The Talbot, a landmark building in the picturesque village of Ripley, has won Top Venue in Surrey 2020 at the Wedding Dates Awards. The winners were chosen based on reviews from previous brides and grooms. The property has many period features from its 500-year-old history, as well as the benefits of an extensive refurbishment. There are 43 modern bedrooms alongside a restaurant that overlooks the terrace and a cosy bar with traditional log fires. The surrounding area of Ripley is charming and is host to many landmark events such as Ripley Bonfire and the farmer’s market. Ripley is conveniently located between Heathrow and Gatwick and is just 30 minutes from Central London. ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS
Woodhaven Space, a new wedding venue in Horsell, was designed and developed as an eco-friendly home “from scratch” as a blueprint for 21st-century living and a centre for wellbeing. Founder Nicky Yates and her family have several allergies - a driving influence for making Woodhaven a ‘healthy building’. As well as being the home for Nicky’s family, the space is also used for wellbeing events, hen parties and weddings. Nicky tells us: “Woodhaven is an exclusive use peaceful and private space. Based in the heart of Surrey, just 25 minutes from London, it’s perfectly located to capture those idyllic photographs before you and your guests arrive for the wedding reception. This purpose-built, eco-smart venue has wellbeing and sustainability at its foundation. I researched healthy buildings while designing and selecting the exterior fabric and internal finishes to ensure every inch of the building has been meticulously planned to ensure it’s self-sustaining and efficient. The house has a state-of-the-art air system that recycles the air every two hours to ensure the property stays at the same temperature. Woodhaven also has its own water filtration system, which is used to make on-site water. “We have a number of different packages available to make your special day as memorable as possible, but we’re more than happy to create a bespoke package to suit your needs. Our dedicated in-house team will provide you with exceptional and professional event management every step of the way. There are seven rooms available, three on the subterranean level and four on the ground floor, including the dining/board room and the drawing room, which can be combined into one space for large celebrations. We do our best to cater to your needs, whether you’re looking for a celebrant, DJ or magician, we’re here to offer our expertise and help you spend your money wisely. We have a 4K screen and ceiling audio which can be used to incorporate guests who are unable to attend your special day in person. Each room also has a TV that can be used to display some of your favourite images or messages to guests.” Head over to www.woodhaven.space to find out more.

After tying the knot in New York, Chantrelle and Tara had an Art Deco-themed blessing at Langley’s Restaurant Images courtesy of irockvisuals
C
hantrelle and Tara met at work. “It was definitely him who pursued me,” laughs Chantrelle. “As my desk was close to the printer, he would casually swing by quite regularly for a chat. However, I was the one who made the first move on a night out, and the rest is history.” Tara proposed in New York in December, 2016. “We had booked an amazing Mexican restaurant in Times Square for dinner, but on route, he suggested we go past the Rockefeller’s 75ft Christmas tree,” shares the bride. “He kept pushing me towards the tree, and I kept going the other way towards the ice rink, but he persisted and seemed a little irritable because I wasn’t doing what he was suggesting. Bless him, he was so nervous, and I didn’t have a clue! It all made sense when we went to the front of the tree, and standing under 50,000 sparkling fairylights, he started to tell me how he loved me. I was so shocked I didn’t even say yes and just asked ‘really?’ multiple times! It was a dream come true.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
Langley’s Restaurant was local to us and had a beautiful dark wood room, which was perfect for our Art Deco theme. We eloped in New York and decided to have a blessing at Langley’s surrounded by our friends and famil y. The venue provided exquisite food, amazing service and offered a minimum spend rather than a hire fee.
Instead of a cake, we had 120 black and gold macarons in coffee and gin flavour from Mademoiselle Macaron.
My dress was a Pronovias design called Emil y, which was slimline with beautiful lace detailing. I accessorised with earrings from Butler & Wilson and bought some handmade hairpins with diamantés and pearls.
Hannah’s Cake Pops provided custom made Art Deco themed cake pops which we gave our guests as favours.
There is a party store called Partylol a few doors down from the venue, who worked with me to decorate the space. I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted it to look like, and they exceeded my expectation s. We had a balloon arch and banner the width of the dancefloor in black, gold and white.
instead of a flower, he wore from Reiss with a bow tie, and Tara chose a burgundy blazer a diamanté lapel pin.

We were just about to leave for the venue when my dress got caught in the balcony door and wouldn’t re-open! Panic set in pretty quick ly, but my friend was the best and managed to keep me calm. She called Tara and told him I may be delayed as I was trapped but not to worr y as we’d be along shortly! After lots of re-gig ging the door, about 15 minutes later, we managed to break me free and most importantly my dress was unharmed!
I discussed with my photographer, irockvisuals, what I wanted before the day, and he was on top of everything. He reminded us of what we wanted when we got carried away talking to guests and didn’t know what the time was!
Sadly the pandemic hit, so we’re still waiti ng to go on our honeymoon, but we’re hoping to go to the Mald ives next year.

