hen my wedding photographer asked me what moments I’d love to capture on our big day, I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed. There’s so much about weddings that I adore that it’s hard to break down and put into a list. To help, I took inspiration from all the lovely real weddings I’ve seen over the years and my favourite moments, such as the vows and seeing your partner for the first time. After such a strange year for all of us, it’s nice to finally think about something positive and talk to wonderful suppliers who, like us, are happy that nuptials are getting back to normal. I’m so excited for the flurry of weddings and to see your pictures and share the happy moments with you all. To celebrate, we’ve put together a showstopping issue that’s full of inspiration. We have four real weddings, five styled shoots, the latest cake trends and a must-see music and entertainment guide. What’s more, our fashion section is full of fabulous boho and Hollywood-inspired dresses. YOUR ESSENTIALS

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU Happy Hampers, a company providing wedding favours in Blackpool, has started offering date night hampers for couples who have booked with them. The owner Daniella Moody tells us more: “Happy Hampers was founded in November 2019 as a way of earning some extra more money for myself. When COVID-19 hit the following year, sales began to boom as I offer trusted payment plans that are paid directly via bank; standing order or PayPal. Since then, I have registered officially as a sole trader expanding daily with new ideas and products while also working as a health care assistant. I offer couples a fully understanding service. There is no need to contact me professionally as I believe you get more out of the service and are better able to express your preferences while having a more casual chat. My favourite part of the job is meeting people from different walks of life and meeting their personalised requirements, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.” Visit www.facebook.com/groups/happyhampersblackpool

They’ve also worked alongside various artists such as Michael Ball and Sheridan Smith. The quartet is now offering a jukebox service at weddings. Anyone can choose a song to play, and it will be added to the group’s playlist. This offers a chance for some lovely interaction for you and your guests, as well as allowing you to hear a wide range of music from their repertoire. A LOVELY GESTURE

A SPECIAL GIFT As UK hotels and restaurants have started to welcome visitors back, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants have launched a new service using postcards to reconnect friends and loved ones who were kept apart by the pandemic. Specially designed Kimpton Stay Human postcards are available outside Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester and select neighbouring outlets, free of charge, to send to someone special to prompt plans for a meet-up. The postcards are also available to send digitally. Recipients can also redeem a special perk when they visit a Kimpton hotel in the UK and bring their Stay Human postcard with them. Tom Rowntree, the VP of global luxury brand marketing at IHG Hotels & Resorts, said, “We want to help people reconnect and make plans together through the simple but thoughtful act of sending a postcard. Creating heartfelt human connections is at the very core of the Kimpton brand, and from the outset of the pandemic, we have done this with our charitable partnerships, community outreach and now with these postcards. We hope people use them to reconnect in real life with those they’ve missed spending time with.” Head over to www.kimptonclocktowerhotel.com for more information.

To celebrate the return of the wedding season, Three Little Words in Manchester is offering its premises to couples for free! Manchester Gin’s owners Seb Heeley and Jen Wiggins met over their love for gin and tonic and have cancelled their wedding three times due to COVID-19 restrictions but are now looking forward to their new date in 2022. Jen tells us: “We know how difficult it is to secure a wedding venue with so many cancellations meaning that properties are booked up years in advance, leaving limited options for those who have missed out this past year. It’s the first time we have ever opened the doors to The Spirit of Manchester Distillery as a wedding reception venue, and we cannot wait to help couples create their special day. After several enquiries from customers, we decided to offer the space to couples for free, as we know too well, the financial burden the past year has had on couples due to be married. The arches and brickwork within The Spirit of Manchester Distillery will provide the perfect location for beautiful wedding shots, there’s nowhere else in the city quite like it. With an incredible team in the bar and kitchen, Three Little Words can deliver delicious food and drinks for you and your guests to create a night to remember. From cocktails and canapés to bubbly and a sit-down meal, to – of course – Manchester gin distilled on-site! We will help you design the perfect evening to celebrate your special day surrounded by your nearest and dearest as you dance, eat and enjoy life.” Terms and conditions apply. THE GREAT

outdoors

Eve and Jonny tied the knot in a fun-filled celebration at New House Farm Images courtesy of Jesse Knibbs Photography

E

ve and Jonny met at a theatre company in Germany. “Jonny was an actor, and I was a prop maker,” says Eve. “He was the second Northern person I’d ever met, so I thought of him as a bit of a celebrity. We got together one night on the dancefloor on the last weekend before Jonny embarked on a nine-month tour around Germany. I told him to stay in touch, and the rest is history.” Jonny popped the question during a Sunday morning stroll around Greenwich Park in 2017. “Our two friends were with us and suggested they take a photograph of us under a tree,” shares the bride. “When he proposed, I was very surprised and aghast for what felt like an eternity for Jonny, but I finally said yes. More of our friends were hiding in another area of the park with balloons, bunting and a picnic complete with personalised gingerbread men that looked like us.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

27

Since getting together, Jonny has introduced me to the magic of the Lake District. We wanted to commemorate our union as well as share the beauty of the Lakes with our guests who had never been there before. We loved New House Farm’s rustic décor, rich character and furnishings. We never wanted a massive or overly fancy wedding, and it was important for the venue to feel authentic. We were very drawn to Hazel from New House Farm, who welcomed us so warmly and made the possibility of a simple and understated wedding a reality.

