ello lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your North East Wedding. It’s fair to say that the last 18 months have been an emotional roller coastal for us all. The lockdowns, restrictions and uncertainties have been challenging, but I’ve never been prouder of the wedding industry. It’s been moving to witness the community coming together to support each other during such a difficult time. With the lifting of restrictions, whoops and cheers, there’s a fantastic buzz in the world of weddings and it truly is the perfect time to plan your special day. As we’re reaching the end of summer, I’m excited to see autumnal nuptials take place with popular themes including rustic, boho, vintage or country-style weddings. We will be seeing plenty of warm-colour palettes being used with burnt orange, burgundy, brown and beige shades. It’s such a beautiful time of year to exchange vows and Christmas is just around the corner – sorry, I couldn’t help but slip that in there! If you’re on the hunt for local suppliers, you’re in luck because we’ve searched high and low to find trustworthy companies. In this wonderful issue, you’ll find stellar advice, top tips and inspiration to help you plan the perfect day. From beauty experts, stunning venues, florists, cake bakers and more – we’ve got you covered!

FIVE MINUTES WITH...

This issue, we caught up with Graeme King at Fizz On The Tyne. What does the company offer couples? I started the business five years ago to follow my passion for hosting events and my love of Italy. Here at Fizz On The Tyne, we cater for absolutely anything that involves a drink including weddings, corporate events and house parties – you name it, we’ll do it! What makes the business stand out? Wow your guests with our beautiful Prosecco van after the “I dos”, which

always gets lots of attention. We offer couples a range of packages such as our popular fizz/lager package for reception drinks and our amazing, friendly staff are on-hand to ensure a smooth service. The favourite part of my job is speaking and interacting with customers and guests – I’m a right chatterbox! How long before the wedding should couples book your service? It’s always best to book our company early to avoid disappointment. But if we’re free on your date, we’ll be there to make your day special! What advice can you share with couples planning their special day? Make sure you leave no stone unturned and get in early with suppliers to make sure you book them on your chosen date. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and take it all in! Discover more about the company: www.fizzonthetyne.co.uk

This issue is pack with beautiful inspiration and when I first saw the images from Dale and Christie’s special day, I knew the wedding would be perfect for our readers! The pair created the most beautiful day at South Causey Inn, a traditional countryside property set in 100 acres of beautiful grounds, and were surrounded by their loved ones. The wedding took place on 4th June 2021, and DJM Photography captured the most beautiful images. The part that really stood out about the day was the first dance. Due to Covid-19, the pair needed to become creative and work around the restrictions in place. Darren their photographer had an amazing idea to have the first dance outside to meet requirements. The bride says, “Dancing under the sunset surrounded by candles, trees, family and friends was just amazing and stood out the most to me. All our suppliers were amazing, but Darren definitely stood out. He was superb from morning till night and captured every part of our day in an amazing style.” Flick to page 33 to read move about their wedding! 10

01912 306 300 | www.newcastlecastle.co.uk Located in the heart of the city, Newcastle Castle is one of the UK’s finest surviving examples of a Norman stone keep. Built in 1178, the sandstone building has been well maintained by staff over the centuries; its crenulations, turrets and Victorian additions provide evidence of the buildings original use. All rooms in Newcastle Castle are special in terms of their architectural features, atmosphere and historical connections. The venue offers exclusive hire packages and the hardworking team will be there every step of the way to help couples create their dream day. The Black Gate is home to both ceremony rooms at the venue; the Harbottle Suite has many 17th-century features and can accommodate 50 loved ones, while The Museum Room is perfect for intimate nuptials with 30 guests. DUNS CASTLE