Helen and Sam celebrated their wedding with friends and family at the beautiful Denbies Wine Estate Images courtesy of Lucie Hamilton Photography
H
elen and Sam are both professional classical musicians. “We met in a pub after a concert,” says Helen. “We instantly got chatting and never really stopped!” Sam proposed in May 2019 on a secluded beach in the North of Menorca. “We had participated in a race across the island the day before,” shares the bride. “The beach was deserted, and Sam got down on one knee behind me, but I didn’t turn around for ages! I just assumed he was taking a photo for social media!” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...
37
We both love the area around Denbies Wine Estate and have spent many hours walking, running and cycling nearby. We’re also big fans of their wine and the Surrey Hills Brewery next door and loved the idea of introducing our friends and family to the area. The venue’s wedding planner, Dawn, was an absolute superstar and nothing was too much trouble for her. Her expertise and honest suggestions saved us a great deal of stress.
There is a beautiful fountain in the middle of the conservatory at Denbies Wine Estate, and we wanted to make a feature of it. The venue already had loads of fairylights strung around the glass roof which looked amazing against the night sky.
The cake was expertly created by my mum and was carefully transported all the way from Lancashire without any disasters! It was huge and tasted delicious. 38
The long tables were laid out in a large square with guests sat on both sides. It helped create a wonderful feasting atmosphere and really brought everyone together. We named the tables after places we’ve lived together, and the table plan was beautifully hand-drawn by our friend Tiffy.
We gave Flowers by Elaine free reign over our flowers and only asked that they be appropriate for our winter wedding. We were thrilled with the long lines of ivy intertwined with fairylights, it looked absolutely amazing, and I cried when she brought them in.
The team at Denbies Wine Estate were fantastic, and we enjoyed a lovely afternoon in October tasting the menu options and trying the wine. We were keen to use as many local and seasonal dishes as possible, and we were very happy with our final choices.
REAL WEDDINGS
I wore an ivory capped sleeve lace dress from David’s Bridal. I always imagined I’d go for a 1920s look and knew exactly what I didn’t want. I accessorised with a simple pearl hair clip, my grandmother’s necklace and a bracelet that my oldest friend gave me a few years ago.
The bridesmaids opted for dark green jumpsuits from Phase Eight.
We had so much time to get ready, and so it was all fairly chilled in the morning. We had the best day seeing how everything came together. Dawn at Denbies Wine Estate and Elaine from Flowers by Elaine understood our ideas, and they just made everything so easy. Our photographer, Lucie, was absolutely amazing too and made the day go so smoothly.
Sam chose a navy blue suit from T.M.Lewin. The groomsmen wore their own suits but with matching dark green ties and pocket squares.
We had an awesome live band called Maxamillion in the evening who were a huge hit. They were all super talented and played great music. We also had a jazz trio called Kensington Brass play during the drinks reception, which was held in the venue’s wine cellar.
Having all our friends and family in one place was amazing. My brother came from Mexico, and we had family travel from France and Spain, and my friend, Yoshi, even sent a video from Los Angeles. It was so special. 39
Sam knows folk music star Kate Rusby, and she was kind enough to record an acoustic version of my favourite song that Sam was planning to show me as part of his speech. My dad then surprised us during his speech by announcing that he had been sent a message from a very special guest and proceeded to show a video of congratulations from none other than Kate Rusby! Sam said his jaw hit the floor, and he had to quickly find a way to edit his speech accordingly, but the song still went down well with everyone.
I heard our dog, Barkley, barking outside as the ceremony was finishing. Our wonderful neighbours, who were looking after him, brought him down to see us in a bow tie my mum made him. I couldn’t stop laughing!
All our suppliers were amazing. I had the best time getting ready with Jenny Balding Hairstylist and Frey De Paoli Makeup Artist. They were a great team, and they felt like one of the gang. Frey was heavily pregnant at the time, but luckily my chief bridesmaid is a midwife just in case anything happened!
For our honeymoon, we went to the Dominican Republic to relax in the sun for a week, which was fabulous. We even had a little bonus adventure on our four-hour layover in Miami, where we visited an as-seen-on-TV doughnut shop in the suburbs. The staff were quite surprised to have two British tourists turn up on a quiet Monday afternoon!