Jonny’s aunties live in Scotland and Yorkshire and are avid walkers. They collected sloes which they turned into gorgeous bottles of sloe gin for our favours.

I painted a board black and dressed it with brightly coloured clipboards for our table plan.

For our flowers, we chose roses, eucalyptus and lots of foliage from Floral Boutique. We hired a Land Rover Defender from B Spoke By Spike as our transport.

My brother created a tiered cake stand out of reclaimed wood. We decided not to have a fancy bake and instead opted for a dessert from Wild Zucchinis Bistro that we presented before the dinner so we could take a few cutting pictures. 28

REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids opted for multi-way dresses from Marks & Spencer, which they paired with silver jewellery and heels. I wore a Catherine Deane dress called Jo from Exquisite Brides. It had a lace bodice and a diaphanous silk chiffon skirt. I accessorised with an ornate headpiece featuring star and leaf motifs, a pendant and small pearl earrings.

We had some of our dear friends perform on guitars and ukuleles. We also played a medley of songs as we’re both very musical and love live music. It seemed to go down well, and we loved getting to see our talented friends shine and come together. Jonny chose a Master Debonair suit complete with a waistcoat. He liked it because it was unlike any outfit he’d seen before. The fabric was herringbone in a medium blue, which he paired with a blush tie and pocket square.

To keep the children entertained, we had lots of garden games like limbo, Connect 4 and Swingball.

We felt overwhelmed, deeply in love and very thankful to have such a wonderful day.

29

There were so many wonderful moments, I laughed so much when we had our wedding photos taken and had a sing-along to Tenacious D on the dancefloor in the evening. Seeing all our friends and family dancing was amazing. I also remember the moment my anxiety melted away when I saw Jonny standing at the end of the aisle.

Hazel, the owner of New House Farm, was exceptional! Nothing was too much trouble, and it felt fine to ask any questions we had. The best men’s speech was also wonderful. They got everyone laughing, and it was timed to perfection.

One of our friends went for a nap under a table with a pizza and his cockapoo!

For our honeymoon, we went to Amsterdam for three nights and then spent another three in Ireland. We loved doing karaoke, a pizza cruise and enjoying a gig in Dublin. I organised everything but forgot to book the return flights from Ireland!

H

annah and Harry have known each other since they were children. “We went to primary school together and met again when we were 19,” says Hannah. “After some persistence from Harry, I agreed to go on a date with him, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.” Harry proposed during a holiday to Berlin. “We were on our way to a Liam Gallagher concert in March 2018,” shares the bride. “It was in front of the cathedral and was wonderfully romantic.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Our ceremony venue, Hurstwood Church was just five minutes from our home, and our family attend regularly, so it’s personal to us,” explains Hannah. “Afterwards, we went to our local pub, the Kettledrum Inn. We had planned a huge wedding twice, but COVID-19 kept changing our plans, so in the end, we decided to stick to somewhere local, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The food was fabulous, and everyone enjoyed it.” For their favours, Hannah’s mum created small bottles of homemade damson and raspberry gin accompanied by keyshaped bottle openers and labels decorated with claret ribbons. “The table plan was a bit last minute as it was something that had slipped through the net,” recalls the bride. “We downloaded it from a website called Canva. It was a free download but looked lovely on the day. For the place cards, we wrote on brown cards with marker pens and stuck wooden hearts on them.” The couple decided to have small tables to fit all of their guests. “Our florist, The Willow Garden, created little mason jars to decorate the tables,” Hannah adds. “We bought or handmade the rest of the decorations. My mum created picture ladders with photos of family members we wished could have been there to join us. As well as this, we had a welcome sign made from an old mirror and bunting everywhere.” “Our flowers were more perfect than we could ever have imagined,” reveals the bride. “They were so different to anything we’d seen before, and it tied in with our rustic theme perfectly.” The bride’s friend made their wedding cake. “Katie has her own company called Sugar Coates, so we asked her to make our bigday bake,” says Hannah. “It was a naked cake with a rustic topper and made up of our favourite flavours; carrot and Victoria sponge.” The bride and her father travelled to the church in a classic car from Malvern Wedding Cars. “The vehicle then took Harry and me to the reception venue,” shares the bride. “It tied in perfectly with our theme and looked great in the photographs.”

called Ava Rose Hamilton,” explains Hannah. “I would recommend them to anybody! They had a wide range of beautiful gowns, and the friendly staff made it a lovely experience.” Harry and the groomsmen chose Cavani tweed navy suits with flat caps from The Mensroom. “The groomsmen had claret ties, and Harry opted for a blue version,” recalls the bride. “They looked like they’d just stepped out of Peaky Blinders.” The bridesmaids chose gorgeous one-shoulder dresses from Krisp.