01361 883 211 | www.dunscastle.co.uk Located in 1800-acres, Duns Castle is an exclusive-use wedding venue in Durham that dates back to 1320. The castle sits within a nature reserve with a beautiful lake, different wildlife species, extensive lawns, forest trails and areas for bespoke activities. The celebrated architect James Gillespie Graham remodelled the castle’s exterior in 1820; he added a gothic-revival style with castellated turrets, a series of gargoyles and a crown arch. The grand entrance makes the perfect backdrop to wedding photography, with two eagles standing guard on either side of the door and a stone staircase leading guests to the main rooms. 18

occur on the roof with 45 nearest and dearest who can enjoy the stunning views of the River Tyne, the whole city and beyond. Wedding breakfasts take place in the Great Hall with 50 guests and couples can continue their celebrations with 80 throughout the castle in rooms such as The Gaol, where prisoners were once held captive, and The Chapel. Imagine walking through the ceremonial doors into the atmospheric Great Hall with its 43ft high-arched ceiling, rusticsandstone walls, dominating windows and a centrepiece fireplace. Couples can use the antechambers for bars, buffets, chill out areas and more. On the property, The Castle Garth is a historic haven surrounded by buildings that demonstrate the centuries and industries of growth of Newcastle. The surviving rustic walls, the tree-shadowed Black Gate and the grassy moat provide excellent options for wedding photos.

The blank-canvas spaces allow couples to get creative and plan a day that matches their colour scheme and wedding theme.

Ceremonies for up to 60 people usually happen in the main Drawing Room, a large area with impressive-bowed windows, a fireplace and a detailed cornice. A stunning mirror, which almost reaches the ceiling, is the main focal point of the space with carved-wooden figures adorning each side. Alternatively, the “I dos” and receptions can take place on the lawn in front of the castle, weather permitting, and a marquee is also an option for larger weddings. Intimate receptions occur in the Drawing Room or the Grand Hall, which is an impressive space with a vaulted ceiling and bar area.

The castle sleeps up to 55 among its 12 bedrooms and holiday cottages, which means loved ones can retreat to comfort after dancing the night away!

REAL WEDDINGS

B

ethany and Adam’s exciting journey started online on a dating site. After messaging back and forth, the pair realised they shared many mutual friends and couldn’t believe they’d never met before. One Friday afternoon, Bethany and Adam decided to have drinks together in Newcastle and discovered that they shared a strong bond. Bethany says, “We were both single-parents and ended up visiting different soft plays with the boys, while getting to know each other better. After a few days out, the boys were inseparable and so were we!” At the start of January 2020, Adam decided to propose at Bamburgh Beach with Bamburgh Castle in the background. Bethany comments, “Adam managed to sneak a bottle of champagne inside his jacket onto the beach; he must have been quite confident I was going to say yes and of course I did!”

SETTING THE SCENE When planning their wedding, the pair ensured the day would perfectly represent them both and be full of laughter. The original plan was to say “I do” a year after they got engaged, but Covid-19 restrictions meant that the date had to be changed twice and a new venue needed to be selected. Bethany says, “Our priorities changed from wanting to have this perfect wedding to just wanting to be married.” After booking Hexham House for the ceremony, the restrictions started to ease and allowed the couple to have a reception in the evening. Beaumont Hotel was the perfect option with a private dining room, The Sele View, which had just become available and the couple were over-the-moon. Bethany stayed in the apartments within Hexham House the night before the wedding with her bridesmaid, mum and youngest son. Adam travelled to the wedding in a relative’s Lamborghini, which was a dream come true! The bride’s bouquet looked incredible on the day and featured a mixture of burgundy and blush tones with proteas as the main feature, plus some eucalyptus and olive branches too. The florist, Laura at Peony & Gold Floral Design, did an excellent job and stayed in touch with the couple throughout the process while discussing different options. The bridesmaid had a matching but smaller bouquet, while the groom and best man had blush buttonholes to contrast with their suits. The couple were restricted to 30 guests and could only have two households per table for the reception. They ended up opting for a sweetheart table for themselves, two tables for both the bride and groom’s family and then a table for friends. Each guest could find their seat via wooden, laser-cut place names. Peony + Gold Floral Design created a table runner using foliage interspersed with flowers and it trailed beautifully off the end of the tables. There was also rose-gold candlesticks and tall-taper candles on each table, which created such a romantic atmosphere. Each adult guest received heart-shaped flower seed favours that said ‘let love grow’ while the little ones received activity packs filled with crayons, colouring books, glow sticks, sweet treats and a couple of small toys to keep them entertained throughout the wedding breakfast and speeches. A lovely touch on the day were two wooden signs purchased on Etsy saying, “We finally welcome you to our wedding.” When it came to the wedding cake, Bethany baked a three-tiered sponge and decorated it with blush butter-cream icing, rose-gold leaves, fresh flowers provided by the florist and a cake topper. The couple provided canapés as guests arrived at the reception to keep them from going hungry, followed by a main course and dessert for the wedding breakfast. In the evening, guests could dig into some bacon sandwiches and potato wedges.