C
harlotte and Ben first laid eyes on each other at sixth form in 2009. “We met properly when volunteering with Handicapped Children’s Pilgrimage Trust on a trip to Lourdes,” says Charlotte. “We went from only having said a few words to each other to a couple during our week trip to France.” Ben popped the question at Charlotte’s master’s graduation in 2016. “We’d spent the whole day celebrating, and I was about to return my gown when he insisted we visit a spot for another photo,” shares the bride. “Little did I know he was actually going to propose. My family knew and recorded the whole thing.”
SETTING THE SCENE “Ben attends the Holy Angels Church, so we didn’t consider anywhere else for our ceremony,” explains Charlotte. “We used the small room at the side to provide tea, coffee and home-baked cakes before the service for all our friends and family as many had travelled from Norfolk and Suffolk. For our reception, we looked at a few options, but Weybourne House won hands down! It’s a hidden gem with some beautiful spaces both inside and out, and of course, it’s right beside the River Wey. They took care of all the food, and it was delicious! We had a huge cheese board in the evening, which we had great feedback on, although I never got to eat any as I was too busy dancing!” The happy couple organised a barge trip after the ceremony. “Our guests had drinks in the bar area while we took our National Trust boat trip from Guildford town centre past the venue and back again,” adds the bride. “Our loved ones stood outside as we stepped off the boat onto a red carpet. The trip was wonderful and our favourite part of the day.” “Our favours were Cancer Research UK pins and broaches,” recalls Charlotte. “Ben’s mum, unfortunately, passed away from cancer the Christmas before our wedding, so it was important for there to be things that remembered her.” Charlotte and Ben named their tables after their favourite places in Surrey and Hampshire. “We thought it would be nice to share a little bit of where we live with the people who aren’t local,” says the bride. “Our table plan, invitations and place names were designed and printed by Aimee Paints Illustration. The original pencil drawing she created is now hung in our house.” “Our centrepieces were beautiful blue jugs filled with yellow flowers sitting alongside pictures of our favourite places,” Charlotte shares. “I loved our flowers, and I’ve since had my bouquet preserved. We used Cathey’s

Flowers, who we met at a wedding fair.” The cake was created by Jeni’s Cakes & Flowers. “It was a mixture of flavours and was a design masterpiece,” explains the bride. “We have always loved ducks, so it had bright yellow ducks on the top and tiers surrounded by mini eggs and chocolate flakes. Our favourite was the chocolate orange tier!” To decorate the space, the couple incorporated their love of sweet treats. “We had pots of chocolate mini eggs on the bar as well as a sweet table as I’m known for my love of Pick & Mix,” adds Charlotte. “We also made our guests yellow party bags for the drive home.” “We used a small company from Guildford called James Lewis Executive Cars for our transport,” recalls Charlotte. “He took us from the church to the centre of Guildford where we boarded the barge that was all set up with champagne for us.”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “My dress came from a cancer charity called Big C,” recalls Charlotte. “It was quite cheap, so I bought it and had it altered, and it was perfect! My wedding shoes came from Clarks, and they were so comfy that I didn’t remove them all day or night.” Ben and the groomsmen wore suits from Slater Menswear. “He also had a best woman who chose a navy dress that was quite similar to the bridesmaids’ dresses,” says the bride. “I had my sister and two children as bridesmaids. The children’s dresses were from Monsoon, and I managed to get an almost identical adult version from ASOS.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The lovebirds had the perfect wedding. “It’s a day we both look back on and can’t stop smiling,” shares Charlotte. “The morning after the wedding, I wanted to do the whole thing again! We loved the boat ride and having a moment by ourselves just after we were married.” “A very funny story came out on our big day,” laughs the bride. “In a little bag that my sister made and gave everyone for my family hen party, there was a small yellow bath bomb wrapped up beautifully. A family member thought it was a sweet and saved it for later. When she ate it, she obviously realised it wasn’t food as soon as she began foaming at the mouth and, of course, a drink of water only made it worse!” Charlotte’s sister did a speech that everyone loved. “She works in radio production and had interviewed lots of people at the wedding and those who couldn’t make it,” explains Charlotte. “She then compiled these into a wonderful recording that she played, and it was wonderful.”
HONEYMOON “We went on a minimoon to Venice for five days,” recalls the bride. “The weather was divine, as was the food, drinks and scenery, and we loved every minute of it!” 45