TIME TO CELEBRATE “Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we couldn’t have the band that we originally planned, so we organised a quiz instead,” reveals Hannah. “It had pictures of all the married couples in our families, and the aim was to guess the year. We also had a great playlist and plenty of dancing in our little bubble.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Hannah and Harry had the perfect wedding. “Although it’s a cliché, it was the best day of our lives,” Hannah adds. “We loved how intimate the day felt and that everyone had a great time. There was lots of drinking, singing, outdoor dancing, and it was amazing just being together with our closest friends and family after so long apart.” “My dad pre-arranged to stop off for a pint on the way to the church in the wedding car, leaving Harry waiting anxiously for half an hour,” says the bride. “At the reception, my mum spilt red wine all over my dad’s speech! This delayed the speeches a bit while it dried out!”

HONEYMOON “For our honeymoon, we went to Windermere for six nights,” shares Hannah. “We loved it and had a wonderful time together.”

FINALLY,

After having to postpone their wedding eight times, Ceara and Chris tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony at St Catherine’s Church Images courtesy of Adam Tranter Wedding Photography

“ n typical modern fay fashion, Chris and I met online,” says Ceara. “Our first date was a huge success, and over the next few months, we would meet up to go walking or exploring the Lakes. For the first two years, we commuted between Ulverston and St Bees each weekend, exploring different areas and building our relationship. In 2017, we decided to take the plunge and buy our first home in Eskdale.” Chris proposed on Father’s Day in 2019. “As we were unable to see our respective fathers that day, Chris suggested we go for a walk up Harter Fell at the bottom of Eskdale Valley,” shares the bride. “When we got to the top, Chris told me to shut my eyes as he had a surprise. I genuinely thought he was going to give me a small Lindt chocolate bunny as we had several leftover from Easter, but when I opened my eyes, there was a ring! He asked me to marry him, and we had the most perfect day.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

ed the most amazing wedding We were engaged in June 2019 and plann a huge celebration with friends for 30th May 2020. We were going to have initially thought, as most and family, then COVID-19 came along. We might be better by May, but in people probably did at the time, that things We then postponed again and April we decided to postpone until September. uded that we would try and get again, and then to save heartache, we concl letely re-planned and re-worked married with a small guest list, so we comp lled due to restrictions and the wedding. Our smaller day was then cance to bite the bullet and plan our then cancelled again, so in April, we decided of rearranging, we had the big day for the eighth time. After endless hours most perfect day ever.

We had our ceremony at St Catherine’s Chur ch and afternoon tea and canapés from Woodland’s Bistro & Tea Room that we ate while walking around the fells.

Chris and I decided to decorate the church ourselves with bunting and made an incredible photo board of all our guests. Since we weren’t allowed to sing due to COVID-19, we secretly hid musical instruments under everyone’s seats, and we played these during the hymns, which was fantastic.

My little sister died nine years ago at the age of 22. She would have been a bridesmaid, and it was a highly emotional day for our family as the last time I walked down the aisle in a church was at her funeral. We fully believe she was there with us on the day – bringing the sunshine, and for that, we’re eternally grateful. 38

A team of local suppliers came together to create this beautiful styled shoot at Albert’s Standish Images courtesy of Mark Lee Photography

M

ark Lee Photography set up this styled shoot with a team of talented suppliers at Albert’s Standish. We spoke to The Manchester Celebrant, Leanne Gateley, to find out more: “Mark told me he had come across posts on social media from the LGBTQ+ community over double standards within the wedding industry. Some finding that they were being charged more or that some suppliers wouldn’t work with a same-sex couple, which got me thinking, why is this so difficult? The law has changed, and it’s time to accept everyone. It’s a cliché, but love is love, and all the suppliers who worked on this shoot agree that the experience for any couple using their services should be exactly the same. “I spoke with our models, Jodie and Jessica, about their experiences of wedding planning, from the COVID-19 postponements and dresses to the décor, but when I asked whether they had come across any barriers, both were noticeably clear that there had not been any. This experience was mirrored by the majority of the LGBTQ+ couples that I am currently working with, which lifted me knowing that most of us suppliers are doing something right. It’s encouraging to hear that seemingly most couples experiences are positive, but as an industry, it’s important that we all support each other and point out where we can be more inclusive.”