LOOKING THE PART When it came to finding a wedding dress, the bride knew she didn’t want a traditional-styled gown and discovered the perfect option on Monsoon’s website called Vera. Bethany says, “I loved the cape, the laid-back style, the satin fabric and the long-flowing train – I’d never seen a dress like it before.” After realising Monsoon stocked dresses in their stores, the bride-to-be and her

21

mum dashed over to find the gown. She comments, “The lady in the shop was amazing; she ushered us into the big personal changing room and grabbed the dress, shoes and two glasses of Prosecco.” Bethany knew it was the one straight away and had the dress altered twice by a local seamstress to ensure the perfect fit. She finished off the look with white-leather Converses, a Jenny Packham bag, earrings, a hair vine and a gold CARET* London bracelet that was a wedding present from her husband-to-be. The groom looked dashing in a dark blue and burgundy suit from Master Debonair; the team was so helpful and made the process much easier. He opted for a shirt with burgundy piping, a tie and a pocket square to bring everything together. Adam’s brother Connor was his best man, he wore a suit and a contrasting waistcoat from Suit Culture. After initially not intending to match, he and Adam ended up with almost identical suits! Both Adam and Bethany’s sons looked adorable on the day; Isaac escorted the bride down the aisle while Reece was a mini best man. There was only one bridesmaid on the day, Bethany’s sister, who wore a beautiful silk dress in a dark purple/ burgundy shade, a pair of Converse and a bracelet that the bride bought her as a thank you gift.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple were so excited to finally be Mr and Mrs, it truly was the best day of their lives. After the difficult task of planning their wedding, Bethany and Adam were both so excited to see all their plans unfold and share the day with their children and loved ones. She says, “We were both extremely nervous the night before and on the morning of the wedding, I was watching from the window as people were arriving and getting more anxious by the minute.” The couple were worried about walking through the park after the ceremony to their reception venue, but this ended up being one of the highlights of the day. Having quality time together with just their photographer was so precious to them. Many companies worked hard to make the day extra special. Bethany says, “Our suppliers were amazing and everyone managed to accommodate us when our dates moved around. Our photographer Tom really stood out, he was amazing with the kids and we didn’t want him to go home!”

HONEYMOON After having two honeymoons cancelled due to the pandemic, the couple decided to say local and visited The Studio at Shellbraes Holiday Rental in Northumberland for two nights. The bride says, “The space is owned by the same company who runs the apartments at Hexham House. After the wedding, we headed straight to the cottage and were greeted by just married bunting and champagne.” She adds, “We finished our minimoon with a spa day at Ramside Hall Hotel before heading home to the boys.” The lovebirds are planning a belated honeymoon in the sunshine for their first wedding anniversary.

