of your date, don’t make any changes to your routine or try new products. It’s a time for sticking to what you know and not giving your skin any surprises that may break you out before the big day. Finally, and most importantly, drink plenty of water, eat well, rest and try to reduce any stress. Taking care of yourself will help you look and feel your best once the wedding day arrives.

LOOKING YOUR BEST I’m getting married at 40 and have a few fine lines and wrinkles. How can I best conceal these on my wedding day without looking caked in make-up? Fine lines and wrinkles aren’t something that make-up can change. The key to making your skin look its best is to keep it hydrated and plump by drinking plenty of water and using a hyaluronic acid serum. In terms of make-up, using light layers of each product is best to avoid that cakey look. A foundation and concealer with radiant finishes will create a luminous effect, while disguising any fine lines. Josephine Schaapkens | Josephine Birkett Makeup Artist www.josephinebirkett.com 67

AL FRESCO WEDDINGS
We’re planning to have an outdoor celebration, but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas? If you’re looking for a chilled and laid-back wedding infused with fabulous food, live music and a fire cracking atmosphere, then an outdoor wedding could be for you! Some people assume that hosting an outdoor event will not be within their budget, but this wedding style couldn’t be more fun and gives you the ultimate freedom to embrace everything, including the weather. After identifying the style you want to create, decide what structure you’re after. There are many options from teepees, circus tents, classic marquees, and modern glass domes that scream elegance. Don’t worry if you need power, as a generator and luxury bathrooms can be added. Once you have found the perfect setting, consider how the spaces can function on the day. The next thing to consider is the catering options, including the menu and the dining experience you want guests to have – this could be relaxed street food, a roaring barbecue or formal dining. Remember that entertainment is vital in creating the perfect day; imagine a live band, ceilidh, or a DJ banging out tunes into the early hours of the morning. If the idea of planning and pulling everything together stresses you out,
timings on the day. Don’t forget the most important end goal of this whole experience, which is to have fun, get married, and make everlasting memories! Aside from the venue playing a significant part in your day, it’s equally important that you feel relaxed and trust your wedding coordinator, who will help organise your special day and be your point of contact throughout the planning process. We’re just starting our wedding journey, but neither of us has a clue what we should look for when booking a venue. What advice can you share with us? There’s a lot to consider when looking at a wedding venue, and it’s important to make sure that the property meets all of your requirements. For example, is the size of the wedding spaces appropriate for your number of guests and is it within budget? You’ll need to find out if the venue has a ceremony license, what decorations are offered and the

We’re looking at booking a wedding entertainer, but we’re worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. Do you have any suggestions? Some businesses on Facebook allow clients to leave reviews and have testimonials on their website from past couples, which are both important to read. Most entertainers have videos or recordings of their performances prepared as examples of their work. I have a YouTube channel I link prospective clients to, which I’ve found very helpful to them. Some companies also do in-person meetings, which is worth checking if you’re worried about booking someone online. Many entertainers also do shows and have residentials in venues; check to see if they have any shows around your local area as this is an excellent opportunity to get see them live. Another thing to put your mind at ease is if another business has recommended the company, which often means they’re worth booking. Nicola Sim | Nicola Sim Pianist www.facebook.com/nicolasimpianist
DRESSED TO IMPRESS
www.agnesblack.com
https://abbiesizerphotography.co.uk
I’ve bought a dress with no embellishments, and now I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I add the wow factor to it? The simplest and non-permanent solution to add the wow factor to a dress would be the addition of a lace bolero and a crystal or beaded belt. Both are very on-trend and create an elegant look without much trouble and expense. These items can be added or removed to give a different look for the evening reception. A more permanent solution would involve sewing. The dress fabric and structure will need to support any additional weight, and a local bridal seamstress will explain what’s achievable. She may source some bridal appliqués and co-ordinating lace to decorate the gown. The difficulty of ordering materials online yourself is ensuring it’s of good quality and matches your dress’s fabric. Another option would be to sew tiny pearls or crystals onto selected parts of the bodice on a brocade or lace fabric to highlight the design and differentiate it from the skirt. You can combine this with a pearl or diamanté trim around the seam of the waist. Norma Arthur | Amble Pin Cushion www.amblepincushion.co.uk
YOUR TYPE ON PAPER
What styles and designs are set to be popular in 2022? Sustainability is a major trend throughout wedding planning in 2022, and this includes stationery. Most save-the-date pieces and invitations are made using card, but couples are opting for recycled materials or plantable seed paper as an alternative. Other trends will be the use of vellum paper, which adds a soft and modern touch to stationery and its versatility allows it to be used alone or teamed up with a wax seal or other embellishments. There are more requests for simple-style stationery with modern calligraphy, fuss-free detailing, extra white space and the use of a single bold colour to make the stationery pop. NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT
CAUGHT ON CAMERA
We’re thinking of booking a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips? Don’t rely on booking the cheapest companies as we often hear many stories that couples are desperately searching for a videographer close to their wedding as they’ve been let down by the company they originally booked. These stories usually involve someone offering a ‘really good deal’. Do your homework and check out the company’s work online and compare it to others. You shouldn’t have shaky footage nowadays with stabilisers in cameras and editing programs that reduce shudder – you don’t have to compromise on quality. Check if the trailers the company has made are original and are not staged in the same format. When watching the videos, does it make you emotional? This is usually a good sign as there’s a great chance that the videographer knows how to construct a film that you’ll love to have. Before booking a company, check what’s included in the packages and that you’re getting value for money. Allan Sizer | Strike a Pose Wedding Movies https://strikeaposeweddingmovies.co.uk

The Wedding Wardrobe had been in existence for around 20 years before Tracey Whelan bought the business from the owners who were retiring. She says, “We wanted to build on the fantastic reputation of the company, while adding our own personal stamp.” In 2016, the property undertook a huge refurbishment and reopened in September, ready to provid the perfect setting for brides. Since then, the team has added new designers to the existing collections, including Maggie Sottero, Morilee, The House of Nicholas Bridalwear, The Dessy Group and Romantica Pure, as well as a wide range of accessories. Let me eat cake!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
A
s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.
JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier
design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
78
Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are
entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.
To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!
Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.
I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.
Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.
I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.
My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.
Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.
The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels. 79

DO NOT DISTURB
OASIS OF CALM
A careful renovation has preserved features while adding in contemporary comforts in both the white-bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings that make up this Berkshire-based YTL Hotels property. It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Barn Rooms, located off the island adjacent to the private residences, offer a great option for wedding guests equipped with marble en suite bathrooms and walk-in showers.
The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. A must-try is The Floating Massage by Moss of the Isles performed while lying on an aqua cushion, giving the illusion you’re floating on a cloud of warm water.
MADE FOR ROMANCE Weddings take place in a choice of elegant function suites located in the Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. There’s direct access to a private patio area with a firepit and couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can enjoy the foliage-clad gazebo with guests seated outside on the lawn. The Art Deco-inspired Marlborough Ballroom
THEMED VENUES
with a statement botanical chandelier, mirrored panelling and doors leading to the manicured grounds hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, and both this and the River Room can be hired exclusively. There’s also the option of securing a marquee for up to 300 guests from the hotel’s list of preferred suppliers, and exclusive use of the entire estate can be booked. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.
A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.
Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.
WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
