79 Boho-inspired dresses in luxe lace and flowing fabrics that were made for fun and flirting.

It’s official, I’m a married woman – eeek! After being engaged for nearly 18 months, and with all of the lockdowns and uncertainty, it’s been quite a rollercoaster of emotions, but I couldn’t have asked for a better day. It seems like just yesterday that I was telling our loved ones that we were engaged, and here we are as husband and wife (I don’t think I’ll ever get used to saying that). My number one piece of advice is to enjoy the process and make it about what you want. We found that some of our nearest and dearest were quite vocal about what they wanted and how the day should be, which can feel quite overwhelming at times but try to remember it’s meant to be about you and your partner. Pick things that you want, and that will make you both happy and forget about everyone else.

please www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-weddingvisit Melissa x Melissa Cullen,

The day goes by in a flash so take some time out just the two of you to have a chat and take everything in. Things will go wrong, but that’s okay. On the day, you won’t notice the little things, and all that will matter will be celebrating with your friends and family. Surround yourself with people that you love and trust. My bridesmaids were amazing at keeping my nerves in check and making sure I felt like a special bride. I couldn’t have asked for better, and I can’t wait to look back on our photographs with them.

This issue is full of inspiration, we have a feature focusing on handmade Surrey products, a guide to planning your big day, and we showcase some glorious gardens. If that’s not enough, we also have showstopping dresses and wow-factor honeymoon destinations. you’d like your wedding featured in the magazine or have been involved with a styled shoot, Senior

LOOKING YOUR BEST

Eray tells us: “I’ve shot in some stunning places, documenting all sorts of people at different occasions. I’ll travel to wherever you want me to go, and I’m happy to discuss all your specific photo requests with you.”

County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews went along to check out the delicious food fare on offer: “The Grade II listed building feels instantly warm and welcoming, and when combined with the Coppa Club’s own brand of stylish and modern décor it’s definitely a place I wanted to spend time in. Like the atmosphere, the welcome was also warm and I couldn’t fault the staff who were wonderfully charming and attentive. Settled at our comfy table by the the window, I was able to admire the laid-back covered garden terrace, complete with a firepit, and dining pods on the lawn. It’s just as easy to imagine balmy summer nights here accompanied by friends and a glass of Pimms, as it is cosy winter evenings snuggled around the heaters. I was already feeling pretty envious of Haselmere’s residents, for whom this community gem is on the doorstep.

“The menu is focused on European, British and Mediterranean dishes, and I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken with chilli mayo small plate for starters, followed by the bucatini carbonara – hands down the best carbonara I’ve ever eaten! While my eyes may have admittedly been bigger than my belly when I ordered the truffle, pecorino fries, it nevertheless had to be done! The basque cheesecake with orange crème fraîche was for dessert and was absolutely delicious – the perfect end to a delightful meal. The highlight? This has to be the incredible cocktails. I got to sample both the innovative alcoholic and non-alcoholic options in the shape of the tiramisu and popstar martinis. The latter being a booze-free version of the much-loved pornstar martini. I loved them so much I’m sorely tempted to attempt a recreation at home!

Denbies Wine Estate has launched a new Wine Library. With clever use of shapes and materials, the design of the Wine Library reflects all aspects of the wine making process. The curvature of the building replicates a wine barrel, together with a wall lined with antique riddling racks. The main feature of the Wine Library is the magnificent floor-to-ceiling wine wall, displaying a range of Denbie's vintages dating back to 1993. An enomatic wine machine is the central focus of the wall, where customers can select from a choice of wines to taste by the glass.

JOIN THE CLUB

The latest addition to the Coppa Club family, The Georgian, opened its doors on 3rd May. Located in the heart of the Surrey Hills in leafy Haselmere, this is the 10th property to join the portfolio of clubhouses and is the brand’s third hotel location.