lenn was celebrating his 30th birthday in Newcastle when he first met Vanessa, who sang happy birthday to him before they exchanged numbers. Six months after their official meeting, Glenn got in touch to ask her on a date and they headed to Lumiere festival in Durham – they’ve been inseparable since that day! On Sunday 30th August 2020, Glenn surprised Vanessa by asking to marry her in Alnmouth. She says, “The location has always been our special place where we visited a lot and would take Glenn’s Grandma – so it holds a special meaning to us.” Glenn had always wanted to go there for a late-night walk and the pair set off one Sunday for what Vanessa thought was just another walk – but she was so wrong! She comments, “Glenn stopped by a row of colourful houses and got down on one knee to ask me to marry him – I was in shock, but I immediately said yes.” She adds, “We then had a walk along the beach; the sky was amazingly full of stars and a full moon.” Here Vanessa share details about their special day...

ale and Christie first met at school, but they didn’t become friends until they reconnected 14 years later. He thought Christie was beautiful and was attracted to her amazing, loving and caring personality above anything else. His ability to make her laugh no matter what was going on in their lives was so special. Christie says, “I couldn’t believe how good looking he had gotten since our school days!” Dale proposed on the beach near The Little Haven Hotel in South Shields back in 2019. The area is where they visited many times in the early stages of their relationship; the quiet atmosphere always allowed them to spend quality time together. While Christie was on holiday in Portugal with her older sister Lauren, Dale took the time to ask her dad’s permission to marry his daughter and planned the perfect proposal. The pair set out for a meal once she’d returned home before walking to the beach where he popped the question. She says, “It was a massive surprise – I had no idea at all!” The date was set for June 4th 2021, and the pair created a day full of love and laughter. Here Christie shares details about their wedding… 33

The venue had an amazing array of centrepieces and table decorations to choose from; we went for a quite simplistic look to suit our style with candles and flowers matching our colour scheme.

Our wedding favours were old school mixtapes in memory of my grandma, who would buy me one every week for as long as I can remember.

We’re both not huge cake lovers and gave the task of sorting it out to my sister Lauren. Knowing we love a laugh, she opted for both a Mr and Mrs caterpillar cake and a sausage dog one to represent our pooch – we couldn’t have asked for anything better!

Our table plan, place names and table names were made by Above the Clouds Wedding Stationery. The team were brilliant, even though we rearrange our wedding last minute due to Covid-19.

The Old Barn at South Causey Inn is a stunning, private location with amazing scenery and fairytale-like trees.

I had a mixture of fresh lilac, lavender, rose, lisianthus and gypsophila for my bouquet, while my bridesmaids each had a smaller version with roses and gypsophila. 34

The two bridesmaids, Katherine and my sister Lauren each wore a mauve-coloured multiway dress. The style allowed them to change the neckline throughout the day, which the girls loved.

REAL WEDDINGS

After shopping at Brides Dream in Newcastle, I found a dress by the designer Morilee that suited my body shape really well and I felt so comfortable – this was a big requirement. Everyone commented on my dress throughout the day.

ho After rearranging our wedding date and having fewer numbers due to restrictions, we decided to reduced our food options. Guests had a choice of confit duck leg or cajun chicken strips to start, lamb shank with all the trimmings or roast garlic chicken breast in a wild-mushroom sauce for the main and a chocolate brownie or a cheese board for dessert.

The groom wore a grey suit from Slater Menswear with a lilac tie and a pair of tan brogues from Eves & Grey. The best man, Dale’s younger brother Hayden, and my dad Eric wore the same suit and tie.

ds

Mark Deeks Music played the piano throughout our ceremony, wedding breakfast and reception. We both enjoy music and he could play pretty much anything you ask for – we had a variety of songs from AC/DC and Wheatus to Ed Sheeran.

We had Barrie James Art do caricaturist sketches of our guests, which had everyone laughing all night! Barrie is so amazing and gave us a framed married-couple sketch, which was so special. 35

We would both like to say how amazing and professional the team at South Causey Inn is. They always made us feel at ease and did everything possible to help, especially with Covid-19 regulations and rearranging our dates. The wedding team is a real credit to the whole business.