A DREAMY DAY
Mariam and Ahmed had an intimate ceremony at Weybridge Register Office Images courtesy of Trilion Productions
M
ariam and Ahmed met in Doha, Qatar, through mutual friends. “I thought we’d end up being friends when we first met, but Ahmed continued to pursue me in romantic ways,” says Mariam. “He would spontaneously take me to the beach where we would have food and talk until the late hours of the night. I was drawn to his strong character, persevering nature and gorgeous beard!” “We knew when we got into a relationship that it was either going to lead to marriage or nothing at all, as I guess that’s just how we do it as Muslims, so there wasn’t much of a surprise when he proposed,” shares the bride. “He said it was time for us to take our relationship to the next level, and I agreed, so that weekend we looked for a diamond to set in a custom made ring and told our parents via video chat.” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day... We had our reception at home, and my mum and sister got really creative. My mum should have been an events planner as she pulled the whole thing off while also cooking a full three-course meal, making our cake and decorating our living room to look like a wedding reception venue!
Our first wedding date was in October 2019 , but we had some complications with visas, so we then fixed the date for April 2020, but COVID-19 meant we had to cancel. We eventually planned a registry office ceremony in February 2021 under exceptional circumstances.
Ahmed chose a blazer and trousers from Mango, and the rest of his outfit was from Zara.
We were bombarded with bouquets that my aunts sent through the post!
I wore the dress that we bought for our original hotel wedding , so it was a bit extra for a registry office ceremony, but I was in love with it, and I’m so glad I got the opportunity to wear it! Designed by David Tut era, I found it at Brides Visited in Ashtead. My biggest bridal inspiration was the Du chess of Cambridge, so I tried to ema nate her with the train and French silk veil. I finished the look with statement porcelai n earrings and a handmade tiara.
My mum made sure the driver used ivory ribbon on the car to match my dress. Liberty Executive Cars did a superb job of getting me to my pre-ceremony interview on time, and our driver saved the day by keeping the car warm with heated seats!

Due to the pandemic, we had to downsize our 150 guest list to four people, yet it was still wonderful and so special. I’m sure all couples are feeling frustrated, we did for a while, especially with our visa situation, but our micro wedding was so beautiful and personal. I don’t like crowds, so there was somewhat a relief knowing I had just immediate family to witness our ceremony.
Andrew and Frances, our lovely registrars, were great. The deputy registrar had a good laugh at our dreadful signatures that we signed in the register! Our vows and ring exchange was beautiful, and luckily the sun was shining when we had our photos taken .

A BUDDING Tips for finding the perfect flowers

FLOWERS
BOUQUETS AND BUTTONHOLES
www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk
“We’re so excited to be helping our clients plan their big days again. We’re found that little has changed in their tastes, there’s no individual theme trending, but we have noticed our brides and grooms seem all the more determined to make everything romantic. After such a year, perhaps it’s the vibe that matters more than the visuals.” – Elise Ciampaglia from Florescence. “I’m predicting that the pocket square boutonnière is going to be the next big trend, and it’s something I absolutely love.” – Paula from Floral Alchemy.
www.thecoventgardenflowershop.co.uk
“We’re definitely seeing smaller but more intimate weddings at the moment. We’ve seen a lot of very whimsical, flowing and natural blooms with an earthy and calming colour scheme.” – Sharon Monk from Longacres Garden Centre.
www.longacres.co.uk and www.gmgcreative.co.uk
www.floralalchemy.co.uk and www.queenbeaphotography.co.uk
“I’ve had very few weddings in the last 12 months since most brides have postponed to 2022 and even 2023! The ones I have done required the bare minimum of a bridal bouquet and a few buttonholes. As far as colour trends go, they were all white/blush with one stand our exception of sunflowers for a woodland reception. I have found that my brides rarely follow trends and often have their own strong sense of style.” – Paula Reeks from Floral Alchemy.
www.ruffelsflowers.co.uk
“There is a definite trend towards flowers that mean something to the couple personally. Many are also more aware of the environmental impact and are moving towards locally sourced options and an abundance of greenery. Brides are keen on a natural style for their bouquet, with some opting for smaller arrangements and a natural bohemian look with a combination of dried and fresh flowers.” – Lottie Hawkins from Ruffels Flowers.
www.murrayclarke.co.uk and www.florescence.org
ince the pandemic started, we’ve seen a change in styles, trends and colour schemes. To help get an idea of what future weddings may look like, we asked some of the best Surrey-based suppliers for their advice.
“When restrictions were in place, brides were asking for small bouquets, but now things are getting back to normal we’re seeing more voluptuous versions. The trending style is still a more natural look using seasonal flowers. I like to include larger blousy blooms such as peonies, roses, dahlias or hydrangeas along with smaller delicate versions, often with a lovely scent like lisianthus, freesias, astilbes and gypsophila. I usually add pale green eucalyptus instead of strong green leaves as it gives a softer look.” – Annabel Grange from Butterflies and Bows. “Micro weddings are becoming more popular due to COVID-19, but I’m finding that my couples are doing the total opposite and are going for extravagant big, bold flowers in classic pinks and whites.” – Maxine Cole from Chair Cover Dreams. 53
BACKDROPS “The moongate archway has definitely taken over from the flower wall but in a more intimate way with lots of foliage.” – Sharon from Longacres Garden Centre.
www.longacres.co.uk and www.gmgcreative.co.uk
www.ruffelsflowers.co.uk
“I think that couples are moving away from the statement flower walls and are looking for more natural garlands and arches. Living trees of branches interwoven with blooms and lights make a beautiful organic statement.” – Lottie from Ruffels Flowers.
“Drapes and fairylight backdrops are still very popular, especially for autumn and winter weddings. They’re also really useful in village halls to hide equipment and notice boards or in properties without a focal point.” – Annabel from Butterflies and Bows.
www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk
“Backdrops are definitely a big yes at the moment. Couples are looking at flower arches and walls with soft, flowy drapes.” – Maxine from Chair Cover Dreams.
“I’m seeing a move towards free-standing arches. These can be used for a civil ceremony then behind moved behind the top table for photographs. They’re generally easy to move to different locations, which can make your pictures far more interesting. We decorate them with silk and/or fresh flowers and greenery, but we also do sculpted balloon arches which can have flowers added.” – Annabel from Butterflies and Bows.
“As a result of COVID-19, we’re doing more outside weddings, so we’ve seen lots of lanterns, moss and tea lights used to create a very romantic setting.” – Sharon from Longacres Garden Centre.
“Our clients continue to ask for a variety of styles. Some want bright, bold statement flowers, including brazen oranges and striking deep purples, while others are opting for more soft, pale and almost watery tones. A mixture of textures seem to matter to everyone, and many clients are asking for dried or preserved elements to help reduce their environmental impact.” – Elise from Florescence. 54