The Wine Library is the perfect spot for hotel residents to unwind and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of the estate. It can also be hired for exclusive use for tastings and private dining. CHERISHED MEMORIES

Rebecca Douglas, a celebrant based in Claygate, is offering our readers a 10 per cent discount off of her services. Rebecca tells us more: “My company, RD Ceremonies, is my biggest passion. I love being swept away by the performers on stage into the land of make-believe, so it’s no surprise therefore, that I trained as an actress and have performed in several productions up and down the country before becoming a PA and then a primary school teacher. I always wanted to be a celebrant but never had the confidence to try. However, after almost 10 years of teaching and becoming a mum, it felt like it was the right time to put my dream into action. Being with people and getting to know them is a big part of my job. I adore a love story, so I get really invested and enjoy turning your story into something creative for your ceremony. I chose a celebrant for my wedding as we wanted a memorable and personal moment to share with our friends and family, so I understand the importance of the role. I have the best job in the world, so you can rest assured that I will create a meaningful ceremony for you.”

Wotton House dates back to the 16th-century when it was sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family. John Evelyn was inspired by what he had discovered on his travels and constructed an Italian garden and temple, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, which was soon joined by a parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain. Since then, the estate has been passed through the Evelyn family, who have all been passionate about preserving John’s legacy, whilst adding their own touches to the estate. Guests are welcome to explore the 13 acres of gardens, which have been deemed worthy of protection and individually Grade II listed. Always and forever

Olga and Dan met at work. “We bonded over our love of work and music,” says Olga. “Dan proposed when I was pregnant with our second daughter. We went for a babymoon in Brighton, and whilst walking around, he suggested buying an engagement ring and making an honest woman out of me.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

Olga and Dan shared their special day with friends and family at Wotton House Images courtesy of Juliet Lemon Photography

37 REAL WEDDINGS

Dan’s mum, Diane, made a smaller fruit cake which was also white with a black sash and bow around it. Both cakes were a huge success! We went to an open day at Wotton House a few years ago and fell in love with the ceremony room. It looked stunning decorated with lights and foliage and we loved the historic pillars.

38

To continue our colour scheme, we chose gold cutlery and charger plates with beading from Couvert Bespoke Event Hire.

Shelley’s Cakes made a stunning cake for christening, daughter’sour so we asked her to create a design for our wedding day. The bake was all white with gold petals and a black sash.

For our favours, we opted for shot glasses that were engraved with our names and wedding date. Our guests were asked to take shots from these during the wedding speeches, which is a Polish tradition. We also had biscuits with ‘Always & Forever’ written on them. The children were given black velvet bags with their names on which were full of toys to keep them busy.

Dan and I really wanted black round vases with white flowers as our centrepieces. We weren’t able to find the vases anywhere, so we ended up buying plain versions and spray painting them. We’re really pleased we did it ourselves. The next morning we gave out the vases and flowers to the guests who stayed overnight. Guests commented weeks later that the flowers lasted for weeks, and they loved having the vases as a reminder of the wedding. Our place names from ByBlossom Wedding Stationery were black and gold with font that matched our wedding invitations.

Dan opted for a black velvet blazer from Well Suited for Men Ltd to help him stand out, while the groomsmen wore black suits.

I was very stressed on the morning of the wedding as I had to ensure our daughters were also ready, but luckily, our family helped out. I was worried about our youngest daughter, Sienna, misbehaving during the ceremony and pacing up and down the aisle. However, both girls behaved perfectly, and we couldn’t be more proud.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

My maid-of-honour, Teresa, chose a black off-the-shoulder dress. Our two daughters wore white dresses with black bows for contrast.

Mike Taylor Sax played during the ceremony and drinks reception and he was fantastic. All of our guests loved Mike, and we hope that he will play again at our next big birthday party. He read the crowd perfectly and made a few of us boogie during the drinks reception! I wore a black and white dress by House of Mooshki called Blake. I found it on Instagram whilst scrolling through wedding pages and fell in love with it. I drove over two hours to Maisie Darling Bridal Boutique in Leicestershire to see it. Even though I tried on a few others, I knew it was a dress for me. It had a removable overskirt which I took off after the ceremony. and I accessorised with a tiara, necklace and a bracelet I bought in Poland.

