It ’s party time! H

ere at Your Surrey Wedding, we’re celebrating our 90th issue! It seems like yesterday that I picked up the magazine for the first time, but here we are nearly two years later. Our first issue launched in 2006, and since then, we’ve featured some amazing weddings, fabulous styled shoots, and seen suppliers go above and beyond for their couples, especially in the last year. We cannot thank all of you enough for your support as, after all, we wouldn’t be here without you! To celebrate, we’ve put together a showstopping issue that’s full of inspiration. We have four real weddings, the latest products from local stationers and a must-see planning guide. What’s more, our fashion section is full of fabulous boho and Hollywood-inspired dresses. We love seeing your real weddings and styled shoots, so if you’d like to be featured, get in touch via our website – www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or email me at melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Butterfly Meadow Weddings is a new property set within the picturesque Surrey countryside. The owners tell us: “Our venue is different in that we provide a full package, including a comprehensive fully-equipped marquee with furniture, a catering tent, entrance pagoda, a bar, toilets, generator, bouquets, table flowers, décor, light-up letters, uplighters and a DJ. Almost everything is supplied for your special day, making it an effortless and stress-free experience. The venue is hidden away on private land, just two miles from Oxted, Surrey. Despite its secluded location, it has excellent access to main roads, including the A22, A25, M25 and M23 and has National Rail links with mainline stations nearby. Gatwick Airport is also within easy reach, and there’s ample parking on-site. “Couples will have a choice of two different sites, both have lovely views, including the stunning North Downs, rolling fields, meadowlands and old English tree lines. We have a resident florist and venue decorator with many years of experience. She will create not only your bouquets but also amazing floral displays and decorations for your ceremony and reception. We also have a very experienced DJ who supplies high-quality musical entertainment for you and your guests and giant light-up letters and AV equipment for the speeches.” To find out more, visit www.butterflymeadowweddings.co.uk

Montezuma’s, a British chocolate company, has unveiled a new shop in Guildford. A scrumptious addition to the Surrey Hills, the store is located at 126 High Street in the heart of the city centre. The iconic bright colours of Montezuma’s entire range fill the shelves with chocolate buttons, truffles and their 100 per cent cocoa range, perfect for wedding favours or gifts. Guildford is the second new Montezuma’s store to open this year, as the company continues its mission to boost the high street and provide a friendly experience for customers. Helen Pattinson, the co-founder of Montezuma’s, commented: “We’re so excited to bring the Montezuma’s magic to Guildford. With our company headquarters in the heart of the South Downs, this patch of England has a special place in our hearts. We can’t wait to introduce Guildford locals and visitors to our award-winning products and hope to become the town’s new favourite chocolate shop!” To find out more, visit www.montezumas.co.uk 9

Bark & Rock, a luxury stationery company in Surrey, has launched a new range of guest books including its limited edition Bubinga Kewazinga range. Each piece is made from carefully selected wood from Bubinga trees, which is popular in fine furniture design and often used to make musical instruments. Bark & Rock is one of the only workshops in the UK that make high-end journals and guest books from natural materials by hand. Wedding planners can choose from a selection of more than 40 woods that have been carefully selected. Director, Luke Gosling, explains: “Focusing our journals and notebooks on the world’s best and unusual woods allows us to offer a truly luxury product perfect for weddings. Working with these wood veneers is like working on a piece of art. It's challenging because no two pieces are the same. Each of our guest books is made to order and last a lifetime too.” Bark & Rock also offer bespoke inlaying, and each book can include engravings on silver plated or 24-Carat gold plaques to make it truly personalised for the bride and groom and comes with either plain or lined paper. Check out www.barkandrock.com for more information.

NEW AND IMPROVED

The Ball & Wicket pub, located on the outskirts of Farnham, has undergone an extensive six-figure refurbishment. Previously known as The Forest Inn, the property is part of the Chef & Brewer collection of traditional British country pubs. With a rustic design inspired by the surrounding Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, guests will be met with a neutral and earthy colour scheme as they step foot inside. The ideal spot to find peace after a long day or to enjoy a relaxing pre-wedding meal, the Ball & Wicket will cater for all moments. Upstairs is a stylish function room for private events, from birthday parties and weddings to business breakfasts. The pub also has a spacious garden area, complete with firepits, outdoor lights and beautiful plants, perfect for cosy nights or al fresco lunches with friends and family. The general manager at the Ball & Wicket, Dean Oxborough, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to launch our very special pub for the community. The team has been working tirelessly to get everything ready in time for this summer and we’re delighted to be able to give back to our community with this new social hub. We’re keen to create a pub that’s rooted in the local area, not just as a place to catch up with friends and family but as an opportunity for those pursuing a career in hospitality to get their start or further their careers. We’ve recruited two of our chefs from the immediate neighbourhood so far, with more to come.” For more information, visit the website www.chefandbrewer.com/pubs/surrey/ball-wicket