Our first dance was a moment from the day that really stood out. Darren at DJM Photography had a fantastic idea of dancing outside so people could join in while meeting any regulations in place. Dancing surrounded by candles, trees and loved ones in the sunset was just amazing!

We both felt emotional on the day and Dale cried a little bit, which is very unusual. We love each other so much and felt lucky to be surrounded by our family and friends, despite having to rearrange our big day previously.

We were both unsure of how Hayden’s best man speech was going to turn out, but it couldn’t have been better. Everyone was laughing while Dale sat with his head in his hands – exactly how it’s meant to be.

All our suppliers were terrific; our photographer Darren stood out and was superb from morning till night. He captured every part of our day while making us both feel at ease; his creativity and ideas are second to none.

I have a great love for many avenues of photography, including portrait fashion, street and location. This has enabled me to produce stylish, sophisticated imagery, as well as maintaining a natural/candid feel. From the moment we booked there was constant communication and updates. Adam let us know what would be happening up until and on our special day. We worked out a schedule and went from there. Not only are the photographs stunning but the service received was just brilliant. I’d highly recommend Adam to anyone wanting a top class photographer. REGIONAL SHOOT

Local suppliers got together to create this boho-themed shoot Images courtesy of AJPhotography.UK

W

ith a demand for intimate weddings due to the pandemic, Susanne Shah at Rosa Bridal Boutique wanted to demonstrate to couples how they can have a beautiful, laid-back reception and selected talented suppliers from around the region to take part. Located in Durham, Beamish Glamping not only provided the perfect backdrop for the day, but its blank canvas allowed the team to get creative. The suppliers styled The Barn, the glass Summer House and the Glamping Pods with Persian rugs, florals, vases, candles, cushions, chandeliers and carved-wood décor, which looked fantastic against the spaces. Susanne says, “We were able to create an amazing set of images and the venue’s owners were completely shocked as to how the spaces could be styled and now have many options going forward for weddings.”

ANYONE FOR TEA?

Toner, often the forgotten skincare routine step, is actually hugely beneficial. It can help with breakouts, remove the last traces of make-up, eliminate excess oil, help balance the skin’s pH levels, soothe and refresh. So, check out the new Q+A Green Tea Daily Toner (£8). Ideal for everyone, especially those with stressed-out skin, it’s packed full of antioxidants that protect from environmental damage. One in particular, EGCG, can even rejuvenate dying skin cells to restore and repair skin. Green Tea itself is rich in vitamin E, a moisturising ingredient known to minimise signs of ageing, amongst myriad other benefits. Check out www.qandaskin.com

Look a-brow-zing on your big day with the help of Kevyn Aucoin True Feather Brow Duo. Your eyes are the window to the soul that your partner fell in love with so why not frame them with the perfect brow? This dualended make-up marker helps to shape and set for a flattering and natural look. At one end you’ll find a precision brush tip that allows you to create hair-like strokes and fill in sparse areas, while blending in seamlessly. At the other end is an invisible gel infused with mung bean and red clover extract, a formula that aids healthy hair growth while providing a flexible hold. The highly-anticipated new fragrance from Ghost, Orb of Night Eau de Parfum, is the perfect scent to transport you to a warm, romantic summer evening. It’s described as a woody floriential with top notes of mandarin, cherry almond and bergamot, with a heart of freesia, orange blossom, ylang ylang and jasmine. So, if you’re looking for your signature big-day fragrance head to Superdrug, Boots, The Fragrance Shop or The Perfume Shop and see if it’s the one. THAT’S A WRAP

The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. I absolutely love mine – it’s taken the stress out of washing my hair in more ways than one. Check out www.aquishair.co.uk where the AQUIS Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is priced at £30. 66

SILKY SMOOTH

Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. This Is Silk Cleansing Cloths in Noir are £21.99 for three at https://thisissilk.com