Justin Saul Magic entertained our guests during the reception and wedding breakfast with his fun magic tricks. In the evening, we had Motown Gold perform our favourite songs, and once they finished, we had a DJ play Polish wedding songs. Everyone had so much fun dancing.

The best man, Matt, was in charge of the smoke cannons and made us all laugh during the photos. We haven’t had our honeymoon yet. We want to go with our daughters and have postponed it to 2023 to save up and make sure we go somewhere very special.

40

Seeing Dan’s face as I walked down the aisle was one of my favourite moments.

Sarah read out our favourite poem, Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andrea, and Teresa read out A Vow by Wendy Cope, which we felt perfectly described our relationship and being friends before being a couple. We were fortunate with the weather. We moved our wedding from May 2021 to March 2022, from an early-summer date to a date in the middle of spring. Thankfully, the sun shone, the air was warm, and everybody spilled outside into the beautiful gardens to enjoy the weather. The following weekend we had snow, so we were very lucky!

My dad got his wedding speech out of his pocket and started reading: ‘50 grams of butter, two eggs. Oh sorry, wrong list’. Our guests still comment on how good his speech was! Polish vodka was served during the speeches, and we still laugh at Dan’s auntie, June, who would have a large shot of vodka at the beginning and end of every speech. We were worried we were going to run out! Auntie June still claims she was only following what everyone else was doing.

OCEANS COULDN’T Marisa and Chris had a nauticalthemed wedding at Painshill Park followed by a reception at Oatlands Park Hotel Images courtesy of Amelia May Photos keep us apart 42

Marisa and Chris met while working on a cruise ship. “Even though we’re both British, we wound up meeting in Texas,” says Marisa. “We quickly became best friends, his sarcastic sense of humour matched mine, and he made me laugh. Our friendship was completely platonic for four years before we fell in love in the summer of 2019. It happened very naturally and was a dream come true because we got on so well and knew everything about each other. Our story was very much like a movie where the partner of my dreams turned out to be my best friend allThealong!”couple didn’t have a traditional proposal. “We decided to get married, because life is so precious, and after the pandemic, I think more and more people realised this and so we thought why waste time?” shares the bride. “Like a typical man, Chris didn’t mind when or where we got married. Painshill start hosting weddings in June, so we were the first one of the year! Weather in the UK is always unpredictable, so we prayed for sunshine, and we were lucky that our day was very hot!”

Finally, I painted a few nautical designs on mini-canvases that people could take, along with some painted shells and sealife figurines.”

“My wedding dress was an Enzoani gown called Melinda,” explains Marisa. “It was figure-hugging, and made me feel like a goddess. My wedding was in the summer, so I wanted a light, accessible dress to move around in, not a heavy ballgown with a hundred layers! The illusion bodice fit like a second skin, with gorgeous floral beading and embellishments draping down past the waist. The low

“I made the seating chart online and sent a copy to the venue so they knew where we would all be seated,” recalls Marisa. “I made nautical anchor place cards to tie in with our theme and placed lots of artificial flowers in silver cases on the reception tables.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I have always loved Painshill, it’s a stunning landscaped garden that’s perfect for a picnic,” explains Marisa. “It has a really special magic to it. Not only is it one of the most beautiful places in Surrey, but perhaps one of the most iconic in the whole of the MarisaUK.”and Chris chose organic heart-shaped coconut soaps as favours. “We wanted to give our guests something useful and fragrant while also helping a local business,” reveals the bride. “The two children were given a wedding activity book each, with crayons so they could doodle while we ate. We also put a pack of mints on every napkin, with our names and date on, as another little keepsake.