HAMPTON COURT PALACE, KT8 9AU 02031 666 507 | www.hrp.org.uk/weddings

Hampton Court Palace was the chosen place of residence for many kings and queens of England and has elaborately expanded over the centuries. With building beginning in 1515, the Tudor palace, with its red-rose Tudor brick, soon became a favourite of King Henry VIII. In the 17th century, William and Mary expanded the palace with the contrasting Baroque architectural style of Wren. The property is guaranteed to impress with its cobbled courtyards, peaceful gardens and soaring staterooms. The Privy Garden was created to allow a quiet space for the monarch’s exclusive use, but today the garden has been restored for everyone to enjoy how it would have looked for William III in 1702. The Privy Garden can be used for private receptions, with guests able to arrive by boat and enter the palace through the magnificent Tijou Screens, designed by Jean Tijou in 1690, straight into the garden. CELEBRATE IN STYLE The Little Banqueting House is a small but picturesque space, ideal for intimate celebrations of up to 50 guests for a ceremony and seated reception and 80 for a drinks reception. Built for William III, it’s set slightly away from the main palace, overlooking the river with a rich sense of majesty and history. Set in the beautiful Tiltyard Gardens, The Garden Room was built in a 1920s style and boasts a private walled garden. Large enough to seat 180 friends and family, it’s licensed for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies, and is a great area for live bands and dancing. It also can be used in conjunction with other spaces, including the Little Banqueting House or the Palace State Apartments, to provide a memorable day for all guests. The King’s Guard Chamber displays a remarkable collection of nearly 3,000 swords, bayonets, muskets and pistols on the walls. This aweinspiring room replicates William III’s assertion of power and dominance over his court and can accommodate up to 150 nearest and dearest for dinner and 200 for the evening drinks reception. The painted ceiling by Antonio Verrio can be found in the Queen’s

Drawing Room, which looks out onto the gardens and can hold 120 loved ones for the service. The Great Watching Chamber was the first of Henry VIII’s State Apartments beyond the Great Hall and can fit 100 people for the vows. Seated receptions can take place in The King’s Eating Room with up to 40 people, The Cartoon Gallery (150), The Orangery & Privy Garden (250) or The Great Hall (270). The Great Hall is one of the most jawdropping historical venues in the country. Originally designed as a feasting chamber for Henry VIII, it was the last Medieval great hall to be constructed for the English monarchy. With its stained-glass windows, sumptuous tapestries and magnificent hammer-beam ceiling, today the Great Hall makes a perfect venue for showstopping ceremonies and lavish receptions. WE LOVE... A dedicated and experienced events manager will work with couples to ensure the day is planned to perfection. With exclusive wedding photography, access to private gardens, elegant cobbled courtyards and breathtaking staircases, this 500-year old treasure makes a spectacular backdrop for weddings. 25 

Overlooking the stunning gardens and terrace, The Lloyds Room has a traditional décor with contemporary twists, wood panelling, an original fireplace and space for 50 nearest and dearest.

Located within 35 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland is the quintessentially English Stanhill Court. The new owner’s enthusiasm and passion for this historic building have led to a complete refurbishment with plenty of outside space, including an Amphitheatre and room to land a helicopter. Once a Victorian country manor house, the interior is traditional yet contemporary with an elegant twist. It has a cosy cabinstyle bar, a bright orangery and bedrooms exuding opulence and style.

ucy and Rob met in the modern way, online. “I knew he was the one for me because he was so funny, open, honest and incredibly generous,” says Lucy. “He says he fell for me because I was the only person that understood him and made him feel equal.” Rob surprised Lucy by proposing on the anniversary of their second date. “He said he knew on that date that our relationship was going somewhere,” shares the bride. “He sent me on a scavenger hunt around our home as our second date had been at my house. He set up lots of clues that eventually lead me to where we had our first kiss outside. There he was waiting with a book he’d made describing everything he loved about us, and he then got down on one knee. It was an amazing proposal and totally surprised me.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 37

Rob and I wanted our guests to be able to walk from the church to the reception, and we loved the idea of a relaxed marquee, so we hired a set up at the recreation ground.

Flowers By Becky designed two beautiful centrepieces that used the same flowers as my bouquet. Some were tall to fill the space, and others were smaller to reflect the more relaxed atmosphere we wanted. To finish the look, my mum decorated jars and bottles that we placed on the tables.