PERFECT PREP

Award-winning and cruelty-free make-up brand Milani Cosmetics has introduced the Rose Prep + Prime range to Boots and Beauty Bay. It’s all about nourishing and replenishing your skin for a radiant complexion and dewy glow. I’m a fan of the lip treatment products in particular, which were game-changers for me! The Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (£13.75) comes first in the pamper session, polishing dry and chapped areas for an ultra-soft and smooth pout. Follow with The Rose Butter Lip Mask (£13.75), which contains hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture. Your lipstick will look perfect on the day and your bridal make-up artist will love you for doing all the prep for them! These little heroes are available at www.milanimakeup.co.uk

Be beautiful

BE YOU

Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty

Tim McBaj

It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.

B

orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 68

liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!

Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant

and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.

“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and

sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

Huda Beauty Glow Obsessions Highlighter Palette £27, www.boots.com “For all those glamorous brides-to-be, this is the perfect product to define your features and achieve that gorgeous glow. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson

GLOW UP!

Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 70

Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews

Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey

Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson

Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best

TIMELESS ELEGANCE I want a glamorous hollywood-style look for my big day. How can I achieve this? Hollywood glamour is a wedding look that suits opulent ceremonies, elegant gowns, glittering décor and lavish locations. The feature that’s most associated with this style is a bold red or burgundy lip and remember, it’s important to keep the rest of the make-up clean and flawless when you’re wearing a statement lip. The skin should be prepped and primed to create a smooth canvas for the foundation, and any under-eye darkness concealed to brighten and lift the eyes.

Blusher can compete with the lip and therefore, it’s usually kept to a minimum, while bronzer gives a softer and more modern combination. Eye make-up for this genre tends to be simple and soft while focusing on a defined lashline and lashes. Winged eyeliner can create a more fifties-vintage style if that’s what you’re after. Otherwise, a soft wash of neutral gold or beige shimmer across the lid, a pretty fluffy lash and a naturally defined brow will complete the look. Lyndsey Morgan | Lyndsey Morgan Makeup www.lyndseymorgan-makeup.co.uk

HAIRTASTIC I need some ideas for a bridal hairstyle that can be worn up for my late-summer wedding, what can you suggest? A relaxed, soft hairstyle is best for a late-summer wedding. Go for what I would describe as a ‘fairy vibe’ by adding some flowers to match the look, gypsophila or a mix of blooms that match the bouquet works well. Keep the front of the hair swept back with loose waves and soft-wispy strands falling around your face. A soft make-up look works great with this hairstyle; natural eyes and sun-kissed skin will look gorgeous in those golden-hour shots! Depending on the veil, I would keep the back of the hair quite simple and messy rather than having set curls in an up do. The aim is for your locks to looks like it’s been swept up and twisted; any loose waves that fall out will naturally add to the overall look. Amy Tombling | All Dolled Up www.alldolledupamy.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

MAKE A TOAST

My hubby-to-be and I are considering hiring a drinks van for our upcoming nuptials, but we’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of options available. What should we take into consideration before booking? Before you book a supplier, take some time to consider different options and look at what’s available in your area. There are lots of choices out there that are all very different. Think about how many drinks per person you’ll need and whether you want a fizz or a lager option or if you desire

multiple choices. Ensure your venue allows a drinks van and that there’s plenty of space for the vehicle to get in and out of the property easily. Next, consider what kind of van will match your theme and venue. If you’re looking for a drinks van that will provide fantastic fizz and be a gorgeous addition to your venue and photos, then Fizz on the Tyne is the one for you! YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY

We’ve just started wedding planning and I’m slightly confused about what a celebrant does, can you help? When couples get engaged, they often believe having a religious or civil ceremony are their only choices – but there’s actually a third option available. A celebrant-led wedding is becoming more popular because, unlike a registrar, you can choose any celebrant who you feel comfortable around. More importantly, there are no restrictions as to what you can or can’t include. You have the freedom and flexibility to create a ceremony that encapsulate your style and personality perfectly. Having a celebrant-led ceremony is perfect for couples wanting to tie the knot under the stars, at sunrise/sunset or on a beach. But it’s important to note that this style of ceremony does not include legally binding in England and Wales. For a couple to legalise their marriage, they must book an appointment to visit their local registry office to register their marriage, like you would for a birth or death. I’m happy to explain this process and prices fully to couples before they decide to book. Gemma Jay | North East Celebrant www.northeastcelebrant.com 73

A DAY TO REMEMBER

My fiancé recently proposed, but I don’t know where to start with the planning. What’s the first thing I need to book and what should I consider after that? Planning your wedding is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable experience, so don’t get distracted by others and their opinions. Just take into consideration what you both want and go for it! Start planning by deciding what type of ceremony and location suits your vision. Do you want a church service, a civil ceremony (legal but non-religious) or a celebrant-led one, which is not legally recognised and would require a registry office service? Once this decision has been made, the reception venue is easier to choose. It’s reasonable for the venue to be up to 20 minutes away if you’re having a church wedding and this can narrow down the geographical area for your search. If you have a civil marriage, the local registrars will have lists of approved premises and think about what’s important to you both to make things easier. Do you need accommodation onsite, do you want a classic venue or a rustic barn? There are many options here, so it’s worth investing some time looking at websites and photos from local venues before you start making appointments. Knowing your guest list will help rule out venues that are too small or big. Once the venue’s booked, you can then begin to look for other suppliers. The best companies from around the region will get booked up years in advance, but many couples don’t realise that they can reserve a supplier’s time without knowing the full details of your day – you just need the basic information. Start with the photographer, florist, cake company and then look for entertainment during the day and for the evening reception. A good wedding planner can advise couples with local, reliable wedding suppliers to make the planning process as enjoyable and as stress-free as possible. SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS

My wife-to-be and I love strong flavours and want something unusual for our cake. Do you have any suggestions for us? My most unusual flavour is spiced clementine, which was inspired by my lovely friend Suzanne at Cove Cake Design. The fruity sponge is infused with star anise plus cinnamon and it’s a flavour that most people wouldn’t have tried before but are pleasantly surprised when they do. It’s great to have something a bit different at your wedding rather than your standard Victoria sponge. Make sure to pick flavours that appeal to you and your partner – don’t try and please everyone because it’s your special day. Some of my couples enquire about a fruit cake, even though they dislike it, to provide for their older crowd. But your loved ones will be just as happy with a delicious sponge cake, especially if it’s something they haven’t tried before. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

We’re planning our wedding entertainment, but we’re a bit worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. Do you have any suggestions? Picking your wedding entertainment should be a fun and enjoyable experience. Try to give yourselves a few months before the special day to work out the type of entertainment you want, meet suppliers and make that final decision. It’s great to meet people in person, but the last few months have highlighted the benefits of virtual catch-ups. It’s often hard to have a decent chat at a busy wedding fair, so it’s always good to catch up on FaceTime, WhatsApp or over Zoom. Here you can ask all the questions you want and get to know the team more. Listen to the advice from the professionals because many entertainers have performed at different venues and have lots of experience. They’ll happily share what might or might not work for your day. Make sure to ask newlyweds for their recommendations. The entertainment world is ruled by word of mouth and if someone comes highly recommended, they’ll most probably be good! Ask friends, people you know, your venue, other nearlyweds, wedding professionals and of course, use the internet. Think about whether the company’s appropriate for your setting, audience and the atmosphere you’re after. You might have guests in nappies to their nineties on the day, but the evening may be different. There are many entertainment options such as music in all forms, magicians, caricaturists, jugglers, balloon artists, children’s entertainers, photo booths and more. TOP TIP... Make sure the company you pick has Public Liability Insurance and any electrical equipment is PAT tested. Ray Snowdon | Ray’s Piano | www.rayspiano.co.uk