SETTING THE SCENE

The happy couple’s wedding cake was provided by Quintessential Cookies & Cakes. “Our cake was a bit different, to say the least,” remembers the bride. “It was ocean themed with a blue and white tie-dye effect, starfish, shells, pearls, mermaid tails, and two happy dolphins at the front bobbing up through the waves. For the cake toppers, we had Simba and Nala from The Lion King. I found them online and stuck a veil and top hat on them to make them wedding-worthy. It was so much fun getting creative. We had a lot of comments about how crazy and colourful the cake was. It looked more like a birthday cake at a kid’s party, but we loved“Theit!”night before the wedding, my mum and I decorated the reception room,” says Marisa. “We put white chair covers on, and my mum expertly tied the bestlooking aqua-coloured bows you’ve ever seen around each chair. Flower vines were placed on a mantlepiece, and I added little photo stands with pictures of Chris and I from around the world. I had found vintage Barbie and Ken dolls that kind of looked like us and dressed them in similar outfits to what we wore on the day – these were displayed on the cake table with a little alpaca and Peruvian print to represent my Peruvian heritage. Instead of a guest book, we had a poster that we got everyone to sign in blue and gold ink, which we framed afterwards. We wanted something we could look at all the time instead of a book that might get dusty on a shelf.” They booked Aaro Cars to transport them on the day. “They’re a local taxi firm,” shares the bride. “The driver was so kind and patient, especially since I called three times to make sure they’d be on time as I was so nervous.”

“We weren’t nervous at all,” remembers the bride. “There was no pressure for things to be perfect since there was only 16 people, so it was a chilled wedding! We have been best friends for so long, that we acted the same on our wedding day as we do every other day! Reading our own vows to each other during the ceremony was our favourite part of the day as it was so meaningful and romantic. We felt really euphoric, gazing into each other’s eyes. Although I was mildly distracted by my mother-in-law in my eyeline crying the whole way through!”

Although things went wrong on the day, it was still perfect.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“I decided once we got to the venue to go the toilet before the ceremony, and I couldn’t hitch the dress up,” says Marisa. “Poor Chris had to help me out of the whole dress in the disabled toilet. Not at all a glamorous experience to start the day with. This was followed by my dad making jokes while he walked me down the aisle instead of paying attention and looking at the photographer. The violinist’s stand almost blew over and would have smacked my brother in the head, but her quick reflexes caught it before serious brain damage was inflicted! My godfather, who was the celebrant conducting the ceremony, lost the rings for ages, and it ended up being in one of his pockets.

“We had violinist, Zara Lim, play our processional, recessional and first dance song,” recalls Marisa. “She messaged me in the weeks leading up the wedding, sending me audios and videos of her playing to make sure I was happy with her renditions of two songs from The Greatest Showman and From This Moment by Shania Twain. It was so special hearing the string notes echo across the stunning landscape with the sun beaming down. After that our guests had an hour to enjoy the 158-acre park, so they entertained themselves while we went off with our photographer for some stunning shots.”

Later, as we darted down the hill on a golf cart, my bouquet launched off and bounced away, luckily the videographer grabbed it because I didn’t even notice!”

illusion back was accented with delicate crystal buttons. It was the right amount of sexy sophistication plus the intricate beading made it really pop! I accessorised with a chapel-length veil, my hair down with loose curls and butterfly and white orchid clips.” Chris chose a powder blue linen suit from Hawes & Curtis. “He matched it with some cool brogue trainers,” reveals the bride. “He was going for a laid-back entrepreneur look.”

“My only sibling made a very meaningful speech that I didn’t expect and was very unlike him,” shares the bride. “He said that he remembered that I always protected him when we were kids when he got bullied at school. Even when I wasn’t with him, he felt my presence close by, so he felt safe. His speech wasn’t planned, which meant that brave spontaneity came from the heart, which I feel made our bond that much stronger.”