The bridal party and I travelled to the churc h in a Rolls Royce from Clover Care Wedding Cars.

asmine and Stephen met through a mutual friend on a night out in Croydon. “It was far from love at first sight,” says Jasmine. “In fact, Stephen thought I was a bit stuck up, and to be honest, I don’t think I said two words to him that night, so it’s no wonder his first impression wasn’t a great one! We met again on New Year’s Eve the following month, and again, there was no love story. We went out as part of a large group in Bournemouth and barely remembered saying hello or goodbye to each other. Less than a month later, we ended up on another night out together. I had dyed my hair back to brunette, which apparently made me Stephen’s type. He spent most of the night trying to figure out how to make his move. We finally exchanged numbers and had our first date a week later, and the rest is history!” Stephen proposed on Thursday 22nd August, 2019, at the Prince Edward Theatre. “We had been together almost eight years, and he spent months planning the most private, intimate and personal proposal,” shares the bride. “We had a private box with the best seats in the house, VIP refreshments complete with champagne on ice, a private bar, canapés and even a butler! He asked me the question during the interval of Aladdin, and two days later, we organised a surprise engagement party where we announced the news to all our friends and family.”

SETTING THE SCENE “Our original wedding was planned for Saturday 29th May, 2021,” explains Jasmine. “As the day drew closer, we knew we had to either postpone or cut our guest list by 75 per cent and accept the restrictions. In the end, we decided to move the whole day to 2022. It was a difficult decision but what softened the blow was deciding to get legally married this year! We arranged the entire day, including booking the venues in just three months. Stephen made enquiries to local pubs to try and find the perfect setting and discovered The Weyside, a beautiful pub just a five-minute drive from Guildford Register Office with views of the river. Our bigger day will now be on our first anniversary, and we know it will be worth the wait. We will always look back on our small wedding as a little rainbow in a very big storm.” The happy couple decided on a celestial-themed day. “We had silver star garlands hanging from the boathouse and twinkling fairylights running along the banquet tables,” adds Jasmine. “Our favours were all DIY. We opted for personalised healing crystals specifically chosen for each guest. Our theme was also reflected in our amazing cake, which was designed and baked by Rocky’s Cakes ve in the shape of a crystal geode.” To complete the look, they chose faux eucalyptus, white

pillar candles and lights for the centrepieces. “Our catering was provided by The Weyside,” recalls the bride. “It mostly consisted of gourmet burgers from the burger shack and fish and chips!”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My outfit was from River Island,” says Jasmine. “It was a white sequin two-piece shorts and blazer. I wanted to save my wedding dress for our big day next year, but I still felt like a bride. My veil was my something old as it was worn by my mum on her wedding day. I did have some accessories originally intended for the bigger day, which were my gorgeous shoes and my silver leaf hairpiece from Helena Fortley Bridal Boutique Ltd.” Stephen wore stone-coloured trousers, a patterned blazer and a dried flower buttonhole from Etsy.

TIME TO CELEBRATE “Due to restrictions, we weren’t allowed live music or any entertainment,” shares the bride. “We did bring along a mini-Bluetooth speaker for some background noise which went down a treat.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt extremely lucky and grateful to be having a wedding during these times,” explains Jasmine. “We’re so glad we decided to still get married and to only postpone our wedding but not our marriage. Our ceremony consisted of just six guests plus our photographer, so it felt amazing when we got to the reception venue where the rest of our friends and family were waiting to greet us. We felt so much love and a magical atmosphere. We also loved being whisked away by Peter Reynolds Photography to a quiet spot after our ceremony. It gave us the opportunity to reflect on the fact that we had finally said our vows!” Untraditionally Jasmine decided to make a speech. “We wanted to save all the traditional speeches for our big day in 2022,” adds Jasmine. “The speech reflected on the past year and the importance of living in the moment. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house, and it’s safe to say that the bar has been set very high for the groom, best man and father-of-the-bride’s speeches next year! We also had an unplanned, impromptu first dance after being pressured by our guests, but my little brother hi-jacked it by seductively dancing in front of us, which had everyone in stitches.” “The build-up to our day was what made it extra special,” recalls the bride. “Despite having our hen and stag dos cancelled, completely rearranging all of our plans and not being allowed to do most of the normal things you should be able to do on your wedding day, we could not have felt more supported or loved by the people around us.”

MINIMOON “The day after the wedding, we flew to Edinburgh for five days,” says the bride. “We spent time relaxing in a spa, eating out, hiking up mountains, and took a road trip to Loch Ness to find Nessie!” 45

REAL WEDDINGS

IS IN THE AIR

Rhiannon and Wayne had an elegant white and green themed wedding at The Savill Garden Images courtesy of Shelby Ellis Photography

R

hiannon and Wayne met at Reading University. “I was a student, and Wayne worked on-site,” says Rhiannon. “We had our first date at a bar where an awful karaoke night was taking place, so we had to move to a new location! A couple of cinema dates later, and that was it.” “We had been ring shopping together to see what kind of thing I liked, but I had no idea when the big moment would be,” shares the bride. “We had a Disney trip coming up, but Wayne was adamant that it would be too cheesy to propose there, so I figured there was no hope. It was such an amazing trip, and a couple of days in, he got down on one knee in front of the castle! He asked a guy to take pictures as a bit of a decoy, and luckily once he realised what was happening, he started recording.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

49

I visited The Savill Garden with my family when I was growing up, and it was absolutely beautiful, so I knew I wanted to get married there. We’ve since learned that they only do one or two weddings a year, so we were very lucky that they agreed to do ours when we asked! We chose St John’s Egham for the ceremony as it was where I was christened, and helped out at the Sunday school, so it was a no brainer.

