New beginnings W

elcome to the first issue of 2022. It dawned on me over the festive period that in just a few months time I will become Mrs Cullen – eek! I can’t believe how quickly time passes, we’ve been engaged for more than a year now, and it’s just flown by. I’m very organised, much to my fiancé’s dismay, but the closer we get to the day, the more I feel like I’m forgetting something. We’ve booked all of our suppliers, organised all the outfits, so it’s just the small things left to do, but the nerves are starting to set in. My wonderful bridesmaids have been helping keep me calm, but the idea of walking down the aisle without falling over is giving me nightmares. Talking to some of our readers, I know that many of you felt the same in the run-up to your big day, so it’s really nice knowing that I’m not alone. A year later, we moved in together and then went straight into the first lockdown, so it was an interesting way to start our life together, but it made us get to know each other and know we want a future together.” Greg proposed during a holiday to Italy. “It was a massive surprise as I never expected him to chance taking the ring through security on a plane, but it was our first chance to take a holiday since lockdown, and he knew he wouldn’t get another chance for a while,” shares the bride. “He proposed in front of an amazing view as the sunset.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 37

For our favours, we chose personalised shot glasses and a bottle of Limoncello for each table. We do like a party, so shots were inevitable, but I did a speech at the end of the meal explaining the significance of the drink being partly due to our engagement in Italy but also due to the time my dad kept topping up Greg’s drink, and he was too polite to tell him to stop – so ended up drinking three tumblers of it!

Once restrictions had lifted a little, and we could get out of London, we found ourselves regularly escaping to the Surrey Hills. We love wine, so the fact that Denbies Wine Estate was a vineyard was a plus. It just felt like the perfect fit. We also wanted a space that would feel comfortable with 150 people, and Denbies Wine Estate offered an amazing outdoor location as well as beautiful indoor spaces.

We repurposed the lanterns from our ceremony and used them as our centrepieces.

We had natural blooms in keeping with our countryside theme from Cathey’s Flowers. I decided on a sunflower bouquet to mark a special friend who sadly couldn’t be there. We also had some blossom trees at the end of our top table.

Our tables names included pictures of us as children. It was great fun choosing the photos, and we were happy for everyone to have a laugh at our expense! Greg and I went from having no cake to a full treat table. The South East Cakery in Dulwich just made it too hard to choose. We went for a chocolate explosion cake, with six types of brownies with flavours ranging from peanut butter and white chocolate to Rolo rocky road.

REAL WEDDINGS Lots of my friends have already got married, so I wanted a gown that felt unique to me. My dress was by Pronovias, and I felt really special without being uncomfortable. The biggest plus was the fab team at Teokath of London, who sold me the sample dress from the store. I then bought vintage shoes and a headpiece from Lace & Favour.

Denbies Wine Estate managed all our catering. We had a barbecue along with a wide selection of sides, so no one went hungry. Our evening food was a massive cheese tower. We love cheese, and so did our guests, but the tower was huge, so it meant we still got a great amount to take home with us too!

My four bridesmaids chose different styles to suit their shape from David’s Bridal. I loved how beautiful they all looked and that they felt comfortable.

The groomsmen chose blue tweed suits from Moss Bros, and Greg opted for a check suit from Walker Slater. It was a little hot considering it ended up being 23 degrees, but it looked great.

Greg and I were so lucky to have perfect weather, so we could have our outdoor ceremony. Lockdown rules were lifted so all our guests, except friends in the USA, could come. After such an unsure year, we couldn’t believe it was happening, and we just smiled all day.

We knew we wanted a band, as after so long in lockdown, we wanted everyone up dancing and singing along. We found Rockit and loved their repertoire. It had hits from every decade, and they played all the classics without going overly cheesy. Our guests have all said how much they loved the band, and the dancefloor was never empty.

I loved the wine train and the private moments we shared in the wine cellar where we got to catch our breath together. After that, it was all about the party! To make sure Greg couldn’t see me as I walked from the hotel to the ceremony, I was covered with a sheet. It was hilarious! There was a crowd of people walking through the vineyards, who all stopped to watch, clearly thinking I was some sort of celebrity with my sheet – afraid they would have been disappointed, but our guests loved watching it all unfold.

One of Greg’s favourite moments was the many references to Liverpool F.C. I surprised him by having the venue play You’ll Never Walk Alone as we walked back down the aisle. He in turn surprised me, my dad and his groomsmen with personalised Liverpool kits. Some of our friends made it over from Amsterdam and Dubai, which considering the travel restrictions and PCR test rules, we were so amazed people went to the effort.

We stayed over the night before and had a few glasses of bubbles to start the weekend off. I managed to smack my toe on the bed on Friday night, and by the morning, we realised it was completely purple, and I’d likely broken it. Luckily, I wasn’t getting married until three, so we managed to squeeze my foot into my peep toe shoes and practice walking without a limp. The adrenalin kicked in, but we did think for a while I’d have to go in flip-flops, which isn’t ideal when you’re 5ft 2in!