Chloee and Ollie tied the knot at Trinity Church followed by a reception at Coltsford Mill Images courtesy of Pebble Heaven Photography

Chloee and Ollie were set up by a mutual friend. “Our paths actually crossed over 20 years ago when Ollie was at primary school with my brother,” says Chloee. “One of our friends arranged a meal at a local curry house, and we were strategically sat opposite each other. We chose the same curry from the menu, and the conversation flowed all evening. Later, I was de-briefing my stepdad in a pub when Ollie walked in with his friend! We swapped numbers, and the rest is history.”

Ollie popped the question on New Year’s Day in 2021. “We live opposite a big hill, and every year we walk to the top,” shares the bride. “Once we got there, we stopped to look at the view, and I turned around to find Ollie down on one knee!” Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

LOVELY IN lavender

People advised us to take some time for ourselves on the day, so weadded a sweetheart top table. It meant we could look out onto theroom and enjoy watching our friends and family having fun.

50

We didn’t feel like a traditional white cake suited us, so we chose a large stack of brownies from Peckish Moments that were flavoured like our favourite chocolate bars, such as Mars, Wispa and Terry’s Chocolate Orange.

Our floral arrangements from Flowers By Liz included memory lane roses in a lilac colour to match our theme and delicate flowers such as white gypsophila, ferns and pampas grass. The venue provided the food, which was incredible! They cateredfor everyone, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

My step-dad transported us in a band van, which we decorated with white ribbons and stickers.

Coltsford Mill has a serene lake, and the grounds are beautiful. We loved the main barn, and we could easily picture our winter wedding being held there. We always wanted a February wedding, so we chose our anniversary date, which conveniently fell on a Saturday!

My bridesmaids chose lavender maxi dresses with ivory shawls. I wore a sheath wedding dress called Molly by Maggie Sottero fromElizabeth James Bridal. I styled it with an elbow-length veil, a thindiamante belt and ivory shoes from Lace & Favour. I also had a whiteleather jacket which was hand-painted by Carole at Mimosa BridalCouture, which was incredible. DJ2K was a fabulous DJ and they also provided our photo booth.

Ollie opted for a grey suit from Hawes & Curtis with a lavender tie and pocket square.

We were overwhelmed with joy and laughter. Our jaws were achingfrom smiling and we felt so loved. We were treated like royalty all dayby our loved ones and the staff at Coltsford Mill. We ran a speech sweepstake and a guess the first dance game. Each guest gave a monetary donation and we managed to raise around £400 for The Royal Marsden and St Raphael’s Hospice. A top tip for those who decide to plan their wedding day on the same day as your relationship anniversary, don’t forget your card and chocolates. Ollie mentioned our anniversary in his speech and gave me a present and it’s safe to say that I forgot!

SING FOR LOVE

EXPERT ADVICE 55

This is a great question and a tricky one to answer. Good quality in any industry, generally comes with a price tag that reflects the level of experience, skill and equipment used. This will vary further depending on what’s included in the service, as someone including physical products such as albums and prints will usually have a higher price than someone offering a digital service.

GoldsackChristopher

To achieve quality photography and remain within a reasonable budget, look for a photographer whose work and style you like. Once you’ve narrowed this down, contact the company to see if they offer a shorter elopement service or a minimum number of hours. These services became popular during the pandemic and have remained in favour with couples preferring a more intimate or scaled-down wedding.

www.denisewinterphotography.co.uk

If your big day is during the week or out wedding season, you may find photographers are more open to discussing a discount.

Denise www.denisewinterphotography.co.ukWinter

Alternatively, a harpist could play a medley as you both exit or it may be worth asking your celebrant to perform as a few of us are trained professional singers. I have been known to sing One hand, One Heart from West Side Story during a hand-fasting ceremony, and I’m planning to sing a bride down the aisle to I’m Kissing You with a string quartet accompaniment. Do any of your guests have musical talents? If so, it’s an ideal way for them to be a part of the day and create something memorable. You can decorate your venue with musicial-inspired décor or have the bridesmaids and groomsmen dress in a particular style such as 1940s glamour. There are so many options, so if you’re stuck for ideas, ask your celebrant for some suggestions.