To celebrate Wayne’s 30th birthday, I made plant pots out of air-dry clay and used the leftovers to make place names for people to take home as favours. They were a hexagon shape to reflect the bottom tier of our cake with names stamped on.

I arrived at the church in my dad’s classic car.

We cannot say enough amazing things about our cake. It was gluten-free, and Anna Lewis Cake Design did a great job with the decorations. It looked exactly how we imagined, and some of the lace detailing was inspired by my dress.

50

Longacres Garden Centre provided loose foliage for our centrepieces, and we balanced it out with two hanging arrangements.

All the décor and garden games were made by my parents and I. My dad is brilliant at woodwork, so he provided salt and pepper shakers for the tables and built all the other wooden structures during lockdown. The bunting was created by my mum, as were all the coffee table cushions.

REAL WEDDINGS

My dress was a Morilee design from Love Me Do Brides. I loved the lace detailing around the bottom, which was traditional but still felt fresh and modern. I accessorised with my mum’s veil, shoes from Dune and earrings from my brother. Hidden in the bodice of my dress was a piece of a handkerchief that used to belong to my grandfather and a 6 pence that my nanny sent me.

Wayne chose a grey French Connection suit from Moss Bros. We bought it when my brother worked there, and it was great to have someone who knew all about suits helping us. His usher wore a navy dress with lace detailing at the top, similar to my bridesmaids, and the best man chose a navy suit.

The bridesmaids opted for gorgeous dresses with lace detailing from Chi Chi London.

For our entertainment, we hired Paul Grainger Music, and our guests absolutely loved him. He was so fantastic! He came to check out the venue beforehand and even played our first dance. Before the end of the night, I ended up stealing the piano from him and playing it myself !

All the stress was worth it, and we were both incredibly happy on the day.

My parents did so much and having everything handmade, especially for our big day, was wonderful. 51

illiam and Jonathan met on a dating app. “We had our first date in a bar and hit it off immediately,” shares William. “I was attracted to his passion for family, tennis and his handsome good looks.” Jonathan proposed to William on his birthday at the Skygarden in London. “It was a complete surprise,” explains William. “He asked the question after dinner while we were sitting at the table overlooking the London skyline.” Here William shares some of his favourite moments from their big day...

We looked at four or to each other and agreed we both wanted to five other venues, but they just didn’t compare.

Given the uncertainty sur roundi ng the wedding, we were both very relaxed about things. The Little Banqueting House at Hampton Court Pal ace is such a stunning room that you could probably put a sack over a table, and it would still look stunning.

Our original wedding was scheduled for Septe mber 2020, however, as we got to May, we were still locked down, and it became clear that we would not be able to have the wedding we planned, so we postponed it to May 2021. As time went by, things were still not back to normal, so we decided to postp one the large party until 2022 but still get married this year. We planned a small cerem ony for 20 people and then at the very last moment the rules relaxed slightly and we were allowed 24 guests!

A DAY TO REMEMBER

How to plan the perfect wedding

H

ere at Your Surrey Wedding, we understand how overwhelming organising your nuptials can be, especially with the pandemic. To help, we’ve spoken to local experts and asked what you should be aware of being booking.

BOOKING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

It’s important that you get a great vibe from your photographer, feel comfortable around them and love their work before booking. Any questions you ask should be met with a warm welcome. They should give you a clear indication of the breakdown of fees for the entire day, what’s included within your package and what you’ll pay in terms of the deposit. Talk to them about their style and the type of shots you want for your wedding. Be mindful of how expensive your supplier is. If you’re aware of their prices in advance, then this will help you avoid any disappointment further down the line. Discuss your budget with them, as they may be able to tailor a package to suit you. Booking in advance is key. This is normally around nine months to one year before the wedding. Photographers tend to get booked up at peak seasons, such as summer, so to get exactly what you want, it’s always good to book early. Your chosen company should have public liability insurance. If you’re not sure, then ask. Ask what they cover in the event of a cancellation or emergency. COVID-19 has been a prime example of that, and they should agree to reschedule at no extra cost. Should you need to cancel or postpone, then speak to them as soon as you can. Providing they have availability for your new date, then your reservation should be updated. Ask to see examples of their work if you feel you haven’t seen enough. Your photographer should be more than happy to provide you with this. Get to know them. Ask why they love what they do and ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed around them. After all, they will be capturing one of the most special days of your life.