VENUE STYLING
“I’m sure venue styling will make a big return as lockdown relaxes, and we can get back to large guest numbers.” – Paula from Floral Alchemy.

“Bold stands where flowers can create a luxurious feel and bring opulence into the room is a great idea. Think about hanging flowers from the ceilings or beams.” – Maxine from Chair Cover Dreams. “Sustainability and personalisation of the wedding flowers is another area that’s becoming popular. Placing potted plants on tables that both the couples and friends and family can take home with them is a great way of making your wedding day live on.” – Lottie from Ruffels Flowers.

www.florescence.org
www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk
“We have seen lots of pastels coming through with pinks, whites, peaches and pale blues. Brides are going for a large variety of flowers rather than sticking to just a couple of choices.” – Sharon from Longacres Garden Centre.
“Whatever our clients choose, we just love how everyone likes such varying things. You never know what your next couple will like, and it’s truly wonderful to help them create their special days.” – Elise from Florescence.
“Older venues or barns have pillars, post railings and alcoves which can be decorated. Opt for flowers and greenery, these will look gorgeous, especially when you add LED lights to them. Trees and bushes also look pretty at night and can be decorated with lights or uplighters.” – Annabel from Butterflies and Bows.
“Modern venues and marquees will have less natural features, so to create a strong impression use large centrepieces. Often less is more, and just using a voluminous centrepiece with a large top table flower display and pedestal flowers on each side will create a real showstopper. Where there are fixture points available, consider a large horizontal flower hoop as a focal point.” – Annabel from Butterflies and Bows.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES
UNDER PRESSURE
Q – The wedding is getting closer, and we’re feeling incredibly anxious about having our photo taken! Can you offer us some advice? Many of my clients talk to me about being nervous when having their photo taken and feeling unphotogenic and uncomfortable when posing. Getting to know your photographer is key as it will help you relax while they work. You shouldn’t feel rushed by them, and they should assist with how you should stand and where your hands should go.
www.irockvisuals.com
www.irockvisuals.com
Our experts solve your problems
I love to capture natural shots that show raw emotion. I often say to my clients go for a walk, have a chat and forget I’m even there. This is a great way to warm up before the more formal shots are taken. I also suggest booking a pre-wedding shoot before the big day. It gives you the chance to get to know each other and to familiarise yourself with their style of photography. Eray Kaya Photographer www.irockvisuals.com
SWAY TO THE MUSIC
Q – We’re thinking of booking a dance teacher for our big day. How do we choose a great supplier? The most important thing is that you and your teacher are on the same page. If you have an idea of what you’re looking for, then ask them about their packages or the one-off lessons that they teach and whether the timings and cost suit your availability and budget. If you’re unsure where to start, ask if they will meet you both first to talk it through. At First Dance Studios, we offer a free initial consultation regardless of whether you know what you’re looking for or not. We find that way you get to meet the teacher beforehand, chat through how you see the end product, get over the nerves of seeing the dance studio and then book in the dates so you can tick it off your to-do list! Meeting beforehand puts couples at ease, and by the end, they are really looking forward to lessons and feel reassured. We’ve done consultations over the phone, Zoom, in a cafe and at the pub – we love them! Emma Brewer First dance specialist www.firstdancestudios.co.uk 59