READY, SET, BAKE! 07789 887 177 | www.macakecompany.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I have an academic background with a degree in Business Studies and a Graduate Management Training Programme, which was actually within the food industry. Eventually, I realised it wasn’t for me, and I needed to find something that provided me with a much-needed creative outlet. That was back in 2011, and shortly after, I launched Marie Antoinette Cake Design, and in the last couple of years, The Sugarcraft School so I can help other people in the industry to learn and grow. I’ve always baked and constantly look for creative outlets, whether that’s cake-related or something like interior design. I love trying out new things and giving things a go! I also have a huge passion for flowers and was able to bring this into my business by specialising in incredible sugar flowers, which you can see all over my website and Instagram feed. People are always stunned that they’re handmade from sugar and are blown away by how realistic and beautiful they look. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? I offer a professional and creative service, which means I like to take care of everything! Once couples choose to work with me, it’s a collaborative process with me leading the way and guiding them through the whole thing. Before booking, couples get the opportunity to have a consultation and tasting, which is where we really start our journey together. I love meeting a new couple, getting to know them, finding out about their plans and working out how I can help them. My aim at this stage is for couples to leave the consultation feeling excited about their bake, confident about me as a designer and fully educated about how they can get the most out of their money, their experience and their cake on the actual wedding day. Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? My favourite is always changing, but it’s usually the most recent one I’ve made! I’m always looking to push the boundaries and try new things, develop techniques and experiment with different materials, shapes, and textures. Every single bake I create is a bespoke design and I love giving the cake my focus and attention, it’s an absolute privilege and something I’ll never tire of or take for granted. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? From 2022 onwards, I’m only working with a limited number of couples as I also run The Sugarcraft School. My availability is intentionally limited to allow me to fully focus on each cake, so it’s never too early to reach out, I work with most couples for at least 18 months, but some couples do book earlier as well as later than that. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is exceeding my client’s expectations! It can often be difficult for couples to convey what they want, so it’s an absolute pleasure when people get in touch after seeing my work somewhere and tell me it’s exactly what they’ve been searching for. Guiding them through

CAKES

the process, and seeing how excited they get about the cake is so, so lovely. As all of my designs are unique, couples don’t get to know what it will look like until the actual wedding day, it’s the trust they place in me which I value hugely and work extra hard to make sure that I exceed their expectations and create the perfect bake for them, even if they didn’t quite know what that was to begin with! Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? There are so many different options out there, and platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are perfect for narrowing down a company who can really manifest the look and feel that you want on your day. I have quite a defined contemporary, fine art style, so won’t take on orders that are a completely different look and feel to this. I’m just not the right person for the job but will always recommend someone else who I think would suit perfectly! This means I can do the best possible job for couples who do connect with my aesthetic. I’d also suggest being open about your ideal budget. There are endless possibilities with cake design and as a result, prices can vary significantly from one bake to the next, so by providing a guide of your preferred budget, a supplier can advise you on the options available to you and not get you falling in love with products that are way out of your budget. Finally, always make sure you get to taste some of their creations. As much as I love the design element of my job, first and foremost, it has to taste great. A lot of my clients are foodies and cake obsessed just like me, which I absolutely love, so it’s essential I make the perfect tasting product for them and their guests too! I have a free guide on how to find the perfect designer for you available to download on my website, so that’s definitely worth a read. 45

Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? When booking me, the first thing I need to know is when your wedding is, where it is, how many people are coming and if there are any allergies to consider. I offer vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options as I think it’s important that everyone can join in the celebration. I always offer a consultation that can be face-to-face or over Zoom. This is a chance for you to tell me how you met, who proposed, what things are important to you and where we discuss design options. When couples can come to my studio, I have dummies on show with different styles and techniques on display. There is a charge for these meetings, and it includes five flavours and beverages. Following the consultation, I will provide a quote with design options.

MEET KELLY KIRKBY FROM SUGAR WISHES CAKES 07773 551 975 | www.sugarwishescakes.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? I started baking when my daughter was born and didn’t intend for it to become anything more than making birthday bakes. However, the orders started coming in, and after three years, I created my first wedding cake. That was back in 2013, and now we design and create lots every year. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? Couples will receive a light-hearted and friendly approach to their wedding cake. I like to chat over their wedding to gain an understanding of the feel they’re going for, so I can make recommendations for their design. Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? That’s a difficult question! Every cake we make has a special feeling for us as we have got to know our couples over their wedding planning journey. One that does stick in my mind was a navy blue and white threetier fondant bake that featured watercolour and paint splatters. The bride loved giraffes and had a subtle safari theme, so we included two rose gold giraffes on the top of the cake. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? I usually recommend that clients start planning their cake around 18 months before they get married, especially if they are tying the knot in 46

Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I have two favourite aspects of what I do. The first is meeting new people and hearing their stories. The other is when the cake is made, and the client sees it for the first time.

www.emilyrobinsonphotography.co.uk www.creative-camera.org

Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Once you have your venue and date, I recommend booking your wedding cake. Although your wedding may be one year or more away, once you have found a supplier whose style you like and flavours you love, it’s important to get your date in their diary. The final details can be worked out six months before your date.

www.bohemiaphotos.com

Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? As a child, mealtimes were always spent around the dining room table with everyone chatting and sharing their day. When I had children of my own, that’s when I really got into baking. Birthdays were definitely a big deal in our house. I would spend hours making the design that my girls had chosen. This was in part an expression of love and also because I don’t like the taste of many shop-bought cakes. Around 2015 I attended a figure modelling class with a local cake maker, and that was it, I was hooked. All I wanted to do was to have a better finish on my bakes, so I enrolled in classes – working with fondant, royal icing and sugar flowers. In 2017 my daughter said she was getting married and asked me to make the wedding cake. By the time her wedding rolled around in September 2018, I produced my very first wedding creation – four tiers of fondant covered cake, festooned with sugar flowers. It wasn’t perfect, but it certainly was the best that I could produce.

Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Make sure you try their cake. For me, there is nothing more disappointing than looking at an enticing piece that is screaming ‘eat me’ and find that it hasn’t much flavour or is dry. Meet or chat with your supplier. Do they understand your likes/dislikes and the things that are important to you, and are their values the same as yours? Does the cost reflect the design you want and the time and skill required to produce it? peak wedding season. We have more availability in the winter months, but our prime dates get booked up quickly. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Being given a loose brief from a couple and being trusted to create their dream wedding cake. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? When booking your designer, look over their previous work to ensure you’re choosing someone who can create the style you’re looking for and always sample the cake before booking.

MEET MARGARET LEVY FROM ROSEHILL CAKE STUDIO

CAKES MEET ANDREA WINDLE FROM THOROUGHLY-GOOD CAKES LTD 01704 895 400 | www.thoroughly-goodcakes.co.uk Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? Like most cake makers, my business started from a hobby! I have always loved anything artistic, and with over 20 years of catering experience, anything to do with food. I started by making birthday bakes for my two daughters, which were seen by lots of mums, either at parties or on social media. Then at every party, I offered to provide a cake as a gift. Within a year, I had built up an ‘impressive gallery’ of birthday designs and one day, I was contacted to create a christening cake, and because money changed hands, Thoroughly-Good Cakes was born. Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? It’s all in the name Thoroughly-Good Cakes! It’s not just the quality, it’s everything from the initial greeting, whether that be face-to-face, at a wedding fair or a speedy response on the internet, you have my undivided attention. My daughter has been training with me and has shown a natural talent of her own, so we often work side-by-side on larger jobs.

Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Any reputable supplier will get booked up in advance, so my advice would be to book as soon as you can. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Every new booking is exciting as each customer has put their trust and faith in me. The planning and making of the cake are enjoyable, but the best bit for me is taking the finished photos and getting to see the customer’s reaction as they see their design for the first time. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Do your research! Google reviews, social media business pages, shop windows and asking around are always a great place to start! Do not be afraid to ask questions and ask for samples. See if they have any similar work completed before you book and only pay the deposit when you are certain you have the right person for your wedding.

Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? I have so many designs that I have loved for different reasons. Fondant iced cakes will always be my favourite as I have loved using the skills that I have developed over the past nine years of being in business.

MEET WHITNEY AND IAN SCHOFIELD FROM THE BLACKROD CAKE COMPANY 07943 448 453 | www.facebook.com/theblackrodcakecompany Q – Tell us about your background – how did you become a cake maker? It all began 12 years ago when our youngest was turning one. She was born at 31 weeks and had many severe allergies, which found us in the hospital often. When we were planning a cake for her first birthday, we needed a 100 per cent dairy, gluten, egg, soya and nut-free bake, and nobody would come anywhere near us. We thought, how hard could it be? Twelve years later, here we are with an award-winning bakery! Q – What should couples expect when booking your services? We are very thorough! We like to make sure we understand what you have in mind and that you know exactly what you’re getting. We will ask you to show us the kind of styles you like, and then we start creating a design

bespoke for you. Once we have that sorted, we will provide your quote, which includes absolutely everything! There is nothing worse than booking something for your wedding and then finding out there are lots of additional charges! Q – What’s your favourite wedding cake that you’ve made and why? It feels like there are too many to choose from, but this 4ft beauty (pictured) with the bears on top stands out. There were so many challenges in the construction and so many techniques needed to bring the bride’s vision to life. It was exciting and one we will never forget! Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Lots of people come to us saying ‘we’ve sorted everything else, but we forgot about the cake’ or ‘our wedding is next year I’m sure it’s too early to book’. It’s never too early, and make sure it’s up there on your to-do list! We have dates booked in 2023, 2024 and 2025. If you have your heart set on a certain supplier or a certain style that only some designers can create, don’t wait to get in touch! Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? One of our favourites is the cake tasting. We have an impeccable reputation for taste and over 12 years have developed a lengthy flavour list with over 60 to choose from. When the time comes for couples to choose which flavours they would like to try, they’re always amazed and are even happier when it tastes as amazing as everyone says! Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a cake maker? Trust your instincts. There are many incredible cake makers in our county, and we all offer something slightly different. There will always be someone who just feels right for you! 47