FINDING A MAKE-UP ARTIST

I love to inspire people, and for me, it’s more than putting make-up on a canvas, it’s how I use my skill to enhance your features and personality. Choosing a supplier is a personal choice. It needs to be something that feels right for you. Recommendations are a good source, but always go with your gut! Every artist is different and will do things slightly differently. From application to education, I always look to inspire people and provide an honest, professional and passionate service. Every bride is a unique canvas, and your make-up should enhance your natural features while also making you feel like you but at your very best. I want to encourage each client to maintain a positive approach towards the beauty of their natural skin by creating their perfect look. Put those wipes in the bin, cleanse your face and embrace your natural features. Remember, at any time you find planning a little overwhelming, you can find comfort with a bit of self-care. After all, it’s the one day that’s all about you! Frederica Joy Haynes Faces by Freddy www.facesbyfreddy.co.uk 59

HOW TO STYLE YOUR VENUE

Book in advance! Most businesses raise their prices every year, and by securing your suppliers in advance, most will honour their current prices on future bookings. Find a venue stylist that is willing to get to know you as a couple. You may know exactly what you want and have had your Pinterest board finalised since you were 13, but by having a conversation and getting to know your supplier, they may be able to suggest some changes to help you personalise the space. Make sure you research their photos and prices before your consultation. This will give you an idea of the overall cost and help you to stick to your all-important budget. Don’t be afraid to go cheaper or ask for photos. Lots of companies offer very similar items and some charge more than others, in this case, more expensive isn’t always best. As long as you’ve done your research and have trust in your stylist, your day and vision won’t break the bank. Think about the size of the room and the number of guests you’re having. If you have a smaller room with lots of friends and family, think about a small centrepieces, for example, a fishbowl or candle vase. This will stop the room from looking busy and cramped. In the same thought, if you have a large area or very high ceilings, opt for tall centrepieces such as a martini glass or flower vase to ensure the room doesn’t appear empty with lots of blank space. If your venue is required to do a quick change during the day, you will want to make sure your centrepieces are easily moveable or not complicated to reassemble, as most properties will make these changes without your stylist there. Take your supplier along before the big day so that you are both confident in your wishes! Demi Merchant DM Event Decor www.facebook.com/dmeventdecor

CHOOSING THE PERFECT FAVOURS

Wedding favours are generally a small token at the dining table to thank your guests for sharing your special day. It can be an added expensive, but it’s a really meaningful touch and a lovely way to thank your guests. Favours don’t have to be just at the table. There are lots of different ways of making your big day personal without breaking the bank. I recommend sticking with your theme and colour scheme throughout the planning process, have fun and make it personal to you. At the ceremony, you could have tissues with labels that read ‘for your happy tears’ or bubbles and confetti ready for walking down the aisle. During the drinks reception, try creating a scavenger hunt, then in the evening, offer your loved ones a basket of individual sweet bags and a hangover kit to take home. ❤ Decide if you want to offer something edible or not. ❤ Contact your suppliers approximately six months before the wedding. ❤ Let them know if you have a budget. ❤ Consider any additional costs such as delivery. Here at Little Fairy Party Favours, we offer bespoke and personalised designs to suit your requirements and budget. Matched to your theme or colour scheme, we can provide several options for you to choose from. Emily Moss Little Fairy Party Favours www.facebook.com/littlefairypartyfavours 60

PLANNING FLOWERS SOS FINDING THE PERFECT FLORIST

A good supplier will usually have a decent website as well as a Facebook page. They should have reviews and recommendations from previous clients and photos of their work. Make sure you look through them carefully but be aware you will always get one customer that will give an average or not so good review, such is human nature! Ask your friends and neighbours who they used. Make sure the company is local and doesn’t have to travel hours. Be wary of those that don’t show their location. If you see a florist you like the look of, ask your venue if they know them. Some properties have a list of preferred suppliers but don’t be put off if they’re not listed, as sometimes you have to pay to be featured. Give them a call. There’s nothing like talking to see if you’re going to like working with someone. Find a knowledgeable and understanding florist/decorator. Someone who will listen to what you would like and put your ideas into reality. They should also be able to tell you if your ideas will work and provide alternative suggestions if not. Meet up or video call to give a detailed list of your requirements. Provide them with any pictures you’ve seen and liked, colour samples and a moodboard if you have one. It’s also worth showing them pictures of your dress if you’ve chosen it, as this can affect the shape and style of your bouquet. If you have an embellished gown, then you may not want a shower bouquet that will cover it, but if you’ve opted for a plain design, then a shower or teardrop arrangement may be perfect. I have a very large portfolio to show couples which includes thousands of photos and ideas. A portfolio will help you to see what you like and what fits into your theme. Ask what flowers are in season to keep the cost down. I add embellishments like bows and diamantés for unusual colours such as navy blue. Mixing silk flowers that are not in season with those that are can also make it cheaper. Annabel Grange Butterflies and Bows www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk

HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT SMILE

Plan ahead as some dental treatments take longer than others so take this into account before booking. There are a range of services available that will ensure you have a gorgeous smile on your big day. A hygiene scale and polish can be done within one week of the wedding, teeth whitening in two weeks, composite bonding is four to six weeks, and teeth straightening should be done six to 18 months before the wedding. Choose a dentist that will have available to suit you. If you’re having various procedures done, select a company that is multi-disciplinary. At Alan Wilson Dentistry, we offer many services under one roof, which saves you time and multiple trips! Stay within your budget. Ask the practice about finance and practice plans which can help cover the cost of treatments. Remember to continue to look after your oral health at home with good brushing and flossing! n area that is often overlooked when planning your big day is the stationery. From the initial save-the-dates to the table plan and thank you cards, there’s a lot to take into consideration. To help give you some inspiration, local stationers have sent in some of their top tips and ideas.

www.cherishedcards.co.uk and www.andrewfranklin.co.uk

“We’re going to continue to see lots of blues and soft pinks, whether it’s baby blue, ice blue or darker blues and/or blush or pale pinks for the rest of 2021 and going into 2022. As so many weddings have had to move from last year, these colours have carried over from postponed weddings.” – Emma Ellis from Cherished Cards.

▲ “A floral theme is still on-trend, and so is incorporating dried flowers into your stationery. There has been a shift in what couples are ordering, as weddings have been smaller, individual menus have become popular, and in line with restrictions, name cards for ceremony seating have been current this year too.” – Emma from Cherished Cards.

BEAUTIFULLY

STATIONERY

“Which colours are you most drawn to, or which hues do you envisage for your bridesmaids or wedding flowers? Do you like a neutral palette, monochrome with some accents, something bold and dramatic, or romantic soft pastel shades? By identifying your preferences, you can look to incorporate these into your stationery. The season in which you’re marrying will provide inspiration too, either from the shades usually associated with the season, or indeed the sort of flowers that will be available at the time of your wedding. Rich, warm hues and jewel tones are often used for autumn/winter weddings, whilst a fresh, colourful palette tends to be used more for spring and summer nuptials, however, it’s entirely up to you!” – Natalie Drage from Flamboyant Invites.

▼ Guest books are a lovely way to remember your big day. This exquisite guest book from Bark & Rock is made from carefully selected wood from Bubinga trees.

▲ Your invitations set the scene for your big day so make sure they stand out. Create a moodboard to show your stationer so they can get an idea of what colours and themes you like. Before finalising your design, ask someone to check all your proofs to make sure there are no mistakes. It’s common to mention any dress codes you may have on your invites and if you have a specific gift idea or would like the money donated to charity. 65

▲ “When I first meet couples, I ask them to send photos of their style – this could be the wedding dress, bridesmaids’ dresses, the groomsmen’s suits, cakes, décor, flowers etc. From there, I can put together stationery samples that match their look or theme.” – Emma from Cherished Cards.

Consider an unusual wood for your guest book to create a luxury product that you’ll love for years to come.

www.cherishedcards.co.uk and www.mariamadison.co.uk www.flamboyantinvites.com

“When choosing your colours, opt for something that complements your theme and venue’s décor, so the hues don’t clash.” – Emma from Cherished Cards.

Set up a website with all the important information and include a link on your save-the-dates. If you’re having a themed wedding, then incorporate it into the website’s design.

“How would you describe your dream dress? Timeless and elegant, boho and relaxed, total glamour, or something colourful and non-traditional? Your gown vision will often drive the style of your big day, including your stationery. So if you love a sleek minimalist dress, then you might also prefer a modern minimalist style too. Get a Pinterest board together and pin your favourite styles that reflect your vision. Ultimately you’ll be able to share your moodboard inspiration with your wedding stationer, which is always super helpful!” – Natalie from Flamboyant Invites.

▲ Print individual menus for each of your guests to remind them of their food choices. Take some time to arrange your tables and be mindful of who you sit together. 66

“Ideally, it would be best to work with suppliers that have been recommended to you. However, at a minimum, I would always suggest that you ask potential stationers to send you samples of their work before booking.” – Emma from Cherished Cards.

▲ “The cost of stationery can vary widely, depending on the type of printing, quantities and supplier. Products that are tailored to you, professionally designed and printed onto luxe paper is always going to cost a premium. Each couple is working to a different budget, so when shortlisting your favourite stationers to contact, you must be sure of their pricing. There’s nothing more disappointing than setting your heart on a particular designer, only to find out later on that their prices are way over your budget!” – Natalie from Flamboyant Invites.