Yes, it absolutely is! Pre-wedding shoots are a great idea, especially if you’re not used to having your photograph taken or feel slightly awkward in front of the lens. It’s your chance to work with your photographer in a relaxed environment and have fun with ideas. Every couple is different, so an approach that works for some may not be suitable for everyone. Some couples love PDA, or like to incorporate their hobbies, and others just want to feel like they’re not on a photo shoot. This is a great time for you and your supplier to work out what best suits you and how to help you relax and enjoy having your picture taken. It’s also a lovely opportunity to get to know your photographer. I’ve heard so many anecdotes during pre-shoots that by the time the wedding day arrives, I feel like an old friend. Plus, you’ll get a beautiful set of pictures, which are great for savethe-date cards or a signing board on the wedding day. Denise Winter Photographer www.denisewinterphotography.co.uk 60
LET THE FUN BEGIN!
Q – My partner and I want something a bit different for our ceremony. Do you have any fun ideas that we can incorporate into our service? Having an independent celebrant will enable you to do anything – that alone is a bit different as no rules apply! You will be free to design your ceremony exactly as you want. The fun thing I love to do is a toast ceremony. This might be a G&T ceremony, or a cocktail, or any tipple you like – I’ve even performed a tea and cider one! It brings everyone together in congratulating you ahead of walking down the aisle together. I make you a drink, we talk about what it symbolises for you, and you raise a glass to each other to wish you a happy marriage from there on in. Another fun thing to do is to hide the rings! When I ask for the rings, no one knows who has them (apart from the best man and me). I ask them to all look under their chairs, and the lucky person who finds them has to shout Bingo! It’s silly and leaves everyone grinning and giggling – it’s so much fun. Lastly, why not try a sing-along? Whack up the volume, throw in a great tune and the energy skyrockets! I’ve tried and tested a few, and honestly, the feel-good factor is out of this world. The Carpenter’s On Top of the World is one you can’t help but grin ear to ear with, and another more modern one is Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey. Of course, what you pick will reflect who you are as a couple and what your values are.

REGIONAL SHOOT
A Surrey based team of talented suppliers worked together with Helen Noble (Celebrant of Surrey) to create this gorgeous set of images taken at Bluebell Wood Images courtesy of Jason Leaman Photography
P
hotographed in a beautiful Bluebell Wood in Surrey, this styled shoot was put together by local celebrant Helen Noble. “As lockdown lifted, we saw nature through a lens of gratitude and freshness yet also through the lens of uncertainty due to the pandemic,” says Helen. “As a celebrant that specialises in love stories, I embrace that life is in the moment and what better way to showcase that than in Surrey’s Bluebell Wood in the moment of their full bloom? In the Surrey Hills alone, we have 163 square miles of outstanding beauty, which is just magical. I love architecture, design,
fabrics and textures and this shoot celebrates all of that. We have such incredible suppliers in our lovely region, and everyone involved covers the area, which was really important to me. This time of year, the bees are just coming out, so I commissioned a bee-inspired hand-painted jacket from Depicted Designs, sourced honey from local beekeepers, Bee Friends, and incorporated touches of gold throughout, which contrasted with the silver jewellery. Everything in this shoot brought something to the table and showcased Surrey in all its glory.” 63

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
L
ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup
plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.
THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 66
at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY
Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.
Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.
Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.
We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.
Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!
This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 67

fter a difficult year for the wedding industry, local suppliers came together to create this woodland wedding scene. “We wanted to inspire modern couples to believe in themselves and their vision, to enjoy planning their wedding in their own way, without a care of what others may think,” says wedding planner Lucia Penman from Celebrating Love. “The bridal reveal is such a special moment for couples, so we decided to incorporate it into the shoot followed by Emily and Jake walking down the aisle together. It’s modern, authentic, and there is something incredibly soothing about making an entrance with the person you are about to commit your life to. The atmosphere is relaxed, consisting of an outdoor ceremony with fairylights and frames hanging from the trees, vintage
accessories, and tall hand-moulded candles, foliage and blush blooms that make this a truly stunning wedding scene.” Photographer Paul Placitelli adds: “Once I learnt of Lucia’s vision for this shoot at the stunning Stanhill Court Hotel, it was the perfect opportunity to blend the classic theme of the venue with the charming gardens and rustic woodland setting of the hotel’s grounds. The photography has a bright, airy, classic chic look, mirroring the atmosphere of the bridal suite, transitioning to the rustic feel of the woodland outdoor ceremony. The pictures capture the vision perfectly and show couples how different themes can be blended together to create a magical day.” 69