et in Manchester city centre is the beautifully renovated Stock Exchange Hotel. This chic venue provided the perfect backdrop for this glamorous styled shoot. “The property oozes style and luxury while retaining its original Art Deco and Victorian features, it also incorporates a modern spiral staircase of dreams and a penthouse suite to rival all others,” shares Maria from Detail. “Working with a building where every detail has been considered, the styling needed to be pared back, in an understated yet luxurious way. The roses added a sense of opulence to the table setting with touches of gold through the cutlery, accessories and bridal cape. A mix of marble and black candleholders with tapered candles combined with the black and white stationery by PaperGrace looked gorgeous. To complete the look, we opted for a triptych of stunning cakes provided by Marie Antoinette Cake Design that tied in with the cool modern interior.” The incredible gold cape was provided by Moon Child Bridal. “It added the right amount of decadence to the shoot while the tulle dress and frilled veil leant a modern Italian feel to the ceremony images,” explains Maria. “Charlotte Mill’s bow-fronted peep toe shoes were the perfect accompaniment for a splash of modern and old-world glamour. Amanda Makeup Official used NYX vegan make-up products to create our model’s look, keeping a very soft and natural look to start with, gold highlights to complement the gold cape and a stronger lip for the evening look.”

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries Our experts solve your problems

AL FRESCO CELEBRATION

Q – Do you have any suggestions of how we could transform an outdoor space for our wedding? With any outdoor wedding, it’s important to consider how it will work both during the day and in the evening. We use a lot of festoon lighting hung on shepherd’s crooks to create cosy areas. Always use warm white bulbs rather

FUN AT THE FAIR

Q – My partner and I want a carnival-themed wedding, but we’re feeling overwhelmed by the amount of choice available. Do you have any suggestions? This is the first time I’ve heard of someone having a carnival theme, but I think it’s a brilliant idea! To plan the perfect wedding, you need to ensure you have a budget in mind, as this will alter the number of choices available to you. Start by getting your guest numbers set in stone, so you know how much money you will have left for decorations and activities. I strongly advise hiring a wedding planner as they can find the most suitable venues and stylists for you so that you don’t feel so overwhelmed. Hire a caterer who provides carnival-style food such as hot dogs, 52

than anything coloured. This effect looks great throughout the day and really brings a space to life after dark. For me, nothing is cosier than a firepit. The warmth and crackle of real logs burning on an open fire creates a great atmosphere. Matt Pennefather | Eden Event Hire www.edeneventhire.co.uk

pretzels, burgers and doughnuts. You could even create a sweet cart and have lots of fairylights everywhere for when the sun goes down. Bright colours would be perfect for your theme. Think of reds, blues and whites. Have your waiters walking around on stilts in fun outfits, and look for themed stationery to tie the whole day together. The most important thing is to stay calm, take it one step at a time and don’t feel the need to do everything at once. Begin with your venue and guest list, and once that’s sorted everything else will fall into place. Deanna Melia | Your Forever After www.yourforeverafter.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

ROMANTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

Q – How can we get creative night-time shots?

www.darklemoner.co.uk

When photographing at night, flash photography is often used to illuminate the subject. There is, of course, more than one way to do this. One option can be to use an off-camera flash to backlight the bride and groom to create a silhouette shot. Flash can also be used in darker conditions to create stunning high contrast photographs. Remember to look at what ambient lighting your venue has. Signs and outside lighting can make for some striking and memorable images. Other light sources can be used to make interesting and dynamic pictures, such as string lights, lanterns, sparklers and candles.

THE WRITE STUFF

Q – What style of stationery should we go for, and what should we ask companies? Creating a style and theme is one of my favourite parts of wedding stationery. Start by looking for inspiration and ideas on Pinterest and Instagram. Create a moodboard of colours, wedding day styles and flowers you like to help narrow down your theme, and you can then use this to send to suppliers for reference. This will also help you source companies that offer those types of products. If you send a moodboard to a stationer like myself, it will help them get to know you, understand your tastes and guide you to stationery that will complement your day. The invitations will give your guests a subtle hint of what they can expect on the day and get the excitement going. If you love the designs they offer but want something a bit different to make it your own, you could opt for a bespoke service where you have a range designed just for you. Just keep in mind a personal design takes longer, which will be reflected in the cost. I also offer contemporary stationery that can be customised at no extra charge, which is a great way to make your stationery personal without going outside your budget. ESPECIALLY FOR YOU