are Bridal Studio opened its doors back in July 2020, after realising there’s a gap in the bridal market in the North East. After moving from its previous location in Washington in Tyne and Wear, the company has since moved to Low Fell in Gateshead earlier this year. The new store is the perfect location for those searching for the one. The boutique offers cool, modern, alternative and bohostyled wedding attire and accessories by British designers, which couples can’t find anywhere else in the region. The studio provides a private, laid-back setting for brides and is open on an appointment basis only – meaning that clients are guaranteed the whole studio to themselves and the full attention from the experienced team. Once customers find the perfect gown, they can ensure the perfect fit using the companies in-house alteration service. The owner at Rare Bridal Studio, Jade Johnson, loves helping brides look and feel their big-day best. She says, “I leave the studio on such a high knowing that someone has gone home over-the-moon with their look and knowing that I was able to help them on their journey.” The team are currently seeing a huge demand for unusual lace patterns and dramatic sleeves; their boho-style gowns are the perfect option for this! ROSA BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

S

ituated in Newcastle, Rosa Bridal Boutique offers fabulous designer dresses significantly reduced from their recommended retail price. After opening its doors back in 2019, the team ensures that brides-to-be have a positive shopping experience while giving an honest opinion. The boutique’s owner, Susanne Shah, started the business after wanting a different pace of life with more time for friends and family. She loved her previous career as a lawyer but no longer wanted the long hours. Susanne decided opening the boutique would be perfect, especially after seeing a gap in the market. She says, “There was a need for brides to have somewhere that would still give them that personal one-to-one experience, without needing a top-end budget necessarily.” She adds, “My favourite part of the job is the actual appointments themselves. Living in a house full of males with my husband and two boys (even the cats are boys), I love being in the shop and having some real girly time. I don’t see my job as work because I enjoy it so much. Seeing my brides blossom before my eyes in confidence and demeanour when they find the one is such a joy.” The shop stocks a fantastic selection of gowns in different sizes (six to 26) and price ranges to cater for even more couples. Many customers who visit the boutique at the moment are asking for long sleeves, which is trending right now and works well for autumn/ winter weddings, and some clients are after general arm coverage. There’s also a demand for Bardot off-the-shoulder gowns, which is a sexy style that shows just a little bit of flesh while remaining relatively modest. When it comes down to finding that dream dress, it’s all about personal preference and style. Discover more: www.rosabridalboutique.co.uk

fter having a passion for hair styling since a young age, Amy Tombling created All Dolled Up eight years ago after creating hairstyles for herself and her sister for their cousin’s wedding. She says, “I styled my hair into a loose chignon and for my sister, I created a bow using her hair. We received plenty of compliments and that’s when I realised I could make a business from this!” A week after the wedding, Amy created three different looks and within a month of posting the pictures on social media, she had a booking every week. She decided to enrol in a part-time beauty college alongside her job at a doctors surgery and a few months later, All Dolled Up was born. The Middlesbrough-based business offers hair styling for bridal parties and can create amazing styles. After arriving before dawn, the company starts the wedding day prep and will stay until the last minute to put in the veil and add any finishing touches. Amy says, “There’s nothing better than seeing a bride’s vision come to life on her wedding day; I love to see the whole look come together with the hair, the make-up and the dress.” Over the last year, messy-fairytale

hairstyles have been popular, but there’s been a demand for elegant and simple looks at the moment with many asking for a loose chignon or a wrapped knot – of course Hollywood waves are a big thing this year. The team can create each one of these looks flawlessly

while adding a special touch. Amy says,“I love it when someone allows me to be creative, I let the hair flow naturally into a style and I see where the look leads me. This is a massive benefit because I’m not creating the same look over again.” The business has plenty of experience in the industry and can help point couples in the right direction for other suppliers, share top tips and create new ideas. Love is in the air

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.

FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

78

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them

and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Melissa. x

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.

Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.

How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.

Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.

The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.

To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.

To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 79