We want to incorporate our love of musicals into our ceremony. Do you have any ideas of how we could do this?

I want to book a photographer and was wondering how I can keep the price down without compromising on quality?

A celebrant-led ceremony is the perfect way to incorporate your theme into your day. You could hire a singer to serenade the bride as she walks down the aisle or find a local barbershop quartet to sing during the signing of the certificate.

Start by deciding on your venue. If you go for an indoor space, try decorating it with a flower wall, arch and centrepieces that provide a woodland look and gown, elegantConsiderfeel.anweddingperiwinkle blue bridesmaids’ dresses with wildflower hair embellishments and whimsical ties and buttonholes or morning suits with top hats for the groom andPickgroomsmen.coloursthat will tie in with your theme, for example crimson red to represent the Queen of Hearts.

LIFE OF THE PARTY

I always ask my clients to do some research on Pinterest or Instagram of images they like so that I’m confident they’re receiving everything they want captured on the day. In my packages, I include a meet-up before the wedding to discuss any unanswered questions, see how your day is going to be structured and to get an idea of what you want to be captured on the day.

A gravity defying centrepiece made up of flowers and balanced playing cards in a top hat is another option.

Incorporate arches into the ceremony or behind the top table draped with seasonal greenery and amaranthus flowers. Make the most of any features in the venue. Decorate a staircase with a flower garland or swags of organza and ribbons.

Do you have any ideas on how we could incorporate our Alice in Wonderland theme into our day?

We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?

This is one of the most common questions I receive. I always recommend that my clients have a rough idea of the shots that they would like before the wedding, either as a list or a moodboard. Your photographer will want to ensure you enjoy your day as much as possible, so by creating a list of shots, you can relax knowing everything you’ve requested is being taken care of. Knowing what shots you want us to capture allows us to blend into the background, so we’re not interrupting the flow of the day by asking too many questions.

What flowers and colours would you suggest for an autumn wedding?

Annabel www.butterfliesandbows.co.ukGrange

As the summer fades into autumn, the variety of fresh flowers change, and the new, seasonal colours allow us to create fabulous floral displays. If you’d like an eco-friendly bouquet, dried grasses and leaves with pampas grass and some silk flowers are on trend at the moment. If a particfular flower is not in season, I would use silk and add it into the other fresh flowers – no one ever know they are not real. Tall martini vases are fab when decorated with a variety of seasonal flowers. Alternatively, look for shorter decorations made using various greenery and flowers in a more relaxed design. Black, iron candelabra with deep autumnal flowers and bronze or gold table runners, with a slight sparkle will create a rich, sumptuousPumpkinslook.inall shapes and sizes can be used to line the aisle or they can be scattered along the tables. Place garlands along the top table or down the centre of any long guest tables. Opt for just greenery or add pops of colour with candles or LED lights.

Amelia www.ameliamayphotos.comCox

FALL IN LOVE

If you’ve sent out your themed save-the-dates or wedding invitations, consider the finer details such as vintage teapots or jam jars filled with smaller, delicate flowers.

Lighting is critical, so think about LED lights placed around trees outside or bannister rails. Uplighters in an orange, purple or red tone creates a great atmosphere.

White tablecloths with either plain, printed, gingham or artificial grass table runners can help set the theme. Playing cards could be used as table numbers and place cards. For your favours, think of vintage-style teaspoons with fruitflavoured teabags in heart-shaped boxes or small bottles filled with a tipple of your choice and labelled with ‘drink me’. Your big-day bake could be a fashionable naked cake with a colour co-ordinating top hat topper filled with fresh blooms.

Scarlet Minx Millinery offers bespoke hats and headpieces and ready-to-wear options for the bride, mother of bride/groom and wedding guests.