Q – Our wedding planner has suggested we hire a celebrant for our big day, but we’re not sure what their role is. Should we book one, and what are the benefits? A celebrant will design a tailor-made ceremony that reflects your personalities and wishes. The celebrant will work with you to understand who you are as people and what is special about your relationship in order to create a personal service. While celebrants can’t currently conduct legal marriages in England and Wales, the legalities can be completed separately at a minor cost. Here are some of the benefits of hiring a celebrant: ❤ You will have complete flexibility and can get married wherever and whenever you like. It doesn’t need to be on a licenced premises and could be on a beach, on top of a mountain or in your back garden, the choice is yours! ❤ Celebrants generally only take one booking per day, so you will have contingency in the event of a delay and won’t be bound to a strict time window. ❤ You get to choose an officiant who you like and feel comfortable with. You will meet months before your big day and will feel like friends time the day comes. ❤ You can include prayers and readings, and as you’re not bound by civil laws couples who come from different backgrounds can include both their beliefs. ❤ Your celebration will be completely bespoke to you, meaning your ceremony will stand out and be memorable for your guests. REGIONAL SHOOT

BONNIE AND CLYDE Inspired by the sophisticated and effortless look of the 1930s, a group of suppliers worked together to create this vintage-themed shoot Images courtesy of Sara Ribera Photography

W

ilderness Bride and Sara Ribera Photography teamed up to create this Bonnie and Clyde-themed shoot. “We’ve been serving intimate weddings for quite some time now, years in fact,” says Stephanie Mitchell from Wilderness Bride. “With the arrival of the pandemic, I was pondering the similarities between modern couples and the smaller weddings of the 1930s and 1940s, which coincidentally is where most of our inspiration derives from for our dress collections. I tend to go for themes with a slightly dark undertone and mischievousness and rebelliousness that isn’t so obvious. Bonnie and Clyde came to mind as it encompasses all of the above with sleek sophistication and effortless style. Sara Ribera Photography and I decided to collaborate again and wanted to capture the romance of the city in a large and iconic Manchester building not necessarily known for weddings but ultimately perfect for them. Albert Hall has been on my list for a while and is mostly known as a music venue, but paired with Sara’s

ability to capture incredibly romantic imagery, it worked perfectly.” Local companies came together to bring Stephanie and Sara’s vision to life. “When working with a team, we prefer to set a theme, share a moodboard and let the professionals interpret it into their style,” explains Stephanie. “That way everyone gives their best and is able to get creative. When working on a vintage theme, it’s important to keep in mind wearability and functionality for today’s couples. Mixing vintage and modern styling is key, and Maria from Detail pulled this off flawlessly. She thoughtfully curated items that are reminiscent of the vintage theme but relevant for modern couples. We decided to focus on more of a bar theme instead of sit down meal to capture the free-spirited atmosphere. Gemma from Forage Floristry explained how she wanted to use fresh wildflowers for a more natural and eclectic feel. This added a little softness to the bare brick and gloss tiled walls and an air of spontaneity and wildness.” 55

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!

Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

58

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 59

Floral WONDER REGIONAL SHOOT

Fall in love with this summery styled shoot at the Singleton Lodge

Images courtesy of Adam Tranter Wedding Photography and Photo Gee Photography

W

hen this styled shoot first landed in our inbox, we just knew that our lovely readers would adore it. The planner, Deanna Melia from Your Forever After, tells us: “I chose the Singleton Lodge as I specialise in outdoor weddings, and the hotel is absolutely stunning. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, there was so much space, and luckily for us, the weather was beautiful. Adam Tranter Wedding Photography was the main photographer. I’d seen his work before and fell in love with it. He brought along Photo Gee Photography, who helped capture beautiful photographs throughout the day.” Sonje Jones Design Team provided the flowers, bouquets, ivy, table linen and centrepiece. “I’d seen their work previously and loved it,” says Deanna. “I chose to do a soft colour palette, including light blues, pinks and lots of greenery. I decorated the swing with flowers and ivy as well as soft colours to tie everything together, and I think this gave the shoot an imprint of me as a planner. For the table, we used a pink satin table cover which contrasted with the blue plates and silver cutlery. Isabella Grace Wedding Cake Design created a phenomenal cake that was a three-tier traditional design that looked elegant and luxurious. The wedding favours were from a local business called Happy Hampers. I asked her to provide small favours that could be incorporated into our theme, and it’s safe to say she nailed it! Inside the gorgeous boxes were small white rose wax melts, a keyring ‘key to the heart’, a small heart with a message on and some love heart sweets. The larger package had a children’s activity pack inside to keep kids occupied during the wedding. “I chose my sister and one of my friends to model as the bridesmaids as I think it’s important to show real people in a shoot. Moments In Time Bridal provided the bride’s dress, veil and shoes. She’s a lovely lady who’s very honest, professional and the dress caught my eye because of the lace at the top, chiffon at the bottom and low neckline. The model, Emily, felt comfortable wearing it, which was important to me as I wanted her to feel happy during the shoot. Della from 52 Reasons did the stationery. The pieces were fantastic quality, and I was so happy with how it was executed.” Pixie Dust Make Up Artist did the models’ make-up. “I wanted a delicate and subtle look,” explains Deanna. “I didn’t want anything too heavy, and as she had worked in the TV industry, she truly wowed me. The whole shoot was inspired by what my dream wedding would be, and I think I executed it well, and I hope it gives inspiration to others.” 61

hen this styled shoot first landed in our inbox, we just knew that our lovely readers would adore it. Jules Fortune tells us: “As a regular photographer at Red Hall Hotel, their wedding coordinator, Helen, asked me if I wanted to be part of a team for this beautiful photo shoot. The venue has recently undergone a refurbishment, so she wanted to highlight the new look by bringing all their favourite local suppliers together. The theme for the shoot was based around Gingerbread Event’s room styling. The golden pampas and Art Deco styled backdrop became the inspiration for the cake design, dresses and hair and make-up. I wanted to showcase the glamour and elegance of the look, giving the whole shoot an Art Deco feel. The finished look came together beautifully, topped off with the epic lighting supplied by Peter Lockwood Events.”