Denbies Wine Estate was brilliant and couldn’t do enough to make the day run smoothly, with backup plans in place, but they always stayed optimistic. Greg Shingler Photography was also incredible. He blended in and was always calm, helpful and happy. All our suppliers were amazing, and after the year everyone had in the industry, the positivity from them all was so genuine and really kept us on track.

eorgie and Lloyd first met and dated when they were teenagers. “We lost touch and didn’t see each other for 13 years,” says Georgie. “We have a mutual best friend whose family member passed away, and Lloyd contacted me to see if I’d heard the news. We met up after that and immediately started where we left off. He is one of the most caring and loving people I’ve ever met. He is an amazing dad to his children too.” “Lloyd surprised me with a night away at Beaverbrook in Leatherhead,” shares the bride. “To put me off the scent, he spent the weeks before saying we couldn’t get married until we’d bought our house, so when he got down on one knee, I was in shock! I cried my eyes out, and we were so happy.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We decided to get married at Beaverbrook because it’s where we got engaged, and it holds a special place in our hearts,” explains Georgie. “We loved the grounds and knew that we wanted to have drinks on the terrace in the same spot where he proposed.” They decided to have a bigger event at Georgie’s parent’s house. “Due to restrictions, we could only have 30 people, so we decided to host an outdoor reception,” adds the bride. “We covered the garden in tissue paper flowers and decorated the marquee with lanterns and fairylights, which looked stunning. Everything was pastel with a touch of pink to tie in with our colour scheme.” For their favours, the happy couple gave their guests photos to take home from the photo booth. “Our flowers were roses, white peonies and foliage from Clapham Flowers,” recalls Georgie. “We also used some of these in the corsages and buttonholes.” Georgie and Lloyd chose a two-tier naked cake from Glutopia. “It was vegan and gluten-free and tasted amazing,” says the bride. “The rest of our catering was provided by the team at Beaverbrook.” Webbs of Weybridge supplied a vintage Jaguar E-Type to transport the lovebirds to and from the venue.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I didn’t wear a traditional dress as I knew I wanted something a bit different,” shares Georgie. “I brought a tulle skirt from H&M’s bridal range and found the most unusual corset from Other Stories that was so different, but it all worked together. Later in the day, I added a denim jacket. I chose Sophia Webster shoes and changed into Converse later in the evening. My earrings brought the colour scheme together and were handmade from Etsy.” Lloyd opted for a navy blue suit with brown Prada shoes. “My little bridesmaids wore ivory dresses, and I bought them butterfly wings so they could turn into fairies at the reception,” explains the bride. “My mum opted for a navy blue dress, and the pageboys had pink braces to tie in with our colour scheme.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “I surprised everyone with a band who performed a song I wrote about our love story,” adds Georgie. “Aymee Weir has such a beautiful voice and she transformed the song I wrote for Lloyd when she sang it. It was just so magical to hear. I also arranged a fun video of celebrities saying congratulations which included Dom Joly, Jenson Button and Victoria Silverstone.” The couple created a help-yourself bar with the help of Cask London that went down a hit with their friends and family. “We also hired a bouncy castle from All Bounce Surrey for the kids,” recalls the

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “The day was just perfect,” says Georgie. “We made it so memorable with lots of surprises for our guests. It was lovely having drinks at Beaverbrook, taking pictures and having an intimate lunch before heading to my parents to join our friends and family. It was so relaxed and great to be with everyone again.” The couple have fond memories from their day. “Driving in the vintage car to get married with my stepdad was such a special moment,” shares the bride. “Lloyd was terrible at driving and stalled it so many times, which was hilarious as we couldn’t get out of the registry office for 10 minutes! We also danced in the rain while Lloyd’s brother played the saxophone, which was truly magical.” “Annie Hoy, my wedding planner, was just amazing,” explains Georgie. “She transformed the garden, and we couldn’t have asked for more. The bar from Cask London added such a great touch to the day as did the photo booth.”

HONEYMOON “We had planned to go to Zighy Bay in Oman, but we haven’t been able to go yet due to COVID-19 restrictions,” recalls the bride. “We did manage to have a long weekend in Dubai, and we stayed at the Andaz where they absolutely spoilt us.” 45

isa and Stuart met at a party. “We didn’t stop talking all evening and ended up arranging our first date,” says Lisa. “It turned out we already had each other’s number as our families had tried to set us up five years earlier, but neither of us had called! In the early days, we always had so much to talk about and things moved very quickly. Stuart is so kind, and we laughed every day. We both just knew we were right for each other. Stuart proposed five months after our first date, five months after that we were pregnant, and three months later, we bought our first house together. Both of us were starting to give up hope of finding the one but when we met, everything just fell into place.”