▲ Your stationery should reflect your personalities. Remember to choose a font that’s easy to read and try not to forget anyone when ordering your invitations as it can be expensive to buy extras.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES

www.denisewinterphotography.co.uk

Our experts solve your problems

THROUGH THE LENS

Q – There are so many photographers out there – how do we choose the right one for us? There is a huge amount of choice available, and it can feel overwhelming. There are so many styles available from creative to storytelling, documentary and alternative, and with so many price options such as hourly, half-day or full-day – it’s difficult to know where to begin. My best advice would be to ignore the buzzwords and look purely at a photographer’s work. If it resonates with you and you like the style, look and feel, arrange to have a chat with them. Do you feel comfortable with them, do they fill you with confidence that if something unexpected happened they could work with it and can you see them being at your

wedding day with you and your guests? I know this may sound obvious, but they will be with you for the majority of your day, so you want to make sure that you’re comfortable with them, and having a good rapport will help when you’re having your couples portraits taken. If you’ve ticked those boxes, price should be the last factor. Your photographs will be a permanent reminder of your wedding day, moments with your loved ones, the hours of planning and details which have gone into your day will all be documented. It’s a cliché, I know, but once the cake is eaten and the dress packed away in the loft, your marriage and pictures will be what remain. Denise Winter Photographer www.denisewinterphotography.co.uk

DARLING BUDS

Q – I love the colour blue and want to incorporate the hue into our wedding flowers. What blooms do you suggest we look for? What’s not to love about the colour blue? Not only does it represent the sky and sea, but it also means trust, loyalty and sincerity – a perfect reason to choose this hue for such a special occasion. When it comes to selecting your wedding flowers, you may come across one too many artificial sprayed carnations or roses online. Thankfully, there are a variety of natural blue shades, tints and textures to choose from with no spray can insight. Start with gesture blooms, there are hydrangeas, delphiniums, alliums, larkspurs and tweedia, each available in a variety of textures and shades. These can be lifted with filler options such as clematis, Nigella seed heads, forget-me-nots and thistles. Blue also works with different shades such as ivory, peach, soft pinks and lavender. Why not also add in some sage colours such as green hanging amaranthus to add further texture to hanging centrepieces and cascading bouquets? Kimberley Binns Florist www.gingerandwild.uk 71 

BRIDAL BEAUTY

Q – I’m going to start looking for my wedding dress soon and wondered if you have any advice? It’s never too early to start looking for a wedding dress but if you want to see the most current collections, then visit stores around a year before your nuptials. Most dresses can take between three to five months to order (don’t forget to allow time for your alterations), but some bridal studios have an off-the-peg range to choose from. If this is the first time you have tried on gowns, look for different shapes and styles as you might surprise yourself. After all, it’s not every day you try on wedding dresses, so how can you be sure unless you try? Be guided by your consultant, as they have seen all their gowns on and will know which ones will work for you. We tell our brides, ‘be brave and think outside your comfort zone. You want the wow factor, but you want people to look at you and be impressed, not surprised. Be you, but the best you that you can be!’ Be open to the consultant about your budget, this will help them find styles for you to try without wasting everyone’s time and causing an embarrassing situation when it comes down to the cost. If your budget is flexible, tell them. It doesn’t mean that they will always go to the top of your price range but they will know not to go over it. Here at Brides Visited, we love to put on a dress that ticks all the boxes first so that we have a great benchmark to try and beat. If we can’t improve on that first gown, then you know this could quite possibly be the one. How do you know is a question we are often asked. You will know but not always the first time you put it on. Sometimes you need to try on other gowns, just to check that it’s right, and then put the one back on again to be sure. There is something called the first dress syndrome. This refers to when you cannot believe that the first dress you tried on could possibly be the one. Please don’t fight it! It doesn’t have to be difficult if you have the right consultant with a great collection of gowns, then it could be quite easy. Lorraine Langridge Wedding dress expert www.bridesvisited.co.uk 72

TIME FOR LOVE

Q – We’re thinking of hiring a wedding planner to help us create our dream wedding. What should we ask before booking?

www.kelsiescullyphotography.com

Summer is always a popular season to get married and is a busy time for wedding photographers. A good supplier will always think about their surroundings when taking a shot and incorporate it into their image. Seasons bring so much colour change, and when thinking summer, you automatically think of green grass, blue skies and lots of beautiful flowers in bloom. When booking your venue, take this into account and think does it have an outdoor space where your photographer can take you around and incorporate Mother Nature into your images? You have the advantage of long evenings too, which make for some dusky night photos. Talk to your supplier about the types of shots you want and what you want to be captured. They will always tell you what will and won’t work and will consider where the sun is in the sky and take certain types of pictures when the light is just right. Summer weddings will certainly make for gorgeous images, and

www.irockvisuals.com

IN THE SUMMERTIME

Q – My wife-to-be and I are getting married next summer and would like some shots that reflect the season. Do you have any suggestions?