BUZZ

BYE BYE TO DRY

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

THE CLEANSING EXPRESS

Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 86

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what

hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily

at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 87

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

HAIR CARE HERO

Q – How can I make sure my hair is in good condition for my wedding day? Planning your wedding is an exciting yet stressful experience that can take its toll on your hair. Healthy locks begin on the inside, so take vitamin supplements at least three months before the big day to help your hair thrive. Don’t overuse heat and use treatments to help maintain strength and moisture. Get your tresses cut one month before, giving it plenty of time to settle. Right before your wedding isn’t the time to try a drastic new style. Plan any extreme makeovers a year before the big day, allowing your hair time to grow if you don’t love it. Aim to have achieved your target shade at least eight weeks before with a touch up the week before to ensure the colour looks fresh. Choosing a style depends on the neckline of your dress. Ruffles and frills combined with fussy hair may appear too much. If your gown is minimal, consider a sleek style or soft, loose waves. Remember, you’re creating lasting memories that you will see in your photos for years to come, so don’t necessarily go for the latest trend as you may look back in 10 years and wonder what on earth you were thinking! Select a stylist you have complete confidence in and check out their previous work on real clients before booking. The time running up to your nuptials is when you should discuss your thoughts and ideas, plan whether you want to wear a veil and what will fit with your style. Take along pictures that inspire you and options you don’t like to your trial to ensure you and your stylist are on the same page. This will take away any unnecessary stress on your wedding morning. Most importantly, arrive on the day fed, watered and with clean, dry hair ready for your stylist to prep. Anna Murray Hair stylist www.joanna-murray.co.uk 88

TREND SETTER

Q – What wedding dress styles, colours and embellishments are popular at the moment? Short wedding dresses are becoming a massive trend. You don’t have to wear the traditional tea-length design, you could opt for a high front and low back like Gwen Stefani’s Vera Wang gown or something like Lilly Allen’s vintage mini Dior dress. If that’s not for you, then how about ruffles? It can create extra detailing or you could go big with a ruffle mermaid skirt. Off-the-shoulder gowns are super flattering and very popular among most designers. Square necklines have also made a return thanks to Bridgerton setting a new trend. To create a statement, why not try trousers or a jumpsuit? Those of you who would rather stay with a full-length dress, try adding some detachable puffy sleeves as boho styles are on the rise. If you have a short gown, you can add on a detachable skirt with a train. Fashionable colours include a nude base with ivory lace detailing or a traditional off white. Plain gowns can be accessorised with a cape or shawl that has some beaded detailing on it. Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with a sash around the waist or accessories such as headbands, which can be paired with statement earrings. Remember the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing. Roxanne Halenko Dress designer www.roxannehalenko.com

The darling buds

fo May

Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.

STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,

amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.

EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best

starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.

EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.

BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 94

WEDDINGS AT HALLÉ ST PETER’S

Hallé St Peter's is situated in the centre of Manchester, at the heart of the resurgent area of Ancoats, a unique venue. Following a multi-million-pound refurbishment and extension project the deconsecrated church and new Oglesby Centre have been transformed into an elegant venue ideal for weddings.

We can accommodate up to 250 guests in our main space, a flexible area where we host your Wedding Ceremony and Reception.

An elegant interior is complemented by breathtaking architecture and original features, creating the perfect setting for your wedding day. Raise a toast before the impressive backdrop of this elegant venue and immerse yourself in the luxury of the incredible setting.

On the ground floor looking out to Ancoats Square our new Hallé Kitchen is the perfect setting for your guests to enjoy their drinks before the Wedding Breakfast. The large glass retractable doors can be fully opened up to bring the outside in.

Our inhouse wedding team will be on hand to help you create the day of your dreams. Whether you're looking to put your own personal touches, or would prefer a more traditional look, we can help and take care of all the details, so you can just relax and enjoy the day.

Our inhouse caterers, Chapman Holmes have been consistently excelling and exceeding the highest expectations of their wedding couples for 30 years. From popular menus to completely personalise bespoke fair we use the absolute best of ingredients, prepared to perfection and artistically presented.

On the first floor overlooking Ancoats Square the Victoria Wood Hall is perfect for your drinks reception and canapés.