“I trained in a hat shop in Guildford before lockdown and was trained by a top London milliner Katherine Elizabeth,” says Charlotte, the owner of Scarlet Minx Millinery. “Working from our home studio in the heart of Surrey, we offer a personal, one-to-one consultation to help our couples feel at ease. Whether you’re choosing a hat from our collection, or having a bespoke piece made, you’ll be able to try on different shapes and styles and play around with trims and embellishments until you find the one. I was a bridalwear dressmaker for more than 15 years, so have a great background in the industry, and we will be able to help you find that perfect piece which suits not only you but your personality and outfit as a whole too. All our pieces are handmade with love and care, using the finest materials such as lace, silks and hand-embellished appliqué and beadwork. We can use leftover fabrics from your dress alterations and incorporate them into your design, or you can pick fabrics from our bridal catalogues.

“I also offer millinery events that are great for hen parties. The event lasts about three hours long, and during that time, I help people make their own headpieces to take home.”

FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’

FACING FACTS

Melissa x

www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk 66

Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all!

As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess.Whenit comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

It’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect.

Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea!

Dave x

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my somewhat.expectationsIfoundthatIfeltquiteguiltyaboutnotinvitingeveryoneI’veeverspokento,butyoudefinitelydoneedtodrawthelinesomewhere.Myadvicetoanyoneplanninga

BRIDE’S DIARY 67

CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.

PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.

The average wedding in the UK in 2021 cost £17,300. This usually includes the venue, food and drink. Wedding dance lessons would normally be about one per cent of the budget but keep in the purse up to £500 if you want multiple lessons. Have a think about whether you want to have a first dance with your partner, one with parents or even a flash mob as part of your wedding celebrations.

What song works well for a first dance?

It’s time to take to the dancefloor for the first time as a married couple, but with so many routines and music options available, where do you start planning? We’ve put together a list of things you should take into consideration before booking a company to help you learn your first dance. When should I sign up for classes? This depends on whether you would like a one-off class with a few moves or a package of lessons with a choreographed routine. With either option, it’s best time to work four-12 weeks before the wedding. Too early and you may forget the routine or get bored of your first dance song!

Ready, set, plan!

Here at Your Surrey Wedding, we understand how overwhelming organising your nuptials can be. To help, we’ve spoken to local experts and asked for their tips on choosing the perfect suppliers and what you should be aware of before booking.

How to create the perfect wedding

HOW TO CHOOSE A DANCE TEACHER

Over the past 20 years we’ve worked with more than 2,000 couples, and have heard and taught almost every genre of first dance song. From romantic ballads to heavy rock and roll and everything in between. Even if you aren’t sure what song to pick, we can help you find something that is personal to you both, something you will be happy to listen to over and over again and a song that grabs you. How much budget should we set aside for lessons?

First dance lessons online or in person? During lockdown we really missed our couples. We offered various online options to help couples learn their first dance but we feel that in person works so much better. In studio and in person teaching means that the teaching is at the pace you need, with the language and phrases that work for you as well as getting immediate feedback. When you are looking for a teacher, ask how they will break down the dance for you both, whether they will take your ideas and options into account and how they will plan out the lessons for you. At First Dance Studios, we offer a free initial consultation to chat through everything from your song choice, dates, outfits and much more. CHOOSING A PHOTOGRAPHER

Make sure your photographer is open and transparent with you on how much their services cost and what it includes. All details should be sent in writing, and most importantly, make sure you get a good vibe from them. You have to feel comfortable around them as they will be capturing one of the most special days of your life.

FINDING THE PERFECT VENUE

When it comes to booking your wedding photographer, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the amount of choice available. I would start with recommendations. These are from people who have used the service before and will know first-hand how good they are. Check out the photographer’s website, as this will give you a great variety of photos to look over and an idea of their style.

If you’ve got a particular date that you want for your wedding, then we recommend you get in touch with your favourite venue as soon as possible. Most will typically have weddings booked anything from 18 months to six months in advance. Before you book your venue, ask heaps of questions and remember no question is a silly one. It’s your wedding day, and you want it to be as you imagined, so you need to make sure that your venue understands what you want and that they can deliver it before booking.