STRUT YOUR STUFF Find out more about local suppliers
W
ith so many different styles and themes to choose from, creating the perfect wedding day look can be stressful! To help, we’ve rounded up some of the best local suppliers and asked them more about their companies.
Q – Tell us about your company. Lucia Penman Hair & Make-up is a wedding service specialising in bridal make-up and hairstyling for relaxed, natural and boho-modern brides. Q – What services do you offer couples? I offer hair and make-up for the bride and bridal party. An important part of my job is listening to my clients to find out what look they want to achieve and delivering exactly that.
Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is when I see the bride dressed, looking all glammed up, and it feels like my work has come to life. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a hair and make-up artist? On the morning of the wedding, surround yourself with positive vibes and people that are your best cheerleaders.
01276 856 308 | www.motherofthebridechobham.co.uk @melitaboutiquechobham Q – Tell us about your company? Melita is situated in the delightful village of Chobham in Surrey, and we’re proud to say we celebrated 40 years of trading last year. Despite the deceiving frontage, the shop is extremely large and is spread across two floors housing one of the largest selection of occasion wear in Surrey and the surrounding counties. Q – What services do you offer? We carry collections from all the leading designers and can offer a choice of styles to suit different tastes and sizes from six to 18. We stock the matching hats and hatinators, again in a variety of designs. We also have a fabulous range of shoes and bags only found in select independents by Lisa Kay and Elegante. These are made to our choice of colours and designed to complement the outfits. As most outfits need a slight tweak, we have the added advantage of our own in house seamstress who works on-site six days a week. Q – How long before the wedding should mother-of-the-brides/ grooms get in touch? It’s important to allow yourself plenty of time to search for your outfit, firstly to avoid a last-minute panic buy but also to allow for alterations. Stock is pre-ordered twice a year and once sold, often can’t be replaced.
I would suggest you start your search a good few months before the wedding, as some people buy as far as a year in advance. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? We love the unpredictability of each day, as every customer is so different and it’s such a personal experience helping them to choose their outfit for such a special occasion. For some, it can be very emotional seeing their transformation and the relief that they can relax and know they’re going to feel fabulous and make their son or daughter proud. Q – Do you have any top tips? The most important thing is to choose an outfit and shoes that you feel comfortable and confident wearing. It’s a long day, and you need to be able to relax and not be conscious of what you’re wearing. If you need an opinion when choosing your outfit, take the advice of one or two-valued people accompanying you to your appointment. Too many people will cause confusion and conflicting ideas. Most importantly, always shop with an open mind. It’s often what you would least expect that you will end up purchasing.

Q – Tell us about your company. I trained as a beauty therapist and hairdresser after leaving school. This was a great introduction to make-up, but at 18, I went on to do TV, film and prosthetics at Shepperton Studios. I have always loved make-up and have been passionate about skincare from a very early age. I always felt a pull to anything wedding related. I love the buzz it gave, so it made complete sense to just jump in and become self-employed offering bridal hair and make-up, and that was around 18 years ago. It’s been a wonderful journey, and I’m so pleased I did it. I also love doing my freelance TV and photo shoot work during quieter periods. Q – What services do you offer couples? I offer bridal hair and make-up for the bride, bridesmaids, mothers, aunties, cousins and a little dash of sparkle and gloss for the flowergirls. I am there for anyone who wants me to give them that luxury touch! Even the guys have been known to sit in my chair for a quick brow groom and a dab of concealer! Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Ideally, communication should start around nine months before the date. It’s good to have a chat on the phone to build up a picture of what my bride is wanting and go over any dates that we are available for trials, which would usually take place around three months before the wedding day. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I adore being part of such a special day. It still excites me and is a real honour. At my favourite wedding we were forecast very heavy snowfall that coming week. It was a last-minute booking so I had not met the bride and wouldn’t be meeting her until the wedding day. Because of the weather that was due, she asked me to come stay at the venue the day before as her fiancé had hired out the property for three days, so I had my own king size suite! I sat with their friends at the pre-wedding meal the night before and was made to feel so welcome, and the snow was incredible! Thank goodness I arrived the day before as it was a true winter wonderland. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a make-up artist? Look at their work and ask as many questions as you can. Recommendations are vital. I have done lots of weddings where the bridesmaid at a previous wedding has loved my work and booked me for their big day, which is really lovely for me as an artist.

Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? Our favourite part has to be when we have suggested a dress for a bride to try and they would often say that they would never have considered it and yet it’s the one! It’s such a great feeling. Q – Do you have any top tips for brides? Our top tip is to have an idea of what you like but keep an open mind. We tell our brides to be brave when choosing their dress, think slightly outside the box as you want the wow factor but don’t need to change who you are to get it.