Stuart proposed on Valentine’s Day in a restaurant. “I had no idea he was going to propose,” shares the bride. “It was so early in the relationship that it hadn’t even crossed my mind. He had been to my parents in secret to ask permission and had designed the engagement ring himself. He had planned to get down on one knee, but it was so busy, and we were seated next to the kitchen door with waiters continuously coming and going. So he put the ring on the table and asked me to marry him! I was so shocked but immediately said yes.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... 49

I initially wanted a simple satin gown, but when I started trying them on, I fell in love with Petro va by Morilee at Aurora Bride. The detail on the bodice was beautiful, and I liked how it was balanced by the elegant ballg own skirt and button details down the back. I accessorised with a delicate necklace and earrings, a long-trimmed veil and a headpiece.

My bridesmaids chose rich green chiffon strapless gowns, and the flowergirl opted for a white satin dress.

Stuart and I were both so happy. I was nervous to walk down the aisle but not about marrying him. As soon we started our vows, everything just went perfectly. We we re really relaxed throughou t the rest of the day, and it was everythin g we dreamed of.

Our wedding was cancelled twice due to COVID-19, so it was lovely to finally have everyone together. Our son was going to be six weeks old on our first date, but instead, he was 18 months old and was able to walk down the aisle. He made himself part of the whole day, from joining in the vows, entertaining our guests during dinner, being involved with the first dance to cutting the cake. It was so special to have him there.

s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.

JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier

design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! COLOUR POP

I’d love to incorporate Pantone’s colour of the year, Very Peri, into my flowers. Do you have any ideas of how I could do this without it being overpowering? Periwinkle blue is one of the trending colours for 2022 and 2023. This soft tone between blue and purple means that you can easily incorporate different shades into your wedding flowers. If you want to add just a hint of the Very Peri without it being overpowering, I would use a base of ivory white flowers and incorporate some pale blue and/or lilac tones. There are several flowers available depending on the season you’re getting married in. Hydrangeas come in both lilac and pale blue and are perfect in bouquets and table centres, but remember they are water-loving flowers and will need a lot of hydration to stay looking their best! Alternatively, look for delphiniums, agapanthus, blue grape hyacinth, roses, alstroemeria, freesias, Veronica, gerberas, hydrangeas, agapanthus, eustomas, lavender, tulips and carnations to name but a few. For a softer look, I would use eucalyptus greenery rather than darker shades, this is a lovely bluey grey leaf and works perfectly with the pastel shades. What questions should we ask a celebrant before booking? Choosing a celebrant for your wedding will allow you to create a personal and bespoke ceremony, giving you the opportunity to include elements that are unique and special to you. There are many suppliers available and it’s important therefore that you find one who you connect with, as they will be responsible for creating, what I consider, to be the most important part of your day. Without a ceremony, you are basically having a party in a very fancy frock! I would always suggest speaking with a celebrant before booking as this will give you a good insight into whether they have the same values as you and can see the vision you wish to create. Find out what style they have, as some celebrants have a particular image. For me, however, the most important questions would include how do the celebrants work with their couples? Will they meet you before the ceremony or plan multiple visits? How much involvement can you have with ideas for the ceremony? Do they work from a script, or will what they write be personal to you? Find out if they can include any religious elements or rituals as some celebrants will do this and others may not. The best advice I can give before you arrange a call with a celebrant is to decide, as a couple, what the most important parts of the ceremony are and what tone you are hoping to create. I’d love to incorporate Pantone’s colour of the year, Very Peri, into my make-up. Do you have any ideas of how I could do this without it being overpowering? You could have so much fun with a ‘Very Peri’ look, just as Lady Gaga did at the House of Gucci UK premiere back in November. Go for periwinkle blue hues with violet-red undertones. What are the latest bridal hair and make-up trends?

Looking back at my wedding 13 years ago, I now realise how much trends have changed. I’m seeing more relaxed hairstyles such as loose tousled curls full of volume that are fluid and move freely. The most popular request is the half up and half down style with lots of twists and turns to add softness around the face. Another on-trend look is a low, simple wrapped bun. Less is most definitely more in 2022. Make-up requests have been focusing on a nude blush colour palette and applied in such a way to naturally enhance the eye shape. To frame the eyes, individual/cluster eyelashes have been strongly requested. As a make-up artist, these are my magic accessory for creating the wow factor for any bride. You don’t have to worry about becoming tearful as this won’t affect their longevity and they will last all day. When it comes to skin, satin textures work beautifully and even though powder is being used it’s kept to a minimum and only used in pocket areas of the face such as around the nose, under the eyes, the centre of the forehead and chin. A popular choice for lips is a subtle nude pink. This tends to enhance your natural lip colour.