When it comes to hosting your special day at Brooklands Hotel, the possibilities are endless. Call our Wedding Team on 01932 335720 to make your dreams a reality. Bookwww.brooklandshotelsurrey.comyour2023weddingfor £2,023* or Enjoy £1,750 off* your honeymoon in 2023 *Terms & Conditions apply

CHILDRENS ENTERTAINMENT

Choose the package which is right for you. Hiring one nanny for the day for your children, for example, could fit better into your budget than hiring an entire creche, with multiple nannies, for a whole group of children.Cutcosts by offering to provide some toys and crafts for little ones or suggesting guests book their own babysitters through your wedding childcare supplier for the evening section of the wedding.

Wedding creche providers will have a host of packages on offer, be that in the form of a full creche set up for a group of children, or hiring one nanny for just one family throughout the day. They will be able to assist with all elements of the day, including mealtimes, nap times, playtime and the bedtime routine. Before booking, check what packages they offer and if it suits your requirements. Where will they base themselves at the venue? What will they be able to help with during the day? The earlier you contact your wedding childcare supplier, the better. Ideally, you would get in touch with your supplier six months to one year before your day to increase the chances of availability on your date. Look for important qualifications such as a DBS certificate and paediatric first aid training, and don’t be afraid to ask what experience your nanny has in childcare. If you would like to, you could also ask to be provided with references.

PLANNING SOS 73

If you have children of your own or are planning on inviting your guests’ children to your wedding, you may find yourself in need of a weddingday nanny service. This not only allows parents to relax during the day, but also ensures your little guests have an extra fun day with undivided attention and excellent care.

This spring-inspired shoot at Marden Park Mansion was put together by Kim from The Scene. She tells us more: “Our aim for this styled shoot was to remind couples they don’t always need to follow trends. Marden Park Mansion dates back to the 1800s, and it tied in with our classic yet modern style perfectly. The mansion is set on a 700-acre estate in a tranquil Surrey valley, with the most stunning entrance staircase. Step inside, and you’re immediately welcomed by its dark wood-panelled interior, high ceilings and open spaces.

“We had two beautiful gowns from Victoria’s Bridal Boutique. The Kylah dress had a V-neckline, beaded body and extended skirt, which Michelle complemented by adding a Botias Accessories hair clip and earrings. The second dress, called Claire, was chosen for its lace and strapless fit, and we added a bespoke pearl veil from Rebecca Anne Designs, which crowned the ponytail perfectly. Michelle styled our model’s hair in a loose, textured up do leaving it soft to frame her face. For the second look, she opted for a sleek ponytail. She kept her skin natural and enhanced her cheekbones using soft contouring and highlighter finished off with a nude lip.”

A timeless wedding

“As a stylist who is new to the wedding industry, I wanted to build a portfolio that represented my style, so I decided to team up with Megan Donati Photography and Michelle Morris Hair and Makeup to create this grand spring-inspired shoot. Our historic English venue inspired us to create a classic luxurious, yet minimalist wedding. We went for white roses, eucalyptus and a touch of blush to soften the otherwise monochrome design.

Start your search approximately 10 months before your wedding date, with the view of ordering seven to eight months before the big day. You also need to allow two to three months for alterations. Most boutiques will stock a selection of sample gowns that you can take home straight away if you’re pressed for time. Have a look through the website of your chosen boutique and pick out a few styles that excite you. This is a great way for the stylist to get to know a little about your taste. Be open to suggestions, and remember that your consultant knows the gowns inside out and is there to help you find your dream dress. Visit one to three boutiques, anymore and you will start to get very confused. Select the boutiques wisely and call in advance to discuss your ideas and budget.

THE LANDINGS RESORT

Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 94

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

Caribbean vibes

The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

FIVE STAR LUXURY

ST. LUCIAN CUISINE

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself!

MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES

While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some… 96

If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury.

While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT

The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

Travel goals

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

TOUR GUIDE Walkers www.walkerstours.comTours

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.