All the following are unsolicited testimonials received during May 2021 “I just wanted to email and say a huge thank you because we had a fantastic time in your store yesterday. Mum felt fantastic and so special and has come away with a gorgeous outfit. When we went to pay, we also spotted a perfect outfit for my Nana and bought it on an impulse... We loved spending the afternoon in your treasure trove store!” Olivia S., Cambridge “Just wanted to let you know how thrilled I am with my recent purchases from your Day Wear collection. I first discovered Serendipity two years ago, when my Mum bought her wonderful mother-of-the-groom outfit in store. I was passing by chance on Thursday, so popped in and was delighted to leave with 7 gorgeous items...” Anna E., Nutrivaval, Guildford “I visited your shop yesterday to look for an outfit for my daughters wedding which hopefully will take place in July of this year. I would just like to say a big thank you to Anne for making me feel so relaxed and comfortable during my visit and for all her help in assisting me to find the perfect dress. I am delighted with my choice... Many thanks for a wonderful service.” Gillian P., Epsom “Please thank Mary for all her help today. I was able to purchase my mother of the bride outfit and hat. I found it a wonderful and fun experience and Mary, whilst offering constructive advice was not at all pushy and I felt under no obligation to buy anything. This was the third place I had visited and needless to say the other two venues fell far short of today’s experience. It’s amazing how a few tweaks and clever tricks can make someone feel the most incredible and beautiful version of themselves. Everyone deserves to feel special on their big day, and that’s my goal! Q – What services do you offer couples? I offer brides and their parties all aspects of hair and make-up as well as being there in the run-up to the day if they need any advice. I’m also a hairdresser working out of a salon in Cranleigh, so I can assist with any cuts and colours. Q – How long before the wedding should couples book? Get in touch as soon as you have a date if you know you want to book me for your big day as my diary fills up fast. I also recommend brides having a trial three to six months before the wedding. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? I honestly don’t have a favourite part. People ask me all the time if I prefer hair or make-up, and the answer is that I love both. Although having said that, once the bride puts her dress on and sees herself for the first time, it’s pretty amazing. It never fails to make me well up and is such a magical moment. Q – Do you have any top tips for couples looking for a make-up artist? Decide what matters most to you and set your budget accordingly. Sometimes it’s very easy to get lost in the vast options and forget that it’s all about you. There are no right or wrong decisions because it will be the most incredible day of your lives, come what may.

Q – Tell us about your company? Serendipity Fashions began in 1988 with a sell-out fashion show at the Ben Travers Theatre, Charterhouse, with all proceeds going to CRC. The shop opened in Chilworth, and three years later, we bought out the bridal shop next door as we needed the extra space. For many years the Serendipity Charity Fashion Show was a big event, always selling out and raising large amounts for charity, and I was awarded The Mayors Award for services to the community.

Q – What services do you offer? We specialise in occasion wear for mother-of-the-bride/groom, guests and social events such as Ascot and visits to the Palace but also offer a full range of separates for everyday wear. Q – How long before the wedding should mother-of-the-brides/ grooms get in touch? In a normal year, they should shop months ahead to get the best choice of sizes and styles. For a summer wedding, this would be straight after Christmas. Mums often get caught out by waiting for the causal wear to arrive in stores. Q – What’s your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of the job is in helping women to look their best. Especially for such an important occasion as their son or daughter’s wedding. 87

Q&A
Local experts offer advice on hair and make-up trials
HAIR GODDESS
Q – What can I expect from my hair trial? Your hair trial is your opportunity to try a few different styles that you have in mind. It’s best to wait until near the wedding, and you have your dress before booking. The trial can take place anywhere between five months and five days before your special day. I always recommend having a picture of your dress handy, so the stylist can see the neckline. Also, bring along any accessories that you’re planning on wearing, like a veil, tiara or headband. Generally, a trial will be done on clean, dry hair and several styles will be tried. It’s also a good time to discuss the final details of the day, confirming timings and payments. Bring someone from the bride squad that you trust for an option or even to have their trial done, as this will create a great atmosphere and tick another job off the list. NATURAL BEAUTY
Q – What can I expect from my make-up trial? Firstly, I always ask my brides what does your make-up look like every day? I want to know what you look like at work, day-to-day and what you envision for your wedding. You should look like the very best version of yourself, not someone entirely different. Look for some pictures that show the style you want to show your artist. We can discuss your skincare routine, skin concerns or problems you may suffer with, such as redness or shine. We can also talk about whether or not you want to avoid false lashes. It’ll be a fun and exciting experience, so above all, just enjoy it! Amy Lacey Hair and make-up artist www.amylacey.co.uk

SILKY SMOOTH
I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

MAKING

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks
92
INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.
A
ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.
I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.
If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.
What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.
Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.
How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.
What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.
What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.
How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?
For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk
What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 93