Your wedding day is a beautiful occasion that should reflect your personalities, tastes and ultimately tell your love story. When hiring a wedding planner, ask them how they can support you to bring your vision to life and what creative ways they can contribute to help you celebrate your uniqueness as a couple? Ask what packages they offer, how they work with other suppliers, how they approach the planning process, as well as what timelines they work to and their level of involvement. It’s also important to find out what measures they have in place for dealing with on-the-day logistics, especially in the case of unexpected eventualities and discuss any previous experience they have and references. In a world full of wedding inspiration, it’s easy to fall into the trap of having a day that is simply put, quite samey, so it’s important to ensure your planner can collaborate with you and your partner to deliver the wedding of your dreams. They should help you make the best wedding decisions, managing your event with utmost attention to detail and throw a creative spin on elements of your day. Glimmers of hope

REGIONAL SHOOT

To celebrate the return of weddings and the gorgeous weather, a group of local suppliers created this styled shoot at The Old Rectory Estate Images courtesy of Kelsie Scully Photography

n light of the recent return of weddings, a team of local suppliers worked together to create this magical styled shoot. The lead event planner, Tutu Ojo from Prime Violet Events, tells us: “With summer in full swing, the days staying brighter and things looking up, I’m reminded of the quote that says ‘love is a springtime plant that perfumes everything with its hope.’ We collaborated with some amazing suppliers to deliver a styled shoot that captures the glimmer of hope we’ve all been handed. As a Surrey-based wedding planner, I know first-hand how much of a roller

coaster the past 15 months have been for couples and fellow industry suppliers, which is why the idea of hope was a no brainer. The shoot took place at The Old Rectory Estate, a stunning Georgian house set in Italianinspired gardens in Surrey. I wanted to showcase something attainable and achievable for real couples that would encourage them to keep their hopes up for their special day because no matter what, it will be beautiful when it comes around. For the suppliers, it was an opportunity for them to express their imagination and demonstrate their abilities.” 75

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE

As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!

Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

78

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 79

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

BE AT PEACE

Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 91

I tried it out on my horribly dry hands and loved the gorgeous aroma, reminiscent of a spa treatment, along with how soothing the ingredients were. This restorative cream treats skin on the body or lips so I was eager to see the results. I’ll admit to being surprised by the warm, spiced and woody fragrance that met me when I opened the tube, and after just two applications, my lips had stopped cracking and felt silky smooth. I must admit, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a cleanser containing kale, spinach and green tea, but it certainly sounded intriguing. Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

COMFORT AND STYLE

Q – I’m getting married next July, and my mum wants to wear something comfortable yet stylish. Do you have any suggestions? Your mother needs to choose a hue that suits her rather than trying to fit in with a colour scheme. She should try different styles to find what she feels most comfortable in. It’s likely to be a long day, so it’s worth considering a second pair of shoes to change into later. The S/S 2022 occasion wear collections will be arriving in stores from the end of December, so start looking straight after Christmas. Good luck! Dee Brain Mother-of-the-bride/groom specialist www.serendipityfashions.co.uk

CLASSIC ROMANCE

DECISIONS, DECISIONS

Q – I’m feeling overwhelmed looking for a hair and makeup artist. How can I find the perfect supplier? Finding the perfect suppliers can be stressful but try to enjoy the process! Picture the morning of your wedding, where you’re sitting with a glass of fizz in your hand surrounded by your best girls and being pampered – it’s so exciting! Start your search by looking for a company that is local to you or your venue. They should have plenty of pictures of their work, so you can get a feel for their style, and have lots of reviews from happy brides. Don’t be afraid to contact companies with any questions you might have. Instagram is a great place to start or a directory site like ours, where you can enter your postcode and find professionals who are nearby along with all their social media handles, pictures, reviews and contact information. Once you’ve found one you like the look of, why not book a trial and use your gorgeous hair and make-up as an excuse for a nice evening out? Flik & Meg Hair and make-up specialists www.peekatreat.com 94

Q – We’ve had to postpone our wedding until winter 2021, and I want to create an on-trend look. What looks and colours are likely to be popular? Remember that trends don’t last forever! Try not to worry about creating a ‘current’ look and go for something that you feel comfortable with. A classic look will never go out of style. Nobody wants to look back at their photographs and see some crazy trend that went out of date ages ago. With a winter wedding, go for subtle smoky eyes and be as daring as you like. Finish with a red carpet lip like Ruby Woo by MAC, or go for a softer nude such as Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury. Amy Lacey Hair and make-up artist www.amylacey.co.uk
